LG Viewty Smart
Product Rating
The Viewty Smart is a much upgraded version of the original Viewty. But some users are experiencing a problem with the screen blanking out on calls. Try removing the screen protector, if you have one. Otherwise, one of our users, Geoff_W suggests the following solution.
1.
On the phone keypad enter the following code: 1809#*900# to bring
up the engineering settings menu. 2. Scroll down to the entry called
OTHERS and select it. 3. Scroll down this menu to the entry called
PROXIMITY and select it. 4. You should see three options: Enable,
Disable & Start Calibration 5. Select Start Calibration - after
a few seconds it will return a new figure (mine was 3627) 6. BACK
right out of the menu system, and make a test call - it should blank
the screen when you hold it to your ear (or when you hold a finger
near the sensor), but come back on again when you remove it. But BEWARE - doing this may well void your warranty!

Reviewed by beverley on 19/07/2011 I loved this phone for the first few days and then the problems began, the software for the phone to transfer pics from phone to pc does not work, the camera and video camera work when they feel like it, you touch the icon and for a brief second the camera screen starts to load and then it just flicks back to the homescreen, same with the video camera, it can do this more than 50 times before it actually switches to camera. I missed my daughter's races on sports day because of this issue, not a happy Mummy. Rating:

Battery dies within seconds, phone crashes on a daily basis and you can't change the theme which annoys me because i hate seeing blake every time i open the phone. Even the camera is terrible, there is a delay in taking a picture and often the object or what ever it is has gone or moved, extremely frustrating. Reviewed by CagsD on 15/02/2011 The worst phone I have EVER had in my life, I have had it for just over a year and had no end of problems with it - cannot believe I still have to put up with it for another 5 months!!! It constantly loses signal for no good reason - eg. if it is in a pocket or bag. What is the point of a mobile that you have to carry in your hand to maintain signal?? Often it will even be showing full signal but when my husband is trying to phone me it will tell him the phone is unavailable. We are both on Virgin so it's not a network problem, it's this stupid phone. OK the camera is great, but that's about its only redeeming feature. I got it thinking it was going to be a Smart Phone (hence the name) but it's anything but. It does next to nothing, and is utterly useless. The battery frequently dies on me - as has been mentioned above, it only gives about 3 warning beeps and then goes - not good when you are out and about. Texting is a pain, scrolling through numbers is a pain, using the internet is well near useless - can't log in properly on Facebook as the login box is too tiny for fingers to home in on. Aaaaaaaaaaargh I can't even begin to express how much I hate this phone!!! My advice is to avoid it like the plague. Rating:

Reviewed by Jonnie on 16/12/2010 I have had this phone for nearly 18 months now, and it certainly shows. It decides to freeze quite regularly, and often you cannot do simple tasks, such as answer the phone. The touch screen is very temperamental and the userface has become 'clunky'. For the first six months, it was an alright touch-screen phone, but I certainly wouldn't call it 'smart' Rating:
Reviewed by nicky s on 01/12/2010 Very poor phone. I had the original viewty (after using a friends to try it) and was happy with that, but this is a huge step back. Huge! And annoyingly I assumed it would be a step up from the viewty. The new capacitive screen and software are very poorly implemented, and of course you cant use a stylus, so my big fingers fail miserably. It integrates with nothing in particular. Web browsing is so slow and using multi-touch to zoom in/out is purely there to annoy you - a clear case of adding a feature that other phones have without bothering to get it to work first. Although the screen does auto-rotate, it only does that sometimes with some applications, it usually forces you to read/interact in a certain way. The gallery is awful, all the video files i have on it show up with no identifying mark other than their date : its hopeless trying to find anything. I am generally annoyed at how unusable the whole thing is. I can only assume this phone is getting good reviews from people who have not had a phone with a decent camera (e.g. sony c903, which easily beats this dreadfully slow phone at everything except megapixels) and have never had a go of an iphone or HTC phone which beat it at absolutely everything else by an enormous margin. This is worth noting because it is clearly trying to compete with those sorts of phones and is embarrassingly far from doing so. I got this on a contract, I'm stuck with it for a year unless I pay off the contract. If I used a phone much I would pay off the contract, but I don't its useable - its not fun though, its a chore. I rate this phone 1 star because that is labelled as "poor" on this site - 2 stars is "average" and having used other phones of this type, "average" would be too high a rating. Rating:
Reviewed by Ant B on 15/11/2010 If I could leave a negative rating for the LG Viewty Smart I would. This has to be the least user firendly phone I've ever had, and I've had a lot! I've gone from spending between £60 and £70 a month to £9 as I cant stand to use the device, the camera lense is poor the camera software is worse. It's impossible to to answer calls as you need the screen to do that and the screen hardware and software deactivates and only work when they feel like it! I've had replacemnets and they are all the same. I am aware of two other people with these handsets (one of them my wife) and they all have the same thing to say about this iPhone wannabe. The worst mobile phone experience in the 18 years that I've had mobiles! (told you I'd had a few). I will be very cautious before buying from LG again. Rating:
Reviewed by Tom on 06/11/2010 Several things have gone wrong since I had this phone. On a regular basis the touch screen deactiviates when a call comes through, so I am unable to answer the call. It frequently changes profile settings by itself- silencing my ringtone so I miss calls and texts. It switches itself off sometimes. For the first time today, it even changed the date! It is simply badly made- for example a translation issue means that when my inbox is nearly full a message comes up that says '95% of text message is filled' If all these problems didn't exist, then this phone would be superb. However as they do, I am looking into buying a new phone as soon as possible. Rating:

Reviewed by Pete on 21/09/2010 Well I have had my LG Viewty Smart for about 3 months now. The only problem that I have come across is that it locks up now and then. Reviewed by Thomas Manning on 15/09/2010 In a nutshell, this phone is good for just about everything except calling which is really what a phone is for, the camera is outstanding, both for stills and video, (dvd resolution filming) the touch screen is heat sensitive rather than touch so is a dream to use and feels much smoother than most touch sensitive phones. The GPS is good however it doesn't give you directions and sometimes it can only estimate your location to within 2400M (usually its more accurate than this) The wifi on it is a dream, its actually more reliable than my laptop. Almost every aspect of the home screens and menus are customisable so is very flexible and makes it easy to find things. It comes with a converter to convert videos to the dalby format it specialises in (although it does take many other formats) however one of the settings on this converter (mobile theatre) is not actually compatible with the phone so I'm not sure what the point of it is, however the converter does work find changing it to mobile format. Sound quality is excellent as is the screen quality, I have watched several films on this phone without any difficulty seeing what is happening on the screen. The only flaw is that the proximity sensor is broken (it actually senses light to detect whether its next to your ear or not) to go through automated menus I have to hold it up next to a 25w halogen bulb. Even if it did work it would mean you cant answer a call if its dark so its rather a useless feature anyway, shame there is no setting to turn it off. I found the Qwerty keyboard on this phone more difficult to use than on the last lg viewty and the predictive texting turns on every time you start to write a text and if you don't use is you have to turn it off each and every time there is no way to disable it. All in all a good everything, except phone. Rating:

Reviewed by Elliemay on 29/08/2010 I've had this phone for a while now and I love it! There is a solution to pretty much all of the problems people seem to be having; -Screen blanking out during calls: Geoff's answer was really helpful, but if you're worried it might damage your phone, I wouldn't risk it. The screen can be brought back from a blank by simply touching it with a finger. There is not really a problem here. -Low battery life: Touchscreen smartphones are always expected to get through battery power quickly. This phone doesn't seem to have any problem here. Its features are fantastic and they honestly don't use that much battery compared to other smartphones! However, I have noticed some other problems that people haven't mentioned so far; -The phone sometimes turns itself off randomly and 'restars'. I have experienced this at some pretty annoying times like when I am using the internet, but so far it hasn't happened during a call. Does anyone know why this is happening? -The camera is EXCELLENT, don't get me wrong, but every now and again when I'm taking a picture the camera just goes completely blurry. At first I thought the lens might need cleaning but this doesn't always work. A lot of the time I have to close the camera and re-open it to get rid of the blurred picture. Other times, the image on the screen looks blurry until the picture is actually taken, then it turns nice and sharp how it should be. If anyone has any solutions or reasoning that might help me, it would be appreciated! x Rating:

Reviewed by Mary on 17/08/2010 This is an awful example of a handset. Every possible thing that could frustrate the phone user is embodied in this stupid piece of "technology". It systematically switches itself off whenever it sees fit, it loses signal for no clear reason, the touchscreen technology appears to have a mind of its own and it 'loses' data that has been saved on it. All in all, I'm 6 months into an 18 month contract and I'm getting rid of it before I destroy it in a fit of frustrated rage! Rating:
Reviewed by Timothy on 08/08/2010 This phone initially felt very good. It was lightweight, had a good camera, good memory etc. But after a few months, I couldn;t work out why I wasn't getting used to it. Then I began to realise that rather than the problem being me, it was actually because the phone is awful beyond description at doing the most simple of things. Of course, having software is very nice, but who really uses the movie maker? I would rather have a phone which doesn't force stress levels through the roof when trying to send a text. The touch screen is poor (having tried the touch screen on the iPhone I can say quite honestly that the Viewty is very bad in comparison), the screen sometimes freezes when you need to accept a call which causes you to miss it; the call and contacts are both located in a very close proximity to one another and are both green which means that half the time you end up pressing the wrong button. You can easliy disconnect yourself due to the lag on the screen whil st in a call - this normally happens whe you've been on hold for ages with a company and then need to "press 1". To do that you have to hope that the screen unlocks from the call, then press dial pad......wait for the lag of the dial pad coming up, then press one. If however you then have to press another button to progress in the call, you move the phone away from your ear, the screen unlocks revealing the dial pad. Unfortunately, the dial pad then turns to the main call screen after two seconds of lag and just as you try and "press 3", that button is replaced by the "end call" button. Thusly, the call is ended and you want to cry. Although this seems liike a very bad rant, it is a culmination of the months of agony I have endured with handset which texts the wrong people when a message is sending to someone else, meaning if you need to send two texts to two people, you send the first one, then the seemingly send the second one, but in fact both go to the first person. Oh, finally, the battery. This is the worst phone I know for battery life. A day maybe two, ever since I got this damn thing. It also give about ten minutes warning before dying on you. Three low battery warnings then it dies. Not very helpful. Overall, I can honestly say that you would be crazy to get this phone, or for that matter any other LG phone as they seemingly commit no time to product testing to improve user friendliness. Get the iPhone or use a string and two cups. either way you'll have more success! Rating:

Reviewed by bohemia on 29/04/2010 I got the Lg Viewty Smart yesterday on a £10 Virgin contract. Now I am not someone who writes emails on a mobile (why should anyone, I mean for that you're always better off using your laptop) and I also prefer to read news/watch 'you tube' on my laptop. So I can't say anything about these functions. What I can say though: it looks great and I haven't found a cell phone that looks better (apart from i-phones). The camera is great, the pictures I took are all briliant and the editing software is fun. Most importantly for me, the sound of the music player is excellent. Dolby gives it a better sound than I get on my Sony Ericsson W595 - a dedicated walkman phone. Ok, it doesn't have 'sense me' but it doesn't really matter - what matters is the sound and it really couldn't be better. It's my first touch phone and it took me a total of 30 minutes to get used to it; the interface is easy to use, the maps are fine and I really can't find fault with the phone. I give it a 5 out of 5. Maybe it doesn't quite cut it for those who need lots of apps; however, if you are like me and are mainly interested in a good quality mobile with an excellent camera and outstanding sound quality, then I can only recommend it. PS: Strange to me: most of the professional reviewers don't mention the sound quality of mp3 and the radio as it is one of its best features. I was worried about buying an LG phone as I listen to music a lot and couldn't find any info about it. I am delighted that I bought this phone. Je ne regret rien. Rating:

The alarms decide they are not going to go off when set for no readily apparant reason whatsoever. cannot work out why sometimes they work, sometimes they dont. end up setting 3 at a time, 2 mins apart, just to make sure one will go off. sometimes when trying to type a message you have to touch the screen about an inch to the left of where the buttons are displayed The accelerometers are rubbish web browsing is rubbish the games on the phone are rubbish the lack of 3.5 mm jack is annoying on the plus side the camera is good but that is nowhere near enough to redeem this phone. I regret every day that I chose this phone over an Iphone. Rating:

I used to own the original Viewty but the Viewty smart is a much better phone, the touch screen works fine and is definitely an improvement on the old one which used to require you to press very hard. The normal interface is also pretty slow when waiting for screens to change and pop-up. Battery time is rubbish at best if you're doing any browsing. Camera is on the other hand outstanding. Video recording is also outstanding BUT video replay is an issue in that when you hold it portrait style it opens in landscape and vice-versa resulting in you looking like a twit when trying to view the video with your head at a 90degree angle. Need to lay it flat on the table to view whatever way you want. Having trouble each time trying to connect phone to laptop. Have uninstalled and re-installed PC Suite a few times with no success. The connection seems to be hit and miss. The organiser is another dose considering you can't just input and time for a new schedule. You have to set the finish time and the start time and also set wheth er you want it to alarm or not (who wants to set a reminder without an alarm ??). There is no option to set your standard preferences. It needs to be done each and every time you set a new schedule. Only for the camera I give it a 3. Tsk...roll on the new iphone.... Rating:

Reviewed by Annabel on 17/01/2010 I love this phone. It's expensive, but worth it for a decent touch screen phone. However, there are some basic things on this phone which it doesn't even have! 1) You can't forward a text someone has sent you. But you can forward texts you yourself have sent. 2) You can't save a number from a text. So are you supposed to remember it and type it in?! 3) You can't edit contacts unless you go about doing it by going to use a photo as a 'contact image' where you do that and then edit your contact that way. I mean how can that be the only option to edit a contact, say if you've spelt their name wrong? :S 4) If you watch youtube videos, they are in reallyyyyy bad quality. Which is rubbish considering how brilliant this phone is. If anyone has any solutions or replies to what i've put, please quote me in a review! Rating:

Reviewed by Andy on 12/01/2010 I've had the phone, my first touch screen, for about a month and am quite impressed with it in general. I am a little disappointed with the camera, I was expecting better results, it certainly will not replace a compact digital even one with limited megapix. The phone is on virgin and I have had none of the reported problems, screen going blank, freezing etc. I am not a heavy or proficient texter but I find texting really quite easy on both landscape and portrait even though I have extra large man hands. I've installed Opera Mini and browsing the web is easy and fast, much better than the default browser. I think the manual is quite poor. While it might explain how to change most things it doesn't tell you what to change things to or why you might need to. I still can't find out how to lock the screen whereby someone picking the phone up would need a code to use it, maybe it's just me and I'm missing something obvious. All in all seems to be a good phone. I have it on contract but I think I would have been quite disappointed if I had paid payg / sim free price for it. Rating:

Used to have a samsung tocco which i loved until it started playing up with the usual freezing etc. I had the same problems as others when I had this phone. The screen blanking when making/receiving calls. I found out a few ways around it. First as explained by Geoff, i took the screen protector off but then I also found out that you must hold the phone at a certain angle for it to light up again. I either hold it upright or lay it flat. A pain but it works. The internet is also quite slow on it. Apart from these minor problems the phone is great. It has many great features and the camera is excellent. The music player is also fantastic. Its louder, clearer and much easier to use compared to other phones I have had. Rating:
Reviewed by Steve on 04/01/2010 This phone has started to annoy me after 2 months. It shut itself down and I had to take out the battery and then replace it in order to restart the phone. The last time it shut down as I was answering the phone. I can assure you that its not because the battery is flat. I took it to Vodafone (where I got my phone); the first time, a female sales assistant told me that "Smart" phone does that, its an automatic shutdown. The second time, another sales assistant told me that it needs to be send to LG to get fixed but couldn't tell me what the problem is. Apparently according to the second sales assistant, their job is to sell phones and its not their job to find out the problem is. I think we should have better technician working in the stores. Reviewed by Catherine on 03/01/2010 I have had this phone since the day it came out - the first one out of the shop. After changing it 3 times I seem to have got a good one. Only a couple of times has the screen frozen and I have had to remove the battery - a pain when you have a hard case on it. However, I have had the odd occassion when the screen did not come on when I received a call, only a real pain when the caller withheld the number. The main problem I have had is answering a call and not being able to slide the button across, either because my hands were slightly wet or another reason which I havent fathomed out. However, on reading the comments below, last night I bit the bullet, after seriously contemplating selling the phone which I love (apart from this slider button) and upgraded the software. It went from v10b to v10h. It took ages but I now have buttons to touch to answer the call. I dont know why it has an SMS button and reject - cant you just press the bar at the bottom as be fore? But hopefully the phone is much more usable and I can even callibrate the proximity sensor if required easily from the settings menu. If you havent upgraded your phones software - do, but I cant find anywhere what else has changed. Any clues where to look? All in all I am now going to keep this phone, I love the touch screen :0) Rating:

I want it back! Because this phone is just appalling. In just 3 months I am on to my 3rd replacement, I have given up taking it back because all 3 have had the same problem. Occassionally freezes in the middle of texting, and just loves to turn itself off at random. My brother suggested trying a software update, my luck didn't get any better because the software wouldn't update. I love the phone when its working, its design and layout is all excellent but it is so infuriating when it freezes after writing a long text and having to write it all again. At this point I can't even turn the phone off! I have to replace the battery to get it working again. I've had 2 of these and upgraded the firmware on both as I assumed these issues would have been fixed, but no. I love the look and feel of this phone and love the way it works... when it works!
