LG Viewty Smart

Product Rating

LG Viewty Smart The Viewty Smart is a much upgraded version of the original Viewty. But some users are experiencing a problem with the screen blanking out on calls. Try removing the screen protector, if you have one. Otherwise, one of our users, Geoff_W suggests the following solution.

1. On the phone keypad enter the following code: 1809#*900# to bring up the engineering settings menu. 2. Scroll down to the entry called OTHERS and select it. 3. Scroll down this menu to the entry called PROXIMITY and select it. 4. You should see three options: Enable, Disable & Start Calibration 5. Select Start Calibration - after a few seconds it will return a new figure (mine was 3627) 6. BACK right out of the menu system, and make a test call - it should blank the screen when you hold it to your ear (or when you hold a finger near the sensor), but come back on again when you remove it. But BEWARE - doing this may well void your warranty!

Features of the LG Viewty Smart include:

  • Camera: 8 megapixel camera with autofocus and Intelligent Shot Mode
  • Video Camera: Video calling, QVGA 120fps video capture, DivX/Xvid playback
  • Display: Full touchscreen, 480 X 800 pixels (3.0 inches)

Well I bought this phone knowing full well it had errors, but thought that this was a common thing on all handsets so decided to buy! I'm really glad I did, the phone is sleek and stylish to look at and also extremely easy to use! I too had the problem with the screen going blank but did what Geoff said and know it works perfectly. I used to own the original Viewty but the Viewty smart is a much better phone, the touch screen works fine and is definitely an improvement on the old one which used to require you to press very hard. The camera, which is the main reason I bought the phone, is excellent! The auto focus works really well when trying to photograph a moving object like my 3 month old puupy! Overall I think this phone is a must and well worth the money spent!

got this phone from play.com on 20/2/10 and had 'screen disappearing' problems when making and receiving calls. updated it this morning thru lg software update and it seems to be fine now. before updated i did not have 'proximity sensor' option on 'phone settings', but it has now appeared! had abit of a problem getting pc to recognise phone as it kept saying usb drivers were not installed, but persevered and the update seems to have done the trick. i had the old viewty for 2 years and really enjoyed its ease of use. this new gc900 is lovely to work with, although the keyboard typing when texting is alot more sensitive than the ku990, but i've changed to traditional way of inputting and its not too bad. t9 gets on my wick though. camera is quicker than ku990 and seems to be better quality, love the voice command dialing too. funny thing, i rang lg to get advice about screen disappearing when making/receiving calls and the lady i spoke to said she "oh yeah i th ink i heard something about that, but i'm not sure, although there is a software update for your model". i think lg must not be admitting to this problem, i don't see why because i found it reletively easy to fix. hope i'm gona enjoy this phone and i hope you all do too!

Geoff mate, THANK YOU. I got this phone a couple of months ago and - because I don't phone as much as I text - it took me a while before realising that the screen done that blanking out thing. That especially annoyed me because it forced me to phone ppl back and use up all of my free minutes. Literally JUST tried the thing that Geoff and it woked straight away. No idea what the number was though it was different from Geoff's. Don't see how it could mess up your phone but, if he says, 'be careful' then I guess you should.

Thought it was ok initially and then tried the few applications and games that are around and it's like waiting for christmas for it to operate. The normal interface is also pretty slow when waiting for screens to change and pop-up. Battery time is rubbish at best if you're doing any browsing. Camera is on the other hand outstanding. Video recording is also outstanding BUT video replay is an issue in that when you hold it portrait style it opens in landscape and vice-versa resulting in you looking like a twit when trying to view the video with your head at a 90degree angle. Need to lay it flat on the table to view whatever way you want. Having trouble each time trying to connect phone to laptop. Have uninstalled and re-installed PC Suite a few times with no success. The connection seems to be hit and miss. The organiser is another dose considering you can't just input and time for a new schedule. You have to set the finish time and the start time and also set wheth er you want it to alarm or not (who wants to set a reminder without an alarm ??). There is no option to set your standard preferences. It needs to be done each and every time you set a new schedule. Only for the camera I give it a 3. Tsk...roll on the new iphone....

I love this phone. It's expensive, but worth it for a decent touch screen phone. However, there are some basic things on this phone which it doesn't even have! 1) You can't forward a text someone has sent you. But you can forward texts you yourself have sent. 2) You can't save a number from a text. So are you supposed to remember it and type it in?! 3) You can't edit contacts unless you go about doing it by going to use a photo as a 'contact image' where you do that and then edit your contact that way. I mean how can that be the only option to edit a contact, say if you've spelt their name wrong? :S 4) If you watch youtube videos, they are in reallyyyyy bad quality. Which is rubbish considering how brilliant this phone is. If anyone has any solutions or replies to what i've put, please quote me in a review!

I've had the phone, my first touch screen, for about a month and am quite impressed with it in general. I am a little disappointed with the camera, I was expecting better results, it certainly will not replace a compact digital even one with limited megapix. The phone is on virgin and I have had none of the reported problems, screen going blank, freezing etc. I am not a heavy or proficient texter but I find texting really quite easy on both landscape and portrait even though I have extra large man hands. I've installed Opera Mini and browsing the web is easy and fast, much better than the default browser. I think the manual is quite poor. While it might explain how to change most things it doesn't tell you what to change things to or why you might need to. I still can't find out how to lock the screen whereby someone picking the phone up would need a code to use it, maybe it's just me and I'm missing something obvious. All in all seems to be a good phone. I have it on contract but I think I would have been quite disappointed if I had paid payg / sim free price for it.

Had this phone as an upgrade. Used to have a samsung tocco which i loved until it started playing up with the usual freezing etc. I had the same problems as others when I had this phone. The screen blanking when making/receiving calls. I found out a few ways around it. First as explained by Geoff, i took the screen protector off but then I also found out that you must hold the phone at a certain angle for it to light up again. I either hold it upright or lay it flat. A pain but it works. The internet is also quite slow on it. Apart from these minor problems the phone is great. It has many great features and the camera is excellent. The music player is also fantastic. Its louder, clearer and much easier to use compared to other phones I have had.

This phone has started to annoy me after 2 months. It shut itself down and I had to take out the battery and then replace it in order to restart the phone. The last time it shut down as I was answering the phone. I can assure you that its not because the battery is flat. I took it to Vodafone (where I got my phone); the first time, a female sales assistant told me that "Smart" phone does that, its an automatic shutdown. The second time, another sales assistant told me that it needs to be send to LG to get fixed but couldn't tell me what the problem is. Apparently according to the second sales assistant, their job is to sell phones and its not their job to find out the problem is. I think we should have better technician working in the stores.

It blanks out when you receive/make a call, very irritating feature (but geoff_w comments helped me to get rid of this issue). thanks again..

I have had this phone since the day it came out - the first one out of the shop. After changing it 3 times I seem to have got a good one. Only a couple of times has the screen frozen and I have had to remove the battery - a pain when you have a hard case on it. However, I have had the odd occassion when the screen did not come on when I received a call, only a real pain when the caller withheld the number. The main problem I have had is answering a call and not being able to slide the button across, either because my hands were slightly wet or another reason which I havent fathomed out. However, on reading the comments below, last night I bit the bullet, after seriously contemplating selling the phone which I love (apart from this slider button) and upgraded the software. It went from v10b to v10h. It took ages but I now have buttons to touch to answer the call. I dont know why it has an SMS button and reject - cant you just press the bar at the bottom as be fore? But hopefully the phone is much more usable and I can even callibrate the proximity sensor if required easily from the settings menu. If you havent upgraded your phones software - do, but I cant find anywhere what else has changed. Any clues where to look? All in all I am now going to keep this phone, I love the touch screen :0)

This phone is unbearable!!! After having the Viewty I was excited to upgrade to the Viewty Smart in October so much that I barely even looked around at other phones. I had NO problems with my Viewty, it was AMAZING! I want it back! Because this phone is just appalling. In just 3 months I am on to my 3rd replacement, I have given up taking it back because all 3 have had the same problem. Occassionally freezes in the middle of texting, and just loves to turn itself off at random. My brother suggested trying a software update, my luck didn't get any better because the software wouldn't update. I love the phone when its working, its design and layout is all excellent but it is so infuriating when it freezes after writing a long text and having to write it all again. If only I could upgrade the software I might be happy with it but for now I just can't give it any more than 1 star because I surely can't be so unlucky that I got 3 dodgy phones in a row!

When this phone lets you use it, it's excellent. Unfortunately, I'm finding that most of the time I need to do something on it, i.e. read a text, add something to the Calendar, it just vibrates when I hit the relevant icon and does nothing else! At this point I can't even turn the phone off! I have to replace the battery to get it working again. I've had 2 of these and upgraded the firmware on both as I assumed these issues would have been fixed, but no. I love the look and feel of this phone and love the way it works... when it works! But, a phone that doesn't respond when I need it to is completely useless. I'd give this 0 stars if I could!

I got myself the LG Viewty Smart as I really loved the old Viewty (Prada) phone. The main reason was the 8 mega pixel camera and the stylish look of the phone, but having had it 6 months, it drives me mad and I wish I had never got a touch screen. The screen would freeze when there was an incoming call and I would have to cut the person off to try and answer it, the screen would also freeze as would the phone. I have now changed my handset and the new handset seems to have slightly different features, you don't slide to accept a call now you press a button on the front instead which is much better and the keys on the screen look slightly different, but alas, the new phone seems to have problems, it doesn't seem to recognise you touching the screen now and is really rather slow which was always a problem. I will be sending it back to Orange, so if you are looking at the LG then get the one where you can actually press buttons!!!!

Also this is now going to be my 3rd one of these phones as they all keep cutting out during calls or freezing when I am writing a text or just doing anything on the phone and then it doesnt even switch back on I have to remove the battery then put it back then it will switch back on....to be honest a complete nightmare really i wish i would have got the iphone or the satio as i noww am in a 2 year contract and am stuck with phone, please avoid this phone.

I love the viewty smart phone although i have had problems with it. As regards those who have problems with predictive text, not being able to turn it off, just press t9 it comes on and goes off with pressing it. To those who have problems forwarding a message, when you receive a message there are 3 buttons in view at the bottom of it these are (reply, quick reply, delete) If you scroll these to the left you will find 8 more buttons one of them being the (forward) button. As regards making a phone call and blank screen, i find that if i have to press numbers during a call, i move it from my ear and a numerical keyboard appears. My only problem is since an update to version GC900AT_V10h (a lot of my problems have been fixed) except i have now got an EDITING problem with a triangle saying file cannot be opened. Am hoping this will be sorted as i dont want any other phone but this one. would give it 5 stars but for this fault. ALthough i have the same update version as someone else on here, i dont have the music problems as the other person has, sorry but ive forgotten the name.

i bought this phone about 3 weeks ago now and it was running fine and loved it! however one night i was recieving a call and the screen went black and the phone vibrated like crazy and wouldnt stop. i pressed buttons and touched the screen yet nothing worked. i took the battery out and put it back in and turned it on and it started to vibrate again with a black screen. i took it back to carphone warehouse and they exchanged it for a new one. the new one was working fine untill two days ago i recieved a text and i recived it 8 times and i couldnt read any of them. it wouldnt allow me view any of my other messages either or create messages. i have since returned it and now waiting for my THIRD lg viewty smart. it is a great phone and i love the style and im hoping that im just unlucky and that this is not a wide spread problem. hopefully 3rd time lucky...

I was a bit cautious about buying this phone, after having read all the reviews about the screen blacking out on incoming calls, and general unreliable-ness!! However, I decided to take the plunge and get this phone as it seemed really good, and going by lots of reviews it seemed for most people it was problem free. I must say I am so glad I did, as it is one amazing phone!! As soon as I had it all up and running I tested a few calls and edited a few images (as read that these were the things going wrong on some people's handsets) and it all ran smoothly. The interface really is awesome, so smooth, responsive and the high-res screen really is jaw-dropping! I got it sim-free after much googleing and my software version is: GC900AT_V10b. The web browser, camera, googlemaps etc are all first class, very pleased! As well as being a super device, it looks stunning, I have it in black/silver and it is gorgeous. Very pleased I bought this phone, good value for money as it seems one of the slickest and best phones on the market - fingers crossed it doesn't play up on me!

After reading all the reviews below, I just can't believe that Orange are still selling this Viewty Smart GC900 mobile with this blank screen fault. My daughter has been in and out of our local Orange shop trying to get this problem sorted out. Orange refuse to acknowledge there is a problem, and she has been given the complete run a round since the new contract was taken out. She has been asked to download upgrades to the software on three occasions and assured that it would fix the problem, it hasn't. She has tried to return the phone for a replacement which Orange have refused to do saying the 28 day return warranty has now run out and they are only prepared to send the mobile for repair. The will also not be providing her with a mobile to use unless she pays Orange £50.00 deposit. Don't try to find Orange Head Office to complain, or even an email address, they don't appear to exist, and you won't get any information from the shop either. My advise is, stay away from Orange, and stay away from the LG Viewty Smart GC900. I suggest you buy something that does what it's supposed to, makes and receives telephone calls.

Had this phone for a week now but it will be going back. Don't get me wrong this is a very good phone but it's not really a smart phone in my eyes & this was the reason I bought it. The camera is exceptional as is the video recording, the auto settings are good but if you know your cameras & the settings this then becomes awesome & the picture quality & detail are as good as the best standalone 8MP cameras. Menus are easy to navigate, some things take exploring like finding the forward option on the texts. Battery life is excellent even when using the net or making calls heavily. The problem with the phone is it isn't really a Smartphone. The Internet is poor it doesn't use the xhtml much & automatically switches back to wap & you have no control over this. The screen automatically defaults to a very small size once the pages load & you constantly have to zoom in. The screen isn't very responsive when using the Internet. If you have large fingers the QWERTY keypad is difficult to use as the size of the tap buttons favours nibble smaller fingers. The standard keypad is very good however, very responsive & actually easier than a conventional touch button. No app store for this in the UK either, LG have released ones in other countries but not made it hear yet. The plastic touch screen is very weak & I believe if you have it in your back pocket & sit down it will crack easily. I love the design but a stronger screen is required. It is a very good phone but should not be classed as a Smartphone, this is however is one of the best around in the non Smartphone market.

Only one complaint. The old viewty had a stylus, or you could even use a blunt pencil when texting. But with large fingers like mine texting can be a bit of a hit or a miss. Apart from that it is a great looking phone (Silver) and its performance is great

I have had this phone since the beginning of september and whilst at first I loved it, I now hate it with a passion! The screen on mine goes blank when a call comes in, the slide to answer a call is ridiculous and tempermental, the touch screen is also tempermantal, and also when the screen goes landscape when you turn the phone it messes up and freezes. The texting is really slow and riddled with problems, for example you are always accidently changing the language and when you spell a word the T9 doesn't understand, sometimes it replaces the first word at the beginning of the text with your new word. Argh! A totally wasted upgrade, I ended up going out today and spending £100 on a new nokia 6303 and it's brilliant.

I'm now on viewty smart number 6, all manner of faults from unable to answer calls to no signal, then camera packs up, drops calls the list is endless. Sad thing is i love the phone's features is just bloody useless being relyable, orange are on the same par as the phone, they blow smoke when you complain, it must cost them a fortune to run a clearly over worked complaints dept. The phone is a good gadget but it will pack up on you sooner rather than later. Going to try the samsung see how that fairs.

Nice phone if it works properly! have just sent mine in for an exchange, it kept freezing up and the only way to re-boot it was to take out the battery!! I like this phone and hope my replacement works!! I also had problems playing Divx, sometimes it would play, other times it says 'not supported' and then nothing will play on the phone, not 3gp or even sounds are 'supported' before it freezes and you have to reconnect the battery. useless!!! I hope it was just a one off and the next one doesnt give me similar problems! Does anyone know of any issues playing divx on this phone? or why when you have delivery report turned on (text messages) nothing happens (no report)?

this is an amazing phone. the camera is the best ive ever seen on a phone, in fact its better than my 10MP digital camera!. it has so much you can do on it. and when first buying it i knew it was good for its photo and film side, but i also wanted a phone which was good for other things such as music, games and other things (internet etc). and many reviews only had information about the camera on them, which made me a little unsure when buying the phone, but now i see that its all amazing and the touch screen is great, had no problems, you can adjust the sensitivity to your liking and you can personalise each screen to make the phone more of a phone than just a piece of chunky junk that texts and calls. no wayyy!!! it's so much more than that!!!. and people who are complaining about the screen going black 1. if your with orange and got the phone with orange, then this is probabally why because there is something wrong with them when orange is used in this phone. 2. if you have a protective screen on the phone, remove it as sometimes it can block sensors on the phone making it go black. 3. done all this, ?? if yes and it still goes black, take it to the shop and theyre happy to change it :):) great phone i dont know a phone thats better at the moment :):):):):)
