Reviewed by Abi on 23/06/2009I had two of these phones and both of them died on me and both had to go back unfortunately. This was probably because I'm blind and use a program called talks which speaks the functions etc. I loved the N73 though and was sad when my phone company informed me they would be sending me an N95 because the N73 was being discontinued. somehow I found the shape of the phone quite satisfying and, it is also pretty small which was great for me. I had absolutely no complaints about it until it had to go back and I am determined to get my hands on one again one day. Rating: Reviewed by ALE on 10/06/2009 Within a few months of owning this phone, it started to turn itself off for no reason at all. I then found out, through others who also have the N73, that this is a common problem. After just a year of owning it I am having to replace it. The toggle button has gone bonkers. I can't access contacts and when i try, it rings anyone it fancies. Even the shop i took it to was baffled at it's alter ego. It may look a nice phone, but reading the other reviews there are obviously some fundamental flaws. Rating: Reviewed by Srikanth on 04/06/2009 Initially I had Nokia N73 mobile. It was sooo good. But as I lost that cell, I bought new Nokia 1202 mobile. Until then I am having very good opinion on NOKIA branded mobiles. But the Nokia 1202 mobile is so so so so WORST. It is very delicate and while talking at talking with others, the receivers cannot listen to our words properly. I then thought that I made big mistake by purchasing that mobile. Actually Nokia's precious models like: 1100, 1110 etc (which are base models) used to be VERY GOOD. But they stopped those good mobiles and launched new models like: 1200, 1202, 1209 etc, which are VERY WORST. I don't know why they made such a big mistake like this. It has got excellent features like 3.2mp camera, video player, music player etc. The phone design is very good as it has got a joystick, a vey large screen and plus it looks neat and simple. Some people may find this phone very big but you will get used to it. So overall this is a magnificent phone which everyone should have. Mine lasted less than a week before I went back to my old and faithful Nokia N80 - maybe a little old fashioned now, but still as reliable and as easy to use as the day I bought it.If ti ain't broke - don't fix it. I was made to have this N73 by 3 who said I was due for an upgrade. When I told them I was quite happy with my N80 they still insisted I had to have a new one. The most stupid phone I've ever seen.... Just after 2 days of buying this phone.. the complaints started... the phone would crash occasionally and gets stuck.. during taking a photograph the screen turns up a number of time with which we lose some precious moments of sudden photography.. Sometimes after the clicking the camera button.. no sound comes...I get fed up and put the phone in the pocket after closing it's shutter.. After sometimes, a sound comes from my pocket of a click.. the photograph is taken.. watz the use of camera to take dark images in pockets.. Another major problem is the calling option.. when calling some body the phone just blinks but doesn't call... I have to restart my phone a dozen times a day to make calls... You get angry when we have to restart phone to call in an emergence... You already know that this phone takes too much time to load up... Sometimes the volume button doesn't work.. this is also corrected by restarting a number of time... The only thing I appreciate about this phone is the sound quality and loudness. Just after one month of usage of this phone.. I sent a written list of 12 major complaints to the company I bought it from.. they reinstalled the software and it worked for one week.. then rest all same.. I even updated the phone last month.. nothing could help... If I had the money.. I would have thrown this mobile and bought Sony Ericsson... And one more truth.. When I bought this mobile, 99% of my college mates had this phone... Just after 4 months.. I rarely could find anyone own this mobile.. Now I and only a guy whose uncle gave this mobile for no money... A symbian phone with such a high battery life is quite compromising. And with an excellent 3.2 mega pixel carl zeiss lens and outstanding sound quality it stands atop in the budget luxury list. The cuddling thing about this phone is its load time or actually the load time. But we can't expect more from a phone with this much features in such a price range to be working harder. And try loving your phones so shall it work properly. The camera reverts back to the menu half way through taking pictures, it crashes at least once a day, it blocks out going calls, dust somehow gets in behind the screen. Myself and three friends have all had this problem. Uploading track is a nightmare, so slow and all trakcs if in I-Tunes have to be re-formatted. Bluetooth hardly gets picked up. Steer clear if you can. I have returned it to the shop of seven!!! ocassions . As a last resort i brought it to a nokia repair shop and they tried unsuccessfuly to fix it. Vodafone refused to replace the phone. They seem to have their own version of the consumers rights laws. Rating: Reviewed by Rob on 26/03/2009 I am on my 2nd N73, after i lost my last one, and I have seen the same flaws in both of them. Even though the one i have at the moment is the new improved model and my last one was the older version. The N73 seems to have a tendency to turn itself off, this has also been mentioned by friends who have to same phone. My N73 also sometimes over heats, It will sometimes get really hot and the battery will just drain, im not sure whether other people have encountered this problem but it seems to be occurring more often, the older the phone is getting. The phone also tends to freeze quite often. I love the phone but its not performing anywhere near as good as when I got it. The camera (although very good and high spec) freezes and you often miss the shot while you are trying to get it to switch on. I has a very annoying flashing blue light that I think is the blue tooth - sometimes it flashes so much it is like it is trying to land a plane as it lights up the room. Very annoying if you are trying to sleep. I can't wait for my contract to end so I can ditch this phone - it has put me off Nokia it really has. If you do get this phone get insurance you will need it. It constantly flashes onto the camera, always switches itself off and the battery lasts just over a day due to the constant flashing of the camera! It's got a mind of it's own. It has been sent off for repair!! I think the content of the phone looks very appealing but don't think the phone can cope with all the content it offers, it is so slow as well!! Dreadfull! Rating: Reviewed by Stan on 08/02/2009 Although the phone came out a while, i recently got it and all i can say is, compared to my old sony ericsson k530i it is a vast improvement. You can download new themes and with the nokia pc suite you can pretty much load anything onto this phone. although it takes a while to send messages i searched the internet and updated the phone and it now sends texts in an instant. as for the camera, it is a brilliant quality with 3.2mp and the carl ziess lens it is an outstanding camera. the only complaint i have is the build materials as they feel a tad cheap and a bit flimsy but other than that no complaints what so ever. overall brilliant phone with outstanding features. Yes the camera is great, but apart from that,there's not much positive to say! The memory is quite small,the keys break, and, which really annoys me, the phone seems to think it knows everything... I baught this £200 and it has been slow and the joystick fell out so i had to sell it for only £50 :( the keys felt weird. couldn't get a background to fit on the screen entirely, wayyyyy to loud plus point being the camera was decent. It still doesn't work but t-mobile refuse to replace it. It crashes, freezes and the reason I had to get it sent away is that my buttons stopped working. The joystick broke and now when I phone people is it extremely crackly (nothing to do with my signal). I usually go with samsung as they are smart and easy to use but decided to have a change. NEVER again. Sorry Nokia but you have decided to put to much onto a phone to quickly. Slowest and most frustrating phone I have owned. I have used k800i n70 etc..but it is far better than any: many say it freezes but i think it do so when u open many programs or press keys quickly.. Rating: Reviewed by vicky on 31/12/2008 i've had this phone for a few months and im on my second. the first kept freeezing and the camera wouldnt take a pic! this ones about as bad it vibrates when theres no message and when there is a message it doesnt vibrate. ive lost count of the number of people who cant tell what im saying on the phone, i sound like im under water. predictive text is shocking now is onx and they is thex?!?! also whats with the little blue light that flashes when the phone 'goes to sleep' it stops me going to sleep if i leave it near my bed its so bright! does have a few good points camera ok if you can get it to work and songs sound good always liked nokias and thought they were reliable but not this one am trading in for a samsung g600. Apart from being frustratingly slow, switching itself off for no reason, the words 'enhancement not supported' repeatedly flashing up on the screen and callers not being able to hear me during incoming calls, the phone is also very illogical. I have found that many of the features are not where you would expect them to be in the menu. Also, other features of the phone have been very poorly thought out! For example, it takes longer to 'mark' a message than it does to 'delete' it, which renders marking many messages and then 'deleting all marked' completely pointless! Befor N73ME i had Sony Ericsson W700. The camera SE W700 Camera is far better then the N73 Camera the image quality of N73 is Very Bad and the phone is slow compared to SE W700. AND EACH TIME the whimsical plastic clip that holds in the memory card breaks. It is a tiny plastic clip and when it goes that is it. The operating system on the phone keeps telling me "It is un safe to remove the memory card" and that drains the battery. Camera is good but not as good as sony ericson. But their are a few problems. Phone switches off even under very light shock some times even without shock. Its terrible, The phone drops calls, freezes, gets lost between loud speaker-hands free and normal phone mode. Blue tooth connects and disconects as it likes. Its slow start up drives me mad, battery life is naff after several months even with regular charge-discharge. The paddle falls in bits and works when it wants. On a good note, for a 5mp camera it's awsome!! Music player is good and the removable sd card is a handy thing. Nokia's pc suite works well for connecting to your laptop but then the bluetooth screws it all up an you'll want to throw the phone out of the window again. They wouldn't register properly, make calls etc, the third phone then took longer and longer to send text messages - the last time i used it, it was 9 minutes - Yes 9 WHOLE MINUTES to send one text! After those problems were resolved through downloading new software the screen started to bleed, so it was no longer usable unless i bought a new screen. I just bought a new phone instead! Nightmare! Having a good camera and sound, I found phone is slow and also calles get disconnected while talking and phone freezes(Hangs) for some time. I am on my 7th handset so far as it lasts about 3 months before it justs gets too much for me what with the keys not working, turning itself off, jumping around between menus etc etc. I can't exchange yet but I have good insurance so I just get given a new one every time. I am actually staggered by how bad this phone is. Yes I use it a lot but should that mean it has a life of 3 - 4 months before it nearly makes me weep with frustration?!! It freezes when sending text messages and takes about 5 minutes to send them! The camera would be good, if it didn't crash. I'd like the easy access gallery button on the side of the phone too if it didn't take forever to load before crashing. After a few months of playing games all the memory had been used up and I was forced to delete all of my downloaded games and applications in order to free up memory and allow me to receive texts and phone calls! I'd like being able to make phone calls on it too, if the phone didn't crash minutes into the calls. My advice, don't buy this phone! From sliding the back cover to ready is painstaking!!! Then the 3.2mp does not give very good photos ( why many reviews indicate good quality.(only macro close shots produce acceptable snaps). I dont really think so.. its not serious photography Basically for casual snap here and there is fine. if you want decent photos, stick to decent digital cameras. One other annoying thing.. when you take the back cover off enough times, say for changing sim cards, etc etc, the gold contact strips tend to wear ( due to 2 pins exerting pressure), and camera slider becomes unreliable. ie sometimes the camera does not turn on. with the latest firmware. Nokia seems to think that the moment you switch on the phone, you want to play music, by automatically load the music player, taking up preciously memory, and slowing the already slow phone. Rating: Reviewed by leiah on 29/09/2008 been using my n73 for 5 months now. 1st few months were great but after saving some pix and songs. after i've downloaded some games though, it became slower in terms of texting and accessing the menu. i've installed the sms accelerator and it somehow corrected the slow texting problem. but now, my phone sometimes have a dark screen when left unattended and you cant access any menu, so you have to turn it off by pressing the power button several times. but when you turn it on, youll have to press it several times again (like more than 10x) to boot it. i don't know what's wrong with it..... i love its crisp pix though. I purchased these phones due to the 3.2 megapixels camera and the amount of memory. I have always mainly used my mobile phones to take pictures and texting people. I also like to store a lot of messages and pictures I've received. The first phone said I had used 22 megabites and I had 20 remaining. My current phone states I have used 13 MB and have 31 MB remaining but they won't let me send or receive messages. The only way I can receive pictures or messages with the second phone is to delete messages to receive new ones. The first phone won't let me delete anything or transfer data to my PC Suite as it states 'not enough memory to perform'!!! I purchased it because i use Skype and email so I after discussing my requirements with 3 they said that this was the phone for me. When either I make a call or receive a call the caller at the other end keeps getting their voice echoing back to them. The only way to overcome this is to keep turning the phone off and resetting it, which points to a memory issue. So far they have had it back for repair and replaced the handset 3 times and finally stated that I would need to purchase the N95 8gb to overcome the problem. To add insult to injury I was told the bluetooth would be compatable with my Audi but unfortunately it was not so I ended up in purchasing another phone i.e. Sony Ericsson K610 to use in the car. I bought my first from Virgin for £135 refurbished. It lasted about 7 months. Virgin wouldn't at first replace it but after much discussion decided they would give me another N73 refurbished phone. That one last about 2 months. It constantly crashed, turning itself off, camera wouldn't work, this is such a frustrating phone, i'm thinking of leaving nokia all together. I thought it would be too good to be true as it does look and feel like an excellent phone. As time went on the phone got slower and slower and would freeze. The camera is excellent and had no problems with it as long as you remembered which side button to press and didnt hit the other one next to it. The quality was very good and the screen was excellent. I did however hate the fact that I was unable to turn off the start up tone. I know when I have turned the phone one I dont need it to tell me. I have now had to revert to my old faithfull 6230i until November when my contract comes up. The first day i got it i got stressed because i didnt understand how to work it and i hate going through the book trying to work it all out, but at the end of they day i new how to work it with no help! The blue flashing light at the top when you havent been using the phone can get annoying so i just turn it over. I love the big screen and the buttons are easy to handle(even though there small!). One thing though, i wish the camera was a bigger mega pixel and wish it was better quality, but i do like the slide effect on the back of the phone to open the camera. Aging now but as the banner says the firmware updates have addressed many of the early issues. Camera is excellent. Only downside is that Bluetooth no longer works with Apple Macs running OS X 10.5 (Leopard). Shame because it worked beautifully till the last firmware update which was very convenient for cable-less syncing and photo transmission. Rating: Reviewed by pierreE on 14/07/2008 after 1,5 year with the N70 i switched over to the SE K770I with also a 3,2 Mpx camera. but i mised the symbian O.S. and purchased the N73. now my K770I stay's in the box and i am i happy N73 user. the pictures by daylight are awesome, the music from the MP3 player is good with the phone"s speaker. a little bit sharp maybe but i adjusted the equalizer pumping up some bass. some people complaine abouth things wich are normal for a symbian smartphone. the menu is slow, sending an sms can be a little slow but this is normal. i got the 4....firmware and my phone never hung or no freezing occured. but when i make or receive calls i allways make sure that i am not multitasking. i am verry happy with this phone. wanted to buy the apple Iphone 3G but will keep my n73. not charging the battery every day like the iphone 3G but every three days and two nights. The camera was very good but most people seem to want to compare these with proper cameras which they should do. I bought it for my car as it has this larger display that realy makes the difference. And it works just fine as a GPS device, though you have to buy an additional gadget! It's true that it is kind of slow compared to other Nokias on the market. So, if you are looking for speed try another model! You have to install some extra soft in order to get the most of it! And that's the beauty of having a Symbian on board! It's upgradable - sky's the limit! You'll definitely need a full screen caller, a task manager, an unlimitted voice recorder and an extra divx player! The camera is simply outstanding - Carl Zeiss rocks! Out in the open - you can stuck your card up to the full, no worries about the battery stamina! I advise you to use only 1GB cards - cos they work just fine once you format them in the phone! Don't be stressed out about the capacity - it's foolishness! And watch out for the joystick - don't exploit to the max - it looks fragile to me - but it does the job! Great themes! Great sound - I expected better! But the video part it's simply dissapointing! I use my old Nokia 6233 which - by the way - rules when it comes to video recording! The music edition requires us to send an sms to 55555 to get the validation keys for the 100 odd songs preloaded. This facility has not worked even after repeated calls to the Customer call center. First they say- MTNL doesnt work get AIRTEL or VODAPHONE SIM card to work.. its been two days since i have got one VODAPHONE sim just for the sake of getting the activation keys. NOt received the activation keys till date. If you have so many limitations to provide the facility dont understand why provide it in the first instance? My partner would be happy to inherit it as an replacement for his lost phone! What a superb phone. Really! Must be the best I've ever used. Easy to use interface (maybe that is because I've been with nokia since 1996), quality build, reliable, sturdy.... you get the idea. I only had a problem with it once, and that was my own fault. did not know that Nokia phones can't drink beer. But once it recovered from its hangover, it was back to normal. I love the size of the screen, the layout of the keys, and all the functions. Good application list, firmware updates makes it great as well, recently upgraded mine to the music edition with no problem. Had it unlocked...use the internet, used it as a modem for nearly two months on my pc where it worked constantly for two months, connected to the power supply! Only crashed once or twice (whre my partners LG Viewty crashed more than the Johannesburg Stock Exchange!) I will recommend the phone still, although it has been available for a few years! Go Nokia! Some problems when i slide camera cover down it normally should go straight to camera but nothing happens but when it does go it goes straight back to normal screen. And the colour from the keys are coming off. by the way, the phone was not like this before i got the cover, so the phone is good. But dont put a cover on it whatever you do. I think I'll get rid of my phone. I had to buy an voice recorder software because the one that's inside only records up to a minute compared the S40 phones. I absolutely love this phone and all features in it. 2 Weeks ago the phone started to shut off by itself whenever I put it in my pocket ONLY and when I turn it on again, enter my password thing..finishes loading.. it goes back to locked keys which is what I had it set up to when I put it in my pocket so I'm not sure if its sleeping or whatever but nothing else works except turning it on again. Also, it has no actual alarm program (except for calendar) and calculator is not a good one at all and seriously, 1 min voice recording??? What is that Nokia?? I did load it with tons of stuff (programs and about 24 games) so it might be the reason why it slows down a bit now. I got this while I was in the middle east so I'm not sure about sending it for a repair/replacement here in Canada. I don't think they have ones with arabic letters and all that on the keypad. Nokia have tried to jump too many steps too quickly with this phone cramming so much in they forgot what its for -making phone calls - basically it drops the signal very very easily - comes up with connection error often when trying to make calls constantly and drops calls in places I never had trouble with before with o2. Mine is with O2 - major bug bear is the web browsing is soo easy to activate whilst you are moving around i have no idea how much money I have wasted with this - the key lock works when you remember to put it on tried to find an auto key lock function - its not there To top things off its not very robust ( fine if you can walk around with it in a silken purse) but the camera button has stopped working for taking stills but will still work for video clips - go figure. Basically I will be shifting backwards in technology next time to get the features I want Counting down the months to try and get an upgrade / changed phone. My advice - hunt around a bit more and see what else is out there. When I first had it, the phone froze a few times but I took it in for repair and since then it's worked really well. It started by taking about 30 seconds to send a text message, now it takes3 minutes depending on the length of the text. Also, the phone has stopped alerting me to new messages in any way - I have to actively search for any new messages - highly irritating. It switches itself off randomly during calls, it sometimes prevents me from making outgoing calls, it takes an age to boot up. The camera is great, but frankly if I'd wanted to buy a digital camera I would have. There's also an issue with deleted pictures leavng a remanant of the file on the phone which cannot be cleared off and still takes up memory. Also, it's lacking in simple features that would make it user friendly - such as not allowing you to set a recurring alarm, which I would consider standard. It's a complete pain having to set my alarm every single night. All in all, I think Nokia have become a little too obsessed about enhancing the music and photographic devices in their N series, and have completely forgotten they are supposed to be supplying mobile phones. I'll stick with my Ipod and digital camera, please - just let me make calls and send text messages! What a load of rubbish! I have had the N73 for 11 months now and it is by far the worst piece of electronic gagetry I have ever bought. I am now on my third one, and it has been back to Vodaphone and Nokia 5 times in total. The list of complaints are:- freezing, turning itself off, crashing, keylock unlocking (can't remember the ammount of times I've made calls to friends without knowing - a particular sorry to Aaron!), slow slow slow functions, non connection to Nokia PC Suite (great camera, but when you can't upload the pictures of your 6 month old and, phone has to go back, and the shop says to download as the memory will be wiped whilst repairs...). I had wanted to get back to Nokia for a while after having brief affairs with Samsung, Motorola and Sony E, and feeling that Nokia had better menus etc., and liked the looks of the N73. Unfortunately the menus are confusing, the operation slow and cumbersome, and in general worse that Sony E and Samsung (but on par with Motorola). It's only saving grace is it's camera, but I suggest if you want a camera only, buy a camera, If you want a phone with a camera, avoid avoid AVOID the N73. I am looking forward to a new contract next month when I can get back to a phone that works! Bad Job Nokia! Also it takes the phone 1 mins 51 secs 2 send a txt message and in this time the phone is frozen. The phone is also slow in general. Worst phone i have ever owned and am going to sell it and get something else that is not a nokia N series as the are all so slow and tempremental. Also when i have an incoming call the phone ometimes decides to turn its self off when they ring which is more than frustrating and i think it will end up out a window if i keep it any longer. I had to re-type in 180 contacts and when they text you, it doesnt recognise it and just puts the number which the text is from and not the name ! Ive always had samsungs up until now, and have now been given the choice of swapping models, as i dont want yet another N73 !! Only plus side is that the N73 takes great pictures. It would frequently "freeze" and the only way to restart was to take the battery out. It gave up completely after 10 months of modest use. The quality of the photos and video is brilliant given 3.2mp Zeiss lens. The music player is ok but rather annoying as the random play setup plays the same playlist over and over - even if you shut it down and start it again, it goes back to the start and plays over! The volume and sound could be better even through headphones that are normally provided. Internet is good, screen is big for smartphone. Biggest drawback is the size of the keys - very small and difficult to use when you are texting/dialing. Only 3 stars as it is slow to start amd shut down. It has crashed a couple of times also! Everything worked ok and I was generally pleased with it...UNTIL the joystick decided to stick, my messages wouldn't send on the occasions the phone actually let me write my txt. I would say the only two good things about this phone are it's camera (got some good pics with it) and the fact that everytime I've thrown it at a wall in frustration it hasn't broke in half. It's a truly terrible phone. It's slow, it's ugly, it crashes a lot, and (whoever it was who said this in a previous post, bravo, thank god I'm not alone) it constantly says I have a message when I don't. The menu system is counter-intuitive (related functions are scattered across multiple menus) and I can't for the life of me work out how to turn off that irritating roller coaster graphic that pops up after you've turned the phone on. AAAAGHHH! Granted, the camera is good, but if it's all about the camera, then I have a few problems with that too: it's very slow, and the flash is way too bright, with no option of adjusting it. I am honestly amazed at some of the good reviews on this site. If I was being cynical I'd say they were written by people in the Nokia PR department... However if you have too many Apllication running at the same time it can cause it to Crash or restart, free up some phone memory to speed it up, then it runs smooth. Check how much memory is free. Try and save photo's/music/downloaded apps to a memory card if possible. There isn't that much onboard memory and memory cards (mini SD are very cheap these days 2. Upgrade to the latest firmware. This will cure many problems. 3. Go into internet, download, and download the text fix. Now with these options in place lets see how many of the problems still exist: 1. It takes 5 minutes to send a text - it doesn't. It takes less than a minute to send it to a group of 40 people, and about 2 seconds to send it! 2. It freezes - Very rare and certainly no more than anything else I've had. It once turned off when receiving a text but thats once in 4 months. 3. Battery life is poor - mine averages between 3 and 7 days depending on how much I use it. 4. The features are rubbish - errm no they aren't. I don't think this phone lacks any feature apart from wifi and you don't get that on anything expect really high end stuff. Music player even supports WMA and camera is 3.2 megapixel. And if you don't like supplied apps, can download hundreds more as its sybian. It is quite think and a bit boring looking. That does make me want to upgrade to something a bit sleeker but in order to do that I currently have to make at least one sacrifice, and as such I'm keeping my brick! Its not that massive, quite small for a smart phone infact. It has not crashed ever (touch wood) or had any failures at all. I have TomTom sat nav installed and it works really well through bluetooth to my receiver. The themes are good, but only some of the ones I have down-loaded work with it. Games are easily down-loadable too. The down-side for me is the keys. The numbers are a bit fiddly, and you keep catching your thumb on the keys that lie round the numbers, meaning you send texts accidentally before you finish typing them, or access the music player by accident. Not good! Next time I'd buy an N95 or something like that with a dedicated number pad, with the other keys separate. But it's better than some other people say (again, touch wood)! I’ve been with ORANEG since around ’93 and have always had and been very happy with Nokia phones. That was till I got the N73. I’m on my third phone (took delivery today) because the microphone consistently fails every four to six months. You can this repaired for free under warranty when people start complaining that you are breaking up. If you want to make 3G calls make sure your conversations don’t last more than one minute or you run the risk of being cut-off. With the previous two phone I had an issue where if the phone reboots it removes the alarm. I find the display hard to read without glasses. Basically if you want a “phone” that looks good and they tell me that the MP3 and camera functionality are phenomenal then buy this. But if you want to use it to make and receive calls then don’t because you will need to get it repaired every six months or so. I had a SE W810i before this phone and there isn't much difference in start up times between these two phones. The camera takes superb photos, even in the dark, with the flash. Screen is excellet, very clear. Music plays very loud on loudspeaker, much louder than my old W810i, and surpasses the w810i's sound quality by far when the headphones are used to listen to music. I have average size hands and the keypad is not too small. Menu's, i find, aren't slow to view. Applications that can be downloaded onto the phone, such as DivX player and AVI players play videos with perfect quality, as does the Pre-Installed RealPlayer. I have a 1Gb SanDisk Mini SD card in my phone and it works fine, didnt even have to format it. At £99.99 instore and online at T-Mobile it's a bargain, as it is £250 in vodafone and over £200 in 3. Couldn't have asked for a better phone, and would have happily paid £250 if it wasn't £99 at T-Mobile. A 5 rating well earned, best phone i've ever owned. The select button is too small and your fingers slip when trying to use it. The keypad is too small and close together, making texting a nightmare. Rating: Reviewed by George wake on 23/12/2007 i have braught this phone brand new on orange. first of all dont listen to all them people saying its slow and the navagation stick is rubbish. after all it is a computer phone, and it shouldnt be treated as a cheap phone. the phone is very very good. the camera is excellent, for music wise its better then a walkman. i had the sony erricson w850i before the n73 and the n73 is like 3times louder. the internet its great and fast. the phone takes around 5 seconds to start up when turned off. the only bad thing about the phone is the charger. the first night i had it, the charger snapped inside the phone, so i had to get a pin and scoop it out. there just to fin. overall i think the phone is outstanding and i recomend it to everyone who likes to take photos or videos, people who like to go on the internet alot, and people who like to listen to there music. The £100 phone (pay as you go) from t-mobile, was already loaded with the latest firmware and i have had no problems atall with freezing. It is slightly slow, a few seconds to open the camera and a slight lag to get into the messaging menue but it is nothing that annoys me (and that kind of thing usually does!)everything else is nice and speedy. The phone feels nice with a good weight, the keys are slightly close together but you get used to it after a while. The screen is very nice, large and clear to read with a self adjusting backlight which means when you go out into the sun it will make the screen brighter to make it easily viewable. Overall i am very pleased with the phone and would not change it for anything! Rating: Reviewed by Ste on 16/12/2007 This should be a quality phone but it just keeps going wrong, the first one i had decided to stop letting me make outgoing calls after about 3 weeks so it got sent back, a new one arrived about a month ago and now the same thing has happened to that one so its going back again. Add to that the numerous 'connection errors' i get despite having full signal and the fact that it keeps freezing up for no reason and im afraid i wouldnt recommend this to anyone. Having spoke to my brother about this iv found he too has the same phone and had similar problems, basically give it a miss!! Only i can advise the people is complaining about calls like they says is freezing while in the middle to talked or calls, First open the menu then select "Tools" then select "settings" then select "network" and select "dual mode" i had that the same problem before, coz i change my network setting to "dual mode" and now is not freezing o cut off anymore while im talking talking in the phone. And about can't make calls outgoing just call your customers care service and they sorted out for you. And don't put alot icons in your phome screen because is that cozing problem your phone! But I’ve had a number of issues with my N73 as follows: 1) 3G is unusable because calls are dropped every few minutes 2) Quite often people complain that they can’t hear me and I can’t hear people clearly even with the earpiece volume at maximum setting. Thus this phone fails in the primary task I intended to use it for. This is a fault/bad design of the phone rather than a network issue 3) If you set an alarm and restart the phone or if the phone reboots then the alarm is removed. Hence, I don’t rely on the alarm for important events. Also, the snooze timer is five rather than the standard 9 minutes 4) I have difficulty reading the screen as the font is too small I’ve always had Nokia phones and for the very first time I’ll be looking at non-Nokia phones as well for my next purchase. So far it has not crashed or switched its self off at all. I use my phone a lot and i only have to charge it about every 4 to 5 days. All in all a very good phone. Rating: Reviewed by Paul on 21/11/2007 Sorry to see many of you are having reliability problems or are disatisfired. My advice - Firstly uprgade firmware. There is a site showing how to upgrade to music edition version by changing product code which I've done. I've upgraded mine to latest version and it runs like a swiss watch. It has yet to crash in 2 months of owning it! Before upgrade to music version it had latest normal version and that was also reliable. Secondly do not install too many applications to phone memory. If possible when installing anything new select install to memory card. Symbian needs free memory to operate. If you fill this up the phone will freeze and display out of memory errors. Get a decent size card too (1GB minimum) and you'll have loads of room to store Mp3's and pictures. There are several customs modes to get better pictures in low light. Select night mode if its particularly dark or change ISO to high and it will do OK in poor light. Better than everything I've used except K800i I've used which had proper flash. N73 is just bright LED one. Finally mine is unlocked so perhaps reliabity is partly due to lack of extra apps added by mobile networks to the firmware. Think of this phone as a computer, if you overload you PC's it will become. The phone can run unlimited number of applications at once so if its slow hold down menu key for 3 seconds and close some down. The camera is quite slow regardless th ough. Rating: Reviewed by Paul on 21/11/2007 You shouldn't need to upgrade the firmware of a phone, it should be right from day 1, but in this case its well worth it as the latest version fixes all the problems you mentioned. In fact mine has not crashed or even frozen in 2 months! Oh and texts send in about 3 seconds. Also get a decent size memory card and install apps/photo's/music to it rather than the phone. Like a computer if its starved of memory it will become slower and less reliable. Nokia doesn't seem to have protected enough of memory for operating system so you can end up having too much data on phone, and not enough free for background operating system to run well. Do the above and you should hopefully have a reliable phone. This is easily best phone I've owned and most reliable too. The fact it has good camera, Mp3 and runs for 4 days without needing charging is outstanding. Battery life is best phone I've had with a colour screen. However, i then had the idea to delete all the preinstalled games like the skiing game nd the golf game etc and since then ive had no problems whatsoever. So if your on vodaphone and experiencing problems- try that. The features on the phone are excellent, especially the camera quality with its flash. Only think I would wish for would be slightly better sound quality from speakers (lack bass), a flash for the camera, and a bit more style. Think of this as an Iphone without the WOW factor. It can pretty much do everything the Iphone can but doesn't look as stylish, or scream I want one. However this phone has good long term appeal as its capable of so much and what it can't do can be remedied by downloading new software for it. Its a symbian phone and thousands of applications can be added to it. And when I tried to browse internet on it, I actually found it easier than on Itouch which is effectively an Iphone. The gadget show tested an n95 and found it better than iphone. The n73 is basically a cut down n95 without wifi (if you have unlimited gprs tariff that won't matter)and a few other features. The camera doesn't always come up straight away, you sometimes have to turn the phone off and back on again to reset it. But it always makes and receives calls and texts, which is exactly what a phone is meant to do. I can't give it 5 stars cos it keeps crashing and the camera issue, but i can give it 4 stars cos it does what a phone should do. How can a phone that looks so good on paper be so appalling to use. Fully agree with you guys taking stars off the rating. Its a phone... at the bare minimum it should be able to make, and receive calls and send text messages. It barely copes in honesty. Too complex for its own good. Texts can take minutes to send... in the mean time the phone locks up, wont receive calls... often decides to switch itself off. Great camera... but locks up if you take several pics in quick succession. Its one never ending niggle unfortunately. Good for the pocket though... my phone use halfed after getting the n73. Useless as a personal phone, useless as a business tool too. I took the sim out and stuck it in an old 6230i work phone in the end. 3 years older, battered, shabby but streets ahead. If it managed the basics well, I would forgive it... but it doesn't. About as much use as a chocolate teapot. Nokia were always good at producing functional simple handsets... this is neither. But myself as well as anyone else I know who has had this phone is now very cheesed off with it. The phone is incredibly slow, takes about 10 seconds to view a text message, which doesn't sound long but staring at the screen waiting for that long really takes the michael. The phone slowly deteriated over time and is now terrible. Avoid at all costs unless you only plan on using it for a few months! If your like me... on a year contract with it then I'd give it a miss. You'll lose all the extra software and locks the phone companies put on there to mess it up, and it'll work on any network. I needed to do this as mine was locked to orange and I went over to T mobile. Not only did the unlocking company unlock the phone but they cleaned the dust of inside of screen and straightened it. When I got it worked brilliantly. Mine works brilliantly and has yet to crash. Admittably it does get slow when running 10 applications at once (you can't do that on anything thats not a smart phone!), think mini computer and you get the idea, remember to close some down and its fine. Camera is good in daylight, less so in poor lighting conditions but still good for a phone. Music quality is good thanks to stereo speakers, a decent music player that supports Mp3 and WMA, and an FM radio. Reception is good, battery life is excellent, usually only needs charging up once a week! Some say battery life is poor. Its not. Its far better than K800i I had before. I took it away for a camping weekend, listened to music, used the camera, used the internet in a terrible reception area called the lakes and there was still a few bars left on it when I got back. Best thing is you can download extra symbian software which really improves the usability. Opera web browser is particularly good. A bit plasticky, the keypads a bit small, and joypads a bit unresponsive but overall I really like it, its a great does everything device, but try before you buy as it won't appeal to all. Because I've been a Sony Ericsson user for about a year, it took me a few hours to adjust to texting with the Nokia, but I was a Nokia user before so it didn't take that much adjusting. Installing the Nokia PC software isn't so amazingly user-friendly, although it does work compared to the Sony Ericsson software which I hated. If you have BlueSoleil bluetooth software installed it'll keep popping up every 5 seconds when you install the Nokia PC suite. Because the menu button is not in the place where it'd normally be, it's the thin blue button on the right hand side I found myself pressing on the messaging button thinking it was the menu. The pencil button I'm still trying to figure out what it does as it doesn't seem to do anything. I think the gap between the buttons and the screen is a good idea... as I have large fingers the gap stops me getting fingerprints on the screen. The memory card (I bought a 2Gb card) fits just above the pop port. I only had just cut my nails before I opened up the card slot and I found it quite easy to open. I was going to get the K800i but I've heard that the joystick can fail and more annoyingly the camera cover slides open too easily. The joystick on the N73 is perfectly designed as it's really responsive and easy to press down as you don't have to press down too far. I have unlimited use of MSN and Skype on my plan so if you're at work or school you can use MSN messenger. Quite easy to use as it acts in the same way as a text message. So I'm giving this phone 5 stars as it's an amazing phone.Nokia users will find themselves at home, and Sony Ericsson users will need a little time to adjust to the phone. I've always had Nokias in the past. This phone was a dream at first - I bought it at Easter this year - the joystick is great to operate and I love all the features, especially the camera. I also bought a large memory card for it, cos I love taking pictures, even though I regularly load them off onto my PC. I recieved some updates from Vodafone, and since then the phone is a nightmare. I send a lot of texts....it can take up to 30 seconds and more before the phone unfreezes whilst its sending - by which time the person has often recieved the text and replied too! I cannot do anything at all while the text is sending as the screen just freezes. The camera is a little slow to lad up, but it's not too bad. The thing that really annoys me more than anything though, is, no matter what profile I have the phone on - I have set my o wn, and they did work before the updates - the tune that plays when the phone rings often reverts back (no matter how many times I reset it, and it always shows the desired tune is set) to that absolutely awful Nokia tune!!! I hate it with a passion, and I would NEVER have my phone ring to that sound, in fact when I hear it I often miss calls cos I dont realise its MY phone! I have asked about taking the updates off, but they want my phone for days, and will wipe everything off. I can't do without my phone for days - I need it for work. All I can say is DON'T DOWNLOAD THE UPDATES then your phone will work fine....that's if it was already!!! (still prefer it to the K800i though!) If you're in an emergency and your phone is off, don't bother turning it on... you might not make it before it boots up. During the year that I have had it, it has dropped calls about 10 times - it just turns off at the most inconvenient time. The UI is very slow, if you receive a message, you have to wait an age while it redraws the screen to open and read the message. If your phone in standby and you just want to see the clock, press a key, wait, wait, wait, wait, screen refreshes to show clock - takes about 2 secs. It switches itself off sometimes as regularly as every 5 MINUTES! I have sent it in for repairs twice and they said there was nothing wrong with it apart from the software needed updating. These software updates stopped the random sleep patterns for all of a day, then it was back to it's usual antics. Plus you can only update it at home if you have a PC (no mac users) Granted the camera is good, and you can use it as a substitute iPod if you buy the memory chip (fyi- £40 in the shops, £9 on ebay) but it's not been loyal to me. Symbian is an OS just like windows and if you minimise all these apps. instead of closing them it will slow up,crash and freeze, you need to exit applications and not just press the cancel or red keys this will stop 90% of the problems people are having. When it came to getting my new contract I jumped at the chance to get this phone. I couldn't have been more disappointed. When sending a text message the phone locks up for 1-2 minutes. If your sending multiple message or picture messages, you're looking at more like 5 minutes. The joystick is inferior to any Sony Ericsson joystick, I look after my phones, never dropped it once, and the joystick cover has fallen off. I'm now left using the metal thing that was underneath this. Rubbish! The camera is an awesome camera to be fair, mine personally runs at a normal pace, although the gallery can be slow to load even when pretty much empty. I know a colleague of mine with this phone can't even use their camera as it's too slow and often crashes. My advice, steer clear! I loved Nokia's, this one has put me off for life! Rating: Reviewed by B Wilson on 11/10/2007 Ok ive had this phone for about a month and have seen various critical articles about it on various websites I visited. I will address some of these points that ive noticed Number 1: the keys, these are for a fact to small ... although im not a woman and they will probably do better with smaller fingers for any man texting at speed, you make a lot of mistakes with this phone, i suggest you try one out and see for yourself .. you'll notice in about 2 minutes if this is a crucial factor for you. Number 2: crashes slowdown etc, my nokia has crashed i.e. gone completely dark and restarted twice in a month, what is more common is a system slowdown due to lack of resources i presume .. at least twice a day when you go for a menu itmes, mp3 player, applications the phone will take between 2-5 seconds to open the menu ... this is harder to prove in the shop, but if you could borrow the phone for about 2 hrs or more and played about with it a lot, opening applications you would notice it, still if this isn't an issue don't worry about it. Number 3: the camera, a lot of comments mention how slow the camera is taking 2 seconds or so to come on .. well i have a casio exilim camera and that takes about 0.5 to 1 second to come on, but i still wouldn't be able to get it up in time to catch a flypast of a tornado bomber, so i fail to see why people keep mentioning they can't catch all these spur of the moment shots ... in all likelhood, if you had a camera that opened instantly you still wouldnt catch the shot you were after, this phone opens up in between 2 and 2.5 seconds approx, but i don't really find this to be an issue, what is an issue which is mentioned is low light photography, especially at a distance, its quite poor, but the camera will generally take very acceptable standard print sized pics in bright sunlight. number 4: the joystick falling off, well mine hasn't and currently shows no sign of it .. but who knows so far so good .... Overall the phone is acceptable ... i paid £175 for mine and for a while wished i'd bought a sony ericcson 850i for £120, but to be honest im warming to this one, it has a full featured mp3 player, radio as well, there are loads of third party apps, tom tom, office apps,book readers games if your bored, it takes up to a 2gb memory card which ive yet to fill .. i guess i just dont like enough music to be able to fill it and i have loads of applications on the card as well ... my only criticism which is prevalent with these and sony ericson phones is the ridiculous way these companys insist in using their own earphone connector .. mine is already needing a bit of tweaking every now and again to make sound in both earphones .. im not sure whether this is due to the socket or the headphones .. i think it just keeps going out of alignment because these companies just want you to buy their £20 headphones, you can get a 2.5mm set of headphones from a certain french supplier of cameras for £6,99 (in ear as well) so why can't all mobiles just have 2.5mm jack connectors .. beats me ? marketing scam as usual anyway thanks for you time Rating: Reviewed by graham on 11/10/2007 Nokia N 73 - sold as the best phone in the shop. I bought mine in Feb 2006 and have had two replacements - both with the same issue - Phone freezing when answering a call. Only way to get it working again is to take the battery out and switch back on. The second replacement handset is giving people calling me feedback i.e they can here themselves talking. 02 have been great and will swap out once again - Im not sure what to go for any ideas..? I am now on my 4th N73 due to reliability problems, phone going dead, cutting off calls and the number of times that I would like to throw it out of the window are countless. I have found it difficult to master the complex menus, the key pad is small and therefore difficult to text for big fingers. You need to ensure that you have your charger with you at all time as it only does about 50 minutes of talking and will only standby for aboyt 2 to 3 days between charges and that is with light texting and talking. The camera maybe brilliant but is difficult to handle, due to a very complex set of menus. This is a camera phone not a mobile phone. Useless for anybody who needs reliable mobile communication and if that is the case stay well away from the sales chat. Why did I ever persuaded to stop using my Nokia 6310i and by the way 3 is not great.. I cannot wait to get out of my contrcat and get back to Orange. You have been warned. Due to the ongoing problems i will list I smashed mine against the wall on Saturday 29th Sept...wasn't bright but trust me it had annoyed me too much So my screen is smashed obviously and I can't use it anymore, but to be hoenst it would have made not much difference I thought i had a dud then alot of my firends complained abut theres but First of all it cut out whenever it felt like it, and would lock and freeze Battery doesn't last long-especailly when using camera, the battery lasting long here is BS It connects to the internet radnomely even if keypad is locked Charger is useless, one minute it works next it don't...i have had this phone for only 5 months Software works with yahoo occassionally alarm sometimes doesnt work though you clearly set it... It constantly freezes up, it takes forever to send a text message and you keep getting texts to say you have missed a call even though you have never got the call in the first place. For a phone with so many features and decent camera i thought i had a top phone, but this was not to be, the list of problems is endless. The first problem i had was it would freeze it couldn't send and receive text messages a the same timw without crashing, it would wrongly report my memory was full even with a 1gb SD, this did improve after a downloaded firmware update. But no update will improve the awkward joystick or the over stiff buttons which are too small for anyone with man hands. Next on my hit list is the battery, not sure if its because it has more background things running or weather its just sh!t, but im used to a longer battery life. Next is the charger, what a flimsy load of junk this is, not only have i had to replace it after just 2 months, but now the input receiver is loose and won't charge unless held in a certain postion. I've used it for 8 months so I think I can give a fair review on this phone. - The operating system is so slow it makes me wanna cry whenever I need to go down into the menu. I really wonder what the engineers at Nokia were thinking when they released this phone.. that we'd not notice the N series operating system is complete rubbish? (N95 has same problem) - No auto-lock feature, so whenever you slide this thing in your pocket and forget to lock it, look forward to calling random people on your phonebook.. not a good thing when you're abroad and paying 40p a minute!! - Camera is beautiful, but getting it to open up and focus takes too long (around 30 seconds!) - Crashes more than any other phone i ever had, from menu freezing, to switching itself off to blocking outgoing calls etc.. Basically, I punished myself for 8 months, using this phone, as I was too proud to grab my old phone back (Samsung D600) or to admit to people that the N73 is rubbish.. I downloaded the update for text message sending which seems to speed it up a bit. the menu's are plentyfull and as always with Nokia's are easy to navigate, but it is painfully slow. I have just complained about the handset to Vodafone who tell me it must be switched off for 10 minutes a day to update itself for software updates, hence the reason it is slow and switches off when taking calls. This happens approx. 5 times in every 10 calls received!!! Without getting too technical, this means that the N73 is a little like a miniature computer with the ability to make phone calls. It is designed for power and flexibility, not for ease of use. If you feel intimidated by computers or the clock on your VCR is flashing 12:00 because your nephew hadn't been around to set it, this probably is not the handset for you. Too many people buy the handset with the most bullet points in the feature list instead of the handset with that is most suited to them. If you only need a phone that can make calls and send/receive messages, don't buy a model that will sing and dance - the features you don't use will only get in the way and you will be disappointed with your purchase. Enough ranting. On with the review! As a power user, I've found the N73 to be a capable device. For a S60 smartphone, it's quite compact, although it still manages to pack one of the largest and clearest screens I've seen on a non-touchscreen candybar handset. The camera is acceptable, although there are plenty of reviews around the web that focus on that particular feature, so I won't go into detail here. Overall build quality seems reasonable. (I've read some reviews that report creaky casings, but my handset doesn't seem to suffer from that.) The small keypad can be a little fiddly, but works well enough. On the software front, if you're familiar with S60 3rd Ed, you know what to expect. ***Always remember to upgrade to the latest firmware as soon as you get your handset*** The included applications generally work well and the number of 3rd party S60 3rd applications is growing all the time. The 220MHz ARM processor at the heart of this handset sometimes feels a little underpowered which can affect application responsiveness, but it gets the job done. All in all, a great phone for power users. As a software developer who is comfortable working with complicated electronic devices, I'm very happy with my handset and would give it 4/5. But as I said above, it's not for everyone. Unless granny happens to run a remote webserver which she needs to administer over SSH while she's out on a day trip with the WI, she probably won't want this phone. And finally, a response to Ayo > Considering that you must first remove the battery in this handset in order to remove the sim card, I'm not surprised it "freezes" for a while. Now for the cons: The biggest flaw in my opinion is the slow interface , using tones of features on this handset comes to a slope here! very slow! Headphones provided generate low volumne , need to kick up bitrate for the loudness the 3d stereo is not very impressive , however some think different. Body make is third grade , loose backcover , (known issue for handsets for all regions) Front Camera is for name's sake , the thing is horrible would'nt make a difference if it was absent. Conclusion: Overall it's a good phone , in terms on features it's good , BUT the most annoying issue with this phone is it's SLOW INTERFACE. if you're looking for a faster interface in the same segment and are a risk taker then turn towards the sony ericsson k800i , much better camera , fast interface but lesser on the features. It is very slow to navigate between screens and if you press buttons too fast, it simply freezes up and you have to switch it off and on again. Although I have my Bluetooth constantly enabled, you have to switch the phone off, take the battery out, replace it, and switch on again in order to use the Bluetooth. It seems to lose the Bluetooth all the time - just says 'failed'. Also, my phone constantly shows a symbol for 'one unread message' on the screen despite the fact that I have read and actually deleted all my messages. I have emailed Nokia but had no reply. At first the camera quality was a bit low but when you have used the camera for about a week the camera gets used to being used and works a treat. Always best to download latest software which will speed the phone up. One of minor down points of this phone is the memory but puting a 1gb memory card speeds up the phone a lot. Bought it in London, travelled on an extended trip to the US where suddenly few weeks after purchase the earpiece volume malfunctions - so when people speak it sounds like they're a million miles away. Nokia said as the phone isnt offered in the US, they wouldnt fix it, or even tell me where to take it to PAY to get it fixed while in the US!!! I was stuck in Los Angeles on business for several months. And the whole reason I had invested so much money in the N73 was to have a quad band phone! I tried to reason with them -- I tried to shame them, I tried to be sweet, be angry... but most of all I just tried to get them to understand how unbelievable it is for a company to offer a product meant for the glbal market, charge extra for this function, and then basically tell you we wont fix it unless you're back home... I mean I have an APPLE, and can you imagine if the US Apple stoe wouldn't fix a UK Apple c omputer??? I have been a faithful Nokia user for over a decade. NEVER AGAIN... Not only is this phone absolutely full of bugs (see all the negative reveiws below), what's even worse is Nokia's arrogant unhelpfulness when dealing with its problems. Since then, I have thrown the phone away. And have spoken to several other friends who've had similiar experiences with the N73... AVOID THIS PHONE LIKE THE PLAGUE. Like so many others, my N73 turns itself off whenever it feels like it or decides to freeze at the most inopportune moments. Slowness is another big problem with this phone as it seems to take so long just to simply switch screens. I even sent a one word text earlier. It took 2 minutes and 20 seconds before it was finally sent. You really are better off spending your money on 2 plastic cups and a bit of string!! I plugged the phone into the charger and it was all ok. I think ths phone is amazing and the camera on it is too. It looks good and is really substantial. Quite often friends sound like daleks thanks to my Nokia! All the easy to use functions of the old nokias has been lost in this phone and there are buttons which seem totally pointless. For example there's no automatic lock unless you are willing to have a pincode to unlock the phone - really very annoying! I regret buying this phone so would advise you to choose something else. On the plus side the camera is brilliant, it's just a let down when you want to make a phonecall or send a text! A million times better than the U600. I find it far more user friendly but then I love Nokia phones and their features. I've had no problems at all up to now - even the so claimed 'slowness' of loading menus etc - well I think this is over exagerated somewhat shall we say! I don't find it a problem that it literally takes a second - 2 if that - to open things! I recommend this phone and I doubt I will ever use another brand again now!! PROS: camera is superb, sound quality is excellent, volume is great,the software on the phone is great and bluetooth transfer is quick. CONS: buttons are to deep in so its hard to press the buttons, bluetooth may not accept some files and confusing buttons such as menu seeing that this is my first nokia phone. I have to say the N73 has a lot of useful features, and the 3MP camera takes very good quality pictures for a phone. However the phone is SLOW. There is a delay of between 1 and 5 seconds on most key presses when navigating or entering menus, and can sometimes be up to about 10 seconds. In addition, it now takes my phone TWO MINUTES every time I send a text: As soon as I hit send the phone freezes. I think the message gets sent sometime in the middle of the two minute wait because on one occasion I received a response from one of my texts before the phone had even finished sending it! I believe this 2-minute freeze is due to a software fault which could be overcome with a software update (if I am prepared to lose all my stored messages and pictures). I did try to upload my messages to a PC using the bundled software. Although most of them transferred some would not as the phone "stopped responding" - which probably means the phone "responded too slowly". To give an example of how slow this phone is generally: I set two alarms at night to wake me up in the morning. One is the alarm on my Nokia N73 and the other is on my (ancient) Nokia 5110. I pressed the "Clock" button on the N73, and in the time it took it to respond with the Clock settings screen I had completely set the alarm on my Nokia 5110! On the plus side the sound quality is ok and texts are as easy to write as they were on previous models. The camera is great (except, you've guessed it - it's slow to start). I would say comparing this handset with older Nokia models is like comparing DOS and Windows on the PC: DOS lacked features but was fast, whereas Windows looks much better, has more features, but can take a long time to respond to a user's input. Worst phone I have ever had ( after numerous Nokia's) Locks up if not answered during first ring, occasionally reboots for no reason, sim registration fails frequently ( new sim with this phone). Joystick button has an inbuilt defect, it falls out after a few months, phone requires numerous switch offs to reset and when then this doesn't work yo u remove the battery. Sold it(No business of exchanging in India) got a SE K800 and apalled by its features(for the price it was just a 3.2 MP camera nothing else). Finally got N73.. very user friendly, a good camera and S60 ver 3.. thats the main point. It is as good as what Nokia claimed, ie a multimedia computer.You can install any app, good music player etc. Best part is web browser and with Mini map ,I really had a wonderful browsing experience. I loved the music player and all of the Smart(phone) features. It was the standard bar design much comfortable than N93's flip(See my review in N93 section). Cons : back and sides of the phone lost the coating(Is it plastic ???). Still I will give a five, hasnt used a better feature rich phone. What really apppealed were the features of phone calling, sms, mms, voicemal, e mail, im, video calling, mobile tv, mp3, mp4, internet, radio, camera, dictophone and video camera and pda, basically the full works you can get on modern phones. I find the candybar solid design hard wearing and is a mark in favour of this, as oppposed to say, the N76 which is somewhat flimsy. On the whole if you want mobile internet, communication, camera and entertainment this is well worth £200. If you shop around there are also cheap monthly plans such as 3 mobile x series silver which I use. I do feel like Japan and Korea where smartphones are standard phones like this will take over the market in the west too. No problems with the actual phone usage as other people mentioned. The joystick and keys are small, but perfectly usable - and I have large fingers. If they were bigger the screen would be smaller or the whole handset would be bigger. Battery life is superb - 2 to 3 days of average use of internet, calls, music, radio, pictures and video. The supplied headphones sound a lot better than average. Admittedly it has refused to perform a couple of functions a couple of times, but this was easily solved by closing and opening applications or switching off and on - it is a mini computer after all! Rating: Reviewed by jillybill on 10/07/2007 I read the reviews and I ignored the bad ones because I so wanted this lovely looking phone and I waited and waited for It, when I got it I had to change it, as it kept freezing, had to change it again..it kept switching off! 3rd time lucky now had the N73 for 4 months and to be honest it's not all it's cracked up to be, may be because I don't use the phone to it's full potential, but I wanted it for the camera really. I updated the software over the internet, quite straight forward to do, didn't make hardly any difference to performance, It's slow, drops it's signal very easily and seems to be round the houses to do anything, and is a nightmare trying to find some of the functions it offers, not a straight forward phone at all, did I say it was slow! also no auto lock, so I've made plenty of unwanted calls! I have also dropped it a few times, I think because the buttons are not centred on the phone it gets top heavy and as I push the joy stick up, off it goes! but hey it shows its resilience I guess! but it does have a mind of it's own sometimes, one day it will switch off or restart next day it's fine. Nokia are adding all the knobs on but there not performing, it's an irritating phone that's not quite hitting the spot, I'm disappointed with it. I had the 6230i before and apart from a few things that are not really required it's a better phone than the N73 if not simply because it's reliable. Ask yourself if you want a phone that wont let you down or one with knobs on that don't play ball? It's a nice looking phone, and its got all the flashing bit's and bobs on but owners know it's a white rabbit. This phone locks up and you have to remove the battery and reboot it. If you select a contact and press the dial button it highlights the name and does not make the call. Try to dial a number manually and it selects a different numerical figure than you pressed. Lets try the sms it gets better as it now brings up the calander or your photo images anything but a new text message. Stay away from this phone like the plaig!!! This is a shear example of a manufacture releasing its products before fully testing them. I had the N70 before and it ran on the symbian software to, this phone also had its faults. I will not choose this Phone manufacture again! I was wary of the system crashes or pricture freezes mentioned below. However the sales person who also offered me the SE810 told me that Nokia have since sorted the firmware problems of earlier releases. I decided to purchase it. The phone has not hung or frozen once in the 2 months I have had it. It is a little slow starting up but apart from that is is a superb phone especially for someone who has to travel abroad frequently. I recommend getting a larger card than the 512 it comes with. A 2GB solves several memory storage problems. All in all, it is a great choice that I have no hesitancy in recommending. My N73 takes approximately 3 seconds to send a text message. If you are experiencing speed issues and your firmware is up to date and patched (SMS acc., etc.) then your message centre settings are probably incorrect - speak to your network's customer service department. Remember, this is a smartphone. If you don't understand what that means, then you probably don't want to buy one as its complexity will only frustrate you. For those who don't mind trading a little ease of use for a wealth of features though, you'll find a great mobile partner in the N73. Rating: Reviewed by Simeon on 02/07/2007 You need to learn to use it before it'll work...Remember back in the day when computers were rubbish, when you used to try and do lots of things and the computer always died - but someone else might come along and manage to use it - just with a little more patience... These nokia phones are in that era i think. I had the N70 and it was terrible... It had so many features, and was so almost brilliant.. but it just didn't work well enough. It crashed all the time, froze all the time, took about 5 minutes to load up.. But because it's features are so copius I didn't want to go back to an Ericsson.. So i got the N73, and so far so good. The camera is great - and good enough for most of the time to warrant leaving your digital at home. The functionality is also great-but think about what you're going to want to use. Don't install useless things. Delete your inbox as often as you can. On the N70 i ended up with about 1500 texts in my inbox and it crippled the phone... I'd try not to go over 300 now... I have had a multitude of problems with it and I find it impossible to imagine exactly which part of it can be deemed as being "smart". The operating system crashes. It continually drops calls. The navigation is slow. The call quality is poor. The keypad was designed for something with claws, rather than someone with human fingers. It keeps indicating that there is a voicemail waiting when there is none. The networks (and Nokia) should be ashamed at themselves for selling such an inferior piece of technology to unsuspecting consumers. Thankfully Orange have finally agreed to exchange mine for a Sony Ericson. Following this experience I will never use Nokia again. It's a shame this site doesn't allow a zero-star rating, because assigning this phone a single star is a travesty. Save yourself hours of frustration an avoid buying this piece of junk at all costs. But the useless N73 has put me off - probably for life. This phone is so slow you can send a text, boil a kettle and make a cup of tea, and the message will still be sending. Everything about this phone is slow. It's so slow that when you pick it up in sleep mode, it will take a good ten seconds to light up. You end up answering phone calls where the screen is blank. Dumb, stupid, rubbish. Needless to say I have NOTHING stored on the phone - to try and speed it up I've deleted everything: all tracks, pictures and messages. I put some of these Nokias through hell, drowning them, dropping them and even running them over...tough little things that they are (Not to mention easy to use) they always bounced back. So after a couple of years of defection - I tried to be unfaithful, cheating on Nokia with Samsung and even LG, I decided it was time to return to good old reliable Nokia. MISTAKE whats the point of having lovely mod con features when the handset can't even complete the sending of a text within a 30 second period?? Whats the point of looking all sleek, bright and shiny if you turn yourself off every so often, even in mid conversation. This phone is just to clever for its own good and doesn't seem to cope with its over the top functions. It crashes, the buttons are small and close together so I constantly press the green button to send instead of the ABC button, sending half complete text w hich cannot be cancelled once sent and then of course you might as well go and put the kettle on since the Nokia N73 will now have to freeze for a couple of minutes whilst it concentrates on the sending of said half complete message. Come back with your brew and hope it hasn't turned itself off for good measure and you'll find tuning it back on takes just long enough for you to nip to the corner shop for a packet of rich teas.......SLOW, it's a very disappointing reunion....the love is there no longer. I have since got a new one and have changed my mind now the software problems have been ironed out. It does quite simply have THE best camera I have seen on a phone. It's not my first smartphone, so I know the foibles of having to be careful not to swamp the memory. Keys too small? nope, big they're not, but no problem to use. As long as you remember to shut down applications you are not currently using, it just DOESN'T stall. The music player is great, volume no problem. Camera is a beauty, with all the controls you want and good auto settings. Zoom not bad, as good as you'll get without a 'real' mechanical lense. Build quality? - mine is the 'latest' music edition and it's not creaky, it isn't falling to bits, but it is light in weight and I guess thats what makes peaple dubious- but no bad thing on a phone that's really fairly big. The camera is excellent in good light conditions and average at night; be careful not to use the digital zoom too much as this distorts the final image and the extended zoom function (20x) is almost useless. I've found the stability and usability of the phone to be excellent, especially after updating the firmware. The keypad is small due to the size of the screen and can be a little fiddly and the phone is slightly bulky. Also make sure you use the keylock as you'll be calling people while the phone is in your pocket. Everyone below who says it crashes and is slow, this is because it has multi-tasking capabilities and if you dont close a programme when you finish, it wont have as much memory to take a call or take a photo. The reason the camera is slow to start is because its like having a nikon coolpix in ur phone!! ITS 3.2 megapixels! thats loads! the photos are going to be close to 1Mb and the videos even more, flicking through these really fast will cause it to freeze like it would on a PC. I run TomTom GPS on mine and except calls 20-30 times a day. great phone! i also run quick office and windows media player. The prolems arise sometimes within hours of unpacking the new phones from their box. The phone allows you make & recieve calls but the person you want to talk to cannot hear you speak. Camera is 3.2 mega pixel but pictures and videos are not up to my expectation for such high cost phone. The phone makes me misunderstand the meaning of “document viewer”. Pictures and tables in word documents couldn’t be viewed, full screen PowerPoint presentation is not supported and it gets stuck every time when I try to view a PDF document. Why should it supports multi-task when it’s so slow (sometimes can’t) to run any program that are even built-in while it is sold. The phone has been called as a good music player but I was unable to access the player after three weeks time. Phone gets stuck very often and needs to restart again and again. I thought N73 make my music player camera and phone to one device but that only increased my headache and worries making me hate NOKIA and shift to some other brand – N73; the worst phone I ever owned. The N73 is slow, unreliable, freezes, crashes, there's problems with the joysticks on them and simple features like moving phone numbers from phone to sim or auto lock aren't on it. Nice camera, if it works. Opening the tacky plastic cover for the Camera leaves the phone in a state of limbo for anything from 10 seconds to infinity (reboot!). Build quality is well below the standard I'd expect, the rear of the phone and the lens cover feel as though they've opted for a lighter plastic in order to detract from the "heavyweight" jibes thrown at 3G phones. Because of this they've traded build quality as the plastic feels so cheap and brittle, you'd be scarred of holding the damned thing in just one hand. Don't get me wrong, it is a good phone, the battery life is excellent, the camera is good althoug it is very slow and crashes half the time, and the music plays loudly, nevertheless, i can't wait to get a new phone. I was thinking about upgrading to the n95, but i have doubts if it is anything like this phone. Rating: Reviewed by Dave C on 15/05/2007 I've owned this phone for 2 months now and it's the best gadget I've ever owned. couple it up to a bluetooth GPS and it has amazing potential, the camera takes fantastic pictures in daylight, good enough to leave your camera at home. Low light shots are not brilliant but passable. TomTom works flawlessly and Landranger is an amazing app for the outdoor enthusiast. Mine has been kept updated with the latest firmware, it's fast and has NEVER crashed. The MP3 player works well and it has good speakerphone capabilities for handsfree calling. All in all this is a top piece of kit that wows my mates in the pub every time I use it. It is only a phone though so don't plan on it pulling you any chicks! Even the most basic phone operations are slow and cumbersome. Turning the phone on takes well over a minute, texts take a ridiculous minute and a half to send. There's no such thing as a quick text conversation with this clumsy mobile! The phone freezes when a call is received, menus are slow and it randomly crashes about once a week and the phone can only be reset by taking the battery out. Some of my buttons do not work properly, therefore, it is very hard to text, the screen scratches very easily and the camera slide camera opens by it’s self (if in a bag or something with many objects). I had the K800i and wanted a phone that was compatible in my car. This phone was. However it constantly cut out when fully charged and would re boot itself everytime someone phoned. I spoke to another user who said the same. All stored text messages cannot be deleted at the same time. All had to be deleted individually. The plus is the phone had a good camera and a good screen. I will be trading it in soon. Rating: Reviewed by Andy on 10/05/2007 well i have had the phone for about 2day now and i am annoyed with, the functions are very slow and nokia have missed out the quick and important functions that they used to have on the earlier models, i had a 6230i and that phone is 1000 times better then the n73, only good thing about the n73 is the camera and bigger screen, but apart from that its a very poor fone, looks great, but small keypad means errors when typing a number or text. not happy with the fone at all, i think nokia have made a poor fone in my eyes. i have had nokia phones since 1994 when i first got my mobile and this has been the worst. very slow start and switch off. Multimedia wise the phones awesome, music playback is load and crisp, and the battery lasts forever when playing music through the speakers which surprised me. All the full length movies i downloaded play brilliantly with no juddering or sound/picture slippage, which is more than can be said for the SE K800, or W850 that i had previously. Though the camera function is an altogether slower experience than SE phones, i would have to say the camera quality on this phone edges out the K800 i had previously. Definately worthy of 5 stars!!! Always bought Nokia for best usability features - and always regret moving away (if have to for work). N73 just does not do the small things right (you cannot easily see phone numbers of people who are in your address book if you want to call them from a land line). It is also very slow. I constantly have the answerphone symbol in the window despite there being no new message! When people have left messages they've come through 20 hours later! This is rated highly as a business phone, it's not very good for allowing the basic function of communication. I have been telling my handset provider that I have various problems with my handset and they say "this is a known problem" if that's the case, it shouldn't be on the market! You couldn't sell a car with known brake problems? So poor show Nokia, your worst phone to date I would say. Personally, I would give this phone no stars but sadly that's not an opinion! Rating: Reviewed by Saj on 22/04/2007 Ive had a lot of n-series mobiles (n70, n90, n91, n80, n93) and this beig the latest. i have to admit this is a really remarkable mobile. i did have problems where it hung but updating the firmware as always alway fixes literally every problem. ive had this mobile since november 06 and till now ive been happy with the operation. probably the best n series all rounder ive ever owned. small, lightweight, excellent camera, wicked sound (use the nokia ad-46 adaptor with your own headphones)... brilliant screen, crystal clear when calling and finally it has a brilliant battery And now for the people giving it a one-star rating...do not forget this mobile runs on a operating system like your computer runs windows. it is obviously going to be slow at first and may have bugs (it is not going to be fast like java mobiles). if you are not really a business person and is going to use the mobile only for calls and camera and so on then its not for YOU...esp if you dont even know wot symbian is..so please, get a phone that you are sure to be happy with..if music get the walkman series, if business get n-series or some of them windows mobile phones..if for both then get n series...simple..im out peace Rating: Reviewed by James on 18/04/2007 I just thought I had to write on here after reading all the bad reviews of this phone. I honestly can't fault it! Amazing camera, which is actually a usable alternative to a compact digital camera, brilliant Carl Zeiss lens with mechanical shutter! I would definately advise however to use a 2GB memory card, because you'll be wanting to take snaps of everything. Excellant S60 software, able to run TomTom navigator with ease, linked up with my bluetooth GPS with no problem. Works really well with T Mobile Web'n'Walk service and has a very functional web browser which users a pointer controled by the phone joy stick, meaning you have full control over the page you're viewing. I've not had any of the before mentioned problems of shutting down or taking '28 seconds' to send a text message and the keyboard and buttons are very reponsive. The fact that is dedicated buttons just for the camera makes it even more usable. Anyway I think this is a fantastic phone and would re commend it! Like many other people i have had similar problems switching itself of randomly,freezing, and the best of all joystick breaking for no apparent reason(meanibg the phone was completely unusable) It was fixed and i carried on using it and although i have just bitched about it i have to say i still love it, its like marmite!! Big plus is that i have TomTom on it which is awesome!!. And i can use msn messenger, put movies and music on it which is great. I think the problems that occur on the phone comes down to two things a bit of luck and symbian software, i sold several to friends and they have had no problem, but symbian software can be unpredictable and unreliable sometimes and on some phones(dont ask me why) im considering getting a new one and selling on my inncosistent one, plus i guess the newer versions have ironed out the problems a nd have the latest firmware. ^___^ ^0^/ Rating: Reviewed by Humza Sultan on 17/04/2007 i have this phone and it is great, it stores up to 15,00 songs, thats even better then the latest walkman phone which only stores upto 900 songs. It's usually just a quick reset before it works again, but it IS annoying. Also, the keys are a tad too small to use - I often find myself hitting the 'cancel' button by accident which sends the message into 'Drafts', meaning you've then got to find the message and then complete it. However even after those niggles the N73 is still a pretty good phone with many good features which is worth sticking with. First time was because it kept cutting out mid-conversation which I know anyone would find annoying. Second time was because it kept freezing when I tried to send text messages and when I went into my Image Gallery and the third time was because it kept turning itself off when it felt like it. Since then I've had problems two and three occuring often. And on top of all that it's been taking about 2 minutes to send a text message which is incredibly annoying! And it doesn't always send the message immediately. It often takes 15 minutes for the message to be delivered and I know it's the phones fault for this. Don't buy it. It's rubbish. I can't be bothered taking it back to the shop anymore so am going to buy a Samsung instead. I've never had a problem with a Samsung mobile. Overall: this is one of the worst phones I've ever owned. The 3rd phone has had a software update, but this seems to have cured nothing. The photo gallery cannot handle more then 20 pictures otherwise it goes into slow mode, ie you try to pan through your pictures then have to wait 30 secomds for it to catch up. The camera is great, so long as your dont use the zoom then it goes into soft focus mode. It wont let you save the picture so you can take another one. you have to close the slide then open it again. Trying to send texts give me cramp, due to the tight keypad, the joystick is curently held on with bluetack as it kept falling off. None of the problem will occurr PROVIDED you be sure to have a 1gb/2gb mini-SD card installed BEFORE you try to make the phone do everything you want! The N73 only has 42mb inbuilt, so you'll definitely need to add more capacity...Just plain commonsense you'd think. If you are on the Orange network, you'll find the phone tends to go onto the Internet without prompting when you turn on the phone, which is annoying. Solution?..Simply either press down the 'end call' button until this disconnecs or better still, dial 150 and have the internet disconnected altogether. Who really needs that on a mobile phone screen anyway?? The Camera is pure quality, as is the music player and FM radio. All in this is a superb, stylish phone. The battery power is excellent also. I got this phone around 3 weeks ago. The keys are terrible to use. The flashing blue light is very irritating. Most of all it hangs in between calls. Does not even restart. This time I tried to re-charge it and this it started working again. I am returning it first thing tomorrow. Don't buy it. The memory is extremely low if you dont have a memory card, which you haveto buy separatly. My new handset still crashes and takes ages to do anything.
