TomTom GO 910 ReviewRating: Date: 30/01/2007 The TomTom Go 910 is TomTom's top-of-the-range in-car satellite navigation system, and in our opinion is the best portable GPS system that you can buy. It was the winner of the 2006 "Best Sat Nav" award at What Mobile Awards. The RRP is £399.99, but you can certainly buy one for less than that.
The Go 910 looks like a larger version of the very popular TomTom ONE. It's a compact, sleek device that fits to your windscreen and can be easily removed for security when not in use. The design is minimalist, with all of the controls being available via touchscreen. The screen is larger than most portable GPS devices, at 4 inches across, although the Garmin nuvi 660 is slightly larger. It's a high resolution, bright TFT display with a light sensor that automatically dims at night for optimum viewing.
Navigation is by 2D or 3D mapping, with voice directions too. The voice directions are able to read out street names and places as well as giving directions. As you'd expect there's a wide choice of different languages and voices available. The volume automatically adjusts according to the car speed. The Go 910 is pre-installed with mapping for Europe, USA and Canada. The full coverage list is as follows: Great Britain, Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Portugal and all of the USA and Canada (incl. Hawaii, Alaska and Puerto). Coverage of some countries is limited, but for most countries TomTom claim 99% coverage. In addition to streets and towns, the TomTom also knows about points of interest such as cafes, car parks and the like, helping you to have a safe and comfortable journey. The device is quick to get a GPS fix, and is quick to calculate a route too.
As you'd expect from a top-end machine, the TomTom includes warnings of speed cameras, both fixed and mobile. A speeding alert will let you know if you're exceeding the current speed limit. It also supports real-time traffic reports, although this is a subscription-based service. A free one-month trial is included. Real time weather reports and a 5-day forecast are also available.
The Go 910 isn't short of toys to play with during a long journey. It doubles as an MP3 player with 12 Gbytes of free disk for storing music (enough for thousands of songs). Alternatively you can plug in your iPod and control it from the TomTom's touchscreen. It also functions as a handsfree kit for your Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone. Most Bluetooth phones are compatible. Visit the TomTom website for a full and up-to-date list of compatible phones. A digital compass is a useful feature, and so are the barometer and altimeter. There are other features that you might think of as gimmicks: a digital photo viewer, instant messaging to "buddies", etc.
The battery on the Go 910 is meatier than on the entry-level TomTom systems, and provides enough juice for up to 4 hours of use. For longer journeys you'll need to make use of the in-car charger.
Really we can't find fault with the TomTom Go 910. Yes, it costs more than an entry-level system, but we think it offers exceptional value for money. As well as doing the core navigation functions brilliantly, it also includes all the extras that you could want. Put simply, it does everything you'd want a sat nav system to do, and it does it well.
Features of the TomTom GO 910 include:
- Easy to use: Extra wide 4 inch LCD touchscreen gives you smart design and easy to use navigation literally at your fingertips.
- Maps of the whole of Europe, the USA and Canada on hard disk: Door-to-door navigation across Europe, the USA and Canada.
- Clear spoken instructions, including street and place names: TomTom GO 910 speaks some 36 languages in over 50 different voices and can even announce street and place names.
- Hands-free calling: Doubles as a hands-free car kit using Bluetooth® technology. So you can make & receive calls as you drive with just a touch of the screen.
- Smart extras: Built-in Mp3 player; 20 Gb (12 Gb free) of hard disk, enough for 1000's of songs and pictures; remote control; and much more.
