Samsung D900
Product Rating
Samsung D900 ReviewRating: Date: 28/11/2006 The Samsung D900 is a beautifully stylish and ultra slim top of the range camera phone. It is a sliding phone with the dimensions of 103.5 x 51 x 12.9 mm and weighs just 85g. It has a high quality magnesium surface in a sleek black finish. The phone has a great 3 megapixel camera with 4 x digital zoom and video capabilities allowing you to record in MPEG4 format. It also has autofocus meaning that the camera will automatically focus on a particular subject instead of using a fixed focus distance helping to produce sharp and good quality pictures. The phone has a TFT display viewable in bright sunlight with 240 x 320 pixels and 262k colours. This is a very good screen and among the best around at the moment. The music player is stereo with 3D surround sound and a digital power amp supporting MP3, ACC, ACC+ and e-ACC+ formats. The Samsung D900i also has an FM radio. The D900 has 60MB of internal memory and the option to insert an external memory card to increase the memory up to 512MB giving you plenty of room to store your songs and other files with ease. This phone allows you to use MP3's as ringtones and supports a 64-voice polyphonic sound which means that it can play 64 notes simultaneously. The downside is that you are not able to use MP3's for your text tones, but on the upside, Samsung have made this phone capable of vibrating and ringing at the same time. The D900 has great connectivity via Bluetooth, USB and TV-Output. Bluetooth enables you to wirelessly connect to another Bluetooth device up to 10 metres apart whilst connecting to a PC is done with a USB cable. The TV output connection allows you to view images and videos directly on a TV with the use of the document viewer as this enables you to transmit your files to a projector or present them on a TV or computer. It connects to the internet with EDGE data transfer speeds. It is a full-function internet browser that gives you up to three times faster communication rates then GPRS. This phone operates on a quad-band frequency so is capable of working in Europe, America and Japan. The battery life is relatively good with a standby of 350 hours. Overall this is an excellent phone with great style and design as well as some really good features. It has an excellent camera, one of the best out at the moment, and considering that it is an ultra slim phone this is a great achievement. The MP3 player and supporting memory is also excellent. The bonus features with this phone such as the document reader and TV-Output are a nice touch, and we would definitely recommend this phone.

Reviewed by Parry on 25/03/2007 Dave, my friend, get your facts right before advertising nokia fones on a samsung review site. First of all the phone can play in full screen mode by simply pressing the 1 key! the only reason why you think that the nokia is better is because it has an FM radio and memory card with it. you repeated this twice and is your only argument for the nokia, a 512MB card will set you back 15 quid, not exactly bursting the bank. this phone is great by the way, i recommend it to all xx Rating:

Reviewed by Nick on 25/03/2007 great Phone but really Samsung need to move on from this and start setting benchmarks again. While the d900 is by far the best is there really much differance between the d500 and d600? you start to get the feeling that all that is the d900 could of been put in the d500 right from the start and that samsung are just holding back on us just so they can keep looking like they are bringing out new phones when really if the truth be told there not. I give it 5 stars because it beats the pants of all other phones of this type of spec but really as far as look, feel and first impressions there was more of a wow factor when the d500 hit the street so against that it gets a 3 star rating. And please Samsung when oh when are you going to listen to your public and give us message tones we can change!!!! its been such an issue for such a long time i wonder if Samsung ever listen...... The camera is more than perfection in a well lit area but i have to admit in dark its grainy and not great. The screen is bright and well coloured, just the right screen oh and its big! Video cood be better wen viewing it in full screen still pretty good tho. The reely bad side is watching out if the screen cracks. Mine hasent yet saying tht i only got it yesterday but already im having to keep testing the temperature because the best thing to do is keep it below 40c! other than than, its a reely AMAZING fone! hope this helped. Reviewed by Gordon McLean on 23/03/2007 Physically this is a gorgeous phone, very 'touchable'. But once you start using it... not so good. Considering this is being pitched as a 'business' phone it suffers from SHOCKINGLY bad syncing with Outlook, and some rather 'twee' message alerts which you can't change. Phone quality is patchy at times, and the internet access is slooow. Not a good phone. Rating:

Reviewed by Barry on 21-03-2007 I was looking for a slider phone to replace my Nokia 6270 that I'd had for over a year. I had a shortlist of the E65, K800i, W850 and LG Shine. I need a slider phone for the larger keys they typically offer, coupled with a large screen size. I compared the 4 above in the O2 shop along with the D900 that I hadn't shortlisted but the assistant recommended. The E65 was rejected as it has no light for the camera and the UI was too different to my then current phone. The K800i keys were too small so that went, although I liked the camera. So that left the LG shine and the D900. I was tempted by the Shine but the scrolling wheel was too difficult to get on with and there was a delay in response, so when you stopped scrolling the highlighted option continued to change several seconds afterwards! What with that and the potential for the wheel to jam up with fluff from your pocket I came down to the D900. So after less than 1 weeks use I'm both impressed and dissapointed. The weight, size and camera are the most obvious improvements over the Nokia 6270 but after that I'm struggling. The ability to set recurring alarms for different days of the week is good. As is the ability to charge the battery via the USB data cable is good. One less cable for me to carry around! The screen is very clear and menus easy to read and navigate the short cut keys are very similar to the Nokia. If you don't like the configuration you can change it. On the negative side, along with some of the irritations previously mentioned like: The lip on the bottom of the key pad making it difficult to access the bottom row of keys. Not being able to have a mp3 as your text alert. Not having a quick key to view images in landscape mode. Pressing 1 works for video, why not still images? My biggest gripe is the calendar functions and especially the synchronisation with outlook. Why when the D900 calendar has the concept of annual recurring events like birthdays and anniversaries does it put them in as one off events in the past on the date I added them to outlook? Outlook has the concept of daily, weekly, monthly, annual recurring appointments and you can specify which days of the week or month they recur. In the D900 you only get daily, weekly or monthly so the recurring appointments in outlook get entered as a series of one off appointments less than ideal! In the Nokia I had addresses stored with numbers for many of my contacts when I transferred these there is no place to store the address. So to advertise it as having personal organiser functions is stretching things a bit far compared to many modern phones with this facility. I'm waiting for my Micro SD card to be delivered so I'm not able to comment on the problems that others have reported with getting different brands of cards to be recognised or transferring of files between the phone and the card. One last thing the Tiger woods golf game is a pale imitation of the one that came as standard on the Nokia and for the D900 you have to pay £5 for the privilege of downloading it first! For the aove reasons I'm going to give it an only average rating. If Samsung could sort out the calendar and contacts and the other little niggles then I'd give it an outstanding. Rating:

Reviewed by marc on 19/03/2007 A good all rounder except for the following 1) No voice activated dialling (Essential in my view) 2) Rubbish camera (It cannot take a decent picture unless subject is motionless) 3) Over complicated to send a text 4) Poor battery life (however long it is charged for, the display will never say `Charge Complete`) I like the phone, but knowing now what I did not know when I got it, I would have chosen something different. Rating:
Reviewed by Purpleflanger on 19/03/2007 I would start off by saying the D900 is a fine phone, worth a 5 star rating. Most of the people rubbishing it appear not to have read the manual, and as for the small video playback, just press 1. Rating:

I abolutley love it, it's features are amazing, the camera is superb... althought i do agree with gcol, it can be grainy when the light's a little dark, but most of the time it takes 5/5 photo's. Reviewed by hsl on 14/03/2007 I haved changed my cell phones quite alot for the past 2 years. I've had samsung d500, motorola razr, samsung trace x820 cell phone(Screen cracked after one drop), and LG Chocolate(by far the worst phone ever). None by far can be compared to this Samsung D900. This phone as advertised is the slimmest sliding phone in the world. The voice is clear and phone is very light. What makes this cell likeable is because it is so easy to use the phone. Also phone has a special surface cover w/ unique feeling. I dropped samsung x820 once and its screen cracked. I have dropped this phone twice already but i cannot find any cracks and phone is working fine. If you are someone who drops the phone quite often but still want a stylish slim phone, u will want to buy this phone. I have now noticed why this phone costs a little more than most other phones. There is always a reason for the high price. Rating:

One of the main downfalls of the phone is the price tag it comes in at around £200 but i have recently found at phone or you they are doinga deal and selling it for £149. But when you weigh up the whole lot of complete specifications i would rather choose the samsung e900 as it can be purchased brand new from phone for you for £99 and has the same features except a lower 2 megapixel camera but the fantastic touch sensitive buttons make up for that. Reviewed by Tanya on 11/03/2007 Not impressed. Have had it about a week plus. To turn off the incredibly annoying keypad beeps, call Samsung themselves. Look on their website, there is their number. I did, and after trawling through several ways of doing it, the guy did hit the right one, and now I have no keypad sounds. You have to persevere, or the person dealing with you will lose interest, as mine did, and several times told me I'd have to go back to the provider. I just kept begging. It can be done. Alas, I didn't note it down. To play a just recorded video clip it is about half the screen, can't make out anything, dunno how to make it larger, lost interest. Other huge complaint, from one who texts a lot, is there is no apostrophe! ' Like that. Look through the book, there it aint! And mine is going back as it doesn't hold any sent messages. The only disadvantage to the k800i is the size- quite chunky but in my opinion the d900 sacrificed too much of its potential to be the best phone for features just for being the slimmest phone on the market. what killed it was also how simalar it is to the D600. ok so the menu is displayed differently but i find it fiddly and some what irritating to use. Reviewed by Paul on 04/03/2007 Very, very disapointing. The camera is as good as useless. The shutter lag makes taking a photo of anything moving even slighty almost impossible and the results are very poor and rarely in focus. The Camera is a lot better, the display settings are really good, and the vivid text messaging is fun. The only drawback on this phone, I think, is that unlike the D500 which tells the time on stand-by mode, the D900 becomes just a blank screen. Reviewed by MR on 03/03/2007 Just returned the D900 after testing for a week and I was disappointed that I had to do so. However, the annoyances built into this phone (and probably all Samsungs) meant it did not meet the grade. Overall build quality is good if not a little flimsy. Screen resolution and viewing in daylight is very good. Very nice auto wallpaper feature which changes as you move country. However, the menu system is over complicted. Selecting a contact requires several key presses. Why? Surely as soon as the contact is highlighted by scrolling or searching, then pressing the green button should dial it as per Nokia. On the D900, it is necessary to highlight the contact, then select it, the say OK and then call! Writing a text message and then sending to a contact from the phonebook took forever! I think it should default to the phonebook instead of a number (most times I text are to people I already know). Also it keeps asking questions such as 'Send' or 'Send and Save'. In all it took twice as many key presses to send a text compared to a Moto V3. Also on the text messages, if the phone is in a dodgy reception area, the message may fail to go. Instead of storing the message away and sneding automatically when reception improves, the message has to be manually stored and then manually resent! The D900 seems to a typical example of manufacturers trying to build in too many features before they have the basic phone, address book and text messaging sorted. Rating:
Reviewed by Pete Harrison on 03/03/2007 The Samsung D900 has a very sleek & elegant design. Is very easy to use & with so many features the battery last a suprizingly long time. I own two of the limited edition red D900s which are in my opinion in a class of thier own. Rating:

Reviewed by Deeda on 28/02/2007 Had this for a day now and seriously considering returning to Orange, unless you guys can help change my mind? Don't get me wrong the phone looks great but the camera is nowhere near as good as the blurb makes out and there is another potential flaw that may be a big problem, which I'll get to later. The camera appears poor even in 'superfine' mode, the 2 mega pixel camera on my old V3x has by far superior quality and when you press the button on that it takes an immediate blur free picture! Not 2 seconds later! The big problem? I had hoped to transfer a lot of my pics from my V3x to the D900 but it won't let me. Something about the image not being supported. This is the same when transferring pictures from the D900 to the V3x. I've never had this problem with any other phone. Swapping music files is ok but picture wise the D900 does not appear to be compatible with any other brand. Can this be rectified? If not I'll have to give the Sony k800i a try. Rating:

Reviewed by aliyah on 28/02/2007 this d900 phone is excellent. very efficient and has all the required functions and features. however, this phone, i hoped, would have been an improved version of my old d600 but it is extremeley similar with just a 'better' camera.the only difference is the appearance-which looks like a squished version of the d600. the camera is meant to be 3 megapixel but seems of a poorer quality than the d600 which had 2 mega pixel. still a good phone though Rating:
Reviewed by L V S on 28/02/2007 The worst reception of any phone I have ever tried (Motorola, Sony, Siemens). Simply shuts down if you don't use it for a couple of hours and freezes. Text messages are suddenly lost while you are typing them. No facility to automatically save text messages when sent. I tried a replacement from 02 and had the same problem. Two friends of mine also find this phone has very very poor reception and also freezes and loses messages. I have returned mine permanently, which is a shame as it looks fantastic and is light and stylish. Rating:

Reviewed by Marc on 27/02/2007 Had my D900 for a month now. Good points 1 Good looking, easy to fit into top pocket 2 Reasonably easy to use (texting is fidly) 3 Lots of good features (most of which I do not use) Bad Points 1) Battery life (it will never charge fully unless you continually unplug and replug in the charger) 2) Camera is awful It wont take a decent shot unless subject is dead still, and yes i have changed settings 3) No voice activated dialling. This means with a bluetooth headset you still have to fiddle with phone to make a call. This is a major flaw on a phone of this calibre. In summary, I would give the phone 6/10 but in hindsight would not have chosen it. Rating:

Reviewed by Lewis on 26/02/2007 Fantastic phone, really is very very sexy and has all the functions I need (I don't use radio as I go to work on the Tube, and I spend enough time at work without reading email all the time at home too!) The camera is brilliant (although it would be nice if if took photos faster) and it's very easy to use - and this from a committed Nokia-addict. The only downside is that I bought a 1Gb MicroSD card as the 80mb internal storage fills up quickly - and the maximum that works is apparently 512mb; this is nowhere in the handbook or Samsung's website, but I emailed them and they confirm it. So don't get a 1Gb card, get a 512mb and enjoy having the sexiest phone out there :) [Editor's comment: We have tested the Samsung D900 with a 1 Gbyte card and it worked fine, so there must be a problem with yours.] Rating:
Reviewed by villan in brum on 25/02/2007 Firstly this phone looks and feels great its super slim and at the same time feels expensive in your hand. The camera isnt all that good for a 3meg in my opinion its just average and the video isnt great either but its still reasonable.Theres still some bad points about this phone lack of being able to change the themes is bad so you cant really change the phone to how you want it theme wise plus the interface isnt great you cant just get to where you want to go but it could just be me other ppl may find it easy to navagate round. It dont except buisness cards and the wap is really slow plus you cant set your message tone to a mp3 etc you just get 4 message tones and thats it.In all i think its still a nice phone and if your use to the samsung interface then its great but if you want to be able to have different themes and change things about on a phone then you are limited with this phone so ive put mine on ebay and ive decided to go with the sony w810i but ill still give the samsung 3 stars cheers Rating:
