It's quite neat but the touch screen is far too fast when scrolling and it's extremely difficult to get to where you are trying to go, for instance when scrolling through contacts. Going to a specific number in your recent calls list is practically impossible. Saving a copy of an SMS you are sending is either on or off in the phone config, so it's no good setting it to off and then hoping to do a "save and send" like previous Samsungs, that's not an option. Texting is slow compared to keyed phones. Nice size and feel though and a decent camera. Overall, I'm a bit disappointed.

I love my Tocco, after reading you review I it obvious you guys know what you're on about. I agree with everything you have put. It has first rate internet. The first mobile I can confidently use hotmail on to keep up with my e-mails on. I haven't experienced any 'dropped calls' but it's only downside is the voice quality on the recieving end, it can be rather quiet even when set on maximum, not everytime mind, so far i'd say 1/5 calls. I wouldn't let it stop anyone getting this handset its 'Pros' far out weigh a minor 'Con'.

I'm now on my 4th Tocco! Orange have replaced it 3 times and now say that they are awaiting the release of a software update from Samsung to fix the call dropping problem. Well, seeing as Orange are as useful as a chocolate fireguard, I went on the Samsung website and used their online fault facility to ask them what the solution was. They responded within 4 hours and told me that they have released new firmware for the Tocco and that if I take my phone to one of their service centres (Carphonewarehouses) and leave my phone with them for 24 hours they will install the new firmware and the problems will stop. Spoke to Carewhonewarehouse and they are fully aware of the upgrade. Finally, there is light at the end of the tunnel! (I hope)

Bought this phone a couple of days ago and loved it!! Yes its gone I had to send it back because it couldnt run the software on my Sony Viao. My N95 could and Sony Erricson could but try as desperately as I could (Including help from Samsung & Vodafone and taking the laptop into a Vodafone shop), the software wouldn't work. I miss it because it was awesome, I could read messages without my glasses, the phone was as clear as talking next to a friend, it never hung and was so easy to use. Why is My Viao at fault?? I want my Tocco Back!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well have reviewed the phone before, but thought I'd put this update in. After having many issues (like many others) with dropping calls etc I was on the verge of swapping for a different handset. However as I liked the Tocco so much I decided I'd try updating the firmware to the latest version. This seems to have totally fixed the call dropping issue and I think has even improved the call qusality. I'd suggest that anyone who has been having problems but doesnt want to switch handsets give it a go. There are a few articles on the internet on how to do it and its pretty simple. Also a nice bonus is that it gets rid of the operator branding (with the exception of the widget) so it appears pretty much like a sim free version would. With the call issue resolved its back to five stars for me!!

I'm happy to say that, after much hassle, I managed to send my Tocco back. The phone looks very nice and the touch screen is a treat. I was very pleased for the first 5 min of receiving it. However, when I tried the camera I was very disapointed with the quality for a 5mp camera. My 2 years old SE could take much better pictures. I was willing to overlook this and even decided to buy a separated digital camera. The turning point came when I started to use the phone main feature: making calls. Most of my calls dropped in the first seconds. I went back and exchange for another Tocco and had the same problems. From the nine days I had this phone I only had 3 successful calls. I had a look online and saw many people had the same problem. I decided to terminate my contract and I had a BIG trouble to do so. Today I am finally free and I dont have to be worried about being stuck with a phone that doesnt work during a 18 months contract. If you really want to buy it do at yo ur own risk. BTW I had the updated firmware.

Cons: -Touch screen not as good as iPhone. -Menus have many irritations (previously used a Motorola and Sony Ericsson) -Propriety headphone socket -Menus crap -Importing address book forces all entries to be Surname->Forename. -Camera worse than similar speced Nokia's and SonyE's -Feckin' menus! Summary: thankfully i only took a year's contract and it was a free upgrade!

I've had this phone for a couple of weeks now and I love it! At first I found it a bit odd going from a Nokia Brick to a touch screen and the manual wasn't that helpful but part of the fun in this phone is exploring. Camera is great quality and when taking pics it feels more like digi-cam than a phone and I've not had any probs with the screen being sensitive during calls as the phone auto locks the touch screen. Music quality is fab and the expandable memory means I don't need my Ipod anymore! The widgets aren't as customisable as I'd have liked and There doesn't seem to be anyway of turning off the very annoying predictable text( Can anyone help with that???). Also it is unclear at first how to turn off the keypad volume whilst leaving the ringer alone but again a little exploring and all becomes clear. The only other major gripe is that you can only customise individual ringtones for contacts you save to the phone rather than to the SIM as well. (I like to keep contacts on the SIM in case the phone goes pants) I know this sounds like a list of gripes but they are more warnings than moans. If I can use this phone anyone can. Now all I have to do is sort out the rubbish signal I'm getting from T mobile!! (Orange was much better!)

Got the tocco yesterday and so far i really like it. i did have the old mototola razor which was 2 and a half years old and pretty recked so i suppose anything in comparison is good really but as far as i can go compareing it to other phones i have come across id say its pretty damned good. In comparison to the iphone its no where near as fun, with only one game from orange (and the 2 games ive downloaded are pretty pants)but its a good cheaper alternative and the touch screen works really effectively. Also in comparison with the LG Viewty its about the same attractiveness wise, but the scroll on it is BAD. i got so frustated trying to work it in the shop and even the sales assistant couldn't work it. Ive read reviews of people saying that the scroll jst takes a little practise and patience but that would be the first thing you would need to figure out before you can even play with it because u need the scroll feature for a lot of things and its jst annoying and such a major part of actually being able to use the phone that its jst stupid that its that hard. plus if u lend any1 your fone they wont be able to work it. The only niggle ive had to far is if ive rang say orange and they say press 1 if you want blah de blah because its a bit annoying having to get to number pad up and you have to actually look at the screen because you cant just feel the button. But other than that (which is a very minor niggle compared to the cost and availablity of the iphone and the damned scroll on the viewty, plus how many numbers do you ring with the whole number option thing appart from call centres) i havnt really come across anything. there are no games that have been created especially for the touch screen which is a little dispointing but i suppose i will have to give them time on that one. The camera is good quality, as is recordings, the memorys good, but that said i got a free 8GB memory card from orange so i dunno what its lik e without that. but all in all so far a really good fone, which is fun to use but lacks in the game department. Camera, speakers, etc all good and so far ive got no complaints!

Whoever think that one can only enter 15 characters in appointments, 100 characters in Memo, no alphabets in address's postcode is pure stupidity. Whatever I sync from Outlook looks ackward in the phone because of these limitations. Love those customising? Well, there's only 8 of them and some of them are pretty useless (Birthdays, Network info, games, two widgets of clocks etc). You can't add as you like. I like to see Bluetooth on/off or Memo or Appointment etc. It takes one second each to scroll down the song list. Imagine you have 500 songs. Doc viewer is a laugh - you can't scroll as intended. Bug? You can't work on your phone if you are connected to PC i.e. you can't check calendar, phonebook etc. You might like how it looks, but this phone is highly basic, and many features were done without thinking. I didn't touch on basic phone features as they are covered here. It makes me think of 1990s features for the 21st century.

I only used my Tocco for about 5 days and have now reverted back to using my old X820. I loved playing with the phone etc but the sound quality was unbelievably poor. For any calls made outdoors I was unable to hear the other person. Back to my X820 and it's fine. Seeing as only some people are reporting this I'm wondering if its just a faulty batch or if some people only make calls indoors or with the headset (which to me seems ok but not great). Very disappointed 'cause I do love it but CAN'T HEAR!!!

This isn't an 'outstanding' phone. Live with it for a few days and you will soon see how poorly designed this thing is. There are very few user customisable features: for instance the 'widget' which is supposed to offer drag and drop shortcuts, but these are preset and very limited (time, dual clock, birthday reminders, network supplier!!, etc. ) I don't need these as shortcuts! This renders the 'widget' pretty much defunct. The camera is absolute rubbish. If your subject stays perfectly still in a cryogenically frozen state for 30 seconds you might get a reasonably blur-free picture. If not, the image you clicked on is light years away from the image you actually get. You can load as many gadgets on the camera as you like, but if your subject doesn't keep still for approx. 5-10 seconds it's all pointless. I really wanted to like this phone, but couldn't live with it. I even cancelled early and decided to go through the hassle of losing my number I've had for the la st 8 years than stay with this phone for the next 18 months. Buy it online so you can send it back within your cooling off period - it's just not what it promises, which is a real shame.

Downloaded a few games and they don't work as well as I would have liked with the touch screen interface (got them from the Vodafone site to ensure compatability). Had mine for a couple of weeks now and it's pretty much driving me nuts. When taking photos there seems to be a 3 second delay, which means taking "spur of the moment" shots or a quick pic of your pet looking at the camera are nearly impossible. Also, setting a shot you've taken as your screensaver is not exactly the easiest thing to do, as the edit function will edit the shot, but not necessarily save the changes. In addition to this, somehow it's impossible to get pictures the right way up as the rotate function flips one way, one way only and one time only. The quality, however, is EXCELLENT! No emoticons on text messages. What is THAT all about? I feel like I'm back to my Nokia 3210. The sound during calls is APPALLING! The sound is not at all clear and very tinny. Makes it quite hard to understand what the other person is saying. Indeed the worst ever out of all the phones I've owned or used over the last 10 years. The phone seems to decide to turn its functions on and off on a whim, which makes me wonder how many contacts its deleted during its moment of artificial intelligence. Such an example includes keypad tones materialising out of thin air. Not at all impressed with reception as this seems to be inconsistent and unreliable. I've had various text reports never arrive, despite knowing the text HAS arrived. I've also had plenty of voice mails and texts informing me people have called, yet the phone hasn't made a sound. Hmmmm..... and upon checking, it had signal apparently! Lovely phone, mediocre functions, rubbish if you need a reliable way of staying in touch via text and phone, but if you're after something that acts as a PDA and takes good photos (as long as nothing's moving in them), this is the phone for you. Bitterly disappointed at what could've been, with minimal refining, an outstanding handset.

I have now decided to try a different model of phone, I cant wait till Samsung TRY to resolve the software issue as im becoming more and more frustrated with the inability to carry out a simple phone call without person on the other end of phone thinking im hanging up on them, (incidentally once the phone has dropped the call, it takes several minutes to try to reconnect to any other calls ie someone ringing me or me trying to ring the caller back which i lost when the call dropped initially) Would I rate the phone ABSOLUTLY !!!! *** but only once the software problem which Samsung are fully aware of are sorted out once and for all *** Id like to think that the fault will be sorted in the very near future as a couple of my work colleagues have the same phone with the same fault on different network providers (2 on vodafone, 1 orange & myself on tmobile)

I have had the Samsung Tocco now for a week and as a whole, its pretty sweet. Obviously, I have some nags with it. When moving the numbers from my old N95 to the Tocco, I had to transfer onto the memory card, then ONE by ONE register them to the Samsung phonebook, then delete them from the memory card - it took ages. I think the backplate with the screen cover on it was designed by a complete fool - it would have seemed better to place the cover over the top of the phone rather than have to hold it like a prat when texting - you'll understand if you have one. I notice that a few people have had issues with texting and using the touch screen, but it took 5 minutes to get used to and I've had no problems. The internet browser is pretty cool - but hard to get use if you have fat fingers! I'm not massively keen on the maximum volume, I'm half deaf and I don't always find it loud enough even on the top settings. I am loving the fact that you can set an MP3 as your text tone, as very few Samsung's allow you to do it. There are some great security features, what with being able to lock out almost the entire phone with password protection - good, if you have content on your phone, you'd rather the kids didnt see! The camera is pretty good and the quality rivals that of the N95. The phone book can be a bit of a pain, only 3 numbers are displayed on the screen at once and I am not happy with the amount of downloadable games that are available for it - very little from what I've seen so far and the onboard game is pathetic. However, with all the little nagging issues, I'm pretty happy with the upgrade - I'll would have been annoyed if I had paid for it as I feel it was more of a side-step than an UPgrade from the Nokia N95 - however, get it, see if you like it and make your own decision. Regret that I should have awaited the upcoming 8MP camera phones coming out soon... [Editor's comment: Andy, there's *always* something better coming out soon ...]

In General the phone funcions fine, but the more pixels on your camera the more important the quality of the lens...therefore the Samsung Tocco went back...and the touch screen was not my cup of tea, texting was a real mission. it lasted about twenty minutes in my hands before i decided top send it back. there are no fun things with it, no games on arrival (not the end of the world) but with the texting i missed the vivid text of the D900. the process of texting was different and the touch screen makes it a two handed affair. the case is not really adequate and is more of a flap than anything which showed lack of imagination. some will love it but after having D500/D600/D900 it is a real dissappointment and I am heading back to Nokia for the quality lenses and the possiblity of sat nav....and some buttons:-)

This phone is seriously awesome! I have been getting used to it for over a week now... I don't know why they didn't come out with this phone earlier. The features alone are more than any phone I have ever used before. It is surprisingly durable too. Good job Samsung. I would recommend this phone to anyone.

What's the point in giving a phone 5 stars when you don't have one ?? The point is to give an independent opinion having tested the phone. (RAY, below) And in answer to the same person this phone drops calls with the 2nd version of the software and they are still trying to resolve the problem. I'm glad that mine has gone back and I can make calls again in the reasonable expectation of having a conversation rather than "hello" and getting cut off !

Although I love the F480, all features are easy to use and manageable, my only problem is that my F480 continuously drops call both inbound and out going, so I have a fantastic phone that I can’t make calls on for more that a few seconds……. Orange has informed me that this has been reported as a common fault, and is awaiting a response from Samsung. On the other hand I have spoken to Samsung who are unaware of this problem, as a result of this confusion I have been left with no choice but to return my phone to orange and cancel my contact after only 23 days in which time I have had two separate handsets and have spent many time ringing between orange and Samsung to resolve the problem…. If anyone knows or has experienced this problem for them selves, please let Samsung know so that we can start to benefit from a fully functional F480.

I have been also told by Samsung that a software update will resolve this issue and was sent to my local Car phone Warehouse with a Samsung engineer reference number in hand only to be told that the software is unavailable to them for a number of weeks plus there engineers will need to be trained up first, if you want good pictures buy a digital camera, if you want internet and music buy a Ipod touch, and if you want to make phone calls DON’T BUY A F480…

I've had the Samsung Tocco for 4 days now, I've had Samsungs for a few years now and generally I like them. My last phone was a Sony Ericsson and I HATED it, then it packed up like most Sony Ericssons so I returned to Samsung. On first impressions I like the phone, the touch screen is responsive, texting is dead easy and quick and the screen feedback is really good. It's compact and light, has a nifty option of a back with a built in screen cover (my iphone buddy is jealous of this bit alone!), basically a nice looking phone. I do have a few comments though; If you're a man with big hands forget it, the touch screen will drive you nuts it takes some perfecting to scroll without tapping something you didn't want! My boyfriend keeps complaining that the sound quality is rubbish when he calls me - I can hear him fine but he says he can't hear me properly...I shall test this by listening to his phone while he's on mine – will get back to you on this point! The bir thday feature is a bit useless unless you want to keep your contacts on the phone memory (which I don't from past experience with the Sony Ericsson fiasco) so you can't put in extra details when saving to the SIM..bit rubbish as I thought this was quite useful, but you could get round it by setting alarms for birthday reminders! The camera pic admitedly does look rubbish on the phone but think this is a memory saving trick they look fine when you download them...however if you want yr pics to look good on the phone probably wouldn't recommend it! The menu graphics look a bit cartoony, for such a slick looking phone the icons really look rubbish. Samsung should've made them a bit more stylish (minor point though), however the widgets look a bit better. I've not had the converstaion drop-outs that other people have experienced....fingers crossed I won't, I'm with T-mobile...it may be a network issue?!? Helen – re your question about deleting contacts you've texted...just go to the Sent folder in messages and delete them from there and to use the birthday feature you have to save the contact to the phone memory where it gives you more options as I mentioned previously. Hope that helps. All in all I like the phone, there are things that definitely let it down, there's no point in comparing it to the iphone...no contest...but as touch screens go it's the best out there. I would say it's defo more of a girls phone and wins style over substance but I'm happy with it for the time being...I'll change it in 12 months anyway and I'm sure there will be better ones out there by then, but it's not a bad phone by any means justtakes a bit of getting used to.

It's a difficult phone to review to be honest. I've had mine a month now and I find that I am forced to give it 1 out of 5 basically I'm suffering from the apparently fairly common problem of the low call volume. It means I'm struggling to hear people when I call or receive a call so on this front, it utterly fails at it's primary function. All the other features are actually pretty good. Camera quality is good, 3g is fast and the radio is a nice touch. However, if you're seriously thinking of getting this phone. I'd probably advise against it based purely on the volume issue.

I think the Tocco is great! * touch screen easy to use, also predictive texts makes texting just as fast if you had button * great camera and very bright flash! * mp3 and radion sound quality faultless * great design of changeableback cover, ideal so that the screen doesnt get scratched i have no complaints with this phone at all!

I have had this phone for 5 days now, and it deserves the positive reviews it is getting. I have been a faithful SE fan and had been looking forward to upgrading my K800i to the new C902. However, I am partially sighted and the menus on the C902 are even smaller than my K800i rendering it useless for me. So, on to the F480, the phone is superb, very nicely made, call quality is very good and ring tone and earpiece volumes more than adequate (PROVIDED) you adjust them in the profiles. The menu system fonts are larger than most current mobiles, and text messages and Internet fonts can be zoomed to a very large size, ideal for people with visual disabilities, well done Samsung! Text messaging, the process takes a little getting used to, I found using my index finger rather than thumb made it easier, and it is pretty easy to access ABC and T9 txt. Listening to mp3s through the standard earphone is better than my partners ITouch! Camera quality is very good, once again provided you adjust everything to the maximum resolutions. The length of videos can also be adjusted, as default; it is set for sending via MMS. Mobile Internet speeds are also very fast indeed, plus the benefit of being able to zoom in or out on the pages. The only problems experienced so far are that I tried to install Operamini browser without success, and also tried to download a game, which also froze. Samsung provide two battery covers for the phone, one in the brushed metal finish, and another leather "wallet". I fitted the latter and it is very convenient, looks good and provides great protection for the phone and screen, one again, great design. My only criticism, is battery life, not what I am used to from Sony, but still seems to have lasted about 3 days so far, with lots of fiddling and exploring. I suppose with the size of the screen, shorter life is to be expected. As one or two other reviewers have said, I am also very picky, and research everything I buy, the Tocca has not disappointed and I would recommend you take a look at it.
