Nokia 6500 Classic Review

Rating:
Date: 06/03/2008
The Nokia 6500 Classic is a stunning phone, and one of the best-looking phones that Nokia has ever made. Available in a choice of black or bronze, this is the slimmest phone produced by Nokia so far, at just 9.5mm thick. The polished metal casing adds to the wow factor and gives the 6500 Classic a high quality feel. As well as looking and feeling good, the phone works well too, with an ergonomic keypad and navigation key.

Often with phones that look this good, the beauty turns out to be just skin deep. Not so with the 6500 Classic! This is a phone that is definitely a match for the competition. Let's start with the high-resolution display. This is a top notch TFT LCD panel with 16 million colours and 240 x 320 pixels, measuring 2 inches diagonally. It's one of the best screens available. The camera isn't quite in the same league, at just 2 megapixels and no autofocus. It's suitable for taking snaps and video clips but can't match the quality of the Nokia N95 or a real digital camera. The music player is good, and with 1 GB of memory installed in the phone you can store approximately 250 songs. The downside is that 1 GB is the maximum - there is no option to add a memory card.

The connectivity of the phone is excellent. It's a 3G phone, as well as supporting quadband GSM and EDGE, which means that you should be able to use it anywhere in the world, with fast data connection speeds on any network. It supports wireless Bluetooth connections, and USB cable connections too. The phone supports the full range of messaging - SMS, MMS and email with support for attachments - and can also browse the web. Additional features include Java games, voice controls and a voice memo recorder.

This phone would have been rated 5 stars if it were not for one problem: the battery life. The battery capacity of the 6500 Classic is definitely less than average, but this is typical for superslim phones. How big a battery do you think Nokia can fit inside such a slim case? If you are a really heavy phone user, or if charging the phone every other day sounds like too much work, then we recommend that you avoid this phone, and all superslim phones for that matter. Apart from this one problem, and the fact that this is a 3G phone that does not support video calling, we feel that Nokia have really got everything right with the 6500 Classic. It feels very much like a more refined and exclusive version of our other favourite, the Nokia 6300.

Features of the Nokia 6500 Classic include:

  • 3G
  • Camera: 2-megapixel camera
  • Video Camera: Supports video sharing, streaming, and recording capabilities (176 x 144 pixel resolution, MPEG4)
  • Display: QVGA 16 million colour, 320x240 pixel display
  • Music Player: Supports MP3, MP4, eAAC+ and AAC music files
  • Media Player: Integrated video player for download and playback or for streaming: 3GPP, H.263 video, MPEG-4, and AMR
  • Java Games: y
  • Ringtones: Use pre-loaded polyphonic midi ring tones, MP3, MP4, AAC, eAAC+
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB 2.0 port
  • Memory: Up to 920MB total memory
  • Messaging: MMS, SMS, e-mail
  • Internet: WAP 2.0, XHTML browser, HSCSD, CSD for browsing and as data modem, EDGE, GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) class 10 (4+1, 3+2), HSCSD (High-Speed Circuit-Switched Data) transfer up to 43.2 kbps in HSCSD networks
  • Operating Frequency: WCDMA 850/2100 and quadband GSM coverage (GSM 850/900/1800/1900)
  • Size: 110 x 45 x 9.5 mm,
  • Weight: 94 g

I've had the Nokia 6500 classic for over 2 years and it has been a superb phone. Being slim its very easily carried in a shirt of jacket pocket. I'm now looking for another one as I stupidly let mine in a trouser pocket and it went through the washing machine. In normal conditions it will most probably survive being immersed in water but a 50 wash and spin is way too much for any phone

I've been using my Classic for more than two years now, and I love it. It has everything (featurewise) I want from a phone, and keeping it in a decent case means that it still looks nearly as good as new. Gave only four stars as it's not a full feature phone, but otherwise I have no regrets choosing this handset. It's been reliable, dropped a few times, is easy to use, and takes OK photos and looks great. Web browsing is excellent on Opera Mini 5 ('other mobile browsers are available!'), and with an external GPS receiver I even have a Satnav running on the device. My only gripe is that expandable memory would have been a very good thing.

Without a doubt this is the worst phone I have ever owned. The battery time is shockingly bad and all it takes is one 20 minute call to drain it to half power. I've turned it off before with half a battery only to turn it on 2 hours later to find the battery beeping at me. How can it drain the battery when it's not even switched on? You can add to this the number of times that it's frozen and it's inability to get a clear signal and it's definitely a front runner for worst phone ever. Having used other manufacturers for my last two phones I decided to go back to Nokia. I won't be doing that again. Terrible, terrible phone. I have two other friends who have the same handset and have all complained about the same things. Don't let the looks and features of this phone deceive you into getting one. Stay well clear.

Worst phone I've ever used. I don't buy Nokia anymore - they used to be the reliable brand but after this phone, they will never have my custom again. Battery life is awful and after just one phone call of about 10mins, your a cell down. It has to be charged on a daily basis. The phone also has a habbit of cutting out, freezing and shutting down at random - and also in the middle of calls. Its small, its light but it is an invonvenience. I've had cheaper, better mobile phones and I will be returning to those manufacturers.

O Overview: This phone has been one of the best phones I've ever had. It looks stunning, partiularly in bronze (the one that I have). O Pro (+): Text messaging is brilliant, it's totally free flowing, you haven't got to exit and write another message, you can write as much as you like, obviously taking up several messages. O Pro (+): The memory life on the phone is great, I have loads of ringtones/music/pictures/txts and it doesn't run slow. O Pro (+): This phone has been the most durable one I've had, I've spilt a fizzy drink and water on it and its been dropped in a bowl of water, I took it apart and dried it out with a hairdryer for a few minutes and was still working where most phones would have died at that point. O Con (-): The only reason I have not given this phone 5* is that the only gripe I have about this phone is that the battery life is poor, there's been instances where I have not used the phone and it lasts for about 2/3 days

Overall, i enjoy the Nokia 6500 classic. It is a stylish phone and simple to use. My previous phone was the Nokia 3310, a phone well known for it's durability. This phone shares that. Numerous drops, bangs and bashes have left it with only a few scuffed corners. The camera has only let me down in dim lighting conditions (the flash isn't particularly helpful). I have only one bone to pick with Nokia about this phone and that is the battery charger. This phone charges via it's micro-usb port, but the charger and phone have to exchange a signal before the battery actually starts charging (presumably so that you have to use a nokia charger to charge the thing). This is all very well unless the battery has actually -run out-. In this case, unless you can coax out the last of the battery's charge and get your phone turned on again, it won't charge for the world and you might as well throw it away. Well done, Nokia, for that amazing oversight. Just as a pointer, i did find a way out of this - by applying 3v from a pair of AA batteries to the relevent pins inside the phone, thus booting it up and starting the charger, but i don't recommend this unless you know what you are doing.

Battery life is poor, calls drop out whenever they feel like and a quick "will be home in 20 mins conversation" turns into telephone tag and ends up in texting anyway. T-Mobile have been dire at swapping out this phone and have only agreed (because I behaved like a pit bull) to replace it with the same phone - which I should imaging from readijgn every elses' comments, will have the same issues all over again! Mettalic distortion sounds when making calls too. Stick with the 6300.This phone may look good but try and use is to make and take calls - pointless. I am now tied into an 18 month contract with a pants phone. I would give zero stars if the option had been available on the phone rating button.

The worst phone ever. Looks good but doesn't work. I've had nearly every problem described in this review section and can't believe they are still being sold! It won't charge, the camera doesn't work, intermittent speaker, software bugs, absolute rubish. Avoid the misery I have experienced and look for something else. PS If there was a zero star rating I would have gone for it.

Had this phone for 16 months now, and it's done alright! As ever Nokia make any easy to use phone. The battery life isn't that good (charge every 2 days with minimal use), and the camera isn't that good, but I haven't had any problems with it. When it came out it was a very good looking phone compared to most but looking forward to upgrade now...

I've had this phone for about a year now! And I've had no issues with it what-so-ever. Yes the battery life can-not to be excused as it is very poor but the phone itself is small and light. The memory on the phone has to be the best feature of the phone. I can store as many text messages on here as well as store all my pictures and games. I have no regrets getting this phone as it's allowed me to do everything that I wanted: text, call and allow it to fit in my pocket perfectly.

Had this phone for almost all of the 18month contract with orange now (just over 15 months) and had no problems with it at all. Great size phone to handle in everyday life being so thin - fits in most pockets unnoticably!, the button size is more than fine for texting etc, camera is pretty good, just an all-round easy to use phone with lots of memory for music to set as ringtones or listen to etc. Internet use isnt particularly great but i didn't expect that with this kind of mobile. If you are a fan of Nokias then this phone is a great choice - familiar menu system, familiar ease of use, familiar reliability. Battery life and sound has always been fine for me too. I'd recommend it, and just my next nokia is as good!

Stay clear! Love the looks but battery life is terrible and speaker keeps breaking; I bought 3 for work and am now faced with replacing all of them - and Nokia still won't allow me to swap models. It surprises me that a lot of people say the battery life is ok for a phone that size; what's important is that Nokia say it lasts 9 days - and it doesn't!

I am coming to the end of my contract with this phone so i have had it for 18months. It is a great little phone and yes very stylish. It has lasted me 18 months but they are a few downfalls. The camera is ok but after a few months the camera became fuzzy and very low quality espeically in low lighting (even with the flash) the phone also likes to turn its self off every now and again and once it is back on it takes a hour for me to send and receieve messages again. It is great for the first few months so is great for a short term thing but after a few months it starts to go down hill. althou the signal is very good for me anyway, and has a few good qualities such as the games, music player, storage and calender

Just got the pink 6500 Nokia. I loved the design but doesn’t function well for web & walk. My other phone N6300 is simply the best, performs better and highlights links you can navigate with when you are online in a web page e.g. on a hotmail page that refers you to another. This isnt the case for N6500, it opens a web page and doesn’t highlight links. This new phone isn’t an improvement of the old or something similar. The only newness about it is its colour and slimness. It has a low battery life. I wouldn’t recommend to anyone except they want a toy for a phone. Sorry, but I'm having to return mine.

This phone looks lovely and shiny and neat BUT I think it is flimsy, the top of the phone comes off if you push/pull it out of your bag or pocket and superglue wont keep it there! The keypad is small and difficult to use and quite tempermental. The good points are the music player and camera which are sufficient for my occasional use but the quality of the phone lets it down big time. And, you cant replace the case - I've looked everywhere - carphone warehouse want £50 plus to repair "cosmetic" problems, which in my opinion is money better spent on another phone! I know of 2 other people whose top has come off.

Hit and miss -- if you're lucky enough to get a functioning model, you might like this phone. If, like, me, you end up with a dud, it's really not worth it. The microphone on my first handset just started cutting out mid-conversation after 8 months of use and little wear and tear. After convincing T-Mobile to replace it with a new handset, I find this one is also a dud, but with a different set of problems. The bluetooth doesn't work at all -- bummer if you ever want to use a headset! This microphone also has problems -- unless it's a problem of the actual reception -- and occasionally makes everything sound like the cyborg. I'm a very loyal Nokia customer, but I would never buy this phone again.

I upgraded from a nokia 6300 to the 6500 classic about a month ago. Its good to look at but I have had terrible reception problems and the phone also drops calls, very annoying. I have not had one call without problems. Orange have given me a replacement phone but the same problem persists, thats two in a row. It was also disappointing to find the 6500 has less functions than the 6300. I want to change back to the nokia 6300i but orange are most unhelpful. It seems they would prefer an unhappy customer stuck with this piece of junk I can only use outside. dont get a 6500, Its not just me, read the other lousy reports. you have been warned.
