I bought one on pay and go and its totally worth it. Great slick interface. Great internet functions.Looks fantastic . Good phone quality but a basic camera. Text messages are easy with the rotating landscape keyboard even for people like be with big fingers. The apps are fantastic fun and the games are great as well. The i pod is great and with slick links with things like facebook and youtube that work just great. Gps is also a godsend as well. This is what you want a gadget to be like and the i phone does not let you down. Its so easy to use. Setting up e-mail accounts was so easy. So many extra's available. Ive been used to "well thats the one and only case we do for your phone". Ok the camera is a rubbish 2 meg pixel. But even the 12 meg pixel camera on the latest Sony Satio is rubbish. Just buy a digital camera to take good photo's, these even come with a 3 x optical zoom ! for under £100. No I must say Apple, keep up the good work. The only think I find to criticize is when using the touch keypad, it is easy to press the wrong key as they are close together and I have big fingers! The battery life seems OK so far. The camera is not great, but who cares, it`s a PHONE not a Nikon D300! Overall, Apple have done a good job and it certainly looks cool! Shame about not being able to put music to a ringtone but i am astounded at some of the properties - checking your voicemail via a list, a music player which is great and the apps :) I'm still getting to grips with everything (probably as it took me about 30 mins to figure out how to insert the sim card!) but top notch all the way! Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by colin on 20/08/2009 I have had my iphone for over six months now and have to say its a brilliant phone. I owned a top of the range samsung previously and the iphone is quicker to use than that one. I admit there are a lot of things missing from this phone that apple should of added but all these can be overcome one by one. There is a software app that can make the phone do almost anything you can think of. people who dont like the text keyboard etc can simply install another text program that has a different layout. by the time you have finished the phone can be totally personalised. As someone said previously its not the megapixals that always make a better pictue, there is a camera and video application that is 10 times better that the one installed giving better pictures, zoom functions etc and the pictures are almost as good as those of a 5MP although the phone does lack a flash. My iphone is now fully personalised with ringtones, sms tones, background pictures etc, i have a full europe sat nav installed on it and have all the applications i could ever want. A lot of the apple applications are free for example i did not have a convertor program on my iphone like i had on my samsung, so i simply downloaded one from apple foc which is a far better one than the samsung. The applications that you may have to pay for are around 99p. you cant go wrong. My phone is a pay as you go and my only gripe is that when you purchase the phone you are locked onto O2 which i think is a rubbish expensive network for PAYG customers but this can be unlocked for any network. I would recommend this phone to anyone who is thinking of getting one. Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Rosie on 12/08/2009 The only downside to this phone is its size - it is big, but that is because it has a beautiful big screen, which makes internet browsing possible. I have tried to do this on my husband's Nokia 6600 - impossible on such a tiny screen! The GPS is superb, the text messaging in 'speech bubble' conversations is superb, the photo albums are brilliant, with the ability to zoom in - the camera is only 2 megapixel but quite decent pictures. I use 'proper' camera for most pics anyway. I have had lots of Nokias before this, never got very excited about mobiles, but find the iphone is SO much easier to use I would never want to go back! Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Danny on 19/06/2009 Dear Editor :o) Apart from the camera/video issue, I really can't think of what else could be missing from a Iphone....a Toaster perhaps? What I find frustrating is phones like the Nokia 5800 and Samsung HD get 5 stars even though they have their major faults and flaws. Yet in their cases, you are easily willing to overlook them....(don't even get me started on the 5800 touch screen usability or the horrendous 3.2 camera that is just as bad as the one on the iphone...if not worse)...yet the smooth running Iphone with a 2 meg camera (that actually does a very admirable job)gets 4 stars. Yes its an expensive phone but most apple products are expensive. That's not a valid reason to deduct points!! Bear in mind the Iphone is actually a very good phone, extremely user friendly, great call receptions, hardly crashes and a very very stable OS. It also excels in many areas that other phones don't (with it's apps facility alone, it deserves 5 stars) example: Hitachi makes good cheap products that would give sony a run for their cash, but you can't underrate sony products because they are marginally more expensive... which is what you seem to be doing to the iphone... Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Laura on 24/05/2009 I have never owned a smartphone before and really only used a phone before to text and phone people. Occasionally bluetoothed ringtones to and from my kids and recieved a few MMS every now and again. Borrowed the Viewty for a few days and hated it. Far too complicated and too many features. I love my ipod video and love music, so when my upgrade came i decided, what the hell, and went for the iphone on a 2 year contract never had more than a 12 month contract before! Well when the phone came, i was blown away by the quality! it feels devine in your hand, top quality and gorgeously heavy. Feels high quality. I have very long nails and was surprised that it didnt work with my nails or a stylus like the Viewty or HTC phones, so promptly cut my thumb nails off! Plus points: looks gorgeous, very expensive feel to it, excellent user interface is simplicity itself. Intuitive and FAST. Applications for almost anything including MMS!! so you CAN receive and veiw MMS messages. The applications are very reasonable from free and 59p to 20 quid. I have found contact management apps, facebook, ebay and hotmail apps, i have sinc'd all my email accounts including my microsoft exchange work email, which i have never done on any other phone! It is awesome. Internet conection is amazing and fast, the google maps is brill, and so is the weather app, i can see what the weather is doing in all my fav places (saddo!!) Negs: No bluetooth (well there is but only for carkits) no forwarding of SMS (well you can take a screenshot and MMS it or email it) and the need to have short nails (although you can now buy a stylus that works) The camera is 2mg pix and perfectly adequate for a phone cam. ITS A BLOOMIN PHONE NOT A CAMERA! you want better pics? Use a camera! I have found the features missing for me are the ones i hardly ever used. In MY opinion, the i phone is worth every penny and i adore it. If it could change a plug and mow the lawn I would MARRY IT! If it had proper MMS bluetooth and SMS forwarding (properly) then it would get 5 stars. However at Carphone Warehouse it is free on £34 per month for 2 years and that is fine by me. i was paying that for a LG k600 peice of rubbish. Thanks to a friend i have been trying out a Netbook and i can tell you its much easier, faster, reliable, pleasurable to use and cheaper. Its far less unwieldy and importantly the battery life lasts for days - a truly mobile device. Given the iPhone never works reliably as a phone anyway thats no loss and a modern budget micro mobile is superior + more reliable to the iPhone's phone functions in every way.To get my own Netbook i only have to get rid of this iPhone, but now it seems the novelty has warn off, its impracticality has been realised and everyone else is trying to get rid of their iPhones too, leaving me chained to the equivalent of a concrete block that cost me the earth but is no longer 'worth a penny'. Even using the "Loud" (LMAO) Speaker U can't hear the caller (unless the caller is in the same room with U - big fat LOL :D !!!) since its the same Non-loud speaker used to listen to music, the iPOD function is also a waste of space unless U enjoy not hearing your music with the slightest of background noise PMP!!) Good for all the fancy bells and whistles... but to be honest, pretty useless as a phone and lacking a lot of the basic functionality that you'd expect. I feel that Apple have a long way to go before they understand how to make a decent phone. The iPhone would have been a lot better enlarged into a 7 or 8 inch tablet PC style device. The touchscreen operation is, while very impressive, certainly no more impressive than any other touchscreen device that I've used. Many of the extras on here like the calendar, email functions and MP3 player capability already exist in other phones, and I have to say, for a lot less money. Google Maps is nice, and the Safari browser is nice, but again it's hard to really feel the full benefit on a phone-sized screen, hence the tablet PC comment. Here are the real downers. There's no picture messaging capability without downloading an app and paying through the nose to send pictures, the ringtones are pretty rubbish and it's very involved uploading more onto the phone, the small qwerty keyboard you're presented with will probably put you off texting very often, the interface for saving contacts and diary entries isn't