Nokia 6300 Review

Rating:
Date: 02/06/2007
The Nokia 6300 is one of the most popular and highly-rated Nokia phones for several years. It's an attractive slimline phone with a stainless steel finish, and contains all of the features that most people want from a phone: a high quality camera with video recording capability, a stereo MP3 player, built-in FM radio, wireless Bluetooth connectivity and a slot for a memory card. The camera isn't as good as the cameras in Nokia's high-end smartphones: it's rated at 2 megapixels and doesn't have autofocus, so it won't replace a dedicated digital camera, but is good enough for taking casual pics. One of the main selling points of the 6300 is its user-friendliness: it's as easy to use as the Nokias of old, and it does what most people need without the complications of Nokia's high-end Nseries phones. Its only weakness is battery life, which is to be expected as the size of the phone doesn't allow for a larger battery to be fitted. If you can live with this one flaw, then we recommend the Nokia 6300 to you.

Features of the Nokia 6300 include:

  • Camera:2 megapixels with 8x digital zoom
  • Video Camera: 176 x 144 pixels
  • Display: TFT, 16.7 million colours, 240 x 320 pixels (2 inches)
  • Music Player: MP3, MP4, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, H.263, H.264 formats / FM stereo radio with Visual Radio
  • Ringtones: 64-voice polyphonic ringtones, MP3 ringtones, Video ringtones
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0, USB
  • Memory: 7.8 Mbytes plus microSD card slot (expandable up to 2 Gbytes)
  • Messaging: SMS, MMS, email, Instant messaging, Nokia Xpress audio messaging
  • Internet: WAP, GPRS Class 10, EDGE, XHTML web browser
  • Talk Time: Up to 3.5 hours
  • Standby: Up to350 hours
  • Operating Frequency: GSM Triband 900/1800/1900 MHz
  • Size:106 x 43 x 12 mm
  • Weight: 91g

If they had fitted a 3.5mm socket then it would be fine but the 2.5mm socket is a pain. How they can supply such a good phone with really bad earphones is madness!!!

When I first got this phone, I thought to give it 5/5. However after extended use I've got a few problems with it. I nearly voted 4/5, but the biggest problem is the voice quality, coming from the solid Nokia 6230, I'm dissapointed. Try listening to someone near a busy road, you might struggle even with the volume set to maximum and the microphone doesn't pick up the sound as clearly. Other niggles: timestamp of received SMS is burried in options that you have to scroll through, why it's not on screen or at the bottom of the message is a mystery to me. battery is good enough for the size of the display, you will soon flatten it. replying to SMS requires me to select text message each time from a list. four-way navigation control could be better.

I have owned my 6300 for 3 months now and i am overjoyed with it. For some reason last year i got the N80 little knowing i'd have suffered less if someone had forced a house brick up my **** without lubrication! This phone has all the attributes that made me adore the nokia brand starting many moons ago, it's got a great feel, the functionality is brilliant and it doesn't try and take over and NASA for me! The battery life is excellent lasting me 3 full days before charging (and i use it a hell of a lot) I will admit that there are phones out there with better camera's, but it's is definately good enough for a quick snap. If i'm going somewhere where i know i want to take photos, i'll take a camera! All in all welcome back nokia, after my N80 i almost swapped brand but you've brought me back from the edge with the 6300...thank you

Even with these foybles i'll still keep this phone and will hold onto it for a very long time as nothing looks as nice as this phone period.. This is a classy phone that really is built well. It has a certain weight to it, that suggests quality, though it ain't heavy. Its not going to break in your pocket like some of those 3G phones with the stupid plastic joy stick. It is however much cheaper, and when getting my phone as an upgrade, I was tempted to look at the other phones which were free to me, but would normally cost more. They were soo plasticky!! I am so pleased with mine. I truly believe it is the best phone Nokia ever made(always had Nokia) and I am buying anaother one for spare for use in ten years time when this one wears out!)(cos they ain't gonna build another like it!!)

Not as big thumbs up for me I'm affraid. The battery is very poor, lasting max 1 and a half days. make a few long calls or use the camera and it is seriously flawed. Having switched from a Sony Erricson w810i, I now wished I hadn't. Some of the navigation especially around the files and actual texting options is laboured and not as slick as the phone itself. Pretty looking phone doesn't stand up at all on features, battery or functionality.

Another great from Nokia. Stunning quality display, simple to use, full of features. It is quite slim - the pocket won't bulge (although can feel its weight). Love the direct USB connection (can drag drop MP3's or images from my laptop), and the almost instantaneous FM radio station search for all channels (I'm a big time FM radio fan). The blue LED's on two sides that keeps flashing - if u miss a call or have an unread SMS - are quite handy. As for the camera, the picture quality is OK (given that its a mobile phone not a digital camera) but the time it takes between you press 'capture' and it actually takes a snap is bit longer than I'd expect. Compared to my Nokia 6230, the keys are slower to respond, and the speakers are not as loud. Overall though, this is an outstanding phone.

Quite simply this is a brilliant phone, Nokia at their best! Easy to use, does everything most users want, good MP3 and great to look at. Size is useful - nice and thin slips into pockets without bulging. Only minus, a camera flash would have been useful but this does not detract from the phone at all.

A fantastic phone but with 2 major weaknesses The most user friendly phone I've used in a long time. Music player function is excellent. The Calendar application although simple is really good, I can manage with it and I usually use a business/PDA phone. Camera is adequate and quick to start up for those spontaneous pics! Sadly, the phone is let down by a disappointing battery life (I got 1 hrs voice calling after a full charge) and poor voice quality - these are definitely my top priorities, after all its a phone first!

Nokia 6300. Yes, pretty good so far. I upgraded this time because my old nokia didn't have bluetooth and I needed a hands-free kit to protect my driver's licence. I chose it a) because it was recommended, b) because it had the features I need (especially voice recording) and c) because the screen is really clear and sharp. I'm getting a bit long-sighted so I can't be doing with titchy screens or unclear text. It is a very good looking/good feeling phone without being flashy, and seems to work well. The call quality/voice quality could be better, but it's OK. The only serious problem is the battery life. When I got it home, I carefully put it on 14 hour charge before using it, but found the battery life was a dissapointing 2 days on light use. I phoned the guy at Carphone Warehouse and he said it was because I overcharged the battery. He gave me a new battery and told me to never charge it for more than 3 hours. It seems bizarre to me that Nokia have designed a phone/charger that doesn't protect itself from overcharging. I mean he's right, that Lithium Ion batteries don't like being overcharged, so the traditional initial soak charge is not appropriate anymore, but the last two phones I've had have had Lithium ion batteries and I used to leave them permanently plugged into the charger at home - with no ill effect. The man seemed to know what he was talking about, but if so then Nokia have shot themselves in the foot there. I have now bought myself an ordinary plug-in timer which I've set so the charger will power up for jus t two and a half hours a night. That way I should be able to plug it in and forget it. And yes, so far, the battery life seems better. It's been two days off the charger now and still looks two thirds full. I'm a fussy old codger and have unrealistically high standards, but I can recommend this phone. If I find a flip phone that has the right features I might dump this one, but not otherwise.

It might still be the honeymoon period at this stage (as I've only had my phone just over 24 hours), but I *LOVE* this phone. I had spent about 1 week making a detailed search of the phone I wanted. There were several I was interested in, but this phone was the easiest for me to obtain, so I went for it. I was hesitant because reviews I'd seen. People seem to either very much love it or hate it. I had upgraded from a Siemens SF65 for this phone, so I feel like I've finally joined the 21st century! The phone is just PACKED with features. I will not list them all, you can see them. A lot of reviews say "2 mega pixel camera, not good enough", but after having a phone that ,granted, had a flash, (its highest resolution photo was SVGA) I am very happy with photo quality. The highest resolution of this camera is 1600x1200 and it takes some great photos. Yes, the conditions have to be right, but that happens with a lot of digital cameras... Video is great albeit small at 178x144 not the 320x240 as seemed to be promised in spec. It's my first video phone, so I am happy with the quality, it makes a somewhat "blocky" but very watchable video clip. I find the ease of use with bluetooth for file transfer really good and fast. Mp3's, video clips and photos all transfer in seconds. Sound quality is great, and ample in volume. The only downside I have seen with my phone so far is the common complaint - battery life - but as I was playing with the phone to familiarise myself with it yesterday - I doubt this will be a real problem for me in the near future. The only other slight down point is the highly probable ease at which this phone would become disfigured. I would definitely say invest in a good quality case if you want your phone to stay aesthetically good-looking. Other than that, I am 100% happy I went with this phone and am SSOOO glad I went back to Nokia!

