I have had my Nokia 5800 a year now and still love it and have no desire to change it yet. I am a silver surfer too, my last phone was a Nokia 6210 and I found the 5800 really easy to use. I love the touchscreen, the contacts list (and I CAN see the name of the person calling me)the music player, the large QWERTY keyboard. I love surfing the net when I am out, watching programmes on BBC iPlayer, I can receive emails, I can find out where I am going on the maps, I use Nokia Sportstracker too. In fact the only thing I don't really like is the camera, but I didn't buy the phone for the camera as I have a digital one anyway, but it IS good for taking occasional snapshot videos of my grandson when I don't have my camera with me. I have had a couple of occasions when the phone has frozen on me, but removing the battery and re-inserting it has sorted the problem. I have lost the original styli but bought a set from Ebay much cheaper than Nokia originals and haven't lost any lately. So all in all I still think this phone is really great.

It's an ok phone, but the touch-screen tech isn't up to scratch and the processor often just can't cope. It frequently freezes when going through menus and typing txts, sometimes refuses to let you answer calls, and sometimes (increasingly now and it's not that old) doesn't even ring - it just pings up a missed call. The actual call quality is decent, most problems due to the other person's mobile, but don't even bother thinking the GPS is useful - it needs to sit outside, perfectly still for literally ten minutes each time it tries to acquire a signal and cannot update fast enough to be used for car navigation. Little things like the mp3 player and calendar are also just badly thought out. Overall the phone's not bad enough to replace, but does make me want to punch it at least once a week.

I got this phone last July and it is without a doubt the worst phone ive ever had!The music store and internet has never worked properly, It constantly freezes, gets stuck on vibrate until the battery dies if its on silent, the touch screen needs jabbing constantly to make it work, its slow! it even rings out of tune and to top it off the other day it switched itself to a ringtone ive never heard of and cant find as being available on the phone! ive had it sent off 3 times only to be told there is nothing wrong with it! when i speak to people i know with the same phone they all have experienced the same problems! avoid at all costs! I will never have a nokia ever again, my 3310 when I was 14 was more reliable.

Have had the 5800 since December 2009 and at first i was impressed but sadly the love affair has ended. First to have problems was the camera, it has developed a habit of showing a black view finder image but wont let you take a picture or exit the camera functions, even if you close it down by some miracle it still has the blank screen. Then the next problem was making a call, numerous times it doesn't want to make the call so the phone has to be shut down and restarted to make the call. Finally is the odd connection error messages when updating applications etc, the internet access works prefectly fine but trying to update things just throws up more connection error problems. Music player is superb, not a single fault with that, sound quality is excellent. One final little problem that is trivial but can be a pain is the shape of the phone. For some odd reason whenever i pick it up i've forever got the thing upside down, im guessing it is because i am used to Nokias having their charging ports etc located at the bottom of the phone and now that they are at the top in the squared off area,im guessing its subliminal.Plus the general shape of the phone doesn't lend itself easily to placing the phone on a flat surface to use the built in timer of the camera, you have to prop it up awkwardly.

I've had a replacement phone, and after that a replacement battery and now the little "5800" is not working again ! Reliability is none-existent, and once you sign up to Nokia it insists on connecting through GPRS not my WLAN, so the phone bill goes up and up.

This is a marvellous phone and I don't regret buying it. It's very easy to use and the sound quality on the music player is really exceptional. Camera not as good as it could be and flash is blinding, but it isn't sold as a camera phone. It is subject to occasional freezes but these are easily rectified by switching off and on. Smartphones are little computers so I think you have to expect the odd software glitch. It has stopped streaming on iplayer, but this appears to be an iplayer problem rather than problem with 5800.(www.bbc.co.uk/mobile/live/tv works perfectly. I wish Virgin would hurry would release the latest firmware update as that might sort out some of the, admittedly small, issues. All in all a great phone which will be even better with firmware update and when more apps become available.

I just got this as a free upgrade with T-Mobile - did have Windows Mobile previously which does everything but can be a little sluggish. Love the form factor and lightness on this phone. Resolution is great for web browsing (in landscape). I Like the alarm feature that by turning the phone over it snoozes :-) Had to download a PDF reader and office app so I can read email attachments on the move - all very good - phone get's my email each hour during the day. Comes with a 8Gig card but I've now got a 16Gig one to hold all my music. Sound quality excellent. Only thing I don't like is the PIM - so trialling 3rd party ones. Doesn't cope with Task/To-Do categories (I sync with MS Outlook) which is a bit annoying.

Just before Christmas it went to be 'fixed' as I couldn't log on to the internet and since I have had it back the screen goes all colours of the rainbow and goes blank when texting, even though I have set a ringtone it decides whichever song it feels like every day, facebook and other internet sites are near impossible to use, I am now starting to get 20-30 of the same text from people even though they have only sent it once. Unfortunately I am miffed not only with the phone but also with my network provider who in my opinion is utter rubbish and after 6 years I will be going elsewhere in July. I am looking for a payg phone in the meantime I am that fed up.

The short versions: Would I buy it again? No! Would I buy any Nokia again after? Not sure unless they get their act together. Would I recommend it? If you are after a simple touch screen phone for a reasonable price and don't want to use a lot of applications...yes. My overall experience has been one of having a good phone combined with a lot of frustrating bugs. The review above is fairly accurate. Get used to using the stylus. I didn't use it for ages, I tried to do it iPhone style, but it does make it much quicker and easier. A lot of stuff already mentioned, so I wont bother with that. The battery life is good when not using wifi etc, but chews through the juice then. GPS works well, if tricky to add locations. The diary feature is at best ok. I find it hard to find notes I have written in Outlook when I sync it. Fairly good for webpage browsing, but you must find the best way to do it, ie. use hard writing recognition? qwerty or numeric pad? otherwise your constantly clicking. Music player is decent with good sound, but tricky to play different songs from different artists as with other Nokia phones it seems. Use as a mass storage device it seems very temperamental on some computers for some reason (haven't fixed this bug yet). Camera grainy and very average. My girlfriend's 3.2MP on her nokia (forget the model) is far superior. No PDF reader that is decent, so you cannot magnify and move around a page. I find this frustrating. But I like it for reading ebooks. I got the bluetooth keyboard as I thought it would serve as a good laptop substitute. Ok, perhaps I was naive on that one, but it works ok for emails and the likes.

I LOVE THIS PHONE. As a non techie girlie have to say that it is easy to use, intuitive menu system and very versatile. My latest use today has been geocaching with the new free beta geocaching live application Worked better than my dedicated Garmin GPSr!! You don't need wade through pages of manuals to do the simplest of tasks becauseit is so sensibly laid out.Easy also to personalise. The only thing that would make it better is a repeating tone for missed messages but there is a blinking light anyway. Music and organisation excellent and easy Camera - perfectly adequate both with and without flash Navigation through Ovi maps brilliant and very goood GPSr for other navigating apps. Touch screen and everything else it seems is changeable to suit you. Loads of other good points that others have covered below. Really great phone. One of the biggest issues for me with the N82 was the size of the keypad. The large screen size of the 5800 addresses this for me and things like the virtual keyboard are a dream. Incredibly user friendly - having had this phone for 3 weeks now I would rate it as the best I've had.

It could not be trusted in an emergency because on occassion it has taken me 10mins to actually get it to turn back on. Reluctantly therefore it is being replaced and I have to say good riddance. Symbian may not be the flashiest OS at the mo but S60 5th edition V3 is easy to use, robust and the feature set on the phone puts a lot of more expensive handsets to shame! The webkit based browser is excellent (although being a smartphone you can easily download Opera Mobile or Mini 5 etc.)and wifi is very easy to use as it constantly checks for WLAN connections, the touchscreen is responsive (especially after the V3 firmware update)3d games run fast and smooth(again afer firmware update), media player is great for playing tunes or watching videos or full length movies (after conversion to mpeg-4),camera is good if not outstanding but video capture is excellent at VGA resolution @ 30fps, and probably best of all is the GPS/maps functions which now includes voice guideed turn by turn navigation in the latest versionwhich works brilliantly, maybe well enough to sell your tom tom! I guess that if I had not played with an I-Phone I would have been impressed with the Nokia but it is sluggish to say the least. I am on my second phone and this also suffers from the screen freezing which makes the basic function of answering calls hit and miss. Lastly the phone connects intermittently to the blue tooth in the car. I have had no problems with previous phones which also upload the directory contents effortlessly. With the 5800 it is hit and miss whether it connects, mysterious calls cut in over the car stereo and it has never been able to upload the directory. In short once you get past the touch screen wow factor you have a phone with some lamentable downsides and if you compare it to the I-Phone technology you wil be left feeling you made an impetus decision to buy the 5800.

OK, Ive had this phone for a year or so now, and in that time its never given me any problems. Its superb, and now there is no reason not to get it because ovi maps has just been made free. That is, you get a fully comp sat nav system to use (with voice guidance) whether you are driving or walking! There's still plenty of interest in this phone, judging by many many phone websites (gsmarena etc). Just bought a good pair of in-ear phones for it (denon ac360s)@£32 and am amazed at how little the person sitting next to you can hear at full volume! Phone manufacturers really need to bundle a decent set of earphones with their phones - when will they learn?! Look down the list for my earlier reviews. All in all, pretty much the perfect phone + music player + sat nav tool. Kills 3 birds with 1 stone. I've never understood why people carry a phone & ipod around with them; the sound on this phone makes an ipod redundant.

Firstly I have to say that this is a fantastic website - I have used it everytime I choose a new phone and have yet to be disappointed with my choice. This time is no different...! I was trying to choose between this and the iphone and finally chose the Nokia and I am SO glad that I did! Set up was amazingly easy, within an hour I had 6gb of music uploaded, emails coming in, contacts all sorted etc. Battery life is great and I can go for more than 24 hours without charging even when I'm using it non stop. My sister has an iphone and I've played around with it a lot but I have to say I prefer the Nokia by far and battery life is far superior. Yes there are some minor, minor downsides to the Nokia (USB cover difficult to get off, battery hard to get out, phone perhaps slightly more plasticky than I would have liked) but the advantages of this phone way outweigh any downsides and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it over the iphone. I haven't had a single freeze moment etc. It behaves perfectly. First time I've given a phone a 5 star rating too...! My recommendation - STOP HESITATING AND GO GET ONE!!

I got it just 2 weeks ago and have been loving every bit of it ever since. I don't see much use of the plectrum stylus as it does nothing except for lying in the box (it's cute, though). I use the stylus for the paint application (yes, for a die-hard doodler, it's an extreme essential). The upgrade to firmware V40 brought in kinetic scrolling to messaging, etc and I think it should have been the case with the main menu too. I don't see any reason why it should deserve anything less than a 5 star : )

Do not get this phone! I had it less than a month and problems started. It does not like receiving or sending text messages, the phone will constantly vibrate when I receive a text however, will not let me open the text or even turn it off, the only way to resolve this is by taking out the battery. I thought I had just received a it of a duff phone, but I have now had it replaced with a brand new phone of the same model, the replaced phone has now been repaired three times and it still does the same. Apparently the 5800 has this common fault on it. Save your money and get a decent phone!

I have had this phone for almost a year, it has its faults but all in all its pretty good. The main problem it has it how much it has slowed down over time. Just accessing the menu tends to take a little while for it to consider and the screen goes black while its doing this. Infrequently it freezes up while in the process of this, which hs become annoying but phones arent built to last any more! Also it has built up a blotchy mark beneath the screen, but I don't know whether this is just down to how i have handled it etc and dust has just collected? Any ways, I have enjoyed this phone, but I will definately be upgrading it at the end of my current contract.

I believe now this phone is one I do regret. The battery life time is too much too bare im also on 2g. It crashes when online. The phone either crashes or freezes out the blue. When im charging it or having it around the house and put it off standby lines appear and i have to fiddle with it to make them disappear. Memory space appears to not be enough for the phone to function or download anything. When it streams its slow then crashes. I just got it and have less on it than my last phone which has less memory and had no problems with that one. I suppose it depends on where you buy it. But with that calender moves forward info from previous dates to present dates on the calendar. There is no emergency button to turn off music when your out the music page. Games have crash pauses through while playing them. Apart for that its a okay phone.:)

After reading about the 5800, I thought to myself I might give it a go. I'd been using Sony Ericsson for a while, so a change was in the cards. I bought mine just before Xmas, but the first one I bought was a dud, even the T-Mobile shop where I live couldn't fix it. They did advise trying a software download, but that didn't work. I went back to them and they came up trumps, with a new phone, which works. The music player is better than the SE, and the touch screen is great to use, with the enclosed stylus, or your hands. I think that the iphone has got some serious competition on its hands with this phone. P.S. The only reason the phone hasn't got a 5 star rating from me was the first one I bought was a dud, and it took a few days to get a new one, but that was not T-mobile's fault. It was just that it was Xmas at the time.

Apart from the mapping software everything is rubbish. If you dont quit every application after use it flogs the memory until you run out of memory. You have to quit every tiny thing every time. The music system is average compared to ericsson in quality and the EQ is a waste of time. The lock button on the side is really annoying and clumsy to use.The camera is the worst I have ever seen, VGA quality and I am being kind. By the time you negotiate the alarm to switch off the screen, it has already switched itself off. I lost over 45 contacts and two albums because the software is incapable of proper file transfer. It freezes, the time loses 10-15 minutes per week, it has had a fault where it kept adjusting the volume by itself, it randomly decides not to recognise the memory card until you take it out and reinsert it, and the final straw was the lcd cracking from overheating. All of these faults seem to be fairly common and the nokia repairers even told me that they are aware of these common issues. I went back to my good old n95 8gig, at least it was reliable!

All well at first, then phone shut down when playing music I had just downloaded. Happened three times so bless Orange, sent me a new one and the problems started. Phone wouldn't talk to my PC and the music downloaded was now locked out on licence. Phone kept prompting me to buy a licence from the Nokia store. Spoke to Orange who made it Nokia's problem. Long time on phone to Nokia on three occasions. Replacement phone was not a comes with music despite being in exactly the same box as the first phone. Back to Orange for a third time. Success, I have been told to sent the phone back and re order something else. Beware buying more than one handset for the music store in the same family. Nokia will not let more than one 5800 sinc to a PC My daughter also has one of these and Nokia will not let both phones use my PC. Anyway problem solved by Orange and their customer care. Stick to your guns and they will help. The phone wasn't as good as I thought after reading all the reviews. Qwerty keyboard good, but I had to use the plectrum or stick to text. Very long winded process coming from a Sony Ercisson, so that was something to get used to. Sound system was excellent, although to get to any files was a pain. Won't be choosing this again so back to the reviews to see what I can get.

I should start by saying I have used this site for the last several years to help choose my upgrade and it has never failed me. This phone is overall great and a vast improvement on my old phone, the LG Viewty which I thought was pretty good. Therefore I thought it's only right that I do offer some feedback on a problem I had. My phone all of a sudden stopped collecting information in the call log, no dialled, missed or received numbers being stored. I called orange and their tech team said a factory reset is the only way to fix it, which they did over the phone after saving everything to the memory card. Thankfully this fixed the issue and I notice my phone seems faster since the reboot. Only other issue I've had twice in 3 months is that it froze when on the internet and got pretty hot, but turning it off and back on resolved that one. Battery time is really good and generally a good touch screen choice!

Music player is great. WiFi internet access works fine. Battery life is good (unlike the LG Viewty KU990!). Only little thing: you should be aware that although it has a GPS antenna, this only works when online, and navigator software costs extra (but maps can be downloaded for free). after my rant previously i managed to get a replacement 5800 from O2. music downloads were much faster which was great except that the nokia music store does not list my debit card as a method of payment and i do not have a credit card (and never will) Camera issues remain so i know at least that this camera is shocking and anyone who says that it's good is dillusional. Every day since i got the replacement it turns off upto 10 times a day. not a re-boot just turns off. this is not acceptable. Yesterday two more things started to go wrong with the phone. firstly the call history log cleared and now no longer shows any calls. I had 2 missed calls yesterday but when i clicked (tapped) to see them it said no calls logged or words to that effect. Next problem is messaging.. i send a text.. don't get a reply i wait and wait for a reply and then i send another text to find out what's going on. as that text is sending i get 2 or 3 texts in my inbox. it seems that by me sending a message it kinda unclears a blockage in the system and allows messages which have been sent to me to come through. O2 have been contacted AGAIn and they have said that the repairs people will be in touch. soft re-sets do not correct any of the problems

I'm exchanging for a Nokia 6303 (and getting my price plan cut by £5 a month) because I want an easy to use mobile. I purchased mine back in April after reading upon Nokia changing microphone suppliers but they haven't done any thing about the design flaw with the casing. For those who don't know the top right of the phone a small gap appears and can some times gradually get bigger over time requiring a repair or replacement and the replacement had exact same problem and was finally able to get a refund. I've read quite a lot of bad comments about this phone! 1) no caller ID displayed on incoming calls 2) dodgy touch screen 3) slow response times to commands (typical symbian software!) 4) fiddly poxy tiny keyboard which requires two hands to type a text message (errr...no thanks!) 5) The camera/picture quality is getting a right old slating on these reviews. Someone on here also mentioned that they thought NOKIA were losing the plot....I have to agree! I remember when Nokia's WERE Nokia's!! Whenever you start a text message you are given a screen with some blank lines and a flashing cursor... which you then have to click to get to the keypad. Why not just go straight to keypad! Other niggle: Incoming text messages are timestamped with the time my handset receives them rather than the time they were sent. REALLY daft! I switched on my phone just now and replied to a text timestamped today. Turns out I was replying to a message sent at the weekend. THIS IS SO DUMB IT'S UNBELIEVABLE! Media folders blank out top half of screen, so that you are scrolling through a list with half the visible items that it could have. Result: Moving the scrollbar a single pixel whizzes the items past faster than you can see. FAIL! Some onboard apps can be backed out of with an Exit button (in fact they have to be if you don't want them running in the background) and some simply don't. The much touted social network status line in the contacts bar is another big fail. Trying to get Facebook on it is a fortnightly trawl through tech forums to see if some bright spark has worked out how to do it with the latest FB version. The official App Store will happily take money for apps incompatible with your phone, despite having set it up with handset type. This is just lazy greed. Admin unresponsive to refund request. Really common characters like "(" and ")" are buried in the keypad interface (smilies anyone?) I may be alone in this but this Nokia, like several before, gives me a pounding headache within minutes of being switched on. I used iPhone for up to 12 hours a day with no such effects. CONCLUSION: This phone is rubbish, but with proper Bluetooth and a battery that lasts longer than 30 seconds, (and can be changed!) it's still not as bad as the iBrick. er, iPhone.

Have to say intially i was really impressed with this phone and all in all i think the problems i am having are not phone related but software. Several times the screen frees up and locks off then the phone reses itself and all is fine but your off air for several minute and for those people who are on the phone a lot thats not a good thing, Secondly the cover need to be improved, yes you get a cover and its pretty good you can keet the phone in it and hear conversation, good idea in theory as it saves the screen for scratches however to answer the phone you have to take it out of the case there for the idea of being able to listen to calls while in the case becomes pointless. Finally another software issue i believe when multiple calls are coming in and switch between them it seems to activate the loud speaker automatically and you cant turn it off which is pretty annoying if you wnat ot take private calls. All in the the phone is good b ut a result of the software issues i afraind i have to give this phone 3 stars. Just something to consider for all of those ptential buyers

Great phone. Upgraded from the K800 and the camera is certainly as good (I did some comparison shots to check), though not being able to change the default settings is annoying. All in all a very competent phone. Loads of free themes around to suit your tastes (the default looks pretty old fashioned), as well as apps. Highly recommend aMaze if you have unlimited internet package, as it works perfectly with the built-in GPS. Basic things that some other phones get wrong, work well here. So you can listen to music whilst doing loads of other things at once, say. You can organise your menus to your heart's content, including creating a folder structure if you wish. There is no denying that things are still a bit slower by touch screen than with buttons, but I suspect that is the same with all touchscreen phones and to a large extent that reflects how much more you can do. The screen isn't always the most sensitive to pressure by a finger. The lightest touch with a fingernail does the trick every time though, and the plectrum is always quickly to hand if your nails are short. My favourite things are the neat screen lock switch, which is very intuitive and quick to use, and the 3.5mm headphone jack. I've only had this phone 2 weeks, but so far, so very very good.

I have had this phone since April 09 and while i was impressed at first I am very disappointed now. The phone was great and then I had to update the software. This removed the web editing function which, considering we are in a social networking age, is a real let down. No matter how hard I try i cannot get the screen aligned properly, so, to click on the google search button on the google home page i have to click slightly below it. the same can be said for any other link i need to click on. Camera quality is very poor in low light levels and the flash does nothing to improve the situation. downloading music, considering it is designed for such a task, is very poor. I downloaded "The Black Eyed Peas - I gotta Feeling" from the nokia music store and it took an hour. I don't know how long it would take to download a whole album. The messaging function is poor as the system keeps flickering which ends up with you sending half a text or it enters the word you have just written 2 or 3 times. I find it irritating that when creating a new word (one the dictionary doesn't know) that it stores it without asking if you wish to store it. This is especially frustrating if you make a spelling mistake. the screen is very soft and i have often found that the stylus which comes with the phone has left scratches all over the screen. internet connection is terrible most of the time with "cannot perform this function" message comming up. I really feel down about owning this phone especially as my best mate, his wife and his dad have it and do not have any of the issues i have. O2 will do nothing. The phone itself is very good. cant compare to iphone because ive never had one. the only thing that disapoints is the camera. my previous samsung had a 5mp camera and pics were sharp and clear. this is grainy and horrible to view on phone.shame they didnt match the camera o the display capability. mite be interesting to see how they print. many reviews are complaining about phone switching off on own.i havent yet experienced that, but after spending best part of the first day trying out things and exploring the phone, battery did run down to 2 bars from fully charged (7 bars)inside 3 hours. for people like myself who previously only used their phone to make calls and text, its not very clear how to set up email, use gps and a few other apps. (i know it may be very easy, but not for me). do you have to pay to use any of these........? best thing i found for me is the hand written texting. with poor eyesite its easier to write the words with the stylus than try and see minute letters next to very small buttons as on most phones. upto now i have found the touch screen very responsive and the phone starts up and switches applications very quickly. files open and close very rapid. and as yet nothing has fallen off or stopped working. its a real shame about the camera. i was giving a 5* but as i was writing this it occurred to me how long it took to make up my mind to choose this phone, over phones with 5mp or even 8mp. so 4* it is then. if photos arnt your bag you`ll love this phone

I have been exclusively a Nokia mobile phone user for over 10 years and this model is the most able model I've owned. It's an excellent mini web browsing and email tool, works well with BBC iPlayer and Fring, an excellent music player, a good camera (but not too great in poor light), and excellent connectivity options. The application support is good for its Symbian O/S, although I haven't used the iPhone so cannot say if it's better or worse. On the negative side, I feel like I'm constantly charging the phone. It's standby battery life is excellent, but use the phone heavily and it's flat within the working day. Also, the O/S occassionaly freezes requiring a power down and up - hopefully the next firmware upgrade will improve this.

The 5800 is my first touch-screen and first true smart phone so I don't have much to compare it with as regards its rivals. I got a great deal with T-mobile which includes free web n walk which is what I was looking for. You have to press firmly on the resistive touch screen, which I like ... no accidental keying. I've had it about a month now and have just about got to grips with all its features ... which are outstanding! Though I have free web access, it does have a fair use policy so the ability to tap into my wifi network is useful. The only draw back I found was that it's not supported by skype but I got round this by downloading Nimbuzz, which gives me full skype capability without being on the 3 network. It's not the smallest, lightest phone on the market and stick it in a protective case you're almost getting back to the 'bricks' of a few years ago but I suppose that's the cost of having a large screen. All together a brilliant phone, great music, pics and capabilities. I wouldn't hesitate recommending it.

I got this phone about 2 months ago and I ABSOLOUELTY LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!! (please do not be put off this review by that spelling of absoloutely) Its amazing and you should go out and get one now. THE BROWSER The browser is amazing- the web page comes up just like ir does on a computer- whereas in most samsung phones it comes up like a word document or something. Downloading themes, ringtones and stuff like that off the internet is really easy and simple. There are so many free things and you can get great themes. THE SCREEN The screen is really sensitive, but with the great slidy lock on the side, you never find yourself calling random people randomly. The two touch things doesnt bother me abit and its only a few menus. Infact it comes in handy in some menus because you dont want to wasye ALL THAT TIME clicking back and stuff. Though saying that the phone is really quick to flip screens and takes hardly any time for the screen to flip round when you turn it on its side. The screen si extremely bright and colourful. THE "FEEL" The nokia 5800 Ddoes have a SLIGHT plasticy feel but doesnt effect the AMAZINGNESS of using the phone. Its is a little thicker than other touchscreen phones but it had an amazing camera on the back and a webcam on the front. It also contains alot more AMAZINGNESS than other touchscreen phones. THE CAMERA The camera in this phone is SUPER! It had great autofocus and the flash is very good too. It gives you lots of differnt shooting optiosn. eg. landscape, sport. The gallery is very easy to view photos on too. SETTINGS The nokia 5800 is easy to set up. Also you can easily cahnge your settings from silent, to general or any of the other options. Email is easy, but most email site have a easy download for smartphones so you can view you emails easiy eitherway. You can easily add contacts and edit them too. USABILITY I find this phone incredibly easy to use. Its my first touchscreen phone and my first Nokia ( mind you I've only had two phones, my previous one being a D9100i) and I settled straight into it. Its very quick as I have alreday told you and all the buttons are easy to see and press. However, my mum frequently gets frustrated with hers- she is not very open to new technology. She is currently trying to plug in my sisters samsung charger into her nokia 5800 shouting " wheres the socket?". Yes, so maybe not good for middle-aged woman. But im 12 and it works great for me. MESSAGING This is easy too with the 4 different types of typing; Full Screen Qwerty, small QWERTY, alphanumeric and handwriting. My favourite is Full screen QWERTY which is quick and efficient. My mum mainly uses alphamumeric after having trained herself into it after many years. The handwriting is fairly good at recognisng letters- but it doesnt recognise joined up hand writing, which is how I am used to writing. The small QWERTY is finickity and hard to use. All sending options are easily acsessible and so is picking WHO you want to send that message too. MUSIC I think it is the best phone for music in the world- atleast when it was first released. The headphones are amazing and TWIN STEREO SPEAKERS!!! which gives amazing sound ( which I compared to my mums ipods speaker stand and was just as good!). It comes with a 8GB memory card so you have plenty space to store all your favourite tunes. Also, the nokia music store is just brilliant and simple to accsess and use. The nokia store suprised with its stock. It has almost anything I look for! Overall, as you can probably tell, I ADORE this phone. It is just as good as the iphone if not better, and about 3 times less the amount. Its slick and easy to use (once you get the hang of it - i keep telling my mum). The screen is sensitive and bright. JUST AMAZING! Thanks for reading, Ava

You can even subscribe for one day when you need it for just 2 euros. Even the map updates are a free download via your PC. nevel get lost again. Brilliant! I have waited for a month before reviewing the Nokia 5800 I feel this length of time gives me a opportunity to fully teat the unit, I upgraded to the 5800 before I read any reviews on-line, now after reading some user reviews I thought I had made a massive mistake as some users really slatted the device, the main gripes seemed to be poor responses to the touch pads, Freezing, and poor battery life, so let me deal with those items first , the touch pad is a brilliant piece of thinking by the Nokia engineers and if you think about it is totally logical some reported confusion as sometimes you needed one click others takes two click to acess a function, well lets look at the logic, you need one click when you access a menu that has a drill down I.E. another menu underneath the one you are choosing, but when you get to the bottom menu and you next step is to select something for real the system asks for two clicks, what a safe guard how many time have I taped on somethi ng I didn't want to tap on so top marks for this piece of design, Freezing none after a months use and I have pushed the chip to see if I can get a freeze but none so far, Battery Life brilliant the best of my many smart phones only need to charge after 4 days my typical usage is about 10 calls and texts in and out per day 1 hour on Wi-Fi one hour on 3G, 2 hours on blue tooth, 2 hours using the FM radio, and 1 hour on GPS, all in a typical day so no complaints about battery from me, now to the day of delivery delivered by carrier at 2.12 pm, set up, out of the box came with a fully charged battery switched on, set up program started, date time county just a tap on the screen to select , asked for my email details gave it my Virgin details and my Gmail details, gave me the option of connecting by 3G or my home network which it found on switch on, chose my home network it asked for my log in stuff configured it and connected set up Virgin first the set up Gmail connected and d ownloaded my emails for me, I then made a quick call and sent a text just to test it worked, now plugged the phone into my laptop (had Nokia suit already installed on Laptop) chose Sync and the phone was updated with my contacts , calender. and tasks, time now 2.26 so it took 14 minutes to configure the 5800 with the software doing the bulk of the work, the easiest set up ever for me, as after this short time my emails work, my contacts including pictures work, my calender is set up. my Wi-Fi is working all in all a good experience top class phone can't see what all the negative stuff is about maybe some competitors scribes are downing the phone :-)

This is not a 5 star phone. It has far too many flaws for that. The phone is well featured and if it was better executed could have been an iphone killer. The pro's. Great speaker sound, excellent screen quality, plays videos brilliantly, easy to view mobile websites (they look great), screen ain't that hard to text on. But here come the con's. Firstly it really annoys me that if you hold it how you would hold a phone the signal drops by 3 bars, sometimes will even lose a signal. Also its far too keen to switch to 2G which is too slow for the browser. Browser doesn't cope well with full websites and opera mini doesn't work properly on touch. And thats the problem. You have to use fiddly scroll bars in too many places that it ends up being awkward to use. Nokia haven't adapted symbian properly for touch. I mean to select and move photo's to a new folder takes forever as you have to click on one, scroll down and click mark picture on every single one! So I'm torn between this and my 6220 classic. Every now and then I swap to the 6220 and see how quick it was, how much better camera was, how well it held a signal, the GPS is even quicker, and how much easier it was to text on outdoors. I think I'll sell this and keep the 6220. Any ideas what to get next. I'd like big screen (doesn't have to be touch), GPS, and good web browsing. Plus the camera must be usable inside, yet it must fit comfortably in a pocket. Its a tough list of priorities and so far everything I've tried fails in some way compared to 6220 classic.

Summary An outstanding phone. The only significant problem I have is that I am using it so much the battery won't last. The battery if phenomenally fast to recharge though. I used to take my laptop with me to stay in contact/web access: no where as much now. I have not used an iPhone but took to the touch screen straight away and rarely do I need the pointer. It is interesting that Gravity, a Twitter client, has a very very sensitive scroll but this has been written specifically for the S60 operating system. The extra screen space makes a huge difference to the navigation, web browsing, video, email, document editing etc. It was available on just about the lowest tariff three offer - amazing. I might be just that they were trying to keep me as a customer. Reception The basic phone reception has been very good including the 3G reception. The ability to link in with WiFi makes a huge difference and is essential as I am using this phone and the web in a way I never did before. The phone is provided by 3 so the default was to use their 3G network ( well I cant blame them for that!). The web browser did get confused in where the 3G signal and WiFi signal were competing ( I wanted to keep to the WiFi), however these is an option to be prompted as to which network you want - much better. Web Browser The web browser works very well, but occasionally I get into a tangle with the navigation, however I am trying to use it more like a laptop browser than earlier mobile phone browsers. The biggest problem is with web pages detecting it is a mobile and then giving me a cut down web page. Playing Flash works very well and have not as yet hit any problems, including on YouTube. Video I love the BBC iPlayer it works so well on the 5800 and the playback quality is really good. On one programme still images were presented and you could just detect how the image was being scanned, but I have not detected this problem elsewhere. Video works well either on downloading or direct from the site. Camera The Camera is ok, not as bad as I feared ( I had just used a Sony C903 and that was really good), just don't expect too much from it. If you want to capture an amusing moment on a walk it does the job fine. Music Audio quality is good and you get a decent volume from the speakers as you would expect. Business Uses No this is not a business phone but it does the job well. I soon had to purchase QuickOffice and Adobe Reader as I was started to use it for serious email work. Having to buy Adobe Reader did irk me somewhat having got used to it being provided free on PCs and I gather on older, non-touch, S60 Nokia's. Sometimes the more limited processor speed does impact on the editing of word, excel and powerpoint documents. There are limitations in that you cannot embed multi-media into the powerpoint and I don't think you can have some of the fancy animation. But we are talking a phone here. As I mentioned above - my laptop often stays at home now. Email. The email client works very well with POP accounts ( I have not tested Exchange compatibility) and QuickOffice integrates well for editing/reading MS Office documents. The one thing I miss is the ability to add rules as I do on my laptop to aid the filing of emails as they arrive. You can buy other email clients however. Text Entry The phone has a conventional alphanumeric, large QWERTY, small QWERTY and handwriting. I use them all but have moved to the small QWERTY most of the time which I use the edge of my thumb fingernail on. I have not tried out the handwriting. This is a quick as I can ever go on a mobile, maybe quicker with the mini-qwerty now that I am used to it, so do not worry about the touch screen. Navigation & Layout I like the navigation and find it very easy to use. Not as elegant as say the SE903 but I particularly like the integration of the latest email, to do list and appointments - on the home screen. Suddenly the calendar function has become useable rather than lost under the options as in every other mobile I have used. The layout is not very configurable however and you have to choose between shortcuts to applications ( maximum 4 ) or shortcuts to contacts (max 4) on the home screen. It is possible to order new themes from the phone but I have not done so. Downloads Nokia Ovi store is awful and clunky. I have not used the iPhones app store but it cannot be as bad as this. Much easier to access it from a laptop ( ironically about the only website where this is true). Migrating Contacts and iSync Despite having a Nokia before this the SIM Card contacts import was a mess. All names came us as SURNAME;FIRSTNAME/1 etc. Synchronise with your laptop contact software first. iSync on the Mac works very well, just download the software from Nokia's website. multimedia software Nokia provide multimedia software for transferring files between PC/Mac and phone. Yes the Mac - hooray. Can I get it to work in a sensible way? It does work however and does integrate with both iTunes and iPhoto. Sorry guys I cannot comment about its use with PC's

You get more than your moneys worth this phone which is why I have given it 5 stars. The only slightly negative thing is on a sunny day its sometimes quite hard to see the screen. But it still beats all other touchscreen phones in its price range, and even some above. Plus if you read MINANTRA's review, hes actually comparing it to phones double the price and full smartphones like the asus that aren't even out yet and will probably cost atleast £450 sim free anyway.

Only way seems to be to syncronise with my ols phine. Also, the voice command is not functional - have a ! on it. Any ideas. Otherwise really good. Well, to start off about this phone, its the best piece of equipement ive ever had. The phones calling features are good, since its a phone, and the audio is very nice and clear. The 3.2 inch touchscreen has a very high resolution witch makes for very nice colors (it has up to 16million colors - geez thats allot) and with the phone turned to be landscape then the aspect ratio is 16:9 (the same as HD :D) and makes for superb video watching and viewing pictures. This is a Simbian operated phone and the thing you have to remember is that it works allot similar to a computer. You do get the ocational glitch but nothing severe. The other thing people always, well not complain about, is the user interface. They always say Nokia havent build up the S60 5th edition from scratch and only took the 3rd edition and tuned it for Touch interface. The thing you have to remember is that its not up to Nokia to make the operating system here, its Simbian themselves. Simbian is a comp any on their own and also makes operating systems for other phone companies alwell e.g. the Samsung G810 runs on Simbian aswell. People also seem to be complaining about the 1 tap, or 2taps the phones needs for some areas in the menu. They are just dumb. This works allot like a computer. Some things like a music file for instance needs 2 taps to open, just like a computer. Just to give you an example, if you wanted to send that file and tapped it once to select it, it would start playing the file instead of just highlighting it in order to go options and then send via Bluetooth or whatever. To get to the package contents, its awesome. There isnt an accessory you will have to buy in the shop because it comes with it all. You get a prtective case, and USB cable, 2 pice earphones (one part is like a wired remote and the other piece is the earphones themselves), a cable to connect the phone to a TV, a lanyard with a plectrum - guitarpick type thing - , and of course 2 stylusses. (one as a spair) and obviously the charger and the monster 8GB memorycard witch ships IN the phone already. One thing that isnt quite up to standard is the camera. Then again, this phone doesnt sell because its a camera phone, but its called a Nokia ExpressMusic for obious reasons. Nokia launched a new Firmware update that i heard ajusts some of the camera features and makes it take better pictures, but sadly i havent try this myself. This phones is truely a music phone, and since i got this my poor iPod Classic is so allone. This phones batery lasts about 10 hours longer with listening to music than an iPod so why spend another $250 on a EXTRA gadget that isnt as well as your current phone. My verdickt is that this is really a great piece of work from Nokia`s side and can truely recomend it to anyone. GO FOR IT TODAY!!

Just a note: my flatmate got the blue one on t-mobile, and they charge him to use the gps system! It seems that 02 don't (who I'm with). I've been using the GPS on and off for 7 mths now and it works just fine. I think orange are the worst for this because they have installed their own sat nav s/w - and charge for it too. Don't fall into this trap if you are getting this phone to use as a sat nav too! Just to reiterate: sound 4/5 - very clear, has a gfx equaliser, could do with being a little louder at max volume. Why would you need a separate ipod? interface 4/5 - v21 fw makes the phone appreciably faster. camera 2/5 - only works well under good lighting conditions, rubbish for anything else (nokia, put a xennon flash and 5mp cam in the replacement 5800) battery life 5/5 - excellent. better than expected.

Had this phone for about 6 months now, and although it is a great phone, make sure you DO NOT GET THE RED ONE, as for some unknown reason, if you have the red Nokia 5800, you cannot update the firmware. So I'm stuck with the first firmware Nokia released for this phone and cannot update it, which is very frustrating as the newer firmware makes the touchscreen much more responsive and stops it freezing. My girlfriend just got the same phone, but the silver one, with the updated firmware, and it's like a completely different phone! It's a terrific phone, and for £180 on PAYG, that's a lot better than blowing over £300 on the iPhone! I have dropped it twice on concrete, and it still works like a charm! It's a nicely put together device with a much more smooth OS than what was on the N96 or N85 (which are not touchscreen and are Symbian 9.2) and feels more finished with added theme effects. The sound quality...........SUPERB!!!!! It sounds much more clear, even through the loudspeakers which deliver considerable bass for its size. It's easy to integrate with your PC and no matter which folder on the mem. stick you put any song(s) in, it fetches it all and saves it on the music/video/photo library. and I am impressed with the startup speeds as well, it is quite fast. The WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities are outstanding. This is an excellent device, which doesn't choke your wallet to death unlike the iPhone, and has a lot more features than the iPhone. The 5800's firmware is open-source (unlike Apple's proprietary OS X) so it is always constantly improved and so it can also sport a vast amount of other features. Once again, it's a great-value buy and can satisfy.

Had this phone for the past 5 months and not impressed with it. Infact, I sold it last week and have replaced it with a Nokia 6700. The touch screen is my main complaint, as well as the phone constantly crashing. The touch screen is not very responsive with the user needing to press the screen several times to get a response. It can be very frustrating texting, easy to press the wrong key on the screen, and because of this, the phone stores a long of mis-spelt words into its dictionary which can be incredibly annoying. The screen also gets dirty constantly, and the raised edge aruond the screen gathers dust. The phone software has a lot of bugs and frequently crashes, trying to read an email or going back to a webpage, the phone may exit the application. The stylus holder will eventually come lose and the stylus starts to come out whenever you use it, and the automatic switching between landscape and portrait can really get on your nerves, when just opening a text, or trying to do something on the phone when you dont want it to auto rotate. The music player is good however, though it can take a while to open music tracks on occasion, and I found the volume a bit quiet even on full. The stereo speakers were excellent though. It was a good first attempt by Nokia, but they need to perfect the art of the touch screen as Apple have done. For now I am going to stick with push button phones, they are less frustrating to use! Especially in sunlight, another area the 5800 was annoying, trying to see what buttons to press with daylight reflecting off the large screen. If you are familiar and happy with touch screen phones then you may like the phone, but if you value your sanity, stick with traditional button phones!

The slide's camera got a 5G rating on ch5's "The Gadget Show" a while back, which even outperformed some 5mp cameras - so what has gone wrong, and will there be a firmware update to fix it? A lovely feature of this camera is that you can replace a sat nav with it (works very well in the UK). The main problems i had were the screen when you turned the phone sideways to text with the qwerty touchscreen keypad it would suddenly flip the screen back the other way then when you turned the phone the other way it would flip again. It frequently froze and the screen went blank for long periods my friend had exactly the same problems it drove me mad !!!!Texting whichever way was a nightmare because the touch screen just wasn't up to it and letters were missed out whenever you didnt press hard enough. I was so looking forward to owning this phone but wished i'd never bothered.

Reviews like the one made by Phil below (25/07) bug me a bit - his problem is obviously a one off yet it is written like this is a fault on every phone. For the record, I have had absolutely no problems downloading or using Googlemail/maps, or any other applications for that matter, and nor have the 2 other members of my family with this phone. People say the camera on it is 'only' 3.2 megapixels but the Carl Zeiss technology is excellent and I get better shots on this than my sister does on her 8mp Samsung Tocco Ultra phone, and the video quality is outstanding. Anyone worried about the screen keys being too small to text on need not worry because they are pretty large, even compared to a normal keypad. I can text really quickly and even faster if I use the stylus. This functions really well in all the important areas - excellent camera, an mp3 player with amazing sound quality, and also as a PHONE (remember that's what they're really for?). This is the best phone I have ever owned, and I've had loads of them over the years, plus I'm pretty hard to impress. It will take something pretty spectacular to make me upgrade from this in 17 months time.

I love this phone, had it for three months. No scratches or cracks and i have dropped it a couple of times. Feels very solid and not at all delicate but does creak and feels very plasticky. The back is made from a flimsy plastic and the rim around the front of the device is annoying. If Nokia had used a capacitive screen, the stylus would be eliminated, and therefore the back would be thinner (because theres no stylus stuck in there). I dislike the rim because dust and just bits of dirt and stuff get stuck under it. If it had been removed from the design it would look far better are probably be a few millimeters thinner too. Those are just my problems with this phone though. Apart from that theres nothing wrong with it. Messaging is fantastic although i cannot set up email to work correctly. Music player and transfering files works fantastically. Ovi store has plenty free apps and plenty paid apps and games and such. Definetly a phone worth checking out. Wifi has been a fantastic addition and makes web browsing so much better. Videos are outstanding if you encode/convert them right. 16:9 screen is great with no problems apart from i wish it was capacitive. My dad has a Samsung Tocco and although his is far more sensitive to his touch i prefer the 5800 because of wifi, apps and the general S60 OS that makes it a smartphone worth buying. Great phone, definetly worth checking out. Glad I bought it

I upgraded on contract to the Nokia 5800. I was very impressed with it at first, and loved all the different apps and the accelerometer. But from the start I had problems with the internet and the applications. They crashed a lot and then within 5 days, the phone wouldn't let me make any phone calls. So I exchanged it for another 5800, and again straight away it kept crashing and the applications just wouldn't open. I wouldn't recommend this phone to anyone. The music quality was really good, but that wasn't the main reason why I wanted it. I had problems with almost every feature, and found it was generally a really slow phone! Eventually swapped it for a Nokia N85 and so far I haven't had any major problems with it!

The Nokia 5800 is a well made phone, no doubt. What is absolutely shocking is that is delivered with a firmware bug that prevents users from downloading applications such as Google Mail/Maps etc. If you try you get the message "certificate eexpired" and the application will not install. One has to perform extensive tasks including completely resetting the phone to overcome the issue. It is hard to believe that Nokia feel they can get away with this in the face of products like the iphone. Don't buy until Nokia finally get their act together.

Had no complaints with the Renoir but for usabaility the 5800 blows it out of the water. the interface is both faster (impressive when considering that it is a smart phone) and more responsive. Voice clarity during calls is superior to the LG, Battery life is on par obviously the camera is a step down (from 8mp to 3.2mp) however i'm not much of a snapper anyway plus the 5800 with it's Carl Zeiss optics can still take decent shots. overall am highly impressed with the 5800, and it's sales package(including tv out cable, stereo headphones, 8 gb memory card & protective case etc) is second to none.

I got this phone as a free upgrade from Orange to replace my faithful Samsung U600. I've had it a few days now. I was worried I wouldn't be able to text very well on it, but I actually find it easier because the touchscreen 'buttons' are actually bigger than on most phones and very responsive. I haven't had any problems with the sensitivity of the screen at all. At home I usually use the stylus to stop getting fingerprints all over the screen but the plectrum is pretty useless. Out and about I just use my fingers and can write and send a message with one hand as the phone is very slim compared to, for example, the N97 or some of the Tocco phones. Sound quality from the speakers is excellent, really loud! The video quality is amazing too. The camera is, to me, really good - but then anything is good compared to my last phone. It takes photos really quickly, in seconds, whereas my samsung took nearly 30 seconds - I think it was broken! Yes, the 5800 is only 3.2 megapixels and a little grainy, but it is acceptable quality for taking quick shots of friends etc, and after all it is a phone and not a camera. The secondary camera on the front of the phone is a bit dodgy...but I'm not in the habit of taking lots of self portraits anyway. The internet is user friendly and pretty fast, although I wish I'd known that I need to hold down the red button to disconnect from the internet else it runs in the background - I think. Not sure on this one. Picks up wifi which is always useful. Only 4 stars because the camera is good but not outstanding. Also, as an afterthought, I find the stylus a little uncomfortable after using it for a while. The battery life isn't brilliant either, but then I do mess around on it a lot when I'm bored at work. (And write reviews, like now.) Charges quickly though. All in all an excellent phone which I'm really happy with and recommending to everyone I know who is thinking of upgrading. You won't be disappointed.

Not a bad effort. Speaker quality is excellent for a mobile, the screen looks great indoors and browsing is good. GPS is also more sensitive than previous nokias and wifi reception is great. But and its a big but, sometimes it goes on go slow taking ages to respond, 3g reception is poor, and its just to fat to fit comfortable in your trowser pocket. The camera is pretty rubbish. Stills/video's no where near the quality of my old 6220 classic or the N95. To sum up. Good effort but its not an iphone, the screen is too awkward to use, can barely read it outdoors, and resistive so you need to press down. Its not like using an iphone. Does everything you can think off, more than even an iphone 3G, but it doesn't do it well. Needs a faster processor, and an operating system more designed for touch. I have symbian on other phones and virtually the same only works far easier on a conventional keypad. Don't hate it, but it has made me realise how good my old nokia 6220 class ic is. Its that phone i will be keeping in the end. Its smaller, yet packs a better camera, faster operating speed, and a nice conventional keypad for texting. The screens nowhere near as good for browsing but I've got my ipod touch for that.

It has some really nice features such as the lock key on the side of the phone, the 3.5mm audio jack so you can upgrade to some decent earphones. So far I've downloaded lots of apps and themes for this phone with no problems. The music sound good on the speakers and through the earphones. I like the Nokia maps, I've downloaded Google maps too! Here's a tip - read the reviews below, and check out the quality of the reviews themselves. The guys complaining about this phone hardly ever write anything, and often can't spell. Having been so disappointed with the LG Viewty Smart that I sent back (see my review on 29th June) I’m absolutely delighted with this phone. It doesn’t have the 8MP camera of the Viewty Smart and the calculator isn’t as good. It’s also a shame Nokia didn’t give the 5800 a 5MP camera which I would have preferred. Some of the indoor photos with this phone are slightly grainy although not really a problem for me thus far. Aside from that in every other respect this phone is streets ahead of the LG and considering the sim free prices I’ve seen on the internet put this phone around £130 cheaper I just can’t fault it. For it’s price tag the software is excellent, the touch screen works like a dream and it does everything I want it to. Everything on the phone seems to work physically completely perfect and reliably so far. I love the fact that it has a little stylus, that slides neatly into the side of the phone, for operating the touch screen which makes operating the screen so much easier than trying to use fingers. I can’t actually understand why that isn’t standard on all touch screen phones. Another plus for me is that it hasn’t got T9 predictive texting. It’s dead easy to connect to your PC either in PC suite mode for use with the Nokia software which you have to download or in Mass Storage mode to easily copy files to and from the MicroSD card. I haven’t tried the music software on top end phones like the N97 and iPhone but this is the best music player I’ve ever had on a phone which makes it dead easy to create playlists and sort them into any order I like. As other people have said the internet application is great and makes it dead easy to surf the web. The map application also looks like it works quite well and could prove very useful although I haven’t had a chance to try it properly yet. I don’t often rave about things like mobile phones but for it’s price tag compared to the more expensive phones the 5800 really stands out for me. If you don’t want to go for the most expensive phones you can’t beat this. Well done Nokia.

Well what can I say, I am realy impressed with the phone, so much realy clever functions on it and very easy to use. The touch screen is not too sensative as I had been afraid of at all. You have to touch things twice to make sure that you don't do things accidentally. The speed that you can text is amazing. The battery lasts a long time, but then I only use it for calls, texting, and the odd photo. The reception is also very good, my old 6500 slide would not get a signal in my house but the 5800 has two or three bars, and both were on the Orange network. Fairly large onscreen keypad for texting means its easier than using my ipod touch for typing things in. 8GB memory supplied on a card, so you can use another if it gets full. Nokia maps. Its great for walking around finding somewhere new if you buy the optional walk license. Not so good as a sat nav to use in the car and as that costs £80 a year for a license, do yourself a favour and get a garmin or tomtom. Price - I got it on ebay for £140! Thats £160 less than an iphone. Cons - The touchscreen is not as sensitive as iphone and some more advanced functions really need the stylus to operate sucessfully. I have had it on contract sent the first one back and they replaced it the next day with another Nokia 5800, same problems and the phone company said they have had loads sent back because of the same problems, they are now replacing it with a Samsung tocco. Would recommend the Nokia 5800 to anyone.

Its great that you can add applications to the phone from the nokia website. The only downside i have found so far is the battery life, but thats probably because i have been playing with the phone non-stop since i got it. I would recommend this phone as an alternative to the iphone, as its camera is far better and i beleive it is on the same level, plus everyone has iphone's!!

This phone is a total bargain. I got one free on a £25/month contract at it's brilliant. Great screen (640*360), lovely interface, loads of apps, music player is top notch, GPS, 3.5mm jack, 8gb memory, wifi, decent battery life, a nice compact size. The list goes on and on. A lot of the moans I've read are the usual "it's not as good as the iphone, why didn't they add x, y and z". Why can't some people accept that not every phone has to be a Rolls Royce. For me, this was way cheaper than an iphone and on a network I want, and it does everything the iphone does and more, albeit in a slightly cheap looking package. Only downsides are the resistive touch screen which works fine but is not as smooth as the iphone, the camera which is rubbish in low light, and the divx player which will only play movies converted to a specific format. Despite all these things, I still give it 5 for offering so much in a cheap phone.

The touchscreen is good as well, i hardly use the stylus which came with it as i can text comfortably. I dont understand why some people say that the camera isnt so good? I think it is good for a 3.2 mp, and the flash is very bright as well. The battery on the the fone lasts you long enough. I absolutely adore the mp3 player as the sound quality is very clear and loud. The only annoyance is the lock button which you keep having to slide to unlock the fone... but that is minor. I've had this phone for approximately one week now. I decided on it mainly down to the excellent reviews it has received (especially the superb ones on this very site) and so far I haven't been disappointed in any way. I'd been after an upgrade for a few months now (from my good old, faithful SE K800i) but couldn't really decide what to get; I needed a good camera - nothing whizz-bang, but something of decent enough quality. The 5800 delivers here, although its performance in low light isn't overly brilliant, its image quality in normal/bright light is more than satisfactory. The music player is very good (better than my iPod through my Shure in-ear phones) indeed. Like all Nokias I've owned, the menus are intuitive, and even my 44 yr old fingers can rattle through the phone's functions fairly easily now (I'm something of a techno-phobe so it has to be easy for me to get on with it!). All in all I'm extremely happy with this phone.

I brought this phone on a contract upgrade two months ago but I'm going against the crowd, as I think its rubbish. I couldn't decide between this and n79, but plumped for this due to all the hype. There are some good things, big screen, google maps, good speakers. But the phone is poorly built and is cheap and plastic. Other touch screens are flat, but this has a rim round the edge which makes it difficult to scroll through to the bottom of menus. The music player is no where near as good as a proper music player ie. iPod, so I never use it. While texting, the sreen changes randomly which means you write things you dont want, or even sends the message before finishing. When I recieve or make calls, the phone crashes, and the screen starts to flash. There are times when the unlock key doesn't work so I have to turn it off and back on again. The backlight won't go off, despite changing the settings, so battery lasted less than 24 hours. I've kept it in its case and I have a screen protector on it, so I certainly haven't abused it! Its off to Nokia for repair now, and t mobile said it could be "1 to 4 weeks". I read all these reviews but sometimes your opinion is different! Sorry.

I have had this phone for a month now and i am fairly impressed. The user interface at first is quite fiddly what with the double tap on some things and not others but after a few days it's a breeze. The sound from the speakers is pretty loud and can fill a room (a quiet one at that). texting using the full qwerty is possible (although i prefer the normal alphernumeric) with fingers (mine are pretty big) but i prefer not to as the screen gets dirty, this is where the plectrum comes in handy. The build overall seems fairly solid and contrary to what other people have said i actually find the phone to be quite grippy, although removing the back requires a bit of bravery as it feels like it is going to snap before it comes off. Although the touchscreen is not capacitive like the iphone it is still very responsive. I recently updated the firmware and have found the phone to run quicker and smoother. There seems to be a problem with realplayer on the updated firmware as videos that are streamed no longer seem to work. Browsing on the internet is also very easy and useful. The only slight niggle i have with the phone is that you are given about ten seconds warning before the phone switches off when you run out of battery, whereas on all my previous nokia phones the was a reserve tank of about half an hour before it swithched off. although saying that i have found that with moderate usage my battery lasts for around 4 days, but i always run down my battery to ensure that it lasts longer when recharged. I have used the iphone extensively and i would still by this phone hands down, the iphone just isn't worth spending that amount of money on.

Well, have had my 5800 for a couple of days now and have to say it's not bad.. it does everything i need it to do with ease so from a user standpoint i'd have to say its as good as most other phones out there.. just what you'd expect from Nokia. i would say its a little fiddly to use, big fingers and a touch screen dont always go together!!! and lets face it who wants to keep having to get the stylus out! but thats true of all touch screens.. The only place i think the 5800 really comes up short is in the design and quality of the case.. It really does feel cheap and the shape makes it awkward for those of us with bigger hands to hold! i do find it slips out of your hands quite easily.. have ordered a silicone case to see if that remedies the situation! I fear that i may well miss my old O2 Orbit which after 18 months of being used in the construction industry shows almost no signs of wear.. so all in all Nokia havent done a bad job but i have to say theres a little way to go yet in getting it just right!

Although I agree with a great deal of the reviews here (this phone is excellent), I feel I ought to point out a couple of irritating features I have noticed after playing about for a couple of days. I have recently switched from an ancient Samsung to this phone, and the main menu has come as a shock! Having owned a Nokia before, I am dissapointed to see that they have made the menu system no easier, and I have spent hours trying to change the settings to my liking, often without success (the manual was often no help). Eventually I found most of the settings (clock, etc...) hidden in the applications bar, rather than settings. Another factor is the web browser, which, although quick, is clumsy. When viewed with the navigation buttons on the right, the screen is significantly limited in size, but when switched to full screen you lose the back button & zoom buttons...irritating at best. I wish they had thought just a little bit more about what buttons you actually need when browsing. I also have yet to discover how to switch between multiple screens...possibly just a failing on my part, but another example of how difficult it is to find the buttons i need. I'd like to point out that I think this phone is one of the best on the market (in certain resopects possibly better than the iPhone), but should caution first-time Nokia users.

