Nokia 6500 Classic Review

Rating:
Date: 06/03/2008
The Nokia 6500 Classic is a stunning phone, and one of the best-looking phones that Nokia has ever made. Available in a choice of black or bronze, this is the slimmest phone produced by Nokia so far, at just 9.5mm thick. The polished metal casing adds to the wow factor and gives the 6500 Classic a high quality feel. As well as looking and feeling good, the phone works well too, with an ergonomic keypad and navigation key.

Often with phones that look this good, the beauty turns out to be just skin deep. Not so with the 6500 Classic! This is a phone that is definitely a match for the competition. Let's start with the high-resolution display. This is a top notch TFT LCD panel with 16 million colours and 240 x 320 pixels, measuring 2 inches diagonally. It's one of the best screens available. The camera isn't quite in the same league, at just 2 megapixels and no autofocus. It's suitable for taking snaps and video clips but can't match the quality of the Nokia N95 or a real digital camera. The music player is good, and with 1 GB of memory installed in the phone you can store approximately 250 songs. The downside is that 1 GB is the maximum - there is no option to add a memory card.

The connectivity of the phone is excellent. It's a 3G phone, as well as supporting quadband GSM and EDGE, which means that you should be able to use it anywhere in the world, with fast data connection speeds on any network. It supports wireless Bluetooth connections, and USB cable connections too. The phone supports the full range of messaging - SMS, MMS and email with support for attachments - and can also browse the web. Additional features include Java games, voice controls and a voice memo recorder.

This phone would have been rated 5 stars if it were not for one problem: the battery life. The battery capacity of the 6500 Classic is definitely less than average, but this is typical for superslim phones. How big a battery do you think Nokia can fit inside such a slim case? If you are a really heavy phone user, or if charging the phone every other day sounds like too much work, then we recommend that you avoid this phone, and all superslim phones for that matter. Apart from this one problem, and the fact that this is a 3G phone that does not support video calling, we feel that Nokia have really got everything right with the 6500 Classic. It feels very much like a more refined and exclusive version of our other favourite, the Nokia 6300.

Features of the Nokia 6500 Classic include:

  • 3G
  • Camera: 2-megapixel camera
  • Video Camera: Supports video sharing, streaming, and recording capabilities (176 x 144 pixel resolution, MPEG4)
  • Display: QVGA 16 million colour, 320x240 pixel display
  • Music Player: Supports MP3, MP4, eAAC+ and AAC music files
  • Media Player: Integrated video player for download and playback or for streaming: 3GPP, H.263 video, MPEG-4, and AMR
  • Java Games: y
  • Ringtones: Use pre-loaded polyphonic midi ring tones, MP3, MP4, AAC, eAAC+
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB 2.0 port
  • Memory: Up to 920MB total memory
  • Messaging: MMS, SMS, e-mail
  • Internet: WAP 2.0, XHTML browser, HSCSD, CSD for browsing and as data modem, EDGE, GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) class 10 (4+1, 3+2), HSCSD (High-Speed Circuit-Switched Data) transfer up to 43.2 kbps in HSCSD networks
  • Operating Frequency: WCDMA 850/2100 and quadband GSM coverage (GSM 850/900/1800/1900)
  • Size: 110 x 45 x 9.5 mm,
  • Weight: 94 g

Other than that it was one of the best phones I have had. Texting was easy becuase of its perfect sized keypads. The 1GB Memory is enough for many phones. Its slim and black sexy appearance is what caught my eye and for the many I know that have bought this phone.

Without a doubt this is the worst phone I have ever owned. The battery time is shockingly bad and all it takes is one 20 minute call to drain it to half power. I've turned it off before with half a battery only to turn it on 2 hours later to find the battery beeping at me. How can it drain the battery when it's not even switched on? You can add to this the number of times that it's frozen and it's inability to get a clear signal and it's definitely a front runner for worst phone ever. Having used other manufacturers for my last two phones I decided to go back to Nokia. I won't be doing that again. Terrible, terrible phone. I have two other friends who have the same handset and have all complained about the same things. Don't let the looks and features of this phone deceive you into getting one. Stay well clear.

Worst phone I've ever used. I don't buy Nokia anymore - they used to be the reliable brand but after this phone, they will never have my custom again. Battery life is awful and after just one phone call of about 10mins, your a cell down. It has to be charged on a daily basis. The phone also has a habbit of cutting out, freezing and shutting down at random - and also in the middle of calls. Its small, its light but it is an invonvenience. I've had cheaper, better mobile phones and I will be returning to those manufacturers.

O Overview: This phone has been one of the best phones I've ever had. It looks stunning, partiularly in bronze (the one that I have). O Pro (+): Text messaging is brilliant, it's totally free flowing, you haven't got to exit and write another message, you can write as much as you like, obviously taking up several messages. O Pro (+): The memory life on the phone is great, I have loads of ringtones/music/pictures/txts and it doesn't run slow. O Pro (+): This phone has been the most durable one I've had, I've spilt a fizzy drink and water on it and its been dropped in a bowl of water, I took it apart and dried it out with a hairdryer for a few minutes and was still working where most phones would have died at that point. O Con (-): The only reason I have not given this phone 5* is that the only gripe I have about this phone is that the battery life is poor, there's been instances where I have not used the phone and it lasts for about 2/3 days

Overall, i enjoy the Nokia 6500 classic. It is a stylish phone and simple to use. My previous phone was the Nokia 3310, a phone well known for it's durability. This phone shares that. Numerous drops, bangs and bashes have left it with only a few scuffed corners. The camera has only let me down in dim lighting conditions (the flash isn't particularly helpful). I have only one bone to pick with Nokia about this phone and that is the battery charger. This phone charges via it's micro-usb port, but the charger and phone have to exchange a signal before the battery actually starts charging (presumably so that you have to use a nokia charger to charge the thing). This is all very well unless the battery has actually -run out-. In this case, unless you can coax out the last of the battery's charge and get your phone turned on again, it won't charge for the world and you might as well throw it away. Well done, Nokia, for that amazing oversight. Just as a pointer, i did find a way out of this - by applying 3v from a pair of AA batteries to the relevent pins inside the phone, thus booting it up and starting the charger, but i don't recommend this unless you know what you are doing.

Had this phone for almost all of the 18month contract with orange now (just over 15 months) and had no problems with it at all. Great size phone to handle in everyday life being so thin - fits in most pockets unnoticably!, the button size is more than fine for texting etc, camera is pretty good, just an all-round easy to use phone with lots of memory for music to set as ringtones or listen to etc. Internet use isnt particularly great but i didn't expect that with this kind of mobile. If you are a fan of Nokias then this phone is a great choice - familiar menu system, familiar ease of use, familiar reliability. Battery life and sound has always been fine for me too. I'd recommend it, and just my next nokia is as good!

The camera is ok but after a few months the camera became fuzzy and very low quality espeically in low lighting (even with the flash) the phone also likes to turn its self off every now and again and once it is back on it takes a hour for me to send and receieve messages again. My other phone N6300 is simply the best, performs better and highlights links you can navigate with when you are online in a web page e.g. on a hotmail page that refers you to another. This isnt the case for N6500, it opens a web page and doesn’t highlight links. This new phone isn’t an improvement of the old or something similar. The only newness about it is its colour and slimness. It has a low battery life. I wouldn’t recommend to anyone except they want a toy for a phone. Sorry, but I'm having to return mine.

The keypad is small and difficult to use and quite tempermental. The good points are the music player and camera which are sufficient for my occasional use but the quality of the phone lets it down big time. And, you cant replace the case - I've looked everywhere - carphone warehouse want £50 plus to repair "cosmetic" problems, which in my opinion is money better spent on another phone! Hit and miss -- if you're lucky enough to get a functioning model, you might like this phone. If, like, me, you end up with a dud, it's really not worth it. The microphone on my first handset just started cutting out mid-conversation after 8 months of use and little wear and tear. After convincing T-Mobile to replace it with a new handset, I find this one is also a dud, but with a different set of problems. The bluetooth doesn't work at all -- bummer if you ever want to use a headset! This microphone also has problems -- unless it's a problem of the actual reception -- and occasionally makes everything sound like the cyborg. I'm a very loyal Nokia customer, but I would never buy this phone again.

I've had my 6500 for nearly two years. Its an ideal perfect looking phone, fits into every pocket, with a sleek design, easy to use keypad, the ideal looking phone. Its 1 GB memory is more than enough, even as a teenager and all my music i've still yet to completely fill it. The specifications are amazing however it seems the 6500 slide has a few more features, like radio, which i find very fustrating. It does have amazing spec, the camera is easy, its lightweight, an amazing phone. However the battery barely lasts for 2 days, im having to charge it overnight. Even if you charge it, whilst im on the phone, it will still cut out and die. It has taken nearly 2 days to light back up again and in that time ive been without that phone, which is obviously a pain. However as i mentioned before i have also purchased the Nokia 6500 slide and i've been very happy with that. It has more features a better camera+lens, radio and msn. Although it does not have as much internal me mory, you're able to insert a memory card. I very much prefer the slide and recommend the preferred purchase of that over the classic.

I've had this phone for almost a year, and if I had a penny for every time I felt like replacing it with my LG 3300 clam I'd afford one already. I've never dropped this phone or overloaded it with music and pictures but have had the batteries replaced (now on my 2nd batt, planning to get a new 3rd one). I don't care too much about charging every 2 days since getting a back up charger isn't all that hard, but in my case its almost a daily basis as my batteries appear to die very fast deaths. The original charger also expresses a chilling squeal while charging the phone, which makes me wonder if it will eventually explode? Phone software claims it can make video calls, but its greyed out so what the heck? Picture quality is quack compared to SE and even my 1.8 MG ole LG. And yes, the phone occasionally "screams" while in the middle of a call rendering me almost deaf. And it turns off on its own whim with nothing staring back at me but a grey screen, pressing down the Cancel button to reboot the phone won't work so I have to open the plastic bottom and remove the battery manually. I get my SMSs a few days late sometimes, my phone may be turned on but no calls come in - then I get a msg telling me I have so many missed calls or I have a dozen voice msgs. Great looking phone but with all its wonky problems it compares to a bad date in a fancy restaurant. Stick to something more reliable.

I have had this phone since last july and am very pleased with it. I had noticed peoples problems with it not charging.. apparently it just dies. This is NOT TRUE IN MOST CASES. What happens it when you plug it in it seems to not be charging but it is, wait a few hours and you can turn it on and it works as usual. This always happens when you run the battery down to the point it turns itself off, if you don't allow it to do that it'll be fine. As for practical use, yes I agree the pad can sometime annoy but then I have that issue with all phones i've ever used. What pleases me about this phone is it does the job of being a phone very well and there are no real gimmicks. Only real true downside to me is its battery life of 1 day if you use call people a fair amount.

This is an awful phone, and having never used anything other than a Nokia, I was seriously thinking of another model. Bat life is weak, and texting is very difficult. Mine has broken twice, and now the only way I can hear the person on the other end of the phone is if I have it on loud speaker. This means that when I'm out and about I either have to find a quiet corner to make a call, or not bother. Another issue for me is that when you recieve a text, it doesn't give you the option to delete - it just sends it to your inbox. This means that your inbox gets filled up with a load of irrelevant stuff, which you have to manually delete, when you have the time. My memory has now filled up, and everytime I try a mass delete, it switches the phone off after about 40 messages, which means I am constantly filling my phone up now. The other issue with this is that when you turn your phone back on, it takes nearly an hour for the message facility to return (as the memory is so full) and theerefore you cant send or recieve any messages during that time. I advise everyone to avoid this phone. What happened to the good old reliable Nokias...

