Sony Ericsson K800i
Product Rating
Sony Ericsson K800i ReviewRating: Date: 11/12/2006 The Sony Ericsson K800i is a top of the range 3G camera phone. It is slightly on the heavy side weighing 115g although for a 3G phone this is not too bad. It is a candy bar design and comes in a black finish or in limited edition silver. It looks quite smart although some say that it is quite large and a bit brick like. The phone comes equipped with one of the best cameras around at the moment with a whopping 3.2 megapixels and 16 x digital zoom. It has a xenon flash that emits a burst of high intensity light for shooting pictures in low light conditions. The auto-focus feature means the camera automatically focuses on the subject in the focus area in the centre of the screen rather then using a fixed focus point.
It also comes with BestPic™ which is a feature that captures nine images in one second with one press of the camera; it captures four shots immediately before the camera key is pressed to complete the shot and four instantly after so you can choose the best picture. The image stabiliser function compensates for small movements of the hand helping to reduce blurry images. The phone is capable of video recording which also has a stabiliser function to reduce blurriness in the recording. It has video editing software, VideoDJ, which enables you to mix sounds, video clips, pictures and text that you are then able to send as a message. Its second camera is used for video calling. The only gripe about the camera is that some people have found the camera cover to be a nuisance as it slides off easily. The K800i also has an impressive display being amongst the highest quality in comparison with other top of the range phones. It has 262k colours and a resolution of 240 x 320. The screen is a large TFT display which means that it is visible even in bright sunshine. The phone has a good media and music player supporting MP3 and AAC formats as well as an FM Radio with a stereo output through the headphones. The radio has a search function and RDS which gives you digital text feeds of information transmitted by radio stations. The K800i also has a direct link to the PlayNow™ so music can be downloaded straight to your phone. The phone supports a superb 72-voice polyphonic sound so 72 notes can be played simultaneously, it can also use MP3's as ringtones. The Melody composer/MIDI (MusicDJ™) is a feature that allows you to create your own ringtones by combining sample music from the drum, guitar, keyboard, bass and brass tools. Memory is expandable with a Memory Stick Micro card giving you 1 GB as well as internal memory (64MB), to store your images, audio and video files on. This phone has a good range of connectivity with Bluetooth, USB, infrared and Fast port. With Bluetooth and infrared you can connect wirelessly to another device of the same capabilities, and with USB you can connect to a PC via a cable. The Fast port connection is an advanced system connector for connecting a charger, portable handsfree, cable or other accessory. With this being a 3G phone, the connection speeds to the internet are like broadband standards which is the fastest speed around for mobiles at the moment. UMTS is a technology that is capable of a 384 kbps data transfer. Battery life is very good for a 3G phone with up to 350 hours of standby time. It is run on a tri-band operating frequency which means that it will work in Europe and America but not Japan. In conclusion, this is a great 3G phone with some very good features. The music player is good although it's not specifically a walkman phone so it isn't as impressive as the W900i, however the K800i compensates for the music player by having such a fantastic camera. It is an all round good quality phone and we would recommend it.

Reviewed by Clare on 09/06/2007 My 1st k800i handset, went faulty within a month. Not ringing when I got a call, switching it's self off, mp3 player freezing, internet crashing, not exiting the web (Which cost a bomb). T-mobile replaced my handset and refunded some of my internet charges. Still on my 2nd handset, which also has many faults. Not ringing when I get a call, switching it's self off, internet crashing, mp3 player sometimes refuses to play tracks which have worked previously. I am seriously disappointed with this phone. I am very pleased with the phone and all those people who are unsatisfied obviously havn't got much knowledge about phones. I am disgusted by the fact it has been called a "brick" because that is totally untrue. I recommend this phone to all those people thinking of buying it! It is also a well built and strong phone as i have dropped it many times and everything still works perfectly fine! Rating:

I cant fault it really, i've had no real problems with it whatsoever. And the best thing is it's black!! Yes it's a little heavy and slightly big but I don't find it as a problem. The only thing lack for me is the console speaker is not stereo... if only it does. Overall, two thumbs up for Sony Ericsson for creating this phone. Can't wait to see the K850 on the market next year! Rating:

It's simple to use..Kinda but the camera is really good! but not so good about the video but still great. Not that much memory tho but you can buy a memory stick so thats cool. It looks great little bit chunky but oh well. Video call is rather good tho. I have to charge it up every night because I use it so much so the battery wont last long. It was easy to install all the stuff onto the computer. Vodafone the setting bit thing isnt working now so thats annoyingg! Viabration isn't very strong tho, plus tha radio signal is quite weak. Reviewed by Stu on 24/05/2007 What a load of rubbish. This phone is nothing but a nuisance. I am on my 3rd K800i in 8 months. The phone spends most of its time being repaired. First it was a software error, second a battery error now it is a phone problem. Camera is good but that is probably about it. I have always had Samsung phones and can't wait till my contract is up so I can launch this oversized piece of junk in the bin. I recommend that you forget about this phone as all it will do is cause problems. The lens cover on the phone is also very poor. It will open in your pocket and take multiple pics of nothing. Great design. Just remember a camera is not everything. Don’t forget a phones main purpose is for communication purposes. AVOID THIS PHONE! You have been warned. Rating:

It gets sent away for repair, I get it back and the same fault happens again. Rubbish. I have had 4 of these phones in the last 9 months. Sony customer service is terrible. They asked me to e mail them with my complaint and they will get back to me in 3 days. It has been a week now and no reply. I also find it hilarious that the Sony Ericsson website says that they cannot guarantee a response in English. Hilarious. They can read in English but can't reply in it. Do not even consider purchasing this phone. Trust me when the phone gets sent away for repair for 2 weeks at a time you get a loan phone that looks like it was purchased from Fisher Price. Rating – phone minus 5 out of 100 Customer Service – minus 5 out of 100 Those ratings are generous as well Rating:

Reviewed by Jim Bob on 22/05/2007 So far so good. It's a stylish phone for a guy. Honestly, I find it hard to imagine a girl wielding this phone. Not because of it's bulk, but because of its masculine design - sharp edged, black and intense. The new k810i however caters for both sexes in terms of style. Anyhow, this is by far the best phone I've used ever. Period. It beats my old man's Nokia N73 in terms of stability, reliability, style and smooth functioning. Complaints based on the phone's size, sliding camera cover all seem unfounded to me. Perhaps it's just the newer batch, but my slider clicks in and seem not to want to come off easily at all. Perhaps over time this will wear down. Hopefully not. Overall - this is a great phone. I've owned it for about 3 weeks now, and it's not made a single hick up. I've been messing around with the aesthetics a lot, and the theme creator you can download from Sony Ericsson's is highly customizable. This phone can be personalized more than any other phone I know to date. Only problem thus far is that the software bundled does not support the new Vista OS. Although with some reading of forums and googling, I was able to make it work. Now the phone works perfectly. I'll have to mention a single down fall though - transfer via USB seems comparatively slow to other USB2 devices. I'm not sure if this phone is USB2, perhaps it isn't. If so, I am disappointed. With a 2gb memory card, this could be a major pain in the ass when copying hundreds of photos. Would be nice if phone was bundled with an external memory card. Overall, very impressed. Outstanding phone. Rating:
Reviewed by Mark Wood on 21/05/2007 I am on my 2nd K800i and again I have the same fault with it, the phone menus start to slow down then the phone turns off and loads back up it says setting theam? the theam is then changed to blue so I reset my theam then every time I try to use the games or the applications I get "Operation failed". When I called Sony Ericsson Uk the 1st time for help, their customer service is shocking they just don't care but my network o2 helped and I got a new handset from them then again same falt? Has this happend to anyone else? This is a top phone when its working but their seems to be lots of software faults on it (Sony Ericsson have removed the flash download link for this handset Hmm I wonder why?) Reviewed by John Daly on 21/05/2007 This phone is as bad as its predecessor the k750i which had to be replaced three times before the guarantee ran out. I've had my k800 five months and it will not connect to the network. Result : I can not make or receive calls. The camera lens cover does not lock shut which means that it opens easily and activates the camera running down the battery and exposes the dirt. After four useless phones in less than 2 years I would not recommend any Sony Ericsson phone. Rating:

I went back to Nokia but found their interface and battery life poor. When I was offered a K800i as an upgrade I took it and what amazes me is the quality of the camera. I use it almost every weekend and take pictures both indoors and out, and to me this phone comes into its own when taking pictures indoors at night. I don't even use a digital camera nowadays. I've been tempted by the new K810i but I don't like the buttons on it so I'll stick with this one until the next one comes out. Reviewed by KevW on 12/05/2007 The k800i reminds me of the w800i I had before it, it's very very hard to fault it. In fact the only reason I swapped in my w800i was cos I was bored of it, i couldn't think of one specific thing wrong with it. It does everything you want it to do, and it does it all brilliantly. It's the complete package. Only things that let it down are it's weight/size and the way it photo's are viewed (when looking at the camera album it takes several seconds for the pictures to focus, they don't even focus on the photodj app). The phone is definitely the best thing on the market, no other phone comes close to the camera and the functionality of it is excellent. Rating:
Reviewed by Dan T on 11/05/2007 I wanted this phone for ages and now i finally have it (company phone) and wish i didn't! The 'soft key' buttons are far too close together causeing me to connect to google very often, the camera lens opens as if by magic when it is in my pocket and the call quality is appalling! I live in the middle of a large city and reception on all networks is spot on. However when using this phone to call customers from home it is quite unproffesional when you end up having to hang up because you can't understand a word they are saying due to the bad distortion. It also happens that i cant make calls at some times as it comes up with 'user busy'. I try the number time after time without success. I know it's the phone because the number would normally go to answerphone if it is busy. All in all Sony Ericssons K800i is a fantastic camera but they didnt get the key element.. PHONE right at all. Reviewed by Alex (UK) on 05/05/2007 I have had this phone for 2 days and am very dissapointed with it. My reasons: 1) Very slow - it takes about 5 secons for the phone to realise that you want it to do something. 2)Camera lens - It opens itself all the time and activates the camera, even when locked, and it makes the phone bulky, it also makes the phone on a tilt instead of straight on a flat surface. 3)Keys - the joystick is admittedly good. But the number keys are not. I text alot and my hand aches when i text on this phone. The keys are all squashed up. I have rated it a 2, because the camera quality is good. The phone does look very stylish, but in reality as soon as you start to use it you can see what a poor product it is. I switched to the k800i after using a nokia 6680 for a year which had a habbit of going mad and having a mind of its own, which the Sony doesn't do, much faster at responding than the Nokias and much better bild quality, the camera is amazing too and the screen resolution is amazing, especially when viewing pictures or surfing the net! I used to swear by Nokias but i no strongly beleive that Sony Ericssons are the new nokias! Rating:
Reviewed by Joe on 04/05/2007 I have a K800i and it is the most reliable phone i have had yet. The camera is absolutely fantastic and it is crammed full of features. Although it is quite heavy, i love the styling of it and i think that it is the best phone on the market at this time. It is simple to use to. One problem i have with it, which i have had with a Sony Ericsson Walkman before, is that when you select a song form the "Tracks" section on the music player, the phone switches itself off which can prove highly annoying at times. Reviewed by Jen on 24/04/2007 Had the phone about 7 months. At first I thought it was a good phone as it had many more features than my old very basic phone. My problems are: Lens cover opens and wears down battery. Rocker control has ceased to funtion effectively so that basic choices are selected corectly in an hit and miss fashion. The coating on the keys has delaminated giving the phone a srcuffy look. The radio can not be played without headphones. The volume control is inadequate and at top volume it is still quite. It freezes regulalry when using specific applications (mainly the internet). It has recently started completely freezing and I can not switch it off (I have to take the battery out) and then it only comes up with the SE logo and no network menu. Recently this happened and my phone only came back to life when a scheduled alarm rang and then miraculously my network screen also came back. BUT all my settings were gone and ALL my saved SMS's. Reviewed by lena on 24/04/2007 i have had many phones in the past motorola, nokia, samsung,LG and now the sony ericsson k800i and this is by far the best phone i have ever owned. lets start with the basics it has, camera, MP3 player, bluetooth, games, internet and video calling. these all sound pretty normal (in range) for a newer model mobile phone, but this has the best camera on a mobile around at this moment in time! no more red eye and gives you a perfect picture every time. you can edit videos and pics, add things to then delete things from them, add music etc... this is more of a toy than a phone and i would recommend this to anyone who loves mobiles, not just for the phone but for the fun! Reviewed by ENM on 21/04/2007 I got the cybershot and was happy with it for a couple of months. It then started giving me problems. From time to time, when I'm receiving calls, the phone will not answer when I press the answer button. The ring tone will stop but the screen will continue saying 'incoming call'. It also froze today while I was looking in the photo gallery. The only way the rectify this problem was to remove the battery and restart it. Very disappointing! Rating:
Reviewed by al on 21/04/2007 this phone is the best i've ever had up to know the only problem is with it is the camera lens cover always opening in me pocket why did sony ericsson not realise this would happen. other than that excellent in every way Rating:
Reviewed by Peter E - From South Africa on 20/04/2007 After owning no less than 5 Nokia phones previously (From the "Big Brick" 1611 to the 6230i) over the last 12 years, I decided to change to the K800i upon my son's recommendation. So far I am finding new features on an almost daily basis. PLUS:- The camera!!WOW! MINUS:- The lens cover that slides open when the phone is in one's pocket thus running the battery down. This problem was solved when I purchased a cheap phone pouch which now holds the lens cover in place. Rating:
Reviewed by Simon Daisy on 20/04/2007 I am not a techie, so I just wanted good phone, which was also an okay camera, to capture cute kiddy moments. It's been great for that. The stills are as good as the digital cameras of a couple of years ago and have enough pixels for quality prints. The video's not so great: very small and pixelated. The phone looks good (if large) and has a good battery life. My only criticisms are: camera cover slides open when the phone is in your pocket, which wastes battery, as it activates the camera. Also my "3 mobile" version only has the most dire "themes" which are so dark that it's almost impossible to text outdoors. I was forced to use "golden light" which I don't like either, but is the only one that's even vaguely bright. Yeah, and for phones with no screen protection, please can they invent a tougher glass so that they don't get scratched. Otherwise, very happy. Rating:
Reviewed by dominic on 18/04/2007 got this phone yesterday after being a 5 year fan of nokia (mainly because of coded key pad lock and excellent video quality) and im dissapointed with the k800i the joystick will not select left on the menu untill after about 10 seconds or more early signs of a fault maybe?. Now for the SO CALLED 3.poo megapixal camera I will accept the image quality is excellent but in video mode its like looking at an old nokia 6230 and the light that was offered on most other sony ericssons is not on this you only get a flash. mp3 player was not used due to no memory card being supplyed with the phone (only 64mb internal memory) but sony usually deliver well in this area. Why dont sony offer a security coded key lock for the pay monthly market. sorry sony but this phone was back in its box to be returned already by last night it has the looks and features to be great but sadly "does not walk the walk" Rating:
