Panasonic GD87
Product Rating
The GD87 is Panasonic's first digital camera mobile phone. The camera has 4 modes (Full Colour, Black and White, Sepia and Negative), a digital zoom, Night Shot Mode and a framing function. Pictures can be saved as screensavers or sent via MMS. A nice feature (missing on some other camera phones) is that you can attach a picture to an entry in your phone book, so that person's picture appears when they call you. Neat. The Panasonic GD87 has an excellent display with 65,000 colours, ideal for use with the camera. The display is TFT and is therefore of higher quality than many other phones on the market. The GD87 also features a small external display, which displays details such as the caller's identity.
Features of the Panasonic GD87 include:
- 65,000 colour display
- Built-in digital camera (110k resolution)
- Polyphonic ringtones (16 voice) plus recordable ringtones
- Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS)
- WAP 1.2.1 (over GPRS), email
- Predictive text messaging
- 5-way navigational key
- Phone book (200 names & numbers) with pictures
- Infra-red modem
- Wallpaper & screensaver

Reviewed by tracey on 08/05/2010 I've had My Panasonic since September 2003. It was my second mobile & it's still going as well as the first time I used it. I can still get batteries for it in my local market,so it's staying with me 'til I can find another phone that suits me.I'ts still 'alive & kicking' after over 70,000 miles of my travels up and down the country visiting family & friends. So I expect it'll outlive some of these others that are on sale now.Well done you guys!! Rating:

Reviewed by Mairead on 08/07/2007 I had this phone for 2 years! Recently i was reading my messages and it switched off on me! It wont turn back on now and before it broke, it occasionally switched off when flipped down too fast! Also it has poor battery life, only lasts about one day! And it is very big and there are no good features on it! All it has is the basic MMS, SMS, e-mail. colour screen, camera and Infrared! It does not have videos, MP3's or Bluettoth! It is quite a good phone though for people who will just use it for calls, messages and a few camera pics! Overall it is an OK phone! Rating:
Reviewed by Grimmy on 24/06/2007 Early version - pre A22 software had a bug whereby when the message tore is full, the phone could fail to boot up. The switching off problem was related to Orange enabling thier 3G network! The GD87 and X70 did not know how to handle the 3G Nbr system messages , and assumed a software error, a number of errors later, it would decide to reset itself to cure the problem! Shame, but Orange didn't really want to help panasonic fix the problem as they would have looked bad having not tested the handset in the new network configuration. Rating:
Reviewed by Scatman on 15/06/2007 The GD87 from Panasonic, was the best of the 2 camera-phone Pioneers. Early versions of software - pre A22 had a problem whereby if the datastore was full, it could overwrite the bootcode and when you turn on, gives Sim Error. The main problem with the Orange version, was that in late 2003 Orange began enabling 3G basestations. The identity of these sites were passed to the GD87 in the System Information messages from the GSM network. GD87 had been designed before the outline for these info messages had been released, and handled them as 'errors' A number of 'errors' causes the phone to reset its software to try and rectify the situation. The X70 also used the base code block from GD87 and suffered accordingly. Tough on panasonic, as these were pretty good products otherwise, and an example for software coders on how NOT to handle unknown software messages!! An ex-Panasonic Mobile employee. Rating:

Reviewed by Claire on 05/02/2007 I have been using this phone for 4 years now, and that's a long time for a mobile phone. It's a very good phone, both in terms of reliability and in terms of looks and ease of use. I have changed the battery about 3 times now I think, but that's a standard in every phone I believe. It is only of late that it switched itself off a couple of times, but given the amount of bumps & falls it recieved in the last years, I won't complain. Rating:

Reviewed by Chris on 02-08-2005 I bought this phone second hand from a dealer a year ago. The screen quality is fantastic, I have never seen one that comes close to it since. It is very easy to use and takes great pictures. This is where I encountered my first problem, getingthe pictures onto my PC was impossible , the infra red would send to other phones but not to my PC and the data cable doesnt work due to a software fault. I decided I could live with these problems but then it started crashing all the time and nowit wont even turn on longer than 5 seconds. All in alll it could of been a great camera phone but let me down by being very unreliable. Rating:
Reviewed by franki on 26-06-2005 I have had this fone 2 years and dropped it about a million times and it still works fine. The camera is great and never blurs. You can store 200 texts and if it ses SIM ERROR then its come loose or somethin. After a year or so the battery needs to be charged every 3 days but all fones are the same. You can store loads of pics of good quality (200) and 800 numbers. This is a great fone one of the 1st camera fones and just because its been out a while its still better than some of the new fones. It has never failed me! Rating:
Reviewed by R-J Woods on 23-01-2005 This phone is ideal for the average workman, it has all the features a workman could ever need however would be much improved with bluetooth technology. The screen reolution is fanatastic and the camera is amazing in sunlight and ok in white light or spot light. However only satisfactory in cream or artificial light. It has excecelent function and the weight is satisfactory, however the size could of been slightly reduced during design. Also for the starting price this phone was very expensive but does the job and all the functions work to a standard of quality. I would recomend this phone to anyone working in a work area where interaction is comman and a lot of fun is present i.e a quarry or mecahnics workshop? Rating:
Reviewed by Ana on 26-08-2004 On monday I'll have had the phone for just about a 1 year and it is a good little phone had no problems withit so far except taht i can't download ringtones or pictures or anything for it or it sends a delete message that is sort of the only downfall and my inbox isn't very big s i can't store a lot of messages and the ringtones aren't really that great but besides that it is a good little phone you may difenitly buy one for your self Rating:
Reviewed by Richard Smart on 21-08-2004 Excellent features, such as camera, 65k colour screen, etc, but unreliable. Mine cuts out in the middle of calls, even when the reception shows 5 bars. Can't find a data cable for it either. Panasonic needs to work on the basics of why people want to use a phone. Rating:
Reviewed by Rob on 17-08-2004 At first I was having loads of problems with this phone. Sometimes it would just freeze or turn itself off when I wasn't doing anything. The shop didn't want to know anything about it, because I'd missed the 30 day return period, but I persisted and eventually they sent it off for repair (some kind of software upgrade I think) and now it is much better. When it works properly the phone is great. The camera is excellent and there are lots of other good features too. Battery life is fine. If the phone had worked properly from the start I would have given it 5 stars, but as it is, it only deserves an average rating. Rating:
Reviewed by David Bushell on 11-05-2004 The best mobile I've owned for 2 main reasons; super clear reception (far better than the T610 I couldn't live with and had to give back) and a very good quality camera. Most current mobile cameras are almost useless, not so with the Panasonic, I've had it over 12 months & still haven't seen a better one. For its generation I have to give it 5 stars. Rating:

Reviewed by Jonathan on 12-05-2003 This phone is fantastic. Great features and functions, I'm using the phone on Orange that come with the latest software firmware (I heard there were quite a few problems with earlier versions of firmware). The pictures are great quality, if a little small. It's not designed to be a digital camera for a PC so if you dont expect full size high res pictures you won't be disappointed. The pictures are great for it's intended use (picture messages). Great internet access with a choice of either WAP or GPRS access. If you get yourself a connection cable you can transfer midi music files to use as ringtones and save yourself #3 a time for a ringtone Rating:
