I have owned this panel now for over 3 years and it has been perfect. If you do get the buzzing noise get it fixed. Richersounds did this free under warranty (faulty PSU). Had no problems since. Also make sure you setup the TV correctly to get the best picture. Picture Settings - Post 200 Hours My current post 200 hour settings are as below. The colours are bright and vivid without being too unnatural. Try them out: Menu - Function - Luminance Manager - Off Menu - Function - ECO Mode - Off Picture Mode = Natural Contrast = +2 Brightness = +1 Color = -5 Sharpness = 0 Tint = 0 Color Temperature = Normal Contrast Mode = Normal YNR = Off CNR = Off Film Mode = Off 3D Comb Filter = Off LTI = Off CTI = Off Black Enhancement = Off Auto Color = Off Color Temperature->Amplitude: Red = 0 Color Temperature->Amplitude: Blue = 0 Color Temperature->Amplitude: Green = 0 Color Temperature->Cut Off: Red = 0 Color Temperature->Cut Off: Blue = 0 Color Temperature->Cut Off: Green = 0 Color Management->Magenta = 30 Color Management->Red = 30 Color Management->Yellow = 28 Color Management->Green = 27 Color Management->Cyan = 35 Color Management->Blue = 36 Color Decoder: Red = +32 Color Decoder: Green = +43 Color Decoder: Color = -10 Color Decoder: Tint = 0 Connection Details If you intend to use scart for DVD, again set to RGB. RGB signals are only accepted on AV2 and AV3. NOT AV1. Panel Life The A4 ALIS panel that the 42PD9700 utilises has a claimed half life of 80,000 hours. This means that you can use it 8 hours a day for 27 years before it drops to half its original brightness. Hitachi's ALIS panels, though, give more than improved phosphors for improved lifetime. ALIS, Alternate Lighting of Surfaces switches on and off each horizontal plane at 60Hz which improves lifetime by 33% and giving off better brightness Then TERES pixel driving method improves lifetime again by applying reduced voltages to each plasma particle and obtaining same level of brightness through improved phosphors. How does ALIS work? For starters, where conventional plasma panels have a strip of electrodes for each horizontal line of plasma cells, ALIS panels share an electrode strip between two lines of cells. These cells then switch on and off thousands of times per second so that at any given instant only half the panel's pixel lines are turned on. This means there’s less screen "real estate" taken up by electrode strips (seen as black grid lines on conventional plasma screens) and a greater phosphor area available to be illuminated, resulting in the 1080-line claims. Upscaling DVD Players - Should I Bother? This is an area of great interest to those of us with Hi-Def TV's. My take on this is as follows: I have the Denon 1920 and it is set to output 480p. If I output 720p or 1080i the image actually loses clarity and sharpness so the panel scales better. Sub £500 I would say do not bother buying an upscaling player as the TV does a better job. If you get into mid-high end kit then yes it would be worth buying one, but we are talking mid-high end Denon's and Arcam's. Otherwise you will not notice a difference, or actually make things worse!!! In terms of testing a good upscaling player, if your player scales better than the panel then you should see a better picture via HDMI if you use 1080i. If you use 720p then both the DVD and the panel will upscale which will probably degrade the image (relatively). At 480p then both component and HDMI will be very similar. Which HDMI Cable? The cable length really determines the best option available to you. If the cable run is two metres or less, then as HDMI is digital it is widely accepted that a molex cable is more than adequate. They can be picked up for around £15, just do a search on ebay or from: If you want a longer cable run then QED would be my recommendation. Wall Mounting Try the AV Sales universal bracket. Looks a bit flimsy in the photos but the build quality is exceptional and it's anything but flimsy in the flesh! Mounts the panel very close to the wall, easy to install, and comes with all the nuts, bolts and washers you'll need. Yellow Flickering On Plasmas Some people see yellow flickering, which has been reported on all plasma screens and is a product of the technology. The weird thing is that only certain people notice it. If you notice it on one screen you are likely to notice it on all of them, as it is suffered by the individual rather than being caused by the screens picture settings. It apparently gets better with time. A case in point: Yellow flashes anyone? Watching SD Football on a HD Plasma You may notice when watching an SD football match on any HD TV that the players appear to have a visible aura around them, or what I would call ghosting. This is a feature of watching SD football on a HD TV and this is not an issue with HD football broadcasts. Flashing Red Light In Standby Mode When the TV is in standby mode, the red light may flash on the TV for a minute or so. This is the DTT updating the channel list and is normal. 1080p is not supported With this TV you cannot feed it a 1080p source. Not really a major problem as the TV interlaces anyway to 1080i and native 1080i is draw droppingly detailed. On a 42 inch scren you cannot really see a major difference. High pitched hissing - the solution This is caused by a faulty T201 transformer on the PSU. The problem is fairly common and seems to effect about 50% of the sets sold. Mine was replaced and I would say that it took about two weeks of bedding in for it to go away, so have some patience. It is worse on bright scenes as the panel is working harder. If it gets replaced make sure the engineer re-calibrates the new PSU for the panels nominal sustain and souce voltages. The TV is HDCP compliant This is not mentioned in the manual but the protocol is supported. Some details on this: The guy is making some serious errors of judgement, but the replies clear it up...E-mail the Hitachi VP if you are worried as the thread states... Contrast Flicker Some people experience contrast flickering on the TV. The fix can be applied using the service menu:- With the panel on, and using the remote, press and hold the yellow and blue shortcut keys, and the S.MODE button. After a few seconds, the service menu will appear. On the remote, use the direction (cursor) keys to scroll until option 829 is highlighted. You may find it easier to scroll upwards, rather than downwards, as there are 900-odd options. With 829 highlighted, press the right cursor key on the remote to change the value from '0' to '1'. Press the OK button to store the change. Repeat for both 830 and 831, remembering to press OK to store the change each time. Once all three settings - 829, 830, 831 - have been changed, press the Menu button to leave the Service Menu. **DO NOT ALTER ANY OTHER SETTINGS IN THE SERVICE MENU**

I too have had the same humming "white noise" sound with my Hitachi. I am taking mine back to comet as their engineers cannot fix the problem as they cannot get the parts from Hitachi! Apparantley its to do with a faulty PSU (power supply unit)at the back of the set.Its a real shame, i think the tv looks stunning and has great picture and sound but the fact is Hitachi have sold a vast amount of faulty sets. If you decide to buy this tv you take the chance of picking up one of the faulty ones and there will be no way of getting it fixed due to Hitachi not being able to provide the parts. And beleive me, the humming sound REALLY is annoying so be aware if you think it wouldnt bother you.

What a great looking tv, at a good price, just short of a £1000, But ive got that buzzing noise, at first i thought it was me, have been offered a replacement, but not going to chance it, may try an LG, for the same money, but its so hard to check b4 you buying, with the shop noise, to see if there all the same, good luck, to all, we need it.

What a pity Pete the Red had problems, my set is very very good and I wonder if the signal was anything to do with the noise. HD does make a difference to the picture andI have found that if I use the Dynamic Mode it is even better.I hope that your problems are resolved. P.S. I bought mine off the net from Lasky's.com absolutely first class service.

Having read all the mag's and scoured the net for info, i took my hard earned to Sound & Vision in Farnworth, Bolton and came away with the Hitachi 42" plasma. Good looking set and dead easy to set up. i wasn't overly impressed with the picture quality, but i've never sat in front of a plasma before so this might be as good as it gets, the distance picture on Match of the Day made the players look like little fuzzy blobs of colour, not what i was expecting, the close ups made skin look waxy. I just hoped that HD viewing might make a difference, but i haven't had the chance to find out. The set developed a low hum/buzz, very annoying. I rang S&V who gave me a couple of things to try using the set up menu, it still hummed. Repacked and returned in exchange for another set,.....this one hums/buzzes too, and it's going back! I would like to say that S&V have been very good and are allowing me to exchange for another manufacturer, which is a shame because i thinks the Hitachi's a nice looking package, but the hum distracts you from enjoying the program, it's a bit like the wife talking during Match of the Day!!
