Three mobile broadband is a complete joke, I am a pay as you go customer. Which was a huge mistake to begin with, but they wouldn't give me a contract because I live in an apartment building(WTF?!) It works fine and my connection speeds are fantastic but it eats through money faster than I can afford to top up. I knew from the get go that it wasn't the sort of internet package that you can swing from the rafters on but I didn't think it'd be this bad. I usually top up £15 which lasts about four days. I don't even go on it that often but even if I was to keep it running for twenty-four hours across four days I still technically shouldn't be maxing out. £15 is supposed to give me 100 hours, 24 x 4 = 96. Someone needs to give these clowns at three a lesson in maths. The ASA should be on their backs and breathing down their neck, or better yet shut down the company all together.

you know......I work for 3 in a 3store and we sell well over 150 of these modems each month.....the thing I find quite amusing though is how many of you are complaining about 3 and the modem and the speed etc.... 1) I very rarely get people in my shop complaining like you lot are which makes me think that you like complaining. The majority of people I have sold this to come back and thank me on how great it is! 2) 3 give you 28 days for fault, 14 days for coverage and 3 days if you simply just change your mind to return the unit. I'm pretty sure that's enough time for you to plug it in and check the connection, so if you're stuck with a bad connection or very low speed, whose fault is it!?

The worst mobile broadband in the world! DONT GET IT - ITS RUBBISH! The product was advertised as broadband @ 2.8MB per sec. The maximum speed I recieved was a useless and painfully slow 30kb per sec. Most of the time I didnt even get that. As for the poor customer "service", I spoke with 4 technical advisors, and 2 customer service advisors and they all did as little as they could to help. In fact I even had one of them hang up on me after I said I want to cancel the agreement. Quite possibly to worst internet product of the 21st Century added with the most insultive team of customer service advisors and technical support that I've ever encounted. Come on 3 - SORT IT OUT!!!!

I signed up for a £10 x 18 mth broadband lite contract 3 weeks ago when I bought a laptop from PC World, and like several of the contributors below I have had no internet access yet. Connection failure, error619,spent ages on phone to 3, some advisors knowledgable, some incomprehensible, some downright rude. The first modem I had turned out to be faulty so PC World exchanged it for a new one and 3 told me the reason for the lack of internet connection was that PC World had not input the phone no & IMEI no of the new modem into the system. Back to PC World who assured me they had, as proved by the till receipt, and put the details through again. When I was still getting 'Connection failure error 619' three then said it was due to problems with cellsites in the uk. Very frustrating as we are paying for a nonexistent service and without internet access I can't install the Norton security pack and various other extras.

I bought 3 PAYG a month ago and tbh for the first 3 weeks it was great, consistently connecting at 3.6Mbps. Then last week it just wouldn't connect, giving me a 691 error and when it did connect I was disconnected after 5minutes. I went away for the weekend and didn't take it assuming it was a "3" problem and all would be OK next week...HA HA. I am connecting 80% of the time now but in most cases I can surf for 5 to 10minutes then Internet Explorer says that the page cannot be displayed - despite me being connected! Other programs like SKYPE & MSN still run so I know it is running. The Customer Service guys are useless. One guy yesterday morning tried to convince me that my Firewall / Anti Virus program was causing the problem.... well how come it worked perfectly for 3weeks then huh???? Eventually last night one guy admitted that "3" has known problems so I have to bear with it. He also said bad weather is to blame. Dear oh bloody dear.

As i bought my USB modem on a saturday at 5pm, you would expect that day 1 would be over at 5pm on the Sunday but this is not the case. Moreover the signal is unreliable and keeps on breaking. Using it on the train is a waste of time. Despite asking several people about coverage and checking the website I find myself frustrated with a second rate internet speed which continuously disconnects. According to the locals the 3 network provides the best coverage which I was amazed due to my experiences. I thought it was only me who just about managed an upload speed of 18Kbps and a download speed of 31Kbps. This was in an area of good coverage, via the "turbo" network with a minimum of 3 bars of reception. I have just spent in excess of one hour on the telephone; I lost contact and redialled. Most of the time it was unplug, restart, re-insert, restart, try another USB port, etc, etc. Then a suggestion that the modem might be faulty; I suggested that the control panel/network information might be of use? but the operator on the other end of the line didn't know what this meant. And how many times do you have to repeat the name, address, telephone number, etc, etc. They treat you as an idiot. I don't think I am one. I think I would tend to agree that dial up is much faster than broadband, is more reliable. Again, if the system worked it could be great, but I think we are a while away from that. Plus this cancellation of contract - presumably you should be able to can cel if it doesn't do what you honestly believe it should be capable of - something approaching 250Kbps? Or is that asking too much?