The connectivity via the USB lead is touch and go as it seems to sometimes connect and sometimes not. The sync part is ok but the names and addresses get cut short. the camera works well for a 2 meg camera, though the video doesn't last more than a couple of minutes. You would need to buy screen protectors, which are quite cheap as the screen scratches too easily. As I previously stated, the one big downfall is the speaker, I can barely hear the phone ring, the music playback is scratchy and voice is very quiet, even on max setting. I will have to do an exchange for another which is a pain transferring numbers etc. However, the design is nice, it is a fairly robust phone considering its size and I would recommend it.

I ordered one of these because I have always had good quality phones from Nokia - That is until I received the 6500 Classic. With this model, Nokia seem to have forgotten the primary function of a mobile phone - That is to TALK to people. The in-call sound quality is appalling. It sounds similar to having a conversation with a Dalek. This is great if you're a Dr. Who fan, but for the rest of us humans, we'd prefer to have clear quality audio. Apart from that, everything else about the phone is fantastic! I sent my phone back within 24 hours. DON'T BUY THIS PHONE IF YOU WANT TO TALK TO PEOPLE!!!

Good points - It's a nokia and it looks great! Bad points - misses calendar appointments randomly by either half an hour up to about six hours; occasionally misses the alarm in the morning; short battery life; speaker on the back of the phone that makes any mp3 files sound distorted; headphone usb cable is unreliable as the music will come out of the speaker if the cable is moved. This phone is probably one of the worst Nokia that I have bought - may accidentally on purpose lose it and claim insurance.......... Give it 2 stars (reluctantly) - extra point because it is a Nokia!

I spend about 1 hour a day in calls on this phone, send a few text messages and get two days out of the battery. The camera quality is good for a basic camera but then it's not a handset you buy for the camera. I've read the reviews that reel off problems with the screen and battery and can only conclude that either they got a bad handset or I was very lucky. Have had the phone now for 7 months. When I first got the phone I had a problem with it switching off. It happened twice. I had to simply leave the phone, plug it into the plug charger and leave. After a few hours I could turn it back on but it then had no battery and would require charging properly. The PC cable DOES NOT charge the phone to full battery, it can top up the battery but do not rely on this to charge the phone as this will result in the phone switching off. I have had no problems with the phone other than this. The battery life isn't great, lasting 2-3 days, depending on how much I use the phone. But I charge the phone every night anyway, so its not an issue. Some people will struggle to text with the keys, but most people have the sense to try a phone out in the shops before purchasing it and most new phones have small keys. This is not the worst for small keys I've seen by far. Never had a problem with the speaker that is mentioned below. Phone looks great, weighs nearly nothing and is so small you forget its in your pocket. Only thing I miss would be a flashlight/torch option that you find on some other phones... why don't they all offer this if they have a flash anyway.

Best features are the overall design, excellent bright and clear screen and logical user interface (as usual with Nokia). My initial fear of losing the thing as it was just so thin and light has been overcome by buying a neat leather case, which also helps to protect the phone from scratching. I mean, really hot and makes the side of my head uncomfortably warm. Have to swap sides on longer calls. Reception is poor also, but I assume the network provider is somewhat at fault here. Not had my phone long but really really pleased with it. The battery life is not the issue that its cracked up to be, as someone else pointed out on here, a lot of people will be connecting it to USB a lot of the time etc anyway. Personally, got myself a car charger...so i've never had a problem with battery life. It really annoys me when people review phones on here but say really idiotic things, like "N95 is better phone". Well duh...obviously the spec is better (and lets not talk battery life / bugs on that one eh?). Its a totally different phone for a totally different market! Its like saying "I had a landrover, and I could drive up mountains and fit all my camping gear in it, and i sold it for a porsche boxster, which is rubbish cos its only got two seats and i cant go off roading in it and i cant fit my camping stuff in it. So its rubbish and I want a landrover". And look, for most phones, you will hear horror stories about reliability. My mate wont touch samsung phones because he had one bad one (U600). I know people who have never had a problem with the U600. I wish people would just remain a bit open minded. Just because you had a fault on yours, dont sit there going "my phone dont work so they must all not work this is rubbish". Personally, I have no need for a brick like, jack of all trades but master of none style phone. If I want to take photos, I use a real good digital camera. If I want to listen to music at high sound quality, I use a dedicated mp3 player and B&O headphones. This is a good mobile phone...nothing more, nothing less!! And yes it looks good. And if ur worried about the back snapping, LET THE GUY AT THE PHONE STORE DO IT AS YOU'RE BUYING IT!!!!! With non-upgradeable memory, you will hardly ever need to take it off anyway!! If you wear a suit to work, this is a stylish, mid-range 3G phone that you will enjoy using. If you want a be-all, swiss army knife, house brick with a disasterous battery life, then get something else.

The phone has a fault that both Nokia & Orange are aware of but aren't telling customers about at the time of ordering, It is to do with the Address book, if you try to transfer/copy your address book from the simm to the phone you'll loose them, you'll also notice that you addresses aren't in any order, frustrating when you try to find one!

Got this phone as a free upgrade with Vodafone. The battery life was very poor. After a full charge the phone only provided around 1 days standby time before requiring a re-charge. As I am required to be on call out of hours the phone was really not suitable for my purposes. Other than that I found it easy to use, the only other issue is that it has only the slim line usb charge option, so no charging with an older nokia charger. I've rated this phone 2 stars brought down heavily by the poor battery life.

Had this phone for a month or so, wallpaper just resets itself randomly, ring tones reset themselves when I switch it off, battery life is a joke, hence why I have to switch it of leading to it resetting itself.. Wouldnt recommend it. In fact wouldnt even keep it if I had a longer warranty!!

Only thing Nokia did not consider is a general i/o port with rectangular shape and a long plug for earphones. When earphones are plugged you need five cm more space in your pocket to store the phone and rectangular shaped port is vulnerable for motion. In six months I got the plug of my earphones broken and it is not available in the market so far. What was wrong with the standard circular shaped earphone sockets? Nokia has a bad consumers feedback system.

I hated my E900 as it was always doing things I hadn't intended on doing as I'd catch the touch screen by accident with my thumb. None of that nonsense here. Nokia have done it again, thinking of the consumer rather than how much can they fit into a phone. I never used the memory card slot in my samsung so think this have the 1G of memory in the phone is ideal for me. I have dropped the phone on ceramic floor tiles a few times & it hasn't harmed it in any way either. So its tougher than it looks too. Love the large screen too.The small keypad suits my short fingers so havent had any trouble using it at all.Having false nails caused the numbers to come off my samsung & thats not happening here either. Guys, I seriously don't see what's wrong with everyone - the 6500 classic is a brilliant phone and I simply can't understand why everyone has issues with it. look - stylish, classic and pretty damn sexy. Doesn't leave a bulge in ur pocket or take up vital space in a matchbox handbag features - okay not the best, but if you want to be able to make and receive calls, send a few text and picture messages (and lets face it thats what 99.9% of people use their mobiles for!!) it does what it says on the tin camera - for a camera so slim, i think the picture quality is pretty fab memory - ok so no memory card but how much space do you need? 1GB is more than enough to satisy most people MP3 player - sound quality great, and stores a decent number of tunes to keep you occupied battery life - no issues here. Instead of using the phone straight away, leave it to charge for about 13/14 hours before using (as most phones instruct you to do) for the first time and then your battery life will be as per manufacturer states. I had bluetooth on all the time, spoke for at least an hour a day, sent numerous SMS and the battery still lasted 3.5 days without the need to recharge call volume - if you read the user manual, states quite early on that you use the navigation button in the middle to turn volume up/down I think if you have a little patience, read through the manual, and keep your expectations realistic, you can't help but to be amazed by the phone. For what you are paying - is a bargain!! For the record, im on Orange in the UK
