TomTom ONE ReviewRating: Date: 29/01/2007 The TomTom One is TomTom's entry-level sat-nav system. Competitors include the nuvi 300 and StreetPilot C510 from Garmin, the Navman F20 and the Sony NV-U50T. The TomTom is probably the most expensive of these entry-level systems, but it is easily the best.
The TomTom One is an easy to use system with a touchscreen display. The display shows a 3D map of your location in combination with voice directions. You can choose from 55 different voices in 36 different languages. The display is a good quality TFT display that can be seen easily in day or night-time conditions, although at just 3.5 inches across it's quite small. You won't find a larger display in this price range however, so you'll need to spend more if you want a bigger screen!
The menus are easy to navigate. There are options to select the best route depending on whether you want the quickest, shortest, or avoiding tolls and congestion charges. You can even plan complex trips with stop-offs and breaks. The TomTom will estimate arrival times for you (or, if you like to work backwards, you can specify an arrival time and the TomTom will tell you when you have to leave!) Additional information such as sign posts is displayed when available. One bonus feature that we like is the digital compass – hardly any other sat-nav systems offer this useful feature.
The whole device is very compact and is very easy to install, detach and transport. You can literally take the device with you in your pocket after you park the car. A windscreen holder and in-car charger are included. Battery life is about two hours, so you'll need to hook up the charger if you're planning a journey longer than this.
The basic TomTom One comes with mapping for the UK (Great Britain & Northern Ireland) only. The TomTom One Europe comes with complete mapping for the whole of Western Europe, stored in a convenient plug-in memory card. For the record, the complete coverage is as follows: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Vatican City.
Moving away from the core navigation functions, the TomTom One has still more to offer. Using the device's Bluetooth connection, you can connect to your mobile phone (if compatible) and use your phone to download traffic congestion reports, weather forecasts, additional voices, detailed city maps and other extras. However, please note that this is a subscription based service.
Optional accessories include a choice of carrying cases, and a USB charger kit.
In summary if you're looking for a basic reliable in-car sat-nav system that gets you from A to B without fuss, the TomTom One is the one to choose. Spend more cash and you'll get a larger screen and more toys to play with, but for those on a budget the ONE does the job.

Reviewed by Red on 03/04/2008 Very let down by the main review as I bought the Ver 3 unit and found that it now DOES NOT HAVE ITINERY PLANNING...!! :( [Editor's reply: Sorry, Red, the version we reviewed last year did have itinerary planning!] Rating:
Reviewed by Roger on 09/07/2007 I borrowed a TomTom ONE, and did a few trips, but wanted TMC. The TomTom TMC options are subscription based (or are after the first year) which I didn't like... Found the Navman F20 + TMC for less than the base TomTom ONE (and the Navman's TMC is free forever). The TMC really makes a difference, wouldn't bother with a SatNav without it... Rating:
Reviewed by Darren on 14/06/2007 EXCELLENT. Go for the new slim version. If you are looking to buy one, Ebuyer come up the cheapest. I trawled the internet and they came out cheapest anywhere (Included Google Checkout £10 Discount) Rating:
Reviewed by Paul on 01-06-2006 Had the Tom-tom one for a week now and have to say its been worth every penny, super quick satellite pick up and a fast processor for pinpoint accuracy of your location on the map. Menu setup is simple and has some great features also the cradle that fixes to the windscreen has a great build quality and won't break in a hurry unlike some flimsy holders.
This is my second sat nav the first being a Navman pin pda in which the build quality was pants and for which I paid £400 for less then 18mths ago, I paid £239 for my Tom-tom one and have just seen it for £219.
So if you want a simple to understand sat nav at a great price this is the one for you. Go buy it you won't regret it Rating:
Reviewed by Chris Wyatt on 29-05-2006 Superb ..never used one before and was amazed at the speed of the new StarIII chipset and the speed it picks up satellites and holds on to them.....will even pick up signals in the house....
Post-code address and destination setting may lead you astray in country areas but fualtless in towns and cities.
For the money and the need for a simple system with SD card for maps ....it cannot be beaten...a good buy for as little at £239.00 now. Rating:
