Samsung U600
Product Rating
Samsung U600 ReviewRating: Date: 02/06/2007 The Samsung U600 is the slimmest slide phone in the world. At just 10.9 mm thickness, it's almost as slim as an iPod, and more compact. Yet inside you'll find a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash and a high quality MP3 player. The onboard memory is 60 Mbytes, which is enough to hold a dozen or so songs, but you can expand the memory to 2 Gbytes with a cheap microSD memory card. You'll also find Bluetooth wireless connectivity, for swapping music and games with friends, or listening in wireless stereo with a Bluetooth headset. The U600 offers high quality photographic and music capabilities in a tiny package. The only thing we're not so keen on is the touch-sensitive buttons, but they do look cool! The price of the U600 has dropped substantially since launch and you can find some great deals on the net. Partly the reason for this has been the problem with the touch-sensitive buttons. Samsung seem to have learned their lesson, as their latest range of phones have conventional keypads. If you think that you can live with the touch-sensitive keys, then the U600 offers great value for money. Otherwise, we recommend that you choose the older but more user-friendly D900i, or go for the newer, more advanced G600, which has a 5 megapixel camera but is not quite as thin.
Features of the Samsung U600 include:
- Touch-sensitive keys
- Camera: 3.2 megapixels with autofocus, flash, 4 x digital zoom
- Video Camera: Video player (MPEG4, H.263, AAC), Video recording (MPEG4, H.263, AAC)
- Display: 262,144 colours / QVGA 240 x 320 / TFT LCD

- Java Games:
- Ringtones: 64-voice polyphonic ringtones, MP3 ringtones
- Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0, TV-Out
- Memory:60 MB user memory, micro SD™ External memory
- Messaging: SMS, EMS, MMS, Email
- Internet: WAP 2.0, GPRS Class 10, EDGE
- Talk Time: Up to 4 hours
- Standby: Up to 270 hours
- Operating Frequency: Quad band (GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz)
- Size: 103 x 49 x 11 mm

Reviewed by Nicola on 05/02/2010 DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE!!! Never have i experienced so many problems with anything in my life!!! I have sent this phone for repair 5 times and had 3 replacment handsets before i eventually was given the option of a new phone! Very bad echoing sound on the other end of the phone which drove my friends and family mad (as they were the only peole who could hear it) so touch sensitive, very slow, terrible battery life, dificulties with internet connetion and picture messaging, have not got one good thing to say about this phone! Hope this helps. Rating:
Reviewed by Zoe on 31/01/2010 I had this phone for 6 months and after a few months the speaker died so i couldn't hear people talking to me on the phone. also the touch pad was too sensitive so that got annoying Rating:
Reviewed by FaikByrns on 31/01/2010 The phone looks good but the quality and functionality is very poor indeed. I have had my phone for 18 months and could not get warranty coverage even though I had a charge slip. The company said I needed the original invoice. Try copying info from one contact to another; I could not do it. The quality of speakers is horrible. The software to manage the phone is far inferior to any other phone I have ever used, and this is the only phone that broke down on me. To top it off the company would not repair it even though it was under guarantee. I would never buy another Samsung phone ever again. Rating:
Reviewed by brother jamie on 29/01/2010 it looks very good, its small, but the battery is poor, the camera is slow, the mp3 player mucks up the info of albums so the order is all wrong, the touch sensitive button gets pressed accidentally a lot, headphones pull on your ears and fall out so u cant walk with them in and u cant get an alternative pair without investing in a 3.5 jack connector. its served me well over all but too many little annoyances for me to ever recommend it to anyone. Reviewed by Vikkie on 12/01/2010 DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE. I got this bought for me for a christmas present. I loved it at first but after 2 months I lost all my photos and anything saved on it. I had to send it away to get fixed. Now after 12 months it's going wrong again. When I touch any of the buttons the screen goes dark and sometimes the picture goes off altogether and I have to turn the phone off and back on again. Unfortunatly nothing can be done about it now as the warranty has expired! Rating:
Reviewed by lauren on 23/12/2009 I have had this phone for a year now. At first I thought that it was great, but as the times have progressed, I have come to dislike this phone more and more. The camera (3.2mp)is good, but very, very slow The music quality is brilliant, but takes a long time to load. The touch buttons are brilliant, great for anyone to use, as they are easy to use, and if they are too sensitive you can just turn the sensitivity down! The texting is very well set out, easy to use. Overall I think that this is a good phone, but samsung could have done better. A must have phone if you cannot decide between a touch screen or not! Thank you for taking your time to read. The batery life could be better the camera is ok but there is a lot better camera phones now. The music player is not very load at all and i used to always ring people up if i was just sitting there. The touch is very touch because if you turn the touch down you have to press it about 5 times. Rating:

Reviewed by D on 02/12/2009 At first great phone, but takes a lot of time to get used to it. The problems-1. when taking a photo it takes about five seconds to actually take it, 2. when writing a text message if u hold the clear button for more than 2 seconds it deletes the whole message. However it is a great phone once you are used to it. You can edit photos, record videos etc I lovethe phone, but when I dropped it once it strated flashing when turning on, writing a message and viewing music videos and photos. So a bit disappointing. But it is a good buy if you dont drop it. Rating:

Reviewed by Kirstie on 22/10/2009 I got the Samsung U600 (pink) about 10 months ago and I think it's a really good phone. People say the touch sensitive buttons are a pain, but it doesn't bother me that much. Some of the downsides are: * calling people accidently * the music player is really slow * the predictive text dictionary deletes all your words so you have to input them all the time * The camera's delay is too long and the shutter speed is really slow, so everything blurs most of the time Good things are: *The internet connection is really fast * It's so slim * It feels quite sturdy * 10 months and no major problems * Sound quality of the music player with the headphones is so good * The touch sensitive buttons make it really quick and easy to navigate I am going to upgrade to the Tmobile Pulse, not because I hate the Samsung, I think it's amazing, its just that it's not very flashy and with touch screen phones becoming really popular, it feels dated and unsatisfying to use. I'd give it 4 and a half out of 5 though :) Rating:

Although there are quite a few problems: The screen is very very delicate - everyone that I know with this phone (5 people) have got at least one crack in it. Obviously the touch buttons were hard to get on with at first and I did end up calling a few people by accident - but you get used to it after a while and it's fine. Also, the worst thing is about two weeks ago, I found that I was unable to hear what people who called were saying - although they could hear me. Other than that, I think the camera is pretty good, the games are quite fun, I love the look, feel and slimness of it. I really am quite sad to have to let it go as it was a brilliant phone (obviously up until I stopped being able to hear people lol) I would reccomend it, I don't think the speaker breaks on all of them - i'm the only one I know that this has happened to. it is also quite cheap at the moment and you can get it in a whole variety of colours- mines dark blue, and I kinda wish I could have got it in pink now : / lol. So, I would reccomend it. In general, it's a great great phone. Rating:

The pictures taken by the camera are okay but i have found the camera function not user friendly - maybe that's less to do with the camera and more to do with Samsungs design. The touch key on the right has remained a constant irritation- when texting, even with dainty fingers, it is always catching and deleting my last entry. That was a constant annoyance when the phone actually worked. Since day one this phone has frozen up inexplicably when in the middle of typing a text message, returning to the wall paper without saving the text i was in the middle of typing. Also dictionary appears to reset itself at this point and previously added words are no longer recognised. Recently the intermittent problem with freezing became a permanent fixture and no longer texts at all! Turns out its a common fault. The looks are stunning of course but the menus are confusing to navigate through and that lovely large screen will look shabby after a few months due to scratching. I always look after my phones and this one was no exception but the screen looks like it has been sandpapered! The LCD screen went belly up after 3 months and was repaired under warranty but the nice people at the service centre deleted all my data from the memory and also all the mobile broadband settings which I have never bothered putting back on. Why should I have to? Now 10 months after purchase the phone will not make any calls and I am consequently looking for another phone. I will not buy another samsung phone. Having said all this my wife has the same phone in pink and has had no problems with it so it may well be that I perhaps had one from a dodgy batch but nevertheless it has put me off samsung and I will spend my hard earned money on perhaps a k800i or a w980i instead. Reviewed by Geoffrey [UK] on 11/03/2009 Bought it to replace a D900 which had a cracked screen. And its not as good. First of all and most important, the ring tone is not loud enough, the D900 went to 10 volume and the U600 goes to 7 volume- thats about the difference between them. Secondly the video automatically saves when you stop recording- most irritating! the D900 had a pause/restart feature. Also the video is too dark, at least when filming indoors- and thats after playing about with all the settings [auto and incandesent] Thirdly, it wont work with a 4 gig memory card- but it doesnt say that in the literature, and nor will the sales staff tell you about it- which means that you go out and buy a memory card and then you find out that you cant use it! How dumb is that? Fourthly, it has the same fault as the D900- the central button is too easy to press and make it go online when you dont want it to [yes I know that theres an offline mode]. Fifthly, the 'contacts' button is too sensitive which means [for a right handed person] that you are forever catching it accidentally and have to reverse out of contacts. There is an adjustment for sensitivity of the buttons but the instructions dont tell you which way up they are, ie is 3 the most sensitive or the least sensitive? and it doesnt seem to make any difference anyway. Overall, I like the styling and purple colour and the fact that its even smaller that the revered D900, but its a worse phone. Disappointed. Rating:

Reviewed by sam on 10/03/2009 I got this phone in purple for christmas 2007. At first I LOVED it it was gorgeous did everything I wanted and was my favourite colour! This past year though I have had so many problems with it. First the screen cracked from the inside which I was devastated about because it was such a beautiful phone. Then one day I was out with my friends and it turned itself off. When I turned it back on, all my settings had returned to the factory settings and all my media was gone. I put all the setiings back to normal and thought that was the end of it but no, it did the same thing a few weeks later and this time, everytime I tried to change a seting, it would say saved but the setting wouldn't change! I took it back to an Orange shop and the man there was lovely. He said that they could get it fixed for me but they would have to send it off which would cost me. He very kindly suggested to me to take it to the samsung shop down the road. I did this and again the people were so kind. They repaired it for free as it was a software problem. I thought that was the end of it then but a few months later it happened again. For the last 6 months, everytime my phone turns off or runs out of battery, it wipes its own memory! It's fine as long as it doesn't turn off but as many of you know, with its terrible battery life this is not realistic. I know I could get it repaired for free each time but this would only last a few months and the samsung shop is quite far away from where I live. I am currently looking for a new phone which is very sad as I will miss my beautiful U600. My advice to anybody with this phone is try to keep its memory as clear as possible by deleting your sentbox and stuff as I think it may have been caused by the memory been too full. If I could go back I would have chosen another phone to avoid the hassle Rating:

Reviewed by TB on 07/03/2009 Samsung U600. Quite a pretty phone. I got this phone at Christmas (2008), at which I promptly put the memory card in the SIM Slot!!! Got it out, and phone worked fine afterwards. Touch buttons and normal buttons combo is quite confusing, the middle button connecting to the internet when you press it is a pain, especially when moving from other phone makes where the middle button is used to bring up the menu. Menu is fairly simple to use, with little icons for each part, and when you move over to them what each stands for comes up along the top (eg; Envelope stands for messaging, etc.). Disadvantage is how sensitive the buttons are, especially when reading a message and accidentally brushing the call key, this has happened a number of times, meaning I have called my boyfriend multiple times. Another disadvantage is the inability to cancel the sending of a message unless its the size of 3 messages, and you repeatedly press cancel from the start of sending. However, about a month of use the screen suddenly went black. I left it down for five minutes on a dry surface and went away, then came back and it was dead. I turned it off and put it on charge in a warm room for an hour, and it came back. However today, it was exposed to rain while I was shopping, and suddenly the screen reversed, all the writing was the wrong way. I turned it off, and attempted to turn it on, where it came up blank. After 10 minutes under a hand dryer the screen would turn on, but in negative, and every now and then turn black once more. Screen is still negative 2 hours later, and I am hoping it comes back!! The camera is good, apart from the slowness of it for taking pictures, but this seems to be typical of Samsung phones, judging by my sister's and my mother's Samsung phones. I got this phone with o2 Ireland, of whom I have been a customer for nearly 3 years. I had hoped for a better phone, especially after a bad experience with a Motorola. Shame to be disappointed. Reviewed by Maria on 29/01/2009 I have had the U600 for what seems like the longest 16 months of my life. I have had to have it replaced twice because of a software fault that is apparently a 'known error'. Basically, if you use predictive text, it will let you get halfway through the messange and then crash, turning it's self off and on again. Samsung are aware of this but seem to have no ability to fix it. As mentioned by other reviewers, the touch keys are far too sensitive. When you are reading a text it sometimes rings the person the text is from (potentially embarrasing!), and often on menu navigation it takes it's self off where you didn't want to go. I have my text alert set to go off every two minutes, but if you put the phone on silent it defaults back to only alerting once when you take it off silent. Sometimes, the keys start to make the zylophone noise spontaneously (who actually has it set to anything other than silent??), and when you go to turn it off it says it's already turned of f. So you have to wait for it to go away. Sometimes it won't send picture messages for no apparent reason. Sometimes it won't receive texts for no reason. My friend ordered one about 6 months after me without realising it was the same one I had been complaining about, so she rang them and they said it was just the blue ones, and her pink one would be fine, but she had all the same problems I did. After 12months they actually stopped working altogether and I had to buy a new phone before my contract was up . The signal in my house was amazing on all my previous phones and I have been with Orange or many years. This phone is different. I have to do a contortonist act to get a signal and I can be sitting in one area, where the signal has been fine, talking on the phone when the call suddenly drops. This is fine if it happens once or twice, but it is happening frequently. My friends and family are frustrated too and have been telling me to get a new phone. Now I have no choice as the touch buttons are not responding. I was typing a text, closed the screen and now none of the touch buttons are responding. I can see there are messages for me but I cannot access any of them. The numbers on the keypad work, but the call button does not so I cannot make any outgoing calls. The only reason I can answer incoming calls is because the sliding open of the handset does that automatically. Be careful if buying this phone that you do not have the same signal problem as me, and it may be worth getting the extra insurance. I didn't and now I need to get another phone. Rating:

Reviewed by Alex on 06/01/2009 this phone is a joy to use as it feels so natural in your palm and is so stylish. It also has plenty of features, great sound and picture quality. Overall its great, but i'm going to list the bad points: -touch sensitive buttons. Cool at first, but not worth the ease of use sacrifice. They are slow to respond. You cannot use them whilst wearing gloves. Deleting characters in an SMS using the touch key is very slow and cumbersome. The end call touch button constantly gets presed accidentally esp when using the right navigation pad, which is incredibly frustratibng as it exits whatever you are doing. -camera speed - incredibly slow at taking pictures so you often miss the pic you wanted -keypad lock when on a call. I reckon this is because if the pad wasnt locked you would press the touch button against your face and accidentally hang up, so this is related to the touch button problem. When the key pad is locked you cannot enter numbers e.g. to a touch tone automated line! -Speakerphone is hard to access! If you are driving for example and want to use speakerphone, you cannot select it when the call is dialling...you have to wait until it is connected! Then you have to press 'unlock', 'options', 'speaker' and then 'yes' to confirm! why do they make it so hard! -middle select button - connects to the internet by default...and you cannot change it! its unintuitive because i always press it to open the main menu, then it starts connecting which costs me money! and to add insult to injury we are not even given the ability to alter this setting :( apart from that its good :) Rating:

However, it is very suceptable to moisture. When me and a friend went camping, my U600 broke after the first night. His Sony Ericsson was fine. Later I discovered that this is a common problem with these phones. Customers were answering their phones in the rain only to discover that it had then proceeded to break within 24 hours afterwards (just light drizzle, not hammering it down). I assumed that condensation must have done mine in (when I sent it in for repair, it was returned saying it had water damage). Its a good looking phone. Reviewed by Jonny on 04/01/2009 Absolutely appauling phone. Signal strength is dreadful. Half touch-screen/half button design is just weird. Touch-screen buttons hardly work anyway - if you send a text then wish to cancel, pressing the 'cancel' touch-screen button doesn't do ANYTHING. If you try to send a text when there's no signal (which is frequent and even when there is signal it still fails half the time anyway), you have to stand with it and keep retrying until it sends the message. Otherwise, it just shoves the message in the outbox and never bothers to automatically try sending it again. Which is a whole lot of use, isn't it. I tend to like my messages to go out, not sit in my outbox for me to read for my own entertainment. Sound is too quiet (except in Speakerphone mode). Constantly accidentally makes calls to people especially if you're using the torch feature and then you realise that you've been holding the phone in a way that has made you touch the 'call' touch-button, and it's called your latest contact at 4 o clock in the morning and they've heard nothing but you talking to the cat. Quite difficult to take out of your pocket without it answering itself before you've even had a chance to see who it is - sliding the phone open automatically answers the call by default and it inevitably slides open as you pull it out of your pocket; you can change this however by making it so you have to slide, press unlock, then press 'answer' (nice and long-winded); but then even this doesn't work because if you pull it out of your pocket and accidentally press one of the side-buttons then it answers the phone for some reason. Which renders the 'unlock' feature completely obsolete, which is fantastic design. Oh and then if you want to put speakerphone on you have to press 'unlock', 'speakerphone', 'yes', by which time the person on the other end has hung up. Camera takes FOREVER to take a picture, so your subject has moved by the time the shutter has actually gone, and the freeze-frame that shows when you depress the shutter button is not the freeze-frame you get in the actual photograph, so that's pointless also. Predictive text remembers about seven words. Adding punctuation to the end of long words is irritating because to look at all the options you have to wait for the word to scroll past each time so you can see what punctuation you're putting at the end. Just generally a really, really slow and badly-designed phone. The only good thing is the video camera, which has a high frame rate, and it looks quite nice. But that's it. Rating:

Reviewed by fiona on 31/12/2008 I completely agree with vincenzo. What on earth is that MEMEME person saying?! I am not an idiot, it is clearly this phone that is idiotic and phones people all the time randomly with a slight touch. It also hangs up so easily because the touch button is so close to your head! I've unfortunately been stuck with this horrible phone for 18 months now. Stupidly got it on contract, even though a woman came into the shop at the time I was signing the contract and told me not to get it... I should have listened! The battery life is horrible, signal is also bad (it is NOT the network, it's the phone). the camera is AWFUL! you have to hold it so still and make sure no one moves otherwise it is completely fuzzy (even when the "flash" is on). It also crashes all the time (even though I have hardly anything on the thing), I phoned up orange to complain about this and they replied that it was just a problem with the phone in general and they could not do anything about it... Thankfully my contract is up and I can get a new phone. Which is lucky because the arial on the phone has decided to not work anymore AT ALL! I don't understand why this phone has been listed as excellent. It is far from it. I know if you want to buy this phone and you look on here, you will ignore all the bad comments and just look at the good cause you really want the phone... but dont!!! It kills me to even give this one star, it deserves none! Rating:

I wish I still had my sony as this has been nothing but bother. The touch keys are a huge pain, writing text messages is a nightmare (coming from one who is a text-aholic), predictive text doesn't really work. Adding a recipient before you write the text is a chore, the recent contacts list is a good idea in theory, not in practice.. The menus seem overly complicated and it's easy to get lost in there. Today I got an error message when trying to reply to a text saying SMS (SIM) message memory full. Deleted everything off the phone and SIM - oh by the way if anyone knows how to get it to save texts on the internal memory please please please give me a shout out. So my advice would be, if you fancy something that looks good and you just want to make calls with, then get it. Otherwise just say no! Rating:

The touch sensitive buttons are a nightmare, they delete stuff if you hover anywhere near them, and sometimes when you're actually using them they do not work. My phone has also decided in the last few months to keep turning itself off, usually when in the process of sending a message, subsequently that whole message is then lost and you have to re-type it. Despite taking great care of my phone the screen is now cracked in two places which makes me think it isnt very strong. The amount of times you'll try to type a message or select something from the menu to have it suddenly disappear because your thumb went slightly too near the 'touch sensitive buttons' is increasingly annoying and will result in you starting to hate this phone. Its not terrible Ive seen far worse, it's just annoying Rating:

The next week we both had down loaded music onto our phones. The music player only let me have 5 songs on it all the rest had to go on my memory card on a different section which is rubbish and when i had about 40 songs on it the phone decided to not let me open the songs and changed and the names to some kind of chineese writting, my brothers was fine. And now nearly a year later i dont have any music on my phone and my brother 100's of songs. I dont recomend this phone to music lovers. But the camera is very good. Also if you set the backgroud to big ben, pretty cool because it will have a blue sky in the picture if you have signal and grey clouds if not, i thought that was quite cool. Also the touch screen buttons VERY ANNOYING ! - t hey sometimes dont work or take ages to react. But getting a new phone for christmas, either the LG viewty or LG cookie, cant deicide, any help ?? You get used to all the annoying bits I guess, but not worth choosing if you don't have to. Predictive texting software is frustrating as it takes ages to choose words and you can't delete or change words easily. I'm often accidentally calling people just by holding the phone if the slide is open, as it dials last contacts if your finger just rests for a second on the dial button. Camera is ok, but very hard to get clear pics because of the long delay - even when you're taking photos of people posing and sitting still - they have to sit completely still for about 3/4 seconds if you want focus. Landscapes are ok...! The top row of number keys is also much too close to the top half of the phone when slid open making it a bit fiddly - and the number keys are temperemental and not responsive enough. But the most annoying thing about this phone is that you can't use it if you're wearing gloves, as the touch keys respond to heat from direct skin contact - very bad in winter! Rating:

Firstly it tends to freeze a lot mid text and then takes about a min to turn itself off and restart. Once it has done this once it does it for a few hours and then it is fine....until it does it again. It has also frozen on me mid call a couple of times. When this happen the only way to get it to work again is to take the battery out and turn it back on. Another problem i have found is that the numbers in my phone book randomly change to strange symbols and parts of the number disappears. I then have to delete it and add the contact again. I also find that the camera takes a long time to capture a picture.....sometimes it can be up to 20 secs. The screen gets scratched really easily. The battery lasts a max of two days and I only use it to text and call, nothing else. So if you want to play games, pictures, internet then you will have to charge the battery everyday... However it is a very nice looking phone and it is very user friendly. I find the touch screen easy to use but i haev small hands so people with bigger hands may find it more difficult to use. Touch keys did take a bit of getting used to, but I have small hands, so I got on with this phone quite easily. I've had this phone for about 16 months, and only have 2 gripes. 1 is that the camera takes an awfully long time to take a photo. 2 is that in the last month, it has started to crash with the predictive texting, as the other reviews here comment on. I only had a 12 month contract, so went on to PAYG, since got another contract phone now - a Samsung Tocco. The U600 was my first Samsung phone, and I loved it. However, if my Tocco phone has problems (as I've read in other reviews) I'm afraid it will be my last Samsung phone. Shame, as some Samsung phones look stunning! Rating:
Reviewed by Gill on 04/10/2008 The Samsung U600 has really put me off Samsung for life. Before buying, check with your phone provider about the manufacturers fault on every phone. My phone constantly kept crashing, turning itself off mid call or freezing when I had to actually take out the battery so I could switch it off and on again. After a phone call to Orange, they confirmed there was actually a manufacturers fault on the phone that caused by the predictive text. Using the predictive text causes a fault on the phone and therefore it crashes. I asked how to sort this out and was told that I would need to contact Samsung which I did. They subsequently told me that there was a fault on the U600 that they hoped to iron out and new software would be sent to users. Three months later I called back and they still hadn't found a fix for the error. I was reduced to inputting text manually instead of having the ability to predict. Other faults is if you hover over the call button you call people/send texts which you may not want to text at that point. The phone is lovely for the image conscious, its slim, fits into a back pocket. But because of the manufacturing fault they SHOULD NOT BE SELLING THESE PHONES WITHOUT MAKING THE BUYER AWARE! Its a shame - it could have been a great phone... Samsung have really let themselves down but more than that, they've let their customers down. I wont be buying a Samsung again because of their complete lack of care for their customer. Rating:

BUT after roughly 11 months the screen picture started to go back to front and turn itself off. Fair enough the phone has had a large amount of wear and tear.. being dropped etc etc. So i could understand why it wasn't working correctly. After a phone call to Orange we were told to send it to a shop which specialises in repairing Samsung phones.. Only to find they couldn't repair it. So my next stop was calling Sansung to ask them to repair for me, who wouldn't believe that it was broken and wanted a letter confirming the company "FoneFix" could not fix it. After roughly a dozen phone calls (maybe more) and being fobbed off from person to person as none of them supposedly had a clue. I decided to get my dad to call Head Office who were extremely apologetic and have now decided to send me a new *FREE* U900, which i am very pleased to recieve, whether it turns up or not is another matter. Quite a number of times I've accidentally dialed someone while reading their text. Then you've got to quickly hang-up before the call is connected. Furthermore, the non-touch sensitive buttons are so numb that typing in a phone number can be a real chore. DO NOT BUY. Rating:
Reviewed by havok2k on 09/09/2008 Camera is quite good, so no complaints about it, sound quality is also good. Extremely sensible keys may take a while to get used to it, not a big pain. Slow when changing tracks on the microSD, so as a player, despite the sound quality, may be a drawback (I personally hate that). Pairing a bluetooth headset is a pain: not because of the process itself, but due to the fact that the phone doesn't swap automatically the profile to phone headset from stereo a2dp profile, resulting in a very poor quality of sound for answering a call while it's in use. Other big drawback is that you cant do anithing else while playing music, not even check your contact list or what so ever. And finally a poor quality antena for signal, resulting in bad sound quality calls or hang ups. So in brief, average functionality for what is expected of a good looking device. My recommendation, get if you can't afford a device with better features. Rating:

Reviewed by RoXX0rz on 04/09/2008 So I bought this phone about a week ago now. The touch sensitive buttons were hard to get used to, but overall I think it's a real nice and quite easy phone to use when you get the hang of it. It has some amazing features, the camera and recording abilities being one - and with a 3.2 mega pixel picture, the quality is just superb. Included with that, you can have an optional flash for taking pics and you can have the flash on when recording a video if it's a little dark where you are. The phone comes standard with 64Mb memory which is expandable with a MicroSD (lucky I had one from my old phone and all my pics on it!) which can expand the memory up to an amazing 2.64Gb for a mobile phone. Storing pictures, music and long videos with this phone is a breeze. Texting is quite easy when you get the hang of the keys, it always takes me time with new phones to get used to texting with them, but overall, texting is really good and I'm just as fast on it as with other mobile phones I've had. Call quality on the Samsung u600 is reasonable. I wouldn't say it's the best, for it's not. But overall this phone's compact, small, and easy to use with some high tech inside it. Oh yeah, Samsung u600 can connect to your PC to store music directly from your media player! A few bad points about it, though: --- Very short battery life from my experience, it has to be charged EVERY day if you hope to have it on. (I'm used with mobiles lasting 2 - 3 days, ofcourse I do text and use the cam a lot so it may differ with different usage.) --- Tones you record cannot be used as a ringtone or message alert tone. You will have to download them. --- Although, I've previously said the touch sensitive keys can be got used to, it does take some time, and until that, you will end up calling people by accident! --- There could have been more background designs for the phone's menu, but there isn't. This isn't to say you can't set your own pictures as a display, for you can. So, if you're willing to look over some minor little problems with the Samsung u600, you will have a really nice little compact phone with some great features. 4/5 from me, great mobile phone. You think you have sent it when you have not. This is a major issue to me - The calender looks good but you cannot programe an event and ask the phone to remind you of that event.Orange have put something on my phone to help with this but you cannot have an audible alarm to remind you - the camera takes ages to snap the pictures so your subject has often left the frame or stopped smiling.I dont think the quality is that good either. - with the touch screen it is very easy to accidentally ring someone - the music player is quite good but once you leave the player the music stops so you cant text and listen to music at the same time - The headphones broke within days of arriving, you need an adaptor to use ordinary better quality headphones. - when you ring someone the phone number does not come up on the screen alongside their name so if they have a couple of numbers you dont know which number you are using This phone does have some good features but I will not be buying another Samsung phone as I find it very frustrating Hope this helps Rating:

I am not a heavy phone user, but when I do use I find it irritating. The main thing with it is the touch buttons. If you are writing a text message and accidentally press the /c button it will only allow you to save to drafts or exit. Which means you have to save and refind your message. There is no way to save shots taken on the camera directly to the memory card. The connectivity is terrible, without my usb cable there is really no way to get a photo off the phone other than email, at which point it automatically resizes the image. I gave up with the inphone internet browser after a while and stuck to using Opera mobile instead which worked a little better. I did manage to get Google Maps and Mail working on the phone though, even if they are under Java / Games for some reason. Plus the up on my main button is broken so I cannot go up, just down and loop back around. It does have weight on it's side. This phone is tiny and you almost don't notice it in your pocket. Reviewed by edna on 15/07/2008 Utterly useless phone, mainly for software reasons. The touch-sensitive keys were fine, but everything else drove me to distraction so I gave up after a month and went back to my brilliant K810i. Messages are a nightmare, because just selecting an alternative word/spelling is a minefield. One touch of the wrong key and you're pulled out so you tend to lose the message or have to dig it out of drafts. Once the batteries warn you they're dying you've got (literally) about 30 minutes on standby before it's all over. 3-5 seconds to start playing an MP3 made it incredibly frustrating after a while. Radio reception is awful. Can't play music/radio whilst doing anything else without faffing about with about 5 careful key presses. Don't buy! Rating:

By the way, the phone sounds very bad due to the ridiculous loudspeaker. Of course, there's no how to match a nice speaker with a slim design like this, there's no miracle. So please don't claim about the sound, because the sound is BAD. The phone is also very slow when you're dealing with any kind of heavy task, like taking a picture. Seems that the hardware is not enough for the whole features. The touch keys are also bad, I hate it. In the overall point of view, this phone is very nice, looks beaultiful, but is not very usable for the day-by-day, as it is extremmely fragile. Reviewed by Vicki on 15/07/2008 I have the purple version of the U600 and am now on my 3rd handset...and it's honestly the worst phone I've ever had (and I have always loved Samsungs). It looks good, but that's it. Here are some of the problems: 1. Camera 'fails' and will only work when there is nothing else on the phone (no photos, music, texts). 2. Text messsages 'fail' and there is no way to read them. 3. Alarms rename themselves as very random things indeed (think the best one was 'if you want to extend the rights to this then you need to buy a key'. Also sets alarms for you at times like 254:35. 4. Switches off frequently of its own accord, and the only way to turn it back on is remove the battery - and every time you remove the battery it resets the phone to factory settings and wipes everything. 5. Trying to copy from the memory card to the phone 'fails' so cannot use any of my stored photos or music as ringtones, backgrounds etc. And the list goes on! I have persevered with this phone because it actually became quite amusing finding out what my alarms are called each day. Each handset I have had seems to have more faults than the last. I desperately wanted to like this phone...but now it's just annoying. My advice is - DON'T GET THE U600. Rating:

A slight knock cracked the screen and had to be sent away for repair (insured luckily). Got it back and four days later it got covered in water by accident on a kitchen worktop and despite drying it out for a week the keypad, camera and ring don't work. It goes back again for repair on Monday. Maybe it's just bad luck or clumsiness but the phone doesn't seem to be that robust and I have serious concerns whether it'll last. That said, when it is working it is a slick phone. Music Player is good but get a Micro SD card or you'll be limited to 10 tunes or so. For me, the jury's still out. Rating:

The large screen quite surprised me, good colours, good definition. The touch sensitive buttons did take a bit of getting used to, but no big deal.I arent no phone whizz but I found it a nice phone to learn with, to gradually work things out. The 3.2 megapixel camera takes great photos, though its not something I use that much as I have a very good digital camera, but, I can see why it would appeal to lots of folk. Battery life hasnt been an issue either, I notice on some reviews here it has been commented on, perhaps its because we all use phones to varying degress and extents, mine seems fine. I was a bit disapointed with the ear phones connector, expecting the small 2.5 jack that independant ear phone manafacturers use, rather than the exclusive samsung connector, but then again, seems sony and nokia have done the same, bad idea really as far as I am concerned.I was impressed however with the sound quality of mp3 on the device, okay, totally artifical and typically plastic sound of portable devices, but not heard one quite as good as the u600. Camera and video quality is amazing; camera is slightly slow to take a picture, but you can take a multi-picture to speed things up. Very lightweight and thin, touch-pad isn't badly sensitive, and that's on the maximum setting, so you should be fine with it. Mp3 player is good, speaker can play quite loudly. Comes with 60mb memory, which isn't the highest, but you can pick up a 1gb memory card for a fiver, or a 2gb memory card for £6 at play.com. Reviewed by Nikki on 02/07/2008 I hate this phone! It looks lovely - nice and thin and elegant, but is a right pain to use. Every time you type a number it automatically changes all the following text to capitals - I asked about it in the shop and they admitted it was a design fault. It is difficult to use the predictive text - logical words sometimes need to be added manually as are not in the dictionary, and sometimes you have to scroll up to find it, other times down... The screen picks up all finger marks so you constantly have to wipe it to keep it looking nice. There is limited choice for picture screensavers so it gets really boring looking at a picture of London all the time - you would need to download your own to make it more interesting - all other phones I have owned come with a variety. The camera has a long delay between pressing the button and it taking the picture - although it's a 3.2mp, it appears to blur all my pictures or take them with a weird pink tinge! (This could be me not having got to grips with the camera, but on all other phones I have never had a problem). I made the mistake of swapping from Sony Ericsson phones to this Samsung one as I love the way it looks - but I do regret this. The touch sensitive buttons took a while to get used to but are okay once you get the hang of them. It does make using the phone a bit slow sometimes and if you want to access something quickly you often make mistakes. The camera is good quality but i NEVER use it anymore, due to the fact that it literally takes 5 seconds or more to take the picture, which is pretty impossible when wanted to quickly snap pictures of people, and often means the photos come out blurry because your hand moves. The memory without a memory card is also quite poor. Can't really mention much about the music as i didnt use the music player much, but its not very well set out compared to sony ericsons, and is not as easy to use, but then it isnt a walkman phone. I think that the funniest problem with this phone is that when you add someone to your address book it automatically selects Capitals for the first letter (which is fine!), however, if you were searching for "Mum" it wouldn't find "mum" (lower case) and yet that is the pre-programmed way it carries out a search. Reviewed by Pablo Toledo on 26/05/2008 samsung u600-my 2 cents I have many mixed feelings about this phone. I have had the U600 for about a year and I love it and hate it at the same time. Here are my gripes (and praises) in no particular order. Some of these are, in my view, serious bugs/design flaws. Others are just my own personal gripes. Like all phone reviews, please take it with a pinch of salt. ***crashes*** -in certain situations (I haven't yet worked out exactly), sending a text will result in a crash and reboot. -calls randomly drop after extended periods (30 minutes and up) ***media player bugs*** -wont read id32 tags in MP3 files -if id31 tag not included, the mp3 will not be listed/visible under the music player -sort order of tracks incorrect. The media player uses the embedded id3 track number field, but only uses the first digit. Hence tracks 10-19, 20-29 get listed before tracks 1-9. very annoying! -tracks with filenames over 64 characters not listed under music player. ***missed calls*** -if you get a missed call, and exit the popup. Then you get a text and exit that, the missed call popup comes up again! This can be quite confusing, fooling you into thinking you have a new missed call. ***other naggy issues/bad design*** -keypad tones uncustomizable, and annoying. Either you suffer the loud, obtrusive keypad tones or turn them off NOTE keeping them on could actually represent a security risk also. Each number has a unique tone, hence if you key in your password with the keypad tones active, it is reasonably easy to guess what password is being input just by listening. (probably this is just nit-picking, but still bad design. Imagine if keypads at ATMs did this!) -touch sensitive buttons very easy to activate while you are using the phone (e.g texting), which often results in accidentally dialling numbers, despite the most careful use. -poor shortcut customization. The u600 has very limited customization abilities. Users can customize the 4-way arrow pad, and there are 5 slots for "user shortcuts" on the up-arrow, but thats it. The select button cannot be changed from launching the browser, which again can often result in accidentally launching the internet browser -No ringer profiles, just on or off! -camera is ok, but slow to respond, and the user interface isn't clear or obvious. -a little fragile. I am very careful with my phones, and keep them in a case most of the time. However, the one time I dropped this phone (on a tiled floor from a height of about 1 metre), it broke. The GPRS stopped functioning, and also the ability to send/receive text messages. Hardly what I would call solid construction. all these bugs/gripes present in firmware version XXGK2 (Dec 2007, I think) ***positives*** -despite my many misgivings about this phone, there are some positives too. Here they are in no particular order -lovely user interface (despite poor customization). The icons are a work of art, and the speed/response of navigation is excellent -the touch sensitive buttons are also a pleasure to use (except when you call someone by mistake), and add to the general speed/responsiveness of the phone -aesthetically a very pleasing device, with excellent screen quality/resolution -ergonomically also very pleasing, feels solidly built -call quality good So that is my brief low-down on the U600. After a year with this phone, and having tried both Motorollas and Samsungs, I am going back to the tried and tested Nokia. Every user expects different things from their phone - for me, I have only ever wanted a solid, well build phone that is fast, responsive and handles the basics well. I never was too bothered about MP3 players, internet, cameras, and what tends to be lumped together as "bells and whistles". But ultimately you have to decide if it works for you. Rating:

Would definitely not recommend though and I can't wait for my contract to be up so that I can go back to Nokia. Firstly the key pad is much too sensitive, meaning I've accidentally cancelled calls when on the phone, phoned people who've texted me, and others that I wasn't trying to call, just because my fingers skimmed the buttons! After about two months I was also no longer to use predictive text as the phone would crash and reset itself every time, meaning I'd lose my message. Apparently it's a common problem with this model. The predictive text is strange anyway, if you want an apostrophe, you need to go into another menu and scroll around, which takes far too long. Battery life is also poor and I have to charge it every night. The good points are a good alarm clock and you can easily transfer info to your computer using the USB cable. I'd still suggest sticking with Nokia though! Rating:

The battery so far is great - I've had it on constantly for four days, listened to the radio for two hours, made some phone calls, and it's still on two bars. Much better than my old D900. (I'm not making this up) Coming off a Sony I could not believe how fiddly it was to use, battery was terrible, touch buttons a joke. It's like Samsung put this out with testing it. Reviewed by LC on 25/03/2008 When I first got this phone, i thought I'd hit the jackpot. It's seemingly flawless appearance was easy to fall for however although it has a wide range of features, the quality of them isn't something to be proud of. Firstly as stated, the battery life is awful, as I had to charge it daily. The memory capacity was terrible as it could only hold about 10 songs and 50 pictures - I frequently had to upload the images as I am an avid photographer. Speaking of photography, the flashlight is good and the picture quality is good, however the autofocus drove me INSANE. It takes AGES to take the picture, and in the mean-time the 'Kodak moment' is gone. The touchscreen buttons weren't as bad as I thought they'd be and it took little to no time at all, to get used to them, however I did accidently call people in my phonebook by simply brushing my fingers on the keypad. But finally the one main reason why I wouldn't recommend this phone is that although it claims to be some kind of innovation in the 'slim' design, this is also a huge practicality fault. I usually take good care of my phone and the first time that this phone slid out of my pocket from about 3ft from the ground THE SCREEN CRACKED!!! It wasn't even a hard floor. I then had to wait 2 monthes for it to be repaired and then a month later it was stolen. So overall that last bit does have nothing to do with the phone, but it was a good riddance, however it was AN AWFUL WASTE OF MONEY. Rating:

Reviewed by Saint Jimmy on 13/03/2008 had this phone at xmas to replace a sony ericsson K750i. the sony had worked well, but the joy stick was sticking, the buttons becoming unresponsive, the music player was poor, and about 18mnths of school had taken their toll on it. firstly, the U600 looks great, feels good, and has a wow factor- mostly because of it's thinness (often forget it's in my pocket if it's not in a case). but there is the main limitation of battery life- 3 days max, and even thats not heavy use. next is the fancy changing display (from night to day, clouds for low signal etc). while this looks great, if you put a pic as display, the clocks are awful, and the surround is boring grey. also with the dialing display- unless it's the standard (boring compared to the others- quil, sticky notes) on loud mode you get stuck with button tones (unless volume is right down). the camera is also ishy. it takes flipping ages to work (seriously, u'll either miss most shouts, or take the best part of a min to get it), and the option interface compared to the sony's is poor. also, the quality varies randomly, from amazing, to grainy. next is the MP3 player. very good interface, but with an optional 2GB micro SD each song takes ages to load (on sony, had a 2GB car with no probs, and 4GB which caused crashing a long load times, but worth it). next, it's a pain if u use a memory card. unlike the sony, theres a seperate folder for memory card items, which is annoyin at least, and frustrating as you cant open a pic (takes long time), then move to the next without going back. it's also annoyin when linked to computer, as you can only use mass storage mode if you want to save items on memory card (but can interface with media player still, so thats good). next, the buttons. i actually find the touch buttons quite good, but can't use them with gloves on, so a pain in the cold. but the main buttons are worse, with 7 and 9 often not registering all 4 presses to get their last letters- a pain for quick texting. the menus are pretty good, and remember your last choices, and all the extras (like unit converters) are excellent. but, annoying you cant directly add birthdays to contacts, and that u cant choose manually between text and pic message. also, my phone has had a tendency to minorly crash, though nothing major (like going back to idle screen manually, not registering opening/closing the slider. overall though, i quite like this phone. it's size means it doesnt show in pockets (especially in school, or skinny jeans), and has mostly good features and softwear, and is reliable and smart (rather business looking than fashion phone- a definate plus). Reviewed by sam on 09/03/2008 I got this phone for christmas and I love it. Best phone I've ever had. People say the touch buttons are over sensitive but I find them fine, especially compared to my friends samsung (i forget which) that's touch buttons are irritating and you accidently close the menu or delete your entire text. Atleast you can't do that on the U600, you only delete one letter. The only critisicm's i have are the poor battery life but i find it lasts for days if you don't use the camera or games much and charging it everynight isn't too much hassle anyway, the time it takes for the camera to take pictures but a camera is just an accessory after all. If you want an amazing camera then buy one and finally, having the call key as a shortcut to the recent contacts was not a good idea in my eyes seeing as it's a touch button. I keep accidently calling people but it's fine as long as i remember to keep deleting my recent contacts list which is only a minor inconvinience. I wouldn't say this phone it perfect but I personally love it. I think it's more suited to more delicate females with small fingers than blokes though. I also love my double as much as its purple!!!! I love the look and the feel of this phone now that I have got used to the touch sensitive buttons. I cannot get any of my tones to work as message tones, other than the built in Samsung ones, despite the manual saying I would be able to put other sounds on there. This doesn't really bother me as I normally have my phone on silent anyway. The camera takes an absolute age to take photos. The ones it takes are very sharp and clear, but if you have to make your nephew wait 20 seconds while he poses for a photo i'm pretty sure he'll get bored and go away and you'll get a great shot of a blurry head walking away. I bought the phone at the end of September 2007 and have already had to take it in for repair in February. The phone decided that it was going to start crashing every time I pressed the space button in predictive text. I could use the hash button in any other context, or even as space in regular text but not in predictive. It came back fine, but now a couple weeks later it has stopped going down to the person's name in the phone book. So I type in TIM and press select like I used to and instead I'm sending my text to AARON, because he is at the top of the list and the phone is ignoring my request to go to T. I will be taking it back in for repair because of this. It also randomly restarts itself every now and then. Two repairs in 2 months on a phone that is only 6 months old and gets treated like a delicate egg isn't very good in my book. To be honest, although I like the phone, I don't think it's going to be a reliable one and I don't really want to spend the next year of my contract with it! Rating:

So far im really pleased with it i find it really easy to use the texting takes a while to get used to but overall its not a problem. Im well chuffed with it and if i find it easy to use it must be!!!!! Rating:
Reviewed by Jordan on 22/02/2008 Ive had this phone for about... 9ish months now, and just to let anyone who is going to buy it... DONT! it constantly crashes if it gets too hot, the music player is a joke if your using a memory card, the camera is VERY slow!!! and its just reli flimsy! i sent one back because it was crashin alot and this one does it aswell! so just to say it may be an excellent phone for some but not me! Reviewed by GirlWithAPhone=] on 21/02/2008 i like the phone. i do understand some peoples frustration with the touch keys but you do get used to it and as long as you tap the buttons they work perfectly. The camera takes about 4 seconds to take a picture but if you want a camera that bad get a real one? The problem im having is with the memory card. it doesnt seem to let me play my music or even upload it for that matter and as the phone only holds about 10 songs i thought it was important. It is wonderfully thin and compact and looks good too. when i bought mine it was 200 and now you can get it for half that at least. great value. recomended memory card though. Rating:

Reviewed by Samsung Lover on 20/02/2008 The touch sensitve buttons are a pleasure to use. Imo, some people have problems with it because they expect the buttons to have "tactile feedback." It does not have tactile feedback because you just have to tap it, not press!! The buttons are like your touchpad found in your laptop. Do you expect your touchpad to ahve tactile feedack?? Again, you just tap it, not press. The cam is kinda slow but bearable. If yoy badly want a perfect cam, then why don't just buy a digital camera? The player is great! It displays album art. Vivid message s also nice idea of veiwing the message. You don't have to scroll long sms message anymore, the phone will do it for you. Plus, you can also magnify sms messages. I have red color and it's really stunning. Radio is also nice idea. Good job samsung. I will wait for the next samsung phone that has touch sensitive buttons. I will never buy again phone with normal keys :-) Rating:
Reviewed by Hollie on 20/02/2008 Ive had this phone now for about 2 months now n i cant wait 2 get rid of it!! the touch sensitive buttons drive me crazy...the amount of times i have been reading a text n then accidently started calling the person is a joke. I then hav to quickly unlock the keypad to try and stop it before the call is connected n i have to come up with some lame story as to why ive randomly rung them. basically...accidentally brush the touch sensitive buttons and your screwed. the battery life isnt very good either....im charging it most nights, and if ive been playing music off it...it disapears even faster! Having said all that, the camera is very snazzy, but it isnt worth accidentally ringing my Uncle Chris just trying to turn it on! Rating:

Reviewed by Katherine on 19/02/2008 There have been times when I've accidentally closed something by hovering over the end call key, but there's a sensitivity option which I'm sure will fix it. I can't see any problems with it... I've been on mine non-stop since I bought it a couple of days ago, and it's battery is still two thirds full from the original charge! I love the music player, camera (with frames), the touch keys, the look and size, and especially the games! I LOVE this phone!!¬ Rating:

Reviewed by jarrod on 17/02/2008 Touch sensitive buttons!!!!! which idiot designed this phone??? Great looking phone, good features, slim and stylish..... but touch sensitive buttons are a nuisance to people who actually use mobiles more than 5times a day (unless your a lady with small fingers). The slide action is cheap wobbly too. (Doubt samsung will carry on this design, they know a bad one when they see it). Get a Nokia 6500slide instead, strong/sturdy, well made/designed..... you wont regret it. Rating:
Reviewed by Mark D on 17/02/2008 From out of the box this phone brings style, functionality, and ease of use. The 3.2 mega pixal camera is good but slow which is a problem if your looking to take pics on the move or take pics of the kids or pets. I've had the U600 for several months now and have noticed that if i get to fast for the phones menu system it software resests it self losing any text or bluetooth device which is connected at that time. I have a 2gb memory card in the phone which is equally as slow and it's not all that straight forward playing music via the player from the memory card to a single or dual stereo blutooth headphones. However i think this phone, as a basis of things to come is fantastic.. if Samsung can tweak here n there which future models and listen to what consumers want then they will definately give Nokia and Sony a run for there money. I'd like to give this phone a rating of 3.5 as it's better than good but not quite excellent! Rating:

Reviewed by Susan on 15/02/2008 Already posted a review on the U600 but just wanted to let you know that my service provider replaced the handset and within 3 hrs of the courier delivering it, the same fault happened again!! Screen froze on writing text then crashed and now turns off completely at random! I have a friend who's U600 froze and only 1/2 of the screen came back. Having had this problem since before xmas, I would have though a company as big as Samsung would have came up with a resolution now but when you e-mail them they just say take it to nearest retailer or send it direct to them for repair but Orange maintain all that is required is a software downlaod update!
