iRiver iHP-120 20GB

Product Rating

iRiver iHP-120 20GB Features wise, the player rates very highly. Boasting MP3, WMA, WAV, ASF and OGG playback, real time direct encoding, optical input and output, USB 2.0, FM tuner, firmware upgradeable, large backlit LCD, 16 hours playback using the rechargeable battery and of course, the amazing looks of this stylish player.

The great thing abou the iHP-120 is its ability to transfer files using Windows Explorer, something that most people will appreciate. Sound quality on this little gem is excellent! We transferred a few Tom Jones tracks and cranked up the volume.... the results were excellent. Next to no distortion, plenty of deep bass and plenty loud enough for most people. One more thing to amaze you is the physical size of the iHP-120, this player is barely bigger than the NEX IIe! coming in with dimensions of 60mmW x 105mmH x 19mmD (Draw this out on a piece of paper for an accurate size).

As you can probably tell we really rate this as a player and we would have no hesitiations in recommending this as an alternative to the ZEN or iPod.

Ive been looking for a mp3 player for use outdoors. After trying a Zen MP3 player & finding it almost useless outside in bright sunlight .. akin to a mobile phone color display .. i found the iriver B/W screen to be just the job. The display is plenty clear enough outdoors & in lo light it has a backlight that u can set the ON time via the menu. So far ive loaded ALL my most played music ( about 5Gb) & lots of other radio recordings from tapes to MP3. Most of my recordings are at 192kbs As it just lifts the top end slightly .. & only a small amount of increased file size. The player is fairly big for a pocket when u have the leather case fitted .. a lot bigger than my 3G phone .. but i can live with that as it stores all my music .. amazing!!! The player was easy to learn .. although im not sure about the joystick lever on the front. I tried making a mic recording while in the garden using the built in mic .. & was really pleased with the result. In the settings u can adjust either AGC on or off. This controls the gain of the mic & makes a big difference. One minor thing was on one recording (out of 3) the internal HD started up & was heard plainly by the mic.!! but still ideal for a quick recording. Ive not used the in/outs yet but just drag n drop mp3. At 1st using WIN98SE i couldnt make the PC see the player .. with XP it found it straight away!! After a lot of messing around i got some help from another forum & found out that the disk suppied installed the drivers in its own folder in Program files\iriver. All i had to do is re-install them & now its working fine. Not much elese to comment on .. i chose the IRIVER H120 out of a few others .. after realising the display issue .. the other one i may have gone for was the MPIO HD120. The IRIVER also has a radio & again its very easy to use .. has a nice big display & sounds really good for a pocket radio. We live in the London uk area & fairly high up & can rx stations from France & Holland when the conditions are right .. & i did tune into a Dutch station on 104.4mhz whilst in the garden .. although it was pretty noisy reception. Im not really sure? about the sound Q ?.. & i do use larger headphones Philps HP820.. but it just seems to lack a bit of sparkle .. maybee its me ..but i can say its miles n miles ahead of the old Cassette walkman players. Its very nicely made .. has a nice soft padded case .. only charged it twice so far .. lots of menu options .. the Firmware is upgradeable .. its drag n drop!! this is great!! the menus have some shortcuts to the buttons on the front .. It holds plenty of music. Plenty of volume to spare if your headphones are a bit on the quiet side. A great alternative to a portable cd player. recomended.
