This is THE most frustrating phone I've ever had. It may be classed as entry level by dealers, but as far as I am concerned, it's utter rubbish. It's slow, you need to be on a hilltop to connect to the web, it switches itself off. No wonder some shops in the UK are offering you £300 to take one. Garbage.

I've had a Nokia 5230 since June 10, and have had enough of it! I got it on basis of a Which magazine review largely because of it's good sound quality. While that's true, almost everything else is an absolute pain. Very little on it works in an intuitive fashion, and I'm constantly annoyed with it. Yes, its got lots of "bells and whistles", most of which I don't need or use.....I just want one that works simply and sensibly. 5230? ....don't go there!

In true Nokia style, the hardware is topnotch. It's a nice size, not the most petite phone in the market but nothing too big either. Around the front, it features a 3.2-in, 640x360 pixel TFT touch screen display, and while it doesn't compare too favourably to my current favourite (the Galaxy S), it isn't half bad on its own. The response on the touch screen display is a little hit-and-miss though--while it registers most touches immediately, it suddenly (and rather inexplicably) failed to respond or responded so slow, i ended up pressing the on-screen buttons one time too many.

I AM A GRANNY AND I LOVE THIS PHONE, IT IS EASY TO UNDERSTAND EASY TO USE, NICE AND LOUD YOU CAN HEAR IT WHEN SHOPPING, I LIKE THE QWERTY BOARD FOR TEXTING, IT IS SO MUCH EASIER THAN THE OLDER TYPE PHONES. THE ONLY FAULT I FIND IS I DONT KNOW HOW TO MAKE THE PHONE RING LONGER, IT GIVES THREE RINGS AND THEN GOES ONTO ANSWER MACHINE. BY THE TIME I ANSWER IT, IT HAS STOPPED RINGING, SO IF THERE IS A WHIZZ KID OUT THERE THAT KNOWS HOW ITS DONE PLEASE LEAVE ME AN ANSWER, OTHERWISE I LOVE IT XX

As a serious hard-core techi I am very sceptical of the smart phone market, over priced and over rated is my general observation. However having never had to purchase a phone before, I have always been provided them for free, I spent some significant time procrastinating over what to spend my hard earned cash on. The Nokia 5230 sort of presented itself to me quite by accident and I must say give the price it is a “smart phone”. Nope it isn’t uber cool like the iPhone or the Androids but it does the trick. The camera is a little disappointing and there is no WiFi. It is however responsive, and the onscreen keyboard works well. The OVI maps navigation is an excellent addition, in my opinion it leaves the lower-end dedicated Sat-Navs for dead. The choice of apps from OVI is excellent and sync options work well. Probably not for the dedicated Smart phone-aholics but as a cost effective smart-ish phone, it does the trick.

I don't recommend buying Nokia 5230. You can't transfer photos, music etc between your PC and the phone although it claims to have bluetooth and USB port for the transfer. You must be a techie to make it work. Worst still, no support from the manufacturer.

Got this phone as a stop gap for £80 from Vodaphone. Wasn't expecting to much for the money but times are hard. Having used it for a couple of months, I will not be looking for a replacement. It does loads of things very well. The sat nav being a particular highlight, allways updating its maps for free. The internet is very good as well. The touch screen took a bit of getting used to, but now I love it. Some people moan about the battery, but mine is fine. This phone compares well with other smart phones costing three times as much. As RB says, most of the "Faults" with this can be solved by reading the manual. I can see no reason to spend any more money on a phone. And you can change the memory card and battery yourself, not send it to a dealer.

GENUINE REVIEW BY 22 YEAR OLD FEMALE!!!!!!!!! I have just received the Nokia 5230 for my 22nd birthday and i love it. My partner got one a while back and seeing his in use made me really want one, we tell them apart as i have attached the bright pink back case that came with it. My old phone was a Nokia slide (sorry forgot the model number) it was also a good phone (i highly rate Nokia's)in the end though my left, right and down button stopped working (high use for 3 years). I havn't found a single fault or dislike in the 5230 absolutly love it. Extra credit has enabled me to get extra games and music for the phone. Music sounds good, camera is good and easy to use. The triangular stlyus (plectrum)is great comfortable to use and attached by a good quality piece of elastic. You can have a number of icons displayed on the home page so easily navigate to different things. You can also choose to have the basic style so a large display of photo if you like. Im never getting lost again either as the phone has a built in sat-nav for use whilst driving or on foot. I can set mulitple alarms and set them for my work days aswel, fantasic as only having one before was a pain for my lazy attemp to get out of bed each morning :) Cool: i know who's calling me before i even look at the phone, a cool dude says aloud the name of the caller (obviously providing they are saved in your phonebook). All round great phone! no more doubting about buying one....go and buy one!!!!!!!!!!!!x

Reading through the reviews so far, I would say to most of the complaints READ THE MANUAL. most of the so called 'faults' are features which can be customized. It doesn't come with any maps installed, hence 'red dot in the middle of a blank screen'. Try downloading some, works great, and they are free! As for the camera, it is far better than most other 2MB models, and much better than my previous Sony Ericsson 3MB, especially in low light.

I've had my 5230 for about 3 months and I would say cons outweigh the pros. Texting can be frustrating as the phone goes into auto delete and deletes the whole message, as if the back arrow key is stuck, also the phone switches form portrait to landscape at the most inapropriate moments making texting and searching just plain tedious.Problems with freezing, slow speed of use, camera is pathetic when used indoors, battery life is awful when using internet or games. Some od features but I wouldn't recommend it for the above reasons.

hi , its 8 months , since i bought it , i am very happy with it . it has many features u will fall in love with ..... good screen , very very good n-Hd quality camera recording, average pics . u can install / uninstall many apps like a windows pc . s60 v5 type symbian os .though they have given a stylus . i have no need for it . but u DEFINITELY NEED A SCREEN PROTECTOR AS SCRATCHED APPEAR DUE TO YOUR FINGER NAILS . THE EARPHONES ARE SHI T . BUT WITH A SEINHESER EARPHONE IT GAVE SUPERB MUSIC OUTPUT .gives a good touchscreen ex[perience . gps helps you ...... but smsing and typing on the go is a pain as there is no qwert key pad only an onscreen keypad .good battery backup of a few days ., its huge like a pencil box :) due to its powerful battery .exellent call quality . but if u try to record a conversation , it beeps every 5 sec so that the other person knows u are recording him.....:) here is where i prefer sony or samsung .......it has a weak speaker , with a very low low volume ... so unless its 2 feet away from your ear and in full blast or in vibratory mode ........you wont hear it ...... and one more thing the call quality is good ........

I have had this phone about 2 months now, and it's an okay phone. It is easy to use with a good menu and set-up. The internet is better than my old LG, and I'm happy about that. The 3G is really good and the connection works well. The only problems I would say is the battery life is horrendous!! I literally have to charge it every other day! And it won't let you send/receive texts, and/or do anything if you use up the phone memory, so I recommend that you MUST get an memory card!! The handwriting feature is okay but I don't ever use it. Another thing is that you MUST exit the apps (messages, contacts, log ect ect...) as that drains the battery too. But overall it's an all right phone.

The cool contact's bar, the large display, the ease of access to multimedia features via the media sensor or whatever its called, make it a phone worth owning, well atleast for me. Enjoying its browser too. Sure its camera isn't quite as sharp, and it doesn't produce the best sound, but it's a phone, and it does its typical phone tasks rather well.
