Sony Ericsson W810i Review

Rating:
Date: 23/11/2006
The Sony Ericsson W810i is a great top of the range Walkman phone. It weighs 99g and is a straight design available in satin black with stylish orange highlights.
It has an excellent 2 megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom, a flash and autofocus. The autofocus automatically focuses the camera on a particular subject rather then using a fixed focus distance. The camera is easy to use and has easy access controls for the zoom, autofocus and the shutter. Controls for the contrast, image effects and size can also be accessed easily and you can switch to video recording mode simply by flicking the joystick up.
The display is a large TFT so can be viewed even in bright sunshine. It has 262k colours and a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels. This is typical for this price range however some phones have a better resolution of 240 x 320 pixels such as the W850i.
The W810i has an excellent stereo MP3 player and an FM RDS radio. It comes with music management software (Disc2Phone) that allows you to transfer music files from a PC to your phone along with the information about the artist, album and the track. The Walkman music player button on the front of your phone instantly activates the music player and plays the last track you were listening to. The RDS feature on the FM radio brings information from the radio station directly to the phone's display.
With 20MB of internal memory and the option to expand this to 512MB with an external memory card, you can store up to 175 songs on your phone.
It has a 40-voice polyphonic sound enabling 40 notes to be played simultaneously so the polyphonic and MP3 ringtones sound good. In this price range however there are phones with a much better polyphonic sound such as the W900i that have a 72-voice sound.
Bluetooth, USB and infrared are the three connections available for this phone. Using the USB cable allows you to connect your phone to a PC, whilst Bluetooth and infrared are a wireless connection to another device with the same capabilities. The range for Bluetooth can be up to 10 metres apart.
The W810i has a full-function internet browser that connects with EDGE giving you up to three times faster communication rates then GPRS.
This phone operates on a quad-band frequency so is capable of working in Europe, America and Japan. The battery life is also really good as it has a standby of 350 hours.
Overall this phone is great value for money with top features such as the Walkman music player and camera. With excellent memory you can use these great features to their full extent. We would definitely recommend this phone.

Features of the Sony Ericsson W810i include:

  • Camera: 2 megapixels, 4x digital zoom, autofocus, photo light,
  • Video Camera: Video clip, Video record, Video streaming, VideoDJ™
  • Display: 262,144-colour TFT, 176x220 pixels

Well i bought this phone very cheaply! I was so suprised as i reckon it is the best phone going! It has excellent camera which i always use to keep my special moments! With some phones you can store up to about 4-15 songs! But with the Sony Ericsson w810i you can store up to 15 albums worth! I love the phone! it is also easy to use! i am always texting and the texting feature is really easy to use. the speaker is also pretty loud compared to other phones. I am 13 and had over 20 phones already! Its only because i dont like the phone! But i will be inteding to keep the sony ericsson for quite some time! about 2 years! i love it! i has everything you need including radio, 2mp camera, to do list, walkman, a torch! Well the torch is more powerful and brighter then an ordinary torch! i can use it whenever i want to! it is very bright! The bluetooth could reach to my family who lives 5 doors away! it is amazing! the screen is really bright and clear! When i speak to people on the phone i can hear them more clearly than on the house phone! the games are also very good! i also love the themes! they are really cool and funny! With just the phone you can be amused and entertained for many hours! it also has shortcut keys which is really helpfull! When i am recording it is very clear and the sound is also clear! i love this phone! The radio is good too it first comes up with the number of the channel then it names the channel after awhile. i love it! the design of the phone is really cool and it looks amaing! the keys are easily used and very stylish! I am glad i ddnt buy the lg chocolate! i had a go on it and the keys are horrible! but i love the keys on here. on the phone you can find things really easily with the search feature! i also like the idea where you can just listen to music with out using the actual phone! so you can use it on a aeroplane! i love this idea! i am listening to my phone right now! also you can store aload of things on the memory card! very easy to use! i highly recomend this phone to every one! IF YOU BUY THIS YOU WONT REGRET IT HONESTLY! The case of the phone is really strong as i have dropped the phone several times it has no affect to it at all! it also has no scratches or dents. very well built! Thank you sony ericsson for bringing this phone into the world! i will stick to sony ericsson! Thanks

SONY-ERICSSON SUCKS!!!...Their design for charging unit is Faulty. This is second phoen I had from sony-ericsson and face the same problem. My Brother and some of his friends also bought and were forced to do rounds of service centre within a month. I had given my w810i model for servicing on 8th dec'06 to Accel frontline (Garage-de-telecom) in chennai. After getting frustated with contradictory replies I had contacted call centre on 18th dec'06 At call centre also they are not able to give proper answer. I am always told to contact again after few days to know the `STATUS" !!!!! . But till now I have not recd. my phone back nor they are giving any satisfatory answer. I am made to run pillar-to-post and no one is ready to respond clearly or take responsibility and tell me that he/she will take action . Can somebody tell me how to tackle this harrassment. In my last phone they did the same thing till warranty date expired .after that they refused to service...What a fool I was to make that mistake again!!

Right, lets start with first impressions. I've got the white version, which I must say is very impressive with its silver-white-orange exterior, and I love the circle theme with the back and keys on the front - much more appealing than the W800i, which my friend has with its ugly grey square keys around the joystick. I love my white W810i and haven't made any marks yet, but I think the black one is more practical... yet somehow too boyish for me. I got this phone as a christmas present after my Motorola E550, and before that I had a basic Nokia 3410. I must say that, even though this is only my 3rd phone, I like Sony Ericsson's Navigation system the best. Photo Quality - Better than my other phones, definetely. It is still a bit fuzzy if it's not quite light enough, but the light (not flash, take note) is very bright, so ideal for taking photos of people/objects near to you. Also, when I saw this phone I had doubts about the keys - they looked extremely small, especially after my E550's huge man-sized keyboard - but I was mistaken. I can probably text faster on this phone than my old one. Whether that's cos i'm used to it now or not, I don't know - my friend tried texting on it and went "aargh, the keys are too small - or have i got fat fingers?" and laughed. Well, they're not too small for me, and I have fatter fingers (!). Oh, and one last thing - I know I'm not meant to advertise so I won't mention URLs, but google it and there are some great websites for downloading free themes, backgrounds etc - it kinda gives the phone a new face when you're a bit bored!... Oops, sorry, you'll never be bored - what was I thinking?? Anyway, overall, a truly great phone.... ok, ok, if you read my review on the e550 that's what i said then.... but, seriously, I mean it this time!

I have had this phone for about two days and i love it already! i think it looks great and although the small navagational keys look difficult to use they really arent its also smaller than expected and it looks so good in white. People have mentioned about the camera. I'm not an expert but i think its rather good quality and theres alsorts of effects etc. Also the slide design. Again, i am not an expert but i think it slides really well and it is good that it doesnt shut down calls or applications when you shut it because that way you cant (not that you would) lose what you were doing or hang up on somebody accidentally. definatly not a fault. The memory on this phone is MEGA and the quality of the walkman is absolutely great. you can also listen to music whilst doing other things (ie writing a message) which i think is really useful. one slight problem was connecting the phone to the computer. after i installed all the software, the computer just didnt recognise it was conn ected to the phone. After restarting the computer, however, it worked straight away so that might have been my fault. Overall i love this phone so much it has great qualities and lots to do and if you go ahead and buy it you will not be disappointed. By the way if you've actually read all this (ive just realised how long it is) i thank you and hope you take it into consideration xx

This phone is great for about 3 months - then the speaker degrades and you can't hear what people are saying in phone calls, it sounds like its on minimum volume but its actually on full. I know its not just me going deaf or having a bad phone because my mates who have this phone say the same thing. During a recent phone call I had to hang up and call back using my mates Samsung D600 because the sound quality was so poor, the difference in sound quality was incredible, the Samsung was light years better. The charger and earphone port on the W810i is pathetic, after a few months of use it stops working properly. Half a dozen of my workmates bought this phone and they've all said they'll never buy a Sony Ericsson again because of the charger/earphone port and the poor volume during phone calls. I won't even mention the OS because you all know how poor it is, thats when it isn't frozen up. This had the potential to be amazing and I love the look and idea of the latest Sony Ericsson phones but in the real world they just don't cut it as a phone. Great for school kids, photos, listening to mp3's (if the headphones work) and posing but rubbish at making phone calls unless you are sat in a labratory quiet room.

Functionality of SE really good - have got used to it very quickly. The phone comes with 512MB but i also bought a 1GB, so now i've got more than 200 songs on it!! It's the best type of phone for teenagers like myself as i'm 15. The camera is really good and the colour, WOW! Couldn't have aked for a better phone. So if you're thinking of getting this phone, do it! You won't regret it. I actually did the same thing you're doing now, reading the reviews, before I chose this phone and now look, did I regret it? No! Trust me, this is the ONE YOU WANT! The keys lights up a beautiful orange which is good at night. Also, it's not heavy and small enough to fit in you're shirt pocket and the games are also good, you will never get bored. The keys are easy to use which i did not expect. You can choose differnt backgrounds for the menu which is cool for different occasions (parties, cinemas). You can also buy other accessories like portable speakers to connect to the phone which are funky on the beach and other cables to connect to other speakers. I won't give evreything away, i'll leave the rest as a secret for you to find out for yourself when you get this phone.

I have been a nokia lady for a while, then the last phone I had I decided to dare try out the Orange SPV c550 - too complicated for me! Anyway, I read about the Sony W810i and it looked amazing, funky and had enough features on it for me to dump my smart phone. I don't usually part with a lot of money easily, but after finding a cracking price for PAYG, I had to have it, and I really have not looked back since. The camera is truly beyond incredible, especially the auto focus and the panorama features! The mp3 is wow. It is so easy to use and it is incredibly easy to transfer files using the enclosed software disc for your computer. You just drag over the tunes you want and click on transfer and everything else happens for you! Despite not being a smart phone, I think it is pretty smart in it's own rights! this phone does not need windows, I mean it keeps it's time when you take the battery out! That is enough of a wow factor for me as I don't have to key the bleedin' date and time in every time I take out the battery. The screen savers are amazing and the screen is very sharp and the keyboard lights up. Texting is easy for me as it is the same as the orange phone. If anyone was to ask me if they should get this phone, I would say yes, even over Nokia. Well done Sony!

I just recieved my sony ericsson w810i fusion white edition! YES IN WHITE! It's stunning! This is the first sony ericsson phone i have ever used, only brought it because of the good reviews its had over the samsung d600 and d900, there nothing compared to this. When i rang my network operator i asked what they woudl adive for me to get, they said this phone and that it is the new nokia. Ive been on nokias' for years and didnt really want to budge, but nokias nowadays don't do alot for me, in appearance. I am now definatly satisfied with my lovely new WHITE sony ericsson w810i, and don't think there is another phone make to beat a sony ericsson. Brillant clear camera, great storage and amazing stereo sound pumping out of the 3 miniture speakers at the back of the phone. Truley is an outstanding phone and would recommend it to anybody!

I got my w810i last week, upgrading from the excellent w800i. Both phones are physically similar in terms of size. The black finish and design of the w810i make it one of the smartest looking phones on the market. The upper set of buttons are very tightly packed together and are a bit fiddly. As the w810i wears a walkman logo you would expect good musical performance, the w810i doesn't let its self down. Very good with dance, rock, pop etc, however there is a noticable hiss, when listening to quieter material. I didn't like the standard headphones supplied, I use Sennheiser PX200 instead. You can buy a 3.5mm headphone jack adapter and cable(couple of inches long) for this phone on ebay. You'll need one if you want to use your own headphones otherwise, as the w810i's body can't accept 3.5mm jack, you will have to connect half way down the standard headphones cable, this will result in a 7ft cable!. The camera is excellent but doesn't really prove how good it is until you displ ay the pictures on a pc. The w810i is very user friendly, has a good battery life, and too many features to mention here. I rate it as a 5 star product as I feel its a good all rounder. Sure the mp3 player and camera won't out perform stand alone units, both my Creative Labs mp3 players(Vision M 30gb and Zen 1gb flash)are better with music. There again it is a mobile phone after all so, if your in the market for a new mobile the w810i is a mobile that does everything well, and won't disapoint.

I have had nokia's for years and love them but was convinced this would be as good if not better. Now on some levels that is true the photo quality excellent and the walkman sound quality is also great.. but have to say that the texting facility still gets me to at screaming point with trying to find how to delete an unwanted draft and the space button being the # but am getting there. My main gripe is that the battery life is so short I've had to buy car charger and extra batteries as mine goes in less than a day and I don't use it very much god help anyone who takes lots of pics and plays music!!. The file sharing on the pc is good and easy have to say but the hard part if finding it all downloaded on to the card lots of pics but to find them all after ha!! and add music then find is a good game to keep the kids occupied for hrs. So while do like the phone give me a nokia I have to say anytime so sorry but have to be honest and it is not an age thing as build and service computers and sortout computer software so not a tecno phobe but life shouldn't be this hard with a busy life!!.

I will be honest I got this phone for the mp3 player, but I find myself never using that, and yet it always comes on, because I accidently hit the Walkman button. and god forbid I need to call someone, at first I thought this phone was the monkeys nuts, but after using it for 3 months, it turns out I was wrong. I would NOT recommend this phone to anyone, as it is not a phone, its a toy!

i took W810i week ago. I am giving my opinions on w810i. Camera quality and Sound quality are very good. But main problem is with battery backup. every day i should charge it. If you use camera batter will go down by evening. Another Major problem is with disply of known number for incoming calls. When you get a call from one of contact list. First you can listen Ring tones and after couple of seconds Number and name of the person will be shown. There are many bugs in UI. where it shows selection of item actually it is not selected. Please dont buy this mobile. Still u prefre then go around with charger at any time you battery will go down.

this phone is as many have already described - above average. Some of the negatives - clunky keys, keys spaced close together, poor battery life, very poor calender function (unable to program recurrent dates, birthdays etc), the "use detail" function to retrieve data within a text is cumbersome (have to resort to cut and paste edit function). Nice phone but the above simple things seem to have been overlooked by SE when designing this phone.

Brilliant! Was looking to replace Nokia 6230i which was actually a really good phone anyway, tried the N70 which was awful and put me of all smart phones and Nokia as a brand. The SE is very easy to get around and does not take long to adjust to after the Nokia, some things seem a bit easier with the traditional Nokia menu's, but overall this phone is better. If you want a phone that works and can also be used as a reasonable camera and music player then you cannot go far wrong with this one, the memory card included is 512MB, good for a fair few photo's and maybe up to 10 hours of music. The ability to assign ringtones and pictures to individual contacts is quite handy, a repeat alarm (unforgiveably missing on N70) is pretty useful too. I don't know why people moan about the keylock, this is mentioned in the manual and similar to Nokia's (* then -) and as soon as you press the * key it put the word "lock" just above the - key. If you want to have a phone that works, be able to take the odd picture, listen to the radio or some mp3's and get woken up weekday mornings then this is pretty good.

Trust me this best phone ever. The 3 speakers on the back are so loud you can have the volume low and its still louder than most phones. Also the phone is so easy to use its the best phone out. On paper it might not be better than the N80 or N91 but both those phones are slow loading and the proccessor is to small you have to wait 2 minutes to open 1 picture and it takes 2 hours to load 1gig onto the N91. So in my opinion the W810i is the best phone and you should get it.

Let's get the downsides of this phone out of the way right at the start: there is no lens cover. That's it. Not a major gripe, I reckon. I am in awe of this phone! The sound quality on this phone is stunning! The MegaBass option just makes it sound even better!! The phone feels great - not too flimsy or plasticky - and has got a great screen for it's size. The camera is excellent, really excellent. Having only had this phone two days, I haven't yet had time to plunder it's depths, but I have not had to refer to the manual once - it's so intuitive: everything is where yoyu expect it and want it to be. If you are thinking of changing your phone and you don't need a SmartPhone or 3G, then this is the best phone on the market!

Opted for this phone after my new contract motorola V3i developped a software fault within three weeks of having it, and I can honestly say I have not looked back!! It does everything it's supposed to do, it's extremely user-friendly, and as a bonus even looks good. Battery life is pretty good, 4-5 days with lots of use, and quick to recharge (approx 2.5 hrs). The walkman player is fab, and holds enough tracks that my mp3 player is now largely redundant. The included ringtones are by and large poor, and unfortunately cannot all be deleted, though this really is a minor point. I can't say whether it's the best phone on the market or not, but it really does seem pretty darned good. *****

This phone has lots of fantastic features but the best thing about it is it works exactly as you want it to, everything is at hand and you are never trying to find the phones features even though it has so many. You can also customise the phone so if it's not exactly as you want it then you can make it that way. This includes changing what feature many of the buttons do, alongside a dedicated shortcut button; which displays a menu to which you can add any feature you want. A very useful feature is that you can store multiple numbers and email addresses under one name. You can also add in when a person's birthday is. The phone also has many other useful features, which whilst not particularly high-tech, are useful. These include Alarm, Calendar, Calculator, Tasks List, Notes Lists, Timer, Stopwatch and finally the light for the camera can be used as unsurprisingly a light! The next particularly useful feature is that the phone syncs with you PC, so you don't have to worry about loosing your number should you loose your phone. However it is not only numbers that are transferred, the functions mentioned previously (calendar, tasks, notes etc) all sync with Outlook as well. The auto-focus camera is brilliant and produces high quality pictures, whilst the screen is large and clear. The walkman aspect of the phone is very good, although you'll probably want to get a 2GB memory stick if you want to fully utilise this feature, however I got one off ebay for £35 incl postage, packaging and insurance. If you get a phone call whilst listening to the walkman the music will automatically pause, if your using the earphones then you can use the built-in microphone (in the cord) to use the phone hands-free. So are there any criticisms of this phone? Well the ring tones could be louder and the fact that there is no lens cover is disappointing.

this is a good phone, it is pretty much the same as the k750i but with a walkman, which is complicated, i like sony ericsson because of the low cost, the size, and the ease of use, sony ericsson and nokia are at a similar stage, both producing good phones with either 2 or 3.2 megapixel cameras. but look at nokia n91, similar features as w810i except that it has 4gig memory, but w810i has memory card which at the moment has up to 2gig cards but they are developing higher memory cards! but the main disadvantage is the size of the n91 it is similar size to old phones from 20 years ago, whereas the w810i is small and comfortable. if you are not sure to get this phone or not, you should do what i am doing and wait for the sony ericsson k800i, from the cyber-shot range with excellent camera features and doenst have walkman so it is simple like the k750i, but with the better sound quality!! so it is better than any other phone out there.

I have owned a W810i for a week. While it is generally an excellent phone I am going to return it due to the poor quality of the Walkman. There is hiss and digital artifacts / distortion. This is particularly noticeable at non-loud volumes (below 50% volume), for quieter music and at the end of most tracks. Amazingly, the problem appears to be a continuation of the problem present in the model it's replacing - the W800i. For more details see: www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=119082

Had this phone for a week whilst deciding to keep it on contract, gave it back but beginning to miss it already. Thing is, the specs on this phone as everyone knows is basically the same as the K750 and that is over a year old now so I couldn't justify starting a new year contract on an already year old specced model. Surely a year on there should have been more improvements apart from cosmetic. I am waiting for Sony's latest generation model due very soon the K800i now this IS a direct upgrade of the K750 and is similar in size with 3.2mp camera (with lens protection!),light, flash and red eye reduction, larger screen (about time) and 3G. My advice is to wait for this one as w810i seems to be Sony stretching out it's current highest selling model another year.

Just replace my trusty 6630 with this fashion icon. Looks-wise it can't be faulted. The screen is a lot smaller than I am used to and the interface is not as clear and easy to use as the symbian operating system. Bit disappointed at the included games though, pretty poor by any standards and one is a demo, really wanted the millionaire game that was on my T630. Walkman is a great idea but I really think the system should be simplified to be a lot more user friendly, it really needs to compete with the ipod for ease of use. I have music and sounds here there and everywhere in folders etc and the volume keeps lowering when I exit and re enter or switch of phone. Hmmmm. I use my ipod regularly though it is the bigger 20 one and 6630 was no featherweight so hoped this phone would combine the strengths of both, not sure yet. They should have kept the lens cover and rid of that nasty rubber cerd slot cover.

Was due an upgrade so went down to my local 02 shop to see what they had in. The W810I had just arrived (that day) So i decided to take alook and play around with it. Now having had the P900 and using the S700i, i was worried about the size of the W810i (being alot smaller) i've always had the slightly bigger phones, but this does seems to be a perfect size. Its not too small to be silly, yet its big enough to enjoy it. The buttons are of a nice size (very good for people with big fingers like me :) The Black and orange effect on the phone is one of the best looking things i have seen in a long time, its adds a certain CLASS to it. The menu is very simple and easy to use, some items have been moved around to inc the walkman, but not hard to find. Ringtones are crap! So i got my old ones bluetoothed over. Only problem being that they are put into the walkman section as music, and so far i have not found a way to move them to another section. VERY annoying when listening to your tunes, and a ring tone plays! I do hope to find away around this tho!! Having said that, im still in love with the phone, the walkman is great, you can hold around 125 songs at 128kb, but drop this down you get alot more, 64 still gives you a good sound, but at 28 it starts to sound a bit tinny. The build quailty is top stuff, feels very stong, and feels great.....even better it looks great. p.s No joystick!!!! thank you SE, they dont work, they are hard to use, the joypad is alot better!! BEST PHONE ON THE MARKET RIGHT NOW!!
