Reviewed by Kate Colquhoun on 20/01/2012I've had this appliance since Dec 2010. It is RUBBISH and so it Hotpoint. I've now suffered through two Christmas's of breakdowns, lost two freezer fulls of food and wasted so much time on hopeless helplines and listened to so many 'engineers' give this or that explanation for why this piece of garbage fails to work ... I am aware of the electrical faults on it, but apparently mine isn't one of the models affected. However, periodically, especially in cold weather (both Christmas's) the freezer fails. This, I am now told is due to the compressor shutting down if the ambient room temperature the applicance is kept in falls below 10C. I lived in a rural location until July this year My kitchen was at the far end of the house and frequently the temperature in it would fall at night to only 1-2C once the heathing had gone off. I also often travel abroad and switch off the heating in my house. I CANNOT guarentee to constantly heat my kitchen to a temperature of 10C so the F/F will continue to work. This is ridiculous. I moved house in summer last year and now live in a suburban, well insulated home with an internal garage. The quaddro lives in the garage now. The temperature in it falls to around 2-3C at night. The quaddro apparently will not work at below 10C. This is CRAZY. My previous F/Fs was a Bosch. It worked for 12 years in my kitchen, my garage and my very cold outbuildings. I also had a Zanussi F/F for extra storage. That too worked in the outbuildings for over 10 years. I've told Tesco Direct who sold me this rubbish that I want my money back so that I can buy a proper F/F. They can do whatever they want with this piece of rubbish which is really only fit to act as a (albeit very nice looking) storage cupboard. Urhhhh £600+ worth of unreliable service for less than a year and hours of tortuous 'interactions' with various customer service (no service whatseoever) desks and hopeless Indesit engineers - it makes my blood boil. Why can't they just be honest and stop taking people's money for goods that clearly are 'not fit for purpose'. We bought this unit in the summer of 2009 from Argos and have had problems from day 1.We paid £700 with the warranty. It arrived with fine scratches to the top drawer and the right hand door. I rang Hotpoint and they said they would replace both doors. The engineer arrived a week later to replace these door but didn`t have a clue how to fit them saying he had never fit one before. The doors arrived bare so everything had to be swapped over. He finally figured out how to fit them and left with the "door open" alarm sounding. We were told it was due to the fridge warming up and would stop shortly. The alarm remained on continuously and the fridge was not cooling so i rang Hotpoint and i was told they would replace the fridge freezer. The alarm sounded day and night. The new unit was delivered a few days later and just like the previous one, fine scratches on the top freezer door. This was replaced without any problems after a further engineers visit. No further problems until may 2011 when we noticed some marks around the top freezer drawer handle. We monitored these and they appeared to be getting worse. These marks looked similar to what you would get on a cars alloy wheel, caused by a reaction of metals, these were under the lacquer.I searched the internet to see if anyone else had had this problem. No mention of this but plenty of info on the door wire fault.I checked my unit and found that my wire was also chaffed. I rang hotpoint and was told the top door would be replaced free but i would have to pay for the freezer door as it was out of warranty.I told them i wasn`t happy as i beleived it was due to the materials used. After a long argument i was told someone would ring me back. A lady called Margaret called about an hour later and said the engineer would look at it when he comes to repair the faulty/dangerous door wire. The engineer confirmed the blemish was due to faulty material and would be replaced without charge. This was then replaced soon after. Yesterday, whilst cleaning the unit,my wife noticed a similar stain on the top right door.I rang Hotpoint told them about this and they said it would be dealt with without any charge. No objections whatsoever!i asked if this was a known concern and was told it wasn`t.An engineer is due to visit this week.It appears to me Hotpoint are aware of this. We haven`t had any breakdowns on this unit but the finish is very poor.£700 is a lot of money for a fridge freezer and the quality just isn`t there. Rating: ![]() Reviewed by sarah on 31/10/2011 hey the bottom line is dont buy this unit. it looks lovely but hides a nightmare of breakdowns. The original issue was related to the wiring in the door which blew the circuit board. The engeneers replaced both but to no avial as the unit still didnt work. They replaced everything ie., seals, circuit board again, baffles, control panel etc. It took 3mths and ok it kind of works except that the internal yellow temp lights keep flashing. I lost the will to live and could not bear the thought of going through another 3mths until this morning. It took 15mins of waiting on the phone que for customer service to answer. the upshot is they are sending an engineer - for free - to have a look. by the way this unit was bought in March 2009. sorry for the rant. Hotpoint would not even speak to me about it, as we live in the Channel Islands. They told me to call their repair agent here, which we did and they are still trying to fix it. We have had a new door and 2 x circuit boards, which has still not fixed the problem. We are very frustrated and disappointed that Hotpoint will not deal with us and having no recourse as we live outside of the UK. We are still waiting for another circuit board to be sent from the UK. So what happens if that doesn't work? It will be interesting to see what Hotpoint are prepared to do, if the engineer is unble to fix it!! Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Rachel on 17/06/2011 Thank you so much Michael - I have just organised a replacement for my broken F/F following your advice - couldn't believe it when I saw the bare wires in the door... shocking. To be fair, though, customer service was good and, once I indicated I wasn't interested in replacement parts and wanted the thing gone from my house as it's a hazard, there was no argument at all. Just have to have the same model, but I love the F/F so am happy with that, as long as the fault is fixed in the new model, which she indicated it was. Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Michael on 01/06/2011 Common Door Fault! We bought this appliance in July 2009 because my wife was really taken by its appearance and design. I usually spec Bosch / Siemens appliances because they are well-built and durable, and I usually avoid the bells and whistles top-of-the-range models because it usually means that there is more to go expensively wrong. However, my wife would not be dissuaded on this occasion and the fridge-freezer did meet our requirements nicely. After a bit of research on UK Whitegoods and other websites, it became apparent that there were no adverse comments listed, so we took the plunge. We didn't take out an extended warranty because I don't believe that they provide value for money, but we did register for the free five year parts guarantee. I have to say that in the nearly two years we have owned it, it has performed superbly. That was until last Thursday evening, the 26th of May 2011... The usual scenario, I shut the doors and the appliance went BANG! Green flashing power light - upon consulting the manual, It became apparent that "The appliance is not operating correctly. Contact the Technical Assistance Centre." Yeah, cheers for that, Hotpoint! The interior light had stopped working, the compressor was silent and the fans didn't spin up, although I did hear refrigerant circulating. I have to thank all of you on this site who have communicated your experiences with this model, because after reading the comments and tales of woe on here, my course of action the following morning was clear. I called the helpline number shortly after opening time at 8.00 am on Friday the 27th May. This is the first point of contact and you will probably get through to some uncaring drone who just wants to log your call and details. Don't bother ranting and raving - it won't do you any good. Just stay polite and calm, and give the address and other details when you are asked for them. When you are asked towards the end of the conversation what the problem is, simply say that the appliance has failed because of the COMMON DOOR FAULT. They'll probably pretend that they don't know what you're talking about, so explain in more detail about the KNOWN DESIGN FAULT with the cable insulation failing in the left hand door and shorting out, and throw in that the problem is all over the Internet for good measure. This drone will then tell you that "someone" from the correct department will call you on the number you gave shortly. That's fine, that's the way they work. Politely say goodbye an d hang up. Probably within a couple of hours, you'll get a call back from customer services. She'll confirm your details and tell you that the fault can be repaired by one of their engineers at no cost. The lady I spoke with actually gave me the earliest date for an engineer visit as Friday 3rd of June. I let her finish and then politely told her that I knew that this was a common design fault, that I knew that the cable in later versions had been re-designed to prevent recurrence, that I didn't want a repair, the unit was HAZARDOUS, and that I wanted a new appliance with the design flaw rectified. I couldn't believe it when she replied "so you want a new one, then?" Yes I do, said I. She told me that another department would contact me shortly to arrange the swap-out. I pressed for compensation for loss of food and we agreed a price of £50. A couple of hours later around 1.30pm, I got a call from another lady to arrange the swap-out for today, Wednesday 1st June. They sent me a text yesterday with a 3 hour delivery slot and then called me to confirm the details. A brand new appliance was delivered and unpacked at 8.30am this morning, and the faulty unit was taken away. Oh, and the postie's just been with a £50 Sainsburys voucher from Indesit. :D The new fridge is up and running as I type, and I've shaved two days off the earliest engineer visit they could give me. You only have to read some of the horror stories on here to realise that a repair will probably take a lot more than one visit, so the moral of the story is stick to your guns. In warranty or out, you are entitled to a new appliance and Hotpoint know this I'll be checking the cable periodically for signs of wear, but aside from that, the fridge has worked well up to last Thursday and I'm happy with the level of service and communication I've had from the manufacturer over this fault. If it hadn't have been for the design flaw, it would be 5 stars from me. It provides power to the vertical hinged bar on the outer edge of the door which provides a sealing surface between the two doors when they are closed. The power is to warm the bar so that condensation doesn't form on it. You can feel that it is warm when the fridge is running. However, Hotpoint have used standard flex wire and over time, with the opening and closing of the door, this wire fails. At best it simply sits there with exposed wire and the bar goes cold. At worst, the bare wires touch the chassis of the fridge and the whole thing goes bang. I had my Quadrio repaired after it was 14 months old. The engineer said that the wire had been modified. Yes it had - with thicker, less flexible, wire. I'm no engineer, but surely a less flexible wire will tolerate less the constant flexing? This has now been resolved with a much larger conduit for the cable to run through. The cable supplies power to an anti condesation heater in the folding strip that separates the doors. The reason a new door is required is because the cable is hardwired to the heater, which is built into the door, and ends with a plug to the top board. I ring again to be told an engineer would call next day. Engineer came 3rd June to tell me wire had broken on left hand door and he would be back on the 8th June ! This will make it 1 week with no fridge or freezer and we are having our heat wave. Thank goodness for this site as it has given me more knowledge about this problem. If this is a common fault surely the product should be recalled. This product is faulty and apparently Hotpoint know about this problem but are trying to keep it all hush hush and its us the consumers who are suffering. This product is simply not fit for purpose it doesn't keep the food chilled in the fridge at all. The longest time my fridge has worked for since 26 april 2010 is 10 days! Hotpoint on contact immediately refunded the £160. My local trading standards were very interested in this and are taking this matter up directly with Hotpoint om my behalf. As per the last person all Hotpoint did was sell my husband a warranty to cover a call out as the product is 16 months old. I was really pleased with my product until today and spent most of the day giving away all my food to family and friends. I will update all on how I fair with Hotpoint as so far I haven't even got an engineers visit. Rating: ![]() Reviewed by James G on 23/04/2010 Wow so many similar experiences of this appalling accident of a product. Hotpoint should be utterly ashamed of themselves. My fridge failed with a flash and a bang as the wire in the left hand door severed on 5th March. when i reported it to hotpoint, they sold me a £160 warranty. The next day they phoned me back and suggested I cancel it as they were aware of the fault and would fix it free of charge. So the debacle began.... Fitter showed up a week later, looked at it and deceided it needed a new door, ordered one and left. a week later another fitter brought a new door, fitted it and realised that a control circuit board needed replacing so ordered one and left. Another week later and another fitter calls, fits the board but cannot program it so leaves, 2 more weeks later and another fitter calls. he re-programmed the board told us that it was fixed and left. That was Thursday 22nd April, today Friday 23rd April the fridge is still not cold so i guess it still isn't fixed and now we'll have to wait another 2 weeks for another fitter to come and look and start the cycle again.....Junk!!! Do Not Buy Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Lisa Harrison - Updated on 19/04/2010 At last my fridge/freezer has been repaired. The engineer came out Thursday morning and after about 1 1/2 hours and taking various parts of the fridge apart to try to find out why the alarm sound wouldn't stop, he finally realised what it was. The new doors don't come with magnets which are housed in the top. He asked if I still had the old one(which I did luckily enough) so he managed to get the magnet out of the old one and in the new one. HURRAY - it works, but the door has to be pushed to really hard, otherwise the alarm starts to sound. We've been in contact with Hotpoint again today about the door being a different colour, and they have booked a replacement to be fitted on 28th of this month. Let's hope that it can now be rectified once and for all, only I don't have alot of faith in the wire fitting in the new door, as it doesn't seem any different to the original which severed. New door and circuit board ordered, these took weeks and weeks to arrive and when i phoned up to ask they had no record of these parts being ordered for me and kept putting me through to other people until I reached the warehouse. It was like no one cared. Fridge was still just within warranty at this point... now out of warranty and making strange squeaks and clicks. If it breaks again Im going to leave it on a roundabout with a big banner saying " dont buy Hotpoint, they tried to electrocute me!" It went with a really loud bang - like a shot gun going off, then a strong smell of burning, and in turn tripped the whole house !! I waited 2 WEEKS for an engineer to come out, and he told me that the wire had severed in the left hand door !! This had then caused the power board to blow. He ordered the parts and said Hotpoint would contact me once everything had been delivered. He returned this afternoon to repair it. A new door and a new power board. And guess what??? THE DOOR IS A DIFFERENT COLOUR !!! We told him it wasn't his fault, and that we would get back in touch with Hotpoint to see what they are willing to do about it. We now have a continual beeping sound. The engineer said that once the freezer is up to temperature, then it will stop, but it has been going on now for nearly 3 hours and is driving me crazy. We tried to telephone Hotpoint about the different coloured door, and were on hold for approx 10 mins, and then at 5pm sharp, they cut us off !!!!!! We rang back and surprise, surpeise, they were CLOSED. I will be ringing them first thing in the morning, and will post any updates.
