The Eden Project
The Eden Project in St Austell, Cornwall, is an educational
charity which aims to explore all matters relating to
plants, their environment and their uses by humans. The
Eden Project is itself a regeneration project, being built on
the site of an old china clay pit. Since its opening it has
established itself as an international visitor attraction.
The Eden Project is home to the largest greenhouses in
the world. Natural plant habitats and cropped landscapes
are displayed in the Humid Tropics Biome, the Warm
Temperate Biome and the Outdoor Biome. The Project
aims to show how we use plants for food, fuel, medicines
and materials. The Eden Project incorporates art,
sculpture and automata to bring its exhibits to life and
explain the many uses of the plant world.
A new building called the Core, designed according to the
mathematical properties of the sunflower head, contains
exhibits looking at the global environment, the challenges
imposed on it and what is being done for the future.
Particularly for the children, there are play areas,
storytelling, workshops and trails with leafy hiding places,
stepping stones and sandpits. The Mechanical Theatre
uses puppets, robots and film to bring plant stories to life.
The Eden Project operates a park-and-ride buggy service
to transport you from your car to the site, if required.
Manual and powered wheelchairs are available. The Land
Train takes you down and back from the Biomes.
