Reviewed by nottmbantam on 22/10/2009 Right - I've now had this phone for four months. When I first got it, I thought it was great and gave it five stars, but now four month down the line, I'm ready to sell it and move on from Nokia. I bought it sim free so it's not locked to any network, which means I can access the newest Firmware upgrades as soon as they are out. THe last one was in August (v12) but since then, we have been waiting for v20, and believe me - it is needed. My phone freezes if I take more than a few phone calls a day - the caller will hang up, but the screen just hangs. No other option but to re-boot. I'm really hoping the new FW can sort this out. But really, my main gripe is with Nokia themselves. THey have been very slow in bringing out the new FW. I use a Mac, and the iSync programme will not work with this N97 - basically due to the software on the N97 being such a mess, it simply will not work with iSync. Most otehr things work well, esp Opera Mini 5 Beta version, it's really nice to use, and I use it very frequently. There are however MAJOR hardware issues too. THe GPS is huge issue, with many N97 owners reporting their phone's inability to get a signal fix. THis has to be repaired physically - no software fix. In addition, the camera lens cover is widely reported to actually SCRATCH THE CAMERA LENS! How absurd is that? Again, a hardware fix. I really do think I bought a phone that's going to be phased out very very soon. I do like the physical keyboard though, and have got used to the layout, so will def want that on my next phone. However, due to Nokia arrogance and ignorance of its customers, I really do not want another Nokia device. My advice - Samsung i8920i or the SE Satio ( both Symbian ) . Possibly the new Motorola Droid ( Android ) . Only the Motorola has the physical slide out k/b. THere is of course the Nokia N900 but I don't want to even talk about that! Good Luck Rating:
Reviewed by John on 21/10/2009 I dont know why this phone is getting such a hammering in so many reviews listed here. I always had Nokias and this is by far the best phone they have made in my oppinion. It does take some time to get used to but it is well worth the effort and I love it.It has everything I want in a phone and I wouldnt swop it for anything. Yes it is pricey but you normally get what you pay for and this phone os no exception. Rating:
Reviewed by Mocha on 20/10/2009 I've had this phone for a while and it's been ok but PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE IF YOU INTEND TO TRAVEL ABROAD AS THERE IS NO SIMPLE WAY TO DISABLE DATA ROAMING AND AVOID PHANTOM CHARGES. I'm currently incurring about 3 euros a day travelling in Poland and I don't know what to do. Seems its a common problem with all the Nokias unlike the iphone and android phones that have one-click solutions. Stupid Nokia. Rating:
Reviewed by Steve on 18/10/2009 I've had my N97 for two months now, and must be really lucky compared to all the people having problems with it. I too previously had N95 8gig, and it was the best phone I'd ever had, and got better with firmware updates, as will N97.My phones worked great, put loads of apps and themes on it, email , calender, camera, video player and music player all work great (Over 20 gig of music and video installed) The qwerty keyboard works great, screen superb and no problems with camera lens cover so far. It's not perfect, the speakers haven't got the same volume and quality of the N95, I think the Camera could be better and the whole touchscreen experience will improve when V2.0 firmware is released, but it is a first class handset/mobile computer and I love it !!