Althoug this phone isn't iPhone rival as this is a mid-range unlike iPhone which is pricey.. so for this price this phones a bargain and has everything you would want in a hi-tech phone! 5 STARS :)

I believed the hype and bought this pile of plastic. What a horrible phone. It has more bugs than a jar full of roaches. It has the worst cam I have ever seen in any mobile. Don't tell me that I have to buy a digital cam for pics. When u buy this phone, ur also paying for all the features. So they should work. It has horrible battery life, no software for it yet, can't sync music automatically as you have to do it manually. Mine was back to service center in less than a week. Shows how good this phone is...yea right. When I was at the service center I saw others also bring this phone back for repairs. Now I know why nokia made this phone cheap, this is a prototype and nokia is using us as testers for its upcoming n97. Junk phone, avoid at all cost!

Just bought this phone yesterday and I am delighted! So far, no problems at all. I am incredibly impressed. Very fast and easy to use! I would recommend this phone to anyone, it's one of the best phones I have ever come across. I am very pleased with the touch screen; easy to press with your fingers and with a stylus it's even easier. The screen itself I am incredibly pleased with also, immense high resolution that I love! Best phone I have ever bought. Usually there are a few things I could tweak when I buy a new phone, but the Nokia 5800 is perfect. Nothing I would actually change, I love it.

I have now had the Nokia 5800 Xpress phone for just over a week. The first went back to Orange after a couple of days. When using the phone with the loudspeaker, whilst conferencing, listeners complained that i was constantly breaking up. I had to instead use my wifes LG KS360 to finish the call (no complaints from the listeners). I am pleased to announce that the replacement 5800 is a lot better and does not suffer the same fate. In a nut shell, I am very pleased with the touch screen (my first!), the speaker sound is excellent (better than most and almost on par with a blackberry), great WiFi connection (although a little annoying having to always confirm that you want to use your desired network), camera is ok so far (but have not tested it properly), love the little stand that it comes with (so sweet of Nokia), easy to use functions (and quite intuitive), like the accelerometer, I LOATHE texting (big time!) but have found it very easy with the qwerty keyboard an d stylus (the handwriting recognition is quite fun too!) and finally love the design. I have always had Nokia, tried Samsung (A300) and Sony Ericcson (W810i) many years ago, but they were promptly put back in their boxes before reverting back to trusted Nokia. Ps did i say this how good this phone looks?

I must admit I was a little aprehensive when I ordered this phone. Firstly, I have been an avid SE fan since the K700i and swore blind I would never go back to Nokia. Secondly, I text.....alot and so naturally I was concerned about the whole 'touch screen' thing. Although I have only had the 5800 for 2 days I have to say I am totally and utterly impressed, The touch screen is a breeze to use as are the rest of the features/applications, you can choose either alphanumeric (predictive text on for me!), large or mini qwerty keyboards (which ever you prefer) at any point during texting. There's a switch on the side of the phone to lock the screen (which you can set a timer for) this is a pukka feature as it saves any unwanted usage. I have friends who have just bought other touch screen phones and after seeing the 5800 in the flesh are totally regretting not buying it. The screen itself is just crystal clear, great for films etc, and the sound? well, what can I say? st ereo speakers, just brilliant! The interface is very fast and reponsive with no sign of any 'lag' and the 'double tap' feature on some features saves incorrect selection . I Haven't used the camera yet so i'm unable to comment on it. I can't quite believe i'm saying all this about a Nokia, who I feel have lost the plot over the past few years. But, if you want a phone that's simple to use with all the bells and whistles (whether you use them or not) then get the 5800 I promise you won't regret it. Definate iphone beater in my book. Well done Nokia.(atlast!)

After 3 false starts with a Samsung Tocco( sound quality apalling - I couldn't hear what anyone was saying - it was so muffled)I am VERY pleased with the 5800. I use a phone primarily as "a phone" - I know, unusual these days! Its a doddle to operate and the texting is so simple. I find the touch screen very receptive without being overly sensitive - I couldn't stop the scrolling on the Tocco and spent ages wafting back and forth through my address book. I cannot comment on the camera as it is not something I use very often. I have found my way round this little Nokia gem very easily -it's quite intuitive. So I have returned to the Nokia fold after several years of owning Samsungs, which I think may have lost their way a bit recently.

I'm new to touchscreen phones. I got an LG Viewty last year but after it woke me the first two nights I owned it bleating for power it went back. It was generally rubbish. My first impression of this phone was good and it just got better. It's easy to use, you can trouser it, unlike a wide iphone and don't underestimate the importance of being able to use one hand. The iphone is swish but expensive and too large for normal use. The internet is quick, the radio sounds great (haven't used the mp3 player yet but assume that will too) and the maps are good. Best of all, the reception and battery life are great. To summarise, with this phone you don't compromise the portability and practicality of your phone to get the extra whizzy bits. 3.2 mp camera is good enough for most of us and the clincher is , it's free.

Ignore the hype about the feature starved iphone - the nokia 5800 is 'THE' @ the present time.

Had this phone for a week now and all I can say is that it is absoultely brilliant. Everything about is oozes class and quality, really is a superb effort from Nokia. I have switched from one manufacturer to another over recent years and seemed to go from disappointment to disappointment (with the utterly useless N73 almost putting me off Nokia for good) but this phone has restored my faith in them! The screen quality is fantastic, with the touch technology very responsive and easliy equal to that of the iPhone. The battery life especially has been one of the most impressive things to me though. After using it as a web browser on my WiFi at home, then as an MP3 player whilst out, as a Sat-Nav whilst in the car and then also for watching impressively high quality streaming videos on the BBC iPlayer application the battery level had hardly dropped at all. Even though some people may frown at the relatively modest 3.2 megapixel camera the image quality it produces is still great for everyday photos. I really couldn't reccomend this phone enough to somebody! 6 stars! ******

You know what! I this has to be the best phone that i have ever had. Not because it is touchscreen... but because it incorporates all the features of my N95 plus enhances many of them. The fact that this phone is touchscreen is only an added benefit. Very quick phone, easy access menus, professional sat-nav comparible with Tom Tom, Full Qwerty Keypad is highly responsive, Internet browsing is fast. My only gripe if you will is that you can not access the full BBC websites as it picks it up as a "mobile device" Well done Nokia... far more superior to your N95... which was junk! lol

After reading numerous reviews on this and other websites, I decided to take the plunge and upgrade from my Motorola V8 to the 5800. I did consider the iphone, but didn't want to pay over the odds and switch providers just for the privilege, and feature-wise the Nokia seemed like the better option What can I say that hasn't already been said. This phone is fantastic and has everything I would want from a phone and more. The touch screen is brilliant, it does take some time to get used to but I found texting gets easier after a few days. The sound and video quality is great, and I managed to get online using a WI-FI hotspot in a few minutes. The Symbian OS is very intuitive and you can customise almost any feature of the interface to suit your needs. The only problem I found was that the sound volume doesn't go high enough when you are outdoors, but I'm sure it will be sufficient for most people. Overall I think this is a top phone and easily competes with the iphone. It may not have the same build quality and apps support at the moment, but it does have a better battery life, removable memory, better camera and is smaller and lighter.

Superb phone! I'd been checking out mobiles for 3 months before my upgrade was due and was strongly drawn to the HTC Touch HD but was put off by it being (usually) only available on Orange. Then this little gem appeared and a bloke came into where I work and showed me his in action. Decided to take the plunge and do not regret it at all. Does everything my old N73 did and loads more but at least 10x faster. Takes a little adjustment from keys to touch interface but will struggle to ever consider going back. Battery life is good as long as you manage what apps the phone is running in the background and set vibration and tone levels to minimum (reasonable) levels. After 3 weeks, mine has not "shut down" once. Got one for my other half and she loves it and my daughter now says that her contract must be renewed 3 months ahead of schedule just so that she can have one too! Downloaded a lot of free apps and they integrate (in the main) very well, games are very different played on a touch screen but satisfying. Handy Shell is a good little app to add but needs paying for (approx $20). Overall, cannot recommend this handset highly enough, and as has already been mentioned, can be got at a more than reasonable price on contract (UK anyway).

Mike (below) - this is far from an outstanding phone. My post on 27th February is hopefully articulate enough to explain some of the issues. Since then, I would add to the list - shutting down, freezing, losing time, poor picture quality and running slow when music player is in operation. This is all on the 11.0.009 firmware. I can assure you I have not abused my phone, so it looks like there are a few 'duffers' out there. Only another 16 months of my contract to go.....