very user friendly, applications will sometimes shut down for no reason, you can't take video clips and the camera itself (although there's nothing wrong with it) is certainly nothing better than what I had on my old Samsung about five years ago. All in all, Apple have produced something that has half the right ingredients - but the half it lacks happen to be the most essential ones. I bought the 3G, and quite frankly I wish I hadn't - I just feel that with its £340-odd price tag, Apple rather short changed me. Rating: ![]() Reviewed by nixon on 27/02/2009 I should have upgraded my Ipod to a Ipod Touch - more memory in that too, and stayed with my n95. It's only because I had to upgrade, and there was nothing decent on the market as nokia had rushed out the most recent phone that I decided to give Apple another go, and now I'm stuck. I'm sick of the dissapointment from these guys. I don't understand who the phone is aimed at, it's a bit of a brick for the average handbag, but then to send a text without the fingertips of a child and dexterity of a pianist becomes difficult, and then you put the predictive text into the equation and grown men begin to weep, no options, no settings. I can't manage my text history, it all looks like a facebook chat session. I can't hear the people I call properly, unless they're in the same room. Some things like the appstore are cool, but then the Ipod touch does that too. I can listen to my music - as can those people who have an Ipod touch, but to use my music as a ringtone, AHHHH!!! My N95, I connected to the computer, copied a tune, selected a tune on the phone and it was done. The Iphone, I edit the tune in Itunes as it can't be longer than 40secs, convert it, copy it, delete it rename it, copy it back to Itunes and then sync before selecting it as a ringtone FFS!!!!!!!! So in conclusion, I have a phone that doesn't work well as a phone, but the best points about it are those features available on the touch. Then you have all those little extras like GPS blah blah blah. If I can't use it for phone calls, or texting then what is the point as TOMTOMs are cheaper. I think my beef is that it reminds me of those Vauxhall Novas. It can only be driven one way - as the manufacturer intended, any other way and it ends up on it's roof!! Get an Ipod touch and stick with whatever phone you have at the moment, unless it's an Iphone and you like it. It's an upgrade to my Ipod, but a downgrade to my phone. It lacks all the basics (bluetooth, MMS, decent camera...) and that is just not acceptable for a phone of this price! What is does well it excels in, that I must admit, for example its the best MP3 player on a phone and best internet. There are also a lot of technical issues with the phone itself. The phone constantly freezes or completely blanks out. A lot of times a simple reset method can fix this but many times the phone has to be sent out to Apple for repair. In my opinion, this is definitely a love or hate it phone. I hate it, as it causes too many problems in work and its way too pricey and Apple's policies are so strict in terms of repairal and such. Just email the damm pic isn't it. This is a media center with a phone added on. The weak points... Very usable, but not great sound volume on calls. Speaker calls are too quite. No MMS, but just email pics! No video, but hell most phones, apart from the n95, vedeo is pritty rubbish. Some people don't like the camera. Personally I don't think they open there images at 100% to see the quality. The picture quality is better than on my nokia n95 in good light. Besides, there are excellent photo editors that will make your pictures look miles better than any other phone out there. Pro's and this is where the iphone rules.. The apps are simply amazing. The quality of the games (some give my DS a run for there money) are cheap and simply amazing. There are amazing pic editors that can make your pics stunning, this is coming from an SLR user as well. Music apps! I have got an mpc style drum machine on mine, as well as a deep synth. Really you need to see what apps are available on this phone, to understand why people love it so much. I have a Nokia N95, which if you need a phone for bizz or booting your server or something, is the one. For most of us spesh if you like making music, into photography and playing classic as well as contemp games..nothing even comes close to the iphone. I will wager that people that a lot of people giving it a bad review, eitehr can't afford it or just plain don't have it. I would also bet that some people might thinnk it is for suckerz that buy the next shinny toy, but they would be wrong also. It just does what it says on the box, the O.S is a rock. Now and then it is best to reboot as the memory can can full, like any other phone out there, but it has never crashed yet! and I'm using it for pritty memory intensive stuff. It should be noted that it is one app at a time pritty much. No task managers here, but then if you want that sort of thing, your missing the point of the iphone. Don't assume that people that have iphones are sheep, or don't know better. The iphone is the most fun, other than my music production equipment, that I have evr had with technology. I personally find the camera adequate - not the best on the market but very good for 2mp and perfectly good for taking pictures in reasonable light on a casual basis. If you like taking pictures, get a dedicated camera, they're very reasonable now. 3g seems swift enough for me whenever I use it and even better on Wi-fi. Also, the user-interface is yet to be beaten to my thinking. Can you honestly say that using a Nokia N95 or N96 is as easy as an iphone? I've always found Nokias very sluggish between applications and different screens. And just not as well-designed to be honest. MMS could easily be added in an update and I'm not so sure why Apple haven't included it earlier. I heard that they thought it was a security risk in terms of it being hacked, but as that happened pretty early in the life of the iphone anyway I don't think they should drag their feet any longer. I don't find the removable battery 'problem' a pronlem either. It is in keeping with the seamless design of the device to not be able to open it. How many times have you dropped a phone only for the back door to come off, spilling the SIM card, battery etc. everywhere? It's just an elegant device to use I think. Try going back to a phone with buttons afterwards and it's a horrible come-down. Apple-haters will always exist adn will not allow themselves to like one of their products even if they liked it slightly. Sad really. I'm going to enjoy mine for many more years I reckon. Anyone reading these should be careful what they believe and do some research of thier own. Ok, you really do have to eat some "apple" pie! However, if you can get past that, then the iPhone is actually a very usable device. Personally, my main reasons for choosing the iPhone was that I could use it without a stylus and that I could actually see the screen outside - both of these things make most other phones/pdas useless to me when outdoors (try and use some devices on a beach in summer and you'll see what I mean). The added bonus of an "unlimited" data connection (on contract) was the icing on the cake as with the phone added to my home wireless internet connection; the free (well, part of the contract) openzone and other wireless hotspots; the "unlimited" 3G (albeit patchy), edge and GPRS data connections, and "push mail/calendar/contacts", and I have a very useful, always connected, device. Add the app-store to the mix, and you have quite a fun phone too, with many free games/utils/etc to download. Physically, the hard glass screen is superb in comparison with the soft plastic of resistive screens. NO real need for a screen protector here if you keep it away from keys etc. I know there are a plethora of things the iPhone can't do, but I only miss a few of the things my HTC Kaiser used to do (totally useless outside, btw). It was one of the first touchscreen-driven phones, and probably the most user-friendly. It had tons of memory, and was one of the best music players on the market. Other great features included the Safari web browser, Google maps, a brilliant LCD display to make the most of the multimedia features, and WiFi support too. But on the bad side, it was phenomenally overpriced and was locked to O2. It had a very poor quality camera compared to the competition. It lacked 3G (a major problem in a multimedia phone, and the only smartphone on the market to be missing 3G) and had limited Bluetooth connectivity, with no filesharing and no support for stereo Bluetooth headsets. Battery life was also poor, and there were various other limitations, such as the omission of MMS. The whole thing clearly demonstrated Apple's lack of experience as a cell phone manufacturer. So, one year on, has Apple learned its lessons and fixed the problems? Well, the first lesson that Apple has learned is that it needed to release the iPhone worldwide simultaneously. No waiting 6 months for the second generation to appear in the UK. 6 months is a heck of a long time in technology! So Apple learned this lesson and released the iPhone worldwide on 11 July 2008. Secondly, they learned that the first iPhone was too expensive, and so the second generation model is cheaper. Still expensive (£159 for the 16 GB version on a £30 per month contract), but not quite as expensive as before. Still, let's have a reality check here - the iPhone 3G is still the most expensive smartphone on the market. What about the phone itself? Well, clearly it's a 3G phone, so this fixes the single biggest complaint about the original iPhone. But remember that every single smartphone on the market has this feature, so this is nothing special. However, it does mean that finally the user can make the most of that huge screen and Safari web browser for a really outstanding mobile browsing experience. The 3G feature also supports the music downloading capability of the phone, and we can start to see the second generation iPhone fulfil its potential as a true multimedia device. We'd be mean not to say that it's a fantastic platform for all kinds of multimedia. The camera is one feature that hasn't really got any better. Apple make a big deal about how user friendly the camera is - it's certainly easy to take pictures (partly because it totally lacks any useful features such as a flash, macro, autofocus, etc that all of Apple's competitors include as standard), and the photo management system is nice too, but the camera quality still lags well behind phones such as the Nokia N95 or Sony Ericsson C902. Some other stuff that we take for granted is missing too, like MMS and video calling for instance. But the new iPhone does include some powerful new features. First up, there's GPS, combined with Google maps. With the iPhone's huge screen, this is a brilliant implementation of satellite navigation. You can use this for in-car or pedestrian navigation, and can use keyword searches to find places like nearby cafes, etc. Traffic information is also available. Another feature is the App Store, where you can browse, download and buy third-party applications for your iPhone. So, what to conclude? The iPhone 3G is still a strange kind of phone. Some things it does incredibly well. Others it does badly. Overall it's definitely a big improvement over the original iPhone. Is it worth the money? It really depends what you want from your phone, and what kind of compromises your willing to make Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Phedra on 27/01/2009 i had this phone, but i hated the camera and it was too big to fit in my pocket, i prefer the samsung tocco . Not a major issue for me. Of course these people should never buy the phone in the first place! Yes, of course the iPhone is not as quick as it is on the tv - did anyone really expect it to be lol - but it is still quick so don't let the neg's put you off on this point. The iPod is brilliant, have it hooked up in my car and works with all my old iPod accessories. The fact that the camera is rubbish is the reason you buy a digital camera, i mean come on, even SE's new 8MP camera is still no where near as good as an actual camera. I hate using bog standard phones now and i love my iPhone. Just the fact that everyone still goes 'oooh is that an iPhone?' is enough to buy one!!! It's just a matter of time before it can do everything that other phones can do. I have mms and it works fine. I have friends who have 'jailbroken' the phone (not 100% sure how that works so don't quote me) and they have amazing applications that cure alot of the problems mentioned. It seems this phone really is a classic "martmite" product, either you love it or hate it. In my experience it is a very very very good MP3 PLAYER with a kind of phone built in, its hard to explain but to me coming from nokia n72 and then n95 8gb it seems like the phone features have taken a back seat to the multimedia features you get. In some ways i regret moving from t-mobile to o2 and taking the 3G as i use my phone primarily for doing just what a mobile telephone should do IE allow me to make calls and contact my friends and family whilst away from home. I must say the UI is first class, ten times anything ive had in the past, it is extremely intuitive and crisp. Also very easy to use i imagine anyone could pick one up and use it with no significant problems. Media player is industry leading as we already knew although i do think the ability to send and recieve files with any other device via bluetooth is inexscusable and in my opinion a blatant tactic to maximise Apples profit through music downloads from itunes. Within that point i have never liked itunes layout and functions, but i expected this when choosing the phone so i can hardly mark it down on that issue. Another big problem is the battery life, I have had the phone for 3 months now and i am a commuter, i dont know if anyone else here commutes to and from work on public transport every day but it usually involves heavy ipod use to ease the pain. Now in this state the iphone disappoints, At least a full charge every day. This is probably better than my n95 but i am sure that was a dodgey unit as one of my friends had the same model with the same firmware which would only require a charge every 48 with moderate use. Pretty good for a phone with so many features. BIG negative for me personally is the quality of the camera. Coming from an n95 to this really is disappointing. There really is no excuse for the apallingly bad quality of the camer and lack of features to go with it. My old w810i SE had a better camera than the 3g and that phone feels like a relic now. Sorry apple but for the price of this phone the camera should REALLY be at least 5mp, which is the industry standard for TOP OF THE LINE smartphones like this one. I think on balance the iPhone 3g is a great device, i would hesitate to call it a phone considering it lacks features like mms and sms forwarding which i first had on my nokia 3330 about 8 years ago. Having said that i do enjoy using my iPhone, it is without a doubt a quality device which is stylish, lightweight for its size and very durable in my experience. In terms of intution it is miles ahead of the other smartphones out there, the touch screen is a revelation to me and is very quick and effective when composing new texts (dont email :) But the lack of a few basic feature i have come to expect from my mobile lets it down somewhat. The bluetooth issue makes me very angry as i was never told about this at the point of sale but i suppose i just assumed a phone of this price and prestige would have such, lets face it, basic features. The rest i cant fault and without a doubt the 3g is the best at what it does. If you want an extremely easy to use and intuitive phone to browse the web, watch movies, play (fully 3d!) games and of course listen to your mp3 collection and occaisionally call your friends i would say get this phone without a doubt. But if you need a solid, reliable smartphone to send/recieve email, live through those conferences and numerous hours on standby on your desk, forward texts, and video call then i suggest looking elsewhere. To sum up i would say the new iPhone is a great phone which you WILL either love or hate, but if you prefer your phone to make and recieve calls and texts, have full bluetooth functionality and last a few days on standby 1. you shouldnt be shopping for a smartphone and 2. The n95 8gb or even n96 would be a safer bet. I think this phone is designed for the slightly younger person who have a grip on technology, as we all do to be fair :) Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Ahmed on 23/12/2008 this phone is absolutely brilliant to use. it doesn't feel cheap it feels extraordinary in your hand and the touch is superb never seen anything as good as it. obviously i think for the price its a bit much as it doesnt have basic features that you would find it a cheaper phone like camera flash, mms, send files through bluetooth etc but if you have the money and you buy the phone all those draw backs just go away because the phone is amazing to use. Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Me on 22/12/2008 Cracking phone. I have a mac and the two interoperate brilliantly. The only time I find that battery life a bit short is if I have wireless, 3G & bluetooth enabled for extended periods of time. For the majority of my days, I keep it on 2G and enable the bluetooth only when in the car. If I do need wireless or 3G, I turn it on for the duration and then revert back. Easy. Nay dramas. Previous reviews are correct in that you cannot MMS but you can email the pictures to friends. the majority of multi-function phones have an email client so that isn't a problem; your friends can still receive your pics. You can also make your own ringtones so again there's no issues with that. If you are willing to wait for some geek to write an app for the iphone to allow video messaging then that isn't a drama either. Personally I find video messaging a tad naff. I mean what's the point. The best things are the browser, email, contacts and calendar apps that synchronise with my mobileme data. Also pictures I take are synchronised with my mac and are therefore loaded onto my online photo gallery. This is a very cool multi-function phone. For example, the bluetooth is worthless. It's just there to be used only and ONLY by apple's own bluetooth hands-free headsets. You can't use the phone's blutooth for ANY KIND OF FILE TRANSFER. There are also some bugs which sometimes prevent you from using your service's GPRS connection or even WiFi connections. Also, if you want to put songs, pics and everything else into the device from your computer, you'll need to use iTunes which is downloadable from apple's website. iTunes, in my opinion, is one of the most annoying and frustrating software to work with. Managing music, picture etc. libraries is a hell lot of work and there are so many frustrating elements to it that I'm just not going to dive that deep. The bad thing is, you can't delete or manage files in your iphone using the iphone itself so everytime you don't want a specific picture in your iphone you have to connect it to your computer and thhen delete the file in the library folder of your computer and then Sync your iphone with the updated library to get rid of the picture. It's Ridiculous!! The camera also takes very poor shots while still restricting video recording! you can't even record any voice and there's no FM radio! I just can't see why all this has managed to sneak past the developers the second time around. If apple had just came out of its shell and took a look around to see what other mobile devices are capable of, they would have probably done a better job with the 3G. Too bad Apple has always been a "Holier than thou" company. but once you accept what the iPhone is (and that's pretty much Apple forcing you to do what they want you to do with a multimedia mobile device and nothing more like a big Dictator) I think you'll enjoy it. But now that I'm stuck with the iphone because I paid so much for it (900$ in my country, unlocked) I think I would have been much happier with an HTC touch pro or HTC HD. at least the device looks extremely nice from far. The T-mobile G1 has a rubbish video quality for watching youtube videos, you cant even make out who the people are in the videos, it has a rubbish music player, very big and heavy for a phone and it has a keyboard that all the buttons dont feel like a normal button. The iphone 3g has a far better quality screen which is bigger than any other phone apart from the HD TOUCH HD, the videos are as clear as a tv, thw apps are very good for keeping you entertained, the built in ipod is better than any other ipod you would get and the gps is excellent. As a business device it's a serious contender, the texting and email facilities on it work pretty much off the back of the first sync, although there is the usual smtp problem (which happens on all mobile devices and is easy to get round), brilliant, highly recommended, get one. Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Rachel P on 20/11/2008 Thid is a truly appalling phone. It's hard to decide what to hate the most about it: as a UK-based user, though, I'd have to say that it was the un-turnoffable spellchecker, which, despite having UK and US English settings, still replaces words like 'recognised' with 'the US equivalent 'rcognized' in UK mode. This quickly gets annoying. The iPhone manual is revealing as to the mindset of the developers of this awful system - to paraphrase from memory: 'if you persistently override a word suggested by the spellchecker, the iPhone will eventually *permit* you to use that word without prompting'. Well, gee whizz, thanks for 'permitting' me to enter what I want like that, Apple. Incidentally, despite as a matter of course now dismissing any suggestions made by this system, it has never yet managed to stop suggesting certain words that I have told it again and again are not my preferred spelling. The default behaviour of the spellchecker is to assume you have made a mist ake, and to show a suggested replacement word in tiny, pale blue text, next to the word you have typed. If you click space, or make a full stop, your word gets replaced instantly. Because the text generally appears at the top of the screen, whilst you are focusing on typing at the bottom, it's very easy to miss when an inappropriate replacement of what you have typed has occurred. Invariably, this leads to you typing your whole e-mail, then reading back to discover it has completely Americanised your English, even after you have turned that dictionary off and overtly chosen the UK English one. This issue gets even worse when you are typing in a different language entirely. Another feature I found annoying was the camera. It's of particularly low quality, even for a 2MP camera. Worse, though, the 'shoot' button is a virtual touch-screen one. This is tricky enough when you are taking a photo of something in front of you. Try taking a photo of yourself, with the screen pointing away from you, though, and it just gets ridiculous - as there's no button to feel, it becomes nearly impossible to control. There is a real physical button on the device, and I feel this would have been a much better control to assign to that particular feature. With regard to the phone itself, several times now I have found myself unable to use to make simple calls in the middle of a busy city centre, with 5 bars showing and 3G internet otherwise working. To me, that's a fundamentally unacceptable shortcoming for any phone: if it cannot reliably perform its most basic function, than it's not much use to me. With regard to build quality, the small silver switch that controls the 'silent/vibrate' mode fell off of mine within 8 weeks of purchase. Upon checking the web, this would seem to be a widespread problem that goes back to the original iPhone and is still present in the 3G model. Apparently, they will fix this persistent fault if asked to (I haven't asked them to fix mine). I'd have preferred it, though, if they'd recognised this was a major issue from the first release, and avoided users having to send their phone away for avoidable repair with the 3G. Finally, the battery life figures I've seem quoted appear to be complete unrealistic. Mine, which I don't use heavily, lasts barely a day without recharge. All-in-all, I'm not taken with it. I find it frustrating to use, unreliable in operation, and of low build quality. I wouldn't purchase one again. It can email like your PC, it can view photos seemlessly, you can type very fast using the keyboard, the apps add so much functionality just like a PC does. If you want what almost everything your home computer can do, albeit in a new way, then the iPhone is for you. If you honestly can't live without MMS then maybe not. I used to Mms a few times a month but now I email photos instead, cheaper and easier using the mail app. Bloomberg app is free and great for news and markets, tube apps keep you informed, Around Me app finds bars/restaurants/cinemas/etc near me using gps. Overall, the iphone unfortunately seemed to be a complete waste of money, time and to be honest a complete let down to the hype it is currently receieving. Take my advice and save your time and money by investing in a much better phone that can actually do the things it claims to be able to! The iPhone never got past two bars while my work phone (on the same 3G network) always showed maximum signal strength. Frequently the IPhone had not enough signal to receive or place calls (1 bar) while the Nokia worked fine. The fact that bluetooth is severely crippled on the iPhone, only allowing mono headsets and worst of all, no BT data pass through from navigation systems that get traffic info via the phone or the special PDA that I use for work actually would make it necessary for me to carry a second phone. The SMS "Text message" application is very inadequate and limited compared to the capabilities of even low end phones. No templates, no delivery receipts. MMS (Multimedia messaging) is completely absent. Very disappointing. Also missing is voice dialing, voice call accept or reject, which is something I expect in this price range in the 21st century. So the reception issues, bluetooth woes and IMHO severly limited messaging, even dated core functionality make the iPhone 3G a huge disappointment for me, I reset and returned it after trying to use it for 4 hours. Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Rupert on 22/07/2008 The BATTERY LIFE is the HORRENDOUS even with the different useage habits of my wife. In its present configuration, under "real life" situations, the iPhone drains its battery faster than any phone I have ever seen. Case in point: Start out my day at 7 am. Fully charged iPhone. Check my email. 10 items download. Briefly review all. Total time: 18 min. Make a 45 min call. Make a 20 min call. Drive to work and after arriving, I respond to a text msg back and forth for three text sessions Text time used is approx 5 min. It is now 9:30 AM and I have 20% BATTERY POWER REMAINING! Unacceptable. If, instead of being at my office, I were on the road, at the airport, in the mall, etc., I would soon be out of power and then what??? My wife, on the other hand, uses her phone quite differently. Yes she makes calls, but she utilizes the internet and recreational apps a lot more then I do and she runs into the same problem. We both find ourselves walking around with car charger adapters and wall outlet power charger adapters in our pockets or briefcases. I almost can't believe that my phone has raised my daily stress level! Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Toby on 20/07/2008 The battery life is actually MUCH worse than the original - which ABOVE all else despite what its like to use or what it does, makes it impractical for those that want a truely Mobile device like even a half decent modern Mobile Phone is today. Another VERY worrying FAULT is the phones HEAT production - sometimes it becomes so HOT that it is uncomfortable next to the body and when held. :( Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Rob on 09/07/2008 Okay, the new 3G Iphone, this will be realsed on the 11th july and there isnt a big waiting list for it, hmm, maybe because people have actually listened to me for a change, or maybe people know that it's a rip off. Indeed it is, there is no change to the actual phone itself, it just has a faster tinternet, and to be honest, apple did not need to launch a brand new phone for 3G. Which they didnt, they simply reselling the old one, but the 3G, you still cant video call and that fault is still there, bascly, apple are wasting there time, and they should go back to just making laptops, and even they are not much good. It's a poor phone, and very limited!
