Nokia 6300 Review

Rating:
Date: 02/06/2007
The Nokia 6300 is one of the most popular and highly-rated Nokia phones for several years. It's an attractive slimline phone with a stainless steel finish, and contains all of the features that most people want from a phone: a high quality camera with video recording capability, a stereo MP3 player, built-in FM radio, wireless Bluetooth connectivity and a slot for a memory card. The camera isn't as good as the cameras in Nokia's high-end smartphones: it's rated at 2 megapixels and doesn't have autofocus, so it won't replace a dedicated digital camera, but is good enough for taking casual pics. One of the main selling points of the 6300 is its user-friendliness: it's as easy to use as the Nokias of old, and it does what most people need without the complications of Nokia's high-end Nseries phones. Its only weakness is battery life, which is to be expected as the size of the phone doesn't allow for a larger battery to be fitted. If you can live with this one flaw, then we recommend the Nokia 6300 to you.

Features of the Nokia 6300 include:

  • Camera:2 megapixels with 8x digital zoom
  • Video Camera: 176 x 144 pixels
  • Display: TFT, 16.7 million colours, 240 x 320 pixels (2 inches)
  • Music Player: MP3, MP4, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, H.263, H.264 formats / FM stereo radio with Visual Radio
  • Ringtones: 64-voice polyphonic ringtones, MP3 ringtones, Video ringtones
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0, USB
  • Memory: 7.8 Mbytes plus microSD card slot (expandable up to 2 Gbytes)
  • Messaging: SMS, MMS, email, Instant messaging, Nokia Xpress audio messaging
  • Internet: WAP, GPRS Class 10, EDGE, XHTML web browser
  • Talk Time: Up to 3.5 hours
  • Standby: Up to350 hours
  • Operating Frequency: GSM Triband 900/1800/1900 MHz
  • Size:106 x 43 x 12 mm
  • Weight: 91g

well, had this 6300 phone for 3 yrs and very good indeed it is too! no complaints apart from would be better if battery last longer, which is why im finally thinking of upgrading, but to a similar model. this, hwever is good quality no nonsense phone, primarily for purpose of phoning people, being reliable and looking reasonably nice! it does these things very well! I think you should review what you said about the 6700 being great and reliable at the end of the 6300 review, in view of the huge numbers of customer complaints about its reliability!

The phone was fantastic until i got over 1,000 msgs (inbox and sent items combined) the phone then proceeded to freeze every 2mins, it seems it cannot handle that many msgs and will never load them so i can delete them. nokia care centre very helpfully flashed the phone, conveniently losing all my contacts and msgs. 3 months later, it does it again! my old ericson had over 3,000 msgs in the inbox and never skipped a beat.

However, although it basically the same phone inside (apart from 3G) with the bonus of a screen that stays lit longer than 10 seconds (my main gripe about the 6233) I hate the keypad. I'm a texter mainly I personally find it really fiddly to text on this phone as the keys are much smaller, more "spongy" and I think more cheap feeling than the 6233 keypad which was larger and just felt far better in quality than this phones one.

I don't like this phone. The keys are small for texting and the bumps on the '5' key are almost too small to feel. After just over a year the keypad began to freeze at odd intervals, and the phone began crashing mid-call. (I don't use my phone that much either.) I also hate the fact that the predictive text memory is so small, i.e. if you enter a word that's not in the phone's dictionary, it will remember it, but it only has room for about six new words before it loses the oldest one. The screen is excellent but everything else drives me nuts. (I only use my mobile for calls and texts, so I'm not commenting on other features.)

Had this phone for two years. First time it kept freezing and got progressively worse until just stopped working and managed to block my sim card. O2 were very good and sent out a replacement although was annoyed at loosing all 98 contacts >.< Nokia also replaced the phone free of charge. Another year later and the same problems are reoccuring. Everytime I text it starts to delete itself, frequently switches itself off and when it does it doesn't come back on again. Music player also frequently loses files or reports "no music files found" Fantastic phone if you want something very basic. My dad has one too and loves his. But for someone who addictively texts, the short battery life is annoying. Calls are clear enough. aluminium back panel is very strong and mine has relatively few scratches despite being dropped by butter fingers here. Other than the problems mentioned I loved this phone and move on purely because I don't find it that stylish and fancy th e new LG cookie. Would give this phone 3.5 for "very good" not quite "excellent" but there's no option for that so I'll round up to a 4.

I was recommended the 6500c by orange as I needed long battery life above all else. No such luck there. And after a couple of months, it started to eat my address book. Luckily, all my contacts were still on the memory of my old phone, so I could do a 'Restore All' and a quick Sim Card switch to get them back again, but without the old phone, I'd have lost over 100 sets of details. Orange say it is a known problem, but there is no software solution.

I have had 3 of these over 18 months for work use and found battery life is very poor as it needs charging at least daily with the battery cover getting quite hot to the touch after a 20_30 minute callm. Another problem is a "Dalek" type audio quality that means you have to cancel the call and re-dial. Upgraded now to a blackberry for work and use a SE W810i for personal use which is miles better.

My review is the opposite of the last few, funny! I find the battery life excellent. It definitely doesn't need charging every day. I charge it every 5 or 6 days. But I don't have very long conversations, so maybe that's it. The camera. Wooo, TERR-I-BLE! All the photographs look green/yellow and over-exposed, and have tonnes of noise on them. They look a bit like those pictures you get from night view cams! It's a very stylish phone (I have the brown version), the buttons are remarkably easy to use (they look small, but you don't tend to accidentally press the wrong one). Navigation button is also excellent. Amazing screen: easy to see in bright sunlight. Wifi also excellent, it connected to my wifi network at home straightaway. Haven't tried anything else, it's my "back up" phone, and now I've got my replacement Sony Ericsson (bl**dy thieves) I'll be returning to that one. Why? Because I can't hear this one ring! And that's rather important when you work freelance ...

But make sure to charge it 8 hours fter you've bought it. Appearance - Very sylish, slim, not too chunky and Big screen, nice buttons. Functions - Great, comes with a 516mb memory card with 5 games, plus 2 more on the phone, and the other functions like the converter, world time unit, calculator, web, e-mails, voice message, vocie recorder and many more make it a great practical phone. Camera - Well not too clear, but if you find the picture quality not so good before you take the picture, switch the night mode on, and the quality improves alot. Video not too clear, but not too bad, the phone overall is very very ideal, I love it!

Well the camera is nothing as compared to the same 2 MP camera present in other nokia models like N70. Results are foggy and have a yellowish tinge (even when the picture is taken in normal mode, no effects added). The biggest flaws are easily scratchable LCD (and body) alongwith pathetically low internal phone memory (not more than a few MB). That renders applications usage so very hard. If you connect it to the internet, it will ask you to delete something from the phone which leaves such a bad taste in the mouth. I wonder how this phone can be given 5 stars. May be the lower price tag is all important.

Ok what I have found over the years is that Mobile Phones tend to look more and more like toys, there seems to be a huge emphasis on applications and various kinds of software. Don't get me wrong, I myself have been a subject to the innovated technology. However the end product looks like something you bought from Fisher Price! So, I know that the Nokia 6300 has been around for quite some time and to be perfectly honest I did not think much of it. However Nokia seems to have answered all my prayers in one hit by bringing the handset out in Jet Black. At first I was a little sceptical, thinking to myself hmmm why is it so cheap on Pay as you go. At this point I had a Sony Ericsson K770i on contract with Vodafone however as many phone enthusiast out there I get very bored of handsets. Never the less since it was inexpensive through Carphone Warehouse (79.99)I thought "there is no harm in giving it a try". End product: Stylish simple Jet Black handset, steel coating which gives the phone some weight to it, very much pleasing to the eye. What I love about this phone is that Nokia seem to have designed this phone not missing one intricate detail for example: Large TFT screen with High Resolution display, perfect size key pad which has a soft touch (NO CRUNCH), on either side of the handset there is a small clear strip (I love this!) if you have a missed call or have an unread text message it lights up Blue every 15 seconds are so, at the same time if you do have either a missed call or text there is a standby screen that illustrates the latter otherwise the stand by screen is Jet Black. I went for the Noir theme, works well with the the Black edition handset. You can also choose how you would like to view the menu, I chose the "Tab" option as it is a little different from the norm, ring tone wise I went chose "Glow" (Very Cool). I am not a big texter however you can send a "Flash Text" Message, which basically means whoever you text, no matter which brand handset, The text illustration will appear on the screen once received, meaning you don't have to open the message to view it! its a cool idea if you just want to send a jokey text, put a smile on someone's face! Battery life is not bad, I would not say its the best compared to Sony however it lasts, I charge my phone every two days. Camera is not the best, 2 Mega Pixel, compare that to the likes of Sony and Samsung, lets just put it this way "no chance". However, this phone is perfect for just doing the basic things, calling and texting! and looks good whilst doing so. It looks fresh, I have had for about 5 months now and I still am amazed at how perfect it is. I am not big on the camera thing or touch screen for that matter. If you want a simple, sexy, stylish handset that does the basics aspects better than anyone else, than I urge you to purchase, for the price is more than affordable and for what you get, its more than worth it. I have not seen anyone with the black edition, check it out!!! Many businesses provide this as a company mobile but in silver and most who have the 6300, have it in silver, the black edition is something else. 5 STARS!!!!

First off, the looks. Gosh, it looks so simple and yet so beautiful with its gloss black and stainless steel finish. Every morning I wake up with a smile when I pick my my phone and start the day. Nice to feel as well. The keys are soft and delicate, but they respond very well. I dont get why people complain about the volume control button. I find it easy to press whichever way I hold it. The screen is absolutely gorgeous with its 2in display and 16M colours. Its also visible under bright sunlight. The menus couldnt be any simpler and straightforward, and I can start an SMS with a press of the shortcut Navi key in an instant! Brilliant! Making calls is a breeze too, and voices on the other end are loud and crispy clear. The loudspeaker does well too, even in windy places with some ambient noise. Incoming calls and SMSes are nice and loud. For some reason I tend to miss calls and SMSes in noisy places, but good thing the blinking blue light notifies me. The vibrating alert could use some more kicking power though. Applications are very quick to open too. music player, camera, etc, will be ready in the blink of an eye! Speaking of music player, the music quality of this phone is superb. People who complain they cant hear it or say the quality sucks are either deaf or listen to songs in noisy places (dumb). Music player is very easy to use with the middle 4-way Navi key to fast forward, rewind, skip, and stop/pause songs. The camera is sort of 50/50. For regular photos like outdoor events, gatherings, family reunions, etc, it is absolutely amazing. I cant tell it apart from my 8MP Olympus digital camera! However, indoors with low/fluorescent lighting and taking close ups, its not really impressive. Pics come out noisy and grainy, and lack of macro/autofocus make close ups blurred. But I almost never need photos of that kind, and for regular photo shooting, this 2MP camera does the job very well. However has complaints about the camera obviously set their expectations too high, since this is a simple all-rounder phone, not camera-focused. As for battery life, here's my records: Hours on standby/ low-average usage such as SMSing per day- approx 10. Days between charges - 4-5. About 40-50 hours, or 2 days IF you on your phone 24 hours a day. My advice: turn it off when you sleep!!!!! you save 8-9 hours of standby time per day! Do I have anything negative to say about this phone? Lets see, the phone lacks 3G, but I dont need it anyway, so it doesnt matter. People complain the video quality sucks. Yes, I know its only some 170 x 140 pixels, but look, if you want to record proper videos, GET A CAMCORDER! And dont forget this is a budget handphone, so you certainly expect it to be superb in every aspect. If you want that kind of phone just go get an N-series and stop complaining. GPRS? The charges for my local telco are unfeasibly high, so I wont waste my money trying it out. Not that I'll need it since I got broadband at home. This is a basic and simple phone for basic and simple users for almost all of us who just want to make calls, send messages, and snap some occasional photos. It may not have a billion functions, but what is important is that it does what its supposed to do. And this phone certainly does it flawlessly. Even with some minor nags, those are things I can live by everyday. Final word - I'd be happy to cling on to this phone till my last breath!

If you are looking for a phone with bluetooth, fm radio, mp3 player and an average 2MP camera, 6300 is the perfect match for you. The only drawback is its poor battery life. But if you're not using your phone frequently during the day (not more than 30 minutes a day), the standby time will be around 2-3 days. This figure is when bluetooth and fm radio is switched off. Bottom line, this is an excellent phone if you are not looking for the top of the notch techology.

Yes this does pick up the scratches and show them probablya little more than plastic does, but to have such a solid feeling phone - where it doesn't feel like you will snap it is great. Nothing compares! It has everything I want. I do not care about the best camera (I have one already), or about an mp3 player - as I have one of those. The whole face lights up, then the key's light goes out followed by the face light. Then the whole face lights up again. This sequence continues until the battery is dead. I upgraded to this phone from a 6230i. It has some obvious benefits: the large and bright screen and the metal casing being the obvious ones. However, the cons are unforgivable - poor battery life and unpleasant ergonomics. The phone is not comfortable in the hand (to wide and thin). The buttons are too small and they don't lie under the thumb; entering numbers or SMS messages involves bending your thumb uncomfortably until you're finished. These sacrifices for thinness and a big screen aren't worth it.

And if you are a business professional wanting to have a business phone then go for the E series. I love my 6300, honestly, it has more than I will ever need. And with preloaded Opera Mini and Yahoo! Go, what more could you ask for? The camera works great in daylight and the music is just about fine. The 6300 reminds me of the good ol' 3310s and 3315s of yesteryear - funtional, popular, and pretty good looking. And pretty much indestructable. I drop my phone almost weekly, and after 8 months of ownership, it's still going strong, unlike my LG which failed completely after 5 months. Definitley reccomend, expecially now it's about half the price it was when it came out, and still is one of the better mid-range phones on the market

Nokia 6300 lost me to Samsung D780 Duoes (Dual-SIM) for the following reasons…!! ?? I’ve used Nokia 6300 for 14months but as there was a requirement to take an additional SIM, I’ve opted for an additional Nokia 6120Classic. As it was disgusting to manage two different sets together, I’ve switched to Samsung D780. Hope my experience can serve as a better review to Nokia 6300 and also a good comparison between them both! It’s an amazing phone. It is so solid, slim strong and easy to use! It has never cared any small shocks and drops, which are pretty common for a hand held phone. Yet there’s a lot of room to develop this model further. The one and only annoying thing with this phone is, there is no running call-timer; which is an essential for international calls from a high tariff zone like Libya. When we come to Samsung D780, it’s a “ONE phone with TWO phone utility”. There’s no doubt it’s a wonder from Samsung and a shame to its rivals, as none of them come forward with a Duoes until a couple of years after Samsung has released a Dual-SIM model. To begin with its plus points: I find it so exciting to keep two digital clocks parallel running on its home-screen (Libya +2GMTS & India +5½GMTS)! ‘My-Menu’ is a new development in Samsung’s interface, much similar to that of the most impressing instant access in Nokia 6300’s ‘Active Standby Mode’ (however, it’s not comfortable in Nokia6300 when the date display goes off while the active standby is on). Samsung’s all new ‘DOOR’ menu transmission effect is tingling! Here we have again the most useful profile ‘Offline’ mode like ‘Flight’ mode in Nokia 6300. Samsung provides a useful ‘SIM card management& #8217; feature to select the activities of your two SIMs in a comfortable way you like. Its dual call logs are good and cozy to organise. Using calculator is easy and comfortable than Nokia. Unlike 6300 there are multiple alarms with snooze options and other futures including daily / weekly repetitions. Above all, its ‘Call Reject List’ in call-logs is a great deal. No more unwanted calls. No hassles of repeated missed-calls or blank-calls! You may also opt to block incoming messages from certain numbers from Menu/Messages/Settings/Text messages/Block numbers. Four different play lists are good but each list is limited to a maximum of 30 tracks. So U can have only 30×4=120 songs? But camera is a wonder; you can have pictures at night with full brightness! Samsung is offering a full security to your personal data at several layers. Apart from phone cock, you can assign password protection for Call logs, Phonebook, Messages, My files, Memory Card, Calendar, Tasks a nd Memos individually. When you look at a list of complaints: the most disgusting thing in it is –its screen goes off in 2 seconds you get connected to your dialed number! You cannot see the running call duration; moreover, there is no way to alter this back-light setting! I use to record my conversations with my mother –simply by assigning voice-recorder to one of the shortcuts of the joystick in my Nokia6300 but in Samsung, I can assign this voice-recorder to a joystick shortcut yet there is no way to record a call –pooooooor! Both the headphone quality and the audio output in it are good but the volume is significantly low. On its loud speaker you can hardly feel your music, if the set is a couple of meters away! As I’m used to the solid Nokia 6300 I feel the body of Samsung comparatively fragile! Its casing is easily prone to scratches, especially the back cover is so delicate –can it last a year? In particular I just wonder why these different mobile makers follow dissimilarity in the keypad functionality. It is just like your computer keyboard, the location and function of a particular key must not differ from brand to brand. For example, writing a text message is largely different between Nokia and Samsung! Comparatively text typing is poor in Samsung, like: its T9 functionality, spelling alternation, selecting back the PREVIOUS spelling alternative. Moreover, there are no winks in its SMS writing! After all, they are the fun of messaging and even the beauty on IMs like Yahoo Messenger™ too! Even adding the sender’s number is involved several keyings… boooooooring! Calendar entries can be still better; there are no different classifications in anniversaries like birthdays. Finally, Nokia 6300 + Duoes (Dual-SIM) + Simbian + a timer display for running-calls + 3.2MP Camera + 4GB internal and a 8GM external memory support + dual clock display with date + active standby + low-price = can be a DREAM PHONE in Nokia 63** series! Let’s wait? Wish Nokia would come up and retain its loyal customers!

This was my first Nokia and I'm a little disappointed. I won't mention the good points as these have been amply discussed but here three bad points: (1) I'm used to carrying my phone in my pocket and not handling it until I need to use it. If I fail to hear it ring in a busy street or fail to feel it vibrate in my jacket pocket, that's it, hard luck. It won't beep or vibrate every few minutes to let me know. It might flash to let me know there's been a call but I can't see it flash in my pocket. (2) The predictive text doesn't remember the last combination of letters I used but reverts to its default. Even as I correct it when selecting letters in a non-standard word, when the next letter is pressed, my corrections are ignored and it goes back to the default. (3) On two attempts at setting up e-mail I failed; there are approximately 45 steps to this and although I followed them carefully I couldn't get it to work. This may have been because O2 themselves weren't sure - on two occasions they got the wrong sub-menu for a particular setting and I had to hunt for it myself. I have spoken to other Nokia users about this and they have said "I don't use predictive text" or "I don't use e-mail". No wonder!

I had one of the earliest versions of this phone back in March 2007. It seemed to work exceptionally well with the odd crashing now and again, especially on calls. By the time I had it for 14 months (on an 18 month contract), it was constantly crashing/freezing/switching itself off, and unable to turn it back on, or if you turn it on, it crashes about 2 mins and switches itself off again. Leaving it for 6-7 hours before finally being able to switch it back on and it would function properly. This phone would definitely have got 5 stars if it didn't plague me with problems towards the end. I never had a problem with Nokias, but this one was an exception.

When u really think about it, this phone doesnt have all the brand new features of today's technology such as: touch screen, 5megapix camera etc... but i have to say it's perfect just the way it is. Its like the EASIEST phone to use. As soon as you buy it, you will find that the buttons are so easy to use and the menu section and everything is in a place where you can easily find it. The size is small and slim>perfect for whatever (pockets, etc..). its not too heavy and not too light, just feels..right. the phone works smoothly with fast response + great quality sound. The screen is like sooo bright and colourful. The camera is pretty good too. We all know that VGA is rubbish, 1.3 isnt that good but the nokia 6300's 2mgp is fine. I like the looks of the phone and it came with a cool case too. There's also a memory card slot if you want some additional memory (needed if you use it as a music player coz the phone has little internal memory). About the battery life...It's alright for me but if you use it alot, you will have to charge it regularly but oh well, that's the only bad thing i can think of. If you're looking for a great looking phone with all the basic features you need thats simple to use, then I'm recommending the Nokia 6300. By far the best phone i've used! but who knows..there might be better phones out there

I bought mine from T-Mobile and just use the Solo tariff because I expect my next company to issue me with a new one so bought this as an interim fill in. I find the 6300 small, clear and precise to use. It has many of the basic phone components that I want and few additional extras; some I may use. I was really after a cell-phone that was basically a phone and not an all singing and dancing PC/video camera/MP3 player; if that makes sense! Battery life is fine, menu system fairly easy to use, as is the PC Suite synchronisation software. The reason I only gave it 4 stars is that I have to remove the back cover to be able to open the bluetooth flimsy plastic cover to plug in the USB cable to connect to my PC. I would also have like to charge the phone using the USB cable whilst the phone is connected to my PC, just like my old Blackberry did; that would save plugging in the charger - I could also charge it up whilst it's in the car. Who knows perhaps Nokia may include this in the future! Both my wife and I have the same 6300 model and she is also delighted with it. Recently she decided to take an unplanned swim whilst crossing a stream in the Lake District; with the 6300 in her pocket! Needless to say that it "drowned" but after a few hours of drying off in the sun (yes there was some!) and a few minutes with her hair dryer the phone worked perfectly. Having a silicone "skin" may have contributed to it not getting too drenched. I had thought about buying the 6500 which is tiny but I have read so many bad press reports I decided to go for the 6300, and I'm glad that I did. If you don't need the latest and greatest but want a decent cell-phone - with a few extras - then you can't go too wrong with the Nokia 6300.

I have read all these reviews before I purchased the Nokia 6300. I always buy Nokia as the most reliable and best designed phone. I was put off by the "poor battery life" comments but have to say our expectations will never be satisfied. Considering the sophisticated and extremely attractive, bright and user friendly display it is a miracle the battery lasts as long as it does! I am a designer and the feel and look of something is as important as its function and I would say this is a fantastic phone. My only frustration (and this is probably common to many phones) is that I can't listen to radio (the news in particular) through the loudspeaker without having to hook up the ear piece/antenna set up. Am wary of bluetooth ear pieces and health risks as listening to music would be prolonged. Other reviews criticised the sound quality but I am a musician also and it sounds fine to me and I have compareed it with my Zen Vision:M mp3 player. This is a real black beauty (o r silver if you prefer) and as another reviewer has said, its a great phone to just fondle. Jez the Bath busker

I've had my 6300 for 8 months now and I'm very happy with it. Very sophisticated looking design but small enough to be slipped in you pocket and forgotten about. The metal casing is a welcome touch. As easy to use as all Nokia mobiles, and the Yahoo Go and Opera web browser are a nice surprise in a phone this small. The best thing though is its reliability (I speak as someone who once had a convoluted wrangle with Carphone Warehouse over a faulty phone). After 8 months it's working fine. Okay the camera could be better, but so what, I've got a digital camera for that. As has been noted elsewhere the battery life isn't as good as other Nokias but mine still averages 4 days with 12 - 14 hours usage a day, and that doesn't stop me from giving it 5 stars..

The flashing lights feature is simoly brilliant. It is easy to see at anytime day or night whethere you've missed a call or sms. The best thing is when putting the phone on silence...the phone doesn't disturb you during the night, but if you happen to wake you cant miss the fact you have missed a call or sms. I just wish the memory storage on the phone was bigger to sore more personal sms's. Because of the intermnal memoery being so small, I am looking to change my phone. Beleive it or not...I cant lkive without the lashing lights feature as it is just so handy...but I cant find another phone with them. I wish Nokia would add this feature to ALL their phones. So my dilemma now is...do I buy another Nokia....if they had the flashing lights feature the answer would have been an immediate yes? Nokia you've missed a great selling point on your other phones. The phone itself looks very stylish and feels good to handle. Keys for texting are good but moving too and from predictive text is a bit of a fiddle. Keen to test it's music capabilities, I downloaded a couple of mp3's but couldn't find where they had been stored. Eventually, I found a command to "update media files" and this seemed to organise the tracks into the musicplayer. I've now had the phone threeweeks and my only real moanis the battery life. All the adverts say 14.5 on standby, but I'm having to charge mine every three days. I don't have blue tooth switchedon, and neither do I use the screensaver, so it's a bit of a downer. Other than that, I'm quite pleased, especially as the price has now come down to under £80.

Its not me either its the phone and ive updated the firmware and its unfixed. Also ive tried only "spelling" when its got spell? not just spell. It just overwrites them eventually and its not like ive saved a lot of words. Its a shame they dont fix this as its hard to recommend a phone with such a huge flaw. Also the battery is not very good, but id put up with that but the shoddy predictive text means I wont buy another nokia because everyone seems to accept this issue or doesnt care. Then again most people are more obsessed with how it looks than how it actually works! :)

Great for those who simply want a device for telephony and texting that is very well built. Just a word of warning for o2 PAYG customers. The pre-installed Opera Mini browser and Yahoo Go applications on the phone will not work with the o2 network as they ridiculously restrict the GPRS settings for PAYG customers meaning you can't view all web sites. Why is a mystery.

The phone is brilliant in all respects except two. 1. The charging socket is easily damaged and I spend ages tweaking the plug to get charging started. This is the second 6300 I've had with this problem. It would be so much better if the phone would charge from the USB socket too. 2. My wife has the same phone and hers keeps cutting out in the middle of calls.

It's a nokia so I'm used to it after 10+ years of their phones Con's 1. Battery life is poor, this can be improved by hacking a higher capacity BL-5C into it (don't worry it doesn't hurt) 2. Calendar functionality has been messed up, can no longer cope with recurring appointments properly when synching with outlook and they aren't interested in fixing it. 3. Sometimes corrupts text messages 4. Sometimes freezes

Nice looking phone and easy to use, BUT: 1. Rubbish battery: requires daily charging 2. Freezes/automatically powers down and re-powers up but buttons don't work! This happens at random and requires a switch off/switch on again. Sometimes you have to do this a few times for it to work. I brought it back TWICE to get it fixed by Vodafone engineers and it was returned working "To manufacturers specifications" but the problem remains. I think it is a filing problem with the Nokia software, as I have almost 2000 SMS messages stored on my phone and when I delete some, the problem happens less often. Also a friend with a Nokia 6234 has the same problem (and he keeps loads of SMS messages too!) Conclusion: If you like storing your SMS messages AVOID this phone, because it will break your heart!

Within a few weeks it crashed. Would not turn on. Pressing the on button resulted in the phone vibrating for a few seconds, followed by the Nokia logo displayed on the screen, followed by the screen flashing white three times, followed by turning back off again. No end of removing batteries, sims, memory cards, charging etc. resolved it. Took it back and got a replacement 6300 and now here I am today (1st June 2008), three months later with my daughter telling me this one's done exactly the same again. I'm hoping Tesco will give me a refund or exchange for a different model. I would not buy one again. This is the worst model of Nokia I have any experience of. It is an average phone because: 1. The predictive text saving is completely and utterly bugged. It does not save your word unless you get the ? mark up. It has such as small memory (no way to extend the dictionary memory) that you frequently cant get words you use on and end up writing in things like "couldnt" a hundred times. I realise most people cant be using predictive since there all happy but its awful if you do, absolutely awful because it frustrates with not saving words and its not me, its the phone Ive seen forum posts about this issue. 2. The battery life is rubbish due to the slimness apparently (smaller battery) My old w810i lasted 14 days once and lasted 8 hours during a traffic jam and in the 2 years i owned it it never once turned off. So far this phone has turned off about 5 or 6 times. Its an average to poor battery. I was just expecting a 7 days plus charge but its more like every couple of days. Poor for todays phones compared to SE. It is fine apart from these two issues, but for me the predictive text aspect is a complete joke.

Disappointed is the best way to describe my feelings about this 'phone. Having been a long term PAYT customer I eventually decided to go on contract. I chose the 6300 not just for looks and quality but also on the favourable reviews I read on this and other sites. Having used it for 6 months I am now in a position to offer my opinion. I don't regard myself as a heavy user, 20 - 30 texts and 30 minutes talk time a day at maximum seems fairly moderate to me. I realise the display guzzles power in huge quantities but I expected considerably better than the 15 - 25 hours use I get from mine, and that's even turning it off at night! To be honest, disappointed is an understatement. I thought the concept of a cell 'phone was to be toally mobile with it, not to have it plugged in at home or my desk? Nice looking 'phone, great features and lots of 'bells and whistles', but comes with a 'you're having a laugh' battery life! I'm now looking at the forthcoming 2600. Cheap and cheerful but hopefully a 'phone thats use lasts considerably longer than this one.

The original review (see above) refers to a 'beautiful stainless steel finish'. Unfortunately for me however the top third of the caseback is not stainless steel but black plastic. I carry my phone in my trouser pockets and I had this phone for 5 months until the black plastic case at the back cracked. This caused the screen to malfunction and the phone became unusable. Before it broke, I used the phone for phoning, texting and internet, I like the Nokia system set up and don't have any problems with the phone operation. The camera is slow (long lag between pressing shutter and picture taking) which makes it impossible to take pictures of kids/action shots etc. But maybe this is also the case with other phones (I don't use camera phones and as I usually use a Canon digital SLR perhaps I expect too much). Overall I would say the phone is very good, but as in my case its lack of robustness is demonstrable, be sure to take good care of it and/or buy a case.

I was a user of both n95 and n80, and I never thought of going back to a non N-series nokia model given the N-series great functionality and designs. Guess what? Nokia's 6300 proves me wrong. This phone is for those who don't want to beat around the bush looking for a nice straightforward phone for everyday usage (that means reliability, feel and style). The features are plentiful enough for a phone in this class, the reception and calls are reliable and clear, and the part where I love the most: it's build quality is exceptional. I have the one in all-black, and I can tell you, it's awesome. Those who said that they can't help touching the phone all the time, I'm having the same problem (although I've have it for a month already) and I still don't grow tired of the minimalistic design. It is one of those rare phones that invoke that exciting feeling when you get your first feel of it. I just have to make an extended note that I especially like the way Nokia made the casing with steel because firstly, it gives a very classy feeling and durability, and secondly, it gives it a weight that feels just right. My N95 was a big phone, but it felt too light for my liking and the plastics gives it a cheap-feeling. But don't get me wrong, I know there is a need for compensation when you have such a phone with so many great features. They just belong in 2 different classes. One gripe I have about 6300 will have to be it's platform. Maybe I was spoilt by N-series phones, but scrolling from icons to icons in the menu feels quite slow. I don't really like the active stand-by (I have always been using it on other phones) because of the laggyness in scrolling. I feel that some of the menu organisations can be improved, but that may just be personal preference. The upside is, loading times when you open folders and settings are fast. The camera is just decent, so don't expect too much from it. It does what it is supposed it and not much else. Not many phones can have such a short list of cons from me, so I give Nokia much credit for 6300. Those who are looking into phones from this class, you should seriously consider this amongst your choices.

Using adapter; costing almost nothing on ebay top quality standard headphones can be uesd. Only minuses are camera i only average but fine for casual snaps to be shown on phone screen & battery life average. On;y lasted a day with me using all features & playing with menus, MP3 etc. I would suggest a life of 3 days under normal light texting/calls. To me I would say this about normal for this sort of phone. I bought the Nokia 6300 back in September after I was very clumsy and dropped my beloved Samsung into my tea. I went for the slim design, and had seen some ok reviews. After 3 months, the phone completely crashed, after being sent off for repair, Nokia exchanged it for a brand new model. Another 5 months after that, the phone developed a software problem. Originally anything put into the headphone or charger port would restart the phone, and a couple of days later it would just restart and turn off as it pleased, resulting in me missing lectures, and a placement. Wouldn't reccommend it for people who like a phone that lasts longer then 5 months. I'm now in a battle with Nokia to get a replacement phone that isn't Nokia, and so far I'm not impressed with their customer service.

I have had this phone from since it came to the German market. By and large it is a good phone. However there is one major flaw! When using it with a bluetooth headset the other person, whom you are calling sometimes hears your speech VERY interupted, so that a meaningful conversation is not possible. This becomes regular and unusable when the other phone is also a Nokia 6300. So if you plan to use your phone with the BT headset, don't. For us this was very important and therefore the rating is low. Unfortunately, NOKIA do not acknowledge this problem.

Another problem was listening to music. The hole the headphones plugged into did not work and i tried many other peoples and deducted it was another error wit the phone.... The phone now freezes constantly i have to turn it off and on again. More recently it has been saying i have no signal even when i am in an area where i should. This was not a network problem as no one else had this problem but me. It fixed itself when i reset the phone, before going back to no signal. After doing this for a few days, the phone jusat stopped registering my sim card and indicated it was not present when it was. All these errors as i far as i have read are not common and if it wasnt for these MANY errors, this phone was great! i actually almost fell in love with it for the first 6 months i had it (appart from the headfones not working but that wasn a big issue) and it was all round a great phone with many features and everyhting ran smoothely. i must be the only person complaining about this phone because it WAS a seriously good phone, probably my best ever.... my mother has the same phone and it has worked briiliantly for her! Also it was and is the best priced phone here in Australia! comparitivly, it is in the same price range as some VGA camera phones when it could be sold for so much more.... basically, great fone, just not mine! Generally a very good phone. The design is sleak and slim. The metal casing giving it a solid feel and the buttons have a quality feel to them too. It's a simple to use phone with all the basic functions that you need. The screen quality is excellent and it can still be seen in bright sunlight. The are only a couple of things on the phone that I dont like. The camera is quite grainy especially on night mode and the text message setup isn't very user friendly. Unlike some other phones where they scroll by a line or page at a time, the nokia scrolls so that the message fills the screen. This means that for each message the text scrolls by a different amount. It makes reading longer texts very annoying as you lose the line which you last read causing you to re-read several lines or miss parts of the message. To get around this I tried using the small text option but the text is much too small to read comfortably (and I have good eye sight). Generally I rate this phone very highly, and it is great for people who don't want to pay a premium for features such as 3G, that in my case are rarely used.

Nokia...'Never Again’. after a long history with several Nokia fones I recently decided to upgrade to the 6300,what a mistake, this has to be the WORST fone I have ever had. Where to start?? Let’s leave the battery issue alone, we all know that one. Sending text message is now a long winded exercise, several clicks before you can select the recipient not like before, and try to get the details of a received text...before you just scrolled down the message to find this. now its click,click,click.....Have you tried the 'Send to many’ options in messaging, like to know who has figured this out...Ring a number that’s engaged...you gotta quickly move the fone around to view the screen to see the error message, no engaged tone....Network strength indicator, please supply magnifying glass to see this...'Voice activation' unless you can speak like Stephen Hawking don’t expect this to work. I could go on forever, however after 3 weeks of frustration I returned this fone for refund on the basis that it was not fit for its purpose, went on net and bought 2nd hand 6230i in very good nick. Happy Again!!! Hope this dissuades any potential buyer(s) and maybe Nokia will wake up and get with it again....

First time it went faulty, it completely died after 3 months, as it was un-repairable, I was given a new one. However, now this "new" model decides as and when it wants to turn it's self off and die on me. (Leaving me with no alarm and missing a lecture). I take care of phones, so it has no mechanical reason to go faulty on me. Maybe I'm just an unlucky mobile phone owner this time around. I've had this phone for 8 months and I absolutely love it!! Unlike most phones it actually lives up to the description. The advantages would be the appearance as it looks great, and it feels good too, being so easy to use, good camera, good for new software and programs, attractive display themes, loads of funky camera effects and night-vision, flexible settings, great organisation features (such as calendar, to-do list, stopwatch, countdown timer scientific calculator, notes, and much more). The texting aspect is really good as I can text easily and don't have to worry about memory storage. The music player is excellent, but the disadvantages I would say is not being able to edit details on the library such as the name, genre, etc just to make it easier to find songs when you want them. Other disadvantages include the camera which, although being good quality, it takes alot of time to save the photo. The video player isn't very good, being jerky and unclear at time s. The lack of infrared isn't noticeable with the bluetooth feature, so it doesn't really affect the phone's performance. And most importantly, the low battery life is very annoying. I did buy an external memory card as the 128mb one wasn't really adequate. Generally the phone is brilliant value for money, ideal for most people and wonderfully easy to use. I could say that it is easily one of the best phones on the market with confidence. I hope this helps you to make the right decision.

fantastic phone!!! You get all those features for the money...excellent value The reason i give it 5 stars is because im an average texter and caller and i get at least 3 days off one battery charge unlike the day an half the reviewers got out of it. first of all it only lasted a day and a half but i think you need to train the battery...i.e. charge and run it down totally before you charge it again...only charge it when its run out. ive now got it to last 3 days on one charge...sounds silly training the battery but it actually worked! enjoy the phone!!!

Stylish and simple, easy to get the hang of and a pretty good phone in general. Love the fact you can rearrange the main menu to suit you, makes it so much easier to use. Camera, though only a 2 megapixel, seems good but probably helps that the screen is so amazing. Only problem with the screen is it's quite bright so hurts my eyes after a while sometimes. Memory isn't that good but most items store to the memory card so that solves the problem. Was quite impressed with the volume, didn't expect it to be as loud as it was. Didnt like the appearance at first but got used to it and now love it. Battery seems to be lasting longer than I expected but I have sleep mode and power saver on and don't use it all the time anyway. In general really pleased with it, alot better than I expected.

I may not be a typical user ... this is my second phone, after keeping an ancient Siemens A50 for the whole of five years. So I am truly impressed by the technological advance :-)! After a month of use I find that: 1) battery life is not as bad as some people claim, especially after cycling the battery a couple of times from full to empty it now lasts for three days of moderate use (including approx. a hour of screen reading per day - see below). 2) I knew about the e-mail and web clients (that´s why I chose this phone) but I am pleasantly surprised that I found on the Net even a PDF reader and an e-book reader for this phone - I use it a lot when commuting! 3) Contrary to what Nokia recommends, it does work perfectly even with other mini-USB cables, e.g. from an Olympus camera or from an external hard drive. 4) The camera is just enough for taking party pictures to embarass people afterwards - fine for me :-) 5) The only minnor annoyance is that the USB cover cannot be opened without taking off the back cover - but that is indeed a minor one.

A replacement phone would have a lot to live up to. Thankfully, the 6300 doesn't disappoint. Its a simple, no nonsense phone thats easy to use, ergonomic, and ain't bad to look at either. The battery life is an issue, lasting two days at most. However, this incovenience is more than offset by the simple usability of the phone. If you want a quality phone, don't be decieved by the low price at the moment, i've had this phone 3 months and it's faultless, just perfect! It's smart, and very tactile with it's cool stainless steel cosmetics, which do not attract scratches as much as you would imagine, any minor marks can be erased with a little metal polish anyway! just like new! screen is bright and tough, with good clarity, tones are loud and clear, but there's also no chance of missing a call or sms/text as neon blue lights flash to alert you of these functions.. very useful if you need a phone on silent at work, as silent is without all tones and vibes, but the flashing side bar lets you know you are in demand and someone is contacting you. The keypad lights also in the same blue shade. The camera is all you would expect on a phone, if not more.. battery lasts pretty well too. the menu's are easy to follow, and use. all in all a superb phone, and one i will keep til it dies, as it's compact and has all the features you could ask for in a phone.. prospective buyers should note that this is a phone, not an IPOD or Camera, and accept it for it's purpose.. if you want a reliable handset, i fully recommend this phone. Unisex, so would suit anyone, regardless..

This is a great phone but unfortunately the bluetooth connection can be dreadful. I use it a lot in the car and although I can hear people fine via my TomTom 910 the people receiving my call often find the connection stuttering and crackerly. I thought at first it was the TomTom but have since found the same on a Motorola earpiece. I upgraded the software on the phone to version 5.5 via the Nokia site but this has not stopped the problem so I have no choice but to change my phone to a different model. So rating is only 2 out of 5 from me because nearly all my talking si done via a bluetooth connection. Otherwise it would be 4 out of 5.

MP3 player is good - not that I use it often. I have been a loyal Samsung lady for many years but I have finally gone back to Nokia and im fairly pleased. Being a woman, nothing is ever good enough!! I thought I was getting tired of Nokia and having only ever had Nokia's went over to Motorola a year ago. That made me realise how good Nokia phones are. I tried a N65 but really just need a phone with an OK camera. The 6300 is fantastic - easy to use, functional, adequate camera, clear display and (thankfully) very good battery life. And it looks good. The only slight pain is that the charger plug is a different size so the hundred or so Nokia chargers I have all over the place are finally redundant!

This looked like a great phone when it came out but it was a bit pricey. Now it can be bought for £59.99 on 02-uk when bought with £10 credit. The phone is easy to use and the battery life is good for a phone of this size with so many features. The 2 megapixel camera is good enough to not look like an old fashioned phone camera, and not good enough to take away the need for a digital camera, exactly what is needed from a phone. The screen is clear and the phone has features similar to those of expenisive N series nokias.

I've been lured a couple of times by Motorola and Samsung phones, with their posh cameras and all that, but I've always gone back to Nokia. I want a phone to do what I want it to, when I want it to, and Nokia phones are the only ones that come close to that ideal. I had a Nokia 8800 Sirocco and was loath to part with it, but I was just getting bored with it. I thought I'd give the 6300 a try, after all the positive reviews on here. Not as expensive or exclusive, perhaps, as the Sirocco but wow! It's a lovely phone, with excellent build quality, and like all Nokias, so easy to use. Very highly recommended.

I had a nokia 6230 before and i didnt think that could be beaten and this phone came very close to it. The problem is although the camera is 2megapixel it is very poor indoors in artificial light. You can either take a pic that is dark and grainy, or switch the nightmode on and take a blurred pic. Adjusting the white effects mode helps but not enough. This is so dissapointing as even my old 6230 produces better indoor pics and that wasn't even 1MP! Additionally the voice dialling appears 2 be a joke that is only functional if u sound like a robot, you cannot customise contacts with your own voice! Nevertheless this is an excellent sleek phone that is impressive an no nonsense in every other department. If you dont want to take pics you'll love it.

Got this for not having to use my Windows Mobile brick supplied by my boss (private calls not included). Since I was used to various Nokia's over the years based on reviews I got the 6300 (instead of the 6230i which I had before and was another option with the same subscription). No regrets so far... the new interface is great, nicer and simpler than the one on the 6230i. The phone is slimmer and lighter. The sound is clear and I like the way the keyboard feels, the keys are the right size for my midsize hands. I also do like the fact that syncing is easy with a standard cable that comes with every digital camera. In my case I had a car-charger of my previous phone which doesn't work as they've changed the charger (and the headphone too by the way), no problem as a AC-charger is supplied with the phone. If there's one thing to note that would be that the combination of a thin body that's made of stainless steel looks and feels great but might escape your hands if you're in a hurry. A second one would be the battery life as mentioned by other people, could be better.

Nothing about this phone makes up for the shocking battery life. There is no way this has 350 hrs standby time. I'm a pay-as-you-go customer and don't use my phone for calls much and not even on a daily basis nor do i use it to play music on. I DID charge before using the first time (though i had to look on the internet to find out how long to charge it for because the instruction manual didn't bother to say) and it barely lasted 4 days. The second time it went dead on me in 3 and a half days and that time i hadn't even used it as much and certainly hadn't taken any pics like I did on the first charge. What happpened? It never returned to life, not even after being left on charge overnight. On top of that it doesn't synch with AppleMacs without your going through a massive rigmarole of downloads and fixes and the tightwads at nokia can't even be bothered to bung in a USB lead when you buy. I took it back and got a sony 810 - a slightly chunkier phone with at least twice the battery life, synchable with a Mac and a far superior camera.

This phone is legendary. In addition to all the good reviews I have a couple of other things to add which are not typical reviews of a phone. Firstly, I accidentally left this phone in a jacket pocket that I put in the washing machine. I couldn’t believe it but it still works after that (standard 40 degress C), Secondly and this is just unbelievable but trust me it is true. To cut a long story short one of my so called friends played a practical joke on me one night and put my phone under the back wheels of my car - I backed over it with out knowing and it still works! If that doesn`t prove it to be the best phone in the world then I dont know what does. It may not be the latest model anymore but for durability and strength I recommended it. I seriously think it could be destructible, but it probably isn’t water proof so don’t try it, but the rest is true. 10 out of 5 stars!

Just bought a 6300 after a year with a clunky Nokia 5500 with loose keypad. The 6300 is such an improvement. It's slim and light, but still feels substantial and well built. I really like the non-smart interface and how easy it is to set preferences. There are also a number of useful features such as screensavers and games on the Nokia supplied 128mb MicroSD card. The keypad feels sturdy and is easy to use for texting. Reception and call quality are excellent too. Overall a very good phone, and I'm glad Nokia is once again providing the option of a well made, easy to use phone as an alternative to the recent gadget laden smart phones.

The phone looks great. The very weak battery life (less than one day), makes it very unreliable. It is impossible to give it any credit with such a poor battery. Nokia must fund a solution. Making a slim phone is not an excuse for offering a phone that could not be used as a reliable mobile. If you are a business man or even a moderate phone user, choosing this phone will put you in bad events, with an empty battery charge phone in your hands.

I had this phone for about two months. Although this is a very good looking easy to use set, I didn't quite like it, but I won't rate it so badly because it is just my taste. One big flaw of this phone is its poor battery life. Sometimes, I felt that the functionalities were given for the sake of it's name only because the battery doesn't support these functions to be used (for eg. music player). Many times I had run out of battery while I was outside. If you receive and make few calls, that is it, the cell will start running out quickly. The second thing I didn't like about this is its unbalanced weight. The weight is too much for such a small phone. I was never comfortable with it without a cover and it popped out of my hands couple of times too. If you are an advanced user, this is not that kind of a phone. It's a very simple easy to use phone and will fit perfectly for ladies and new cell phone users. I was amazed by the ratings received for this phone as normally NOKIA phones are not rated highly (If you read the reviews for other phones). 98% of users have rated it very highly. I will give it 3 stars only just because I couldn't like it well and I am planning to buy NOKIA N73 though it's a little buggy.

Bought this as my other phone 6288 broke dowm 6 times and needed a phone as am about to start a legal case with Nokia and T Mobile about the 6288. It's alright. Feels very old school though. One feature I don't like is when you receive a text which is longer than one text, it comes through in separate messages, not just one long message. Haven't had a phone that's done that for years. Texting makes my hands ache as this phone is far too small. And I don't particularly like the font size. Small is too small, normal is too big. The phone book especially looks too big and too spaced out. Also I hate the way they have altered the standard text alert - what's with the harmonisation Nokia?? Stick to what you know best! Have yet to try the camera but sound quality on calls is loud and clear. Looks alright but am waiting for Nokia to get themselves in gear and release a good working slide phone under the £120 mark.

Some depaint, some break, but everyone of 'em ended up flimpsy, after a few days of normal use, starting to make "low quality-like" noises every time you hold 'em in your hand. Think about the noises of an old bed. Got it? Battery, I think, can be upgraded, but it's metal case... not. Mmmmh... or maybe Titanium?

Style over Substance. I have Had this phone for exactly a week, previously having an older Nokia and a Motorola. Nokia is my phone of choice. The phone looks great. Its no i-phone of course but then its a good solid phone too. Or is it? Firstly it feels ok, weight fine. Reasonably intuitive operation for most operations within a minute or two of playing. The sound is clear. Screen is very nice. So its a good phone. But its not outstanding as the reviews above would claim. Here are some issues, varying from small to fairly major. 1. Battery life is below average in simple standby (resting on table). Perhaps its the bluetooth? 2. Volume control on side is awkward for larger fingers. 3. Camera is AWFUL in low light. I mean AWFUL. 4. The biggest button on a phone should get me into my names of people to call. Here it takes me to a menu, the first item of which is SMS. Yes I can press the down below the big button but this is awkward again. 5. Dialing buttons are too small 6. My phone got into a state where it believed headphones were plugged in. They were not. There is no menu option to overcome this. I had to find headphones - plug in and unplug to reset the phone. Thats just dumb. 7. The phone is not ergonomic - dialing with your thumb is hard work. The problem is that the keys are bunched close at the bottom so holding the phone and diallling with one hand requires holding the phone very low down and even then isnt comfortable. 8. No infrared! Sure it has bluetooth. Unfortunately my laptop does not. Sigh. 9. The phone can become very hot in long conversations. I found it quite painful once to have close to my ear. In summary I think a lot has been sacrificed here to make the phone elegant, the right form factor and weight and cost. Theres no doubt phones have become fashion items and here the 6300 wins out massively. If what you want is a phone that looks good on the table - this is one of them. However, squeezin in that screen , forcing a tiny area for the keypad reduces the whole ergonomic feel of the phone. Add to this awkward volume key and poor priorities on selection keys and you have a phone that begins to annoy people who dont care so much about style as function. I could let all this slide except that the style over substance continues from there. Lack of infrared is unforgiveable in a phone that wants to be an all-in-one device. The battery life in idle mode is poor too. In all...I suspect higher votes come from style lovers, but I'd advise others to be more than cautious about this glittering phone. Oh yeah and if you buy this as a fashion item, it does kind of scream - I wanted an i-phone.

This phone is getting some good reviews; I have had the phone for a week so here are some points on my finndings which should balance the discussion! Bluetooth connectivity is poor, for some reason, it will connect to the system in my car but it is hard to hear what I am saying! It works fine with a range of other phones. The loudspeaker volume is poor and the sound quality while playing music is terrible; it reminds me of one of those £5 walkmans you used to get. Connectivity is also suspect, as I have had problems on routes where I have never had a problem before. There are two things that you need to know during a call, how good the signal and how much battery left. Both of these crucial bits of info are not visible during a call as the callers name is displayed in bold and the background bleaches out. So you all recon this a good phone huh? Makes you wonder what you had before! There are better phones on the market, but since the 6310 they are no longer made by Nokia.

This is the first Nokia I've owned for years having had a string of Sony Ericssons since my old 7210, but the phone felt familiar straight off. Despite loving that handset, I switched to SE because Nokia had a period of releasing weird looking phones. The 6300 is a real return to form. Very simple and understatedly stylish, the design and the aluminium casing just ooze quality. Despite having been used to the SE menus, it took no time at all to familiarise myself with the Nokia's menu system, it really is very intuative. Call quality is excellent, the camera is perfectly adequate for a phone cam and the inclusion of Opera Mini as a browser (it's what I've used on mobiles in the past) is great. Some people have commented on battery life. Well I use mine for on average a couple of short calls and half a dozen texts daily plus an hour listening to music. I top up the battery every second night which I don't think is bad for a handset running a 2 gig memory card on top of its standard functions. I'm very happy with the phone, but there are a few downsides that would stop me giving it 5 stars, mostly connected to the media functionality. Firstly, as many have mentioned, the memory card that the phone is packaged with is inadequate if you want to store a half decent selection of music on it, so you'll have to buy another one seperately, but at least it supports 2 gig memory cards. Just a shame they didn't include one. Secondly, the supplied headphones are abysmal, particularly compared to the ones that my last W800 came with. Really cheap old 80s style plastic earpieces, possibly adequate for taking voice calls on, but no use whatsoever for listening to music. Bizarely, according to their website, these are the best earphones Nokia supply. And you'll need to buy an adaptor to use ordinary earphones with it as the headphone jack is smaller than the ordinary 2.5mm size. Thirdly, while the music loading software is miles easier to use and more reliable than Sony's version (arrrgh!), albums ripped directly from CD are fine, but all of the music that I've transferred from my computer library or MP3 player the phone has helpfully rearranged into alphabetical order by track name with no option to re-sort. Very annoying when your favourite album plays in completely the wrong order, absolute carnage when it's a premixed dance album. And odd when Nokia's own PC music manager can read the track numbers. Finally (phew) my W800 allowed you to use the volume button to skip through tracks or adjust the volume whilst listening to music while keeping the rest of the keys locked. On the Nokia you have to unlock the keypad and then go through the menus to the music manager to do this, which is a little unnecessary. All minor niggles, but real all the same. Overall, a very good sophisticated phone with lots of functionality but still a few things that Nokia could learn from Sony Ericsson about music players.

Phone is brilliant. Simply brilliant. Rock solid in every way. The charger socket is a bit weak though, it pulled out of the phone's body when I pulled the charger out at an angle accidentally. It then snapped after a while because there was too much play back and forth. It's now going in for repairs. Nokia should make their charger sockets abit stronger, not just a little brittle plastic bobby that slides out if tugged on.

Had to replace my excellent 6230i recently &, after a nightmare fortnight with a 6120 on 3 network, (the network, not the phone!)I opted for the 6300 on Virgin. Excellent phone. To use a car analogy, I would liken the 6300 to a Lexus - not the flashiest car in the car park, but ultra reliable, full of kit & on closer inspection extremely well built. It's a phone you could answer at a celebrity film premiere & it would look the part. If you want bling, buy a slide/flip/swivel/pink phone. If you want reliable, understated class, the 6300 is the one for you.

What a difference! Nokia doing what they do best ... in the past year I've had an N95, N80, N70 and hated each one in turn for a whole variety of reasons not least of which was reliability. I bought the 6300 at launch and I have to say I love it! it proves the age old adage that less is more ... the phone looks great, it is easy to operate and has the most outstanding features I've ever had on a phone. Music, photos and texts in a simple and easy to use format. Highly recommend it, and did I mention ... it looks GREAT!

I think others have covered virtually everything about this phone and it is a great phone BUT the earphones are shocking and I mean really bad!! If they had fitted a 3.5mm socket then it would be fine but the 2.5mm socket is a pain. How they can supply such a good phone with really bad earphones is madness!!!

But I was wait best synchronisation feauters :-( When I synchronise my Outlook contacts with it, I can select just one folder to synchronise :-( I have some folders in use: MyPersonal Contacts & Business Contacts... The Batery may be too good. If you look for advanced business feauters you should search for something else. From me 3 stars!
