My husband's gave up less than 12 months into our 18 month contract, mine takes 15 seconds to open a text. 15!!! It might not sound like forever but if you get more than one text in at a time it's forever. I'll never buy a Nokia again, after having the N95 for a day and then getting this, no chance. Rating: ![]() Reviewed by linda on 24/01/2010 if you want a 5mp camera, a calendar that syncs with outlook 2007 and shows the upcoming events on the welcome screen & easy internet access this phone is fanatastic (that is all I wanted it for so I can't speak for the music or games side of it) but be warned - it is a delicate little flower and as I found to my cost it doesn't tolerate any moisture at all. Even walking out in the cold and coming indoors will cause moisture damage, "water ingress" as the technical term goes, which is not covered under the warranty. Look on ebay for damaged N96 phones and you will see what I mean. Having said that I am so enamoured of the phone I have bought another one and will swaddle it to protect it having learned my lesson the hard way Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by kaif riyadh on 23/01/2010 its a wosrt and worst worst model Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Dave Vale on 22/01/2010 Regretted selling my N95, thought about the 8GB as heard was good, but saw the 96 for £180 in CEX and snapped up. Not sure its as bad as many make out here. Does keep crashing from time to time. Annoying when you've just patiently waited for a large slow WAP download. But otherwise, I really like. Nice looking, but not sure as nice as the 95 nice to use. Keys a bit easier to use than the 95 tho. Pic and video storage good. Like the fast forward selection. Annoyingly doesnt store down loaded MPEG vids on the viewing wheel, but after some head scrathing, found them in the file manager. Sound quality not brill, with or without earphones. My Sony MP3 with high quality phones plugged in, far excells. Handles Nokia's large OVI mobile email package fine, and Yahoo's much smaller and quicker 'Go' email appliction. All in all pretty good, but clearly some problems. Am I keeping after 3 months. Maybe not. Local trade shop doing a carbon arte for £160. Rating: ![]() ![]() Reviewed by jennifer on 27/11/2009 I really wanted to like this phone- I love dthe N95, and the N96 has such a huge memory and a giant screen and I thought, great, it will be even better! No, no, no. Its is way too slow, even to show a short text message, takes five or ten seconds which sounds like nothing but can be extremely annoying. It sometimes for no reason doesn't ring when I get a call, or a text. I look at the screen and it says I have a missed call or new message, but it was in my pocket! No other phone has ever don ethat to me. It's very sore on battery life if you leave any application running. Its a bit plasticky for so dear an item, isn't it? Its screen often freezes if you get a call or a text while listening to the MP3 player on it, and everything has to be shut down and brought up again to return the call or answer the text. It cannot do life blog, which was dead handy. As was the N95 side button tat took me directly into my photos, rather than having to go into gallery and from there select from which folder and so on. Direct was alot handier. It is alot of small things like this that add up to a badly thought out upgrade tat is nothing like as good as the old N95, which i will probably just go back to though I will miss having the 16gb memory. Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Alpha Tomasowa on 18/11/2009 I bought mine on January 2009, and like all the options the phone has. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to the hype at first, and this was mainly due to the lack of firmware update. The latest firmware update is only found in Nokia Europe website, and took some time to track. But once that was done applied [some 130Mb worth], it became the cellphone I now love. There are some troubles still, the most significant is lack of functionality with video ringtones. The only ones that work are those that come from Nokia, and not all times. All in all, I think this phone will suit me for at least another year. Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Ian H on 23/10/2009 The N96 is remarkably the worst phone that I have ever owned: slow software, crap battery, keyboard designed for child-size fingers, multiple clicks to use any software etc etc. I have just spent an hour trying to download photos to my PC. The Nokia software cannot identify the phone, however, keeps telling me that file transfer is happening. On another topic, I have read a number of times that for some owners the battery lasts 2-4 days. I do not know how you have configured your phone but mine barely lasts a day and that is only using voice and text and no other features. I have also had a replacement battery which has made no difference to the problem. I am writing this review as an alternative to smashing the phone with a hammer. Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Richard - London on 22/10/2009 I can only mirror Adam below. It's the worst phone/gadget/product i've ever bought. I've applied all the firmware updates under the sun. I barely use it and still when i do decide to give it a chance, it flops, whilst using as a phone, a camera, on the internet. BBC iplayer has never worked it doesn't like just being on sometimes. It freezes and has to have battery taken out left to have a little sleepy before restart...ah bless. Connection errors a plenty and i live in central london so coverage isn't an issue Total Junk and whats more so is 3 customer service. Don't bother with either. Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Adam on 20/10/2009 DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE! it is awful!!!!! I had this phone for just under a year now and i just can't take it anymore, slow is an understatment!. For example if you need to dial 999 you will probs have to wait 10 minutes sometimes for it to load, or it will freeze and you will have to restart your phone, then wait another 5. NOT a good thing in an emergency. Ive tried ring friends on nights out and for the whole night Ive been unable to phone/text them to see where they are because more than one person will text me whilst doing this which = crash! (what a suprise). You cannot run more one thing at once, for example writting a message whilst listening to your favorite music. 9 times out of 10 you will probs result into taking your battery because its crashed. The camera is good....but you maybe aswell go and buy a camera from Argos or something while you wait for the camera load it would be quicker. These are only a few problems out of many I did own a vodaphone one maybe thats why but I cant see any other network being better, my friends has on o2 and he hates it just as much as me. Nokia for me you have absolute let me down and Nokia should disgusted for what a pile of poo I and many many other have wasted their money on.I will never buy a Nokia EVER EVER EVER again and i will always refer people to a different make of phone if they ask for my knowledge on Nokia's (unless they get say a 3210 there easily the best phones by them) BUT ok the positive side!!!! it makes an excellent paper weight on my computer desk now that its not doing anything Rating: ![]() Reviewed by charlotte on 19/10/2009 had this phone 6 months, seems like forever! i've sent it back 3 times. keeps crashing and turning itself off. the battery life's rubbish too i've had to buy another battery to see if it helps, signed up for an 18 month contract too! bad move! Rating: ![]() Reviewed by jay on 04/10/2009 This is far and away the worst phone that I have ever owned. The only thing worse than the phone is the shower of a network provider that provided it. Don't go with 3! Due to 3's woeful level of customer service, I dealt with the constatnt crashing, inability to multi-task, slow response times and data loss for 6 months It eventually got so bad however, that the phone had to be returned. The phone was away for 7 days, before being replaced with a new one. I had the new phone for around 1 hour, then it began to shut down on it's own. After less than 24 hours, the new phone was returned and is still under repair by Nokia 2 weeks later. Clearly, my first phone was not a problem handset, it is the model that is a design fault. I believe that Nokia should refund all the hapless purchasers of their N96 that is, in short, not fit for purpose and I can safely say that it is the last Nokia phone that I will ever buy! AVOID AVOID AVOID! Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Matt on 28/09/2009 This phone is shockingly bad! On paper you expect it to be excellent - feature rich and a true competitor to other smart phones. But the interface is seriously buggy (even with the latest firmware), very slow, and crashes frequently (white screen of death). It's a nightmare to use and I can't wait to get rid. I upgraded from a n95 which was faster! e.g. taking a photo and scrolling through your media gallery on the n96 is painfully slow but on the n95 it's very fast. Surely an upgrade shouldn't be result in poorer performance. I'll think very carefully before buying another Nokia. I'm very disappointed! I have had this phone for 9 months now. It doesn't get "more reliable after time" as some people claim, without basis. The slowness of this phone is incredible, even minutes after powerup before I have loaded any apps. The phone is "3" branded. I have regularly updated the firmware as updates become available. The updates certainly fix whatever happens to be wrong with it at the time, but with each update comes a new set of things which don't work. Pros: Screen was brilliant til I scratched it (doh) Camera is pretty good, if that's sometihng you look for in a phone Memory capacity is fantastic - This phone has replaced my MP3 player Support for Microsoft Exchange (only useful to nerds like me) Lots of connectivity methods, which is great although far from unique Cons: Interface is painfully slow "Crashes" at least once a day (as in - have to remove battery) Interface is painfully slow Running more than one application at a time is practically un-usable Interface is painfully slow Battery life is poor (not terrbile though) About 36 hours usually An hour's drive using GPS will use an entire day's worth of battery and you could probably fry an egg on it afterwards from the heat. This phone does indeed have a huge collection of applications and broad support for many kinds of media but it is just too slow. It doesn't do much the N95 doesn't do and is considerably slower. Disappointing. The phone supports UMTS and HSDPA, making you almost as fast Internet access at home. The N96 has a Dual ARM CPU 9264 MHz processor with 128mb RAM. The device runs on the new symbian OS 9.3 S60 OS. Like the N95, the Nokia N96 with a dual slider at one end to the regular keypad and the other special multimedia keys. Video player- don't know- the phone can't handle that without crashing. Alarm clock hardly ever works (and I cant change the alarm tone) and the amount of people that say they've called me and i've had no missed call alert. Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Theo on 07/07/2009 After being majorly excited about the prospect of the N-96 with all the features i was full of anticipation for the release date. I got the phone from 3 something i now majorly regret and i'll explain this in a moment, what brought me to go onto 3 was the price of the contract it was cheaper than some of the other networks and the fact that you didnt need to pay for the i-player service. The features no question on paper are superb, yes it's not an i-phone wannabe but it didnt pretend to be, but multi tasking is the key issue you cant. The phone locks and freezes, when you're on the internet and get calls or txt's then the phone just dosent work, even with the system upgrade the same problem occurs. The first 4 months i had the phone there was no problem the phone worked well despite these problems but then things turned for the worst, the phone turned corrupt this month (late june09)as if the there was a virus on the phone so naturally you troubleshoot these problems on the net and with the nokia helpdesk but to no avail the phone just didnt work when you were calling/txting people the phone would without warning turn itself off then wouldnt turn on again for 5-10mins so imagine my frustration with paying £45 with insurance for a phone that didnt work. The phone would also for no apparent reason lose contact numbers, txt messages, phone pictures, any downloaded content the worst i experienced was for a whole day. After consulting all available sources i found out that this was a common fault with the N-96, when i took this to the 3 store expecting a quick prompt replacable phone for the N-96 like my friend did with a sony ericisson phone i was left bemused. Not only did i not get the phone but was also accused of foul play something that infuriated me, alas the phone is at the insurance company now but word of warning DO NOT go on the 3 network it's crap customer service and network coverage can be suspect sometimes. So i can only say this the N-96 was superb for the fist 4 months but just went horribly wrong roll on N-97 just not on the 3 network....... Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Paul on 02/07/2009 Hi all, I have to say after reading these comments I am surprised to find so many negative opinions!! I have been on contract with Vodafone for my N96 since January 09, and to be honest none of the issues mentioned below have affected me at all!! Perhaps most of you guys were just unfortunate to get your N96's in the very early days when they were first released, so considering I got mine in Jan 09, all those issues must have been ironed out completely!! The only reason why I will have to give it 4 stars is purely because after 6 months of having the phone it does freeze every now and again, but mainly when the battery is fairly low, and if there were several apps running at the time. But this is kind of to be expected to be honest, so I always charge the battery fully and it's all fine again. Anyway I noticed a lot of people talking about short battery life, but that's rubbish, my N96 battery goes on for a good 2 or 3 days with moderate application use as well, some people may not realise but it's very wise to keep checking all the time which apps are 'currently running', since a lot of the times the sneeky Music Player, or Internet Browser could still be active without you realising, and there goes your battery!! I'm just surprised the supposed 'N-Series' fans don't know this already, if you use to own N70's or N73'S or any other models you had to do the same on them to ensure optimum battery life. Anyway, I am still very happy with my N96, it does absolutely everything that I need, I've compared it closely with other people's I-phones, Sony Eriksons, Blackberries blah blah etc etc, and from my perspective I would never replace it with any of these other models!!! This phone has been marketed, produced and eventually rolled out as a multifunctional media device, and it certainly lives up to the definition. With all these things it really depends on people's preferences, for instance some people just have to get the latest gimmicks, i.e. I-phone, and no matter what they currently use they 'might just have to get this new gimmick' because everyone else is talking about it!! A bit like getting a new car, some people might like the new BMW Z4, but others would slag it off from word go, because they just don't like BMW Z series in general!! Well it's like that with me, I'm a huge fan of Nokia NSeries phones, and will continue to be, the N97 will be the next target, on the other hand I am admittedly not a fan of any Apple stuff, so always steered clear from Mac computers, Ipods and now I-Phones, and will continue to do that, oh I suppose it doesn't help that I work for Microsoft!! :) Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Steven on 01/07/2009 Worst phone I've ever had. They claim it is the Vodafone software yet Vodafone deny this as they have not had complaints from other users. The problem is the phone regularly freezes and the only way to fix it is to take the back off and remove the battery. It will not allow me to switch it off by the power button. If it loses signal eg going through a tunnel in a train it does not recover and I have to remove the battery to kick start it again. It is slow to re-act to commands and can sometimes take between 5-7 seconds to answer a call which results in me missing calls. It is slow to change between screens. Voice calls cause reboots so missed calls, Using blue tooth makes the device unusable as it locks within minutes of connecting. I've had to have my device replaced FOUR times and the current one still shows these faults. Its amazed me that Nokia ever released this phone in its current state. It begs the question, what kind of testing they performed on it before releasing it. Back up your data regularly as it requires a hard reset at least every month. I've had to reformat the internal memory countless times. Flash updates are thin on the ground (one to date since its release) which amazes me given the long list of obvious bugs. VERY slow. My contacts list takes 15-20 seconds to load when selected - and I have the latest firmware available to me here in Australia (12.043). The TV is useless. Like most places around the world, there is no-one transmitting DVB-H - nobody does in Australia. Nokia make a big thing in their marketing here about a feature NOBODY can use, and are unlikely to in the life of this phone (unless they take it overseas). The turn-by-turn GPS advertised is NOT out-of-the-box. Here in Australia, you get a short free-trial and then you have to pay an additional $130/year to use it! Nowhere is THAT mentioned in their marketing! I tried the free-trial and it was useless - frequently crashing the phone and constantly gave wrong directions. The user interface is, quite frankly, terrible. I gave up and bought a dedicated sat-nav instead. At least that doesn’t disappear when a call comes in! Bluetooth A2DP? Don’t even get me started! Quite simply, IT DOESN’T WORK! The music suffers from the equivalent of a disk-skip every 10 seconds or so - the music isn’t constantly streamed. As good as useless. My $200 Parrot Party Bluetooth speaker unit is useless as a result (correction: everyone else in the office can connect with THEIR phones - SonyEricsson, LG, Samsung etc. - Me, with my ‘market leading Nokia’ phone that cost more than theirs PUT TOGETHER simply won’t stream the music cleanly and sounds horrible). Nokia have short-changed their customers by supplying a phone with a grossly-underpowered processor. It simply is NOT fast enough to handle the features. I have never regretted a purchase decision so badly as I did when buying the N96. For me, it was like waiting for Christmas only to find my new toy was smashed and broken upon opening it. Nokia’s customer service has been abysmal - TWO requests for service submitted via their own website - WITH confirmatory emails from them saying someone would get back to me in 72 hours, but so far, nothing. That was 5 months ago. I guess they’re busy fighting all those other N96 fires. I'm forced to give this one star because there is no 'Zero Star' option. I dont wana make myself deaf but would like to still be able to hear the song when a bus drives past. The t.v screen gives an EXCELLENT picture, I have not downloaded any additional viewing but my phone came with an episode of topgear and doctor who on it, both of which were very watchable. It has two cameras, one as pernormal which is good enough to take pictures in a nightclub and look fine when i post the on f**ebook, the other is mounted on the front allowing lower quality pictures of yourself, without turning the phone around..... ?? no me neither... still. In general i find the menu navigation extreamly frustrating. e.g sometimes ill press menu... nothing happens.... nothing... 7,8,9,10, nothing, press it again.... nothing.... the n suddenly it goes spazzy jumping through menus and stuff for each time you pressed the button. Final point is the battery. there seems to be mixed reviews in the users here but i think some must work for nokia coz in my experiance, before and after it went down the loo, the battery is terrible. no if's or but's in my case, it is just useless. fully charged i can squeeze 2 days out of it with minimal use. if i send 20 odd texts in a day, thats enough use that it will need charging in the evening, let alone if i start running the music player etc. The indicator seems to be irrelevent as this morning i woke to find it had run flat even tho it had 3 bars, half power, on when i went to bed 7 hours prior. all in all this phoine reminds me of the early P.C's. too much in them so they couldnt cope, worked slow, froze up, rebooted randomly (my phone does occassionally turn itself off of its own accord). My recommendation?.... well im not a phone buff so i dont know what model you should buy, all i do know is it shouldnt be the N96. I have only one problem, the inability to send a text message to more than 20 people without it defaulting my text to a multimedia message. This however is a small price to pay for all the plus points it has over the N95, if you're having slowdown problems as many people here obviously are then i would suggest that software is the problem and an update will make your phone a pleasure rather than an annoyance !! I upgraded from the N95 to the N96 last week and I have to say I'm not disappointed but at the same time I'm not overwhelmed by it either. It is definately better than the N95 but only after removing the operator software and returning it to how Nokia originally meant it to be, the Symbian operating system is quicker like this. The massive capacity of the phone means it almost replaces an iPod, with 16GB internal and an optional 16GB micro SD card. The screen when viewing movies is bright and clear, with the stereo speakers been adequate (sounds better through head phones). It can play anything you throw at it, and the features are second to none. The battery life can be short, but I find with heavy use it lasts at least a full day and char ged overnight. This phone would get 5 stars if the battery was better and the design of the phone was slimmer. It is miles better than the iPhone, as I have tried one of those too and its massively over-rated. I would recommend the N96 to anyone, as its far more than a boring mobile phone. In addition, the second handset's vibrating alert failed to work. A couple of other niggles, that I would probably have been willing to put up with, had the call quality been better; the auto-rotate of the screen orientation was very tempramental and has a tendency to switch to landscape as you place the phone on a table, but is less willing to right itself to portrait, and often needs to be flipped toward you quite sharply before responding and moving the screen around. During video play, the phone crashed a couple of times on me (both of the handsets) and was often interrupted if the phone is jogged at all, and the sound was quiet even a t full volume and headphones that deafen me with my mp3 player on half volume, both of which made watching video on the tube a frustrating experience. Outside of the video play, both handsets had a tendency to freeze between screens. Battery life was also poor on the handsets I had, with normal use, it wasn't lasting a full day at the office without charging. The phone does have many good points, the picture quality for video is excellent, and huge memory, decent enough camera and other features, I am willing to accept that I may have been unlucky and sent two faulty handsets in a row, however, I was sadly disappointed with the N96 and am now having to look for an alternative. Go to the Nokia website and update the software on this phone before using it. Ensure you have the latest software will ensure a smooth fast running machine. 2. When you have finished using applications, close them down and don't let them run in the background. You can check what is open by referring to task manager or go to the menu and if a blue circle is around the top left hand corner of an icon, that means its open. Close it. I'm on my forth handset due to various faults: Countless lock ups, poor reception, inaudable ring tones etc. Performed the software updates and still experiencing 2/3 lock ups per day. Battery life has improved over my old 95 but that's about the only improvement I can think of. Having to remove the battery 3 times a day and missing calls due to system freezing is ridicules for a £500 device. Many of the issues I've read here are related to the telco updates, an issue I've experienced in the past when trying to develop software using them. Since then I always buy unbranded devices so the current problems can not all be blamed on the telcom. Mines 100% standard nokia. Nokia took 6 weeks to release the first patch for unbranded devices, after it had released to to other 96 models. Poor quality software and sub standard support. Main issues are related to using bluetooth. When used a headset the phone WILL lock pretty much every time I use it. Without BT, I can get 1/2 day out of it before needing a battery remove reboot. I use it quite hard, with 3 or 4 apps open at any time, but Symbian is easily capable of this. I used to work at Nokia and they used to test software for months on their employees, which gave them rock solid release software. Who ever is in control of quality control now was obviously asleep on this one as it seems to be at pre-beta level. I'd be ashamed to release software this buggy! It may feel tacky with a naff plastic back cover that pops off every now and then with a really poor battery life if you use the bluetooth or anything else. If its the new features, then put a bigger battery in it at least. I'm not a vodofone customer or Orange as we dont have those in the channel Islands but it does seem to be the network protocols that are different on every network that make the thing crash more than usual. The N96 still has all of the software problems of the N series, it crashes when trying to do more than one thing at a time. It freezes on approx 5% of incoming calls, requiring you to remove the battery to get it going again. reception is poor and speaker sound is muffled. I had the N80 before and hated it for most of the time I had it, the only reason I thought I would try the N96 was that surely Nokia must have fixed the buggy N series software in 2 years - but no! This is the end of the line for Nokia as far as I am concerned. I have had many different Nokia phones over the years, but I just get more and more disappointed. The only problem is that reading the other reviews, it seems to be the same for all the major phone manufacturers. So now I just want a relatively low tech phone that has good battery life, call quality and maybe a half decent camera. Basically one that i do not have to waste a lot of time on trying to fix the problems and call the various tech support lines etc.... Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Mark on 30/11/2008 Had the N96 (on Vodafone) for about a month now. I'm not new to NSeries phones, had an N70 (crap) and then a 1st gen N95 (excellent). Experience on the N96 so far? Mixed, but generally positive. Design No cover for the camera optics - scratch that glass and your pictures aren't going to look so pretty, 5MP or not. The back cover contains an antenna so we're probably going to be stuck with the original one. Might be worth thinking of a screen protector for the lens. The kick stand is a great idea and makes watching video much easier. I don't understand why that was missed on the N95 - so cheap but yet so useful. Biggest drawpack is the keypad. I'm an average sized bloke, but have real trouble with it - particularly the '*' and '#' keys, which are smaller than the others. Being smooth, there is little feedback that the buttons have been depressed. The smooth keyboard looks cool, but is less practical. OS/Software I haven't noticed any big problems mentioned by others, though I checked for and updated the firmware quite quickly. It seems quicker, but that said, it has rebooted itself on occasions for no apparent reason (although they have been infrequent). GPS Seems to be improved on the N95 - faster to get a position fix. Memory It seems huge. I already had an 8GB card I put in so I'm up to 24GB. Plenty of space for movies and TV episodes. Video The BBC iPlayer is very useful. The quality of downloaded programmes is excellent, and that makes it much improved over my past experiences of mobile TV (which have to be paid for anyway). I used to use DixX mobile for playing video, but I have always had trouble with synching the audio and the video. Using the Realplayer supplied with the N96 plays video very well, and better than any other player I have found. It won't play avi/divx files though, so the DivX application still has it's place unless you convert them to mp4. Audio Haven't played around with this too much, so can't really add anything. The headphone jack being moved from the side looks to be a smart idea though. Internet/Data Can't see any differences over the N95. Battery Life About as bad as the N95. I understand the firmware upgrade from v10 improves battery life, so if you already have the N96 upgrade it if you haven't already. I bought a spare battery for the N95, which conveniently uses the same battery as the N96. With three batteries I find I have enough power to get me through most of the time when I am away from a charger. Other issues "Share Online" is a pain. I have started to use Flickr, and I have "23*" shown on the standby screen. No idea how I get rid of it. The 3D tones function also made my ringtones inaudible, and took a while to figure out why. In my opinion, an inexcusable bug in a phone. Summary I upgraded beacause I was changing suppliers and also wanted a lot of bundled minutes. The N96 was therefore a no-brainer for me, but if you have the N95 stick with it unless you have similar reasons as the N96 is evolutionary not revolutionary, and in some respects is better. I suspect iPlayer will be rolled out on the N95 soon enough which is the biggest plus the N96 has in my view.
