Reviewed by Samantha on 09/03/2010This phone is brilliant, I was in 2 minds about the Nokia 5800 or this i had the original tocco at first and loved that phone so i thought whats the harm in getting the upgraded version, after reading both reviews i saw there was more bad comments about this phone than the nokia, so i went with the nokia 5800. That phone is a piece of rubbish, very slow you HAVE to use the stick otherwise the phone is really unresponsive, not so good if you're in a rush to find something, camera isn't great nothing spectacular on there, and the main reason i got it was for wifi and maps. Which are both absolute rubbish. So I took it back and got the Tocco Ultra, I was worried at first as I put it on charge and the phone was very slow at responding and the screen stopped working for a second. This got me annoyed, there was no way I could take another phone back again. Then when it had charged I took it off to have a play, and then it worked perfectly responded well to everything, i love everything about it. You can change the font of your writing which is pretty cool as I get bored of staring at the same writing after a while. Camera amazing, I love the panorama shots you can get, and the texting is good, could be better but thats where the keypad comes in handy, only thing that i dislike about the phone is you have to slide the phone up to use the camera, and everytime am taking a picture i end up pressing the side buttons so it zooms in, but i've figured out a new way of taking pictures! The internet is good, its just as good as the original tocco so no faults there, and there are so many widgets which i like to play with, especially the stop smoking one, Genius, 5 stars from me :) Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Jeff Mills on 07/03/2010 Personally I don't like this phone. There are are few things in particular why i dislike it. The battery life is shocking, on average I have to charge it every other night. If a call lasts more than 10mins it drains the battery & so does browsing the internet. The vibrate funcution is not strong enough, i some times miss calls even when it's in my jeans pocket. For me the keypad buttons is poorly designed and too small. The camera button and the lock button are too close together. The only decent thing is the camera. Rating: ![]() ![]() Reviewed by sue durnall on 04/03/2010 i have only had this phone a couple of days so still gettin to know it.... but like it so far few teething problems but i will get their no doubt the only thing i would like to know is can u change the tx message ringtone and if so how???? look forward to an answer get me on my email address suedurnall@aol.com thanks Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Nokia User on 03/03/2010 I tested several devices looking good photo&video recorder. And this is it. Better than any Nokia, better than Omnia HD, better than Pixon12. So I sold it once because of really weak battery and after allmost 2 months of looking, bought new one. Sms writing for Nokia user can make them mad.But with T9 it works, but carefull with deleting. For me is a second device. E52 as workhorse. S8300 for multimedia. Why Nokia can't make so well balanced camera for their mobiles??? Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Darran From Leeds on 28/02/2010 This is the first touch phone that I have bought!.. The only problem that I have with it, is the Battery life. Not known anything like it. After 6 hours I need to charge the phone again! That’s without any talk time! Very, very poor battery life! HELP!!!! If the battery life was better, it would have got 4 stars! However cameras nit that good blurs a lot, editing words on messeges nearly impossible, always crashes, goes really really slow, cant use own ringing tones (on messeges) downloaded two games - thats the memory limit. looking through pictures constantly crashes, accidently tilt phone and its goes through pictures really fast, but never responds when trying to slide to the next picture. Its got nothing really interesting on it got bored within a day. when i first got the phone it wouldn't charge. Overall a Worthless phone. And definatly would not reccomend!!!!!!! Rating: ![]() Reviewed by ananomous on 24/02/2010 The battery life is shocking, mine has been back 3 times and still doesnt work correctly. this time a complete failiure of ALL the buttons and it constantly dials the number 18888. WASTE of MONEY and TIME, swapping for a more robust nokia model. Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Katrina on 21/02/2010 Oh god I am so glad other people have found this phone to be as awful as I have. The stupid event thing that comes up on the screen is so annoying and I have no idea how to get rid of it. You cant change the screen saver have to have the stupid pictures they have put on which are awful. The biggest issue for me is the battery life it is just a joke a few text messages and a couple of phone calls and the battery is drained. I'm sick of having to charge it up twice a day. This isn't always possible when I'm out . I've had this phone now for 7 months and cant wait to get rid of it, but have yet another 16 months left on the contract. In the time I have had it I have had to have the keypad repaired as 3 of the keys cracked and became un-usable. My advice to anyone thinking of getting this phone would be DON'T its the worst phone I have ever had. Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Sue Lupton on 17/02/2010 Firstly it has Google maps but this does not work with gps and the maps on Vodafone find and go are only ok if you only want roads (I enjoy walking in the countryside and mountains). Emails often say 'message too large' - very frustrating. screen size too small and won't work with a stylus, so frequently get wrong touch screen position. It won't read email attachments. The camera is not a touch on the Sony Ericsson so rather dissapointed Rating: ![]() ![]() Reviewed by irishlass on 15/02/2010 hate this phone with the passion, it has done nothing but break on me! Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Nat Cole on 07/02/2010 I had a Tocco Ultra for about 3 months when it got nicked on a train journey. I must say the phone is an attractive number and the thing that appealed to me was the slide out keypad. The touch screen is capacitive so you can't use any kind of pointing device and although the clarity of the screen is amazing, unless you have fingers like needles, you can't use most of the features properly. Texting is a pain and the menu system is not very well planned out. After my first one was stolen, I had 4 replacement handsets from "Policy Admin" phone insurance, all of which were duff. This was the final straw for me and an otherwise reasonable phone was abandoned for an LG slider. Good points: Nice looker, good daylight camera. Nice screen. Good call clarity. Keypad. Bad points. Rubbish menu, Internet experience useless. Dire battery life. (GPS will get you to the end of the street if lucky on a full charge). Conclusion: A good phone ruined through lack of attention to functiona lity. Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Jess on 04/02/2010 Thank you for solving the apostrophe issue!! Amazing - this has been annoying me for 6 months, and now works like a dream, it's amazing! I agree with most of the reviews on here - this phone looks and feels good, and has a great camera, but is pretty rubbish at being a phone. Mine quite often doesn't make outgoing calls as it says network busy, but when I put my sim into a different phone it's fine. That's pretty annoying. My battery life is pretty good though I have to say - normally lasts a week and I use it a lot. Rating: ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Phil P on 03/02/2010 I have had this phone for 3 months, bought it because of its keyboard & touch screen. I have had no trouble with it at all, the screen is a little unresponsive sometimes but i have a works phone where you use a pen/pick/probe thing and thats just as bad so cant critisise the ultra for that. Texting is fine , not brilliant but i dont text at 100mph like kids these days. Camera is as good if not better than the vast majority of mobile phone camera's , it certainly makes the I-Phones camera look crappy. All in all i am very happy with this phone, £75 recon unit on Pay As You Go :) Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Sarah on 02/02/2010 I'm afraid that I must agree with most of the negative reviews of this phone. Absolutely awesome phone, feels very expensive, great build quality, fantastic camera etc etc BUT COMPLETELY UNUSABLE!!! Dan Searle's review is totally accurate, texting is hell on Earth, no wonder my calling rates have spiralled since buying this phone. I cannot be bothered to spend 10mins trying to type with dictionary, add in new words and attempt to use correct English grammer in my texts. Fantastic features but you can't use half of them and it's so slow! Battery life is appalling if you want to make more than one call per day (i.e most of the population)so my phone lives attached to it's charger. Not very "mobile" then! Am stuck on a 24month contract with this monsterous thing so it's going on ebay and i'm going back to Sony Ericsson. Horrendous mistake, please just don't bother buying one!! What this about the battery (hardly lasting a day) I find the that it will last me over a week before a recharge, after heavy use. A good solid feel, smooth sliding action, a clear display. definitely well worth considering. Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by SIlver on 29/01/2010 Utter garbage; avoid this phone at all costs. Read Dan Searles review below for more in depth reasons but it really does have to be one of the worst phones I have ever used. I think my first ever Nokia, 13years ago had more useability than this. If I had an alternative I would take great pleasure in smashing this phone to pieces! Don't be fooled by the fact that it is pretty, I would rather have a brick than this! Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Sophie on 26/01/2010 I love this phone. Had some issues with the texting to start with but have discovered (from here among other places) the solutions. The movement around texts by touching until the arrows appear is great. Also, with the annoying lack of apostrophe in T9, you can set it to work by going to Messages/Settings/Text Messages/Sending Options then changing the 'character support' to 'automatic'. Works like a dream now. The phone is back in the good books and I won't be throwing it out of the window! I like the widgets, have customised for one touch access to create message and inbox. I've rearranged them so they are ordered by my prefence. No issues with calling. I checked out the functionality before buying and it's just what I wanted. Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by kaycee on 24/01/2010 I've had this phone for two weeks now, and am still having fun in finding out all the fab features and how they work. I'm not one for reading manuals but this time I had to!!! But found it simple to understand. I love this phone; OK the battery life isn't the best, but with all the techy stuff on it, and the fact I've been using it alot, it will drain quickly. I usually charge my phones every night anyway. I've now set up all my personal ringtones and message/alarm tones using the Samsung Studio software that came with it. And my organiser/calendar/contact lists are now all installed and working. It's now "my" phone. I find the dual input for texts very handy, although yes the keypad is somewhat easier than the touchscreen, but then again I found out exactly where and how firm to touch the screen in order to get the best response. I'm glad I got this phone, as the other models I tried in the shop didn't have all the features I wanted, and my other choices were found to have software problems. Rating: ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Harley on 18/01/2010 I've had this phone for a couple of weeks now and find it incredibly frustrating. I may yet take it back, which is a pity because I've been using Samsung phones for a few years now and have always loved them. Apart from everything people have said already about texting, moving the cursor and so on, which are all things I have experienced too, today I found a new difficulty - deactivating Bluetooth. It may be an obvious thing for some, but it took me ages to work out. I couldn't find how to deactivate Bluetooth in the manual (the paper copy and the downloaded version) and trawled through the internet, including this forum. In the end, only found out how quite by accident (madly tapping on any little thing I could see!!) To deactivate Bluetooth, go to Menu, then Applications, then Bluetooth. Alternatively, just hit the bluetooth icon on the Widgets bar on the left hand side of the screen. At the top and to the left of the heading "Bluetooth", you'll see a small grey box with horizontal lines on it. Tap that and it will come up with "Activation on". Tap that, and it should turn blue and tell you that it's been deactivated. It's also a quick way of activating it, when you want it. Rating: ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Kristina on 18/01/2010 Just got this phone - there are some issues with not being able to scroll through texts to correct or add/delete words, but in predictive text where you want to use an "apostrophe" you just type the word as it would appear without an apostrophe and it puts it in automatically, may need to scroll through word options to get right one, eg "it's" (just type in i-t-s)comes up as "its" then scroll down a couple of words and you get "it's". Also frustrating as haven't worked out when adding new word, how to get first letter into lower case, other than typing the word after the first letter, then getting the cursor back to the right of the first (capital) letter and deleting the capital letter !!!! Also can't get some punctuation on the "add word" facility in particular an apostrophe to add "I'm" !! How do I get to use the "keyboard" facility as can't actually see it on the screen, but have seen in bottom left of screen on some demos I've watched ??? On my previous Sam sung you could get a blank message by using a shortcut button, is there this possibility on the Tocco or do I have to go to Menu, Messaging, Create Message, Message every time ?? It all took a little getting used to as some user functions are not as user friendly (obvious) as they should be. the phone has many features, some of which i just cant figure out why they bothered if there is no software installed to support the feature; namely GPS? surely samsung is a big enough company to provide a sat-nav, even a basic one on their GPS phones. Also the phone is motion/shake sensitive but the only thing this is good for is the dice rolling application!!! you will find also that the back of the phone is easily scratched and scuffed this is because of a couple of things, 1. there are no raised corner points to protect the rest of the back and secondly this phone spends an awful lot of its time like a cheap hooker, laying on its back & charging! you'll find a full charge lasts only a day. the only way around this is to get get a 'skin' to protect your phone and maybe a spare battery. the phone comes with the basics, but little or no extras installed. not really any nice surprises; nothing to make you say ' hey i was right to buy this phone' the pop-out application panel on the home screen is a nice idea although the user has limited control over what appears on it. go to the samsung web site and there is no free applications or even wallpapers.. everything has a price tag attached to it.. unlike sony for example. i tried to download some games and applications onto this phone just so it actually had something on it - the majority of the apps, on startup, said "java error, insufficient memory". on googleing this, it appears to be a common problem and quite rediculous that a phone of this stature cannot run installed applications.. some apps would run after following a long drawn-out procedure: "Updating the Java's database. On your mobile phone click on the 'Dial' button, than dial '*#6984125*#' go to 'Internals' enter the following Master Key '*#9072641*#' Go to 'Storage Settings' and click on 'Update Java DB'." why the heck should an end user have to do this to get an app to work? the joke is, if you install any further apps you have to do the same again! ha you gotta laugh :) apart from that it's a great phone. Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by George Kronfli on 23/12/2009 I have had this phone for just over a week, and I almost sent it back! I am so glad I didn't. Coming to it from Nokia needed a complete culture readjustment, but was well worth it. The voice quality is superb, the camera is excellent, producing sharp and contrasty photos, certainly enlargeable to 8"X10", at least those taken in daylight. The SATNAV/GPS is superb and works very well with Google maps, which are incorporated. The texting is fine, but try not to use the key pad and stick to the touch screen and T9 which I found at least as reliable and faster than my previous Nokia. Message for Danielle, to get rid of the annoying Events widget, just move it with your finger tip back into the left hand part of the screen, where it will disappear. You can also move the cursor back to correct mistakes while texting by using your finger tip and placing it on the part of the message you need correcting, of course you have to use the touch screen for that. I think the keypad was included for people like me who never used a touch screen before, just to make them feel comfortable. Now I rarely use it. Also the software DVD that came with it is very good and works well; do read the online instructions carefully. The batterry lasts at least all day, using all the above features, which really isn't bad, certanly no worse than previous phones I have had, which had less features than the Tocco Ultra. A highly recommended phone all round. I got this phone on an upgrade. Coming from a history of SE's it took a day or two to get used to the touch screen interface. Long story short, the phone looks nice, photos are amazing but i have to echo the reviews of previous posters. Texting is made longer than needed due to difficulty in correcting mistakes, predictive text needs to be improved, wodgets seem to float form the bar to the main screen which can be annoying (t mobile line drifts all over the screen!, ring tone starts off quiet, screensavers are annoying (after 6 months!) and my biggest gripe is 2 days ago all the darn buttons stopped working! The touch works but the lock button, camera button, on off button and all the buttons in the slider will not respond. Tried resetting etc...nothing...phone has gone into repair but i am adamant that when it comes back, i am off to get a simpler "does what it says on the tin" type of phone. I never liked it but guess that point is irrelevant! However, we have recently been forced into getting a different handsfree kit in one of our cars which replaced one that was written off. Hubby is now suggesting that I get a new phone to replace my Motorola Razr (which I love and have NO PROBLEMS with) as his Tocco Ultra is useless with the new ultra up to date car kit! When people call me or I call them, I can hear them, but they can not hear me. It is sooooo annoying. I have had a new handset, sim card, messed around with it for hours with Vodaphone staff directing me what to do on the phone but to no avail! In my most recent call to vodaphone last week they told me this is not an isolated problem and that Samsung have just brought out some new software I need to to get put onto my phone to get rid of this problem. I am at the end of my tether has anyone else experienced this? Apart from this the phone is ok, I wouldnt get another samsung though, its the worst phone I have ever had and the first time I have had a samsung. I am not into all the gadgets, internet etc but really liked the look of the phone and was taken in by the camera! The widgets are really annoying and slide all over the place and I can not stop the phone answering if it is in my pocket and I try to get it out it will answer a call because of the sensitive touch screen even if the keypad is locked when it rings it seems to activate the touch screen, any ideas on how to prevent this? Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Tom Hickman on 12/10/2009 The Samsung tocco ultra, it’s pretty and that’s about it, the internet browsing really isn’t that good. The music quality is awful it doesn’t support a 3.5mm jack which is terrible for music lovers. The speaker for calling is disappointing. Scrolling on this phone is no good I had to keep pressing the volume rockers to scroll because the touch screen was annoying because it didn’t have the flick screen like LG Renoir or IPhoneL. The paint job is awful the back to very, very easy to scratch so if you want to keep in good condition you have to spend extra amount of money to keep is clean. The camera is okay, a times it went dull and i had to reset all the setting, I just got so annoyed with this phone I literally had to go back to my Nokia n95. Main problems I have found is that it has re-started about 4 times when I have been half way through texting, going to receive a call and when just sat by the side of me...strange. I hate having to slide the phone open to use the camera, when everything else can be used and accessed with the phone closed. This makes it very fiddly and the settings have to be adjusted using the touch screen icons before you take a photo, needless to say when on a night out it is NOT something quick and instant which is easy to hold. On a plus side the touch screen is quite responsive and I found texting more speedy and the widgets can be changed for easier access to apps you use more frequently. Internet usage quite speedy, I use face book and found this to be easy to view on the larger screen and navigate.
