Sony Ericsson W850i
Product Rating
Sony Ericsson W850i ReviewRating: Date: 24/11/2006 The Sony Ericsson W850i is a 3G Walkman phone with a sliding design available in a black or white finish. Both colours contain slight orange details to highlight certain buttons and the white phone has the Walkman logo made of 24k gold. For ease of use, this phone has dedicated access keys for music and web access. It has a lighting feature that illuminates the phone around the play button with a pulsing effect to the rhythm of your music. The weight of the phone slightly lets the stylish design down as it is 116g. The phone has a very good camera with video capabilities. It has 2 megapixels and a 4x digital zoom as well as a flash light for taking pictures in poor lighting. The second camera that sits above the phone screen is used for video calling. Images are easy to see in the large 2 inch colour screen. It is very clear with 262k colours and a resolution of 540 x 320 and is the best available in the market at the moment. Being a Walkman phone, the music player is excellent. It plays MP3 and AAC format and also has an FM Radio. It has a stereo sound through the headphones and the option to choose Mega Bass™ for a fuller sound. With the TrackID™ feature on this phone you can find out the title, album and artist name by sending a sample of the song to the music database. The music management software (Disc2Phone) also enables you to transfer music files from a PC to your phone along with the information about the artist, album and the track. The W850i also has a direct link to the PlayNow™ so music can be downloaded straight to your phone. The phone has an internal memory of 16MB and the option to expand it to 1GB with an external memory card so you can store approximately up to 1000 songs. This phone has a 64-voice polyphonic sound enabling 64 notes to be played simultaneously. As well as polyphonic ringtones, the phone can also play MP3's as ringtones. The melody composer lets you create your own monophonic ringtones and you can compose your own polyphonic ringtones using the MusicDJ™ feature. The W850i has great connectivity with Bluetooth, USB mass storage, infrared and FastPort. Bluetooth allows you to connect wirelessly to another device with the same capabilities up to 10 metres apart. The USB mass storage is a great and easy way to connect to your PC as it has a simple and easy interface that allows you to drag and drop files so works great with the MP3 player. The expandable and/or phone memory appears on the PC screen as a mass storage device. The phone can connect to the internet via a 3G connection which enables 384 kbps data transfer. This is the fastest connection available as using a 3G connection is similar to a broadband connection. The W850i works on a quad-band frequency which means that it will work in Europe, America and Japan. Overall, this is a very good top of the range phone. It has an excellent MP3 player along with great memory to support it and great connection with significantly fast data speeds with 3G. The things that let the phone down are the size and weight, and also the keypad as this has had some complaints from some users.

Reviewed by DONT USE IN THE RAIN on 27/01/2007 well what can i say?? i'm an abuser of phones. 3 months max i've kept a phone. i really loved this phone, after nokia, sagem, motorola, samsung i thought i'd give sony another go- but on a phone that hasn't got that easy to snap off joystick. so the w850i it was to be. boy what a phone, i love my music and this really does the job. put a 4gb memory stick in, bluetooth headphones. the playing time is amazing, the battery(treat this right) lasts for DAYS no ### WEEKS###. its amazing. JUST BE AWARE do not use this phone in the bathroom or even in the rain, it is SO prone to water damage. i've had 2 in 8 weeks, love the phone- but just not durable enough. Rating:

Reviewed by Chris Mason on 26/01/2007 Hi, This phone seems good at first but a combination of the fiddly menu system and the slider bar that has a Walkman button just underneath soon hack you off big time. When you open the phone the bloody thing keeps going into Walkman mode by mistake. Also I could not get it to hang up calls when shutting the slider Aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!! This Phone went straight back to orange. Do not buy if this if you are used to Samsung sliders or like a simple control interface. Rating:
Reviewed by Andrea on 26/01/2007 Been using this phone for 3 months... excellent!! the only thing it lacks is that you cant end a call by sliding it shut!! also if you take a pic in poor light and use the built in light, its not really bright enough to get a good shot, (unlike my previous sonys). Syncs easily with my pc and music transfer is easy peasy, huge memory card and love the walkman, holds loads of tracks, texting is easy, the slide part is nicely balanced and has a nice positive strong click, doesnt feel flimsy or cheap at all, great looking phone, If your thinking of upgrading from a previous sony.... DO IT TODAY. I have recomended this to lots of happy people. 10/10 Rating:

Reviewed by Ginga Si on 19/01/2007 What can i say, i am thoroughly disappointed. Probably one of the worst phones i have had in recent years. It is very poor on battery life especialy if using as a walkman(which kind of undermines the only worthwhile feature of the phone.) It has very illogical sub menus after you get past the desk top icons. The calendar is a pain to use and the reminders are easily missed, trying to sync with outlook is near to impossible. Writing text can be a real mission, it is a very slow and clumsy process. Rating:

Reviewed by Carlsberg - ENG on 18/01/2007 After reading these reviews, I got this phone and at best am satisfied with it. I'm not originally from the Nokia/ Samsung or Sony camp so I'm not going to shoot neither manufacturer down! The MP3 player is just brilliant. Superb sound, particularly with mega bass. The camera was good too - better than I thought it would be for a 2mp. Battery life, reception and the screen are all top drawer. My problem with this phone is the build quality. The rear cover 'creaks' when texting which ruins it for me. When taking pictures, you can feel a small amount of play between the two sections. The naviagtion keys can also be uncomfortable after prolonged use but that is a minor criticism. Its better than the duff joysticks. If it was screwed together just a little bit better it'd be perfect. Rating:

Reviewed by Wrightnice on 16/01/2007 What a quality phone!!! Have always had Nokias in the past and was loathesome to change as I was used to the menus and sms but after having had the terrible Nokia 6680 I decided it was time to change and how glad I am that I did. Texting is easy to get used to if you are coming from a Nokia background. The memory is plenty for a few albums and all the usual multimedia phone options are there e.g assigning individual photos and ringtones to numbers etc. Its also extremely easy to install software, games etc and to link to your computer to transfer music files. You can also opt to turn the phone on into 'flight mode' so that you can use the mp3 player on a flight without causing it to crash. These sony kids have thought of everything!!! Rating:

Reviewed by Ben UK on 13/01/2007 Well having owned both the SE W550i and W810I before , I find this phone is sort of a hybrid between the the 2 phones . From the W550I it sports great music features such as stereo widening and a very loud speaker that really pumps out the bass and the from the W810 , it has expandable memory and a 2 megapixel camera. The added bonus is that its a 3g phone so you'd be able to make vid calls aswell . The only downside is that its camera quality is very mediocre compared to my 801i's (no auto focus or the ability to zoom in in 2mp mode) . Guess I'll have to wait for the w880 for that function maybe Rating:
Reviewed by pbo_y on 12/01/2007 OMG. This phone is amazing. It may not have auto focus, but how could that be a problem when you got 24k gold on it as well. And I think the dancing lights to the beat of the music is also really cool. The weight is a tad bit of a problem but not that much of a problem. Its about the same volume as the really cool 810i. I have no problems with it and it slides like its covered with grease. Awsome phone, my personal favorite. Well done sony ericsson Rating:

Reviewed by Adam W on 07/01/2007 Had this phone for about 2 weeks now and, to be fair it is a great phone. Lots of features and a high quality music player that will store loads of tracks. The camera isn't as high spec as other Sony Ericsson models but is still fairly sharp. If you are after a good camera phone i would'nt suggest this model as it is a music player more than a camera. I had a nokia 6680 before which was a very sturdy, durable phone and I'm finding the w800i a bit flimsy and clunky in comparison and wonder if it will last the 18 months of my contract. Overall though a very nice looking phone packed with features. Rating:

Reviewed by Lynn on 05/01/2007 I have always been a Samsung girl and loved my pretty pink E530, so when O2 offered me an upgrade (which I didn't really need) I thought I'd pick a phone my son would like and let him have it for his birthday. I picked the SE W850i. Now, as his birthday isn't for a couple of months I thought I'd better charge the battery and just make sure everything worked ok. That was last night. By this afternoon I knew there was no way I was ever giving up this phone! I absolutely love it. Ok, so its not pink but I love the way it lights up and the different themes you can use to customise it. Not being a lover of sliding phones (thats why I didn't go for the Samsung D600 or D900) I was very impressed with the smooth action of this one. Everything about this phone is amazing, the features, the sound quality, and even how it feels in your hand. I've never written a review about a mobile before but just had to about this one. I've read the other reviews here and a couple of people have said that it doesn't store all missed calls etc. so I've just tested this out by ringing mine from my landline and a couple of different mobiles. All the information of the missed calls is on there. I can't speak for other people but mine had no problems at all.
The only thing I'm a little apprehensive about is the fact that its the first slider phone that SE have done, I'm hoping that there are no glitches with this that only show up after a period of time. Other than that its totally perfect. Oh and one last thing, I'm not usually a games lover (esp on mobiles) but 2 out of the 3 games that come with this phone are excellent too. Can't recommend this phone highly enough. Go get one! Rating:
Reviewed by Whisky Master from Scotland on 05/01/2007 Had this phone for two weeks. It is the best handset in the world. Video calling and live TV is awesome, it is packed with so many features your tounge will hang out !! Deffinatley worth gettin :P Rating:
Reviewed by oli on 04/01/2007 Good phone! There was a compalint from mitko (below) but i think that sounds like an O2 problem as I'm on orange and haven't had a single problem in 2 weeks. Excellent sound quality both on the walkman feature and in call. Nice big screen and good picture quality on the 2 m/px camera. My one complaint is that the phone is too easy to unlock in pocket (ie; just slide it open) and doesn't always lock when you slide it closed. Other than that - its great - better than a nokia any day!!! Rating:

Reviewed by Emily on 27/12/2006 I have had this phone for about two days and i love it already! i think it looks great and although the small navagational keys look difficult to use they really arent its also smaller than expected and it looks so good in white. People have mentioned about the camera. I'm not an expert but i think its rather good quality and theres alsorts of effects etc. Also the slide design. Again, i am not an expert but i think it slides really well and it is good that it doesnt shut down calls or applications when you shut it because that way you cant (not that you would) lose what you were doing or hang up on somebody accidentally. definatly not a fault. The memory on this phone is MEGA and the quality of the walkman is absolutely great. you can also listen to music whilst doing other things (ie writing a message) which i think is really useful. Battery life is really very good. one slight problem was connecting the phone to the computer. after i installed all the software, the compute r just didnt recognise it was connected to the phone. After restarting the computer, however, it worked straight away so that might have been my fault. Overall i love this phone so much it has great qualities and lots to do and if you go ahead and buy it you will not be disappointed.
By the way if you've actually read all this (ive just realised how long it is) i thank you and hope you take it into consideration xx Rating:

Reviewed by Tom on 23/12/2006 When you buy a Sony Ericcson phone you don't expect it to be faultless. This isn't. The screen flickers, the menus become jumbled, the battery life is absolutely abysmal and it doesn't end the call when you slide it closed. That aside, the music player is very easy to use, as is putting songs on the phone in the first place. It's well made and doesn't feel or look cheap unlike some recent Nokias. I love this phone. It's not perfect and I should imagine I'll have to send it back if the screen becomes any more unpredictable but I'll be swapping it for another W850. I only have a 1GB memory card in mine which hinders it slightly and the larger capacity cards are stupidly expensive (£110 for the 4GB). All round it's a great phone. Does exactly what it's supposed to, it just takes its time about it occassionally. The camera is pretty poor too but I have a camera so I don't care! Get one, you'll love it. Rating:

Reviewed by Farno on 02/12/2006 I originally wanted the 950i but after a few minutes playing with it in a shop i found it a bit too plasticy for me, so i had a go with the 850i and found it nicely weighted, a great size and had a good high quality feel to it.
The screen is crystal clear and a good size, picturesand video can be shown in landscape mode, this means they show length ways across the display for a fuller picture. I have big man-hands and have no trouble with the top slider buttons or the text buttons on the bottom slider. This has always caused me problems on Nokia phones in the past. The only trouble i have with the buttons is when sliding open the phone, i can press the orange walkman button, the sliver bar above it should be raised higher. Camera quality is cool, there is a dedicated camera button on the side of the phone. The light comes in handy. SMS and MMS are easy to use and the predictave text is quality, you can quickly switch between SMS and MMS if you feel you want to add a video or a picture to your message.
The suppied earbud headphones are very poor, and you have to have them plugged in to get the radio to work as the phone uses the cord as its antenna. The menu system is easy to use, after a 30 min play i had it figured out. The Homepage feature will suit someone that gets alot of calls-text or emails on there phone. Just press the button to see all the latest messages, press the button again to return to the menu screen.
The Walkman menu system could have been made sleeker, and iMac owners beware, the supplied software is not supported, neither is any to be found on the website, you can just plug the phone into your mac and your mac will detect the phone. Items can then be drag/dropped into the new desktop icon. The instruction booklet lets the whole package down. I foundd it easier just to mess around with the phone. It took made a while to figure out how to increase the ringer volume, setting it on 'outdoor' profile is the highest volume setting but then you can use the volume buttons on the side to increase the volume further. The phone looks cool, and pressing the Walkman button makes it look even better as the screen turns black and the buttons glow orange. The included themes work very well and let you to personalise the phone straight out of the box, more can be downloaded at a price. Rating:

Got white one on contract with Vodafone one month rental cashback and twelve month deal with phone4U. The menu on SE compared to nokia appears more simple only one page and no sub-menus which seems a little basic. The slide out key pad a little too small but sure will get used to it. Am enjoyong trying to customise it for me would recommend to y'all if looking for a fly fone to impress this is for you. PS can anyone tell me why cant use transferred tunes from PC as ringtones x x Rating:

Reviewed by Harry on 01/12/2006 I have had this phone for over a week now and i am really disapointed. i got it free on (tmobile) from the carphonewarehosue and with all the great revieews i dicided to get it over the samsung d900. The screen has already been scratched and the colours in the screen are not that good. I believe that the camera is not up to standard. I like the set out but i dont feel that the slide is smooth. Sony erision i expected more from you. Rating:
