Sony Ericsson W710i Review

Rating:
Date: 22/11/2006
The Sony Ericsson W710i is a stylish and ergonomic top of the range Walkman phone. It is a flip phone and weighs 101g. The phone has been designed with sports in mind with rubber inlays to improve the grip. It also has a motion sensor to measure time, speed and distance when you run and a step counter for walking. These results are stored in your phone so progress can be monitored. The sports kit with this phone contains a sport belt clip, an armband and a stereo portable handsfree headset.
The phone has a very good integrated 2 megapixel camera with 2.5 x digital zoom and a flash for taking pictures in poor lighting. It can also take short video clips.
It has a TFT internal display supporting 262k colours and a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels. This resolution is typical for this price range however phones such as the K800i and the W900i have a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. Having a TFT display means that screen is visible even in bright sunshine.
The W710i has an excellent stereo MP3 player and an FM RDS radio. It is accompanied by a stereo headset which helps produce a great sound. As this phone is specifically designed as a Walkman phone you are able to create playlists. The TrackID™ function lets you get information on songs played on the radio so once a song is recognised the title, album and artist name is sent back to you. The RDS function also brings information from the radio station directly to the phone's display. With 10MB of internal memory and the option to expand this to 512MB with an external memory card, you can store more music and video files on your phone.
The phone has an excellent 72-voice polyphonic sound meaning that 72 notes can be played simultaneously. As well as polyphonic tones, MP3's can also be used as ringtones.
The connectivity for the W710i is excellent giving you the option of Bluetooth, USB, infrared and Fast port. Bluetooth allows you to wirelessly connect your phone to another Bluetooth device up to 10 metres away. Connecting to a PC requires a USB cable.
The phone connects to the internet with EDGE. This has fast data speeds and can give up to three times faster communication rates than GPRS.
The W710i is capable of working in Europe, America and Japan as it operates on a quad-band frequency. The battery life is also really good as it has a standby of 350 hours.

Features of the Sony Ericsson W710i include:

  • Camera: 2 megapixel, Macromedia Flash Lite™, 2, 5 x digital zoom,
  • Video Camera: Video clip, record, streaming, Video DJ™
  • Display: Internal screen 262,144-colour TFT, 76x220 pixel, External screen 4 greyscale STN, 128x128 pixel
  • Music Player: Stereo MP3 player, FM Radio
  • Media Player
  • Java Games: Embedded and downloadable
  • Ringtones: MP3, AAC, 72-voice polyphonic sound
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, Fast port, Infrared, USB
  • Memory: 10 MB internal memory, Memory Stick Micro support
  • Messaging: SMS, MMS, Email
  • Internet: Access NetFront™ Web Browser, Modem, RSS feeds, EDGE, GPRS
  • Talk Time: Up to 10 hours
  • Standby: Up to 350 hours
  • Operating Frequency: Quad-band GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
  • Size: 88 x 48 x 24.5 mm
  • Weight: 101g

Nice phone, but has two very serious drawbacks: 1. Rubber parts wear off quickly. 2. Despite Walkman name it is completely useless as a player because of idiotic Sony jack with plug always falling off. I wish it had a standard 3.5 mm TRS jack!

I've owned so it sony Ericsson W710i. I bought it 2 years ago and I sold it about 6 months ago because I want to buy new handpone that resembling BB. But now, 6 months has gone, and I realized that Sony Ericsson is really the bad hand phone that I have had. The feature is so good and the others. I'm so regret 'cause I sold it. And now, I don't know where to get Sony Ericsson W710i???. It is an old type (launched on 2006). No new product of this phone :((

The rubber comes off after using for 1 year, it's a nightnare, I used super-glue but won't last long, now the rubber falls into bits and pieces. They should have made it plastic, I think it will be better. Also, the charger, earphone cable don't last long, it can become loose after frequent charging and using earphone. This happens in almost on all Sony Ericssion phones.

I had the phone for 3 years and i loved it! I dropped it in the sink. Have thrown it down my stairs several times. I took it in the shower once! I dont think they intended on making it so indestructible, but i found it to be. All its features were fantastic. For the final year of its life the rubber had come off and the camera got clogged up with dust so i couldnt realy use it. But i have a new sony ericsson and its nowhere near as good. x

When it comes to phones, I've always been inclined to Sony Ericsson. I bought this cel phone a while back, and it works great. However, with time it's started giving me problems. The camera is nowhere near 2MP, the pictures come out noisy if taken in poOr lighting. It's constantly turning off by itself, and mind you I have not dropped it that much. For a "sporty" cel phone, it should withstand minor falls. And now, the one problem that pisses me off the most, it has gone completely mute. Even when silent mode is off, the phone won't ring, it only vibrates when I get an incoming call. Overall, I give it a 6 out of 10. It's a nice phone and all, but there are so much better [and cheaper] options out there. When it come to the w710, Sony Ericsson could've done a better job.

I love this phone - I've had it for 2 years now and it's great. The quality of the pictures is fantastic, as is the sound. I'm quite an active person, and I'm encouraged that it will indicate how far I've run/walked as well as the calories I've burnt - all this while listening to music or the radio! My only gripe was that the rubberised edging didn't last very long and fell off after a few months. Nevertheless, I love my phone too much to change it!

When I initially got this phone, I was very impressed. The walkman feature was brilliant, the screen was good and big and it had a really really good pedometer feature which analysed amount of steps. However, after a few months of having the phone, the headphones started to just fall out of the handset whenever it was pluged in. I therefore got a new set of headphones which I thought would solve the problem. But it didn't. So I then sent it off to sonyericsson to get repaired (and they give you freepost which is very good). About three weeks later I receive a letter from sonyericsson (that turned up fully 8 days after the date on the letter)saying that they had found moisture in my phone which means they consider it to be beyond economical repair and sso told me that if I didn't respond to the letter within 28 days they would get rid of the phone (which is pretty poor considering it turned up 8 days late!!!). So I phoned up and they told me that the moisture was fro m sweat from the phone being in my pocket. (They had detected moisture with moisture detectors which are put in the phone as it is made.) I consider this moiisture from sweat business appauling especially considering that the phone is designed to be used by runners and joggers who will naturally produce alot of sweat. I know have to pay them an extra £11.75!!! to get my phone back unrepaired. Now don't get me wrong. THE PHONE IS ABSOLUTLY GREAT; OUTSTANDING, BUT SONY ERICSSONS CUSTOMER SERVICE IS COMPLETE AND UTTER $!£^%* As a warning to anyone with a sony ericsson, if your phone malfunctions, the last thing you want to do is send it to sony ericsson to get repaired!

But I had some problems: - during the long walk the battery's capacity not enough for 8 hours playing music and on you way you have not possibility to charge your mobile - dust going inside external display and it does not look good. I have not figgurate out how to clean it - very low quality of the sound even if I use quality headphones - internal camera makes absolutely terribly pictures - I put 8Gb memory stick inside my mobile, but I belive it cannot accept this size, strange but Sony gurantee acceptance of 32Gb - very strange emulation removebale device during USB connection to my computer (other Sony models have much better interface) - very slow processor, slow external connection, radio doesnot have digital band I hope the next generation Sony mobile will not have those problems and it will be real partner for long-distance walking...

Rubber grip came off within 4 months. 2. two keys "5" and "C" stopped working. 3. comes ot of stand-by mode for no reason. The display goes on and off thru night even when the fone is left untouched on the table. There is no SSMS/ bluetooth message or anything for the display to start off. Due to this battery runs out quicker than what it should. 4. Agree that the phone camera should be used in natural light. But other phones with 2MP resolution definitely give much better results indoors. It definitely does not justify its cost.

I love this phone, it's unique stylish and very good for memory. What I appreciate is that the portable speakers can rock my house. I can't tell when last i used my own stereo at home. Everythings about me and my phone. I am not a material person but I couldn't live without it.
