Samsung U600 Review

Rating:
Date: 02/06/2007
The Samsung U600 is the slimmest slide phone in the world. At just 10.9 mm thickness, it's almost as slim as an iPod, and more compact. Yet inside you'll find a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash and a high quality MP3 player. The onboard memory is 60 Mbytes, which is enough to hold a dozen or so songs, but you can expand the memory to 2 Gbytes with a cheap microSD memory card. You'll also find Bluetooth wireless connectivity, for swapping music and games with friends, or listening in wireless stereo with a Bluetooth headset. The U600 offers high quality photographic and music capabilities in a tiny package. The only thing we're not so keen on is the touch-sensitive buttons, but they do look cool! The price of the U600 has dropped substantially since launch and you can find some great deals on the net. Partly the reason for this has been the problem with the touch-sensitive buttons. Samsung seem to have learned their lesson, as their latest range of phones have conventional keypads. If you think that you can live with the touch-sensitive keys, then the U600 offers great value for money. Otherwise, we recommend that you choose the older but more user-friendly D900i, or go for the newer, more advanced G600, which has a 5 megapixel camera but is not quite as thin.

Features of the Samsung U600 include:

  • Touch-sensitive keys
  • Camera: 3.2 megapixels with autofocus, flash, 4 x digital zoom
  • Video Camera: Video player (MPEG4, H.263, AAC), Video recording (MPEG4, H.263, AAC)
  • Display: 262,144 colours / QVGA 240 x 320 / TFT LCD
  • Music Player: MP3, ACC, ACC+, e-AAC+ formats with Bang & Olufsen digital power amp
  • Java Games:
  • Ringtones: 64-voice polyphonic ringtones, MP3 ringtones
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0, TV-Out
  • Memory:60 MB user memory, micro SD™ External memory
  • Messaging: SMS, EMS, MMS, Email
  • Internet: WAP 2.0, GPRS Class 10, EDGE
  • Talk Time: Up to 4 hours
  • Standby: Up to 270 hours
  • Operating Frequency: Quad band (GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz)
  • Size: 103 x 49 x 11 mm
  • Weight: 81g

I have had this phone for almost a week and i love it. The camera is brilliant, the mp3 player sounds amazing. Dont know why people are moaning about the touch sensitive keys, the sensitivity can be altered, i have not managed to call anyone by mistake yet. So if your thinking about getting a u600 go for it, you will never look back. Forgot to mention mobiles24.com do games for the u600, but you will need the code to put them on your phone.

I've had it for 8 months now and on first impressions, its a good phone. But the battery runs out in a day if you text or call at a decent amount and its camera yet brilliant quality; is too slow to "capture the moment" you want. It doesn't have touch screen you idiots, its touch keys (only 4) the rest are good old fashioned buttons. However if you want a hard wearing phone don't buy this. my screen now is suddenly dying and restarting the phone, honest. Also part of its obviously broken because i switched it on and the screen display was upside down. yeah its thin but it doesn't come up to the standard of the sony Ericsson phones in durability, quality and what you get. Although the mp3 player is good the headphones are crap quality and the fm radio has crap reception and drains the battery within a few hours. don't be seduced by the slimness of the hone as other 'fatter' phones have more on them. I would recommend the k800i as it's cheaper or the slimmed down ver sion of that the k770i.

Samsung have made a hybrid, this phone's performance is good, but limited compared to the U800 and the U700 phones in the soul collection. However, saying that this phone has a good ear piece with a camrea, which is a massive 3.2 MP, okay maybe not as powerful as it's rival the Nokia 6210, but still, this phone is light weight and perfect if you want to look classy, and it's shiney, more shiney than the LG shine. The software inside the U600 is the turning point in all samsung phones, and with a Micro SD slot. There is possibly one issue with this phone, and that is, it scrathes easily!

Apart from that the camera is great, calling and texting are easy and the hardware is really easy to use. The phone looks fantastic but try too get something to protect the screen as it is quite delicate. All in all I am very happy with it

I have the purple version of the U600 and am now on my 3rd handset...and it's honestly the worst phone I've ever had (and I have always loved Samsungs). It looks good, but that's it. Here are some of the problems: 1. Camera 'fails' and will only work when there is nothing else on the phone (no photos, music, texts). 2. Text messsages 'fail' and there is no way to read them. 3. Alarms rename themselves as very random things indeed (think the best one was 'if you want to extend the rights to this then you need to buy a key'. Also sets alarms for you at times like 254:35. 4. Switches off frequently of its own accord, and the only way to turn it back on is remove the battery - and every time you remove the battery it resets the phone to factory settings and wipes everything. 5. Trying to copy from the memory card to the phone 'fails' so cannot use any of my stored photos or music as ringtones, backgrounds etc. And the list goes on! I have persevered with this phone because it actually became quite amusing finding out what my alarms are called each day. Each handset I have had seems to have more faults than the last. I desperately wanted to like this phone...but now it's just annoying. My advice is - DON'T GET THE U600.

Digital Power Amplifier (Class-D) has never been the best sounding amp, but the most energy efficient ones. By the way, the phone sounds very bad due to the ridiculous loudspeaker. Of course, there's no how to match a nice speaker with a slim design like this, there's no miracle. So please don't claim about the sound, because the sound is BAD. The phone is also very slow when you're dealing with any kind of heavy task, like taking a picture. Seems that the hardware is not enough for the whole features. The touch keys are also bad, I hate it. In the overall point of view, this phone is very nice, looks beaultiful, but is not very usable for the day-by-day, as it is extremmely fragile. From 0 to 10, I give 6 for this phone, being gentle yet...

Utterly useless phone, mainly for software reasons. The touch-sensitive keys were fine, but everything else drove me to distraction so I gave up after a month and went back to my brilliant K810i. Messages are a nightmare, because just selecting an alternative word/spelling is a minefield. One touch of the wrong key and you're pulled out so you tend to lose the message or have to dig it out of drafts. Once the batteries warn you they're dying you've got (literally) about 30 minutes on standby before it's all over. 3-5 seconds to start playing an MP3 made it incredibly frustrating after a while. Radio reception is awful. Can't play music/radio whilst doing anything else without faffing about with about 5 careful key presses. Don't buy!

I've had this phone for nearly a year now and I really can't until my contract is up! My screen actually cracked really easily in the corner from finger pressure. The touch sensitive buttons are awful and annoying. My keypad when texting sometimes decides it doesn't want to work, very annoying. I'm contantly calling people I don't want to be accident, even when I'm on the phone to somebody and my ear accidently touches the button! The camera is good but takes ages to actually take a photo and can be a bit confusing. Some ringtones are so quiet I can hardly hear them either...looking forward to a new one!

I have technically had this phone for just over a month but only had it working for about half that. A slight knock cracked the screen and had to be sent away for repair (insured luckily). Got it back and four days later it got covered in water by accident on a kitchen worktop and despite drying it out for a week the keypad, camera and ring don't work. It goes back again for repair on Monday. Maybe it's just bad luck or clumsiness but the phone doesn't seem to be that robust and I have serious concerns whether it'll last. That said, when it is working it is a slick phone. Music Player is good but get a Micro SD card or you'll be limited to 10 tunes or so. For me, the jury's still out.

Really like this phone, my daughter bought me it and I was immediately impressed by the appearance of it, the lack of buttons everywhere really worked for me. The large screen quite surprised me, good colours, good definition. The touch sensitive buttons did take a bit of getting used to, but no big deal.I arent no phone whizz but I found it a nice phone to learn with, to gradually work things out. The 3.2 megapixel camera takes great photos, though its not something I use that much as I have a very good digital camera, but, I can see why it would appeal to lots of folk. Battery life hasnt been an issue either, I notice on some reviews here it has been commented on, perhaps its because we all use phones to varying degress and extents, mine seems fine. I was a bit disapointed with the ear phones connector, expecting the small 2.5 jack that independant ear phone manafacturers use, rather than the exclusive samsung connector, but then again, seems sony and nokia have done the same, bad idea really as far as I am concerned.I was impressed however with the sound quality of mp3 on the device, okay, totally artifical and typically plastic sound of portable devices, but not heard one quite as good as the u600. All in all, I like this phone,it stands out in a crowd.

Great phone, definite improvement from my old phone. Camera and video quality is amazing; camera is slightly slow to take a picture, but you can take a multi-picture to speed things up. Very lightweight and thin, touch-pad isn't badly sensitive, and that's on the maximum setting, so you should be fine with it. Mp3 player is good, speaker can play quite loudly. Comes with 60mb memory, which isn't the highest, but you can pick up a 1gb memory card for a fiver, or a 2gb memory card for £6 at play.com. Style is great, the only problem I would say is the battery. The battery on medium usage is about 2 days, which is slightly disappointing, but considering the rest is forgivable.

I hate this phone! It looks lovely - nice and thin and elegant, but is a right pain to use. Every time you type a number it automatically changes all the following text to capitals - I asked about it in the shop and they admitted it was a design fault. It is difficult to use the predictive text - logical words sometimes need to be added manually as are not in the dictionary, and sometimes you have to scroll up to find it, other times down... The screen picks up all finger marks so you constantly have to wipe it to keep it looking nice. There is limited choice for picture screensavers so it gets really boring looking at a picture of London all the time - you would need to download your own to make it more interesting - all other phones I have owned come with a variety. The camera has a long delay between pressing the button and it taking the picture - although it's a 3.2mp, it appears to blur all my pictures or take them with a weird pink tinge! (This could be me not having got to grips with the camera, but on all other phones I have never had a problem). I made the mistake of swapping from Sony Ericsson phones to this Samsung one as I love the way it looks - but I do regret this. I am going back to Sony Ericsson as soon as can save up to buy a new phone.

This is my first non-Nokia phone, and after a few months I'm regretting breaking the tradition. In summary: - Predictive text is awful and very counter-intuitive. - Response time when pressing a touch button is far too long. - After only a few months the phone has starting switching off, then when I switch it back on all my saved photos, music, ringtones, and settings (such as vibration on/off) have been reset to default values. Oh yes, and the camera has stopped working too. My advice: steer well clear.

Had this phone for nearly a year now, the only issues I've had are the predictive text software not working and crashing the phone each time meaning I can't use it at all which is quite annoying. Other issue is that there's quite a long delay on the camera from when you press the button which can result in blurry pictures. These are the only issues I've had however, battery life is good with quite heavy use, very sturdy, I've dropped it approximately once a day since owning it (I'm very clumsy) and it's still fine, the touch sensitive buttons are fine once you get used to them (although don't work when you have gloves on which is annoying in winter!) and I find it really easy to use. Very stylish design too.

However, towards the end of my contract it has started to play up a bit. The camera has malfunctioned, giving a distorted picture; the LCD screen often "crumbles" and fades to black, forcing me to reset the phone; and the signal quality from the phone to people whom I ring has started to deteriate.

Even if i manage 2 complete the msg, there's no guarantee it'l reach the person i send it 2, it may say its sent but wil then show up in th outbox! Th battery goes from fullbars 2 zero overnight! The reception is non-existent, no matter wat sim i use in it! Also wen i try 2 open new texts it will instead bring up a tx sent by the same person wks earlier & i hav 2 delete all msgs 2 get the new msg thro..this happens even if i only hav a few msgs in the inbox so a full inbox is NOT 2 blame! I have had this phone on contract now for almost a year and i love the phone ! Last week though my thoughts have changed. The screen keeps freezing, the 'soft' buttons wont work. I now cant use the phone at all. Luckily last week when i realised the problems started i saved all pics, music, videos on to my memory card for safe keeping, glad i did coz now i cant access anything on the phone, so everything would have been lost. Having now read other peoples reviews i wish i never got this phone. I contacted my phone company to get them to exchange it as it is obviously faulty, but they wanted me to sent it back for repair. Only then when i send it back then they would dispach a 'hire' phone that i could use whilst they are repairing mine. What a load of rubbish, they should just replace it. I am now using an old phone and waiting out till the end of my contract, then going back to Pay As You Go. Cant be bothered with all the hassle. Conclusion - Great phone, looks fab, but beware of the problems a few months down the line!!!!! :)

I hate my new phone, this Samsung. The battery lasts less than half the length of time of my old Nokia, I can't see the screen in bright daylight, it keeps accidentally connecting me to the internet or ringing people when I don't want it to, the camera takes a picture about 10 seconds after I asked it to (so I have a lot of pictures of my feet) and it is so complicated I have only managed two texts on it (and one took me about 20 mins to get right). It's definitely goodbye time.

I've had this phone for a year now, and i have to say i have never had a problem with is. I am still on the original handset and it has lasted well as there are no major scratches on it considering how many times i have dropped it. The touch sensitive buttons took a while to get used to but are okay once you get the hang of them. It does make using the phone a bit slow sometimes and if you want to access something quickly you often make mistakes. The camera is good quality but i NEVER use it anymore, due to the fact that it literally takes 5 seconds or more to take the picture, which is pretty impossible when wanted to quickly snap pictures of people, and often means the photos come out blurry because your hand moves. The memory without a memory card is also quite poor. Can't really mention much about the music as i didnt use the music player much, but its not very well set out compared to sony ericsons, and is not as easy to use, but then it isnt a walkman phone. Oh yeah my battery life is rubbish, i have to charge sooo much even when i only use it to text or ring people, other peoples bttery seems ok, but mine is rubbish, i hated it. Overall its a good phone and served me well over the year (expect the camera slowness that really annoyed me). My contract runs out today though and i am hoping to get another one, simply because i like a change, finding it hard to find one that looks as stylish though.

This is one of the worst phones i have ever owned. If as much effort was spent on appearance as the function it would be good. I could go on to write reems of faults; such as poor reception compared to other phones on the same network, complicated menu selection, touch sensitive keys that allow you to hang up just by holding the phone to close to your ear, the awkward way of turning the speaker on during a call, a great camera with an the worst operating prgram and poor button location, the camera lacks the ability to just take an instant snapshot, you have to wait until the program loads up and then wait until the thing has caught up. I think that the funniest problem with this phone is that when you add someone to your address book it automatically selects Capitals for the first letter (which is fine!), however, if you were searching for "Mum" it wouldn't find "mum" (lower case) and yet that is the pre-programmed way it carries out a search. If preferred my first brick sized mobile to this one!!

samsung u600-my 2 cents I have many mixed feelings about this phone. I have had the U600 for about a year and I love it and hate it at the same time. Here are my gripes (and praises) in no particular order. Some of these are, in my view, serious bugs/design flaws. Others are just my own personal gripes. Like all phone reviews, please take it with a pinch of salt. ***crashes*** -in certain situations (I haven't yet worked out exactly), sending a text will result in a crash and reboot. -calls randomly drop after extended periods (30 minutes and up) ***media player bugs*** -wont read id32 tags in MP3 files -if id31 tag not included, the mp3 will not be listed/visible under the music player -sort order of tracks incorrect. The media player uses the embedded id3 track number field, but only uses the first digit. Hence tracks 10-19, 20-29 get listed before tracks 1-9. very annoying! -tracks with filenames over 64 characters not listed under music player. ***missed calls*** -if you get a missed call, and exit the popup. Then you get a text and exit that, the missed call popup comes up again! This can be quite confusing, fooling you into thinking you have a new missed call. ***other naggy issues/bad design*** -keypad tones uncustomizable, and annoying. Either you suffer the loud, obtrusive keypad tones or turn them off NOTE keeping them on could actually represent a security risk also. Each number has a unique tone, hence if you key in your password with the keypad tones active, it is reasonably easy to guess what password is being input just by listening. (probably this is just nit-picking, but still bad design. Imagine if keypads at ATMs did this!) -touch sensitive buttons very easy to activate while you are using the phone (e.g texting), which often results in accidentally dialling numbers, despite the most careful use. -poor shortcut customization. The u600 has very limited customization abilities. Users can customize the 4-way arrow pad, and there are 5 slots for "user shortcuts" on the up-arrow, but thats it. The select button cannot be changed from launching the browser, which again can often result in accidentally launching the internet browser -No ringer profiles, just on or off! -camera is ok, but slow to respond, and the user interface isn't clear or obvious. -a little fragile. I am very careful with my phones, and keep them in a case most of the time. However, the one time I dropped this phone (on a tiled floor from a height of about 1 metre), it broke. The GPRS stopped functioning, and also the ability to send/receive text messages. Hardly what I would call solid construction. all these bugs/gripes present in firmware version XXGK2 (Dec 2007, I think) ***positives*** -despite my many misgivings about this phone, there are some positives too. Here they are in no particular order -lovely user interface (despite poor customization). The icons are a work of art, and the speed/response of navigation is excellent -the touch sensitive buttons are also a pleasure to use (except when you call someone by mistake), and add to the general speed/responsiveness of the phone -aesthetically a very pleasing device, with excellent screen quality/resolution -ergonomically also very pleasing, feels solidly built -call quality good So that is my brief low-down on the U600. After a year with this phone, and having tried both Motorollas and Samsungs, I am going back to the tried and tested Nokia. Every user expects different things from their phone - for me, I have only ever wanted a solid, well build phone that is fast, responsive and handles the basics well. I never was too bothered about MP3 players, internet, cameras, and what tends to be lumped together as "bells and whistles". But ultimately you have to decide if it works for you.

And I've had no trouble with the touch sensitive buttons. It takes some getting used to just sliding the phone down to end calls as the buttons don't work when the phone is on call. But that might just be me. I really like this phone, had the N95 before and although it was good it was far too bulky and fussy for me.
