Samsung U600 Review

Rating:
Date: 02/06/2007
The Samsung U600 is the slimmest slide phone in the world. At just 10.9 mm thickness, it's almost as slim as an iPod, and more compact. Yet inside you'll find a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash and a high quality MP3 player. The onboard memory is 60 Mbytes, which is enough to hold a dozen or so songs, but you can expand the memory to 2 Gbytes with a cheap microSD memory card. You'll also find Bluetooth wireless connectivity, for swapping music and games with friends, or listening in wireless stereo with a Bluetooth headset. The U600 offers high quality photographic and music capabilities in a tiny package. The only thing we're not so keen on is the touch-sensitive buttons, but they do look cool! The price of the U600 has dropped substantially since launch and you can find some great deals on the net. Partly the reason for this has been the problem with the touch-sensitive buttons. Samsung seem to have learned their lesson, as their latest range of phones have conventional keypads. If you think that you can live with the touch-sensitive keys, then the U600 offers great value for money. Otherwise, we recommend that you choose the older but more user-friendly D900i, or go for the newer, more advanced G600, which has a 5 megapixel camera but is not quite as thin.

Features of the Samsung U600 include:

  • Touch-sensitive keys
  • Camera: 3.2 megapixels with autofocus, flash, 4 x digital zoom
  • Video Camera: Video player (MPEG4, H.263, AAC), Video recording (MPEG4, H.263, AAC)
  • Display: 262,144 colours / QVGA 240 x 320 / TFT LCD
  • Music Player: MP3, ACC, ACC+, e-AAC+ formats with Bang & Olufsen digital power amp
  • Java Games:
  • Ringtones: 64-voice polyphonic ringtones, MP3 ringtones
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0, TV-Out
  • Memory:60 MB user memory, micro SD™ External memory
  • Messaging: SMS, EMS, MMS, Email
  • Internet: WAP 2.0, GPRS Class 10, EDGE
  • Talk Time: Up to 4 hours
  • Standby: Up to 270 hours
  • Operating Frequency: Quad band (GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz)
  • Size: 103 x 49 x 11 mm
  • Weight: 81g

Ive had my U600 for 3 days and absolutely love it. Its my first Samsung as Im usually a Motorola user. The U600 is a sexy smooth phone - the slider is ace - far better than flip style. The only grumble I have is the texting - the touch sensitive keys are a nightmare when deleting a letter or word - its so easy to lose the whole text !!........also no video calling. I am more thany happy with it as other functions make up for the imperfections - all in all Its a great phone and looks the dogs whatsits - buy it !!

The U600 has pretty much all the features you would expect. It looks good and is certainly very compact. The screen has impressive clarity and the colours have a wonderful depth. The camera performs generally quite well and in good outdoor light it is fair to say it is very good. The camera (including the video camera) has a tremendous amount of tweaking functions - more than can be found on some cheap digital cameras. However, whilst some of these are just gimmicky, some do really help produce decent photos. Unfortunately, despite the camera, the screen performance and the looks, this is otherwise a poor to mediocre phone. Texting is a time-consuming chore, due to a strange logic the phone is riddled with. There's no quick access to change ringing profile - you've got to go through the sub-menus to change tone, volume etc. Text alerts can only either vibrate or tone, not both. The phone looks good but at the sacrifice of it feeling flimsy and being difficult to hol d confidently while using the buttons, keys etc. (though it is fine to hold during conversation). And yes even after many weeks of using the phone it is easy to accidently ring someone using the touch-sensitive keys. The battery life is very poor. Make just a couple of 20 minute calls and send a few texts and you'll be charging it every night. The battery meter is dangerously misleading too. This phone frustrates more than it pleases. Apart from the camera, the screen quality and the expandable memory, it's no better than the slim phones from several years ago (e.g. the Motorolas and SE's). Roll on contract renewal time...

It will be interesting to see how durable it is as it seems flimsy. I bought a headphone adapter only to find it works with the MP3, but not the radio. The problem appears to be that the radio needs the headphone lead as the aerial, and for some reason it cannot do this with the adapter (at least the one I have). If anyone knows of an adapter that works with the radio, please post. Still a good phone, despite the touch keys, which you can adapt to.

I have just switched to the Samsung U600 after years of using only Nokia phones, so have struggled a little with the menu architecture...however...I love it! Its light, easy to use, and looks so damn good! Everyone who sees it comments on the size of the screen and clarity of the picture etc. I agree with the comments made previously about the touch sensitive buttons...I wouldn't have them through choice, and I believe that these days, phones shouldn't go out without the full complement of memory they can possibly use on board ready loaded (though I accept that doesn't give the manufacturers much room to add value to their margin). Overall...a great phone!

