Samsung U600 Review

Rating:
Date: 02/06/2007
The Samsung U600 is the slimmest slide phone in the world. At just 10.9 mm thickness, it's almost as slim as an iPod, and more compact. Yet inside you'll find a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash and a high quality MP3 player. The onboard memory is 60 Mbytes, which is enough to hold a dozen or so songs, but you can expand the memory to 2 Gbytes with a cheap microSD memory card. You'll also find Bluetooth wireless connectivity, for swapping music and games with friends, or listening in wireless stereo with a Bluetooth headset. The U600 offers high quality photographic and music capabilities in a tiny package. The only thing we're not so keen on is the touch-sensitive buttons, but they do look cool! The price of the U600 has dropped substantially since launch and you can find some great deals on the net. Partly the reason for this has been the problem with the touch-sensitive buttons. Samsung seem to have learned their lesson, as their latest range of phones have conventional keypads. If you think that you can live with the touch-sensitive keys, then the U600 offers great value for money. Otherwise, we recommend that you choose the older but more user-friendly D900i, or go for the newer, more advanced G600, which has a 5 megapixel camera but is not quite as thin.

Features of the Samsung U600 include:

  • Touch-sensitive keys
  • Camera: 3.2 megapixels with autofocus, flash, 4 x digital zoom
  • Video Camera: Video player (MPEG4, H.263, AAC), Video recording (MPEG4, H.263, AAC)
  • Display: 262,144 colours / QVGA 240 x 320 / TFT LCD
  • Music Player: MP3, ACC, ACC+, e-AAC+ formats with Bang & Olufsen digital power amp
  • Java Games:
  • Ringtones: 64-voice polyphonic ringtones, MP3 ringtones
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0, TV-Out
  • Memory:60 MB user memory, micro SD™ External memory
  • Messaging: SMS, EMS, MMS, Email
  • Internet: WAP 2.0, GPRS Class 10, EDGE
  • Talk Time: Up to 4 hours
  • Standby: Up to 270 hours
  • Operating Frequency: Quad band (GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz)
  • Size: 103 x 49 x 11 mm
  • Weight: 81g

Terriable phone! Upgraded to this on the reccommendation of T Mobile in September, and within 3 weeks, its battery life was awful, it freezes, switches itself off. its flimsy, ive tried to change it, and they wont let me, they sent me a new charger - no change - sent me a new handset - but no new battery - still no change! Its awful! Would never ever reccommend this! Or T mobile for that matter! Ive had nothing but trouble with this phone and with T Mobile! Anyone else had trouble like this?? I dont know what to do as can't afford to buy the G600!

Average phone in my opinion. There are much worse but much better. Annoying touch sensitive buttons - yes to get used to them but it's still irritating every now and again when you accidently mess up. The battery is truly appalling, worst I have ever come across even just on standby. Very poor plasticky quality. Feels like the slider will break very easily. I have just ditched this phone for the Nokia 5310. It's on another planet in every way other than the camera. Size, weight, feel, quality, sound, menu system, functionality. If you want a decent camera, buy a camera!

I've owned this phone for two months. It's a beautiful phone, stunning to look at ... and I hate it. It's hard to use, unfriendly and unforgiving, and I long for my Samsung S100, that I loved, and would never have replaced if it hadn't stopped working. The T9 assumes you never, ever make a mistake such as accepting "of" instead of "me". If you hit the space key, that's it. There's no way to go back and fix it except to delete and retype the _entire _word. Often, if you hit a wrong key, you get offered 2 options, neither of which you want (example, Send or Save to draft). You have to accept one or the other; there's no way back. If you try to get back to where you were you lose your entire message and have to start again. One of the reasons I bought this phone was because it was supposed to have good www support. But you can't change the homepage away from Samsung Fun Club, filling in forms is incredibly finicky, and it won't connect to Google Mail. I've used hard-to-use phones: my first was a Motorola 5200. But at least it came with a manual. I'd be prepared to learn about this one's quirks, except there's no way to find out. The manual is a pathetic "Getting Started" leaflet (48 pages slightly larger than A7, one quarter of it health & safety guff). It doesn't even list all the menu options, let alone explain what they do. You're clearly expected to read manuals from other phones to learn to use the camera and video recorder. I wouldn't mind if there was a manual available via download, but no. The only way you can edit the phonebook without retyping over and over is to hook the phone up to a PC. The phone has no cut-number/paste-number facility. And the software, Samsung PC Studio 3, is only slightly better than its predecessor, Easy GPRS. Both insist that a contact can have only one mobile number. Most people who work regularly in several countries have one number in each. This phone was expensive and I bitterly regret having bought it. I feel as though I was dumped by the pretty, friendly, funny girl next door, and then got involved with a supermodel, only to discover she's a heartless, selfish bitch.

Well worth the buy. Don't know why so many people complain about so-called flaws, etc. I certainly haven't experienced any. Heat/touch sensitive keys are not 'too sensitive' like so many have made them out to be. Obviously they think that they're pushing a button, press too hard and mess the screen up. Texting for me is taking getting used to (never had a Samsung before). When I make a mistake , I go to press the back button instead of 'cancel' and I'm then asked do I want to save as a draft. I'll get used to it soon!

Wow, seriously this really is an excellent phone. Received it a week ago for my birthday and it's worked perfectly so far. Keypad, for me anyway, is really easy and comfortable to use, despite me ending a text by accident once, thought it was really down to my own clumsiness. Camera is excellent, really clear. Obviously, the phone look excellent and I can't get over how thin it is. I've actually found myself getting it out of my pocket to send a text and then I'll just look at it for a few minutes before realization hits and brings me back to Earth. Seriously, can't recommend the phone enough. Go buy it. =]

This is without doubt THE WORST phone i have ever had the misfortune of owning! Perhaps the worst thing is the fact that i have another 12 months left to go on my contract! I have had the phone for 6 months and at first thought it was a great phone and one of the best i'd had (like many posters here) but unfortunatley lately everything mentioned in other posts has started to happen. the screen goes blank for no reason and can stay that way for a few mins. It can turn itself off at will and mysteriously reset itself overnight - with me losing several messages and all my settings i had saved. Texting is an absolute nightmare and the touch screen is way too sensitive - i've had other touch screens and never experienced anything like this. Do not believe the nonsense people are writing about how good it is (i thought that at first) - they've obviously just not had it long enough!! If it aint broke, it soon will be!!!

Before writing this review, I'd just like to say what a shame it is that i'm forced to give this phone a whole 1 out of 5 stars, beleive, it does not deserve even a half. If your hot on texting, like I and quite a big portion of the phone maret is, then this phone will seem like it was designed specifically to spite you: the touch screen interface is dreadful; to select a predicted word you sometimes have to scroll up and sometimes scroll down, just to confuse you; to delete one character in a text, you must press the same button you would to delete the entire message, meaning if your finger stays on the button for a second too long, Bang goes your entire message; the predictive dictionary is abysmal too, it forgets words you may want to add if they're not used in every second sentence, and mine has now decided to forget my entire dictionary, rendering it completely useless. Especialy as it didn't contain many words in the first place. Try using a word slightly out of the ordinary, 'Sickeningly' for example, and the T9 returns with 'sickenioglx'. Now that's handy. But texting isn't all: as some other reviewers have stated, the camera is shockingly bad. The auto-focus is not good at all, it requires absolutely perfect lighting to get a decent shot and the flash is nothing short of pathetic. The worst thing about it however is the fact that it can take up to 6 seconds to take a picture, by which time whatever you wanted to capture has long gone - why even bother including a camera at all eh samsung? In conclusion, this is a catastrophically terrible phone. The screen cracks when its just sitting in your pocket, the flip mechanism is flimsy, the interface is confusing, touch screen buttons are appalling and the battery life... Don't even get me started.

This phone is great. The camera is great; autofocus works really well, video quality is great. It obviously looks really good. The touch sensitive buttons are not as bad as some of the negative reviews claim they are... at all. How can you accidentally erase a text when the left touch button only deletes the last character? Unless you are a complete idiot and manage to hold the button down for 1-2 seconds without realizing then this is damn near unexplainable. The touch buttons are raised above the reguar ones because they are on the sliding part of the phone so I honestly don't see where all these problems are coming from.

The touch keys took less than 10 mins to get used to. The battery life for the thinnest phone on the market is very good. Texting is very very easy. Sorry I got this phone, reception is so poor and texting is very hard. Whats the point in a phone having nice features if it doesnt function well as a phone?! Predicitve texting: the buttons change depending on how long the text is, what line you are on. Sometimes its the up button to change word, other times its the down. Press the wrong one and you can find your entering weird numbers into the To box. Then you press the end call button to delete the numbers only to find out that discards the whole text. Not impressed. Buying a Nokia 6300 or Sony K810i.

I got this phone 3 weeks ago now and i honestly can not find one thing wrong with it. Where should i start? Well, the camera quality is immense, 3.2 megapixels, i have already snapped 267 awesome picures. The music player is superb and can easily rival walkman. Some people have complained about the lack of a 3.5mm jack but hat van be bought from anywhere. The sound quality through the speaker is exceptional, so loud and clear! It rivals my old w810i easily! The touch sensitive buttons are fantastic, and respond to everything brilliantly. Also the battery life is so much better than my w810i, it easily lasts 3-4 days. There is only one slight niggle i have with it though, even though it seems ridiculous is that you cannot seem to view snapped pictures in full-screen mode. if anyone has a solution for this i will be very grateful. For some bizarre reason, my predictive text just decides to stop predicting halfway through a message. I have to turn the phone off to sort it. The buttons are way to sensitive. I keep clearing the text message or calling people by accident. The camera takes forever to take the picture, and seeing as the camera is usually used by others to take pictures of me and my friends, it's not something I can workaround. The battery life isn't too hot either. I'm going to send this back and go back to my D600. I haven't got the patience to put up with these annoyances. Best looking phone I've seen though!

I've had this phone for 8 weeks now. The U600 main bad points are: 1. Terrible battery life. I need to charge it every day. 2. Texting is a nightmare. The predictive text software is awful. When given a list of possible words sometimes you have to scroll up, other times you have to scroll down. Why? 3. The touch sensitive buttons are great in theory but are not practical. Quite a number of times I've accidentally dialled someone while reading their text. Also if you need to press number keys while in a phone call (automated line etc) you have to unlock the phone before each number press (each choice) 4. Has a tendency to cut the other caller off half way through a phone call for no reason whatsoever, mine also changes into Dutch in the text language every time it's turned off and selecting symbols like £ takes about 8-10 different key presses. In summary nice looking phone, but some of the more practical options can be very fustrating, personally think Sony Ericsson phones are more user friendly phones but don't currently make a 'sexy' phone!

I recently bought the purple U600 2 days ago and it is the best phone I have ever had! I upgraded from a Nokia 6280, which I had no problems with at all despite negative reviews. This may be a lengthy post so scroll down to conclusion if you would rather not read it all! No software problems as of yet. - Battery - I dont see what most people are complaining about. In the 2 days I have had this, I have 2 bars of battery out of 3 and as it is new it has been picked up more than usual. I do not know how long the battery lasts yet on average but it is more than 2 days! - Design - The u600 looks great. I have the purple version which is the 'in' colour this Autumn and it looks stunning. I can't stop looking at it. The phone is robust and made of metal, even though it is so thin I don't feel as though I will break it when I slide it. The colour that the screen displays is amazing. Very strong, vibrant, bright colours. Love it. - Touch sensitive buttons - I was worried about the sensitivity before I got it but it is not over sensitive at all. I have not had problems with calling random people by accident and the phone locks itself when you start a call so you cannot end the call by accident. In fact they make it difficult for you to end the call because you have to unlock it and then end call but its no hassle. Sometimes I have to touch the button a few times for it to register. - Camera - I have taken a few pictures and my only gripe with it is that the delay on it is quite extortionate. My previous phone had no delay on it at all but the U600 finds it difficult to capture moving objects, even if the object isnt going anywhere fast it will blur. But what can you expect from a mobile phone. If I wanted a high quality camera with no delay and no motion blur I would buy a camera rather than a mobile phone. I haven't taken any videos yet. I cant upload pictures onto my computer yet either because they need to be on the memory card rather than phone memory I assume. Camera quality on a non moving object is quite good as far as I can see on the screen! - Texting - No problems with texting, the predictive text is fine. Only problem that I have experienced with texting is that I sometimes cancel the whole text so I have to write it out 3 times before I send it. This is because I am used to my Nokia and the button to go back to delete a letter was the top right button whereas the Samsung's top right button is the exit button and the bottom right button is the back button! On the text screen it says 'back' above the top right button which also confuses me! But back to Samsung means go back to previous menu! That will just take a bit of time to get used to. - Radio and MP3's - Radio and MP3 quality is better than I had expected! Better sound quality than my Nokia but of course not as good as Sony's walkman phones. The radio has to be listened to through the headset or bluetooth headset but MP3's can be played out loud. The volume can go quite loud but I am not one to play music out loud on buses or anywhere for that matter! Headset is good! I think thats all the important things! Of course this phone also has things like calculator, world clock, alarm, internet which I haven't been on yet and so forth. - Conclusion - Overall, a very attractively designed phone that is extremely thin but also robust and strong. Colour screen is amazingly bright and colourful. Everything is placed in a logical location in the menu and easy to access. Touch sensitive keys are not over sensitive and work fine, the phone locks itself if you make a call, don't use it for a while or close the slider. Good points: *Looks great *Not flimsy *reacts fast to button presses *Bluetooth capabilities *Connects to the computer and to tv's *Takes pictures and video although there is a delay of about 3 seconds on pictures Bad Points: *Camera delay on pictures *The lack of a tv-out cable, the phone does not come with one I do think that this phone is targeted more to the female market rather than for men. This is not meant in a sexist way but the design, looks and colours this phone comes in is more feminine. I would defiantly recommend this phone if they do not want an amazing camera but want something that does what it says on the tin.

I bought this phone 2 months ago based on the reviews on this site, and overall I'm very disappointed with it. First off, the good points: 1. It looks great. I've had plenty of people comment on it. It is a very sleek, attractive phone. 2. The screen is a decent size, and seems reasonably scratch resistant. Hmm..I've run out of good points already. Bad points: 1. The touch sensitive keys are annoying. They are kind of cool at first, but in daily use I find myself inadvertently making calls and having to cancel them quickly. I resent them now 2. Texting- both the keys and the user interface make this very awkward compared to my last phone, the K750i. It feels like the phone is trying to make it as awkward as possible to text. Word suggestions in predictive mode sometimes pop up below the word you're entering, sometimes above, which is very annoying while texting. Texting should be about consistent, repeatable patterns of keystrokes, to speed up the process. 3. The user interface in general seems non-intuitive compared to the K750i and various Nokias I've used previously. Simple things are just that bit more complex to do, like creating calendar reminders, deleting text messages, setting an alarm- this last one is so frustrating that I've given up on it and get my girlfriend to set a morning alarm on her phone. 4. Miserly selection of ring and message tones I really want to like it, I've used other Samsung models belonging to friends that were better. But right now I wish I had bought something else, probably the Sony Ericsson W810i, which was cheaper and came with a 512 memory card free. In summary, this phone is like a very attractive but super high-maintenance girfriend. Nice to look at, impossible to live with.

I just handed in my D900 over for a upgrade and now have the even thinner U600 its very similar to the D900 - the control layout is the same but has now touch sensitive buttons which makes it rather unique. The music player lists your albums by title and album which is a great improvement and you can drag music direct to your memory card on your phone via windows...so you dont need the software!! which is a massive improvement on the D900 where you couldnt which was extremely annoying i mean stress the word annoying! ......It also has a RADIO too unlike the D900.... I am really pleased Samsung all you need now is a quicker camera to take shots then ill give you 6/5! but considering the thiness and a 3.2mpx camera...i cant argue! Again nice one Samsung!

Will be taking it back to carphone warehouse!!! Also hate the texting it was impossible for me to text at first and im a v quick texter on other phones everytime i pressed a key it would go back to idle screen and i would have to start again this is due to the overly sensitve touch buttons. I have only just got used to it, doesnt seem to have a lot of memory either , i dont have the card, i dont want it!! " other people i know lost their screen completely so better get it to carphone warehouse as they will only say i dropped it, if screen is complete blank. The music playing capabilities of this phone are poor. You can store about 6-10 tracks on the phone's internal memory and they are fine. However, any tracks stored on a MicroSD card can only be played one track at a time. So you have to go into the menus, and click on a track each time - you can't play two songs continuously from a microSD card let alone an album or a playlist which I find bizarre. Basically it seems to be a rubbish music player. I personally find the touch sensitive pad way too sensitive, but guess that's a personal issue... Otherwise a decent phone.

Having been a Nokia user for 10 years i decided to try this, and i wish i hadn't bothered. Sure it has some great features but the security is rubbish. I have enabled phone privacy and phone lock, it does not let you into files and folders but will still make calls. Don't believe me? Then dial a number when it prompts you for your password press exit and you can continue dialling. Not good if you are on a contract phone like me. If anyone does know how to stop people dialling numbers after enabling security i would appreciate any comments. Like everyone else i was attracted to its look, size and features, but without cast-iron security that isn't any good to me. Back to Nokia for me i'm afraid. :-(

Great phone with a cracking 3.2 MegaPixel camera and an updated Music Player. Yes the battery doesn't last that long but if your using it as a phone it still lasts 3-4 days, it's only when you use the multimedia functions loads that it starts to drain the battery, but i'd argue that almost any other phone other than the stupidly huge N95 has the same problem. My previous phone was a Sony K800i and it had one of the best Batteries of any phone but that still only lasted 1-2 days if you used the camera or Music player alot and the U600 is not far behind. The camera also seems as good if not better than the K800i in some lighting conditions (well impressed!) and the Music player is alot better than the D900i so you won't miss the Walkman player on the Sony's either. Games are a little trickier to get onto the Phone (but it can be done without paying those premium prices)and the touch pad takes a little getting used to but anyone complaining about the touchpad should h ave had the commonsense to try one out before hand and i don't think it's much of an issue, you just need to give it more than a few days and not have hands like a gorilla..

If you have to pay for this phone, don't bother. Get a different one. SMS: The t9 forgets words. When adding a word it defaults to Abc. Most words start lower case. When prompting for the possible replacement word one normally scrolls down to it, unless you're slightly past half way in the text and then one has to scroll up. Nice and consistent. If the replacement word is over a certain length or when putting exclamation marks etc on the end of a long word, the drop down doesn't show the last part of the word. When the phone has just turned on, the input language is german. ffs. Calls: All ok. Not even samsung could get it wrong. Touch sensitive buttons: What a load of rubbish. What _is_ the point of them? It's not like they give more screen space or any benefit at all from what I can see. They do confuse when trying to finish a call and annoy when doing other things. Be prepared to call people when you don't want to. Camera: Oh my. Words fail me. What a piece of crud. Do they not test things at samsung? It takes 4-5 seconds from pressing the button to the picture being taken. So, if you brace your self and take pics of still life you should be ok. Taking a pic of something moving is a total waste of time.

I had the D600 last time and that was a much better camera. I dont know if its the software or a fault in the camera but by the time you click your subject the camera does not take the pic for several secs later, so you usually lost the reason you wanted the picture in the beginning. I've had this phone just over two weeks now and I'm thinking of changing it already. I was hoping I'd just get used to it, but I'm not sure I can. If I then switch to silent (as I'm doing before sending a text so I don't get the annoying confirmation tone) and then back to not silent it takes off the vibrate. 3. On my old Samsung I could have the phone on silent at night time but the alarm would still come on in the morning. It doesn't with this one and have been woken up numerous times by people sending texts in the middle of the night. 4. I also can't switch the phone off and still have the alarm come on. 5. If I switch the dialling display to anything but "normal" it switches the keypad tone on. I don't want the keypad tone on! 6. The camera is waaaaay too slow - it takes about 10+ seconds to take a picture - nothing like capturing the moment. 7. The touch sensitive buttons are a bit of a pain, but I'm getting used to them, although I have rung loads of people I didn't mean to.
