Sony Ericsson W300i
Product Rating
Sony Ericsson W300i ReviewRating: Date: 15/11/2006 The Sony Ericsson W300i is a small and neat clamshell design weighing 94g. It is an excellent mid-range camera phone with a built in Walkman. The phone has a very basic VGA camera with video. Although this is typical for this price range, there are better available such as the Z610i and the V630i which both have a 2 megapixel camera. It has a Video DJ function allowing you to create video sequences by combining video clips with sound and images. The display is a very bright and clear TFT screen which allows you to see it even in bright sunshine. It has 262k colours and a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels. This phone has an excellent music player supporting MP3 format and a stereo FM radio. As this is specifically a Walkman phone the music player has features such as shuffle, loop and playlist giving you control of what you listen to. The FM radio also features RDS meaning information such as traffic reports and special offers can be displayed on the screen. The W300i has 40-voice polyphonic and MP3 ringtones. The 40-voice polyphony means that 40 notes can be played simultaneously. It also features Music DJ which allows you to create your own polyphonic ringtones. It has 20 MB of internal memory and the option to extend it with an external memory card. This is excellent in comparison with some other phones within this price range. The phone also has excellent connectivity with Bluetooth, USB, infrared and Fast port. Bluetooth and infrared let you wirelessly connect to devices while USB allows you to connect to your PC via a cable. The W300i can connect to the internet with EDGE which provides fast data speeds. EDGE provides the fastest connection speeds available on a non-3G phone. The battery life is one of the best amongst other phones in this price range with up to 400 hours of standby time. This phone will work in Europe, America and Japan as its operating frequency is quad-band. Other features of this phone include a speakerphone allowing you to talk handsfree, a sound recorder and flight mode operation allowing you to continue to listen to your music without interfering with the signals whilst flying. Overall this phone has excellent features and is great value for money. We would recommend this product.

Reviewed by Debs on 01/09/2008 Agree, really great phone for a short time, then BAM!! White Screen of Death hits and everything else starts to fail too. Not at all impressed and I really don't think it is acceptable that large corporates like Sony Ericsson are getting away with issuing phones that are prone to faults due to software failings. Surely this is no longer an acceptable excuse. Money back or product recall please Sony Ericsson. Rating:
Reviewed by Erik on 28/08/2008 A really great phone for the money, until it breaks. I bought my W300i just over a year ago and haven't regretted it a minute, until the screen went dead a month after the warranty expired. To be honest you have to be paitent if you want the camera to be good some of the pictures I took are amazing. I love the walkman which is its main feature. Also, the walkman is brill. Sound quailty is good too. Ive had this phone ages. Ive dropped it so many times. (Im fair clumsy ) Phone has a fair decent memory as well. My bluetooth works very well. And my screen has never broken. I have noticed that when you close the phone, the top flip part does tend to wobble just a tiny bit. But its never broken and nothings gone wrong with it. Never had one problem with it! Ive dropped it in water and it still works. Probably one of the best phones ive ever owned. Definately RECOMMEND. :D Rating:

Reviewed by abi on 01/06/2008 The Sony Ericsson w300i is perfect for you if you only use your phone to play music, as it has a brilliant walkman mp3. I have had a dozen or so cell phones over the years. My big walky talky motorola phone worked better that this phone. The buttons on this thing are hard to push unless you have a long fingernail and I don't want to walk around with a long index fingernail, looks bad, you know? The volume isn't loud enough unless you use the headphones. And why can't sell phone companies use the standard 3.5 mm jacks like mp3 players. I hate to admit it but my ipod works way better than the mp3 player on this thing. Don't buy this phone or you may regret it. Rating:

Reviewed by Karolina on 17/05/2008 I have had this phone for 2 years now and I'm quite satisified with it. The battery life is ok, though I don't speak very much. It lasts approximtely one week. A big drawback is that people whom I talk to have problems hearing me. I have to repeat everything I say and almost scream into the phone and keep the microphone really close to my mouth. Therefore, I usually use the handsfree speaker or the headphones, and interestingly enough, people hear me much better then. Two other drawbacks are the small display and the poor quality of the camera. But since I don't use my phone for taking pictures it's not a problem. The cable is also very handy for transferring music. All in all, I think the phone is well worth the money. Rating:
Reviewed by Frustrated on 14/05/2008 If you are thinking about buying this phone, dont!! I will tell you about the white screen of death, it basically renders the phone useless as it is not possible to see texts, incoming calls, or anything that requires the use of a properly working screen. Its not just a blurry screen it is 100% white, and my phone started this nonsense 2 weeks after the warranty expired, sony you ought to be more responsible for you products and step up your consumer relations by replacing these junk phones. This is a defect that has been responsible for the demise of thousands perhaps millions of your phones worldwide, not only am i wasting my money buying sony products i am also wasting valuable resources that end up causing more problems for this planet. Step your game up Sony, either you start making quality products or you ought to extend your warranties until you can do so!! So frustrated with your greedy and unethical ways, im pissed! Reviewed by Mike on 23/04/2008 I have had this phone for exactly 1 year. I hate it!!! Two major things... First off the friggin buttons! What knothead designed this stupid thing, too close together. The other thing is the flip screen is coming loose, and feels like it is ready to fall off. The final kicker to replace it, was the screen went totally white and the phone is completely useless other than being able to recieve calls. can you say JUNK!!!!! Rating:
Reviewed by Andrew Walter on 22/04/2008 This phone works well for all of a month (funny enough thats when the warranty dies on it too). From then on its twitchy as all hell. I used to have the original razr when it first came out... that was rediculously twitchy. This is worse. I open the phone to answer a call, and yet it still vibrates 2 or 3 more times and the phone doesnt connect until it is done vibrating. With other phones you do have to turn them off and on every few days to refresh your signal to your carrier, this one needs it every day and sometimes TWICE a day! It does hold up well to punishment (day to day wear, nothing kooky). If you download a ringtone or music file onto your computer and then transfer the file to the phone it will not allow you to use the file as a ringtone. It will not use mp3's as ringtones! WTF? Decent battery time when I bought it, now it survives 2 maybe 3 days and it needs to recharge... altho recharge time is quick! Bluetooth works great on this phone, very easy to u se, browser isnt bad. All in all, if you're given a choice, don't go for this phone. Its garbage. Rating:

Reviewed by Well, my mother likes it... on 25/03/2008 In fact she likes it enough that she's gone back to it on purpose from an upgrade k810 she was sent (which I briefly tried out as we're on the same network, and decided to pass on - it was quicker, sleeker and with a better camera than my current n70, but it was missing enough killer features found on both that and my prior k750 to make it a no-go). Apparent pros: just works nicely, simple to use, cute design, clamshell (so fits into handbags and small pockets easily, without compromising on keypad or screen space) which flips open/shut easily (some, like the Razr, are far too stiff), external secondary screen so you can screen calls and control the walkman feature without opening it, pretty good music player (even with the tight 256mb memory stick - she doesn't mind the lack of variety) with the good sense to automatically pause when a call comes in, immediately elevating it above the usefulness of a phone + seperate mp3 player combo. battery life and ringer speaker seem perfectly good also. Cons: low rez camera (though the quality is acceptable), no flash or nightlight, keypad has an odd "overlapping" design which can be difficult to get used to at first (my thoughts), has come preinstalled with all kinds of Robbie Williams nonsense (wouldn't be so bad, but the media player INSISTS on dropping in one of his songs or the live video every few tracks - in fact I ended up here on a hunt for de-branding methods) which would be ok to ignore and occasionally play by choice but is starting to grate badly, its a Sony so your chances of getting a cost-free unlock are slim to none... that's about it really. So ... anyone know how to "kill" mr williams from the firmware? Or at least wing him so he can't forcefully muscle in on the playlists? Rating:

There are even tricks on the internet to help you open it - I mean come on - why did someone not spot it is practically impossible to open? I can see the point in making a phone battery difficult to remove, but this seems a little odd. I am now aware that there are so many problems with this thing I can't wait to ditch it. Reviewed by Brenda on 01/03/2008 Got this phone a year ago. It broke after about four months - the screen flashed white, even after turning it off and removing the battery. The network I bought it from 'repaired' it but it started to break down again in September. A variation on the same problem. Screen blanked/went white. The features still worked - could receive calls and texts, but I didn't have a clue what I was doing because I couldn't see a thing. I thought it was just a one-off glitch but it got worse and worse and I've been using a different phone for the last 2 months. I do not think it's a software thing. The hinge joint is extremely delicate and I was able to induce the screen of death or whatever people are calling it simply by hold the handset horizontal! As a phone, I liked it - liked the menu, display, features etc. Camera's fine. Didn't use the audio because I have an iPod so I can't comment on that. Buttons are tricky but nothing you can't iron out with practice. HOWEVER, a lot of people are complaining about the same fault, and to me that seems to be related to an inherent weakness in the design, namely the hinge joint. On that basis, I would avoid it. It seems destined to break. Rating:
Reviewed by Alisha Edwards on 01/03/2008 I am currently using this phone but i am about to upgrade to the nokia 5300 and frankly I am extremely happy about it. I found that although it was quite a pleasurable phone to have once I had bought a 1 Gb M2 card it was a quite a limited phone with a noticebly poor camera and limited functions. If you looking for not to a fancy phone with simple features i suppose you could say that this is it but like others a found that the phone kept repeatedly freezing and one point my battery went from about 53% to dead and how that's possible i don't know. The keypad was quite easy to use so no problems there and the speaker was very good with quite a strong, clear quality. The actual themes on the W300i were very bland being only 3 quite boring themes that didn't suit the phone much. In addition, i found i was quite bulky, possibly too bulky and at times found it was like having a heavy brick in my pocket. price wise its reasonable but it is enough to put you off SE phones. However, it has the really good game that all walkman phones have, Quadrapop which was a joy to play. Also, there isn't much room for text and the message bank gets full easily. Rating:

Reviewed by tazzy on 19/02/2008 I had this phone for a good while now and still love it as much as I did when I first got it. I have had no problems with it at all. The sound from the MP3 player is great and the earphones make it even better (I personally love the inner ear ones). It's very quick when browsing online due to the EDGE feature, which was spot on for me as I enjoy browsing on my phone. If I had to moan about something, it would be the camera because of it just being a standard VGA one, but it does the job. The video camera came in handy while I was away visiting family and the quality wasn't overly bad. Actually pretty good for a bog standard cam. People say that they have problems with this phone, but it doesn't affect everyone. I think overall, the phone is great and I just hope the next Sony Ericsson I get is like this one. Rating:

Reviewed by Kez on 02/01/2008 I have had this phone for a year now and have found it to be excellent. As mentioned in many other reviews the camera is slightly grainy, not the best quality but if you choose to upload your pictures to a computer they can be touched up using Photoshop or a similar program and they come out really well. I think one of the only problems I have encountered with my phone is the batery life. When I got my phone the initial charge was meant to be about 6 hours and I left it charging for longer than this. However I find that the battery can be rather hit and miss as to whether it lasts for long enough after a charge. It lasts about 2 weeks before needing another charge but this can vary. The memory is also good although a memory card is strongly recommended as the internal memory isn't very big. I personally haven't encountered the "White Screen of Death" or any freezing problems with my handset, but any problems I have had have been sorted out efficiently and quickly wi th Sony Ericcson. All in all an excellent phone, good value for money and good features. Rating:

Lets start on the camera, okay so its vga but its not like we're all photographers!! i like editing my photos, and videos! its holds SO much, thanks to the card it came with. The battery life is excellent, usually lasts me about 1 week, which i think is pretty darn good! the keys are rubbish? HAHA yeah you wish, they are amazing, smooth, DONT CRACK, like w300i! The music player is 10/10! you can get about 40 songs on this phone and the quality is excellent. This phone is now on sale for only £50 it is worth about £90 because it is the only reliable phone these days! Oh yes, the charger NOT BROKEN, ive had the same one for a year, it does stay it , most the time its hard to get out! screen doesnt freeze and the speakers are still as good as new!! i have never had ANY problems, not needed to get repaired or replaced! me and my dad both have this phone, and what are we kids with small fingers? NO, the buttons are perfect!! and really, go cry me a river about the camera! its VGA! what are you expecting 7mp pictures??! It just does what its meant to do! its also a stylish phone "the light up buttons make it look toyish" dont most phones light up? arent you meant to be able to see in the dark?? The games are fun, quadrapop being my favourite! It is also very easy to text on! it is more of a teenager, young adult phone, stylish and modern. So overall, i recommend this phone, mine has been with me everywhere from metallica gigs to the sea in walton to france, bottom of my school bag. and it survived, no other phone has survived with me as long as this one, this really is the perfect phone, i dont think they get better than this stunner! so.. if your teenager wants a new phone, this one is cheap(shouldnt be) and a very fun mobile! Simply the best. Rating:

The phone does far more than i want it to, but luckily I'm just into phones enough to find it useful. There's only 1 thing I'd change about the phone: the buttons are a bit close together and fiddly so when txting often get the wrong buttons. Other than that, mine came with a free headset (which I've seen selling at about £25) and a 256mb card so I can put music on it for the mp3 player. Looks good, works fine, good memory for texts and contacts, good battery life and the radio works really well!apart from the buttons I don't think you'll find a better phone for the price.