Sexy looking phone and perfect size, but! Touch sensitive buttons have you inadvertently making calls ETC. When you try and cancel the call you have to unlock the phone first!? Crazy! Texting will raise your blood pressure too! Can anyone find parenthisis marks? Touch sensitive buttons mean you often exit the input screen. The phone does often save a draft message, but I ended up with three drafts of the same message. It took ages with the unintuitive predictive text to send one message. I'm no text fiend but have been using this facility in mobiles for 10-12 years. I've never come across anything like it! Securing the phone - stressful. If you are like me and are concerned about loosing the phone and someone calling the other side of the planet at your expense, you will want a phone lock. The only way to do this on the U600 is enabling the Privacy settings. Unfortunately the password is subsequently requested as you switch between functions, so you end up entering it dozens of times. VERY annoying! Why on Earth didn't they just have a lock that requires the password just when you first open the slider? If it then locks when the slider is shut, or the phone is left untouched for a preset time, that would have been simple (like my old Nokia). The tuner works well and the sound is great. With sufficient memory you could store a good few tracks, but the supplied earphones fall out of your ears in seconds whilst walking along and the maximum you can expand th ememory is 2Gb. Why don't these MP3 phones have a 3.5mm jack socket so you can use your own head phones? This could either be in the supplied lead which has the microphone/aerial, or keep it simple, put it in the body of the phone!? Supporting SD would enable *Gb of storage, but why can't MP3 badged phones actually have a decent bit of memory built in? The manual is basic and doesn't fully explain the units functions, so it's trial and error time. I wanted a simple phone to make calls and to listen to the odd bit of music, but this phone ergonimically speaking is the absolute "dunce" of the class! I'm going to change it for something that is less exciting to look at, but is straightforward to use. Rant over, but do yourself a favour and give this thing a wide berth.

Purchased the U600 yesterday, prior to choosing i had looked through all the reviews here, i made the choice. ok, its really slim, it looks slim from the pictures, but when u hold it, its thinner! The camera is superb, better than certain digital cameras which, when uploaded onto the computer via samsung pc studio, fill the monitior near enough and look outstanding, downside is when you take the shot, it takes it about 3 seconds so quick moving objects are somewhat hard 2 capture. Mp3 player quality through the loudspeaker is immense, its so loud, yet brillient clarity. matches walkman phones. Everything else on the phone is amazing. Just one problem. Could anyone help me with this? I have a 2gb memory card for it which is inserted into the phone. When i try to put more music on the phone it reads insufficient memory, could anyone please help it would be much appreciated. I would more than recommend this phone to anyone whos look for features and style together. p.s don't listen to the people that say the touch screen keys are rubbish, because that isn't true. only takes 10minutes getting used to them.

Good phone. But is it just me, I find it glitchy in the following: 1) Ring option: I have set it at "Ring and Vibrate", it will somehow switch itself to "Ring THEN Vibrate". It happened more than once. 2) When people SMS me, their names won't show up, just their numbers, I have to re-save all those numbers (from my sim) to have it working properly. 3) How do you get rid of that annoying "beep" when you press a "non-functioning" key? (e.g. When you are in the "Message" menu, highlighting "Inbox" and try pressing either left or right, it will have this stupid sound) Oh yeah and the touch sensitive buttons are annoying. Anyone debating whether or not to get this phone will be reading these reviews looking for their answer and it’s exactly what I did before I got the U600. If you haven't used touch buttons before then it’s something that takes getting used to but the U600 Touch buttons are a lot less sensitive than say the E900. The display is unbelievably sharp adding to the overall style of the phone. Nothing bad I have read in these reviews has been true for me and the U600 is an outstanding handset. Samsung have improved all that was wrong with the E900 making it a well rounded phone. I've found nothing much wrong with the phone apart from the battery but for the world’s slimmest phone what do you expect and I would say it has a average life of about 3 days without bluetooth on 24/7. So if your sitting there thinking, 'well I dunno', I would definitely buy this phone as it wont disappoint.

I've just upgraded to this phone from a Samsung Z500 on Vodafone. I must say it has taken a few days of intense playing to get used to it. My complaints are as follows: 1.Touch sensitive buttons are extremely sensitive! My hands are v.small and it's an effort even for me to not hit these buttons by accident. 2. Predictive texting is differcult - each word brings up a mini menu & if you're not quick enough to choose the desired word, you have to delete the automatically chosen word & start again. Also, to choose your desired word from the mini menu, sometimes you have scroll up & sometimes down. You can't be distracted when texting! 3. You can't save birthdays or addresses in your contacts menu. 4. Can't turn 3G off to save battery life 5. battery dies quickly - particularly when playing games 6.Photo time delay between pressing the button & the photo being taken- results in blury pics 7. alarm doesn't work when the phone is switched off (it does on Nokia's) 8. Web browsing text is tiny 9. Can't change background text colour - stuck with yuck orange It's the little things that are annoying! However, what I do like about this phone is: It's styling - it looks fantastic! It's small & light Good quality camera 3.2meg PC suite is easy to use and sync with outlook Loud ring (z500 was v.quite) Menu is easy to use Personally, I think Nokia still make the best phones - however they are just too chunky for my liking. As for the U600 - think twice about buying it if you are technologicaly-challenged &/or have big fingers! My advice - try before you buy. I give this phone a 3 - simply because it could be a lot better!

Clearly a winner, a top class phone with excellent camera and high resolution video. The design of U600 is awesome, may be the best in 2007.

why does not Samsung improve on the outlook sync. In Nokia phones I have full address and phone numbers. I can sync birthdates that go back to any year in the past, on Samsungs not possible before 1971. The antenna must be very week as reception in areas with bad coverage keeps braking up. This must be the worst phone in problematic areas. This is the case with all D and E phones. the best phone antenna is in the cheapest Motorolla F3

This is the first phone I have had with touch sensitive keys and they are a real pain. In general I find the phone a bit over complicated and the calendar lacking compared to that on a Motorola. The camera shutter speed is extremely slow and you or your subject will have moved before you have taken the shot. Linking the phone to your pc only adds to the disappointment it is very poor. Samson need to look at how other phone manufactures have improved their pc inter action. The jury is still out whether I keep this phone or not, I have seven days left before I’m committed to keep it for the next 18 months. I will be looking at other phones during this period.

The U600 is a good phone apart from my screen has leaked, I have had the phone a month and today i went to look at a text and my screen is black with just the right corner normal. As you can imagine im not impressed im trying to get the phone provider to fix it but they are trying to pass the book asking me if i have dropped it which i haven't why would i, but try telling them that. Apart from this the phone is good just hope i can get a new one.

Had this phone a month now, tis a great looking bit of kit but like others I tend to call people without realising it & the most annoying thing is when the phone is in silent mode the alarm goes off in silent too! Doh.

omg fantastic- had the d900, brill, but nothing compared to the u600- buy 1 if ur gonna use 1. the camera- plenty of other fones u cud by instead 2. radio- again just an add on 3. mp3- cud u use a poly ring tone?? very flash fone- attracts alot of attention, very very slim. touch sensitive keys are great for me, but my sister and sum of my mates cant grasp it and cant activate the keys or touch them soft enough- a bit of a flaw but if u dont mind then that is a great feature- if u really dont want touch sensitive keys then buy the d900!

excellent phone yes a little flimsy when open but if you want sturdyness of a brick then go for the sony ericson k800 !!!!! this is half the size half the weight looks much better and in my vuew is the best new phone on market for ages. the camera is spot on yes little delay taking a photo but the quality of your pic is worth that half a second auto focus delay. i dont find the touch sensative buttoms a problem at al so those that do must be a bit heavy handed or should take there gloves off.the battery life is also very good for the size of it your never going to get a week out of a tiny battery like this one but i would say im a heavy user and mine lasts 2 days easy. all in all if your looking for a modern flashy new phone that punches above its weight this has to be the one would give it ten out of ten but will have to settle for 5 out of 5

** RE: Reviewed by Dan from Uk on 9th May 2007** I also have this problem with the text messages, it is very frustrating. every time i use the predictive texting it 'freezes' and the phone restarts itself, sometimes a few lines down, and sometimes after one word. very annoying. ive discovered using the old fashioned style texting works fine, messaging takes ages though and i dont know if i want to put up with this... despite that, i love the phone and want get it replaced - but not with the same model if the same fault occurs. . has anyone else had this problem??

Was a little aprehensive moving away from my familiar Nokia phones of the past. I was looking for a phone that was sleek slim and cutting edge. I have had my U600 for around a month now. I found the menu relatively easy to navigate around (it has to be because the instruction manual is very vague) and you can customise the menu appearance. The battery initially seemed useless as it was flat in no time but the more you use and recharge it the better the performance becomes. The touch sensitive key pad is again something I had to get used to but now I am fine with it, I find it responsive but not over sensitive. I also like the size of the fonts which are large and easy to read. The camera is great and easy to use too. I really do not use my phone for anything other than a phone and the odd snapshot so have no comment on the other features. There are one or two minor dislikes, for instance the call register, it records every call you make so if you call the same number a dozen times it will show a dozen records of that number, some may find that a plus but for me it is cluttering the log. Another personal dislike is the bluetooth options, I like to wear bluetooth headset when driving and have been used to being able to set the device to answer incoming calls automatically in the past, this feature is not an option with the U600. All in all I am extremely pleased with my U600 and hope it is going to continue to give good service over the next 18 months. A phone I really like and would highly reccommend.
