Nokia 6233 Review

Rating:
Date: 08/12/2006
The Nokia 6233 is a stylish 3G phone with a high-quality stainless steel finish. It is a top of the range camera phone of standard shape and size weighing 110g which is slightly heavier then most of the non 3G phones.
The phone has a 2 megapixel camera with 8 x digital zoom and video capabilities which is typical for a phone within this price range although there is no flash or autofocus.
The display is amongst the highest quality compared with similar phones. It has a colour TFT screen which means it can be easily viewed in bright sunshine. The resolution is 240 x 320 pixels and supports 262k colours. It has a new series 40 user interface and an enhanced easy to read user-friendly menu with animated 3D and graphics.
The 6233 has a great music and multimedia player supporting various formats for audio and video playback (MP3, MP4, aAAC+, AAC, 3GPP, H.263, MPEG-4 and AMR). As well as an MP3 player, the phone also has a stereo FM radio with the Visual Radio feature that allows you to get information on the track or the artist. The twin stereo speakers give you a high quality 3D surround sound effect. A nice feature is that music and video clips stored on your phone can be added to the caller ID for contacts in your phone book. MP3's can also be used as ringtones.
Memory for the 6233 is very good as you have 6MB of internal memory as well as a 64MB external memory card which is great for storing plenty of songs and other files on your phone. If however this is still not enough, the phone supports the storage of a 2GB microSD memory card.
Bluetooth, USB and infrared are all supported, Bluetooth and infrared being a wireless connection and a USB cable for connecting to a PC.
Being a 3G phone, it has the fastest data transfer rates when connected to the internet giving you a broadband like connection.
The standby time is up to 340 hours which is excellent for a 3G phone, but it does not have the functionality to make a video call which is quite unusual for a 3G phone. It runs on a tri-band frequency which means that it will work in Europe and America but not Japan.
Overall, this is a good phone with some good features, but there are a few issues that make it one we can not recommend. There has been a typical complaint from some users that the reception is poor and the phone tends to freeze up a lot. If you are looking for a better 3G phone, the Samsung and Sony Ericsson models come well recommended eg. the Samsung Z540 or the Sony Ericsson K800i.

Features of the Nokia 6233 include:

  • 3G
  • Camera: 2-megapixel camera with 8x smooth, digital zoom and landscape mode
  • Video Camera: Supports video sharing, streaming, and recording capabilities
  • Display: QVGA 262,144 color, 320x240 pixel display
  • Music Player: Stereo FM radio and music player, supports MP3, MP4, eAAC+ and AAC music files
  • Media Player: Integrated video player for download and playback or for streaming: 3GPP, H.263 video, MPEG-4, and AMR
  • Java Games y
  • Ringtones: Use pre-loaded polyphonic midi ring tones, MP3, eAAC+
  • Connectivity: Infrared, USB port
  • Memory: Up to 70MB total memory (6MB internal + 64MB memory card), supports up to 2GB of expandable, microSD memory
  • Messaging: MMS, SMS, e-mail
  • Internet: WAP 2.0, XHTML browser, HSCSD, CSD for browsing and as data modem, EDGE Class 10 (4+1, 3+2): speed up to 236.8 kbps, GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) class 10 (4+1, 3+2), HSCSD (High-Speed Circuit-Switched Data) transfer up to 43.2 kbps in HSCSD networks
  • Operating Frequency: WCDMA 2100 and tri-band GSM coverage on up to five continents (GSM/EDGE 900/1800/1900)
  • Size: 108 x 46 x 18 mm,
  • Weight: 110 g

Got this phone from my brother, he got a new one on contract so he didn't want this one anymore. Features are awesome, like the big screen. But when listening to MP3 in the Gallery, the backlight stays on, this is a pain as it shortens battery life. Also when listening to music in player or gallery, the screen will go white with a "beep" and the phone will restart. Data is not lost. But a firmware upgrade swiftly brushed this problem away. It's got stereo speakers (they are very loud!), bluetooth and Infrared and a FM Radio. Also 2 Megapixel camera with CMOS sensor. High quality video and pictures. Exellent phone, recommend to anyone.

Great phone. I liked this when i had reviewed it. My friend had bought this. I asked him about the phone he just told me to have a look @ it. Man i went crazy& after few hours i also had my own. The sounds r great well as picture quality. Nokia must have given the flash for camera. This phone beats all other phones in battery performance. Web Browsing& downloading is nice. I would suggest everybody to but this phone.

This is the BEST music phone I've had! Beats the Nokia N73 Music Edition, Nokia 5310 Xpress Music, Nokia 5610 Xpress Mesic, and most of the primary phones in the Sony Erricson W-series. Hey, I'm speaking only soundwise! The camera is good, but lacks a flash and dual cam, which is a pity. EGPRS speed is unbelievable. Hardy phone(I've dropped it 3 times already! Unintenally, of course!) But the music player could have been better. But better than the Nokia 6300. Anyway, the Dual Sterio 3-D surround speakers are the best I've had so far. Wish the memory cards could have gone to 4GB, but well, 2GB is enough to hold all my music and videos.

My only grudge is about the battery backup which i found little disappointing than what other nokia models generally give.. But overall, the phone works great and am extremely satisfied..

Such a great phone, high quality sound and pictures, MicroSD cards compatibility, GREAT video-recording function with high resolution 640x480 and best quality, ever seen a phone recording so great videos as 6234 can do? NOPE. Also good photo quality. 3G connectivity to stay in touch anywhere you are, at least in my case, i never had problems by using internet functionality in this phone. High speed Bluetooth combining with IRDA and Radio. And the best is the price, for me, the best phone i've ever had. I'm really in love with it!!

A really outstanding cell phone! I'm a music fan, and I just love the 3D surround sound quality of the 6233! It beats the S.E w810i, k800i and the w850i as well as the w530i. In the NSeries, it beats the N70 music, N73 music, and the N72 as well as the N76. Hey, don't mistake my point; if you're the type who loves the fancy stuff like flash, dual cam, t.v, wi-fi and so on, you'll hate this phone, But for the price, it has the greatest sound effect that I've ever heard. Well done, Nokia!

ive had dis fone for nearly 2 YEARS NOW wen i bought it it was fantastick. Great camera, display, sound quality and so on. also a major gd thing about it is that no matter how many times i av dropped it during that time it hasnt broken. when u soeak it doesnt crash and u can control the loudness of your calls. some bad things are that now wen i am upgrading my fone to a LG Veiwty that u can use micro SD cards in, it is nearly impossible to take the memory card out of the slot. Before i first got it I was expecting so much as my previous sony ericsson K800i and my nokia 6230i were perfect. and wen i did finally get it it met my expectations and had so much more exept from the fact that it was a tinny bit on the chunky side. Overall this is a great fone with a couple of bad things dat Nokia can solve. So 4/5 THIS FONE IS GREAT AND I RECCOMEND IT TO ANY1 WHO WANTS A COOL AND PRACTICAL FONE! BUT FOR THE TECHNO PEOPLE TAKE SOMETHING ELSE.

I have had many Nokia phones over 11 years and this is the first one to give me trouble, and lots of it. I'm sick to the back teeth of it. Love the screen, like the camera, hate the resets, the dodgy power button, the fragile slimline power jack. Particularly dislike having to set it up again each time I've had it fixed (3 times in 6 months). I'm not going to fix it up this time - it's being replaced.

Whilst takin a Pic on my 6233 i go to send it via multimedia it crashes then goes to a white screen it then returns to my standby screen ..(without asking me for my pin numbers) This is my 2nd replacment phone.. I recently returned it to 'Nokia care center' in victoria Australia, also reporting one of the speakers is not working. i got it back a week later they didn't fix speaker fault & the picture scaling fault was fixed until i took a pic the next day and tried to send it, Now is broken again. * I have tried setting the image quality to MEd & LOW * and reducing the image size to 640x 480 (which the phone does normaly) * i have a 1 gig memory card in it.. C'MON nokia get with the program. My next mobile/cell phone is a Sony/Ericson for sure..

Hello everbody thru out the world.. Just came across this site. It's probably my fate. Really interesting opinions and reviews from this site. And so i'm here to give mine. FYI, bought this 6233 early last year 2007. And as of today, 15 march 2008, this phone is still 'something' to me. Though i can't fastforward or rewind a 3gp file. I'm still happy with this phone. Physically attractive, got weight, compact, simple yet elegant with piano black and s.steel combination. And lite blue lumination light makes it cool. The keypads, very adorable to handle. Guess what, now i'm viewing and posting to this site with my very 6233. Thanks to opera. Among the criteria of this 6233 i'm proud of are the marvellous audio + speaker (a really something to show off!) and the value for money. I bought this phone at the price of RM700.00 (around USD200.00) c/w 1Gb external memory. That can consider cheap here in kuala lumpur.

Well, I purchased a Nokia 6233 on July, 2007 after referring to lots of good & bad comments. I am sure I made the correct decision. Previously, I purchased a Nokia 3200 on 2004, & at that time, it was a new one & still working without any problem during the last 3 years, so Nokia is good. The Nokia 6233 is superb to my budget. I have compared the sound quality with Nokia N Series up to N77, even with the new Nokia 5610 Xpress Music (Which they say it has a separate chip for audio), but the loudness of the Nokia 6233 wins the competition, coz it has the two stereo speakers in the two sides (The stereo speakers should be in the two sides of the phone to get the maximum stereo effect, rather than having it in top, bottom or in the same side). On 2008, Jan, I updated the firmware to v5.60 although I didn’t have any software problem during the last 6 months. Currently with the 1GB memory card, it is working absolutely fine. Even the battery is good. When concern mu sic, I use my phone to listen to Gospel Songs, & this Nokia 6233 has really supported me with that during the last 6 months. It has the features I wanted although some are not there like, office document viewing facility, a good music interface for the music player. I recently installed Opera Mini 4, Yahoo Go! And they all are working fine. I hate to play games in the phone coz it will make the performance of the phone go down, even the key pads, so no comments regarding games. Overall, the Nokia 6233 is fine & has no problems, no hanging ups, no stuck incidents, no sudden restarts. I have dropped my phone about 4 times, but nothing has happened. So I recommend who ever is favorable of the model 6233, its appearance, go for it. I bought a DKU-2 data cable for it, & it’s also compatible with the phone.

I would say that te sound of this phone beats the latest phone in the market like the n73 music addition and other high grade phones. And camera clarity of this phone is also too good . The screen resolution is bigger than nkia 3500 which seems to be a downgrade model of nokia 6233 .The battery life is also oo good in comparison too the 3500 and 6300 which are very low in battery. Its much more stylish and compact design forces me to select this phone in comparison to 6300.It is also packed with 3g experience and gives a power pack performance when used with nokia provided handsfree. Overall i would say it as a jack of all trades and phone of victory

Do not buy this phone it is a waste of time and money. I had problem after problem with it from the day I got it. I took it to be fixed at a nokia repair centre and was told it had an intermittent fault and could not be fixed despite taking good care of my phone and paying insurance. I also had to buy four chargers for it as the nokia chargers stopped working after so long mysteriously I have no idea why. I had to buy a new battery for it as well (all this wasnt cheap believe me.) I was then told by the company and the network 3G that they wouldnt replace my phone or attempt to try and fix it again. Genrally speaking, a pretty good cellphone. Would have graded it 'excellent', but for one thing:the hands-off attachment - ears phones, if you like - is a pain in the neck. And not just because of the very poor quality of the earphones which come with the cellphone. The main hitch is with the socket which is meant to take the earphones. A couple of months and it begins to give you problems. Either the other party can not hear what you aresaying though you can hear them, or vice versa. So what do you do? You rush to Nokia service centre. They tell you that they may take anything up to 10 days to fix it and you must leave the phone with them for that long. At least, that is so here in Mumbai, India. And all this, if they have not fobbed you off saying the problem is with the atear-phones set and not with their infalliable mobile phone! So beware!

Have had this phone for 6 months, having always had Nokias for years but then had a couple of Sony Ericssons, a Motorola RAZR. It was like putting on a favourite old pair of shoes coming back to Nokia - had really missed them. The 6233 is a solid middle of the range phone. No particular bells and whistles, but that doesn't bother me really. Only gripes are hardware ones - microphone can be a bit dodgy; turning off and turning back on again solves that problem when it occurs. Randomly, my phone loses its dictionary memory every now and then which does annoy me. But generally this is a good bit of kit. Not the best phone I have ever had (that one of my early Nokia's which was pretty much unbreakable!), but this is as good as I have had for a few years. Camera quality is also very good.

I've had a 6234 for over a year now, and I've never experienced any freezing/shut down problems or reception issues as described elsewhere. The camera is excellent, though a flash would be good. Also the absence of a "front" camera for video calls is baffling. I find the battery life poor, barely lasting a weekend away without a charge. Its the first Nokia I've owned which needs tools to remove the fascia, and although its worn fairly well it is now looking a bit scruffy. I had to replace the keypad after the "5" came off, although all in all its stood up to a lot of abuse without breaking, apart from this. I find its bluetooth much, much more reliable than that on the 6230 it replaced. When I first saw this phone "in the flesh" I was disappointed that it seemed "big" compared to the 6230 but i the end I've been very impressed over a year of trying to break it!

I've had the 6233 for about a year now and it's been pretty good and reliable. I've got it in white so it looks kinda art-deco which I like. Downsides for me though are that the memory (inc. memory card) is way too small to be able to store as many pictures and messages as I want(which really isn't that many, I could store more on my old Samsung E350), especially seeing as I don't have any music on my phone at all. Also, even when on sleep and energy saving mode the screen lights up every 2 mins or so which is incredibly annoying - though my friend has a newer version of the phone and Nokia appear to have ironed out this glitch. Another problem is that the new-style Nokia charger is rubbish and I've had to replace mine twice already! This is a common problem with the new chargers and that would make me reconsider whether to buy another new Nokia. A major problem is also that there isn't a flash! Much more primitive phones have one and I feel that Nokia really should n't have tried to save money there... Oh and the ringtones/message alert tones are awful. Nonetheless, despite these faults it is actually a pretty good phone for those who just want a phone!

I am sure I was simply unlucky. But how come Nokia affords to throw such a mess on the market? Aren't the phones tested once they leave the assembling line? Wow! what a phone, and where to start? The O/S at first appears easy to use, however it seems to struggle when the user wishes to customise, there's folders everywhere and duplications of them in both the internal memory and the flash card memory, why isn't there a USB cable out plug? as I don't want to purchase a bluetooth adapter just so my PC can talk to it thankyou very much! On to the reliability, the battery has to be recharged every 2 days, so it's useless if you are an out-door kind of person. My 'down' button failed after 6 months of infrequent use - the whole internals were replaced by a new unit which refused to hold a charge for 8 hours (very handy for when my son was born!) this new unit was then replaced for another new unit which suffered a cracked screen after less than 24hours. Eventually I gave back the phone to Nokia after 7 months whilst having the same expression on my face as I would give a disadvantaged child. Overall, I'd say avoid this phone and buy a cheap handset so that when it fails, the disapointment will be easier to handle!

This is my second handset in twelve months after a replacement of first one, which could not be reset/repaired. A major dissapointment, basically it is a disaster! I have had 4 Nokia 6233 in almost as many months this year (2007). For no apparent reason it cuts out, some times it will ring when receiving an incoming call, next time total silence. 5 calls to the answering service, then you get a message saying it cannot accept any more, I could go on!. The staff are always very helpfull, and quote perfectly the standard script, and within 24 hours, a replacement arrives, with the same problems, so the cycle repeats itself again and again. I have had other Nokia models over the last 5 years that have been almost trouble free, so I find it hard to believe, that Nokia were not aware from day one, that this model has serious problems with reliability. It certainly is not fit for purpose, and as I spent the greater part of the week on the road, and need a reliable mobile, I would like Nokia to let me know what compensation package they are prepared to offer, for all the frustration etc this model has caused me. Call me Nokia! Alex, Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, England.