It's weired - I read so much about the "very poor" battery life; I don't have any problems with my battery. I can listen from 6:30 in the morning to 6:20 in the evening (my usual working time) and it still lasts for the night and even the next morning, again consistantly listening to music... what's realy annoing to me is the system for contacts: I'ts impossible to add more than one detail (number, e-mail...) to one contact name. Some of my contacts have 4 or more numbers (business, privat...) so I have to waste 4 contact spaces for one person. That's just not thought through well. But besides that I think it's just perfect. Sory for typing mistakes...

I purchased this phone after deliberating between the Sony Ericsson550i & the Nokia6300. I am glad I chose to go with this one as it is brilliant & I would recommend it to anyone. I also have the Sony Ericsson800i which is good but I love this phone much better & it's lighter to use. I also think the music player sounds better than the Sony.

BATTERY LIFE :Picked this tip up from a forum site that might help all of you who say the battery lets this excellent phone down. Buy a BL5 battery, which is slightly thicker than the BL4 that comes with the 6300 and file/sand the plastic down along the top face where the contacts are.( you will see that this is where it is thicker than the BL4) File the face down as close to the contacts as you can without actually fileing the metal contact. You might have to file the bottom of the battery a bit or take a bit of the battery wrapper off but not always. If you was getting 3 days from your original battery between charges this will increase it to about 4.5 days. This will not harm the phone in any way

Great phone. looks great and is very easy to use with well thought out menu. Has lots of functions and a good screen. This phone should become a great seller and put Nokia back on top. Much better than the motorola v3 I had previously. I would reccommend thi sphone to everyone.

Didn't like this phone at all,the buttons were too low at the bottom of the phone. Also have had to send two back as the right side of the function square was depressed and was very difficult to push down any more. Sound quality on calls was pretty average too with crackling in the background even with full signal. Maybe I was just unlucky, but two units with the same prob is more than a coincidence.

Good looking phone. Easy to use. Ringtones not loud enough even on maximum volume. Voice recorder not loud enough on playback. Cannot rename profiles. (Shame) Can't find a leather case which fits without covering some of the fittings / ports. Ear speaker not very clear. (Buzzes)

Great phone. I have always been a Nokia man. Having had a 3330, 7250, 7250i, 6230, 6230i and a few others before right back to the start of Nokia mobiles. They seem to have got better and better over the years. I have always prefered phones not to have too many gadgets. (more to go wrong). In the case of the 6300 they really have got it right. Technical without going over the top. Most importantly it's easy to use, big easy to read screen, vibrant colours and a great little camera. As a business phone it has all you need. Well done Nokia. 1st rate.

absolutly pathetic battery life makes this phone useless for anyone who doesn't make it home every night to put it on charge. My motorola v3 had a better battery life - and that phone is ancient now. Also the phone is more slippery than butter - does not feel comfortable on the side of my face and the screen gets hot after talking for more than 5 minutes Its rubbish - don't let the looks fool you the 100 people who gave this 5 stars no its flaws too but just don't want to admit they bought a turkey

This phone is the best thing Nokia have come up with since....... well the last best thing they came up with. As someone has already said, if you think you are David Bailey then try buying a camera. If you think the battery life is too short why not put the phone on charge when you're asleep - or don't you go to bed? It looks great, the build quality is great, it works great, it doesn't crash morning, noon and night, the battery is no problem at all unless you are an idiot, and its a bargain. So there

I got the 6300 a few days ago and i'm loving it. I've had my eye on it for a while, mainly due to its simplicity and sleek style. Battery life has been good so far and i've been playing with it heaps. I do however have a criticism, when i receive a call the phone will ring on a lower tone but after approximately two rings, it becomes louder. Not sure why it does this.. Has anyone realised the same problem?

Also its cheap too, I think its floating around at £80 payg, exceptional price for such a brilliant small phone.

Being a mobile application developer, I've owned and worked with quite a few phones, but this is easily the best device I've ever owned or worked on. Well priced, slim, good looking, outstanding screen clarity, great screen visibility in sunlight, only the battery life is bit of a downer. All in all, outstanding!