Hi guys, unfortumately we get what we pay for here. Mobile broadband is not fool proof and still an experimental technology. I am dissapointed with the lack of speed but it does connect on (desktop only so far). You can do the very basics of surfing the internet and thats about it. I am hoping the speed improves as the network gets better but then you have to ask yourself "how long is a peice if string?". I wouldn't recommend this to anyone until mobile braodband can guarantee every customer a connection :-(

I don't understand the figures above, for the plus deal, I get 3Gb data allowance... However I would like to say that 3 ought to market the dongle device with goggles that allow us to see dead spots, and hot spots. Seriously, I beleive that most of people's disappointment is from dead spots caused by anything ranging from metal radiators to large water tanks. These sap up the data signal and leave us disappointed users cold and disappointed. I signed up at the carphone warehouse to an eighteen month contract. I paid 49.99 for the device. It was the plus deal: £15 a month for 3Gb. In Leatherhead where I was at the time it worked a treat. Better than dial-up and definately better than nothing at all. However streaming low quality video was it's limit. I also am able to get by the month with little to spare if anything. The overcharge cost is ridiculous though, so when my 3Gb runs out (I wish it were 5) I wait usually under a week until the next month. Now that I have moved to Esher, I really wish I had those goggles in my house. If you know how internet waves work then good spots can be figured out but try phoning 3 and they don't know squat. So I recommend using the dongle away from metallic objects, large bodies of water and avoiding interference from other devices.

If you think that 17kbs (on a good day) is a decent speed, go for 3mobile. Otherwise go with a reputable provider. For John (3 Manager) to tell us that it's a problem with PC set-up is, frankly, taking the wee-wee. The problem is poor signal strength / coverage and lack of traffic capacity. 3 need to invest more in their infrastructure before they will be able to delive what they advertise. OK, they've had my money - and other people's. BUT: we all have friends and family and I tell mine to avoid 3 like the plague. Long term - or even medium term - this is bad business sense for 3. If you sell a defective service, it comes back and kicks you up the backside and out of the market. That's basic business rules. let's see where 3 are in 3 years' time.

Chris you say "all round the country i've seldom dropped below 300Kbps"? Perhaps you should visit some of the many unhappy people on here and try it again? See that is where 3 mobile get you. You go into the shop and they tell you that you are in a good area and will get a good signal only to find that you are no different to every other unhappy customer. Also the man who sold it to me at phones4u lied saying that it would cost me £10 per Gig overusage. Looking at the overcharge now I see it would be £10 per 100mb overusage. That aside, I rearranged my entire living room, moved my computer right next to my bay window and shoved the modem as close to the window as possible and so far so good, much better reception and decent speeds. So i ask a member of staff for some information, It all seems straight forward and fair and still a good offer (The main point to consider is the staff member explained to me that internet browsing was free 24 hours a day just like home broadband, and that there was a lengthy cancellation period). It was late and i was impressed so i decided to sign up then but it being PC world none of the laptops on display that i wanted was in stock. The laptop was great (Compaq) and the internet was exceptional (much better than expected i thought it would be patchy) with good speeds reaching 130Kbs on one download not bad considering. All was good until Mon 48 hours after activation and i get a message from 3 stating i had used up all my internet allowances. The individual was friendly enough and helpfully informed me that not only web browsing but simply being connected to the internet is taken from your usage. I couldn't believe it three members of staff had lied about the service, this i explained but the 3 contact simply said they were wrong and offered no solution. Then i asked how the hell i had used 2.5gig even if i was connected and viewing web pages for 48 hours straight i wouldn't use up that amount, He simply replied i had used a large amount, i asked on what to which he said i should register with 3 and they will display all information on the website. I went back on the internet to register with three and had another message from them stating i now owed £10.35 (had no supplied information on how to register and nothing clear on the site). How is that even possible i had the modem in the box and the laptop closed down and only 2 hours had passed. I was fummin mad and contacted 3 again (but i have always been polite and reasonable during all communications) I explained all the above and was offered no explanation or solution. I stated i was happy with the internet service and would be happy to continue the contract if we could start from fresh with me being in full possession of the information on the service and an explanation on my internet usage (not unreasonable i thought), this option was completely ignored and i was told it couldn't be done (im sure they could if they cared). So i explained i was still in my cooling of period and i want to cancel. I was them informed that they couldn't cancel my contract i would have to contact PC world, I was suspicious as the contract was with 3 but 3 explained that PC world had miss sold me the agreement and the fault was with them. So after that phone call i go to the PC world were i bought the service and again explained the above (To three different members of staff before i got the line manager). I explained how it was miss advertised and the lack of supplied information. Well guess what surprise surprise they refused to take it back completely ignoring and discounting the lies that were told to sell the contract. I was told that the contract was with 3 and had nothing to do with them they were just the agents, i was only informed that there was only a three day cancellation period again after being told by PC world that i had a fortnight (Arrrrrrrrg !!) I was really beginning to lose my ragg and i asked if "3 says your responsible and you say they are what the hell am i supposed to do" and the manager simply repeated that i will have to contact 3. So i asked if he could contacted them for me to sort it out to which he replied that he couldn't (I could of punched him), if your acting as 3 agents why would you not be able to communicate with them , your acting as a middle man it is your job to communicate between customer and provider. This he simply choose to ignore and reiterate that he couldn't contact 3 (Lies, lies, lies (They didn't even offer to supply me with my contract what a dick)). So i have contacted 3 for a third time and guess what they are saying to go to the dealers that they cant cancel my contract or help in any way. all these people do is pass the problem off to another department. I will get back with the results but don't hold your breath and don't shop at PC world or trust what the staff says its just lies. Three has terrible service.

I've used my USB modem in many areas, on an XP laptop, with no problems whatsoever. The connection speed obviously varies, but it has never been too bad. Modem doesn't work, average speed <60kbps (HSDPA), customer service repeatedly say mast is down and will be back up within 48 hours. Based on this I can only deduce that the mast has been down for the last 7 months...and yes I'm allegedly in a turbo area. 3. I will probably just cancel the direct debit and see what happens, based on the number of complaints I can see here I'm not sure 3 would have a particularly strong counter-case in the eyes of OFCOM.

Anyway, once configured, I find that it is really quite fast and reliable (not in trains). Connects quickly, speeds are fine and it is really handy. I'm not one to normally write reviews, but I've been so incensed by the antics of Three that I've made an exception. Fortunately for me, I tried their AWFUL mobile broadband service on PAYG, before getting suckered into a useless contract. I got hold of a SIM, topped up and activated broadband. Great, or so I thought. The coverage is amazing, 3G is displayed just about anywhere, and in some unexpected places too. Unfortunately, that's where it ends. When you connect, you'll be lucky to achieve 1990's style modem speeds. If you're really lucky, you'll get bursts of data that are very impressive, and then nothing for minutes. It simply doesn't work. After you discover this, you'll be straight on the phone to them (Don't forget, this call will be chargeable, and you'll be on for a long time - if you have the patience). You'll be speaking to somebody with an attitude in Mumbai, India. They talk very fast in broken English, and the line quality will be poor, so be prepared. You'll be told that you're too far from the cell site, and that's why the speed is slow. When you tell them you have a five-bar signal, the excuse changes to too many people are using their phones. You'll be given various other excuses, but the bottem line in my experience is that their data network does not perform. They don't mind speaking to you for a long time and 'run some tests', but then they are getting a cut of the 0870 number revenue. You can then Google around for the e-mail of the Executive Office in Glasgow. You can then get your e-mail ignored for days on end, and finally get a reply asking you to ring an 0870 number! Best thing to do as I found was e-mail back your contact number, and ask them to ring you. This they did, eventually. Just when I though I was getting somewhere, I was grudgingly told that I could have my ten pounds back and be on my way. No explanation, no apology, and no real resolution, apart from the lady who gave the refund said the service must be OK, because she uses it all the time. If you love being abused as a customer, I can definitely recommend Three. When a customer is alienated like this, they never come back. I can definitely see what this guy means: have a look at www dot dayswasted dot com 1 star is a bit generous, DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!

I reported it well within the time required by the contract so I could cancel, and have since had to spend almost 20 hours talking to over 20 people in what has to be the most rude, aggressive and incompetent customer services department I have ever dealt with. I have explained the situation countless times, but it hasn't been understood properly once, and I have pointed out the clear terms of the contract, but they are still trying to get an extortionate cancellation fee. I have had to take legal action after months of obstruction. Interestingly 3 are one of the few companies not to subscribe to Ofcom's voluntary standards agreement...not surprising.

I decided on 3 because they offer the widest coverage. I work away from home for some months at a time, in various locations. I wanted to be able to use e-mail, MSN Messenger and general internet like Amazon and e-bay. In addition I do some work online via Terminal Server, e-mail and documents only. So I checked the 3 coverage map for my home address, my current temporary address, and my parents' address. All were covered (in blue - now) and purchased on a 12 month contract. I get a reliable connection at home and at my temporary address. I could get no connection and no signal at my parent's address (near Newmarket) although the map showed definite coverage. Speeds and data volume is the problem. I had no illusion - I did not expect to be able to download large files quickly or use streaming. But the usual connection speed - with 5 bars - shows between 0.0kb/s and 40kb/s. My old dial-up via telephone was faster and more reliable. Frustratingly, the speed sometimes zooms to 300kb/s for a few seconds but not very often. I think the problem is with network capacity and over-hopeful coverage predictions. Messenger takes ages to connect. The connection to my office takes ages to connect and stalls and it often becomes impossible to work. It really is a shame that 3's network capacity cannot produce what they have promised - the occasional bursts of speed show what it could possibly do, and what they need to do to get 5 stars from me. Meanwhile, it is inescapable that they are in breach of contract.

My account was then charged with an amount of GBP10 without my consent. To add insult to injury when I went to go on the internet I was expecting it to credit my account with a 1 gig allowance lasting 30 days. This did not happen and I was charged at the ridiculous rate of GBP1 per Mb effectively wiping out the GBP10 after no longer than 20 minutes. Calls to the call centers in India proved fruitless as did speaking to people in authority at the same. I decided to have 1 last ditch attempt and go down to the 3 store which is local to where I live where I had the same line quoted back to me that there is "no system that allows us to perform any sort of refund". It was then I left the modem on the cash desk and walked out. Rest assured that I will NEVER use 3 or any hutchinson telecom product or service ever again and will be using social network websites and any other means possible to spread the word of their very shoddy customer service treatment and complete and utter disregard to sort out customer problems. I can only thank my lucky stars that I am not locked into a lengthy 24 month contract with them. Sadly the lowest rating I can give them is 1 star but quite frankly I wouldnt even give them that. Coverage varies greatly, but in a fixed position with good 5 bars Turbo mode I get rates varying from 300K to 800K on average. I once had 1.2M but have not achieved it since then. I tried using it as a fixed broadband replacement for remote access but the connection drops about every three days on average, requiring a manual restart. The UBS dongle GUI is rubbish, It won't reconnect automatically if the connection drops out. The useage stats log only updates if you disconnect and then reconnect. However my main gripe is with the 'my three' website and Indian call centre. Why do you have to buy credit and then convert it to a top up ? It is practically impossible to register a credit card on the website. If you try and add your details and it responds with 'this service is not available' or other similar messages. After persevering for several days and getting nowhere, in the end I rang the call centre, they just didn't understand the problem, asked for non existant passwords and kept on putting me on hold. A lifetime later I managed to get the card added manually, Thank goodness I won't have to do that again in a hurry. I think mobile broadband and 3 customer service still have someway to go. The service is like one big beta test rather than a stable commerical procuct. I'd wait a while longer if you can.

I usually reach speeds in excess of 2MB and outside peak times, I'm achieving 3 - 4.5MB ! (These speeds are verified by the Broadband Choices website speed checker.) I thought I would only be able to reach 2.8MB but looks like Manchester is possibly undergoing an upgrade to 7.2MB as I read on one of the broadband websites somewhere. A very impressive service at a reasonable price with excellent data limits for the price. The only problems I've had is connecting in a couple of hilly areas of Brighton which I'm assuming are hidden from the 3G signal. One tip I would give to people thinking about mobile broadband but who are worried about 3G network coverage is to check your coverage before purchasing. At the moment (July 2008) the North of England is fully HSDPA enabled but it looks as though Southern England still has some way to go judging by 3's coverage map. When you use your dongle then make sure you keep the cable (connecting your dongle to the USB port) as short as possible as I've found that the longer the cable, the poorer the signal and slower the speed. This shouldn't be an issue if you have the new data cards which plug straight into your USB socket.

I have now had 3 mobile broadband for around a year. I live in South London. When I first bought it the internet worked at reasonable speed, but has only ever been fast dial-up. Over the year the speed of the service has declined markedly. It is now often difficult to get internet access. The “fast” link HSPDA continually kicks back to the slow connection, which does not work. In the evenings especially the service is unusable. I would not recommend the service, though it is cheaper than some competitors, the service is generally like a low-dial up connection. I do not think it is accurate to describe it as broadband. Looking on this review board, the responses seem very variable. I think this reflects the fact that the speed of the service differs markedly depending where you are. My observation is that South-West London is particularly slow; I have tried the internet on my laptop on a number of occasions. If you want to try 3 mobile, do not go for the 18 month contract. I would recommend instead buying the prepay option and seeing if it works in your area. While the mobile dongle costs £60+, better to do that than spend a couple of hundred pounds on a service that doesn’t work in your area.
