Reviewed by Anna on 15/03/2010I got this phone on a 10 pound a month contract from vodafone, I had no huge expectations but I liked it because it looked so very good in the photo.. the phone is excellent, it's worked absolutely impeccably for me and it's very reliable and it's pretty to look at. I also like the fact that it does not look cheap. Messaging is easy, the camera is easy to use, with good flash and takes good quality photos. The MP3 player is very good, very solid sound and the phone always works well, good sound quality, good ringtones, durable, good battery life. I have never had any complaints whatsoever. Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Mark on 15/03/2010 I bought this phone to replace my K800i which gave up its ghost. For those who are used to the K800i/810i, the C510i has quite a few changes in the interface i.e Message Settings are not in Message anymore but in Settings > Connectivity. Screen is definitely better than the K800i i.e colour saturation but the camera is the biggest let down here with no xenon flash. Without the Xenon flash, you need a steady hand to get a sharp picture. Didn't happen to me with the K800i...audio is superb compared to the K800i and video is better too. Another thing I don't like about this phone is there is no Clock Sleep Mode. Used to seeing the time display in idle mode, it's quite a scum to press on any button just to see the time...oh, and it sometimes can't read my memory card too. I think I wont be sticking to this phone long and will go for the C905... Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Tracey on 10/03/2010 I have had the C510 for almost 8 months and I hate it. The camera is dreadful due to its useless LED Flash. The buttons are small and it has been back for a firmware upgrade to sort out the sticky/non responsive buttons and it ability to switch itself on and off. Alas it made no difference whatsoever. I also have to charge it every night the battery life is so dreadful. I text a great deal and I find the T9 infuriating. It always offers words that don't exist, the REAL words, you know the ones you use daily are always bottom of the list. I am on 18 month contract with this phone and am considering buying another before I end up in a mental institution. PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER THIS PHONE! But it isn't for a couple of reasons. The first is the media player, which takes far too many key strokes to get into, and you can't shortcut directly into the music folder. This is a total pain when you use the music regularly. Secondly is the very loud beep when using the voice recorder. It's unnecessarily intrusive. It should be possible to tone it down. I can see the reason why a beep is necessary as notification if you are recording someone during a telephone conversation, but when you are using the voice recorder on its own no beep is necessary - after all a normal voice recorder doesn't make a beep when you use it, nor should one on a phone. Third is that you can't use the camera light as a torch like on the W810, which was a great convenience. On paper it sounds great - high resolution camera, auto focus, etc, but the sound quality on calls is poor, the keyboard is failing after just a couple of months, and the camera is truly awful! Granted it can probably take good quality pictures, but it takes so long to autofocus, calculate exposure, etc that unless you're taking a landscape picture, the subject will have long-since disappeared by the time this damn thing actually gets round to doing anything! I'd describe the camera as virtually useless, so all you're left with is an overpriced, poorly built standard phone, which is little better than something you could pick up for £30 on pay as you go. It is thin and not big in size, loud for music too and rotates like walkman phones when phone is tilted to one side. The camera quality is excellent and volume is superb. Text messages are recieved as IMS to make them better (more fun) but that feature can be disabled. The 3 6 9 AND # key are dedicated buttons for when the camera is on. The only negative point I have on this I have large hands so when I press the little buttons at side of the select key I sometimes knock the option I want to use off by my thumb being on 2 buttons. I thought a cheaper, more straight forward phone would be the way forward. Unfortunately this is a prime example of you get what you pay for. The camera is ok in the outdoors, but very poor indoors. I hardly ever get full signal strength no matter where in the country I am, and as a result regularly miss texts and calls. The internet is slow too. The battery life faded very quickly despite following the instructions for charging on the first use. Even when I don't make any calls I have to recharge every 2 days. In short, this is a massive disappointment. I feel I would be better off going back to my K800i! This is a step backwards for me, and i'll be changing phones as soon as I can. So, in the advantages of the phones features are good. But after having the phone for a few months, (for me it took 5 months) the phone started to develop faults in my different ways. It would randomly turn off, the contacts list would come up weird looking symbols, the speaker starts to get distorted and just recently the phone starts to black out and not turn on again. So right now I have a phone that has a mind of its own. Sony Ericsson are good, but not in the long term. Because its slimmer than the K800, its a lot less robust - After three weeks, a bit of the cover had permanently popped out just from being in my pocket. Also, the accelerometer was off balance by about 45 degrees for no reason, which is annoying when you want to view your photos. Not that you'd want to because the "3.2MP cybershot" camera is shockingly bad. I'd go as far a saying its half as good as the K800i camera. The lack of a Back button and a pause button is also disappointing. The difference is, at its time, the K800i was top of the range. The C510 is suppose to be mid-range so if you want something outstanding then you'd better look above this model. I think this phone is great in terms of the features provided at this price range. But SERIOUSLY, talking back to my first week after purchase...on just the 6th day, I was using it normally, using the Sony Ericsson's original software, transferring music via bluetooth onto my phone. It was working fine until one song that crashed my phone. That file my phone crashed on was perfectly fine (and proved to be fine after I got my phone fixed)...and so after it crashed, it first, couldn't recognize my SIM card, then secondly it said my battery wasn't an original Sony Ericsson battery, but it was!...then on the third re-boot, it couldn't find my mobile network, and my them went wacky...and master reset didn't do anything but delete all the data, then screwing up it's own OS. I obviously had to take this phone back to Sony Ericsson for servicing...glad it only took 2 hou rs. A second problem is that now I'm using this phone for the third week, the back where it writes "3.2 megapixels auto focus"...the "3.2" is fading/partially rubbed off... and now...even the "megapixel" word is starting to rub off...but I've just been making normal calls and normal texting with a dry hand...and I don't even use my phone that often. Right now, I'm worrying if the stuck-on "Cyber-shot" logo would fall off too... I would say this phone is a "very-good" overall, but is unreliable in terms of the physical features, and the OS is somewhat unstable as to what happened to mine within the first week of purchase... ...oh and camera...it's good for regular quick/random photos...but the capture speed is a bit slow...but that isn't that of an issue. I’m a heavy user so stress over what upgrade to get each year (thank you Mobile Phones UK for annually helping me out)! But I’ve made the right choice this year. I’ve had a lot of different types of phones and have now decided to stay away from touch screens completely. Knowing what buttons you have or have not pressed is bliss, not to mention the ease of use and speed when texting. I have also decided SE’s are definitely my favourite. Their menu’s make sense, things are where you would expect them to be and as a camera phone lover, the picture quality really is very good. Last year I defected to LG after having another SE (which I loved), but I’m so glad I’m now back with such a user friendly phone. This phone is truly outstanding. In the looks department, it has a lovely quality build feel to it and (on my black version) on the front it has a very, very subtle glitter effect to it which makes the casing look that little bit more expensive. I’ve seen people saying that the buttons are tiny, but they’re just average size for a candy bar phone – I’ve had no problems. I can’t tell you have happy I am with this phone, that is actually classed as a cheaper market phone. My contract provider could only offer me a down grade to keep my bill at the same price this year, so I reluctantly went for this phone and am so surprised at how good it really is. As I say, I’m mostly interested in the camera function on phones and this does not disappoint. I was very put off that this only has 3.2 megapixels but it is a Cyber-Shot camera phone, so has wonderful gadgets to play with, but mostly, is really good quality. Obviously it can’t replace a stand alone camera, but I do use it as such and it definitely does the job for me. If you want a cheaper market phone (as PAYG or contract) that looks good, hasn’t got annoying touch screen bits anywhere & is generally a fantastic bit of kit – then go for this. I highly recommend it. Enjoy!
