Motorola L6 Review

Rating:
Date: 15/12/2006
The Motorola L6 is a super slim entry level camera phone. It is a good size candy bar phone with a thickness of only 10.9 mm and weighs only 86g.
The camera is a VGA camera with 4 x digital zoom and video capabilities which is typical for a phone within this price range.
It has an STN display rather then a TFT which means that it is not as bright and would be harder to see in bright conditions. The resolution is 128 x 160 pixels and it supports 65k colours.
If you are looking for a phone with a music player this phone is not for you. It does not play MP3's or have an FM radio however it is capable of using MP3 tones as ringtones with a 24-voice polyphonic sound. Memory is also quite limited with only 10MB of internal memory although as it doesn't have an MP3 player this is a good amount.
The L6 connects to the internet using GPRS which is a good speed for data transfer. It has an excellent battery life with 345 hours of standby time. The phone works on a tri-band network meaning it will work in Europe and America.
Overall, for the price you pay, this is a very good phone with some standard features for a good budget phone. We would recommend it to you if you are looking for a simple yet stylish phone. If you require something with a little more to offer in terms of features, then we would recommend you have a look at the L7, however this is more expensive.

Features of the Motorola L6 include:

  • Camera: 4x zoom
  • Display: 128 x 160, 65K color CSTN
  • Ringtones: MP3 ring tones
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth® wireless technology, mini-USB
  • Memory: Up to 10MB of end user embedded memory
  • Messaging: SMS, MMS
  • Internet: WAP 2.0
  • Talk Time: Up to approximately 350 minutes
  • Standby: Up to approximately 345 hours
  • Operating Frequency: Tri band (GSM 900/1800/1900)
  • Size: 113 x 49 x 10.9 mm
  • Weight: 86g

for those who think this mobile phone is bad. its true that it has got bad camera quality and the bluetooth range is also not too good and it has got less memory but i think that you got this phone far good from other phone of the same price. the others has got none features among these, i consider them as a junk and c'mon it got released arouind 2005(not sure about that) but at that time it was a superior phone but if you are thinking to buy it nowadays then its really a junk for today. i am using it and say that its got really less memory in compare of other phones which i htink is the worst thing in the set.

I presently own this phone and Have had it for about three years now. The battery life sucks! I charge it every other day and the only quality time I spend with my phone is when it rings. I hate the fact that I can only store up to three full length songs on this phone. The camera is decent but thats all it'll ever be. The bluetooth works but not as well as other phones. It takes a while to find other bluetooth devices. The interface is fairly simple, nothing complicated at all. I used to play True Crime NY and a Scooby Doo game on my phone (before I got tired of charging so often). So its very good with flash games.

I bought this phone for £20 from carphone warehouse. It has a camera that takes ok pictures and it has lots of ringtones and message tones and you can change the wallpaper and colours. There are lots of options in all the menu's. The sound is loud enough to hear and the reception quality is excellent. This is one of the best phones i've had for hearing a conversation clearly. It has all the basics too like alarm clock and calender. For the price this is a fantastic phone with many features of a more expensive type. The only negatives are, it does feel a little bit cheap in the hand but it is ultra slim and you don't even notice you are carrying it. The only other problem i've had is trying to transfer data between the phone and PC. Other than that, this phone is definitely worth a look and I highly reccomend it.

The bad points- bad memory, no mp3, rubbish camera, browser never worked so ignore that point on features, and i don't know if its just my phone but the bluetooth would not pick up anything and you have to highlight it all and tis complicated to send files. Good points- thin, easy to navigate, good colours, cheap. Ok well I loved it when i got it but within a few days I realist its kinda rubbish. Fine for a business man but not the one for teens to pick..

I love the L6! I have considered upgrading but can't find a better phone! The features I love are ease of use. Motorola's i-tap is the best texting on a mobile phone. It's got all the functions you need. The camera and video are basic but adequate. Games are good and easily downloadable. I've got Pictionary and Dakar Rally on mine! The dislay is large and clear. The sound quality is great both in the earpiece and speaker. Bluetooth and Triband are useful. The best thing is the size. This phone is so thin and fits in a pocket easily. It has no mp3 player - but why do you want one in a phone? I'd rather have a separate one.

I am just about to upgrade my 'phone as I am at the end of an 18 month contract. I'm kinda sad to see it go. It's robust; goodness knows how many times I've dropped it, it looks great and it's very thin! The battery life has been fantastic - though I must say that I don't tend to leave battery draining functions like Bluetooth permanently switched on. If you want a phone with a good camera, stay well clear of the L6 - it isn't very good and the memory capacity is pitiful. It's appearance doesn't date, either. This phone is reliable and value for money. I won't be packing mine away just yet - I'll keep it in reserve in case my new handset lets me down!

It would be better if it was higher than 10MB shared memory cos I like downloading games, videos, sounds and pictures onto my phone. Also the camera quality is rubbish - it's VGA(0.3/0.5 megapixels). Although this phone is pleasing to the eye, it is NOT durable atall. I have had this phone for a little over a year. For the first month or so I thought it was ok, kinda cute. Then I realised it had several issues which became more and more of a problem as time went by: Firstly it has to be charged like every 5 or 6 hours. The battery is not powerful enough to handle the features of the phone, and results in a dying or dead battery every few hours. Secondly, the phone has a tendency to freeze. This started to happen more and more frequently as the phone got older. Thirdly it has some sort of PTT malfunctioning. Everytime I turned it on it gave some sort of error message about PTT contacts, even though I did not even touch the PTT button on the side. This also started to happen more frequently, and randomly (i.e. when the phone is on and I have not even touched it). The camera and video quality is VERY low. The images are fuzzy and out of focus... I can barely make them out. The camera has very LITTLE memory, so that it can hardly hold any pics, videos and mp3's. Unlike the L7 this phone does not come with a memory card slot! About 2 or 3 months ago the phone started to go blank. I would have to take out the battery and slip it back in for the phone to turn on. Finally it just never came back on, it doesn't take the charge, it is just totally USELESS now. I must add that these problems are not because of misuse or maltreatment of the phone. Physically the phone looks like it did the day i bought it. I never drop it, or toss it around... it doesn't even have scratches on it. Therefore I have not contributed in any way to the problems of this phone... the phone is just of POOR quality and at a very POOR standard. I would not advise ANYONE to buy this phone.

It's a great beginners phone, tough to scratch the metal casing, and an excellent speaker. It can download a few songs from your PC too, but the camera has a mind of it's own-the pictures turn out blurry which is really annoying. Don't rely on the video unless it's a nice and sunny day with your subject on close up. The size is brill too, slim but too lightweight so that you don't know it's there. all in all a great basic phone.

Really weird but I dunno if that is a thing with other phones my friend said loads of moto phones do it. It takes AGES to send something it drives me mad. Good points though are that there is bluetooth, camera, video recordin, web acces and many more. Good phone if you have and iPod or something which you will willingly turn to for music most times. I've had this phone for 8 months now. The battery life is excellent, especially if you turn down the screen brightness and reduce the times on keypad illumination etc, I still get 5 days or so between charging with light usage. The apps dont run very fast, and there is no memory to speak of, but I can take pictures off the phone via Bluetooth to PC. I like the side buttons, one for photo and one for video. However, I got this phone for the camera, which gives good quality pictures on a sunny day. ONLY. Anything taken in a moderately dark environment is a real disappointment of poor colours and blotches, despite including a Night Mode. That said, I still really like this phone, and it's in pristine condition because I took one look at the large expanse of screen and casing that was crying out for scratches and bought a crystal cover case!

I have had this phone for a few months and when I got it I couldn't use it because the arial wasn't to work untill a few days after your purchase. The battery life is low. I go to school and only switch it on when I get out of the gates for my dad to call me. However I always charge it the day before I got to school everyday and after I get called 3 times one bar, out of 3, of the battery goes. I have had many problems with this phone and am looking to get a Samsung E250 which is far better in everyway. I have looked at the reviews and am pleased. It has every-thing this phone has and hasn't got. The memory on Motorola L6 is poor. Only 1060MB. It can't even take a memory card!

The L6 is so much better then the RAZR which doesn't even have a video camera! The only bad points about this phone are: The camera is really bad but then again it is only a vga so I pretty much expected it. The other bad point is the design is a bit boring compared to the slide and flip phones. But overall I like this phone and would highly recommend it as a first time phone as it is easy to use and comes in pink and silver so it suits boys and girls.

But some of us actually just want, you know, a PHONE! It's thin so it can easily fit in your front pants pocket without creating unfulfilled expectations the first time you take a new girl to bed. And it isn't loaded with some much ancillary trash that you have to search high and low to find the talk button. As you might imagine, I'm a proponent of the KISS philosophy (Keep It Simple, Stupid!) and the L6 does just that. Sure, I'd make it more basic still but it seems like no one will buy a cell phone unless it has some trick features...

I guess I have had the phone a while now but I have had so many problems with it. Now looking for a new phone as the battery no longer charges unless I press the charger into it! The screen cracked from just dropping it on the floor, which wasn't a great idea but wouldn't have broken a Nokia... The numbers and the silver plating on the buttons is wearing off, it won't let me open my outbox and the games don't work. The one thing I use it for the most is texting and the predictive texting doesn't learn new words, you have to put them in every time, and I can't find any logic in the punctuation it wants me to put in sometimes, when I just want a full stop! Also, it will tell you the memory is full AFTER you've written the message and pressed send and the message is then deleted, so you have to write it all over again. Not a great phone, stylish but it can't even do the basics.

this phone is very much a 8/10. i bought this as a long term replacement to my siemens and previoulsy, my indestructable nokia. in the time it took for my phone to arrive, i researched the motorola and asked for opinions from my friends with one. most claimed to have had problems, and had resulted in a decent phone with some disfuctions. the motorola arrived and the camera is good, but will blur if you move too quickly last minute (you avoid this by developing a steady hand over time). the video camera is not too shabby. well actually it is pretty shabby but you can make out limited detail. and it will play sound on teh recording without having to upload it to your pc. the mp3 fuction was my most anticipated, and is hugely poor should you fail to aqurre motorola phone tools. with it, you can cut the size and time of your tracks so that they will cram onto the 10mb memory (bad, put larger than the V3, and the L7 before a memory card is inserted.) im sure that this phone is style over content. and prior to it being stolen from me, i had been using the phone, at times intensively, for 11 months. whoever was lucky enough to land my phone whilst i was swimming is very lucky. Oh and the phone is thin, so don't mistake thin air for your pocket. it will break. you have been warned.

I initially loved the L6. It is one of the thinnest phones on the planet and does well in my pocket. However, this thinness came at a cost. My entire phone warps. The back aluminum panel that covers the battery has stayed bent in a warped shape. Because of this the phone will randomly lose battery contact and just shut off (instantly, not in the normal shut down way). So that sucks, especially when it does it as I'm pulling it out of my pocket to answer it. It takes forever to boot up and register, too. So that makes it worse. The keys are a tad bit too close together and the screen really is narrow. I wish there were volume buttons on the side like on my wife's RAZR. But no, the side buttons are for the camera--which makes it too easy to accidentally switch it into camera mode at any moment. I hate this phone now and I'll never by a slim bar phone again. I'm now looking at slider phones

I got this phone as a second spare phone on a 11-month cashback contract (so the whole contract ends up just costing me £25 for 12 months!). This is a really nice phone, nice and slim but well built. It works superbly and is a real pleasure to use. I've had a few Motorola's up to now and all of them have been the same quality (the A1000, A920, A835, L6 and soon I'm getting a V3XX), really well built and made to last. The other handy thing with the L6 is that you can charge it from USB so if you ain't got a power cable anywhere near you but you've got a laptop you can charge it off the laptop, really well thought out Motorola.

People I'm phoning say I sound muffled. It's sleek looking but what use is that when it's not sleek to use?!!!!

It has an awful memory of 10,000KBytes with no option of a memory card, it has a rubbish camera and the sound is crackly. Couldn't believe what I read about the phone here. Excellent? What about it is excellent? The poor camera, or the miserable sound quality? Or the fuzzy display that you can only read in the dark? Had this phone for a full year (unfortunately), and didn't like it from day one. It is slow (starting up as well as connecting via bluetooth), couldn't try to connect via USB because I couldn't get my hands on the right cable (tried different shops and even Motorola, no luck). Storage space is ridiculous, no expansion slot either. The whole phone is kind of flimsy, the back panel comes off on a regular basis. The battery life is not even worth mentioning, if you want to talk for more than 15 minutes you better do it while charging, otherwise you'll be cut off. Did I mention that the phone has a tendency to turn itself off and not come back on for about 5 minutes? Altogether, the phone is a total disappointment, and I can only suggest strongly to look for something else. Anything will do, really.

Cool looking phone physically, but the slick design doesn't extend to the user interface, which is ugly and not intuative. I liked the fact that it connects to the PC using 4-6pin USB cable (The type typically used to connect digital cammeras to a PC), but as I bought mine second hand and therefore did not get the CD ROM (if it comes suplied with one),I was unable to find working usb drivers online. Motorola provide the worst software support for a mobile phone that I have ever seen; the only thing available from their site was an updater, which updates the software on your phone, erasing all your media in the process. This phone supports Java, but it doesn't look like Motorola have a Java Development Kit available for this phone either. If you want to do anything on your phone that involves a PC, buy a Sony Ericsson.

I got this hone in april 2006, and have since been very impressed. The video only lasts for just under 14 seconds, and it only has 10 mb's. Whilst it's an atractive phone, it have been very un-impressed. To hld one song on my phone, i was forced to delete all bt four of my videos, and the majoity of my pictures. The camra on this phone is not the best you have seen, but will do. They are also very breakable. I dropped it on a soft carpet, and the screen imeadietly broke. I ten bought an L7, which s an improvment, but not by far. Although it has a memory slot, it is almoth worth just buying another phone, i would recommend the samsung D900. It is a slim slide phone, has 7 times the memory of an L6 or L7, and a slot for a memory card. If this is to expensve, i would also recomend the samsung D600. Both very attractive phones. The nokias are also good and have a decent amount of memory.Depending one what you want yor phone for, this can either be the right or wrong cho ice for you. If you want a phone for simply ringing and texting, this is the idea phone for you. It is attractive, and can slip right in your poket. If you want it for taking photos, videos, listening to music etc. Then this is not the right phone for you, and you are better off with ne of the ones i mentioned above. I hope this information has helped.

And sometimes it doesn't send messages but keeps them all for later, like pickles in a jar. Oh, and the camera isn't that good. And the Catchphrase buzzer ringtone is mightily annoying. During my time as Professor of Aquatic Photography at Cambridge I used this phone to record the religious practices of numerous species. While the camera coped well with the blood sacrifices among Guppies, it failed to capture the theological debates so common among goldfish. I believe the poor quality video camera on this phone is the main reason I can't get my work published :-(

This phone is quite good. It may have minor flaws but the performance is generally very reliable. However, I have to disagree with one of the earlier reviewers: I do not think this phone is suitable for goldfish photography. Goldfish move around a lot, especially the younger ones, and a VGA camera simply cannot keep up with their delightful whirling and twirling. I can only imagine this 'Bessie' is a particularly fat and lethargic specimen. The lack of memory space won't bother anyone with an MP3 player and the bluetooth is fine if you're not exchanging too many large files. Overall, four stars.

Apart from that, it looks good feels good and others say wow, smart phone. Also tried connecting to my Laptop through Bluetooth, difficult, as a posers phone, you cant go wrong. Ask it to do technical things like connect to computers and I think it lets itself down.

It's so slim!! It's so pretty!! Don't be fooled - this phone is pathetic. I'm an old fashioned kinda guy and I like a phone to have a battery that lasts for more than half an hour and a signal that doesn't vanish when I go indoors. So it turns out I made the wrong choice buying this one. My reception was excellent with my old Nokia, and now, thanks to a microscopic aerial, I'm frequently left with a phone I can't use. I've spoken to three other people and they all have the same complaint (and all are on different networks). And yes, the display is poor, the camera worse, and the texting is often infuriating. Any text program that thinks it knows better than you do what you want to say is going to annoy you eventually. Avoid.

Bad points, easy to lose in your handbag as it's so slim!!! Keys can be awkward to use, easily scratched, camera and video camera not great quality but good enough for the price you pay. One very good point though is the battery life. Excellent. I may have just picked up an odd dodgy one but based on that experience I wouldn't have another one. Sorry guys!!!

Instead of "OFF" and "Snooze" options in the morning when it goes off, there are three options like "Activate" and other modes that I gurantee will irritate the hell out of you if you plan using this phone as your alarm clock. I have a degree in IT & I cant figure it out. IE not very intutitive at all. Elsewise, I agree with the other comments. Pity, close but no cigar.

Compared to my sister's £150 Sony Ericcson I was a little surprised. My camera is much better quality (but not great) and has a really long battery life. Only bad points would be that you have to pay around £15 to get the software for the data cable! Also, Bluetooth is hard to use and the case is very difficult to get off. My friend has an L7 and costing the 3 times the price I paid for mine I'm glad I didn't get it! Also, this phone has no SD card slot so that means you're restricted to the 10mb integrated memory.

The L6 is a nice looking phone. Fits easily in your pocket and fits snugly in my hands. My hands are kinda big so texting is a bit of a problem but the itap is great (former phone was a nokia 3650). The Mp3 rintones are nice (but mo not as loud as my brothers K300). The vibrate feature is the killer. My vibrate is not working so I have to return the phone. When I ran a check with some other L6 owners the vibrate is very soft. If you rely on vibrate during the day this phone may not be the one for you. Unlike my old 3650 the pm features of the phone are limited to calender and calculator (no notes, no converter etc) however the java utility performs well so extras can be downloaded from net or via usb/bluetooth. My L6 came without cable and software so prepare to spend cash if you want to sync to pc (my nokia had free software, motorola should take note). For the price the L6 is a good by especially if you are into looks, however the SE K300/K310 is a much more solid performer (until later when the centre toggle and the back covering get loose).

Well i've just picked the phone up as a stop-gap until my contract is up for renewal...long story, my contract phone is in pieces lol ....Anyway, as it goes....great phone for the price.it rings people, it sends messages, the display is clear and it looks very stylish. The only problems i have with it are down to software, like not being able to do anything other than charge the phone from my pc, or not being able to mass delete contacts on the sim card (after transferring to the phone). In fact the contact list in general isn't very intuitive. It's managable but other phones do it much better, like my old spv c500 or just about any nokia. The memory is low, but you dont buy a £40 phone for storing music on. For everything a phone of this price should do, the L6 does it well and with style. definitely value for money and if you're only interested in calling people and sending messages, its really hard to fault. The only people who aren't happy with this phone seem to be 'l33t' teenagers who have problems spelling and who expect the earth for £40. It would be wise to ignore them!

The point of this phone is it is stylish ok, this aint a phone with exepensive features i mean if you want a camera go buy a camera if you want a mp3 player buy an ipod stop thinking you get like £1k worth of technology in a phone and for it to be the dogs. THis phone is fine its made for people who want a stylish phone to make calls and txt which this does is fine, all this rubbish about features at the end of the day you dont need them and if you brought this phone thinking you were getting a good camera etc then more fool you, its a good phone it does what its made to do make calls and txt which is what mobiles phones are primerally for ok not all this seapping pic, vids and ringtones rubbish.

Im gonna tell you about everything on the phone. The camera is actually quite good if its in outdoor light. The video camera is a bit blotchy and only records 34 seconds, it also only records in like half the screen. The sound quality is quite good but when you put earphones in, the music is VERY VERY loud and its hard to find the volume control. There is like no space on the phone, you can buy a memory card but its pure expensive. Its cool the way you can organise the menu the way you want. Its practically indestructible apart from the back panel. The keys are fine with cool luminous outline. The texts are fine but not very long. Its a practical, quite easy to work phone with a nice design. If you want this phone i think you should reconsider and pick another but if you are one of these people who only wants it to phone people and nuthing else, then i reccomment it!

Just got this phone recently after debating on whether to get this or the Nokia 6070. And I have to say I made the right choice. It is sleek, stylish, and serves its functions well. The camera, although non-megapixel, is good - I'll buy a digicam if I need excellent quality pix. At first I was tentative about the memory. I mean, 10MB shared among all the data? How will I fit the MP3's I wanted to use as my ringtones? I may have just found a way! What you have to do is convert your MP3 file into into 40kbps stream so the size will go down. You can barely recognize the difference from the higher kbps stream MP3's. The call and SMS functionality are just like any other phone so there is nothing to complain or praise about that... But the biggest difference that let me choose this over the 6070 is the Bluetooth. I read somewhere that the BT is slow or it isn't working... to hell with you guys, it works fine. I've been moving files to and from my phone to my PC for the past two we eks and there hasn't been any snag. Of course it will SEEM slow if the file you're moving is gargantuan! Any other data-transfer device will take time to transfer large files, you know! All I know is that for it's price (it costs around $100), it is a phone with great features. I've gotten nothing but praises from people since I got this phone. Probably one negative comment but that guy didn't know any better.

the motorola l6 is slim and nice to hold, but many of the reviews don`t mention the fact that this phone is very pc friendly. coupled with motorola phone software you can transfer mp3 files and 3g files to and from your pc with ease via a usb lead. the usb socket on the phone is the same as your digital camera or tom tom sat nav and the phone charges itself from your computer while you are transfering files, get this phone from orange main dealers as you can buy it for fifty quid if you trade in your old phone. the camera and video modes are good and battery life is around 6 days unless you use the video a lot then around 4 days. as the razr opens out to the size of a housebrick the l6 is a nicer phone to use and very good value for money.

Then again, it was almost 200 quid more expensive. SO! On the whole it's a good little phone, I love how thin and light it is, and think it looks pretty cool, but still, reminds me of the old brick mobiles of the 80s n 90s. I think the camera and video quality suck, but the phone is super cheap and if you only want to grab a quick reminder I guess there ok. People that complain about the camera I see nothing wrong with it, it is just people expect so much out of £70. But for the picture quality those people want your looking at £200+ phones but to be honest would u take a camera phone on a holiday trip instead of a home video camera. I would give the L6 10/10 for price and the look, and features. For people who say you would go for features then style you stay with your brick :). But if u want more features such as a big memory go for it's new counterpart the L7.
