Nintendo Game Boy Color
Product Rating
The Game Boy is that small, colourful hand-held video game system clutched by folks playing it everywhere. Popular among a wide age group, including a good number of airport-lounging power executives, the Game Boy has a true hard-core fan base comprised of millions (and millions) of kids around the globe. This audience has literally turned the Game Boy--and now the enhanced and more powerful Game Boy Color--into a fashion accessory.
Nintendo's Game Boy debuted in the late 1980s and has since sold over 60 million units worldwide, far outpacing other hand-held game systems. With a catalogue of over 1,000 games and dozens of add-on peripherals, Game Boy is a monster of a hand-held game system, and a remarkably affordable one at that.
Early March 1998 brought the release of the Game Boy Color system, an upgraded version of the original. It is equipped with an 8-bit CPU, doubling the original Game Boy's computing power. The small LCD screen can display up to 56 colours simultaneously (out of a 32,000-color palette), delivered via boosted video processing memory that provides remarkably sharp and vibrant graphics. One important note: the system is not playable in the dark, but there are plenty of effective book light-style add-ons available.
A cool new feature in the Game Boy Color is a built-in infrared communications port that allows gamers to exchange data between systems cable-free. Two players can simply walk up to each other, enter a few commands, and trade in-game items, custom characters, or saved games (for supporting games). Nintendo has yet to take full advantage of this feature, so don't expect to use it too often, if at all. Head-to-head action (the ability for two players to play in the same game) still requires the optional Game Link cable, but the Game Boy Color transfers the data between machines 64 times faster than older Game Boy systems.
The hundreds of available games vary from tremendously compelling to instantly forgettable. Quality or not, the entire library of games designed for the original system is playable on Game Boy Color, but buyers should note that not all Game Boy Color games will work on the original Game Boy system.
The Game Boy Color system is available in an exotic array of colours and special editions. Accessories and add-on peripherals abound, enhancing the playing experience with vibrating feedback to in-game bumps and crashes, extra battery power, and even a clever camera package that allows players to capture, tweak, and print images.
Features of the Nintendo Game Boy Color include:
- 52 brilliant colours simultaneously displayed on Game Boy Color's small portable screen.
- Full colour portable gaming is an awesome advance.
- Is twice as fast as the regular Game Boy producing more sophisticated games - faster action, more advanced AI, and increased realism.
- You don't have to go out and buy all new games to enjoy playing in colour!
- You can play any of the 450 original Game Boy titles, and Game Boy Color will transform them to colour from black and white!
- New games designed specifically for Game Boy Color are sharper and even more vivid with a full spectrum palette of more than 32,000 colours.
