Reviewed by N. Dickenson on 28-08-2004 I cant say that I have been all that impressed by these mowers, I bought a 17se about 2 years ago, but have found it's performance less than satisfying. Really I think these machines will only work if your lawn is mown at least twice a week, and the ground is perfectly flat. As soon as there is any growth in the lawn, the mower will just push it flat and not cut properly. As far as putting the plastic wheels on for tall grass, this does not really seem to help either.
The mower has not really gone wrong much in the time I have used it, the starter motor and several bolts were loose on delivery, I can understand this, but for the price one pays, this should not be the case. The ignition
key switch has needed to be replaced, this cost B#30.00, which is absolutely extortionate for the type of cheap item it is.
The engine however seems good and runs well, and the starter perfomrs ok, but often the battery is flat if left for a little while. In terms of the cut I expected an awful lot more, it really just seems to leave anything longer than 1-2 inches. The rear roller was ok though, and did leave a good lasting stripe.
I think the Balmoral mower is only useful if you spend a lot of time in the garden and can really look after your lawn, if you have slightly poor turf then forget it, I find the Honda range with the steel rear roller much more suitable, and they seem to be able to cut the grass whatever the height.
