Reviewed by M on 21/06/2009 I've had several Nokia phones over the last nine years and this has been the best by miles! For well over two years it's lived in my pocket, and taken some punishment, but it still works well. With a decent battery ( needs over 1000 mA hrs) it's adequate for fairly heavy daily use. I have no negative comments, whatsoever! Rating:
Reviewed by Robert Kinsella on 15/06/2009 I have a 6230i for 3 years now and still find it great. Its a little sow but it has never let me down and find it does most things the new phones do. Rating:
Reviewed by GSD on 26/02/2009 I had a 6230i, then got rid of it in favour of my free upgrade 6500c. What a mistake, the 6500c is good but the 6230i is the real classic. If you don't mind the 1.3m camera then everything else on it is brilliant, especially the expandable memory. Try and buy one of these in an online auction and you'll see just how loved they are! 4 years on second hand models still sell for £20 a piece. If you have one to sell, please email me on glenscotdear@hotmail.com Rating:

I just had a long stay in the USA and many of my friends and even mobile dealers there were surprised at all the features my phone has at the price. Apparently, the 6230i wasn't released there. I've used every feature on it, and other than the speed of accessing the memory card, I am very happy with it. Rating:

Reviewed by STV on 05/11/2008 I've been using 6230i for more that 2 years 8 months and had absolutely no issues for the first 2 years. Only recently there have been problems with the battery getting puffed and discharging within a couple of hours. I still cant give away this phone. It has all the necessary features that are in today, sleek enough to not show an ugly bulk in the pockets, not too slim or delicate like the new phones and easily noticeable if its missing ;). I've changed 2 batteries and will buy another one soon. For long life of the new battery, my vendor advised me to only charge it for 30-45 minutes when the battery is low. I have a feeling it will work. So this is to all those facing a similar issue. Rating:
Reviewed by LS1980 on 05/11/2008 6230i..........Great phone in its day. I found one the other day in a recycle bin for mobiles. Loads of different makes and models, but this one stood out more than the others as I had one when they first came out. Since then I have never had one that comes close to the quality of menu/interface to the build of handset. Yeah it does get dust behind the cover and on the screen, but hte cover removes and you can clean it. I use a 3109 for work. I do prefer the up to date menu/interface Nokia has at the moment, but I seek a phone with little gadgets just like the 3109. I did have a 3110 for my private phone but the only extra was a rubbish camera, yet the phone was great. Why are manufacturers going away from what a phone should do. You make calls and send texts and that what phones should be about. Please please please Nokia, make a phone for calls and texts only, combine what was the 6310i the 6230i and phones like 3109 and make a great new phone with great battery life, signal etc. Rating:

I have recently lost the phone fourtunately it had full charge when i lost it a week later when I found it ( had put it on lock and silent) and it still had 2 Thats TWO bars of battery left it's also really quick to charge up in about 4 hours it is an immense phone ignore what people have said about Battery life. great phone great features only oine niggle when texting you only get 160 charachters on some phones i have seen 700 charachters i mean come on nokia let us right a decent text. Reviewed by titan on 25/08/2008 I have had this phone now from when it first came out. Yes the camera is a bit sad at only 1.3 megs however I did upgrade to a N73 last year and it has given up the ghost and was not a patch on this phone. Easy to use and quick to respond, what more could you ask for but for Nokia to copy this phone and improve some of the features like the camera but then in doing that would it ruin a good phone. I am back using my old faithful til my new contract come up in November, what will I try next??? Rating:

Reviewed by Peter Hunter on 30/09/2007 Despite its age (2 years old at the time of writing), this is still a pretty good phone for someone who wants good features, if basic by the standards of the latest technology. It is a slim, fairly lightweight (99g) handset with a 64k colour screen, 208 x 208 pixels. Feature-wise, it inludes a speakerphone, MP3 player, clear FM radio, 1.3 megapixel camera and all the usual gizmos you'd. When first introduced, its RRP was around £200 but shopping around now could well get you one for under half that. It usually comes with a standars (boooooriiiing black & silver fascia, but that can be changed to something closer to your taste. Simple to use and with good functionality, this is well worth investing in, particularly if you take advantage of some of the pay-as-you-go deals from the big retailers eg Carphone Warehouse, Phones4U etc. Rating:

HOWEVER, After 6 months of use the phone started to slow down, then menu got slower and reaction times to the keys were slow. The keys can squeak and move around a bit, plus the middle menu button gets more and more difficult to press as time goes on. Recently it was stolen so I reported the IMEI number and it's blocked (cheer) so now I'm looking for a new phone. Reviewed by Zia on 07/08/2007 This phone is rubbish. Rubbish battery life, rubbish loudspeaker quality, rubbish camera quality, the phone sometimes crashes and restarts by itself for no specific reason (sometimes whilst you're in the middle of an important phonecall), and worst of all is the speed of the darn thing. The menu responses are very slow, and it gets worser as you store more data on it, so you then end up re-flashing the bloomin' thing. The camera shutter speed also sucks because you have to hold the camera for quite some time 'after' having clicked the button to take a picture of something. Nokia dont even provide downloadable firmwire updates for this, so you have to take it to a dealer who flashes it for you. This phone may have some features that other phones dont, such as Push To Talk etc. (even though PTT doesnt work on my network), But if all those features lack brilliance (what you would expect for something that costs around £150) then its not worth it as it renders the phone: 'useless' All in all and to cut a long story short, the 6230i as it stands, is rigged with flaws, the main being the reaction speed after inputs are given; if that problem is fixed then i guess it would be ..okay Rating:

Needed something versatile, inexpensive, and unlocked so if I should return to the US (currently living in the UK), no problems with PAYGo plans with any network. May not be the most up-to-date, however, does everything I want. Primarily, a good cell-phone. Next, the extra little features are great. Camera is fine, MMC expansion is good, decent screen, Bluetooth functions are great (especially with my TomTom 910), and with a £20.00 adapter, works terrific with my old CARK-91 in the car. I've been a Nokia customer since the early 90's (yeah, big'n'bulky back then). This is my 3rd one. I'd definitely get something simple yet robust like this again. Rating:

For example, sometimes i switch on my phone and it tells me to insert sim card or that my phone is blocked, leading to me having to turn it off and back on again until it works. This also happens sometimes when i have the phone on keypad lock which ruins my signal. The camera is not very good in dull conditions or fine detail. The biggest let down though is the bluetooth. The radio reception can be a bit rough when on a train - but its a great feature as you can only listen to the mp3 so many times. Saving the audio data as .aac compresses it even more and allows more songs on the standard 32Mb Card. The camera is not too bad when you get used to it's limitations (strong light or too dark) - the video in 3GP format is a bit poor compared to the N70's mpeg recording. Java apps are fun and easy to install with the supplied software. Phones calls interupt your music or radio and continue where you left off when you hang up. Excellent OS, nice keypad, and a host of other features that perform much better than other phones for a similar price - camera quality is very good for what it is, MP3 player is great if you have a decent headset - the one supplied is often sub-standard, depending on which operator you get it from - with an MMC card slot capable of up to 2GB storage (NB the card supplied is usually 32/64MB, but larger ones are easy and cheap to buy). The only major flaw that I know of is the unreliability of the battery (NOKIA BL-5C). This is a model of battery that I have seen many complaints about in various forums - although the general consensus is that if you can get hold of a good one, it will last forever. But after a year and a half, it started dropping calls constantly (like every five minutes) and become unusuable. Also, the microphone is oversensitive. Everyone complains to me that it picks up all background noise and amplifies it just as loud as my voice. This makes the phone usuable only in quiet environments. Was a little wary at first that it wouldn't present much of a difference, but hell am I happy I got it. I recently upgraded to a Nokia N73, wanting more. Instantly regretted it. The Symbian was dodgy at best, like a cheap version of windows in its performance and speed (don't think Nokia have quite got the hang of Smartphone OS and Third-party applications). It also shut down and crashed in exactly the same way it's reported to do in it's reviews. So I went back lovingly to this one. It's still as good as new, but I may even buy another one now to take over when it passes away! Breakdown: Camera: Perfect for a phone (Want more pixel? Get a Digital Camera). Music: Capable if I wanted music on it- with a memory card slot to easily expand (Want more music? Get an iPod!!). Keypad: Best. Look: Stylish, good weight for flipping around like a cocktail waiter. If you want something more then your reading the wrong review and should go out and purchase a digital camera or an MP3 player. People forget especially with mobile phones that a camera is more of gimmick not a serious tool for taking pictures you take one or two or stupid fuzzy ones when your on a night out and then delete the pictures latter on. The screen is good; no problems at reading or making txt messages and you can see whose calling etc etc. Please don’t listen to people who write reviews with abbreviated words if they cant be bothered to write words in full then they probably haven’t had the time go through the phone properly and just complain because they have nothing better to do. And remember a mobile is for calling and testing, also you should ask yourself how many times do you use any of the other features through out your day, it’s also under £100, cushti Rating:

Reviewed by Richard Fell on 04/12/2006 Here's my ownership experience: 1) Better than the E70 (but then, just about anything is) and more dependable than the N73: it didn't freeze or crash during my time with it. 2) Calls were not cut off or disrupted. But that was largely because they were missed: Nokia thinks it's a great idea to provide a mobile that's totally inaudible when you're outdoors in Sainsburys or wherever so that you only (just) hear it ringing at the precise moment the caller rings off. Well, that's pretty brilliant R&D then. 3) The screen -- well, my screen at any rate -- seemed readily affected by dust. Dust not on top of the screen but under it. So whatever definition it may have had, it very soon lost it. 4) I didn't propose to purchase it for the camera. If I want a camera, I use a Nikon or Canon which don't have phones attached (hey, that's radical, man!) So as a camera, it's exactly what its spec says it to be: the equivalent of an unbranded £10 thing from China that gets flogged off on eBay to people who wouldn't know a pixel from a pixie. 5) It went back to the supplier. The third Nokia to be returned. 6) The supplier said it could be upgraded with a firmware fix to solve the problem of ascending tones. I declined on the basis that if a mobile phone manufacturer actually thinks it was a good idea in the first place to produce an inaudible mobile phone, then that's a manufacturer I'm really not interested in bothering with, thanks. So that's three Nokias gone. All I have left in my possession are two of my original Nokias. They are green with black tops and I wear them in the garden. They are called Nokia boots and I bought 'em in 1986. They were produced by Nokia before cell phones were ever heard of and they share with the 6230i the same abiding characteristic: if anyone rings my garden boots, the left one or the right, I can't hear them calling. Reviewed by Glenn in Zurich on 16-06-2006 I had the privelege of owning Nokia's (justly) legendary 6310i business phone for years, but like all of these dang things it's ridiculously sensitive to water, or in this case, a cc or two of beer splashed on the keyboard killed it. I was crushed, and went out looking for a new phone (btw I'm an engineer for a telecom provider). I chose the 6230i, thinking from the pics that it was more or less the same size as the 6310i. What a surprise I was in for. This IS NOT a substitute for the venerable 6310!! It is a miniature video-game toy with telephone functionality whose battery barely wheezes through 2 days (I don't call much and move in areas with very high signal level...but in the French countryside, it barely makes it through a day without recharging)(no, GPRS was not running, I keep it turned off). The keyboard is microscopically useless (the 6310i had *great* tactile, positive keys). At once I set about replacing it...I got a 6103 which is very similar in terms of fea tures (REAL PHONE features, like Nokia's still unbeatable, logically intuitive user interface), but a much nicer phone to USE. If you want basic phone features (voice & SMS) and don't care about megapixels and surfing (on a PHONE, fer cryin' out loud....), the 6230i is probably not what you're looking for (and battery life is _terrrible_) Rating:
Reviewed by Rob on 05-06-2006 After trying lots of different types of phone I eventually decided on the 6230i and am really pleased with my choice. I'm one of those old fashioned typed who just wants a phone to 'do what it says on the tin' (i.e. make and receive calls easily and have an easy to use text messaging system). I wasn't that pushed about camera or MP3 player quality coz I have a good digital camera and an iPod. I knew I needed a Nokia because of poor signal quality in my house and I have found Nokia aerials to be much stronger in the past (e.g. the same sim card in my old sony ericsson has much poorer coverage than a nokia). I also wanted Bluetooth but didn't really care about the other 'fun' stuff. I find the signal strength on the 6230i even better than previous nokias and the whole thing has an intuitive ease of use and bright screen displays that make it a doddle to use as a business phone (which was the basic reason to buy it). Having said that the extra features are proving quite fun. I l ove the MP3 ringtone facility. I can take an MP3 from my iTunes library (on an Apple Mac) and edit out a particular phrase (I use Quicktime for this editing) and Bluetooth it across as a ring tone. This way I can get my favourite air guitar solo as a ringtone - cool! I can edit photos using photoshop and transfer them across to use as screensavers, wallpaper etc. I like using the radio on the phone but found that the headphones that came with it hurt my ears. I found a converter on eBay for a couple of quid that allows me to connect my earbud headphones so that problem was easily solved. Some minor gripes. Yes the camera is a bit grainy (but what do you expect from 1.3 megapixels? if I want better quality I'll use my 'proper' camera) and the video won't win any awards but so what? it's a phone for God's sake! Battery life gets a lot of stick on reviews but its okay for me (I put it on charge every second night. So far anyway, I really rate this phone and would recommend anyone to buy it. Rating:

I like the sleek silver design and the Xpress-On covers make it easy to replace the case should you crack the screen or any other part of the case.
The screen is a lot clearer than that of the 6230 and the camera seems great. It is really easy to use, and the ringtones, of which you can have MP3 or AAC are very loud which is useful for me as I spend quite a bit of my time on the east coast of England and the wind can pick up there quite a bit. A headset is supplied with this phone which is great because you can use it to listen to the radio and your MP3 tracks discreetly and you can talk to people hands free. Unfortunately a cable is not supplied with this phone which means that to transfer things to and from a PC you have to buy one. Alternatively you can buy a bluetooth dongle to transfer data between your PC and any bluetooth compatible phone but it is a lot slower than cable. I bought a cable for the phone and with Nokia PC Suite it was easy to set up, and I was able to transfer all the contacts and appointments from Microsoft Outlook to my phone.
There is one gripe I do have about this phone however and this is that the speaker can vibrate against the case and distort the sound which can make it hard to hear who you are speaking to. This fault was sorted initially by the people at the O2 shop this morning but it recurred this evening, and I fount that blowing into the speaker seems to prevent it. This is a good phone however, and I would recommend anyone who is looking for a good, reliable yet stylish phone to buy it, and if you are an O2 customer in England, buy this phone from the O2 shop as you may be eligable for a discount. Even if you aren't, £129.99 is a good price for this handset Rating:
Reviewed by David on 25-05-2006 I have tried the Samsung D500 and more recently the D520. On the face of it, both these devices are great. They look good and feel good in the hand but once switched on and in use, their short comings become very apparent.
Firstly the 'start up' screen on power up. Any machine or device that starts up with the word 'fun' immediately tell me that its not a serious device at all, it is but a mere toy. Then there is the matter of tapping
out a text. What should be a one handed job becomes a two handed task as both of these phones are top heavy when open and the second hand needs to be employed to stop it from being dropped. I have no doubt that they are great devices in their way and will appeal to the teen market but if us adults want a good, solid reliable phone with reasonable battery life and a host of practical functions then the Nokia 6230i has to be the one to
choose. Texting is a doddle and the screen, while not the best around is plenty good enough. It does enough, in my opinion to appeal to the gadget heads among us but is easy and fun (there's that word again) to use. In a nut shell, if you want a toy, go for the Samsung but if you want a piece of quality equipment then the NOKIA is for you. Rating:

Reviewed by Guess on 03-05-2006 hey, this phone is great in every aspect. but the problem with these new models of Nokias is the dust collection on the screen. can't imagine a brand with such a great name and fame haven't been able to rectify such a simple problem till date. they all need is to increase the hight of the rubber gasket around the screen only by 0.5 mm and this problem will be greatly reduced. (it'll avoid to remove the express cover every alternate day to clean the screen) they don't really need an advise from me with those high tech engineers working for Nokia round the clock. Nokia.......wake up....it's a real shame. Look at all those cheaper models by other manufacturers, they have taken well care of this problem. Reviewed by Koelan on 24-04-2006 This phone has performed wonderfully. It is only one small oversight on a security 'feature' that Nokia comes up lacking. The Java Application
Security won't allow unsigned (read: free) applications to access the data on the phone/mem card without numerous (annoying) security prompts. The
'Always Allow' access option is greyed out, and Nokia have informed me
that: "This is desired behavior. It is to prevent unsigned (read: untrusted by nokia) applications from having unconditional access to user data"
I feel that this feature is a decision best left to the customer. If you want to use an application like that, you should have the option to disable that security, and not have Nokia decide for you which software is 'safe'.
This would also effect people who develop software themselves.
In conclusion, this caused the 6230i to lose two stars. It would have
scored a 5 if this 'feature' had been properly thought out. Rating:

The screen is brighter and clearer, the software is faster, its overall a great phone and real move forward for Nokia. I chose the 6230i as many phones on the market today are getting bigger again and my 6100 was perfect pocket size. The 6230i is slightly thicker, and you can feel it more in your pocket but its features make up for that and its still one of the smallest phones packed with many more features and better software than the Motorola V3. The Motorola V3 has an mp3 player too, but only has about enough memory for 1 song!!! The 6230i can be upgraded to 512k and plays mp3's excellently. There is even a stereo headset included in the box, AND if you buy a bluetooth headset you can play your music wireless! Excellent. HOWEVER... one BIG problem is these features SUCK battery life. My old 6100 would last days and days. If I use the mp3 player, and send texts (which means the bright screen is lit up) and talk on the 6230i, the battery disappears on you!!! If you are just talking on it for a few minutes each day it will stay charged for a few days, but if you use all the features, you'll have to charge it reguskarly. I don't mind charging as its worth it for a great phone, and charging takes no time. I definately recommend this phone to anyone looking for a loud, clear, easy to use phone with mp3 player. Reviewed by alex on 21-08-2005 This phone is great. I had lots of Nokia models in the past, and even some models from Motorola. I bought Nokia 6230i a month ago, but I had some problems with it. When I receive calls I hear strange sounds in the speaker, like you listen to very loud music and your speakers start to make strange sounds. And I have a dead pixel on my Nokia 6230i screen. It is a great phone with its 1.3 MegaPixel camera, MMC suport and multimedia features. Very good phone but with serios problems.... Rating:
Reviewed by Raamee on 13-08-2005 Just bought it a 2 weeks ago. UNHAPPY. The dictaphone, voice recorder, records voice but the sound is SOOOO SILENT. Good that it had one hour but NO SATISFATION when you CANNOT hear it LOUDLY. The video also records voice but it is so SILENT. The photographs I take cannot be viewed one by one. I have to go to menu and select again and again. iT SHOULD also come on its own. Should correct the dictaphone thing and the the other problem, then it is perfect. I love the design, anyway! Reviewed by Jane C on 03-08-2005 I was very dissapointed with this handset. I had to return the phone 3 times and finally cancelled my upgrade. The first handset repeatedly turned itself off without warning, the second t had a faulty screen. To top it all off, the third did the same - turning itself off AND a faulty screen!!! What happens if you miss a call because your handset turns itself off?? - worth the risk??? I also noticed dust collecting on the inside of the screen - v annoying. I was very dissapointed by nokia this time. Rating:
Reviewed by Robert A on 25-07-2005 I used to own a 6230, and I think that other people who follow this upgrade path will also find the 6230i a bit of a disappointment. Ok, so the screen and camera are better and they've improved the games, ringtones and graphics. It's a small, neat package, and is as attractive as most Nokia phones. In short, it does everything I want from a phone - makes and receives calls, text and picture messages, in a small, light package. On the downside, however, it's significantly slower than its predecessor, something that you'll especially notice if you use the key combinations to navigate the menus - it can't keep up with your key presses and drops them, taking you to places you didn't want to be. I think the problem is that they've tried to fill it with "upgrades", but have ended up adding functions that most people will never use or wouldn't miss if they were removed at the cost of overloading the memory. Take, for example, email synchronisation via WAP, "themes", a "sound equaliser", a translator (!), a "walkie talkie" - none features the average person is ever going to want. At the same time, they've removed some of the most useful features, such as the ability to automatically delete/overwrite text messages to stop your inbox overflowing, and you now have to delete message reports one by one. The camera is now slower too, making it hard to capture the moment, and battery life is even worse than the 6230! I wish I'd stayed with that and waited for the next small Nokia. Rating:
Reviewed by BtrFly on 21-07-2005 Overall I think I shouldnt have wasted my money, upgrading from the Nokia 3200. The battery life is abysmal (max 2 days, if you do ANYTHING), the camera is only marginally better, and the typing in sms form is SLOW. That's not the worst of it either. I have already returned the phone once with software problems, and now this second handset is doing the same problem as the first one. The phone has a bug, the keypad locks occasionally when you try and type any sort of sms. It locks up, and nothing can bring it back, and then closes down the phone. Then when you turn the phone back on, it opens at the main screen instead of going through boot up phase. I have had this model phone for exactly 7 days, and it has happened 6 times. If anyone else has heard of this problem please post. Rating:
Reviewed by Viktor Aragon on 05-06-2005 the HYPERSUPERPHONE - had a 6230 before. I thought having a similar looking 6230i wouldn't make so much of an impact. but i spent 8 hours drooling over the new features. was supposed to buy a samsung d500.....6230i is way ahead! Rating:
Reviewed by sandeep (India) on 02-06-2005 I have recently purchase the mobile & love it with its mp3 capacity and digital sound - woh!!!!!!!!. About the camera it also good especially in a day & look is so simple nobody can say this is a expensive mobile because of screen size but the all function all very nice. The last thing is radio/visual radio which was excellent & mind blowing. You can also load any document for your official purpose also. Rating:

Reviewed by JoJo mAn on 24-05-2005 THIS IS THE WORST PHONE EVER! Bought this two weeks ago. It has all the features on paper but in real life they don't work well. The camera shoots pictures that are grainy. The video is the worst I have seen in a phone. The design is very old. As opposed to the D500. I'm going back to the shop to return this piece of junk. I'm getting the D500. PLEASE DON'T BUY THIS PHONE. I BEG YOU!!! Rating:
Reviewed by Sean on 11-05-2005 I previously had a 6230, I thought getting a 6230i would be a waste of an upgrade, and I had my eyes on the D500, or the 6630 or 6680. Well, 6630 & 6680 are just plain ugly, and too heavy and bulky to be comfortable, and the D500, being a good phone, is simply not as good as the 6230i all round. You cannot beat Nokia for easy UI, fast texting and just general ease of use. Other phones may have better single things, like Samsung having a better colour screen (debatable to the 6230i's brilliant new resolution) or Sony Ericsson having a better camera, so what? If you want the ALL ROUND package, go Nokia, go 6230i, you wont regret it! Rating:
Reviewed by Freddy on 27-04-2005 Wow what a phone. Beats Sony Ericsson into the dust. Even better than the 6230 that I had before, and that was a great phjone too. Rating:
