The Sony Ericsson W850i is a 3G Walkman phone with a sliding design available in a black or white finish. Both colours contain slight orange details to highlight certain buttons and the white phone has the Walkman logo made of 24k gold. For ease of use, this phone has dedicated access keys for music and web access. It has a lighting feature that illuminates the phone around the play button with a pulsing effect to the rhythm of your music. The weight of the phone slightly lets the stylish design down as it is 116g.
The phone has a very good camera with video capabilities. It has 2 megapixels and a 4x digital zoom as well as a flash light for taking pictures in poor lighting. The second camera that sits above the phone screen is used for video calling. Images are easy to see in the large 2 inch colour screen. It is very clear with 262k colours and a resolution of 540 x 320 and is the best available in the market at the moment.
Being a Walkman phone, the music player is excellent. It plays MP3 and AAC format and also has an FM Radio. It has a stereo sound through the headphones and the option to choose Mega Bass™ for a fuller sound. With the TrackID™ feature on this phone you can find out the title, album and artist name by sending a sample of the song to the music database. The music management software (Disc2Phone) also enables you to transfer music files from a PC to your phone along with the information about the artist, album and the track. The W850i also has a direct link to the PlayNow™ so music can be downloaded straight to your phone.
The phone has an internal memory of 16MB and the option to expand it to 1GB with an external memory card so you can store approximately up to 1000 songs.
This phone has a 64-voice polyphonic sound enabling 64 notes to be played simultaneously. As well as polyphonic ringtones, the phone can also play MP3's as ringtones. The melody composer lets you create your own monophonic ringtones and you can compose your own polyphonic ringtones using the MusicDJ™ feature.
The W850i has great connectivity with Bluetooth, USB mass storage, infrared and FastPort. Bluetooth allows you to connect wirelessly to another device with the same capabilities up to 10 metres apart. The USB mass storage is a great and easy way to connect to your PC as it has a simple and easy interface that allows you to drag and drop files so works great with the MP3 player. The expandable and/or phone memory appears on the PC screen as a mass storage device.
The phone can connect to the internet via a 3G connection which enables 384 kbps data transfer. This is the fastest connection available as using a 3G connection is similar to a broadband connection.
The W850i works on a quad-band frequency which means that it will work in Europe, America and Japan.
Overall, this is a very good top of the range phone. It has an excellent MP3 player along with great memory to support it and great connection with significantly fast data speeds with 3G. The things that let the phone down are the size and weight, and also the keypad as this has had some complaints from some users.

Great phone best phone I have ever had the camera is not the best but it has great effects like sepia etc. It can hold incredible amounts of songs and it also has a good look about it. The only bad think is that it is quite fat but you soon get used to it as all it's great features charm you! The only thing I regret is losing it and no one returning it :(.

I have had this phone for 18mths and in this time the loud speaker has gone off 3 times, the microphone once, the keyboard once. Just to give you a bit of history my phone is used very little and still looks brand new out of the box, never been dropped or used to play music from the loud speaker, and still it seems to breakdown. I was told to keep away from Sony Ericsson and i never listened, i dont think i will ever buy anouther or recommend one to anyone. KEEP WELL AWAY FROM A W850I

Looking forward to finally getting rid of this phone... It's bulky (has weakened my jacket pocket it's so heavy, and looks like a brick too); it's difficult to text (buttons are small and impractical); the slider is annoying (it doesn't always automatically lock the phone when you slide up - so you can end up calling people from your pocket); and it's complicated trying to sync with PC, so in nearly 2 years I still haven't done it. And did I mention the battery life isn't that great (and never has been)? The bars go up and down, they have a mind of their own. Only kept this so long because I have another phone, which I use more...

This phone is very beautiful unfortunately the telephone and the earphone are not loud ennough. Just can't understand anything in a noisy ambience. But no problem for anybodyy borne after 1990.

I just got this as a replacement for my Nokia 5200 and I love this phone!! Features are great, battery life is excellent and the music quality is fantastic even on full volume!!! Doesn't matter about the camera only being 2 megepixels, does the job for me! Love the photo DJ and video DJ and music DJ and the Track ID is pretty cool too!!!! Overall, I would reccomend this to anyone who wants a cool phone. Love it, well done Sony Ericcson.

i personally fink this fone is awful! it is a nightmare to charge up, i neva ger a signal bur tha mite b down to avin it on tmobile as a network, has a button to access the internet so if u forget to put this fone on lock n leave it in ur pocket it wil drain ur credit i once lost 4 pound ov credit by doin this, i bought this from a catalogue and it looked better quality than wa it actually is as it feel cheap and looks cheap, the camera is blury, bluetooth 4 sum reason stopped workin afta 6 months and tbh the fone is jus not the best.There was only a few gurd things to say bout this fone it has a gurd memory to store lots ov songs and played songs at a gurd quality and its simple to use.Apart from those things the fone was terrible.I am replacin it wit a lg viewty which looks much betta.I wud not reccomend this fone at all.

I need helpi am trying to transfer a few songs but i put the usb lead in and it restarts the phone and message comes up usb not recoginised its getting on my nerves i want two songs!! anyone experienced this before. PLEASE HELP!!

I have this phone and it has broken twice, the first time i managed to get it repaired, the second, they said there was nothing more they could do. Fantastic when it was working, if a bit chunky, but what's the point in having an awesome phone which is broken? I wouldn't say definitely don't get it, but what I would say is you're taking a gamble.

This is a good phone, with the camera and the music player.. but after a couple of months, it would crash whenever i shut the phone. i had it fixed but it still turns off randomly. Would not advise this phone

Not bad really. There are two MAIN GROUSES which are firstly the cracked directional pad and secondly the phone hangs repeatedly when accessing my contacts from "Z" upwards. Weird

A fantastic phone. I have an eyesight problem and needed a phone with a large clear screen. easy to use controls, and diddn't feel as though I was carrying a brick around in my pocket. This phone fits the bill perfectly. It has everything and more that I need but most importantly for me is the sound quality, and this is excellent on both music and speach. The screen clarity is also excellent this added to the easy to use menu system adds to the phone's ease of use. The camera isn't the best, but still better than average. That said, this phone majors on its sound quality not it's camera. If you want one to take good pictures you'll need the upper end of the K series that use Sony's Cybershot camera technology. You do have to be wary of the large screen though as this does make it vulnerable if it's put in your pocket without a case, My first W850i got broke so I replaced it imediately with another one it is that good. Build quality is excellent. I have heard that some people have had problems using the buttons, but in my opinion you can't get much worse than a partially sighted bloke with fingers like a bunch of bannana's, and I'm having no probs with it at all. I am so pleased that for this phone Sony Ericsson got rid of that pain in the butt joystick they seemed to like inflicting every purchaser with. The new direction pad is much easier to use adds to the allready good looks of the phone. To sum up the W850i is by far the best phhone I've ever had or tried and beleive me I've had the use of a lot of phones over the last fifteen years.

Without a doubt the best phone i ever had. Its now two years that i have the phone, and it met and exceeded my expectations! The only thing that i think SE phones lack is a log of calls with its duration similar to Samsung. Otherwise no complaints. Well done SE!!!!!!!!!!

the front keypad is very clumsy and you can hardly do anything without the walkman interfering. And my keypad broke after a month cos i love playing games. I've been using it for over a year now and i doubt if i still can part with it cos it falls like a ball and its still working perfectly.

i've had this phone for a bit over a year now, it started off great, but after a few months, whenever I receive a call, I'd press accept once; nothing would happen, so I press accept again..and it closes the call. I now always have to call back, and the battery life isn't great, it lasts about 2 days not even using the phone that much.

I love this phone, great features, great pictures and music quality. The only problem that me and my boyfriend have had with this phone is the key pad on the front of the phone next to the walkman controls breaks easily. Mine broke within 5 months of having that phone

had this phone for nearly a year now.. treated me well until the official charger blue my battery up inside it. it now turns off if you slide the phone fast, of sometimes just randomly, also turns itself off when full charged? i hate the fact when it's on file transfer mode, and you unplug it, it restarts? walkman button is in a very stupid place, it's to close to the up button. the camera is okay, but needs good lighting for it not to come out fuzzy and bland. i like the apps and games avaliable for download on this phone, battery life is poor though. also another negative, there's only one socket, which is for either charging, or headphones etc maybe they should just introduce seperate sockets? screen size is okay, but isnt bright enough, even when brightness is on 100% also the phones fairly brick-ish, but doesnt do any harm, i'm used to brick phones, hence the nokia 6600 xD im never getting a s.e again.. i'm getting a 14 day trial on iphone 3g, i wonder how that'll be.

Iv had this phone for a year now and i have finally given up the speaker is awful especially when making a call, i found i couldn't hear the person on the other end of the phone and if i did it was faint although they could hear me, i thought it may have just been the speaker i took it bk to the shop where they said it was the volume although if i turned the volume up on the phone it would just crackle. after 5months of having the phone the screen started to go white and after a week totally went blank and wouldn't turn on the shop where after a month of looking at it they then replaced it with a brand new phone with a new w850i which still had the same speaker problem a few months later it did the same thing again i have now given up with the w850i and have brought a new phone all together. this is a rubbish phone and i wouldn't recommend anyone to buy it!!!!!!!!

this phone is awsum i have had it for about 9 months and it was brilliant until it brok in a water fight but the screen still works but duzent light up so dont go in water fights with it!!! good aplications and the games are good same for the skins. The music player is good and belive it or not the camrea is good to but i dunno about that compared to the lg kc550 orsay what i am getting in about 4 weeks time but good phone over all i totaly recomed it!!!

Had this phone on an 18months contract and it was simply fantastic. I'm not a gadget freak. Love a phone that works and takes gopopd pictures and this phone does it real good. Certainly not bulky or ugly, it's a matter of personal preference

Ive had this fone for just over a year now. Ive really enjoyed having this fone, the music player is great!!! That is the highlight of the fone for me. When i first got it i really wasnt sure about the look, but you really do get used to it. The camera is ok, have seem better ones other makes such as samsung and nokia, but can deal with it. The video is the main thing that bothers me, its a big let down. I find texting very easy to do and the fone is lovely in the hand to use. Its quiet bulky, not really a pocket fone. But if your someone who wants a music fone, nice to use and general fone, then this is the one for you!!!

I absolutely love this phone, i had it for about a year and then it broke and i bought it again cos i loved it so much, then sadly dropped it down the toilet!! Soo.. im not getting much luck! I'm usually up to date with phones and now i dont wanna get it cos its so old but i love it!!!!!! Its gonna be really hard trying to get any better, its set my standards high! Really loud, battery lasts HOURS, But if u love music without a memory card your pretty much screwed. You need one, the phone usually comes with one tho :) 15/10.. x

I had this phone for about 8 or 9 months before it got a tiny bit wet from some rainwater when it was in my pocket and stopped working! however before it broke I was really pleased with it. It was a great phone with great music features and I really liked the videodj app. the only bad points were that for some reason it didn't have track Id on any of the menus so i couldn't use it even though it said that the phone had it and after a few weeks it stopped keeping records of my calls but overall it was a really good phone. Im skint at the moment so im gonna buy a k550i to replace it.

Second phone on an 18 month contract both with the same problems contrast of the screen goes from light to dark and then back again. Sends blank texts, rings people and goes onto internet without me knowing whilst being in my pocket.

theres a good and bad side to this phone,, the goods are it has a great sound and camera and it is also easy 2 use,, the bad is after a while the phone has a tendancy to freeze or switch its shelf off,, ive had 2 of these now and its done it with both of them,, but dont let that stop you from buying one because they are really good phones.

Although I did have to get a replacement half way through the contract because it was faulty and orange deleted the track ID feature. The video camera was a bit poor

Very good phone, the walkman function is excellent and the speaker is one of the best I have heard. Camera is ok but nothing special and the rest of the functions are more than adequate. It is very tough and the screen is very scratch resistant. Not the best looking phone though.

this is OBVIOUSLY the best SE fone thatz out! there are no design flaws and it has everything you could ever imagine a phone can have...and more! i mean, come on! everything is perfect...and then they give it all these awesome feautures like trackid (which is A LOT more useful than you would think) and so many more things that i cannot name. i 1st saw the marvelous W850i, i fell in love with it and i forced my dad to get it for me! lolz! i got it finally and i've not put it down since...and i don't plan to either! heehee! oh yeah...and W880i STINKS!! how dare it try to compete?!!

its a good phone but its only weakness that im not satisfied about is its camera.. it didnt have the auto-focus featured like other sony e phones.. and because it is a slide-design mobile so the problems is always like other slide-design mobile that its easy to get broken and the screen will display a white colour because of some external pressure or internal problem such as software and etc.. but i like the mega bass function for this phone..

i've had the W850i for over a year even declining to change my phone as i find it such an easy phone to use. Apart from the phone turning off itself every so often i love the phone.The only thing i need to find out is if i can insatll lets say an 8GB memory card to boost my tracks as i listen to my MP3 all the time & it's just great n easy to use & the sound is easy on the ear. I have noting but praise for the phone & fine accessories for the phone is equally as good. Please can someone tell me if i can get an 8GB memory as i so want to boost my extended tracks please

This phone was brilliant to start off with... had no problems. I have had the phone for 18 months now and for 16 of thoes 18 months it has been turning itself off sayin USIM INACTIVE then turning back on again... the most annoying thing about this is that it used to do it in the middle of a conversation or text message. The fact that my provider (3) wouldnt let me swop my phone for 12 months and then i had to get another contract with them was slightly disheartening, so i didnt bother and kept the rubbish phone. Did anyone else have this problem???

Bought this phone for a present, and its only 4 months old and has been off for repair twice. All the buttons are cracking in half, and then when it came back from the repairers they seem to have put is back together misaligned. The new buttons have began to crack again.

Ok. 18 months later, I've had this phone the whole time. I've seen a few untruths below, the biggest about saving only one call. Wrong. Mine will tell you the last 30 calls, whether made, received or missed. Also, my phone sync's with Outlook seamlessly. The slider mechanism is very durable. And the screen is as well. My phone lives in the same pocket as my keys, and although there are minor scratches on the screen, there are no serious ones. I rarely use a phone for the internet, but I was able to chat on MSN whilst on holiday in Spain, so no complaints there. I fitted my phone with a 4Gb memory stick, which means I took all my holiday music and didn't listen to the same song twice. All in all, I am very impressed with this phone, and would recommend it to anyone.

WHITE SCREEN OF DEATH..ALMOST GUARANTEED TO GET IT AND VERY HARD TO GET FIXED.Seems to me Sony Ericsson pedal phones that offer much but fail to supply. I know someone who only had her W850i 3 days before the WSOD claimed another victim. You run around like a madman trying various flashes and updates, new lcds etc etc most of which cost you but do not fix it. Beware as this fault affects many types of SE phones.

If im honest, this phone is not all its worked up to be. Its easy to use, yes. It has a good storage for music, yes. But, thats about it. Its hard to text on as the keys are so close together. It will not let me do video calling. The camera is rubbish even if it is 2.0 it seems like it has no megapixels at all! The music doesn't go very loud, It isn't very attractive. After a while you just want to smash it because its that horrible to have as a phone! Trust, do not buy it! I had the choise of any phone and i had to go with this one, i totally regret it now. It is dyer! Trust. Anyone on here who is saying its amazing or whatever is just being nice or excageratting. I am going for either the Nokia N95 or N96 now or the Samsung G600 :) either one of them. But i HATE this phone, cant stand it :@ its so annoying. I have dropped it like once and it froze for days, its so hard to text on, when you slide the phone down it doesn't close the applications which always annoys me.You have to exit every application your on to go back to the main homepage. The interenet doesn't work. You cant stall many numbers. I hate it, its nothing compared to the phones im getting. Trust, DONT GET IT. I know, i had it for 3 months and now i cannot put up with it, I HATE IT.

ive got a w850i and had no problems with it what-so-ever. it might not have an excellent camera but the music is phenomonal as you can set up a song for your ringtone, message tone, alarm tone or contact ringtone. id give it a 4 star rating, its worth it!

the phone was great. but now after 14months of usage, it is starting to act up with the screen giving problems 24/7. i sometimes get a call and the phone rings but the screen remains black. recommend this for the music and looks but not if u plan to keep the phone for a long time..

Very good package, phone has all you need, camera is good enough for most things but not for that very special photo. I have had mine for about a year the only real grumble is the calendar alert, why can one not change it, or at least make it louder or longer? Grrr I think the screne scratches easily, so use a screne protector.

Ive had this phone a year now, it was fine an now alls started to go wrong, the headphone connectors dont work, my phone freezes up, and also the memory stick slot for the 1gb expandly memory card doesnt work anymore, so i can only have aroun 3 songs on my phone.

I've had this mobile for over a year and it was good to start with but now it has absolutely died for no reason and i can only play music cuz the screen is white. After my 12 month warranty the phone completely died meaning i had to buy a new one. Not very good, quite basic and very chunky. The speaker is crackly if you play a song too loud and the camera is bad quality. If you do want to buy this phone make sure you only want it for a few months. It is known to die very quickly.

This is an excellent phone! I would like to respond to a couple of previuosly made points. The closing the slide does not end the call so that you can put the phone in your pocket and walk around while still talking with bluetooth. Also for those people struggling with the software, XP sees the phone as a drive and you can transfer music/files directly without the pants sony software ( or you can use a memory card adapter and use a card reader on your PC if you have one. If you don't like the browser use opera mini. With a bluetooth sat nav reciever and Nav4all it make a great sat nav. I've had mine 2 years now and its bombproof!!! You have to play with it a bit to get the best from it.....

I've had this phone for 18 months now and have loved every second of it. The music player is brilliant, and unlike nearly every other phone, the supplied headset is fantastic quality. The software is ok, but I found the Disc2Phone hard to use, and in the end just dragged and dropped tracks into the folder on the phone. Messaging and all the other usual features is fine, as you would expect, and it can store a lot of messages at a time. My only dissappointment is the camera. If you want a similar phone with a better camera, go for the W810i, which has auto-focus, which makes a huge difference. Having said that, the camera is ok for the odd shot, but if you are looking for a camera phone, don't go for this one.

For you that are interested in getting this phone i strongly advise you against it. For the first two months of having the phone it stopped charging from the charger, the only way to charge it was on the USB connection. The it decides to turn itself off when it feels like it and it even has days where it doesnt turn on AT ALL.Also it never picks up any signal and as if thing could not get worse all of my text messages, pictures and music ect have been cleared completely TWICE. I never ever want another sony ericsson phone again, it was my first and definately my last.

I've had this phone 18 months now and I have loved it so much that I really am having trouble deciding which one to get now as my contract is coming to an end! Everything about it is fab, my navigation pad has cracked but like I said I've had it 18 months and it's been dropped god knows how many times. Nothing lasts forever. I'll be really sad to say goodbye to this brill phone. I want another sony ericsson but reading so many negative reviews is putting me off, maybe it's people setting their standards too high and expecting super machines for phones. Anyway, anyone wanting to buy this phone, I would totally recommend it! I even managed to convert a friend from nokia to buy one of these and she loves it too!

I Had This Fone On Contract Last Novemeber & Couldnt Wait To Get It.. I Was The Only Person I Knew That Had It. But Then When Christmas Came.. I Noticed Everybody Had It. & Cudnt Wait To Change It. The Battery Last Long. Good Quailty Sound. Dont Like The Cam Much. When I First Had My Fone.. I Noticed The Down Button On My Button Had A Crack Init. I Left It For A While Untill One Day! I Clicked Down & The Crack Shot Up & Broke The Top Button.. Now The Whole Top Buttons Can Come Off & The Little Sheet Of Buttons Come Off So It Leaves Me With No Buttons. Then Above My Screen, The Bottens Have Come Off So Im Just Left With A Speaker. This May Not Happen To Your Sony Ericsson.. But Happend To Mine & My Two Mates Fone's. Another Thing.. My Fone Always Used To Switch's Itself On & Off. & I Asked All The People In My Class If That Happends.. & They've All Sed Yess It Does. But Why? I Can Now Change My Fone In May This Year & Cant Wait, But I Dont Know What Fone To Change To! I Love Sony Ericsson's. X
