Samsung D900 Review

Rating:
Date: 28/11/2006
The Samsung D900 is a beautifully stylish and ultra slim top of the range camera phone. It is a sliding phone with the dimensions of 103.5 x 51 x 12.9 mm and weighs just 85g. It has a high quality magnesium surface in a sleek black finish.
The phone has a great 3 megapixel camera with 4 x digital zoom and video capabilities allowing you to record in MPEG4 format. It also has autofocus meaning that the camera will automatically focus on a particular subject instead of using a fixed focus distance helping to produce sharp and good quality pictures.
The phone has a TFT display viewable in bright sunlight with 240 x 320 pixels and 262k colours. This is a very good screen and among the best around at the moment.
The music player is stereo with 3D surround sound and a digital power amp supporting MP3, ACC, ACC+ and e-ACC+ formats. The Samsung D900i also has an FM radio.
The D900 has 60MB of internal memory and the option to insert an external memory card to increase the memory up to 512MB giving you plenty of room to store your songs and other files with ease.
This phone allows you to use MP3's as ringtones and supports a 64-voice polyphonic sound which means that it can play 64 notes simultaneously. The downside is that you are not able to use MP3's for your text tones, but on the upside, Samsung have made this phone capable of vibrating and ringing at the same time.
The D900 has great connectivity via Bluetooth, USB and TV-Output. Bluetooth enables you to wirelessly connect to another Bluetooth device up to 10 metres apart whilst connecting to a PC is done with a USB cable. The TV output connection allows you to view images and videos directly on a TV with the use of the document viewer as this enables you to transmit your files to a projector or present them on a TV or computer.
It connects to the internet with EDGE data transfer speeds. It is a full-function internet browser that gives you up to three times faster communication rates then GPRS.
This phone operates on a quad-band frequency so is capable of working in Europe, America and Japan. The battery life is relatively good with a standby of 350 hours.
Overall this is an excellent phone with great style and design as well as some really good features. It has an excellent camera, one of the best out at the moment, and considering that it is an ultra slim phone this is a great achievement. The MP3 player and supporting memory is also excellent. The bonus features with this phone such as the document reader and TV-Output are a nice touch, and we would definitely recommend this phone.

Features of the Samsung D900 include:

  • Camera: 3.0 megapixels with autofocus, flash, 4 x digital zoom
  • Video Camera: Video player (MPEG4, H.263, AAC), Video recording (MPEG4, H.263, AAC)
  • Display: 262,144 colours / QVGA 240 x 320 / TFT LCD
  • Music Player: MP3, ACC, ACC+, e-AAC+ formats with 3D sound and digital power amp
  • Java Games: Forgotten Warrior, Freekick, Arch angel, Cannon ball
  • Ringtones: 64-voice polyphonic ringtones, MP3 ringtones
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0, TV-Out
  • Memory: 70 MB user memory, micro SD™ External memory
  • Messaging: SMS, EMS, MMS, Email
  • Internet: WAP 2.0, GPRS Class 10, EDGE
  • Talk Time: Up to 6.5 hours
  • Standby: Up to 260 hours
  • Operating Frequency: Quad band (GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz)
  • Size: 104 x 51 x 13 mm
  • Weight: 93g

My D900i has given me four years of trouble free service, until I dropped it last year, since when it has been cutting out ever more often and now needs replacing. Trouble is, what do I get now? I like slide phones that are thin and light, I just text and call on it, but that doesn't mean I'll settle for something chunky, sad and cheap looking. It needs to hang onto the signal like a dog with a bone as I live rurally. It needs to show 3 or 4 tel numbers under the name and if it could e-mail, heaven! Oh, and payg. The relentless march of technology has left room for a niche manufacturer to move in here I feel. It drops one star only because the camera is truly dreadful.

Have gone back to this phone as it beats most others hands down, including the G600 and U600, neither of which are quite as good. Everything is easy to use and the camera is a corker! My young son loves his too. If you could put themes on it would be great, but this is the only downside and can definitely live without for the fact its outstanding in every other way. The music sounds great, better than any other phone too. Highly recommended.

Reading these other reviews is like stepping back in time. I'm writing this in January 2010, still faithfully using my original D900 some three years after buying it. I like it so much I won't swap it for a newer model. Why replace a classic? I've bought a spare model, identical, which is sitting in the cupboard in case the one I've got ever breaks or gets stolen. The D900 is the best ever mobile phone.

Hello I just bought a samsung D900 ultra model the slimmer one for £30 in the post off ebay. Its a nice mobile phone everything seems good on it so far. Only problem I have noticed so far you cant put custom text message tones on there. Unless somebody changed the firmware or made something that can. Thats the only thing I find fault with so far at the moment. I would give it 5 stars but it gets 4 stars for the reason above. Also looking online this seems to be the biggest problem with the phone something so simple yet modern phone you cant change!

This is a good phone, I've had mine for over two years and it's still going, showing it's age a little though. I think a lot of the people giving it bad reviews just haven't figured out how to use it. It has a lot of features which aren't even mentioned in the manual which can make it quite confusing but they can all be figured out. For example, the guy who said his photos came out as mirror images, this is a feature you can get by pressing one of the volume buttons, the other button turns the image upside down. I don't know how people are managing to wreck them as no paint or anything had dropped off mine. The screen did break a while ago, but it was fairly cheap to fix at a corner shop. For taking photos, the sensor takes it's time, people getting blurry photos are moving the phone before it's done taking the photo. The charging connector is starting to wear out, so I think that'll be the end of this phone, but it's lasted very well and still looks cool two and a bit years on.

to all those reading this review DONT BUY THIS PHONE!! i bought mine one year ago and it broke just a few days ago , the screen would not turn on anymore.I know a lot about samsung phones as out family owns 6. But buyer beware this phone is riddled with faults and poor quality materials. 1. The keypad is absolutely horrible to txt on a it is too wide and too hard to press down and the result is CRACKED key pads. After about 2months the paint off the keypad started coming off and soon later the pads started cracking, i do not have long fingernails either. 2.The "ok" button in the middle of the keypad is an absolute pain in the butt, as often i would take the phone out of my pocket and find that the internet had been running for ages thus taking most of my credit. 3.The phone does not save sent messages! arrrgh in order to have messages that u sent you have to save each txt MANUALLY and to do this you have to open up the menu for each txt and clicked a few buttons for it to save wen sending. 4.The phone has an odd habit of shutting off at its own will and this seems to be a common occurence with most samsung phones. 5.the pridictive t9 is horrible 6.the charging slot is on the RIGHT side of this stupid phone so txtn while the phone is chargin is insanely annoying and the charging end keeps bpping out on the right 7.THIS PHONE DOESNT SLIDE WELL. i had always wondered if it was just my phone but my friend also has the D900i and trust me it is by far the worst "slide" phone made by samsung . Its stiff and so u end up haviung to press quite hard down on the screen and a lot of users have ended up having their screen broken so all in all just wanted to say this phone lasted me a year bought new.

I have owned two (I washed the first one, still with the second) and on each after about 2 weeks the slide mechanism has become awful. Its so stiff, you really have to force it to open it! I've sort of become used to it, but whenever a friend tries to do it, they simply can't, i have to do it for them! Good features though, only problem is that the camera really doesn't have auto focus, if i shake my hand even a little i get a very blurry photo that is almost indecipherable!

I HATE this phone. Previously I've had Nokias and Sonys and find the Samsung menu system very unintuitive and clumsy. Have had to refer to the manual several times to work out how to do simple functions such as select predictive text (*key) and select between different suggested words (0 key). Connecting to PC to view pictures/upload music was a nightmare, doesn't have standard small USB connection, you have to use the supplied software disc and cannot just view the files as a folder using a simple driver as with other phones. Also, you have to have the USB set to 'modem' in the phone menu, something I had to surf user forums on the net to find out, as it's not in the manual. Photos are almost as poor quality as my prevous 1 mp. All in all this phone has been a total pain, without any great advantages, and I will not be getting a Samsung again.

The 3 megapixel camera is NOT high standard and in certain lighting it is appauling resulting in grainy pictures. Another fault with this is that using the camera kills the battery in no time and when recording videos, the result is pixelated. I find i have to charge this phone every day, 2nd if i'm lucky, even when i do not use the camera.

Nice looking phone but had problems with both my original D900i phone AND the replacement phone with the screen freezing up. As a one off I would have passed it off as a dodgy one but with the replacement also having the same problems I would say it's a design fault. Easy to use but camera not very good as there is a good delay in the capture of the photos meaning the phone has to be held still until the pic has saved which is a pain in the arse. Video capture rubbish, sound quality rubbish. When I press OK to stop my morning alarm the camera screen opens up for some reason (as it did with the original again.. Design fault?). Battery port stopped working on the original phone, charger is difficult to put in... Very fiddly. Problems with the WAP too, sometimes it will connect and is FINE, then it stops working for two weeks which is quite frustrating. I am on O2 and although this might be a network fault I have to mention it, I can't get a signal, really struggle in a lot of places and it means that calls get cut short. Then I'll be writing a text and the signal will go, then a symbol will appear showing I have no signal and no matter where I go after that to actually GET a signal it will not pick one up again until I have turned the phone OFF then back on again. Great fun when you haven't the space on the phone to SAVE the text to come back to it. Hate to slate as it really is a cute phone, just a shame about the faults really.

Hey! I have had this mobile for a year now and it is VERY good. It isn't to heavy and is easy to slide, and fits perfectly in your pocket. If you are thinking of buying a nice cheap mobile this is proberly the one for you. Well i would reccomened it. I have droped it millions of times and even wacked it against walls! and it still has not broke. Even when it is raining it don't get ruined. It is like imposible to break. Camera - The camera is NOT exellent, but is still useble. It attemps to go abit fuzzy after awhile and the lighting is not brilliant unless you are out side when it's not dark. But dont let that stop you from buying this mobile. Bluetooth - The bluetooth is very good on the phone. It is fast and when putting photos on the computer, it is even faster. It is ament to be one of the best bluetooth networking. Battery - The battery on this phone will last up to about 4 days. But even when it is on low battery, it last for another day and abit. Memory - As you don't get a memory card with it, you will have to but one unless you can only get one song otherwise. But it still hold up to about 50 pictures which is a resonable memory for a mobile at this price. It can hold about 100 text messeges and loads of contacts aswell. Internet - Well the internet is quiet low quality. But still works perfectly fine. You do have to pay for internet use but it isn't the end of the world. Other - You get a reasonale amount of entertainment, such as Java Games. But some of them are only demo's. But you can buy them for a good price. Also with this mobile you get Alarms, Calculator, Clock, Converter, Timer, Stopwatch etc.. Messeging - The keypads are very well made. They are spaced out and easy to press. Anyway, as it is one of the thinest sliders you can buy and is at a exellent price. I would reccomened this mobile to anyone who wants a easy to use, cheap and non breakable mobile phone. You can always ask me if you have any questions. I no quiet alot about this mobile. =]

Is it usual for a samsung to 1) have no smileys and 2) switch round your sim card contents so that the 'surname' or second word comes first? Not big things I know, but they get under my skin and I want to know if this is just my model or Samsungs in general. Please help!

This is a pretty good phone, just about everything is great about it, and i have only managed to find a couple of downsieds - and they are, that the message tones are dead cheesy, the ringtone is quite quite and i dont like the style of predictive text it has (it doesn't give you alternative words and it uses words like 'if' instead of 'he' and 'on' instead of 'no'. **AND IF YOUR A COMPLETE MUPPET LIKE ME AND YOU LEAVE IT IN YOUR TROUSERS WHEN IT GOES THROUGH THE WASHING MASHINE, YOU KNOW THAT IT "WILL" STILL WORK!!!! I'M NOT KIDDING!!!!** Apart from that it a rather impressive, easy-on-the eye, little phone. However, after recently buying the Sony Ericsson W595, i have now been officially converted to sony ericssonism, i much prefere sony's layout, predictive text, menu system, message tones and the volume of ringtone. Personally i would much rather have a Sony Ericsson.

OK, so I'm about 2 years too late for this phone but after reviewing all the newer Samsung range (& deciding I didn't want touch buttons or screen) and features vs. price (esp. here in Thailand) I decided to buy a D900i. Having had a Sony w800i for the last 18 months, I was ready for a change and Samsung have a little nostalgia for me as I had one of the first Samsung SGH-600 in London (showing my age there!). Anyway, after having to replace my phone on day 2 due to a defective keyboard light (minus half a mark for lack of quality control!) I've been busy re-acquainting myself with Samsung menus & OS, importing my address book and few wallpapers and screen savers etc. Initial observations; (1) It may be thinner than the W800i/SGH-600 but it's quite a large flat handset - might not be ideal for the ladies. (2) After first charge and a lot of use for set-up my first battery charge lasted only 1.5 days - let's hope this improves after 2nd & subsequent charges (it's supposed to with Li-On batteries. We'll see. (3) You CANNOT assign MP3 as Message Alert tones. I'm still searching for a site to download some additional options though (4) You CANNOT set SMS to automatically create a Saved Message upon Send - you have to use the Save and Send option instead. Not a huge deal but not user friendly in my opinion. It should've just been a configurable SMS option (5) There is no list of previous SMS recipients (ala Sony) so you have to choose from the Contacts each time - unless replying to an SMS of course. Again, not so user friendly (6) T9 Predictive text isn't bad but initiating the option for spelling new words isn't totally intuitive and I haven't found a way to edit my Dictionary/List of Words yet. I'll keep looking (7) User Manual isn't very comprehensive. Forum's on the WWW have pretty much saved me - esp. For e.g. USB connection via cable and Address Book sync via USB on Mac OS X. Samsung (apparently) say they don't support Mac but you can get third party plugins that do the job (8) Call quality doesn't seem to be as good as the Sony and even full volume isn't that loud (& I have removed the protective sticker from the screen!) (9) Using T9 to search contacts (one feature not on my Sony!) doesn't let you scroll through options for a given set of keystrokes (as it would in an SMS) e.g. 'Mile' to 'Mike' etc. What a shame! (10) There doesn't seem to be a way to distinguish between Wallpaper and Screen Saver or to change the Start-Up screen sequence. With the Sony, you could customise them all individually. Pity. (11) I've tried the camera (briefly - using all the best resolution settings) and I find the auto white balance a bit harsh. It also seems to take rather more darkness than I'm used to for the automatic flash to activate. For the rest, I like the look and feel of the phone. The overall build quality seems good esp. slider mechanism. I reserve judgment on the durability of the chromed plastic front. I've read that it can look shabby after a couple of months but I suppose it depends how you treat your phone.. Right now The D900i and I are just starting our relationship. So, there will be some 'settling in' required. Same as with any new phone. They all have their quirks. I need to say right now that the W800i was not perfect in my view either, nor my previous Nokia come to that. I guess it depends how you 'think'. They all have unique selling points and someone should design an OS that takes the best features from them all. That would be a great phone.. I'm a Usability Consultant - gis a job Samsung!

It's a really good looking phone and lots of things to really personalise it and make it your own. I only got the phone because of the 3megapixel camera, but was really dissapointed with the quality, all the pictures i took were in mirror image. The only reason why i got rid of it was beacuse it had some problems: would stop turning on unless connected to the mains (even if battrey was full) and bleeping for no reason spontaniously. Don't be fooled by: the long battrey life, it's NOT true. The most i ever got out of it was 3 days, despite the claims of 10 days. I wouldn't reccomend it.

I have had this phone for nearly a year now and it is brilliant! it is a phone i would recommend if you dont want anything to flashy. In the time I have had it I have droped it hundreds of times and it still looks brand new! The camera is not the best you can get but dont let that hold you back.Battery life is excellent! it lasts for ages exspecially when it starts flashing no battery that will still last over a day.You can hold a resonable amount of pictures on the phone and vidios. But you cant get many songs on the phone. The bluetooth is very fast for a great price. You can always ask if you have any questions :) .

I got the D900 second hand from a mate. She used it for a year, but when I got it, it was still in brilliant condition! The Features are very good, and the Camera is brilliant! Over the Years I have dropped it 100's of times, but it still works perfectly. The only thing that finished it off was the washing machine! Seriously though, very good phone. Try it, and you will see what I mean.

A perfectly decent phone. big screen, slim, lightweight and performs all its phone functionality well. It's very fragile though, not for tradesmen. and for me (on vodafone in hants/surrey, london and leeds UK) the phone signal is always very bad, especially indoors, even though it claims to be good signal the line cuts out a lot of the time and is quiet. there are a couple of bugs on it. if you sent an SMS from the phonebook it will always say "sending to" the name at the bottom of the current screen in the phonebook, even if you sent to one of the other 2 on the screen. this was in the D600 too. transferring photos to my computer sometimes freezes at 99% on certain files, which can never be recovered. i suspect there's a problem with the flash memory chip that's causing files to repeatedly become corrupted.

I remember, when the D900 first came out, i really really wanted one because at the time 3 mega pixels for a camera was a lot. However when i finally bought one, i was very disappointed with the camera, as its almost impossible to take a non blurry picture. I also don't like browsing through the files on my memory card, and how i have to copy files to my phone from the memory card to use them. However, it's fairly cheap, but there are better options out there.

Also other little niggles - unable to rename the alarms so if you forget what the alarm was for then then phone doesnt tell you ! Also cant use ring-tones for message alerts. Very boring. But other than that its capable enough.

Was quite pleased woth the D900 at first but am disappointed with Samsung customer service. Tried to get warranty repair as phone wasn't charging after only 10 mths. Was told no repair as it was physical damage ,(contact faulty) . How can you pyisically damage a charging contact ? I have had several phones over the years and have not had this problem before. I asked advice from a friendly phone shop guy in town and he has had a few Samsungs with the same problem. Am suspicious, as a friend warned me her samsung was the same and they quoted water damage !! No way was her phone ever near water. Will never buy another samsung .
