Reviewed by Sue on 08/09/2007 I bought an Elan 32 yesterday, and tried it out today. The assembly of the grass box took us a good 10mins ("just snap together" said instructions, but it was such cheap, tacky, bendy plastic, that it was very difficult & we were afraid we would break it!) When I started to use it, I was very pleased with the cut it was giving - (better and closer than the rotary one I had been using before) until on the 3rd 'stripe' of my lawn, the front wheel axle (plastic) suddenly snapped in two! The shop where I had bought it -(Homebase) gave me a refund with no problem, but I won't be buying another one of those! Cheaply made and very disappointing. Rating:
Reviewed by Janet on 07-08-2005 Very disappointed with this lawnmower. Only for buyers with flat perfect lawns. It cannot cope on any undulations or grass that is just slightly damp, the lever for grass heights is difficult to use, the grass box falls off constantly (I have now broken one of the fitting lugs) and I have only owned this mower for three months. It has now been discarded. Rating:
Reviewed by Back to Flymo on 23-06-2005 Bought last August....took back for refund last week. Quite simply the worst electrical product I've bought in over 20 years. Shockingly poor construction and design. Grass falls out bottom of collection bin. I was sold on the blurb about this cylinder being so much better for my lawn. No matter how much I messed about with the cylinder blade settings it just would not cut properly. It even tugged a few patches of grass out of the lawn, so it looks far worse than before. And you can forget cutting the grass if it is even slightly damp as the passage between the blades and collection bin is far too narrow and clogs up even a few metres. Got a Flymo roller 400 instead and now the grass is done in 1/4 of the time. Rating:
Reviewed by Greenfingers on 27-05-2005 Bought it in April. In May the plastic handle snapped off. Absolute piece of junk. Rating:
Reviewed by Darren on 05-05-2005 I thought that this was going to be an excellent mower, but no. The build quality is poor. Ergonomically it's a disaster (you can't pick it up unless you're a gorilla). As for the cut - well I can't get it to make any stripes on my lawn. It may be my technique, but I suspect it's because the roller is so lightweight that it just can't flatten the grass. Rating:
Reviewed by Steve on 03-04-2005 I bought this cylinder mower to replace a burnt-out hover that had lasted 12 years. If you're used to hovers then you'll find that cylinder mowers are a little different. The first cut of the season took a while, because you have to cut it 2-3 times, lowering the cut each time. You can't just turbo blast through at the shortest setting or you'll wreck your lawn. However, once you've got over the first cut you'll find that subsequent cuts are faster than using a hover. That's because the cutting action is so smooth instead of chopping like a hover does. The end result is far superior to a hover. It really makes you want to get the strawberries and cream out! I wouldn't recommend a cylinder mower for short lawns, as turning around is the hardest bit to master. It's best for longer lawns, preferably without any curved borders or things like trees in the middle (I have 2 trees in my lawn and that's about the limit for this mower). The Elan 32 is pretty good as it's small and light enough to lift up when turning. Not really great for someone with a bad back though. I found the Elan 32 not that easy to assemble, due to the quality of the plastic mouldings - I had expected better from Qualcast to be honest. However, once that had been done, the mower has been pretty easy to use. It's reasonably light, easy to store in the garage (no bigger than a flymo) and not that hard to clean. Adjusting the height of the cut is easy, as you just move a lever up and down, but the lever can be a bit stiff and I found it easier to do if you turn the mower upside down. Overall I'm pleased and I don't think I'd go back to a hover unless I had a smaller garden. Rating:
