Reviewed by Rob on 16/10/2009 We first came across the Henry back in 1992, our rented property had one. We then bought one of our own in 2004 and then another (a Hetty for upstairs) in 2009. Overall a truly remarkable machine in its earlier form and even better now with it's gimmicky-sounding but excellent "auto-save" feature which seems to incorporate a soft start and much reduced noise levels. Surprisingly, the suction on the low power setting (600W) of the new model seems more than adequate for almost all carpet cleaning so something seems to have been done to improve the efficiency of the motor/suction system. The high power setting (1200W) can lift your carpet and is better used with the dust brush or the other included accessories. The Henry seems to be able to produce amazingly powerful suction from it's rated 600W/1.2kW Wattage, fuelling my scepticism of the need for 1.6kW, 2kW and more as is often "boasted" by other manufacturers. The whole ensemble works beautifully, very tough and durable, and easy to live with. Bags are huge and cost only 50p each when bought in bulk, spares are also easily available. Buy one of these cleaners and you may well have it for twenty years and more. Highly recommended. Disadvantages? It could use more edge cushioning so as to make it easier to drag around walls/objects without excessive impact. Henrys are a bit wide to sit on stairs, but the hose is extendable so it will reach all stairs from bottom or top. And one thing I'd really like that the Henry's never seem to have (do any cleaners these days?) is a blow setting. Oh, and one more thing - I had to peel off the eyes of our first Henry as it was frightening our three year old son! He was fine with it once this was done. For the earlier models, it's true what AMW says about unwinding all the cable completely before use. If you don't the cable can get quite warm during extended operation as it's wound in close proximity to the motor. In the later "auto-save" model the cleaner tends to be used more on the lower power setting so there's not as much heat generated and it's not really an issue. But these are minor niggles. If you're considering buying one new or used, go for it with confidence. You're unlikely to regret it. Rating:
Reviewed by AMW on 30/08/2007 I have bought several Henrys for the school where I worked. the vacuums were used daily on hard and carpeted floors and stood up well against heavy use. They were easy to assemble and hard to destroy. One thing: unwind the cord completely before use! Rating:
