First of all the phone was not compatible with Orange, who supplied it, in that it was always showing a 'voice mail message'. Little help from Orange who blamed Nokia or Nokia who blamed Orange until someone at Nokia helped with an upgrade. It's supposed to be a Sports phone but the rubber keypad is peeling off and now Nokia repair agent says it will cost Ģ45 to fix and I'd be better off buying a new phone.

I've had mine for over a year now and still woking well and the keys have stayed put! The major flaw is that the back cover design is flimisy and the screw think has fallan out. To be fair - Vodafone (UK) replaced that for free even after 14 months. I even dropped my off a car roof at 50 MPH and no damage except a small ding! Not bad - the other phone I left on the roof was shattered!

No durability problems here. My problem is that I find the processor to be too slow and sometimes even freezes. It takes up to a minute to load pictures. Interface isn't the best I've seen either. Not always that logical or easy to use. Graphics are very basic too. Online Nokia support (stuff to download) is also very meagre! The sports function is really nice but also rather basic. I also have my doubts about the accuracy of the running speed/distance. Camera is good. Music quality is excellent!! And the Groovelabs is megacool: you have to tilt the phone in any direction to move the little ball. Nifty!

I've had my 5500 Sport for a year and I've never been so disappointed with any phone before. It cannot communicate with my Mac computer as Nokia have not developed software for Macs. I downloaded the Windows compatible software to run in my PC emulator but the screen icons were totally pixilated and unreadable. Useless !! I have to sent photos, videos, music to a friend's phone (a Samsung) that has good software that can email to my internet account. Additionally, other software faults in the phone have developed. Each time I switch the phone on it tells me there is a new Voice Message waiting for me, even if there isn't. I have checked with my phone account provider who say there is nothing wrong at their end and the fault is within my phone. Just recently, the headphone icon has started to appear randomly even though I never use headphones. This means I cannot hear when the phone rings and cannot hear the other person speaking unless I start using headphones. But then, it randomly switches out of headphone mode !! The latest fault that has developed is that it has stopped communicating with my bluetooth earpiece. I've tested the earpiece with other phones and it works fine. This is obviously yet another problem with my phone. The contract on my phone expires in two days and I shall be upgrading it as soon as possible thereafter - and it won't be another Nokia

A very durable phone - until it sheds its keypad. Then it's totally unusable. I had mine fixed under warranty. The rubber flap covering the connectors at the bottom also broke. Now the phone is 16 months old, more issues have emerged. The text messaging application is so buggy that it crashes-to-standby at least twice a day. Sometimes it doesn't crash, it just hangs, and I have no choice but to reboot the phone. And turning it on takes about two minutes - no good if you need to call an ambulance (yes, it once delayed me calling an ambulance). The key placement also means I frequently hit cancel by accident when texting, so I have to find my half-written message in Drafts. This usually involves the Messaging app hanging again, me swearing, and rebooting the phone again. The Sports application can not be exited. It runs in the background draining power as long as the phone's on. Some nice features - like a pedometer, and the very useful torch - but it's missing some basic things. There is NO STOPWATCH and NO COUNTDOWN TIMER. I don't want a World Clock if I can't time my pie in the oven. Don't buy it. For your own sanity. You'll thank me.

Nokia has fixed the keypad problem in later revisions (phones manufactured approx. from mid-2007 to present). However the popularity of the phone had already dropped and now it is a BARGAIN because for a small amount of money you get one of the best smartphones around. It's small, excellent keypad, excellent durability (i've had it for 6 months and I could sell it as NEW, it's still perfect) plus you get the Symbian 9.1 OS... my best buy in a long time.

When my Nokia 5140i came up for replacement, I took up an offer on a 5500 and I wish I hadn't. I work outside and I only require a phone to make and recieve calls with an odd text message every so often. The 5500 is hard to hear when it rings, the vibration cant be felt and it regularly freezes when I press the answer key and it needs the battery taking out and restarting again. Once in a call, the volume is very poor and the loadspeaker is even worse. On the odd occasion I have used the camera, I have found it to be extremly poor, the one no my last phone was better. Within a few months, the keys have come away from the case, which I mended by glueing them back in myself which has also happened to my freinds phone. Also the new type of nokia charger is hopeless. Out of 5 in our household, only one of them manages to work and only if the wire is held in a certan position. Nokia should go back to the drawing board and make a simple rugged shockproof and waterproof phone for buisiness users, not wannabe sports people who probably wouldnt have this type of phone anyway. I wouldnt wish this model on anybody and will never have another new nokia again

Keypad hasn't peeled off and I've had phone three months. Dropped it on concrete couple of times which marked it a bit but still works perfectly. Screen hasn't scratched at all. You can delete all text messages at once, by selecting 'mark all' and then delete. Battery life is average, especially if you play games, but this is to be expected with a smartphone. Charging flap is a bit fiddly. Many features on this phone, nice size, pretty easy to use. If you want a simpler phone with good battery life, get Nokia 6300.

I bought this phone last Feb, and i love it. A couple of small problems, 1 when you turn the phone on, it seems to take ages to get going 2, when going into text messages, it again takes a while to open the message 3, it eats the battery so fast i have to charge it up every other day. My last phone lasted up to 8 days on standby, and 4, I do not like the rubber flap at the bottom. I feel it is going to come off before long. Apart from that, i think it is perfect. The sound when playing either radio or mp3 is great. With the earphones on its as good as any walkman, and has a better sound quality than my laptop. The camera delivers a great picture. Its as good as my 5 mega pixal digital camera. The only thing that lets it down is the video. The quality is quite poor especially when watching it on my laptop. It is very solid in construction. My little girl has knocked it in the toilet and thrown it downstairs onto a hard wooden floor. It still works and does not have a mark on it. A great phone and its easy to use.

The display is small - the numbers smaller (post 40's eyesight issues), and yes - the keypad fell off after a few months. Overcomplicated non-intuitive menue structure with multiple useless features. Texting is a pain, and battery life unimpressive. Voice command is difficult to use -in fact I gave up trying to record my own voice tags. Ellen (the voice reader for text messages) is at best mildly annoying. I bought this phone because I work in the marine industry and am out in all weathers - so "waterproof" was a big factor in my choice - but this is about as waterproof as my 10 year old Docksiders (though it probably smells marginally better!) I really like this phone. Not only it does look like a real phone, but it also hides something of a great monster that will make everyone owning it to be a very capable person. Starting with its three modes (the Phone, Music and Sport), well, admit it that this is the only phone that can do all the three modes simultaneously. It sports the not-really-the-latest-but-fast hardware specs incorporated with the new generation Symbian OS, a 220 mHz processor utilized by the Symbian OS 9.1 S60 3rd Edition respectively. I like the idea that smartphones would have to change their reputations of big and bulky and I am very grateful that I'm one of the lucky pioneers who have to own such petite magnificence in brilliance. On the other side of the story, even Achilles had his heels as a weakness, this down-to-earth phone also does have some shortcomings that will have to put a very big impact on its productivity to some users. The very negative issue on this phone is its KEYPAD FALLING OFF. I do admit that I'm one of the victims of such phenomenon and it is quite a big disappointment for such a sportphone to think that it must be very invulnerable to dust and splash. Another thing that hinders it for reaching the peak of satisfaction is its battery life. Imagine, for the very first time that I had used this phone to extent, I make the juice out of it in just 5 hours! Indeed, it shocked me but considering the fact that it is a very powerful capable phone having to be energized by a mere 760 mAH battery, it do deserve to be pardoned and respected. I have read some users reporting on the speed issue. I guess its on the user's managing of running applications at the same time. It is not the latest core duo computers that you have the freedom to multitask all your apps. Should you have a 220mHz-consideration? In my seven months of experience with this phone, I only experience this when I use the phone while Music Player on the background and when I have 500 messages in my Inbox and a hundred more in the Outbox. Its normal speed it faster than other Symbian phones (N70, 6600, 6630, and 3230). Remember, it has the same specs as Nokia 3250. Hints for faster usage: 1. Don't do stuffs while having the music mode on the background. 2. Do not store so many messages in the Inbox and Outbox. Move it to a folder or delete it and please do put the memory card to default as the memory to use. 3. Delete unnecessary files in the phone memory. In summary, this is not a phone for those who don't know how to consider some minor problems. A price to be paid for what it can do. This phone is targeted for those who are active in life that requires a smarter phone for a companion. It lacks the future-proof 3G frequencies and multimedia handling (including the very small 208*208 pixel-screen) but is do complemented by having a 3-D sensor, Text-to-Speech functionality and a very durable solid built. For them it is the Nokia 5500 Sport, but for me, it is the Nokia 5500 Sport- a Smartphone on Steroids.

I have had my 5500 sport for about a week. The MP3 player and all other features work fine for me. The only problem i have is that the reception is awful. If I'm not in line of sight of a cell tower and within 1/4-1/2 mile I can get a decent signal. If I'm in a neighborhood even near a tower If I'm lucky I'll get any signal at all. It's so bad I have quit using the phone and pulled out a motorola c-139 from the drawer and am using it until something can be done with the 5500. I am in the US and they aren't available here yet. I got mine from a friend that works for Nokia. Hopefully it's just a problem with my particular phone. As it is it's a good MP# player and other stuff but the phone aspect is not usable at all. For an example I will have no bars on the 5500 but my 139 right next to it has 3-4 bars. Often sitting there the 5500 will drop the network all together. Funny thing is the 139 was only $20 and is far superior as a phone.

Maybe if you read the instructions before criticising this phone you may understand. No thermometer - Fair enough but why would you need one? Its not as if it could predict the weather or anythibg. No simple calender - Have a go at pressing RIGHT on the keypad!! No repeat alarm - Not that hard to set the alarm every night and it means that it is always at the right time You have to delete messages 1 by 1 - Did you not notice the little button on the right hand side which makes it even easier to mark messages and other files than having to go to menu > mark > mark one or whatever?! Also the so called sport trainer is a watse of time, and the step counter isn't accurate. - Did you set your height etc properly? Mine is within about 100 m if I walk somewhere and then measure that distance on multimap. TRUST ME: This is a great phone and can take anything you throw at it (Including bricks!!)

I've had my 5500Sport for about 8 months now and It's a great little phone. I love the voice announements when you get a call or txt, especially when driving with a B'Tooth headset, the way you can listen to txt's is really good too, again when driving. The hads free calling is much better than some phone on the market. The torch has got me out of all sorts of problems and the reception has been fantasic - even in places where other phones don't work too well. The screen is easy to read, the menu is usual Nokia and easy to navigate. It's an all round goog phone. I fish alot and the wipe clean case is great (no fishy mess) so I guess if you sweat on it it's just as easy to clean. The battery life is good, I use mine 'normally' and it lasts a week between charges. The bad points, when your out of signal range the battery life goes down really quick, a day out of range can cripple the battery - but you can always switch the phone off so that's no great hardship. The keypad, ah! there is a problem here. The adhesive becomes 'tacky' when it get warm and results in the keypad peeling away. At the corners to begin with, then the keypad in general. However, a small drop of superglue (other products are available)and the problem is solved Overall - there is a problem with the keypad, but the other features make up for it. If you re-apply the glue with a less heat sensative product, it's agreat phone.

The phone must be though eonugh to the shocks but the the thin metal body has dents even after a soft stroke. The other versions body was made from rubber and i dont have to think of these dents. Also the other versions screen was smaller but they have bigger and more readable fonts. The calandar was my worst disappiointment about this phone. Not much but only the calendar of the older versions would be better. Not usefull. Also there is no automatic keylock, you have to install a third party application for locikng the keypad!! I think O2 should replace it.t It is a pain in the A** to turn on and freezes often - then u have to undo the back cover and remove the battery. bit of the fromt cover fell off. It became dislodged from the keypad from normal carrying in my pocket and the plastic screen was cracked. Well it happened again as well. I havent got hold of the nokia 5500 mobile and dont think I ever will, thanx 2 all the reviews here(great job guys!). However, May I suggest the Nokia 5140 for those that seek weatherproof-ness. I am using one since2 yrs I think, and I use it wherever I go, and Being in the Maldives,I think its fair to say if it survives here, then its good enough! I have used it in the rain, taken it while fishing on the sea as it dangled from my belt, etc.So far, I havent had any probs with its weatherproofness. The places where u press to remove the cover, wears off if u take the cover very often and frequently. It actually turns brittle (only at the finger pressing areas) and cracks and creates a hole that however, does not breach waterproofness! The actual phone seems quite well sealed for rain and sea travel. The bottom part that conceals the adapter plug-in braks off due to wear n tear easily. But careful handling while ac-adapting, provess useful.(theres only infra red, no bluetooth) Anyway, though no memorycard can be attached, the optional GPS cover, camera, press to talk feature, compass and light makes up 4 everything. Those are the only features I personally need on MY phone.Any extras, will b a bonus. DONT GO 4 THE nokia 5500...even Nokia 5140 (much older model) is better than that I think. But remember, make ur phone more durable by taking loving care of it (even if once-in-a-while)!

The torch is a nice feature, but that's about all I do like about this phone! Every phone call has interference on the line (loud buzzing) and that's when it actually connects the call! It regularly cuts me off mid sentence and also has a tendency to crash. Only way to restart it is to remove the battery, and replace. I agree with the other reviewers about the alarm being annoying. Also the snooze setting is set to 5 mins and can't be changed. The vibrate is virtually non existent. The other features take some getting used to, and I was prepared for that, but not to have a phone that doesn't work properly. Very poorly designed and shoddily manufactured.
