The good points of the phone:the music... and thats about it, there's not really another good thing about this phone, i couldnt use this thing after about 4 months, i went back to my old motorolla while the contract was still going... The only bad think is that it is quite fat but you soon get used to it as all it's great features charm you! The only thing I regret is losing it and no one returning it :(. Just to give you a bit of history my phone is used very little and still looks brand new out of the box, never been dropped or used to play music from the loud speaker, and still it seems to breakdown. I was told to keep away from Sony Ericsson and i never listened, i dont think i will ever buy anouther or recommend one to anyone. It's bulky (has weakened my jacket pocket it's so heavy, and looks like a brick too); it's difficult to text (buttons are small and impractical); the slider is annoying (it doesn't always automatically lock the phone when you slide up - so you can end up calling people from your pocket); and it's complicated trying to sync with PC, so in nearly 2 years I still haven't done it. And did I mention the battery life isn't that great (and never has been)? The bars go up and down, they have a mind of their own. Only kept this so long because I have another phone, which I use more... Features are great, battery life is excellent and the music quality is fantastic even on full volume!!! Doesn't matter about the camera only being 2 megepixels, does the job for me! Fantastic when it was working, if a bit chunky, but what's the point in having an awesome phone which is broken? I have an eyesight problem and needed a phone with a large clear screen. easy to use controls, and diddn't feel as though I was carrying a brick around in my pocket. This phone fits the bill perfectly. It has everything and more that I need but most importantly for me is the sound quality, and this is excellent on both music and speach. The screen clarity is also excellent this added to the easy to use menu system adds to the phone's ease of use. The camera isn't the best, but still better than average. That said, this phone majors on its sound quality not it's camera. If you want one to take good pictures you'll need the upper end of the K series that use Sony's Cybershot camera technology. You do have to be wary of the large screen though as this does make it vulnerable if it's put in your pocket without a case, My first W850i got broke so I replaced it imediately with another one it is that good. Build quality is excellent. I have heard that some people have had problems using the buttons, but in my opinion you can't get much worse than a partially sighted bloke with fingers like a bunch of bannana's, and I'm having no probs with it at all. I am so pleased that for this phone Sony Ericsson got rid of that pain in the butt joystick they seemed to like inflicting every purchaser with. The new direction pad is much easier to use adds to the allready good looks of the phone. To sum up the W850i is by far the best phhone I've ever had or tried and beleive me I've had the use of a lot of phones over the last fifteen years. Mine broke within 5 months of having that phone Rating: Reviewed by Lawz on 21/08/2008 had this phone for nearly a year now.. treated me well until the official charger blue my battery up inside it. it now turns off if you slide the phone fast, of sometimes just randomly, also turns itself off when full charged? i hate the fact when it's on file transfer mode, and you unplug it, it restarts? walkman button is in a very stupid place, it's to close to the up button. the camera is okay, but needs good lighting for it not to come out fuzzy and bland. i like the apps and games avaliable for download on this phone, battery life is poor though. also another negative, there's only one socket, which is for either charging, or headphones etc maybe they should just introduce seperate sockets? screen size is okay, but isnt bright enough, even when brightness is on 100% also the phones fairly brick-ish, but doesnt do any harm, i'm used to brick phones, hence the nokia 6600 xD im never getting a s.e again.. i'm getting a 14 day trial on iphone 3g, i wonder how that'll be. That is the highlight of the fone for me. When i first got it i really wasnt sure about the look, but you really do get used to it. The camera is ok, have seem better ones other makes such as samsung and nokia, but can deal with it. The video is the main thing that bothers me, its a big let down. I find texting very easy to do and the fone is lovely in the hand to use. Its quiet bulky, not really a pocket fone. But if your someone who wants a music fone, nice to use and general fone, then this is the one for you!!! It was a great phone with great music features and I really liked the videodj app. the only bad points were that for some reason it didn't have track Id on any of the menus so i couldn't use it even though it said that the phone had it and after a few weeks it stopped keeping records of my calls but overall it was a really good phone. Im skint at the moment so im gonna buy a k550i to replace it. I've seen a few untruths below, the biggest about saving only one call. Wrong. Mine will tell you the last 30 calls, whether made, received or missed. Also, my phone sync's with Outlook seamlessly. The slider mechanism is very durable. And the screen is as well. My phone lives in the same pocket as my keys, and although there are minor scratches on the screen, there are no serious ones. I rarely use a phone for the internet, but I was able to chat on MSN whilst on holiday in Spain, so no complaints there. I fitted my phone with a 4Gb memory stick, which means I took all my holiday music and didn't listen to the same song twice. All in all, I am very impressed with this phone, and would recommend it to anyone. Its hard to text on as the keys are so close together. It will not let me do video calling. The camera is rubbish even if it is 2.0 it seems like it has no megapixels at all! The music doesn't go very loud, It isn't very attractive. After a while you just want to smash it because its that horrible to have as a phone! Trust, do not buy it! I had the choise of any phone and i had to go with this one, i totally regret it now. It is dyer! Trust. Anyone on here who is saying its amazing or whatever is just being nice or excageratting. I am going for either the Nokia N95 or N96 now or the Samsung G600 :) either one of them. But i HATE this phone, cant stand it :@ its so annoying. I have dropped it like once and it froze for days, its so hard to text on, when you slide the phone down it doesn't close the applications which always annoys me.You have to exit every application your on to go back to the main homepage. I would like to respond to a couple of previuosly made points. The closing the slide does not end the call so that you can put the phone in your pocket and walk around while still talking with bluetooth. Also for those people struggling with the software, XP sees the phone as a drive and you can transfer music/files directly without the pants sony software ( or you can use a memory card adapter and use a card reader on your PC if you have one. If you don't like the browser use opera mini. With a bluetooth sat nav reciever and Nav4all it make a great sat nav. I've had mine 2 years now and its bombproof!!! The music player is brilliant, and unlike nearly every other phone, the supplied headset is fantastic quality. The software is ok, but I found the Disc2Phone hard to use, and in the end just dragged and dropped tracks into the folder on the phone. Messaging and all the other usual features is fine, as you would expect, and it can store a lot of messages at a time. My only dissappointment is the camera. If you want a similar phone with a better camera, go for the W810i, which has auto-focus, which makes a huge difference. For the first two months of having the phone it stopped charging from the charger, the only way to charge it was on the USB connection. The it decides to turn itself off when it feels like it and it even has days where it doesnt turn on AT ALL.Also it never picks up any signal and as if thing could not get worse all of my text messages, pictures and music ect have been cleared completely TWICE. The main problem with it is that you can easily accidentally unlock it in your pocket because of the annoyingly placed walkman button and the two function buttons next to it. Shame really because I thought it was great when I got it, but I've had to turn off all the good features to stop it costing me an arm and a leg. This will be the last Sony Ericsson I own. Did have two occasions of crashed system, but all was good after restarting the phone. very basic diary included, yet handy. i dont use much of the music features (eg trackID and stuff), but i dont think their much useful unless your a music freak. downloading music from computer takes a lonnnnng time, but hey with 1g memory it prob is suppose to take so long! I couldn't believe SE thought it was a good idea to have the navigation keys in a rectangle around the numbers 2 and 5. This made texting extremely difficult and caused confusion as to which key you wanted to hit next. When i put my sim in, it showed no contacts, when i had loads. I had to turn it off and on three times before any of my photos appeared. Also, there were three touch screen areas that never once worked the first time i touched them and more often than not took four or five times to make them work. I was looking forward to 'playing' with my new phone and was left extremely disappointed. Sort it out SE. First it kept turning itself off, in the end I had to wedge a piece of paper at the bottom of the battery to keep it connected. Twice now I have had to take it back because the software has crashed. Orange's CS is rubbish as well, they send the thing back but dont offer a replacment. And thats on a contracts - result - no phone for over a week! Rating: Reviewed by Lee on 25/01/2008 This is a really good phone but just had the same problem Noelle had below (just search) the keys weren't working properly so sent it off for repair and it comes back with liquid damage, I'm very careful with my phones anyway, so it had a screen protector and a case to protect against such things, i rarely use it outside, not in cold or wet conditions, its always in dry areas, and now I'm told i either claim on insurance 30 quid excess or if i didn't have it, 300 for a new one!! I got this phone as a replacement from my old reliable K750i. I got it as I thought it was a really nice looking phone. Im on Vodafone..but I dont have a clue how to make the internet work or the TrackID, which is one main reason why I liked this fone. I am always listening to songs and thinking 'I wonder who sings that'. I dont even know how to work it! It has very slow reactions, when you slide it up, it takes ages for the screen to come up. It has done this ever since I got it [August 2007]. Its a little bit big aswell, like clumpy and large. The camera is average, although if I had wanted a really good camera phone I wouldnt have bought this one. But the K750i was a 2mp and so is this one. But this one isnt a patch on my old one. The Walkman is good, and has lots of memory and is very simple to use :D. Overall, quite a good phone. I highly reccomend it 2 small points to add as negatives: 1) battery life short ( I play music commuting for 2 hours each day), and maybe 3 phone calls, battery needs recharging every other day. 2)very difficult to swich providers when abroad, it finds a signal quickly and easily, but almost impossible to switch manually, so have incurred some expensive phone calls in the USA!! You can't change this and whichever mood the phone is in you can never do what you want without plugging and unplugging it several times which is never any good when it is insisting that you DONT unplug it. I also don't like the way texts are sent with literally one touch meaning abandoned drafts you might want to delete can be sent and gone before you have a chance to stop them going out. The camera is 2.0 megapixel but all shots are poor quality no matter how careful you are. The videoplayer is poor as well. Plenty of space to stick in a few episodes of Lost or Southpark but the video is jumpy and sound quickly out of sync no matter what format of file you manage to get on. The phone is so close to being a good phone, annoying flaws ruin it though. Even the official website for downloading games and ring tones is rubbish and never works. Sony have been aware of the problem for months but it is ALWAYS going to be repaired, nothing ever happens. Get a Nokia people! The Walkman is obviously it's best function, and the radio is an essential feature for me. The menu's work well, with good use of short cut keys (a big impovement on my old W810i). If you want a great camera, get a CyberShot, but the W850i's is fine for snap shots down the pub. And mine has survived a year of me bashing it about! The buttons aren't too small, but at the same time, it's a modern, compact phone. The joystick replacement pad works so much better than the joystick ever could, and I've had no problems with it at all. The music features don't disappoint - the sound quality is great, the storage capacity is brilliant, and the handy orange walkman button makes listening to music whilst doing other things easy. The camera isn't as good as the K800 but to be honest, it's good enough. If you want a better camera than this, you should really be thinking of buying a digital camera, not a cameraphone. It also has a handy light which functions as a flash. I've also found that it's surprisingly durable for such a sophisticated phone! I've bounced mine several times, it's got wet, and it works just fine. The large screen is pretty scratch-resistant too - I shove mine in pockets with keys, in jeans, you name it, and no damage whatsoever. It's the perfect phone. It is a great phone in most respects compared to any other I've owned. But I bought it for the MP3 player feature and unfortunately this just isn't up to scratch. The sound is fine but it can't organise music files by name or track number, meaning that for each album you copy to it you have to manually create a playlist and actually tell the player in which order to play tracks - even if they are numbered! It's painfully slow to copy music too.. The camera is of little use due to poor picture quality. It does have some other features which are good, Music mate for example and u can use the alarm even when the phone's off. But the main features could function much better. Not a smart phone unfortunately. These are: a) Sometimes it crashes and won't turn on again for a while. It also freezes a lot too. b) While messaging sometimes I add the wrong sender name. It takes forever to delete the sender and add another one. Lots of little button presses when it could of been a lot simpler. c) I wish it could list the names AND numbers of the contacts in the phone book as it only really lists the names, so to get the phone number you have to almost call that person if you're no good at remembering numbers. d) I wish it would allow you to listen to the radio without putting the headphones in and last but not least e) The headphones that come with the phone can break easily and you can lose the earpieces if you don't put them away in the bag after each use. However, a couple of things bother me about the design. Firstly, the battery cover (on the back of the phone) is really tricky to get off. There is no release catch like on most phones, you simply have to slide it off...but that isn't as easy as it sounds as there is nothing really to grip. Secondly, once you've got the battery cover off and taken the battery out, it is near impossible to get the SIM card out. I've been trying to do this since my W850i has recently been having problems sending and receiving calls and texts, but this may be a problem with my network rather than with the phone. Photolight is pointless at night because it doesnt make a real difference to the pictures. Sometimes the phones keypad doesnt lock itself (mainly when you close it while sleep mode clock is on). A crack has appeared on the 4-way directional pad (doesnt affect the working of the phone, however, as time goes on it doesnt look good despite it working fine). However, its still a great music phone, and if people really love music and are not fussed about the camera, its worth getting this phone. I've had the phone for three days and am going to go back to my Samsung SGH-D500 until I can find a more suitable replacement. Firstly, this phone is packed with great features and a very intuitive control system. In terms of what it does as a phone, it's fine. It's the shell surrounding all of this which causes the problems. For any slider phone, it's absolutely essential that the slide mechanism feels good. This one desn't. It's loose, wobbly and feels poorly designed in terms of the way it snaps open and closed. The fact that the front and back sections of the phone are not held together tightly means that even the basic controls are annoying, because the top half squirms so much when you use the buttons. The joypad is a great idea, but poorly executed. The buttons are simply far too stiff to be practical, and when you add this stiffness to the looseness of the front section of the phone, it;s a recipe for irritation. Similarly, texting is uncomfortable due to the looseness of the battery cover on the rear of the phone. It's not loose in the sense that it comes off easily, but rather that there's a lot of 'give' when you squeeze the back of the phone for purchase on the keys. I have also experienced software problems recently, such as, losing my saved game on Juiced, lol, and the phone restarting for no reason. Finally, you aint able to end a call by closing the slider. I have had problems with dust gathering under the screen, this has been sent back for repair, but after only a couple of weeks the dust is gathering again. It does not look like the screen is securely attached to the phone at all as it moves when pressed! Apart from that the sound quality is very good, and the camera is good. But it is a heavy and rather large clumpy phone, and as it was delivered to me in white (instead of black as I requested) it is rather like a kitchen appliance or somethings of the like. Not sure whether to clean my teeth with it or hang it on the kitchen wall! Overall, very disappointed and will not buy a Sony Ericsson again. Rating: Reviewed by mollie on 05/06/2007 i have had this phone since saturday and it is amazing! i love it to bits! its easy to use and looks good too! i would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a phone! it can text and call like any other phone but it can also hold loads of songs! hundreds! it says it can hold 1000 but i havent got that many yet! you can have video calls with people and watch tv! its got great memory and its an mp3 phone so the music can be played extra loud! you can play music whilst doing other things and the bluetooth is really quick! songs send really quick on bluetooth. i have the black one because i thought the white looked quite tacky but i am really pleased with my phone! if anyone has commented on here saying its rubbish they are wrong! ignore them! i havent found any faults with it at all! the camera is good and everything else is good. everything i needed came with the phone like radio anteni, headphones, charger, usb cable etc! i ordered it off the internet and recieve d it the next day. the only thing i would say that is bad is my network. i am on t.mobile and the signal is rubbish but a friend told me that if you put your phone against your head just above your ear and hold it there for a min it gives you signal. and i tried it and it worked!!! now whenever i dont have signal thats what i do! hehe! anyway overall this phone is outstanding i love it! Good clear screen and I like sony ericssons graphics. Nice weight and feel to it.The battery life isn't quite as good as I was led to believe though and the slide mechanisms not very smooth. However, I've now had 3 handsets all of which have had a fault, hence it's not being marked as highly as it might. One of them kept crashing and locking, another one had an intermittent fault on the camera view finder (as in you couldn't see what picture you were taking, but could still take the picture) and the third had a really irritating jump and flicker on the screen. I'm now on the hunt for a suitable alternative...... The W850i has a very easy-to-use interface, with a superb screen and a camera which surpasses the quality of all the 2 Mega Pixel Nokia cameras that I have seen. It also has excellent battery life. The only thing that lets the phone down is the poor build quality, which I have to say is the same for most Sony Ericsson phones that have come out in the past 4 years. (Since they moved manufacturing to China.) You can also update the firmware over GPRS which is very convienent. Signal sensitivity is also better than my old Nokia N91. Overall, a great package. Phone 1, screen cracked within a month, Phone 2, Crackled and hissed, Phone 3, wouldn't make or receive calls for more than 10 seconds, Phone 4, the 8 key decided to become the power key and guess what I have in my SIM PIN, yup an 8, Phone 5, told Orange to stick it and rejected it. The phone itself when it worked was excellent, great camera, great sound, great features. Problems, phone unlocks itself whilst in your pocket, texting can be a pain at first. If the phone was better built I would have given it 5 stars, I'm not sure if blame is with SE or those retarded muppets at Orange. Seriously, steer clear of Orange. Great, great great phone, however there are two things to consider when opting for this phone, one: the technology, and two: the service that comes with it, i opted for this phone over a hundred others because of the technology and disregarded the service, these phones are very clever, functional phones, but like all over-complicated phones, go wrong very quickly, microphone failures, ''wobbly'' build, turning off without warning etc... ive had four handsets in as many months from tmobile, and refuse to buy another, and sony ericsson dont want to know after your warranty period, so make sure you get an extended warranty or insurance with this phone. i am returning to my nokia n70 which still does the job. With enough memory to store up to 1000 tracks who needs an ipod any more. Loads of people are complaining about the camera quality when it is perfectly acceptable for the casual photographer or catching those amazing moments. If you don't have one yet go and buy one now. I chose the w850i because I am a life long sony ericsson fan and i didn't want to go for the k800i as every one seems to have one. Although now every one seems to have w850i's. Overall all im impressed with the phone it has 1GB of memory and a the greate mp3 played we have all loved since the w800i I was hugly dissapointed with the camara although its 2mp you can only zoom in if you reduce the quility to VGA. This phone is clearly aimed at the music market which you cant fault it on. just a shame about the camara. Easily the best phone I have owned. The only problem (and I won't blame the phone for this) is that I was lied to by 3 when they sold me the contract and my 3g coverage is awful. Rating: Reviewed by CJ on 10/05/2007 Had this phone for about 6 months now, and its the best phone Ive had since I had my faultless Nokia 8310. For me, as I use this as a business phone, battery life is all important, and for me it is excellent, comfortably makes 4 days use for me, including using it for about an hour a day on walkman. My old phone, a nokia 6230 barely lasted 2 days, which IMHO is rubbish, and that had half the functionality of this phone. The camera is okay, more than usable, its not the best on the market on the market in that respect, but if like me, you find it less important, and only used for spontaneous photography its great. If I want to take serious pictures I use my proper camera, which I would regardless of what the camera is like on any phone on the market, as its far superior. The slide works well enough, at first it was solid, but Ive noticed now its developed a little bit of movement when slid down, not annoying, but hopefully will get no worse. Also when sliding, its far too easy to turn the walkman feature on, which if your sliding it down and putting it in your pocket can be annoying, because if you turn it on, it wont key lock when you slide, meaning that the WWW is just an accidental key press away due to having a WWW button the front. I see some people copmplain that the slide is only partially active, it isnt that much of a problem, if you dont use the slide to answer the calls, you wont get into the habbit of trying to end them with the slide (which doesnt work) Automatic key lock (ie not from using the slide) doesnt seem to work, if you leave your phone in one of the menu positions, it will not keylock at all, which I find annoying Bluetooth connectivity is excellent, I have handsfree in teh car and it works near perfectly, you do however have to programme your own voice dialling, and this occasionaly fails to recognise sometimes, albeit less frequently than any other phone Ive had. The 1GB memory card is excellent, and I have provided myself with hours of music and still ahve lots of storage space for other things My main gripe with the phone is not really about the phone at all, rather the software for the PC, although the functins on it are good, the programme struggles at installation, it is cumbersome and can slow your computer up even when not in use, and from time to time it corrupts itself and needs re installing, and its very frustrating. It is a great phone, and till date i had no problem, but today my camera doesn't save pictures. Whenever i click pictures, after hitting capture button, it sends me back to main menu without saving picture. So what problems did i have with this phone. - Memory card reader stopped reading memory stick after 1 month. it stopped recognizing the memory card and always says 'No file' on the memory card. I have a Vaio laptop and I can insert the memory stick directly to the laptop and everytime i do that my laptop recognize the memory card and display the informaion correctly so it's the reader on the phone that has problem. - This is a music phone but yet I find sound quality from this phone quite rubbish even with my Sony MDR EX-90. If you're very concerned about sound quality, I wouldn't recommend this phone. - Camera quality is so bad, it's unbelievable. No Auto Focus and pictures always look blurred when I look at it on computer screen. Needs ALOT of light! - Microphone decided to go off randomly for a short period of tme during calls - I find it very amusing that you can recieve a call by opening the slide but you CAN'T end call by closing the slide!! it's something very simple that can be fixed but seems like SE missed out on that. It takes good quality video and still images, which can then be sent (once reduced in size), via MMS to other compatible phones. It has 3G capability which allows higher data transfer speeds, allowing you to connect to the internet and download larger files - such as games, applications, screensavers, themes, music, ring-tones etc) with ease. 3G is also used for video-calling. 3G is not yet available in all locations - you can check whether there is coverage in your area on the Vodafone website. The main reason for buying this phone for many people will be the built in Walkman digital music player and radio, both of which give high quality sound. The music player supports AAC (the format used by Apple) as well as MP3 (and several other formats). It comes supplied with a 1 GigaByte Memory Stick Duo. Navigating the phone is fairly straight-forward, as the user interface is quite intuitive. A lot of attention has been paid to style, as the phone looks good, and you can change the appearance quite simply by selecting (or downloading) a different `theme'. It also has some great ring-tones pre-installed. It comes supplied with software on a CD-ROM to allow you to convert your CD's to MP3 or AAC and then transfer them to the phone. As well as transferring files such as photos or video clips etc. to and from your PC for viewing or printing. I found installing this software to be slightly trying as each application is installed individually - however I got there in the end! I am really pleased with this phone and would recommend it to anyone looking for a stylish phone with the latest technology. As a Walkman, really good although to be honest it's not a feature I'll use too often. I liked the FM radio with a nice scan feature. Problems? Too easy to switch to walkman mode when opening the phone. Doesn't hang up after a call and set the keylock when you close the phone. Why the hell not? The screen saver cuts in far too quickly and I can't find any way to change the time before screen saving mode cuts in. The user manual is abysmal, unless you want to know how to shoot video, stills, make music and all the other super cool 'phone' things. Goodies? Bluetooth, IRDA, USB cable, Nice Headphones, good contacts management and a useable camera for a change (albeit only 2 Mpixels)Voice dialing that actually works! However, there are a number of serious deficiences with this phone, particularly if you want to use the phone for business - I was upgrading from the P910i - that made me take it back after two weeks of frustrated installing and re-installing the phone software, PC drivers, Microsoft Outlook and IE7. 1. On my PCs (Dell XP Pro desktop & laptop) the Synch Station software hangs Internet Explorer 7 and the PC when you lift the phone from the CDS-60 desk cradle (purchased separately). The only way to restart the PC is to physically unplug the power cable from the wall. 2. The supplied headphones are 'tinny' and fall out constantly. The volume isn't that great either. 3. The handsfree occasionaly cuts in of its own accord and dials the first voice dial number in your contacts - very annoying for the person on the receiving end. 3. When you transfer an Album ripped from CD to the phone the tracks are not arranged in album order (even if the files are numbered 01... 02... etc) but in some apparently random order. 4. Album Art is hit and miss affair - I eventually found that you need to drag and drop album art using iTunes if you want to see album art. And the slider has a really good solid feel to it, so its well put together. However, beleive it or not, a call cannot be ended by closing the slider. A call can be answered by opening the slider, but not ended by closing it. THIS IS A DESIGN FEATURE. please note "feature" was used very loosely. Another thing i am used to is being able to find my phone in the dark. There is absolutely no light from the phone when its in standby. This is appaerntly normal for most phones these days but i'm used to having something displayed somewhere on the outside of the phone meaning i can find it without turning a light on. So if none of what i've said bothers you, then go ahead and get it because otherwise it is good. maybes i've just been spoiled by samsungs for too long. Out of nowhere I noticed that it had no sound, I couldnt hear it ring or text messages, it was as if my phone was on permanent silent. I took it in for a check up and it was sent off for 2 weeks. I got a call today saying that it was irepairable due to liquid damage. Now i know for definates that my phone has come no where near any water or liquids. I have been searching for information and some web pages said that your phone can be damaged by any moisture! How on earth can a phone be made to be so sensitive that something like moisure from being in a pocket can damage the speaker losing the ability to hear your phone ring. I think this is absolutely ridiculous as basically i have been told that if i have insurance then i can pay an excess of £25 and get a new phone. Thank god i took out insurance otherwise my phone would be useless and i couldnt do much about it. So wh atever you do get insurance. I do really like this phone and will give it another chance but i am disapointed because all the SE phones Ive had have been so reliable and have lasted for such a long time! Really pleased with 95% of it and sorry to have to report any faults.But - I had to return the first W850i because the earpiece speaker on the unit ( not the seperate headphones) distorted badly after about a week's use.I got it replaced straight away and after about another week , this one did the same .This time it was repaired and after less than 2 weeks - same fault , repaired again and same fault a third time. This time its going back for good. Shame really - its otherwise a great phone and everything else about it I love.The only other criticism though might be the menu for the Walkman being a bit messy and not so easy to organise tracks with. I have had no problems with this phone yet nd would strongly recommend it to someone looking to upgrade! People are saying it doesn't save your missed calls etc. I don't really understand where your coming from there because it does!!!! The only down side is that the software to copy music onto the phone is a little slow!! No real shake though!! Sound quality is sound (excuse the pun). I've got 4 albums saved at the moment with over 3/4 of the memory left! The new walkman 2 software makes it better than the w810i, w800i etc. Also it contains 3G and track ID. The main reason why I bought this phone was because of the excellent music experience, cards can go up to 4gb on this phone, good camera and fm radio is a plus. Upgraded from a Nokia 6280 (Possibly the most irritatingly buggy phone I've ever had the dis-pleasure of owning - seriously if you've ever owned one, you'll know exactly what I mean)and I haven't looked back. Nokia should take a look at this phone if they want to sort out their awful sliders. Music wise it's made my iPod nano redundant. Got room for about 400 of my favourite tracks (I'm using a high-ish bit rate to encode - otherwise it'll hold 800 plus) and the sound quality is awesome. The bundled earphones are OK, but you can plug in different ones if you want. Camera is excellent - nice crisp images, despite the lack of auto-focus. Screen is pretty damn good too - nice and clear and very sharp. Menu is pretty standard, not as good a Nokia, who really are the Kings of the User Interface, but it works like a charm. I've got big fingers, and was a little worried about the size of the tiny keys on the front slide, but SonyEricsson have obviously used some common sense and spaced them exceptionally well as I have no difficulty using them. Battery life is excellent - I've been using it quite a bit in Walkman mode and making calls and stuff and I'm only on the second charge. The only niggle I've got is that it doesn't seem to want to link up to my Laptop using Bluetooth, but I think this has more to do with my Laptop than the phone, as it's connected to every other phone I tried. Links up fine using the supplied USB Data cable, but SE need to sort out their driver software as it takes about 6 attempts to insatll everything properly. Facewarp made me cry laughing, TrackID is especially cool for the pub quiz, and I've found an awesome app on the phone that lists and shows you loads of guitar chords. It's a novelty I know, but great for me. I would recommend this phone to anyone, and if the option was available give it 6 stars! Have it for about 2 weeks while a friend of mine got the new N73 music edition, the N73 ME is too much better; slimmer, better camera (3.2mp CZ lenses) even its plastic cover is higher quality. Well, the W850i is awful phone; poor o/s, it’s so far than the impressive N73 S60 where you can install additional programs and modify folders and icons easily, in addition to read PDF and office file! Cheap look plastic cover and buttons are very small Less internal memory then the N73 (16mb vs. 40 mb)!!! Music? At the time, i had a Samsung E900, which was a little too basic and featureless to mirror my needs. Without trying to come across as being bias, the W850i is without doubt the best phone sony ericsson have produced up to now. It's packed with every feature possible in a mobile phone, built in MP3 player, 2MP camera (wich takes outstanding photos), video recorder, bluetooth, infrared, image and video editing programs loaded into the phone, and an extra little camera on the front of the phone for video calling! The phone also comes with a 1GB memory card, which is more then enough space for plenty of tracks! The W850i features a 'flight mode'. If you are taking a journey on an aircraft, simply turn your phone from a phone/MP3 player, to just an MP3 player at the touch of a button, genius. The W850i features everything you could possibly need from a mobile phone, and a few little extras! Although, as i mentioned i may sound bias, however i would seriously reccomend this amazing peica of technology to anyone looking for a fun phone to use, as opposed to a tedius business phone. Probably one of the worst phones i have had in recent years. It is very poor on battery life especialy if using as a walkman(which kind of undermines the only worthwhile feature of the phone.) It has very illogical sub menus after you get past the desk top icons. The calendar is a pain to use and the reminders are easily missed, trying to sync with outlook is near to impossible. Writing text can be a real mission, it is a very slow and clumsy process. I'm not originally from the Nokia/ Samsung or Sony camp so I'm not going to shoot neither manufacturer down! The MP3 player is just brilliant. Superb sound, particularly with mega bass. The camera was good too - better than I thought it would be for a 2mp. Battery life, reception and the screen are all top drawer. My problem with this phone is the build quality. The rear cover 'creaks' when texting which ruins it for me. When taking pictures, you can feel a small amount of play between the two sections. The naviagtion keys can also be uncomfortable after prolonged use but that is a minor criticism. Its better than the duff joysticks. If it was screwed together just a little bit better it'd be perfect. Have always had Nokias in the past and was loathesome to change as I was used to the menus and sms but after having had the terrible Nokia 6680 I decided it was time to change and how glad I am that I did. Texting is easy to get used to if you are coming from a Nokia background. The memory is plenty for a few albums and all the usual multimedia phone options are there e.g assigning individual photos and ringtones to numbers etc. Its also extremely easy to install software, games etc and to link to your computer to transfer music files. You can also opt to turn the phone on into 'flight mode' so that you can use the mp3 player on a flight without causing it to crash. These sony kids have thought of everything!!! The music player and sound is outstanding as are the games and 1GB memory card! It also has many awesome features such as a face warp which is fun and a track ID system which is very impressive. Rating: Reviewed by Ben UK on 13/01/2007 Well having owned both the SE W550i and W810I before , I find this phone is sort of a hybrid between the the 2 phones . From the W550I it sports great music features such as stereo widening and a very loud speaker that really pumps out the bass and the from the W810 , it has expandable memory and a 2 megapixel camera. The added bonus is that its a 3g phone so you'd be able to make vid calls aswell . The only downside is that its camera quality is very mediocre compared to my 801i's (no auto focus or the ability to zoom in in 2mp mode) . It may not have auto focus, but how could that be a problem when you got 24k gold on it as well. And I think the dancing lights to the beat of the music is also really cool. The weight is a tad bit of a problem but not that much of a problem. Its about the same volume as the really cool 810i. I have no problems with it and it slides like its covered with grease. Awsome phone, my personal favorite. Lots of features and a high quality music player that will store loads of tracks. The camera isn't as high spec as other Sony Ericsson models but is still fairly sharp. If you are after a good camera phone i would'nt suggest this model as it is a music player more than a camera. I had a nokia 6680 before which was a very sturdy, durable phone and I'm finding the w800i a bit flimsy and clunky in comparison and wonder if it will last the 18 months of my contract. Deffinatley worth gettin :P Rating: Reviewed by Lynn on 05/01/2007 I have always been a Samsung girl and loved my pretty pink E530, so when O2 offered me an upgrade (which I didn't really need) I thought I'd pick a phone my son would like and let him have it for his birthday. I picked the SE W850i. Now, as his birthday isn't for a couple of months I thought I'd better charge the battery and just make sure everything worked ok. That was last night. By this afternoon I knew there was no way I was ever giving up this phone! I absolutely love it. Ok, so its not pink but I love the way it lights up and the different themes you can use to customise it. Not being a lover of sliding phones (thats why I didn't go for the Samsung D600 or D900) I was very impressed with the smooth action of this one. Everything about this phone is amazing, the features, the sound quality, and even how it feels in your hand. I've never written a review about a mobile before but just had to about this one. I've read the other reviews here and a couple of people have said that it doesn't store all missed calls etc. so I've just tested this out by ringing mine from my landline and a couple of different mobiles. All the information of the missed calls is on there. I can't speak for other people but mine had no problems at all. The only thing I'm a little apprehensive about is the fact that its the first slider phone that SE have done, I'm hoping that there are no glitches with this that only show up after a period of time. Other than that its totally perfect. Oh and one last thing, I'm not usually a games lover (esp on mobiles) but 2 out of the 3 games that come with this phone are excellent too. There was a compalint from mitko (below) but i think that sounds like an O2 problem as I'm on orange and haven't had a single problem in 2 weeks. Excellent sound quality both on the walkman feature and in call. Nice big screen and good picture quality on the 2 m/px camera. My one complaint is that the phone is too easy to unlock in pocket (ie; just slide it open) and doesn't always lock when you slide it closed. Other than that - its great - better than a nokia any day!!! Rating: Reviewed by Emily on 27/12/2006 I have had this phone for about two days and i love it already! i think it looks great and although the small navagational keys look difficult to use they really arent its also smaller than expected and it looks so good in white. People have mentioned about the camera. I'm not an expert but i think its rather good quality and theres alsorts of effects etc. Also the slide design. Again, i am not an expert but i think it slides really well and it is good that it doesnt shut down calls or applications when you shut it because that way you cant (not that you would) lose what you were doing or hang up on somebody accidentally. definatly not a fault. The memory on this phone is MEGA and the quality of the walkman is absolutely great. you can also listen to music whilst doing other things (ie writing a message) which i think is really useful. Battery life is really very good. one slight problem was connecting the phone to the computer. after i installed all the software, the compute r just didnt recognise it was connected to the phone. After restarting the computer, however, it worked straight away so that might have been my fault. Overall i love this phone so much it has great qualities and lots to do and if you go ahead and buy it you will not be disappointed.
