TomTom GO 510 ReviewRating: Date: 15/01/2007 TomTom are one of the most popular manufacturers of in-car sat-nav systems, and it's not hard to see why. They simply deliver a huge number of features for your money, and the popular TomTom GO 510 is a good example of this. The GO 510 isn't an entry-level system, but it's very well priced and gives you very nearly everything you could want from a GPS system.
The device is very easy to use, with a large touchscreen display showing a 3D map of your current surroundings, combined with voice directions. The display is one of the largest available, at 4 inches across, with high resolution and good visibility. You can choose from a selection of voices, with support for 36 languages. The mapping system includes various points of interest, such as petrol stations, car parks and cafes. The route planner is comprehensive, enabling you to select the fastest route, or the shortest, or avoiding toll roads, congestion charges, etc.
The GO 510 comes with mapping for Europe and South Africa as standard. These are supplied on SD memory cards. TomTom claim 99% coverage of the UK and most European countries. The Go 710 has the advantage of covering the whole of Western Europe on a single memory card, instead of having to swap cards when you travel abroad.
In addition to the GPS navigation functionality, the TomTom GO 510 has a good range of additional supporting features. Perhaps first amongst these is a database of speed cameras, both fixed and mobile. The system gives a warning when a known speed camera is coming up. You can access real-time traffic reports (subscription-based service; one month free trial included), and also a 5-day weather forecast for your destination.
The GO 510 even comes with a Bluetooth connection, and can act as a handsfree kit. This enables you to make calls just by touching the screen. The device can also dock with an iPod, letting you control the iPod via the touchscreen and playing music either through the TomTom's own speakers, or via the car speakers.
There's really no reason not to like the TomTom GO 510. It does everything that you need, it does it well, and it's well priced. You could spend a bit more to get the GO 910 if you want extras like an MP3 player, compass and altimeter, but otherwise you'd be hard pushed to find a better satnav system.
Features of the TomTom GO 510 include:
- Easy to use: Extra wide 4 inch LCD touchscreen gives you smart design and easy to use navigation literally at your fingertips.
- Detailed maps of your region + the major roads of Europe on SD card: Door-to-door navigation in your region and cross border navigation to any town in Europe.
- Clear spoken instructions: Speaks some 36 languages in over 50 different voices.
- Hands-free calling: Doubles as a hands-free car kit using Bluetooth® technology. So you can make & receive calls as you drive with just a touch of the screen.
- Smart extras: iPod® control, home dock and much more besides.
