Nokia 6300 Review

Rating:
Date: 02/06/2007
The Nokia 6300 is one of the most popular and highly-rated Nokia phones for several years. It's an attractive slimline phone with a stainless steel finish, and contains all of the features that most people want from a phone: a high quality camera with video recording capability, a stereo MP3 player, built-in FM radio, wireless Bluetooth connectivity and a slot for a memory card. The camera isn't as good as the cameras in Nokia's high-end smartphones: it's rated at 2 megapixels and doesn't have autofocus, so it won't replace a dedicated digital camera, but is good enough for taking casual pics. One of the main selling points of the 6300 is its user-friendliness: it's as easy to use as the Nokias of old, and it does what most people need without the complications of Nokia's high-end Nseries phones. Its only weakness is battery life, which is to be expected as the size of the phone doesn't allow for a larger battery to be fitted. If you can live with this one flaw, then we recommend the Nokia 6300 to you.

Features of the Nokia 6300 include:

  • Camera:2 megapixels with 8x digital zoom
  • Video Camera: 176 x 144 pixels
  • Display: TFT, 16.7 million colours, 240 x 320 pixels (2 inches)
  • Music Player: MP3, MP4, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, H.263, H.264 formats / FM stereo radio with Visual Radio
  • Ringtones: 64-voice polyphonic ringtones, MP3 ringtones, Video ringtones
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0, USB
  • Memory: 7.8 Mbytes plus microSD card slot (expandable up to 2 Gbytes)
  • Messaging: SMS, MMS, email, Instant messaging, Nokia Xpress audio messaging
  • Internet: WAP, GPRS Class 10, EDGE, XHTML web browser
  • Talk Time: Up to 3.5 hours
  • Standby: Up to350 hours
  • Operating Frequency: GSM Triband 900/1800/1900 MHz
  • Size:106 x 43 x 12 mm
  • Weight: 91g

Good Nokia phone, very much how they used to make them...6230 was one of the best mobiles, and this is a good update of that. So simple to use, great little functions, everything where u want it, shortcut keys, fast user interface, its a great pleasure to use since I'm used to slow smartphones - 6600, 6630, N80, N73 etc. If only the battery was as good though, it would be my fone for good, and a flash for the camera wud be good too, but its no biggy, i hardly use nemore nowadays. So all in all, a great simple, reliable phone to use, just let down by battery life...hence 3-4 stars.

I bought this phone based on the recommendation on this site, it was a mistake! the voice quality is an embarrasement, my old Nokia 1100 worked superbly. The multi-media clips stopped working after 2 months. The headphone plug has its own mind about working hours. The keypad is designed for tiny fingers. The camera is Ok, the mp3 voice quality is good. I wouldn't recommend it.

It is an average phone because: 1. The predictive text saving is completely and utterly bugged. It does not save your word unless you get the ? mark up. It has such as small memory (no way to extend the dictionary memory) that you frequently cant get words you use on and end up writing in things like "couldnt" a hundred times. I realise most people cant be using predictive since there all happy but its awful if you do, absolutely awful because it frustrates with not saving words and its not me, its the phone Ive seen forum posts about this issue. 2. The battery life is rubbish due to the slimness apparently (smaller battery) My old w810i lasted 14 days once and lasted 8 hours during a traffic jam and in the 2 years i owned it it never once turned off. So far this phone has turned off about 5 or 6 times. Its an average to poor battery. I was just expecting a 7 days plus charge but its more like every couple of days. Poor for todays phones compared to SE. It is fine apart from these two issues, but for me the predictive text aspect is a complete joke.

What are Nokia playing at? This is the replacements for the 6230i. The new business phone! The good points are it is a stylish modern handset and easy to use. The bad news is it doesn't work properly if you want to call people that is.Sound quality is poor as is the battery life and as for using it on a bluetooth headset forget it( I tried various headsets and car kits).I use my phone all the time for business and most of the time on handsfree and this phone is the worst phone I have ever had.If you want a good handset the Nokia E51 is a far superior phone lucky for nokia as the 6300 nearly lost them a loyal nokia customer.

I had one of these phones. Loved the look and feel of the phone. After a few years away from Nokia's I had high hopes. Functions worked well and it had all the Nokia usability. BUT the ear speaker was to quiet to hear with any background noise and when talking people could not understand me as I sounded either crackely or like a robot. I tried it with and without the voice clarity but to no avail. Loved the phone but was no ue to me as a phone. Have know others with the same problem but have had replacements. O2 wouldn't replace mine as thet said nothing was wrong. Looking forward to the 6300i which is supposed to have had the faults fixed and has a longer lasting battery.

Pros: good build with stainless steel casing, loud stereo-feel speaker, easy to use, flash themes with animated wallpapers, all in all great handset. Cons: in my opinion the battery could have been slightly better although it can easily go 2 days with heavy usage without charging, multiple alarms can be set for days only i.e. no multiple alarms on same day (a feature which I like so I can set more than one alarm to wake me up), camera is just a joke (better having one than none i guess) or may be is because i'm used to cyber-shot phones.

Disappointed is the best way to describe my feelings about this 'phone. Having been a long term PAYT customer I eventually decided to go on contract. I chose the 6300 not just for looks and quality but also on the favourable reviews I read on this and other sites. Having used it for 6 months I am now in a position to offer my opinion. I don't regard myself as a heavy user, 20 - 30 texts and 30 minutes talk time a day at maximum seems fairly moderate to me. I realise the display guzzles power in huge quantities but I expected considerably better than the 15 - 25 hours use I get from mine, and that's even turning it off at night! To be honest, disappointed is an understatement. I thought the concept of a cell 'phone was to be toally mobile with it, not to have it plugged in at home or my desk? Nice looking 'phone, great features and lots of 'bells and whistles', but comes with a 'you're having a laugh' battery life! I'm now looking at the forthcoming 2600. Cheap and cheerful but hopefully a 'phone thats use lasts considerably longer than this one.

The original review (see above) refers to a 'beautiful stainless steel finish'. Unfortunately for me however the top third of the caseback is not stainless steel but black plastic. I carry my phone in my trouser pockets and I had this phone for 5 months until the black plastic case at the back cracked. This caused the screen to malfunction and the phone became unusable. Before it broke, I used the phone for phoning, texting and internet, I like the Nokia system set up and don't have any problems with the phone operation. The camera is slow (long lag between pressing shutter and picture taking) which makes it impossible to take pictures of kids/action shots etc. But maybe this is also the case with other phones (I don't use camera phones and as I usually use a Canon digital SLR perhaps I expect too much). Overall I would say the phone is very good, but as in my case its lack of robustness is demonstrable, be sure to take good care of it and/or buy a case.

I was a user of both n95 and n80, and I never thought of going back to a non N-series nokia model given the N-series great functionality and designs. Guess what? Nokia's 6300 proves me wrong. This phone is for those who don't want to beat around the bush looking for a nice straightforward phone for everyday usage (that means reliability, feel and style). The features are plentiful enough for a phone in this class, the reception and calls are reliable and clear, and the part where I love the most: it's build quality is exceptional. I have the one in all-black, and I can tell you, it's awesome. Those who said that they can't help touching the phone all the time, I'm having the same problem (although I've have it for a month already) and I still don't grow tired of the minimalistic design. It is one of those rare phones that invoke that exciting feeling when you get your first feel of it. I just have to make an extended note that I especially like the way Nokia made the casing with steel because firstly, it gives a very classy feeling and durability, and secondly, it gives it a weight that feels just right. My N95 was a big phone, but it felt too light for my liking and the plastics gives it a cheap-feeling. But don't get me wrong, I know there is a need for compensation when you have such a phone with so many great features. They just belong in 2 different classes. One gripe I have about 6300 will have to be it's platform. Maybe I was spoilt by N-series phones, but scrolling from icons to icons in the menu feels quite slow. I don't really like the active stand-by (I have always been using it on other phones) because of the laggyness in scrolling. I feel that some of the menu organisations can be improved, but that may just be personal preference. The upside is, loading times when you open folders and settings are fast. The camera is just decent, so don't expect too much from it. It does what it is supposed it and not much else. Not many phones can have such a short list of cons from me, so I give Nokia much credit for 6300. Those who are looking into phones from this class, you should seriously consider this amongst your choices.

Recommended 100%. Pluses include superb screen, fantastically easy to navigate, text etc. Brilliant MP3 player function, fast, loads of options, songs organised by track, album or artist. Using adapter; costing almost nothing on ebay top quality standard headphones can be uesd. Only minuses are camera i only average but fine for casual snaps to be shown on phone screen & battery life average. On;y lasted a day with me using all features & playing with menus, MP3 etc. I would suggest a life of 3 days under normal light texting/calls. To me I would say this about normal for this sort of phone. Another bonus is that a huge selection of lovely free themes can be downloaded from internet & transferred via mini sd card, some really col themes out there!

I bought the Nokia 6300 back in September after I was very clumsy and dropped my beloved Samsung into my tea. I went for the slim design, and had seen some ok reviews. After 3 months, the phone completely crashed, after being sent off for repair, Nokia exchanged it for a brand new model. Another 5 months after that, the phone developed a software problem. Originally anything put into the headphone or charger port would restart the phone, and a couple of days later it would just restart and turn off as it pleased, resulting in me missing lectures, and a placement. Wouldn't reccommend it for people who like a phone that lasts longer then 5 months. I'm now in a battle with Nokia to get a replacement phone that isn't Nokia, and so far I'm not impressed with their customer service.

All these errors as i far as i have read are not common and if it wasnt for these MANY errors, this phone was great! i actually almost fell in love with it for the first 6 months i had it (appart from the headfones not working but that wasn a big issue) and it was all round a great phone with many features and everyhting ran smoothely. i must be the only person complaining about this phone because it WAS a seriously good phone, probably my best ever.... my mother has the same phone and it has worked briiliantly for her! Also it was and is the best priced phone here in Australia! comparitivly, it is in the same price range as some VGA camera phones when it could be sold for so much more.... basically, great fone, just not mine! I have had this phone from since it came to the German market. By and large it is a good phone. However there is one major flaw! When using it with a bluetooth headset the other person, whom you are calling sometimes hears your speech VERY interupted, so that a meaningful conversation is not possible. This becomes regular and unusable when the other phone is also a Nokia 6300. So if you plan to use your phone with the BT headset, don't. For us this was very important and therefore the rating is low. Unfortunately, NOKIA do not acknowledge this problem.

Generally a very good phone. The design is sleak and slim. The metal casing giving it a solid feel and the buttons have a quality feel to them too. It's a simple to use phone with all the basic functions that you need. The screen quality is excellent and it can still be seen in bright sunlight. The are only a couple of things on the phone that I dont like. The camera is quite grainy especially on night mode and the text message setup isn't very user friendly. Unlike some other phones where they scroll by a line or page at a time, the nokia scrolls so that the message fills the screen. This means that for each message the text scrolls by a different amount. It makes reading longer texts very annoying as you lose the line which you last read causing you to re-read several lines or miss parts of the message. To get around this I tried using the small text option but the text is much too small to read comfortably (and I have good eye sight). Generally I rate this phone very highly, and it is great for people who don't want to pay a premium for features such as 3G, that in my case are rarely used.

I tried to turn it back on but it flashed a white screen twice then went off again. As I had had the phone over a month my phone supplier (Tesco) required me to send it back to them. So they could check it. They sent it back a month later saying there was a fault and that I could return it and get a new phone. I was very pleased with the phone when I got it back, but was dissapointed with the lack of memory on the phone and the memory card. But after having it for just over a week the same thing happened. I'm hoping to return and get a different phone this time, as obviously this phone is not the best.

Nokia...'Never Again’. after a long history with several Nokia fones I recently decided to upgrade to the 6300,what a mistake, this has to be the WORST fone I have ever had. Where to start?? Let’s leave the battery issue alone, we all know that one. Sending text message is now a long winded exercise, several clicks before you can select the recipient not like before, and try to get the details of a received text...before you just scrolled down the message to find this. now its click,click,click.....Have you tried the 'Send to many’ options in messaging, like to know who has figured this out...Ring a number that’s engaged...you gotta quickly move the fone around to view the screen to see the error message, no engaged tone....Network strength indicator, please supply magnifying glass to see this...'Voice activation' unless you can speak like Stephen Hawking don’t expect this to work. I could go on forever, however after 3 weeks of frustration I returned this fone for refund on the basis that it was not fit for its purpose, went on net and bought 2nd hand 6230i in very good nick. Happy Again!!! Hope this dissuades any potential buyer(s) and maybe Nokia will wake up and get with it again....

I agree with other people when they say that the phone is good, I have to admit it is. However, I am slightly disappointed that I seem to constantly have problems with the phone. First time it went faulty, it completely died after 3 months, as it was un-repairable, I was given a new one. However, now this "new" model decides as and when it wants to turn it's self off and die on me. (Leaving me with no alarm and missing a lecture). I take care of phones, so it has no mechanical reason to go faulty on me. Maybe I'm just an unlucky mobile phone owner this time around. I feel that I won't go back to Nokia, as I've had problems with them before on several occassions. Hope this helps.

I've had this phone for 8 months and I absolutely love it!! Unlike most phones it actually lives up to the description. The advantages would be the appearance as it looks great, and it feels good too, being so easy to use, good camera, good for new software and programs, attractive display themes, loads of funky camera effects and night-vision, flexible settings, great organisation features (such as calendar, to-do list, stopwatch, countdown timer scientific calculator, notes, and much more). The texting aspect is really good as I can text easily and don't have to worry about memory storage. The music player is excellent, but the disadvantages I would say is not being able to edit details on the library such as the name, genre, etc just to make it easier to find songs when you want them. Other disadvantages include the camera which, although being good quality, it takes alot of time to save the photo. The video player isn't very good, being jerky and unclear at time s. The lack of infrared isn't noticeable with the bluetooth feature, so it doesn't really affect the phone's performance. And most importantly, the low battery life is very annoying. I did buy an external memory card as the 128mb one wasn't really adequate. Generally the phone is brilliant value for money, ideal for most people and wonderfully easy to use. I could say that it is easily one of the best phones on the market with confidence. I hope this helps you to make the right decision.

And camera clarity of this phone is also not that good . Although the screen resolution is bigger than nokia 3500 .The battery life is also not at all good in comparison to the nokia 6233 which is very good in battery and last for 4 days. I may not be a typical user ... this is my second phone, after keeping an ancient Siemens A50 for the whole of five years. So I am truly impressed by the technological advance :-)! After a month of use I find that: 1) battery life is not as bad as some people claim, especially after cycling the battery a couple of times from full to empty it now lasts for three days of moderate use (including approx. a hour of screen reading per day - see below). 2) I knew about the e-mail and web clients (that´s why I chose this phone) but I am pleasantly surprised that I found on the Net even a PDF reader and an e-book reader for this phone - I use it a lot when commuting! 3) Contrary to what Nokia recommends, it does work perfectly even with other mini-USB cables, e.g. from an Olympus camera or from an external hard drive. 4) The camera is just enough for taking party pictures to embarass people afterwards - fine for me :-) 5) The only minnor annoyance is that the USB cover cannot be opened without taking off the back cover - but that is indeed a minor one.

If you want a quality phone, don't be decieved by the low price at the moment, i've had this phone 3 months and it's faultless, just perfect! It's smart, and very tactile with it's cool stainless steel cosmetics, which do not attract scratches as much as you would imagine, any minor marks can be erased with a little metal polish anyway! just like new! screen is bright and tough, with good clarity, tones are loud and clear, but there's also no chance of missing a call or sms/text as neon blue lights flash to alert you of these functions.. very useful if you need a phone on silent at work, as silent is without all tones and vibes, but the flashing side bar lets you know you are in demand and someone is contacting you. The keypad lights also in the same blue shade. The camera is all you would expect on a phone, if not more.. battery lasts pretty well too. the menu's are easy to follow, and use. all in all a superb phone, and one i will keep til it dies, as it's compact and has all the features you could ask for in a phone.. prospective buyers should note that this is a phone, not an IPOD or Camera, and accept it for it's purpose.. if you want a reliable handset, i fully recommend this phone. Unisex, so would suit anyone, regardless..
