I have had this kettle for a long time and love it - to those who say the lid welds itself shut try putting using descaler, living in south east with loads of limescale I have dealt with this issue. I bought the kettle about 10 yrs ago and it was over my budget but the fact it has never let me down and looks so good makes it worth it. I came across this article because I want to be sure I can find it on the market to buy a replacement for when my kettle goes to electric heaven!!!

I have had my kettle for almost 5 yrs and bought it purely for the looks and also the reputable brand name. I must say i have been very happy with it and have not had any of the problems mentioned however the filter mesh has torn and sadly i dont seem to be able to find a replacement.

I bought my cube kettle because of the unique design and it fitted nicely into my deco kitchen. However after just 32 months useage it sprang a leak at the water level. I tryed to re glue it with the very expensive glue around but within the day it began to leak again. The guy who designed the kettle may have gone to university to study design in furniture and stuff but when it comes to actually the safety aspects of electrical goods i think he should have done a new course in Electrics and what happens if things go wrong, who takes the blame? Oh well another expensive kettle thrown on the tip.

i bought this kettle because of its unusual design, shape and looks and i loved it right from the first time i saw it.i have had the kettle for 5 years now and surprise surprise the water level indicator has sprung a leak.i contacted philips and was told that they cant repair it and to just throw the kettle away and get a new one.i was also told by a local philips repair centre that the leak was common to all the cube kettles and was a design fault and thats why the kettles manufacture was discontinued.its such a shame that such a lovely looking thing that wasnt that cheap either has let me and others down.

As the other people say lid sticks and now we have a pool of water around the kettle.

Glad to hear your reviews - I have had the same problems with the lid and the water level indicater has just fallen out flooding the worktop and kettle base - definitiely a design fault - has anyone had any luck contacting Philips about this?

Just to confirm the previous review - the lid does indeed weld itself shut, and the knob works loose ( though can be re-tightened). My kettle has also just started to leak water over the base, which is rather worrying to say the least. Still looks great though!

I bought this kettle for its fantastic retro looks. At first it was fine. Then the lid seemed to 'weld' itself to the kettle and was impossible to remove. The lid's knob then worked loose with the effort. (You can fill it through the pourer though). Then the other day I was just about to flick it on and noticed it was sitting in a huge pool of water. The water level indicator bit had virtually fallen out of the kettle and a kettle-full of water flooded the area - including the base and wire. I hate to think what would have happened if I'd switched it on. Major design and safety fault, I'd say.
