Nokia N95 Review

Rating:
Date: 23/11/2007
The Nokia N95 is Nokia's most feature-rich phone so far. Perhaps surprisingly, considering its high cost, it's been at the top of the best seller chart for much of 2007, proving the public's appetite for technology. The N95 is a 3G Symbian smartphone, and incorporates a huge range of functionality. Top of the list must be the GPS satellite navigation: the N95 is the first phone in the UK to have this feature built in. Secondly, the camera is one of the very best available in a mobile phone. It's a 5 megapixel camera equipped with autofocus, digital zoom and LED flash. It is also capable of high quality video recording and video calling. The LCD display is large (2.6 inches) and is capable of displaying up to 16 million colours. As you'd expect, the N95 includes features such as a media player, FM radio, Bluetooth wireless connectivity, speaker independent voice dialling for genuine handsfree use, email support, a web browser and quadband. It also has some more advanced features: HSDPA provides accelerated 3G access at broadband speeds, and WLAN support lets you connect wirelessly to a computer or to a WiFi mobile hotspot. Memory is not a problem: the N95 4GB supports memory cards up to 4 Gbytes, whilst the N95 8GB has a massive 8 Gbytes of memory. There are 4 reasons why the N95 doesn't get a full 5 stars from us: 1) it isn't as user-friendly as an average phone and demands more from the user; 2) it's large and heavy; 3) the buttons are rather small; and 4) battery life is less than average. No phone is perfect and the advantages have to be weighed against the disadvantages. There can be no doubt that if you can put up with its faults, the N95 offers more than any other phone currently on the market.

Features of the Nokia N95 include:

  • 3G
  • Smartphone S60 3.1 software on Symbian OS, Built-in GPS
  • Camera: 5 megapixels (2592 x 1944 pixels), autofocus, Carl Zeiss optics, Tessar lens, integrated flash, 10x digital zoom
  • Video Camera: MPEG-4/3GP VGA video capture (640 x 480 pixels) at up to 30 fps with stereo audio, 4x digital zoom / Second CIF (352 x 288) camera for 2-way video calling, Movie director for automated video production
  • Display: 2.6 inch QVGA (240 x 320 pixels) TFT display with ambient light detector and up to 16 million colours
  • Music Player: supports MP3/AAC/AAC+/eAAC+/WMA/M4A with playlists and equalizer / Stereo FM radio with Visual Radio
  • Java Games
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0, Infrared, wireless LAN (802.11 b/g), 3.5 mm stereo headphone plug and TV out
  • Memory: Up to 160 MB internal dynamic memory, Expandable memory - 2 GB microSD memory cards
  • Messaging: SMS, MMS
  • Internet: WCDMA 2100 (HSDPA) with simultaneous voice and packet data (PS max speed UL/DL= 384/3.6MB, CS max speed 64kbps)
  • Talk Time: up to 160min (WCDMA), up to 240 min (GSM)
  • Standby: up to 215 hours (WCDMA), up to 215h (GSM)
  • Operating Frequency: WCDMA2100 (HSDPA), EGSM900, GSM850/1800/1900 MHz (EGPRS)
  • Size: 99 x 53 x 21 mm
  • Weight: 120 g

DON'T BUY THIS PHONE IF YOU'RE A MAC USER. Why are Nokia so short-sighted? The excellent camera and video potential are going to attract us media types who own Macs, but Nokia not only don't support OS 10 but apparently have no plans for doing so. Why you need it, of course, is to download software upgrades to stop the phone from crashing. Nokia's customer support is also appalling, I have spent a whole hour listening to their dreadful muzak without getting through. What's the point in an all-singing, all-dancing phone if in fact it only limps?

If you are looking for the latest and greatest, the N95 won't disappoint. Although a bit bulky due to all the technology stuffed inside such small space, the N95 manages to pull it all off without too much problems. As mentioned by a few people, the original firmware on the N95 is unstable. The latest update has improved it. Plenty of add-on software available under Symbian OS which makes it a fun gadget. The downside is the poor battery life (especially with lots of apps installed and those running in the background from startup) and the sliding keypad build quality, which is a rather poor after extensive use. The camera is reasonable but not worth praising. There is also some interference between Bluetooth and wireless.

This is my 2nd unit - the first lost all signal when indoors and refused to play music whilst web-browsing, and rejected the microSD card and would sporadically reset itself or freeze - stuff like that. This new unit works much more smoothly (though I am still in the 'honeymoon' period before my original N95 packed up) and much more quickly than before. I love the phone and the features but, if you (Nokia) are going to include SatNave, why wouldn't you add postcodes to Contacts and integrate the two? A free business opportunity for any keen Symbian programmers, out there. The N95 is mostly perfect but I do have a gripe - with regard to Contacts and, more importantly, the Gallery. I would like to separate my business and personal contacts, and my general interest and 'behind closed doors' photos & videos but both applications bundle them together. It means that the gallery button is the button that displays a nudie pic of my ex, when you press it, as I can't secure the 'ex-girlfriend nudie pix' folder! I have a workaround for Contacts but I do get pensive when somebody picks up my N95, in case they get an eyeful! Also, this new unit allows the radio to be played (quietly) without headphones, whereas my original made me use cans. Progress. I wouldn't swap it for a p990 but, my old p900 dealt with files and folders in a much more comprehensive manner.

This is my first review. Got this phone as something to myself for my 18th Birthday. I pre-ordered this phone. Cost me £50 for handset, and Contract (With Insurrance) came to £36 per month (700 mins 600 texts and O2 Long Weekends). This phone is perfect for all my uses. People need to remember, that this phone, is out to compete with the Apple iPhone and LG Prada. The Prada phone (Mate has it) is a poor quality phone (anyone who knows about phones will know why). Its got to be good. Here goes my unbaist view. Advantages: --------- 1. Camera - obviously, the best camera phone on the market. I have a Sony DSC-T1 Digital camera, and the quality is better on my nokia. However, the secondary camera (front one) could have been improved with auto focus, as it can be blurred sometimes on video calls 2. Usability - keys are easy to use, very friendly menu and system button structure, which is far better than N91, N80, N73, N70 (previous phones ive played with) 3. Multimedia - jam packed, far better than Sony 4. VOIP - its been well documented that Vodafone and Orange removed these features, but I use them occasionally, and its much better anything Skype or Torain could provide. Lifecam looks like a fool compared to this. 5. Office features - I use the office features, very easy to use, great ability to open files such as word and PDF. Great for mobile workers (students included) 6. Sound Quality - stereo surround sound. Call quality is exceptional 7. Aesthetic Design - its a great looking phone , great build quality 8. Satnav - saves me from having a tomtom in my car. The phone came with premium headphone speakers. The speakers arent as good as iPod, but better than Creative Zen and Microsoft MP3 players Disadvantages ----------- 1. Battery life - I play sounds for about 2 hours a day, and make about 3 hours of calls/texts time. The battery dies out within 7 hours 2. Software Gliches - I purchaed with Version 10 firmware. The main clitches I found, was when, If i played music, and got a call, the phone would re-start, and when i attempted to call them back, they couldnt hear me. *Note* If you have attempted to purchase the phone during the past 4 weeks (anytime during may) you would have found your on a waiting list. This is because Nokia attempted to correct the problem. The phone, if purchased sim free, or with no Operator Branding, WILL work fine, its when its become branded. Nokia released updated version to operators, who should then do the rest of the work themselves, however Orange & Vodafone & O2 have been very slowly getting the N95 back out again. Dunno about nokia updating the software for all phones already sold. Depends on the product ID. I Changed the Software firmware (debranded then updated my Nokia) using NSS and Nokia Software Updater. But use it at your own risk 3. Satnav - I dont know if it is just me, but the Satnav is slow to start up, and to get a satellite signal (With O2) has been slow around 3 mins. Satnav, unless you have a subscription, WILL NOT be free, and you have to pay between £7 (1 month) - £44 (3 years) for a subscription license. Something, O2 failed to mention to me 4. Box Contents - Im just being slightly picky here, but it could have done with a Cradle, like the N91 has. I get all the multimedia cables etc. but a docking cradle, similar to the iPod's or N91, would have been perfect, instead of me paying another £13 for a premium phone 5. Menu Structure - Can be improved upon, and if your useless at technology, may be difficult to adjust (especially for Sony K800I users) Overall though, I recommend people first read the Manual with the N95. Read the spec before you buy it. It clearly states everywhere on the phone a "Help" area. Use it. The manual states get the updater and update the software. Since Ive updated to V 11.0.026, the phone DOES NOT need charging within 7 hours, but now around 11 hours of my use. The Phone is faster, its as fast as a K800I (I have one on pay as you go). I have had no problems with the phone. Nokia are already planning to role out a Touch Screen N-Series phone. To be perfectly honest, I would recommend this phone to everyone who wants the best top-spec phone money can buy. Just becareful on what network you get it on (O2 and Vodafone seem to have the best deals).

What a fantastic phone!!! I spent weeks reading all the reviews on this phone. Right, let me put the record straight. The phone is brill, yes, the battery only lasts a day if you leave all the applications running, just put the phone on energy save and it will last for days. The best so far is four days! The camera is fantastic, it’s crystal clear and the video playback is better than my digital camera. The sat nav is also great. If you haven’t got a Tom Tom, don’t bother. This thing will do it all. So if you haven’t got one of these phones go out and get one. And don’t listen to all the nonesnce some people write about it.NICE ONE NOKIA

I am on my second N95 now, first one broke due to being thrown at a floor, the replacement phone started playing up within 24 hours. battery life is very poor but then again you have to think of how much is on the phone e.g. sat nav, mp3 player, camera etc. There are some cool things on there aswell, such as a barcode reader and a trip distance meter - measures your speed. The camera is very good considering its a phone camera. Both picture and video quality is excellent. The memory isnt so good on the other hand, due to the pixels on the camera the picture files are bigger - the camera can be changed a variety of megapixels - 5,3,2,0.8,0.3. The main display on the phone is very crisp with its 16 million colour screen. The sound quality is also good, and quite loud considering its a phone. The cool sliding down feature is both easy to use and practical. The Sat-Nav for what it is, is very good, i have used it and it more or less is identical in quality as leading sa t navs such as tom toms. If i had to rate this phone it would be 4 out 5

Ive just spoke to my girlfriend and I had to ring her about 6-8 times during a 15 conversation as it kept crashing and VERY often people cant hear me when I call them, the salesman in phones4u told me to switch it from handset to loudspeaker then back to handset to remidy this problem and yes this does work but are you kidding me!! State of the art phone! You are having a laugh! You struggle to bloody talk to anyone on it! I could understand the phone having problems with some of its new features but struggling to call people and when you do 5/10 they cant hear you! Nokia you should be ashamed of yourselves! How on earth did this phone pass any user tests? The battery life is a joke! The GPS is SOO SLOW that its unusable. Now I fully understand why '3' are not releasing this phone on there tarrif. The shortcut button takes ages to jump but i never use it anyway. I don't have any problems with battery life as long as you turn bluetooth, GPS off, lower the brightness of the screen, i've even turned off 3G as i don't use it. I do notice a slight improvement by running on 2G. overall i'm happy with the phone but hope that nokia brings out a higher capacity battery.

gotta say an outstanding phone, the screen size, clarity and detail. the camera of course is spot on a real development in phones. few things, the battery life, sure doesnt last days on end, but for a phone this powerful its no surprise, and for gods sake people!!! is it that difficult to just plug it in when you go to bed?!?! i also read someone is taking it back and gave it a 1 star as it slides open by itself when he is called?!?! HELLO?! WHAT PLANET ARE YOU FROM? NO PHONES DO THAT?? as for the phone being too slow- nonsence, you mke it sound like you waiting for hours for the menu to load or whatever, it really isnt that slow, bear in mind the detail and complexity if what is on the screen. next call quality is brilliant, i had a k800i and it doesnt compare to the n95. last but not least someone gave it a 1 star as the buttons were too small?! geneerally they are no smaller than other phones, i'm 6ft 2 and have large hands and have no problem with the buttons- if the buttons were bigger you'd complaining that they were too large. anyhoo overall a great phone, a spot on decision if you want something ahead of the field.

It's all very well having all the flash software in the world on it but when the battery snuffs it so quickly it becomes a pain so there is no point in using it for things like pics, music etc. My advice would be to buy more standard phone and if you want mp3's etc then buy a mp3 or digi cam with the money you save by getting a cheaper handset.

It switches itself off and on again every hour or so, the dreadful battery life renders the phone impractical to actually take anywhere, the mapping search does not work even with full addresses used for the search criteria, the wlan access works only for web browsing but not for any other applications, the video is nowhere near DVD quality as advertised and the phone i got shipped with a loose slider and with other clear build quality issues (poor camera housing, light housing etc..). The Nokia instructions booklet indicates this is the N95-1. I advise waiting until at least the N95-4 comes out. This is not even a beta model, its an alpha test.

It is one of the best phones I have ever seen. Reception is great. It has satnav, so, no need to buy tomtom. Can use it as PDA also. I am going to download my medical textbook on it. No probs with the handset. It’s wonderful. Being a doctor, I’ve a busy life, but I swear this phone has made my life much easier. I am simply in love with it.

The N95 is a good phone. But if you take a 5 meg picture you cant send it via picture messaging because the picture size is to large. you have to drop the meg pixels down to 0.3 megs and also the problem is battery life,it has to be re-charged everyday!!. Tried to get a long life battery but not had any luck yet. if you forget to recharge the phone daily it dies on you halfway through the second day. I went back to my k750i.

every thing about this phone is just amazing. although the camera is not as good as i thought it would be, but there is no point in moaning about it because at the end of the day it is only a mobile phone. my advice is that if you do have a faulty n95, then try to get a replacement. my dad has this phone and everything is working perfectly fine. i think that it is a expencive phone but you are getting a lot of features for your money. a lot of the problems that people have been having with this phone are softwear problems, and could be fixed by nokia sorting out a softwear upgrade. also this is realy nokias first attemt at a phone with so many features on it so there is bound to be problems.

well,i hope i dont jinx it by what im going to write but i am very happy and surprised by this nokia model.i changed to it after two different phones i disliked from my upgrade.i was reading all the reviews and was a bit dubious about it given all the problems people have experienced with it,but then i thought, with all the features crammed into it of course it will be a little sluggish and may freeze and it made me decide that i could put up with that as long as it never happened too frequently, cuz at the end of the day as long as between them episodes im getting one of the best phones on the market. So far so very good. I got this phone on thursday just gone(24th may) and the battery has only just started to warn me its low.I turned the 3g off and now its just gsm so that helped battery life loads and like i did with my old pda i just kept closing applications not being used that also helps loads,so,really the battery i think is quite fair considering how bad i thought it would be. now onto the camera,WOW,WOW,WOW loads of ways to customise your pictures and so god damn crystal clear, amazing.call quality very good no funny whistling sound emitting from speaker(mine is a vodafone branded one).slide function smooth and solid with no loose feeling to it with a nice tactile keyboard and been as i have very small fingers it suits me great.ringtones nice and loud so can be heard clearly in bag. No system freezes as yet but i am expecting it to happen soon.WLAN very easy and quick to set up which was then very fast, even my husband was very fast.media palyer is really good too. All in all i love this phone and for once i can see me having this phone for a very long time as its amazing as it does so many things, even if things go wrong i will just replace it for another n95. sSo well done nokia for converting me back,i never thought that would happen. My main advise is,think about what type of person you are,if your an extreme perfectionist that everything has to be 100% perfect then dont get this phone as if you are unfortunate to have a dud one it will drive you mad until you update software and sort the problems out,or if your more easy going and relaxed like me,who can tolerate things a bit better then get this phone as you wont be so bothered about the occasional freeze or average battery life and will have loads of fun when it is running great.

I haven't found any bugs . . . yet! I don't mind charging the phone every night. When I went to get this phone I was getting it for the 5 megapixel camera, that's all. Good points: great camera and features, big screen and good sound. I'd recommend buying this phone in it's 2nd or 3rd incarnation when all of the problems have been ironed out, great ideas and probably the future but it just isn't capable now.

If you want a phone that you can use as a phone, which is not like bone china in your pocket, this is not for you! Had this phone a month now - got a free upgrade For functions this phone is great. Best feature is definately the Wi Fi, meaning you can get hold of large files pretty easily. The screen is brilliant. The sound quality of calls is probably the best I've come across on a mobile... The GPS is wicked, I got lost today and found my way using it. Stroke of genius that was BUT here are the cons: -battery life is abysmal. If you use it for anything other than texting you will be charging it every night. -There are 2 menu buttons - the second LOOKS good but is totally useless. It ALWAYS gets in the way when playing games, and I have now given up with snake now as I am constantly pressing the menu button. -The camera is great, but the lens is always opening in my pocket and starts the camera - The mp3 player software is shockingly bad, its really not geared up as an mp3 player - plus no memory card bundled as in sonys -its SLOOOOOOOOW -programs dont always close when you exit them meaning the phone is constantly slowing down as there is so much running. I will keep this phone, but next year, I am back to Sony again I feel like Nokia have tried too hard with this. A couple of tweaks and this would be an awesome phone.

I've not bought an N95, but i've used one as I work for one of the UK mobile networks. The image quality is NOT better than the Cybershot Sony's, how Nokia can claim 5mp quality I dont know. When you see the images side by side, I have to say I think the Sony slightly edges it, and they are only 3.2mp. As far as reliability goes, I left Nokia after having a 6600 a few years back as it used the symbian operating system and ALWAYS crashed. Its sad to see that the world's 'biggest' mobile brand cant get its act together. Even the people who rate the N95 highly say it crashes, but they put up with it!! Are you mad, take your Nokia tinted glasses off people, you shouldnt have to put up with poor quality and crashing handsets!! Would you buy a car that breaks down every day? No, so why buy a phone that costs the earth and doesnt really do what it says on the tin?

I couldn't wait to get my hands on this phone - I've had it just over a week now, on T mobile, and its been OK. Its crashed twice, when I left virtually everything running on it and was trying to change settings etc as well. As lots of people will attest on here - its vital to close programmes as you've finished with them. Battery life hasn't been an issue just yet and I've used the internet a lot - I'd say speed wise its about equivalent to a 1-2 gig broadband, so not bad. Sat Nav is pretty good. If you need Sat Nav everyday for work - this isn't the system to use. If you need to find your way somewhere on the odd occassion, this IS for you. I've had a play with it finding my way to places I already know just to experiment and its been fine. Its only £3 or £4 for a week and £6 for a month, so I'd be tempted to use it on holday I think, and for the odd confusing trip to Cities I'm really unfamiliar with. You really DO need a decent PC to use this phone fully - and with Broadband too. Otherwise you'll never get to fully update the system as it grows, and Nokia iron out bugs - also the mapping system which is excellent, is easily downloaded through USB, which I find easier, and cheaper I guess. Oh and you'll need a memory card to - get as much as you can afford - at least 1Gb tho. I have to say I think the other thing to consider is your internet usage on this phone - I'm on web and walk with tmobile, so I can just get on with it - I dread to think how much it would cost to run otherwise. Insure it too - I've never bothered before - but at a replacement cost of around £400 you'd be mad not too. It also feels a little fragile, (hence the insurance) and I;ve had the microphone cut out once. I'll be keeping a close eye on it. SO - Excellent - not quite outstanding - as theirs a few bugs here to be fixed. I suspect the next one N95i or whatever it'll be will be the mutts nuts! Phil, Hull.

got mine on orange contract, always had nokia (except for last year when i had a terrible moto razr, sounded like a tin, and a sony ericsson k750i,the joystick broke after 3 months) got my n95 on the 10th april, the pictures are stunning, took it to silent valley in northern ireland and took some awesome pictures, they look perfect on my computer. i have already had a 6600,6630,6680,n70,but they dont compare to this, its fast, the ringtones are very loud (for instance i was upstairs in bed the other night playing around with the phone when i turned the mp3 player on, my husband who was downstairs with the tv on came upstairs as he thought i had the stereo on in the bedroom!) overall very very happy with it and i will keep it til it dies, unfortunatly i have to take it back as it has a fault on it (keeps turning off and telling me to set the phone up,has happened 6 times, and it deletes themes when it happens, also the camera button on the side of the phone became very very loose and felt like it was going to fall off, phoned orange and they are replacing it for me. other than that its a perfect phone and i must have got one of the faulty ones :-( the screen is very bright and clear, the phone feels sturdy,it is light, but still bulky enough to feel it in my pocket. I didnt get a carry case in my box so i bought a clear plastic hard case for £4.99 and i dont even notice it is on,memory wise, i havent had a chance to get a memory card yet, up to now i have 7 themes,3 songs and about 12 pics on it and it seems fine. In a nutshell, the camera is the best i have ever seen on a phone, the ringtones are the loudest i have ever had on a phone, and for me it is worth the 8 months i waited for it :-)

I took the gamble and purchased one of the first batches of this phone, I've had the phone nearly a week but still very, very pleased with it. As with all new phones condition the battery (charge for 16hrs and then let it drain completely and then re-charge for 16hrs and repeat one last time). This is especially important with a feature packed phone that is likely to have a high impact on battery life. The first day of use the battery flattened very quickly (I was using the camera a lot) but since then, with the battery conditioning, it has substantially improved and now last 3 days with moderate use with using some of the features when showing your mates. The phone is a lot smaller and lighter than my previous N91 and works considerably quicker between applications. The camera is great and the music quality through the speakers better than my N91. I was able to transfer all my numbers easily via Bluetooth. The phones feels good and seems to be built very well. The menu systems (this phone has two menus, one for most things and one for media applications) and as you would expect is easy to use and understand, my GF is even buying one later she's that impressed with it and she has major technophobia. If your thinking of making a purchase I would, I've very happy with mine, most operators/networks are already doing some great deals on new contracts and upgrades.
