Panasonic TH-46PZ81B ReviewRating: Date: 17/6/09 If you're buying a plasma screen, you should be thinking big, and big really begins at 46 inches. Of course, you can get plasma screens up to 50 or even 60 inches, but 46 is a popular size and the Panasonic TH-46PZ81B is one of the best at this size. This TV has been out since last Autumn, but the price at launch was a hefty £1700. Now that it's available for about £1000, we think that it's become a bargain.
Panasonic have a great reputation in plasma, and the TH-46PZ81B is one of their best yet. This one's special because not only does it have a built-in Freeview tuner, but it was also the first to incorporate a built-in Freesat tuner as well. Freesat is great because it lets you receive free HD signals with no monthly charge. You just need to buy your satellite dish and pay for it to be installed. There are currently 140 digital channels available and an 8-day electronic programme guide to make selecting programmes simple. And of course it's free after installation, so buying this TV can actually save you money!
This is a TV that was built for HD of course, and it can display full HD up to 1080P format. With an incredible dynamic contrast of 1,000,000:1, plus 24p Real Cinema and Panasonic's proprietary V-Real 3 engine, this Viera plasma can outperform LCD screens costing significantly more. You will be hard pressed to find any motion blur or jagged edges, even when watching upscaled standard definition sources.
The audio output also packs a punch, with plenty of bass and overall power.
One thing that might have been improved is the number of HDMI ports. The Panasonic has three, whereas some cheaper TV's now come with four as standard. But when you consider that this TV has built-in Freeview and Freesat, you can understand that three is probably enough. There is also an SD card slot, which lets you display images from a digital camera, etc.
It seems that Panasonic are the only manufacturer making 46 inch plasmas. This is a shame, as it's a great size. 42 inches is too close to the mainstream LCD market, and not everyone has room for a 50 inch monster in their living room. Having said that you can now buy some 50 inch screens for the same kind of money as the TH-46PZ81B, but we still feel that this one has the edge, due to its exceptional picture quality and the fact that you get three tuners built in. If you want to spend a few hundred more, than consider the Panasonic TH-50PZ81B, but we feel that the 46 incher is the one that offers the best value for money.
