Sony Ericsson K800i ReviewRating: Date: 11/12/2006 The Sony Ericsson K800i is a top of the range 3G camera phone. It is slightly on the heavy side weighing 115g although for a 3G phone this is not too bad. It is a candy bar design and comes in a black finish or in limited edition silver. It looks quite smart although some say that it is quite large and a bit brick like. The phone comes equipped with one of the best cameras around at the moment with a whopping 3.2 megapixels and 16 x digital zoom. It has a xenon flash that emits a burst of high intensity light for shooting pictures in low light conditions. The auto-focus feature means the camera automatically focuses on the subject in the focus area in the centre of the screen rather then using a fixed focus point.
It also comes with BestPic™ which is a feature that captures nine images in one second with one press of the camera; it captures four shots immediately before the camera key is pressed to complete the shot and four instantly after so you can choose the best picture. The image stabiliser function compensates for small movements of the hand helping to reduce blurry images. The phone is capable of video recording which also has a stabiliser function to reduce blurriness in the recording. It has video editing software, VideoDJ, which enables you to mix sounds, video clips, pictures and text that you are then able to send as a message. Its second camera is used for video calling. The only gripe about the camera is that some people have found the camera cover to be a nuisance as it slides off easily. The K800i also has an impressive display being amongst the highest quality in comparison with other top of the range phones. It has 262k colours and a resolution of 240 x 320. The screen is a large TFT display which means that it is visible even in bright sunshine. The phone has a good media and music player supporting MP3 and AAC formats as well as an FM Radio with a stereo output through the headphones. The radio has a search function and RDS which gives you digital text feeds of information transmitted by radio stations. The K800i also has a direct link to the PlayNow™ so music can be downloaded straight to your phone. The phone supports a superb 72-voice polyphonic sound so 72 notes can be played simultaneously, it can also use MP3's as ringtones. The Melody composer/MIDI (MusicDJ™) is a feature that allows you to create your own ringtones by combining sample music from the drum, guitar, keyboard, bass and brass tools. Memory is expandable with a Memory Stick Micro card giving you 1 GB as well as internal memory (64MB), to store your images, audio and video files on. This phone has a good range of connectivity with Bluetooth, USB, infrared and Fast port. With Bluetooth and infrared you can connect wirelessly to another device of the same capabilities, and with USB you can connect to a PC via a cable. The Fast port connection is an advanced system connector for connecting a charger, portable handsfree, cable or other accessory. With this being a 3G phone, the connection speeds to the internet are like broadband standards which is the fastest speed around for mobiles at the moment. UMTS is a technology that is capable of a 384 kbps data transfer. Battery life is very good for a 3G phone with up to 350 hours of standby time. It is run on a tri-band operating frequency which means that it will work in Europe and America but not Japan. In conclusion, this is a great 3G phone with some very good features. The music player is good although it's not specifically a walkman phone so it isn't as impressive as the W900i, however the K800i compensates for the music player by having such a fantastic camera. It is an all round good quality phone and we would recommend it.

Reviewed by Lazer on 09/12/2006 I bought this phone after using some of the leading mobile phones in the market today. these included the nokia n73 and samsung d900. This phone is just amazing. I believe it beats both the phones above in the departments of camera, mp3 player, ring tone sound quality and user friendliness. Dont hesitate to buy this phone. Try to purchase a sim free mobile since these phones cannot be unlocked. Also the network software might slow the phone. But as it is, it is the best phone i've used since the k750i. Rating:

Reviewed by Sean McQuade on 03/12/2006 Got this as an upgrade from the K750i. First impressions; nothings really changed. They've upped the camera from 2MP to 3MP but I find that the camera isn't as good as the K750i. The picture quality is superior; but only when they come out correctly. I took around 40 pictures at a party recently with auto focus and around half of them came out blurred and every single picture came out with red eye. I never once had a blurred picture with the K750i. The lens cover on the camera is very flimsly, slides off very easily in your pocket and I've had a few pictures of the inside of my pocket. They've also removed the light which I found to be one of the handiest things on my K750i. You just hit the shortcut menu and turn on the light. Not sure why they got rid of this as I used it all the time. The screen size has been increased and the screen seems to be much clearer than the K750i and renders images beautifully. Sound quality is good, video player is good, media player is decent. Everything is pretty much how it was. As a new phone, I would recommend this. If you're upgrading from another Sony Ericsson phone, I wouldn't bother. I gave the K750i a 5 star. The camera seems to be poorer and they've removed my favourite feature but kept everything else the same so 4 stars Rating:
Reviewed by Lorraine on 01/12/2006 This phone is Fab !! I have had various phones (E900, V3x, Z610i) since my D750i and none of them have lived up to expectation. Love the camera - surpasses any other phone camera I've come across by miles. Love the organiser / text messaging and of course warping the pics is good fun. I do concede that it is slightly bulky (but as I have the brown version I still think it looks great) and battery life could be a wee bit better. Overall though top class Rating:
Reviewed by niz on 29/11/2006 rubbish!!! Rating:
Reviewed by DW Roberts on 27/11/2006 Having spent a lot of time in high street shops, trying to choose a good 'phone with (1) a decent camera (2) radio, I had decided on the SE K800i. I am extremely happy with the new 'phone. I was initially a little worried that it seemed quite bulky, and especially that the little door over the camera lens would constantly slide off. I am glad to report no such problems. The interface is very simple, the screen is excellent and I am pleasantly surprised by battery life (for such a powerful little mobile). I would advise anyone who is 90% sure about this 'phone to go for it, because my experience of owning and using the handset dispels any doubts that I had about going for another model. There are smaller and lighter 'phones (such as the Samsung D900), but ultimately this Sony Ericsson is a nice balance of size and capability. 5 stars. Rating:

Reviewed by faraaz- Mombasa, Kenya on 25/11/2006 this fone is AMAZING!! got the brown one and it looks great.. its great looks however are exceeded only by its great functionality.. the camera is awesome and with this fone there is no need to buyin digital camera..the music player is quite good (contrary to popular beleif) and can satisfy everyone who is not such a music buff. there are a couple of good games too however there are a couple of downsides..the PC suite is soo difficult to install and it took me ages though i finally got it done.. the camera lens may sometimes slide off but not that often...sadly it doesn't come with a mem. card. all in all i feel sony have done a great job.. they have combined great specs, looks and functions all in one.. for me, this is the beginning of a long relationship wit sony ericsson.. no doubt an OUTSTANDING PHONE!!! Reviewed by Clare on 22/10/2006 I've had this phone for 3 days? Is that all? Feels like ages! Before this I had the SE w800i so not that much of a jump to this, but I do like all the new features, such as the 3.2mp camera with auto flash (I always used to forget to put the light on when taking photos with the w800i, not very spontaneous). The RSS Reader is cool, all the latest headlines as often as you want them. Being able to set up to 5 different alarms, all with different recurrencies, great if like me you work different shift patterns each week! The lens cover is awkward compared to the w800i but not a dealbreaker! The Activity Menu button I wish was in a different place as I keep pressing it when trying to delete text and I have quite slim fingers so no idea how someone with chunkier hands would get on. The screen looks bright and crisp, even on the lowest screen brightness setting. The predictive text now has a new feature- predictive words. It looks at what word you are writing and predicts what your next word will be, based on what you've written before. It hasn't been right yet so far though, I suppose it would be useful for when you are writing something that you write a lot ie "going to be late" or "just set off" etc, which I say a lot! All in all a great phone with great features, highly reccomended!! Rating:

Reviewed by Moff on 10/10/2006 Hands down the best phone i have had. I have previously owned the k750i, p900 and a good few other Sony Ericssons and more recently a Nokia 6280, incidentally the worst phone i have ever had. Due to this i know of Sony Ericssons quality and this is no let down. Picture quality is great and the music player sounds great too, how i managed without its easy menus on my nokia i dont know! Reviewed by hoppy from kdy fife scotland on 05/10/2006 I have owned T68i, t610, t630, k750i, and now the k800i. This phone is the only one ive ever had problems with. First of all it started crashing when online checking email, then it started randomly locking up, or taking away options, eg you could send a picture message but not a txt message. Finally it decided just to die properly..so i went back to my O2 shop with it. Luckily for me it was only 2 weeks old so i got a replacement. While i was ther i noticed that previously the guy in the shop had had a k800i too, now he was wearing a nokia round his neck. I asked him where his k800i was, and guess what? His phone had failed for the same problem!!!! Hope this isnt going to be a problem in future!!!
Somebody already pointed out that they thought that the camera cover should have been left the same as the k750i and i have to say that i agree. Rating:
Reviewed by Rampant Rabbiter on 28/09/2006 This phone is incredible. And I've had it for almost three months now, so this isn't one of those really impulsive reviews when everyone loves their new phone...and then realises a few weeks later that it's not so great. I am a complete phone fanatic, I have to admit. I have 2 contracts, therefore I always have 2 phones. My secondary phone gets changed at least once a month as it is my opportunity to try out almost every phone on the market! But since the release of the SE K700i, I have been completely smitten with SE. The only phone I was disappointed in was the W900i...aside from that, I cannot fault them. I have previously owned the K750i, W800i, W810i...and now this baby. It has to be the best phone on the market. I even had the Nokia N73 for a few weeks as my secondary phone...it just cannot compare, despite the same 3mp camera and the fancy Carl Zeiss lens. The K800i has an amazing Xenon flash, which makes a huge difference to photos taken in the dark or low light. It r eally is a digital camera as much as a phone. Maybe the only thing missing is optical zoom...not so important to me, but it would make it complete! But even the release of the Nokia N93 with its 3x optical zoom cannot tempt me away from the K800i! The screen is amazing, the battery life is outstanding! After the abysmal battery life of most 3G phones, i was expecting this to be one of the phone's downfalls...but I was very pleasantly surprised! The W810i wasn't even a 3G phone but still only lasted about as half as long as the K800i does! Now, I do use it only on the GSM network as I never use video-calling, but I do have a friend on Vodafone who uses it for video calls, and says the battery life is just as good. The user interface is very friendly - very similar to all the previous SE phones, so the phone has received some stick for this from people who are expecting dramatic changes...why??? Why fix what isn't broken? The SE menu system is very easy to use, and thanks to t hemes, all of SE's phones can be personalised. I was also impressed to find that the phone has the same Walkman player found in the Walkman series, only minus the dodgy orange colour. Another feature missing is also MegaBass...not sure why, but I can live without that. And anyhow, I have an iPod, so the music is no big deal for me anyway. But for someone wanting to use this as a music player, I don't think they would be disappointed. The earphones are not brilliant...but I am fussy about my earphones. I don't even like the standard iPod earphones, I always go for the earbuds that have been supplied with the SE Walkman phones. But again, only an avid music fan would be disappointed. The camera is fantastic, even on the 1 and 2mp resolution. I recently went to Greece and took all my photos with my phone, and they all came out amazing. Connectivity is very reliable and very simple. I had a few problems with my laptop finding the drivers, but this usually happens with most phone s and for anyone computer-savvy, it shouldn't be too difficult. The only downsides are the camera slider - very prone to slipping open, however, the camera is set to go to standby after 1 minute, so it doesn't drain the battery anyway. It's just a minor inconvenience. Another is the joystick - I was thrilled when SE replaced the joystick with a navi-pad on the W810i, and thought this would be the way forward for them from then on...unfortunately not. For me, it's not a big problem as I guard my phone with my life and they look almost brand-new for the entire time I have them! But for someone who's not to careful, the joystick is prone to eventually becoming less sensitive, and also bits of dirt can get inside and lead to the joystick becoming very unresponsive. Another thing I was slightly disappointed in is the speakers - still a good sound, but not when I compare it to the Nokia N73 or 6233, which is what I am using now as my secondary phone. They both have dual stereo spe akers, and the difference is very noticeable. However, I never use my phone on loudspeaker to listen to music when I have a fanatastic Hi-Fi in my room! I only wish I had higher-quality speakers in the phones for ringtones...but again, I'm just trying to think of things that have bugged me about this phone, and I can honestly say that nothing has bothered me enough to make me want a different phone. I love it...and I'm sure I will for a very long time. Rating:
Reviewed by virus on 10/09/2006 I have recently upgraded from my trusty K750i to the K800i. Was temted to buy the N73 but all the reports of constant crashes swayed me to stick with Sony, the smartphone option also put me off as applications for the new Symbian operating system are very few and far between (maybe in 6 months time). I always loved the K750's camera, but in comparison the 3.2 megapixel camera with proper xenon flash is outstanding and the bigger screen makes viewing a joy, the K750 screen was too small. Anything sony could have improved on? Well yes, why did they put that lens cover on what is a flagship model? it is far too plasticky and sticks out, why did they not keep the brilliant K750 lens cover, this was metal and slimmer, baffles me. If it aint broke don't fix it! TIP buy a CRYSTAL case, this protects both the screen and lens cover without distracting from the overall look and use of the phone, leather covers etc look so dated. Reviewed by John - Hong Kong on 16/08/2006 Had this phone for about 2 months now, here in Hong Kong we also get a memory card thrown in so a bit of a bargain. Good points - Phone is so simple to use, the bundled games (here anyway) are superb, call quality is great and the camera is just fantastic. Bad points - The keys are at a slight angle so it's easy to hit another key by mistake and everyone else wants to have a play with it all the time. Overall the phone is a great bit of kit. Certainly Sony has given Nokia a good kick in the nads with the release of this phone while Nokia has been suffering reliablity issues with their latest generation stuff. Rating:
