Samsung D900 Review

Rating:
Date: 28/11/2006
The Samsung D900 is a beautifully stylish and ultra slim top of the range camera phone. It is a sliding phone with the dimensions of 103.5 x 51 x 12.9 mm and weighs just 85g. It has a high quality magnesium surface in a sleek black finish.
The phone has a great 3 megapixel camera with 4 x digital zoom and video capabilities allowing you to record in MPEG4 format. It also has autofocus meaning that the camera will automatically focus on a particular subject instead of using a fixed focus distance helping to produce sharp and good quality pictures.
The phone has a TFT display viewable in bright sunlight with 240 x 320 pixels and 262k colours. This is a very good screen and among the best around at the moment.
The music player is stereo with 3D surround sound and a digital power amp supporting MP3, ACC, ACC+ and e-ACC+ formats. The Samsung D900i also has an FM radio.
The D900 has 60MB of internal memory and the option to insert an external memory card to increase the memory up to 512MB giving you plenty of room to store your songs and other files with ease.
This phone allows you to use MP3's as ringtones and supports a 64-voice polyphonic sound which means that it can play 64 notes simultaneously. The downside is that you are not able to use MP3's for your text tones, but on the upside, Samsung have made this phone capable of vibrating and ringing at the same time.
The D900 has great connectivity via Bluetooth, USB and TV-Output. Bluetooth enables you to wirelessly connect to another Bluetooth device up to 10 metres apart whilst connecting to a PC is done with a USB cable. The TV output connection allows you to view images and videos directly on a TV with the use of the document viewer as this enables you to transmit your files to a projector or present them on a TV or computer.
It connects to the internet with EDGE data transfer speeds. It is a full-function internet browser that gives you up to three times faster communication rates then GPRS.
This phone operates on a quad-band frequency so is capable of working in Europe, America and Japan. The battery life is relatively good with a standby of 350 hours.
Overall this is an excellent phone with great style and design as well as some really good features. It has an excellent camera, one of the best out at the moment, and considering that it is an ultra slim phone this is a great achievement. The MP3 player and supporting memory is also excellent. The bonus features with this phone such as the document reader and TV-Output are a nice touch, and we would definitely recommend this phone.

Features of the Samsung D900 include:

  • Camera: 3.0 megapixels with autofocus, flash, 4 x digital zoom
  • Video Camera: Video player (MPEG4, H.263, AAC), Video recording (MPEG4, H.263, AAC)
  • Display: 262,144 colours / QVGA 240 x 320 / TFT LCD
  • Music Player: MP3, ACC, ACC+, e-AAC+ formats with 3D sound and digital power amp
  • Java Games: Forgotten Warrior, Freekick, Arch angel, Cannon ball
  • Ringtones: 64-voice polyphonic ringtones, MP3 ringtones
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0, TV-Out
  • Memory: 70 MB user memory, micro SD™ External memory
  • Messaging: SMS, EMS, MMS, Email
  • Internet: WAP 2.0, GPRS Class 10, EDGE
  • Talk Time: Up to 6.5 hours
  • Standby: Up to 260 hours
  • Operating Frequency: Quad band (GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz)
  • Size: 104 x 51 x 13 mm
  • Weight: 93g

I received my phone today and have already decided to return it. I have a d500 which has a neckstrap attached to it (It comes in very useful! and I think helps stop me from losing my phone) The D900 doesn't have a hole for a neckstrap which really dissapoints me because its a brilliant phone! apart from that it's a brilliant phone

Got the D900 as a replacement for my continualy faulty D600..Got it, charged it....Had it one day.. opened the slide to respond to a text and the screen went dark and a crack has appeared!!! I had noticed when attempting to fit my sim and the battery cover how flimsy the phone seemed.. Hence why its not been anywhere near trouser pockets..Seriously unhappy with the quality of this. I've seen other people having issues with this model of phone..The 'cool' design to be thinner than anyone else is making the product unreliable....Plus the texting was still a very long winded affair Also no MP3 text alerts!!! Very poor, don't think I'll be having another Samsung!! Dazz

i perchased the d500 in january. it fab! the best phone ever, mp3 player and everthing you could want, but unfortunatly i broke it but that was my fault.overall i thought the d500 was exellent. After this i got the samsung s400i, it isnt very good at all, no mp3 or anything like that, i jus didnt like the settings at all. now i have perchased the d900, its better than the other 2 altogether, the camera is perfect 3.0 megapixels to the samsung d500's 1.3, mp3 players is fairly the same but i love the little picture when it plays.memory's not to bad but if you want more songs, pics and videos you can always but a memory card, i think that a 512mb one is around £20 so ther quite cheap but i still think that this phone should be voted the phone of the year it is exellent!

This phone is very nice, extremely slim, lots of good features, nice to use. It has the usual Samsung shortcomings regards terrible ringtones etc, but that's not so bad you can't live with it. The one thing I would fault it on is the camera. I got mine because of the camera and to improve on my existing 2meg. camera. The results were very disappointing. Very pixely in many of the snaps I took to try it out, I even took the same shots with the old phone, but overall the old Sony Ericsson beat it for picture quality pretty easily. If you don't want it for the camera, the rest of the phone is spot on.

I currently own the d900 and absoloutley love the phone. I think it cannot be beaten on appearance and thiness. However I do find that the camera is quite blurry once the picture has been taken. Apart from that it can't be faulted!

Lets get this out of the way first before I rant away. This phone is the nicest looking phone on the market and is probably one of the easiest to use. However reading some of the reviews here and after replacing mine after a few months it does have a lot of downsides. My D900 had a problem with a faulty sim reader on the phone which after being advised at a phone shop some O2 models are affected by this.My phone continually showed up no service. Also after a few weeks this phone gets boring there is not too many features and if like me you have had previous samsung models before (D500 & D600) you will be all too familar with the carbon copy(but upgraded) features. Also the lack of Video calling is a step behind other new phones. There is no problem with viewing large screen videos just hold down 1 when watching videos.Holds ok amount of music best to buy memory card. After having to replace the phone for a second time I decided to get a sony ericsson w850i had this for a month now and its fantastic doesnt look as sexy but does everything!!!! But if its looks on a phone you go for and not features then this is the phone for yo u.

I only got this phone today and I've already fell in love with it! The camera is amazing and certainly the best I've had. After all my previous phones being Motorolas I decided to make a change to a Samsung. I'm pleased to say I made the right choice, but it was close between this one and the Sony Ericsson k800i which does have a slightly better camera. However... it loses a star because the battery is always running low and I've only used it a few times and it doesn't have a large amount of internal memory (I could only fit about 15 songs on before it was full), but you can just buy a memory card I guess. Can anyone tell me how much more added space the memory card gives?

People seem to be moaning about the camera... if you are so worried about a camera the best thing to do is get a k800i. I bought the phone because its 13mm thick, light, easy to use (not tuch senitive) and looks great. If these are the things you look for in a phone buy this!!!

this is a great phone much better than that heap Samsung ZV40. The phone is light, easy to use, menu is different from older samsungs but still pretty easy The camera is excellent considering how thin this phone is. I took a picture in pitch black, and the picture came out crystal clear, for people saying it is terrible, they either, don't use the flash, or have it set up wrong. If the camera is still to bad for you, you could alway buy a digital camera, as this is still just a Phone! you can also have mp3 rintones, but not mp3 for text messages, but you can choose which tone you have.

This fone is simply one of the best i have had. I have got through a fair few phones and have just changed from the Nokia N80. The nokia was a good fone but slightly on the large side. The Lookz: Anywayz, the D900is so slim, smooth, shiny, in reality very small. It is also extremely light so you have to kep ensuring you havent dropped it. the menu's: very easy to use, most likely the same as all samsungs? (always had nokias). choice of menu in either grid or list format which is good. wide choice of settings for desktop and ringtones. (if anyone knows how to take the keypad tones of please say - mine are shaded out). plenty of games on the fone approx 8 (decent games as well- racing, tetris, sonic thehedgog, freekick soccergame etc). Camera/ Screen/ viedo: excellent sized screen very big and very bright- possibly easy to get scratched so be carefull. great resolution aswell as a 3MP camera! takes brilliant photos in the daylight. With use of a flash at night, photos arn't that good when in the dark possible 2 mp when dark. but good enough! video playback good (press 1 for full screen video shoot) mp3/ ringtones: roughly 72mb initially on the phone but i ave just put a 1gb card in for£30. ringtones are bad choiced but you can use an mp3 which leaves no problemo. message alert tones must be chosen from there list they are ok a bit "girlie" but also on the quiet side and dont always hear them go of even on the loudest setting. with a 1 gb card i can store 240 tunes which im fining hard to fill up. playback is really good with playlists of up to 30 songs. no radio which is a slight downfall. comes with a brilliant set of headfones, really decent quality well done samsung!if your songs on pc arnt in mp3/ aac then it will tae ages to put them on as you have to do them 1 at a time as they convert them into mp3 for you (song editor) Battery- so far it has been fine for me, have to charge it every other day at the moment and i have ben using it alot! hopefully when i have got over the initial shockof the brilliant fonr i will leave it alone and only use it for calls/ txts which suhd mean the battery will last for longer. the only major fault is that it says you can attach photo to contact-but you cant!!! buy buy buy buy only £200 Pay as you Talk from carphone warehouse, worth every penny and more.

Lets start off by saying that this has to be the future of mobile phones, slim, sleak, lightweight and beautifully finished in soft plastic, but thats it. Samsung have a long way to go before they can create decent software. The menus are outdated and the features are very poor. The 3.2mp camera is awful quality, with images taken inside near impossible to take without blurring/movement. I was disappointed when I started using the phone, having used Nokia and Sony Ericsson phones for over a decade it is difficult to get used to a different software layout, but the transition is made even more difficult when its being poorly designed to handle day to day tasks. Hats off to Samsung for designing the best looking and slimest phone currently on the market, but its mutton dressed as lamb as far as usability is concerned. I tried the phone for 3 days and then had to swap it, I now have a Nokia N73 and its not as sleak or lightweight, but the useability/features/quality is outstanding. Don't be tempted by looks alone !

I have a real grip with the Samsung D900 in that the memory is absolutely terrible. I had the D500 before upgrading to the D900 and I can honestly say the D900 would not have a patch in memory wise compared to the D500. I was able to take loads of picutures and video clips on the D500 and when I upgraded all I was able to get out of the memory on the D900 was 15 pics and 8 video clips. I was absolutely disugusted and more to the point disappointed with the D900 and unfortunately by then my 14 days had expired and I was unable to change it over the D600 which I should have upgraded to in the first instance. If you are like me and want the phone for pictures and video clips, plus all of the other features, I would definitely recommend you get the D600 which is an absolutely brill phone. I really regret upgrading to the D900 and even after buying a memory card I am still having problems transferring my pictures and video clips over which I now need to sort out with customer services. It has been a hassle which I never had with the D500. To say I am disappointed is an understatement and I feel it is a money racket that you have to buy a memory card. The other point I should make is the pictures are not always clear nor are the video clips which I promised would be an massive improvement on the D500 - once again not so. The D600 also supplies the television cables for watching your videos and pictures, but the D900 doesn't. For a superior phone advertising how clear the picture and video quality is, I think it should have at least supplied these with the phone also.

Having had the D500, I was surprised at the poor quality of the D900 in terms of a. sound clarity - the voices sound tinny and muffled; b. user friendliness - in stand-by mode, the D900 won't indicate whether you have received a txt or had a call as its screen reverts to black after a txt/call reached it. So if you leave your desk and return to it a few minutes later, a casual glance at the stand-by display won't tell you whether you've received a txt/call intermittently; you have to slide the phone to find out. Idiotically cumbersome. c. battery life - 2 days w/o camera and limited to only 45mins conversation and 10 txts (approximately). Summary: stay clear of that phone
