Reviewed by Roywj on 12/01/2008 This is an excellent phone, I was concerned about previous reviews re a poor quality picture when using the camera in the dark but the problem is solved simply by changing the settings to 'twilight portrait'. Please don't be put off by the bad reviews! Rating:

Reviewed by Jeanette Goodman on 11/01/2008 I've had the phone since it was launched in October and must say I am not impressed at all by it. I purposely waited since July for this phone and am so disspointed in it. Mainly the camera, the shutter just sticks so would say it has nothing to do with the flash at all that it gives black pictures it simply doesnt work. Also wouldnt say the volume is very loud either and have to have it on full volume to get a decent sound out of it with or without earphones. Not that I like to have my music deafiningly loud, but would be nice to hear it. Also when scrolling through the contacts it tends to stick and then jump. Havent really gotten into the internet or other things it is supposed to do as really only wanted it for the above. At the moment it is back with 02 being repaired and hope that when I get it meets upto scratch with what it is expected to do. Know most new things have a few teathing hiccups, but come on this is a Sony Ericcson and an expensive item at that, we expect more from them. Rating:

Reviewed by Dan F on 07/01/2008 for everyone that has said it gives you a poor photo inside that is probably because the subject you have focussed on is much brighter than the background so it only lets in enough light to make the subject the right balance to see. you get used to the buttons after a couple of days and your fingers eventually harden to the keys although the edges of them are quite sharp. the motion senser can be very useful at times and this makes the new game which uses it fun aswel. i think this is a great phone and if like myne it went dodgy at the start, replace like i did. and now the one i have is perfect. if theres nothing wrong with it then just keep using it and you will get used to the touch screen buttons and awkward keypad. Reviewed by R Sid on 07/01/2008 Basic functions like calling, texting, switching to loudspeaker & photos are not practical. No need for touch screen as it adds nothing to the usability but in fact takes longer to respond. Again camera functions are not good either. Unfortunately not everything that it was hyped up to be. Reviewed by Lut4Notin on 07/01/2008 This phone is amazing, i dont see why people dont like the camera quality which is execelent when you know how to use it. And all of you who return it after one single day, you just don't have the patience to try to understand what you're complaining about: it takes a while before getting used to the keys for example, but after a week you think they're great! There is nothing negative to say about the K850i, exept that it could have a bigger screen and Wi-Fi. For those who complain about its big size for a phone, you have to remember that its also a camera! So its size is just a point of view...(this is not a good justification for disliking this phone). I shall end this comment by saying that i was extremly satisfied by this wonderfull sony ericsson product. BUY IT! Rating:
Reviewed by Winston on 06/01/2008 I'm bemused by the poor reviews here. I recently swapped by LG Viewty - now there was a glitchy phone - to return to the SE fold with this phone and am delighted. Yes, the flash is in a stupid place but it's not rocket science to move your finger out of the way. The picture quality is good and there's a wealth of other features that make this phone a must. Web browsing is super-fast and the media centre on the phone allows it to compete with the Walkman range. In short, it's got everything I want from a phone and, as always with SE phones, it just works. Rating:
Reviewed by John Twitchen on 05/01/2008 This phone has a bigger screen than all of the previous SE phones (apart from the SE W950i and the SE W960i) which is really good but the camera is nowhere as good as its rivals (the Samsung G600, the Samsung G800, the Nokia N82 and the Nokia N95). It does have a very good keypad but why do SE have to have the navigational keys inside the keypad because that makes it very hard to use at first. overall it is a very good phone so i give it 4-5 for features, 5-5 for looks and 2-5 for usability. Reviewed by Kensington Gore on 03/01/2008 Awful. Just awful. First things first: aesthetics. First impressions, and all that. Through Vodafone my two models (of which, more later), feature a silver and blue trim around the phone, which looks terrible. Why they didn't make it all black is beyond me. The real concerns, however, come from daily use. After two weeks, my first model took it as a command to go back when I pressed the 5 button. Not very helpful when you're writing 'hello' in a text. And then it would connect itself at random to the internet. I had that one replaced after the repair centre couldn't restore it to former glories, and my current one began to switch itself off at random in its infancy. Full blown alzheimers has kicked in, and from yesterday, I can't switch it back on. And this after a month of not-more-than-average use. How I wish I hadn't flogged my w810i. Avoid. Rating:

Reviewed by jamkur on 02/01/2008 I was looking forward to this phone for ages. I was quite pleased with it at first but when i started to show it off to friends at work it became clear there is a problem with the camera. With the flash set on auto, every photo i took indoors the flash would go off but the pictures would come out very dark. I checked all the settings and when i turned the flash off, they would come out fine. This is very strange as you should be able to leave the flash on auto. This phone has since been returned and i will not be getting another one. Very dissapointing from sony ericsson, they should of tested this before they released this phone. Rating:
Reviewed by Rob on 02/01/2008 Had this phone for about a month, whilst the keyboard layout is different, I have now gotten used to it, some people who have seen my phone actually do like this new type of layout. As for taking pictures, you really do need to get the settings right, it may take some time but you will get to know what settings to use and when, this phone appears to have a more sophisticated camera setup than the K800i I had before, persevere and you will be happy with this phone. There is no fault with the flash, I have written to SE who say they are unaware of any fault. Rating:
Reviewed by gaz on 02/01/2008 Guys - this phone is great. Apparently there was a problem with the flash not synchronising with the camera - which led to dark photos. A firmware release has solved the problem. Also - make sure you dont put your finger over the light sensor - if you do - you'll get a dark photo. Photos are beautifully detailed - phone is everything you've come to expect from SE - straightforward. Keypad is also fine - takes minutes to get used to it. Ignore the negative reviews below - they were probably using pre firmware upgrade phones. Rating:
Reviewed by Paul on 02/01/2008 Got my phone today, it's going back tomorrow. I had a K800i for over a year and love it, but the keypad on this thing sucks. It also feels lumpy, the ridge like edges make it feel like a brick and it loses some of the sleek lines of the K800i. I don't care about the camera, i've got one of those anyway. I'm swapping this for a W880i Rating:

Reviewed by Dappa on 31/12/2007 Now, normally i'd consider myself a hardcore fan of the sony ericsson family but this phone......... all I can say is if you have had a cybershot k800i or k810i avoid this like the plague. Its like they said "great we've got a 5 mega pixel camera but lets take away all the things that made the last 2 phones great" for example video editing and the simple things like being able to store different vids in different files and whats the deal with the camera????? why are the pics so damn dark???? and that keypad???? don't even go there. Personally I think sony needs to seriously sitdown and think our K800i is our top phone lets try and better and go forward not back. Rating:

Reviewed by Jens Meurer on 27/12/2007 A camera phone that isn't! Upgrading from a SE W800i - which had a great, intuitive, easy-to-use-with-one-hand fool-proof camera that took really rather good pictures - this is a huge disappointment. Snapshots are no longer possible. In less than perfect light your pictures will turn out dark. In better light they seem pale and often blurred. Maybe it's all my fault - but I wanted a useable camera-phone with great snapshot potential. To make matters worse, the functions have also diminished: For example, one can no longer pick and choose from the photos collected. Grrr... And the torch - again, this was great on the W800i - is piddly. What has gotten into Sony? Can they tell us if there will be a firmware upgrade? JM Rating:
Reviewed by Dave on 26/12/2007 Like most people I hate the keypad! I wanted the W850i but by the time i got round to doing something about an upgrade from my Samsung D500 i was too late and it had been passed over from contract options. So, in my infinite wisdom and heeding the ravings of sony about their new product, I went along with it - this was six weeks ago. At first all was well, but soon things started going pear shaped. The 'wonderful' camera has a lens cover which is... covered! So when it decided it didn't want to open anymore, I could no longer use the camera as i couldn't manually retract the cover! I was all set to send it back when... behold! It worked again! Great, back in business. Hang on? what's this? now the phone won't allow me to access any text message folders and I can't send or receive texts! No amount of switching off and on and removing batteries or resetting has solved this new issue. For a Sony Ericsson product virgin this phone has left a bad taste in my mouth (and a sore thumb!). And to think people berrated the Samsung D500 - possibly the most reliable and robust phone I have owned....looks like it's gonna need dusting off and recharging! Rating:

Reviewed by Chris from Clapham on 22/12/2007 I agree with LI from Wales. It does take time to get used to and the keypad isn't the best but once you get the hang of it it's not so bad. luckily i haven't had to part with my favourite old ericsson. You have to be patient with this phone and get the right settings, let it focus and adjust. It's not therefore any good for spontaneous photography but for more pensive and posed shots and landscapes it takes some beating. If you want to go on a night out and get shots of your friends in a dark bar, take your phone to call them but remember this is a phone first and a camera second - so take your camera with you. I actually like this phone. It's a move in the right direction. I have a friend with a Nokia N95 and he hates it. No doubt ericsson will bring out another model of this..perhaps a slidey one or a clamshell which i love. Rating:

Reviewed by riderx on 06/12/2007 Whatever the people who think they have figured out how to use the camera say, I still feel it is a fundamentally very bad camera/flash Xenon or no if they cannot get the camera to coordinate when to flash when the shutter opens then it is a bad camera, 5 MP or no. It is a lottery whether or not a photo will come out all black. Sony Ericsson phones (this is my fourth) always have a problem with dust getting into the phone and onto the screen or other parts. My K850i has some dust under the lens on the camera (not just the lens cover). This presumably came from the speaker next to it where dust gathers. I will have to take it in to have it cleaned. I also hate the small keys of the key pad that make it hard to text. My previous phone - Moto SLVR had a well-designed key pad. Also, the touch keys are irritating when once moves the phone to ones ear to answer a call, the proximity of the face makes the phone think you are trying to switch the sound to speakerphone, bluetooth, etc. Very irritating. Other than these 3 major issues, the K850i is a good phone as a phone (which is what it does best). Not tried the 3G internet but WAP internet works quite well. Rating:
Reviewed by james on 29/11/2007 I admit, there a few bugs, but they should be done away with with the immanent firmware update so for just now I'll struggle on with having to focus the camera before taking a picture (strange thing to do, I know!) and resetting the equaliser each time I want slightly better sound. What a lovely looking phone though! I think I read somewhere that the touch sensitive BUTTONS (not screen) are sensitive to heat, I could be wrong but, if you have bad circulation that might explain having to press it a few times =) personally speaking I think they're great, and when I go to use an old phone now I have to remind myself not to jab at the bottom of the screen. I really don't see what all the fuss about the buttons is (not necessarily on this site), I text reasonably fast and have been able to do so faster with these well-defined ones, and no, they're not uncomfortable. Rating:
Reviewed by james on 29/11/2007 To stop making calls/ sending texts during a call press the on/off button on the top of the phone and put it on key lock - yes its a bit convoluted but it does the job. Rating:
Reviewed by Wayne on 27/11/2007 Well i have had my K850i for over a month now and at first i was a bit let down with the camera issues and the odd keypad design! Since then i have now upgraded the firmware and i love the phone! The camera no longer takes dark pics and all in all way better than my k800i! What isnt mentioned above is the music player can play wma files perfectly and they can also be used ringtones so thats a bonus for me!! The keypad is ok once you get used to it although the touch sensetive buttons are ok, but if they become problematic then the phone is pretty much usless which has happend to me before! I would say get this phone even more so now that Sony Ercisson have released a new firmware for the phone that fixes those really irritating issues!! All in all its a stunning phone that combines the best of cybershot and walkman phones all in one so whats not to like?! Rating:
Reviewed by Richard on 21/11/2007 I've had the phone for about 3 weeks now and i am dissapointed with it. It does everything my brilliant K800i did, but not as good. The touch buttons only work sometimes after repeated pressing, and when i make a call i find my ear starts to operate them, sending blank text messages to the 1st entry in the phone book- (I have yet to figure out how to make a call with the keypad locked). Even though the camera is 5mp the photographs are sometimes dark, they never were on the k800i. Also the colours are not true, i took a pic of a red van and it turned out a pinky colour. The photos on the k800i have numbers like "jpg456" for instance, so when you send them to the computer you know which ones to ask for... Not with the k850i, you have to faff about sending them all until you get the right one(actually the photos still do have numbers but the phone wont let you see them!). The battery doesn't seem to last as long, when it gets to about half charged it goes flat very soon, it lasts about 2 days with moderate use.. Guess what, the k800i lasted about 3 days. All in all it's an ok phone and if i'm honest i have to say i've been spoilt by my k800i, which my girlfriend is now the proud owner. If you want the latest flash looking phone then maybe it's for you (You will need to put an entry something like "AAdummy" into your phone book to receive the texts from your ear lobe though) Rating:
Reviewed by Peter Jones on 18/11/2007 For taking pictures it is no better than my old Motorola, which is only 2mb. As it only has digital zoom, the pictures are terrible if you try to zoom in, worse than any other camera I have used. The buttons are very small and become tiresome after a bit. The battery lasts a long time without a charge and the music side of it is OKish - it doesn't sound as good as a i-pod. Unless you can get a really good deal I wouldn't buy this - I'm sending mine back and going for a Nokia N95. Everyone says it looks ugly and looks like a brick. Rating:
Reviewed by Virus on 04/11/2007 I recieved the K850i as a direct upgrade to my K800i which is getting on a bit. Sony have come up trumps. Almost. The K850 takes the best bits from the walkman range and the best bits from the K800 so now you have MegaBass in music player, a led light as well as a xenon flash (great for torch), the lens cover problem has been sorted, so what's negative? For one the colours are great but seem a bit 'lively' and not as natural as the K800, the screen is indeed bigger but the resolution remains the same so it does not look as sharp as the K800, the shiny surfaces attract fingerprints to an annoying degree and the space between buutons makes it hard to wipe clean, the phone tends to creak more and does not feel as solid as the K800 and finally that button arrangement replacing the joystick, makes one handed use near impossible and your thumb takes a pounding after a while. So in short great features and some great improvements but not all there yet. Rating:
Reviewed by Vosblod on 27/10/2007 Had the phone about ten days now - upgraded from a K800i. Before I review it I should mention I have one niggle which I will leave till the end as it is so minor; I got into Sony as opposed to Nokia via my girlfriend as I love the software. I bought this phone purely as I loved the K800 and wanted to ditch my digital camera - and I have not been disappointed - 5 megapixels and always on hand so bye bye camera. My worry was I'd lose my favourite little extra's, the 'light on for one minute' and 'record' via a quick shortcut - they don't tell you if it's still there in the promotional stuff - and lo and behold there it is. Plus you get 5 alarms instead of two... My old phone plus some. Get a 4 gigabyte memory card for £30 and you have a brilliant phone/camera/MP3 player. So I would say BUY this phone. Finally, my only little niggle (hence my lower design rating) - the new keypad round the number thing. You will have to learn the skill of not pressing the middle touchscreen key when you select the up button. It is tricky but I got used to it... I guess it is worth it for a bigger screen but it takes practice, or maybe my thumb is to big? Rating:

I have contacted 02 and they said due to it being a brand new phone they dont have an answer for me! I have contacted Sony Ericson and they too dont have an answer for me, they took my details and i am still awaiting a phone call, in my eyes it is obviously faulty, as there is nowhere in the phone manual or on the phone which allows you to change any setting of the lights or even mentions the lights, also the camera sometimes when you take a picture just takes a black image, wierd!
