I purchased the DF4 from a local retailer, I did not use it for the first week, I followed all the instructions and prepared to deep fry some frozen chips until my husband said 'I can smell plastic burning'the so called 'cool walls' of the fryer were immensly hot, we used an external digital thermometer which gave a reading of over 90 celsuis at which point we thought better to switch off and not use it. We returned it and it was replaced, the second one was just the same and has now been returned to the retailer and a refund given. I am now looking for a fryer which will do the job. It is a nice looking fryer and no doubt easy to use, but the sides got just too hot.

Very useful to be able to remove the pan for emptying and cleaning, good heat control but poor design overall. It makes me wonder whether the designers ever use their own products. With the lid closed, the filter does a good job of removing much of the smell but when the lid is upright, the residue dribbles out of the lid and down the hinge assembly and collects in pools on the worktop. The spring-loaded contacts that the element sits in is not up to the job of once-a-month removal. The first one burnt out and melted the plastic contact housing before the 12 month guarantee was up. The replacement did exactly the same just 4 months after the initial warranty period ended. Two fryers in 16 months is not what I'd call durable. Will think twice before buying another Breville product.
