Sony Ericsson K800i Review

Rating:
Date: 11/12/2006
The Sony Ericsson K800i is a top of the range 3G camera phone. It is slightly on the heavy side weighing 115g although for a 3G phone this is not too bad. It is a candy bar design and comes in a black finish or in limited edition silver. It looks quite smart although some say that it is quite large and a bit brick like.
The phone comes equipped with one of the best cameras around at the moment with a whopping 3.2 megapixels and 16 x digital zoom. It has a xenon flash that emits a burst of high intensity light for shooting pictures in low light conditions. The auto-focus feature means the camera automatically focuses on the subject in the focus area in the centre of the screen rather then using a fixed focus point. It also comes with BestPic™ which is a feature that captures nine images in one second with one press of the camera; it captures four shots immediately before the camera key is pressed to complete the shot and four instantly after so you can choose the best picture. The image stabiliser function compensates for small movements of the hand helping to reduce blurry images.
The phone is capable of video recording which also has a stabiliser function to reduce blurriness in the recording. It has video editing software, VideoDJ, which enables you to mix sounds, video clips, pictures and text that you are then able to send as a message. Its second camera is used for video calling. The only gripe about the camera is that some people have found the camera cover to be a nuisance as it slides off easily.
The K800i also has an impressive display being amongst the highest quality in comparison with other top of the range phones. It has 262k colours and a resolution of 240 x 320. The screen is a large TFT display which means that it is visible even in bright sunshine.
The phone has a good media and music player supporting MP3 and AAC formats as well as an FM Radio with a stereo output through the headphones. The radio has a search function and RDS which gives you digital text feeds of information transmitted by radio stations. The K800i also has a direct link to the PlayNow™ so music can be downloaded straight to your phone. The phone supports a superb 72-voice polyphonic sound so 72 notes can be played simultaneously, it can also use MP3's as ringtones. The Melody composer/MIDI (MusicDJ™) is a feature that allows you to create your own ringtones by combining sample music from the drum, guitar, keyboard, bass and brass tools.
Memory is expandable with a Memory Stick Micro card giving you 1 GB as well as internal memory (64MB), to store your images, audio and video files on.
This phone has a good range of connectivity with Bluetooth, USB, infrared and Fast port. With Bluetooth and infrared you can connect wirelessly to another device of the same capabilities, and with USB you can connect to a PC via a cable. The Fast port connection is an advanced system connector for connecting a charger, portable handsfree, cable or other accessory.
With this being a 3G phone, the connection speeds to the internet are like broadband standards which is the fastest speed around for mobiles at the moment. UMTS is a technology that is capable of a 384 kbps data transfer.
Battery life is very good for a 3G phone with up to 350 hours of standby time.
It is run on a tri-band operating frequency which means that it will work in Europe and America but not Japan.
In conclusion, this is a great 3G phone with some very good features. The music player is good although it's not specifically a walkman phone so it isn't as impressive as the W900i, however the K800i compensates for the music player by having such a fantastic camera. It is an all round good quality phone and we would recommend it.

To be honest this phone is brillliant except it breaks way too easily. i'm sorry to say but thois phone just doesnt live up to some of these reviews.

Looking for an upgrade from my old d600, i got a k800i as it had excellent reviews. I didn't like it though it is too much like a brick and the lens cover is rubbish. It is an excellent phone because of what it can do with the camera especially for the price. Overall a good phone but the brick like shape and the lens made me give this phone 3 stars.

The K800i is brilliant. The high resoluton (3 megapixels) of the camera is great and the Cybershot application is just like using the Cybershot digital cameras made by Sony. The M2 memory card slot is also good as you can buy 1 Gigabyte M2 memory cards out of PC World. The phone is also 3G which allows video calling and online 3GP video streaming due to the high speed of GPRS data transfer. However, it would be good if the phone took videos in the AVI format rather than the typical mobile phone 3GP format. AVI videos can be then put into Windows Movie Maker on your Windows Computer. WiFi would also be good to save turning on the computer and to save money to check e-mails and browse the weather forecast. (WiFi is Wireless Fitelity and requires a Wireless Router) The protector for the lens is also nice, but opens too easily and results in me taking pictures of my pocket accentetially. Overall, the phone is fantastic value for the price, but it lacks certain features which make mobile phones trully great.

I got a motorola Razr on Vodafone. Swapped it within two weeks as it was bab. Now, this phone has served me well for nearly 18 months. Its easy to use, fantastic camera and flash (for a phone of course). Avoid LED flash!! The xenon on this is very bright and takes good pics inside and dark conditions. No gonna be as good as a full time camera, but at least you can make phone calls with this! Menu is easy to navigate, memory is expandable, and th little joystick is easy to use. My only (little) gripe with the phone is that the camera lens can come open very easily in your pocket, and lead to flat battery. I avoided this by keeping th phone in a plastic case - bulky, but keeps up the re-sale value......4/5 just for the lens bit. If you see this phone on sale in a shop for less than £60 and have an LED camera phone, crack on and but it!

I got this phone last year and in my opinion, it is great. With a 64MB hard drive and expandable memory, this phone is brilliant. The Cybershot application works just like a digital camera and having RSS is good for keeping up-to-date with what's happening in the news. The downside is the web browser, you sitch off the images to save data costs, but you are still charged fr downloading them as the phone downloads everything off the web page. It justs hides the images, but you are still charged for them. Opera Mini works great on the K800i too. The lens protector for the camera is a nice feature too, but opens too easy and effortslsy and I sometimes find pictures of the inside of my pocket due to this.

This is the Volvo of mobile phones: sturdy, reliable, a bit boxy looking, does the jobs it's meant to do without any fuss. Have had it for a year and the only thing that's gone wrong so far is that after I spilled some water on it, it doesn't recognize my Bluetooth headset. The camera is great, excellent resolution and a powerful xenon flash to boost. Not the best looker but a very robust phone for everyday use. Am very happy with it but am due an upgrade soon and will probably give the new phone to my wife.

This phone is like phenomenol :). I'm the type of person that gets bored of phones easily :(, and yet I've never been bored of this phone! This Christmas I will be having yet another one (it'll will be my third). My reason's for haing so many of the same hadnset, as I've scuffed each one up so it's nice to have a crisp new phone, the other reason, because I fail to find a phone that is as outstanding, good looking an all round 5 star phone. So, this is the phone for me. It's likely that it always will be :).

(ps: the camera lense isnt as hard to open as people say) and the battery plug isnt that fiddly)

***DO NOT BUY*** i had this phone last chrismas and it was fine apart from three things, the camera lens kept opening in my pocket and taking unwanted pictures, even with keylock on, it kept going on the internet in my pocket and wiping my credit, and the sim card holder tends to let the sim lose a lot. after a couple of months it developed a fault the phone kept switching itself on and off, i sent it back to sony and it worked fine after but, after a week the sides of the phone became loose and fell off, this also happend with the camera lens, which actually was a good thing as it stopped taking pictures of the inside of my pocket, after a few more weeks the main keypad became loose and snaped off pulling the joystick with it, i have placed the joystick back in place but the rest will not go onresulting in an ugly, expensive, poor build quality, hard to use, faulty phone... i reapeat ***DO NOT BUY***

Besides from when the reception occasionally shuts off, this is a great phone.

I've had this phone for nearly a year, and despite a few freezes and sudden restarts in its time, it has been a great phone. Calling and texting can not be faulted. I use the camera and video all the time. At the end of the day, if you're thinking about getting it, do not be put off by the bad reviews. The only problem I noticed is that the phone's internet button is really easily pressed while in your pocket, which turns on the internet and costs money. I had to change the settings so the internet was disabled. The battery life is average. Calling, playing music and using the camera obviously drains the battery like every phone, but you have the ability to keep the screen brightness low, which make the battery lasts longer. The volume isnt as loud as i would have liked, but that is something i have just had to come to terms with. This phone has been dropped and smashed about a number of times and is still going strong albeit a few scratches. In terms of price and q uality, the phone is a must buy. I'm hoping to get a viewty for christmas. Hope this helps!

The K800i is a good phone in theory but after having owned one and having to have it repaired twice, I beg to differ. The camera is good but the video recorder is next to useles. It is so rubbish you can count the pixels on one hand, even if you were wearing mittens. another common problem is the music player no matter how you upload your music to your phone, the chances of the track details (tags) being displayed are about 1 in 5 the 3D games are good but only if you have enough money for them from the mobile internet which is very tempermental. The 3G nework breaks reguarly, e.g. if you found a 3G signal, surfed a bit then the next day you went to exactly the same place you probably wouldn't be able to get signal. In conclusion DON'T BUY A SONY ERICSSON!!

The camera is so much better than most 5mp cameraphones so don't be put off because it only has 3.2mp, the lens it uses is amazing quality as is the flash. You really need to get a memory card as the phone memory is tiny but apart from that it is the best phone I have ever owned by a mile. It took me a while to like ths phone, simply because its black bricklike shape made it look butch and mannish, I thought. Then I saw the silver version and my eyes lit up! It was just so attractive. Once I'd actually bought one I found a wealth of features, amazing camera, impressive music player and a host of other features. And it was so so easy to use! The software is easily installed and ransferring music over was a breeze. Once I'd had my socks knocked off by what this phone could acually do I began to see it in a new light. I found that superficially 'attractive' phones (ahem like the S500i) could be a pile of old rubbish while those more subtle designs could deliver in amazing style. So in a sense I became less superficial. When my silver one gave up the ghost I bought the black version I'd hated so much before! I find it so tactile, the rubber coating is so velvety hence it's name velvet black. Yes, it's big but it still fits in the handbag or pocket easily. So thankyou SE, you've made a convert out of me!

What a phone! It's not pretty by any measure, but is packed with features. If you can overlook it's brick like appearance you will not regret buying it. Add a 2g M2 memory card and you will have plenty of room for thousands of songs and pictures. And you can use your own music as the ringtone. It's durable - dropped mine plenty of times and no damage whatsoever. Although big it can still fit in your pocket or handbag. I usually get tired of phones after a few months, but not this one. I've bought samsungs (what a mistake) and nokias (not bad) but I always keep coming back to this one. The battery is OK but the good thing is, it charges up very quickly. On the downside, the headphones supplied are pretty poor and just won't stay in. I bought a new set and the sound is brilliant. Unfortunately SE have their own style charger and headphones so if you did want to change the headphones you can't use your own set, you'd have to buy SE ones. This is a bit of a rip off. Apa rt from that I'm still giving it 5 stars because it really is an outstanding phone. You can get it now for ridiculously low prices,as it's about to be discontinued, so my advice is go out and get it before supplies run out!

I previously had the Sony ericcson W350i on Orange pay as you go, and it was Okay for a while, but (as much as I knew it'd happen) the flip part broke and came off meaning I can't lock the keypad at all. I was looking for a phone with durability (not that i'm at all clumsy). So I went looking through the shops and I found the K800i! and basically it's incredible, it's the best phone I've ever had, I bought the phone cover which completely removes the problem of the lens camera. and battery life, and literaly every feature is just so much better. Also, the W350i phone had a (to be honest) rubbish camera, 1 megapixel and it couldn't even record video, this is quite the opposite, as it's one of the best camera's about on a phone and records video and has both Video Dj and Photo Dj. Overall, I can't see any faults and i've had this for months.

I had this phone on contract with o2 it was the silver james bond one. First impression was, how cool is my phone. At the time it was the best camera out and i still rate it quite highly for picture quality. Now to the problems my games wouldnt work after about 5 months, after about 7 months some of my pictures were deleted by the phone dont know how, my music wouldn't work very well either, the phone slowed right up when using 2 applications, the final straw came when my headphone stopped working therefore i had to recieve calls through my loudspeaker turned right down, this made me look like trigger happy Dom. NICE! I took the phone back and it was returned within 2 weeks in full working order and was given to my Dad who had no problems with it. Apart from the minor faults it was a excellent phone. I have just invested in the W910i after breaking my LG Viewty's screen and everything is swell..... for the moment.

This phone is a LEGEND! It raised the benchmark for what we could expect from camera phones. The bright xenon flash leaves others in the shade as they cling on to their paltry LED flashes. And it's not just the camera which excels. With the addition of a memory card, the music player is excellent though not a walkman phone, so can't expect all the features that come with those. But it does the job and it does it well. It makes me laugh when others complain about the small keypad. Have you seen the tiny keypads on many phones these days? And the touch sensitive ones, well don't get me started on those. I cannot recommend this phone highly enough and as a self confessed phone addict, I've been through quite a few phones, but always come back to this old favourite. Of course it has it's downsides, and these will put many people off. It's big and the camera lens juts out at the back. Heavy phones are good for taking pictures though as they reduce camera shake. It's solid build gives you a sense of security (mine has suffered many drops and come up smiling) as the current trend for the thinnest phones makes you feel like they will snap apart in your hand. OK, not a phone for everyone, but if you're willing to overlook it's bricklike shape then you're in for a real treat. They have been discontinued and stocks are currently running out so if you find one it will really be at a knockdown price. Go on, get one!

I've had the k800i for about a week now, having retired my Motorola V3. I have to say it's a lot chunkier than I thought it would be and I'm still getting used to holding it and fitting it in my pocket (though having had 2 slim clamshell phones for the past 3 years it's understandable). Once you start getting past the aesthetics, the phone's features are rather good. 3.2mp camera that takes beautiful quality pictures, a more than decent display screen with easy to use menu interface and dedicated music player button. The only niggles I have with it is the less than impressive video quality, the small fiddly keypad, the fact you can accidently take pictures even if you lock your phone, and that I've noticed it takes longer for my calls to connect than when I was using my V3. But overall it's a great and gorgeous (albeit chunky) phone to have with useful features to keep you entertained.

This phone is absolutely fantastic. Had the K750i previously which was also a great little phone but this one takes it to the next level - who cares if it's a tad bulky? It is very reliable, has great call quality and the camera is excellent. One downside is I miss the 'flash'/torch from my k750, but that's not a big problem really. The screen is amazingly crystal clear, very sharp and vivid colours, and the size is just right. I know this phone is by no means new, and I've had it now for around 8 months but I have no plans to replace it anytime soon. It does everything I want. Along with the torch missing are a few little niggles, I find the menu system agonisingly slow sometimes, which is a complete contrast to my k750. Also, I can't seem to get 3G working on my phone (o2) for some reason (it worked at first!) This doesn't detract from anything I've said though, a great phone. I would say get one of these phones now whilst they're cheap.

I previously had a Samsung E900 which was amazingly easy to use but just lacked a decent camera. I am very pleased with the camera on the K800i and on most occassions it has replaced the use of my digital camera as it is easy to use and simply takes cracking shots :) The music player is superb though it now crashes occasionally but i can put that down to the phones age. Buttons are deceivingly easy to use and the toggle stick isnt that bad. As mentioned in the review my only concern is the camera lens cover which slides open on many occassions leaving me with lots of picturs of the inside of my pocket, just what i needed :S all in all a very good phone, easy to use, well organised, good design and weight and one hell of a camera. I was recommended by several people, not all with vested interests, that the K800i was an excellent and well proven phone, so I took the plunge. In the year which has passed since then, the phone has been back to the 3 tech. dept. no less than three times and to SonyEricsson once, always because it refuses to accept charge; currently it refuses to send text messages, but since I can change it next week, that is precisely what I'll be doing. I am told that the phone has lots of wonderful features, but frankly I don't care, my phone is for talking on, and the very occasional text, I do however talk on it a great deal, and since this phone has been away being repaired for over 5 of the last 52 weeks I will not be sorry to see the end of it. I have no complaints, I have had no trouble with the software and, despite comments on the internet, I have had no problems with the joystick. Perhaps people are too heavy handed!?! The only thing I might change is the small internet button which is easy to hit by accident when using the 'back' button. I have never come across a phone as extraordinary as this. It was a present from my grandma n it really WAS the best gift ever. I didnt like it at first as it does have a brick like feature to it .. but it is so strong. The day after i got it - i accidentally left it outside. The wind blew n it blew rite off the garden table and "broke" it. The battery came out and everything. I really didnt know whtt i was going to do. i put it back together hoping it would switch on.. and to my amazement it did ! not only that but it had no scratch wat-so-ever. strongest fone ever. not only that but it has great features. Camera OUTSTANDING - ... it really is hard to describe the quality of the phone. i really recommend it - espacilly for clumsy people (like me) who drop and break everything. for SURE - this fone will not dissapoint. :D
