Windsor Castle
Windsor Castle was originally built by William the Conqueror. Today it is the largest inhabited castle in the world. It has been open to the public since 1997, following the 5 year restoration programme that followed the fire in 1992. The restoration of St. George's Hall, in particular, is stunning. Visitors can wander around the State Appartments with their impressive collection of armoury and works of art. Queen Mary's dolls house is charming. St. George's Chapel is the burial place of ten sovereigns, including Henry VIII and the late King George VI. As an inhabited castle there are plenty of real-life soldiers marching around and standing in sentry boxes.
Windsor Castle is in the heart of Windsor town centre, directly opposite the main entrance to Windsor Royal
Station (Windsor & Eton Central.) Visitors arriving at Windsor & Eton Riverside (from Waterloo) should make their way up the hill (Thames Street.) Convenient car parks include the multi-storey (entrance on Charles Street) and Alma Road car park (walk through the Coach Park and up the steps to Windsor & Eton Central station.)
Features of Windsor Castle include:
- Castle grounds
- State Appartments
- Queen Mary's Dolls House
- St. George's Chapel
- Ice cream kiosk
- Souvenir shop
